The Woods Women & Other Works

Saya Woolfalk at Leslie Tonkonow Artwork + Projects in New York, New York, USA through 23 November 2022. Saya Woolfalk creates works of art that combine elements of her African American, Japanese, and European heritage, with allusions to anthropology, feminist theory, science fiction, and Eastern religions. In this exhibition, Woolfalk introduces “The Woods Women”, a secret society that predates her Empathic Universe. The exhibition includes the artist’s newest works on paper, inspired by her study of the renowned Hudson River School and herbarium collections at The Newark Museum of Art where she was the Artist-in-Residence in 2019. Some days are more creative than others. I notice that the amount of ideas and how easily they flow fluctuates even when you are being intentional with your practice of sketching and experimentation. For example, I noticed that last week I had an overwhelming amount of ideas coming in and I felt like it was a high creative moment. This week is not nearly as free flowing as last week. I’ve been thinking about how important it is during these high creative moments to capture your ideas. I have been referencing my sketches from last week and expanding on them and that in turn helps me create better ideas even when I am not having a great week. Ideas feel like dreams sometimes, if you don’t write them down in that moment, it’s easy to forget or get lost down another tangent.

Studie am Städtebauinstitut Prof. Dr. Helmut Bott

Für ein kleines Baugebiet unterhalb eines historischen Gutshofes in Aachen wurde eine verdichtete Wohnbebauung entwickelt, deren Zentrum von eine „Schiene“ mit Künstlerateliers gebildet wird.

Die zwölf Ateliers wurden in zwei parallele Schienen zusammengefasst.

Der Raum zwischen den Schienen ist als halbprivate Hoffläche konzipiert und kann temporär auch als öffentlicher Kunstpfad zwischen dem ebenfalls für Kunstzwecke genutzten Gutshof und der am anderen Ende befindlichen Ausstellungshalle im Untergeschoss der Atelierschiene genutzt werden.

Ziel des Entwurfes war die Entwicklung von hochverdichteten, atmosphärisch anregenden Räumen: Gebäude, deren Dichte als räumliche Qualität erfahrbar wird.

Painting Photographs

I started with photographs taken in Alaska, using a medium format film camera, printed them on canvas, and painted over them with acrylic, using molding paste for texture.

I first experimented with painting my photos in 2001, after taking a darkroom course at Mowelfund in the Philippines. This led to a show at The Drawing Room in Makati, Philippines. At the time I could only print up to 8" x 10" black and white photos. Since then, digital photography has advanced so it's now possible to print large scale on canvas.

The image above is of a mountain range taken from Richardson Highway near Fairbanks, Alaska. It's on a 20"x 20" stretched canvas, copyright 2023. It was created during my Artist Residency at The Art Center in Dover, New Hampshire.

What does a Residency show means??

It’s basically when artists stay in one location for a period of time instead of touring around the country. Like in Las Vegas. If you want to see Celine Dion, you go to her. Harry is doing a series of shows in Canada, NY, Chicago, Texas, LA.

It allows him to set up and not have to break down his set or travel as much. Probably saves money. Certainly saves time and effort.
