DAY 3 | The Recoupling (1/8)
Nina: Welcome back, viewers! The time has come for our islanders to finally participate in the first recoupling of the season! Or, that is what I would say, if this meddling pest of a man would STOP TRYING TO RUIN MY SHOW! *ahem* Pardon me. Let’s finally put this to rest, shall we? Coming up...*rolls eyes* it’s Keith.

Beginning | Previous | Next
Frankie: Hey, Yana? No hard feelings, right?
Yana: None at all. I think you two make a great match!
Camryn: You seem tense.
Tucker: Yeah…just nervous to see what happens.
Manny: Well, I’m cool as a cucumber.
Manny: I’m sure everyone will end up with exactly who they’re meant to…
Hikaru: [flustered]
Nina: My, my, you all sure know how to dress to impress.
Nina: Welcome to your first recoupling of the season!
[cheers and applause]
Nina: Tonight, you’ll all gather around the firepit and make the first big decision of the game: who would you like to move forward with in the Villa…and who will be packing their bags and saying goodbye tonight?
Nina: Tonight’s decision will be in the hands of new islander Frankie, and our five dashing gentlemen. They’ll choose who out of you vulnerable ladies they’ll…
Nina: Okay, who’s the smart ass who’s mocking me?
Keith: Sorry ‘bout that! Kinda a reflex, assuming the position of host.
[shocked gasps]

Smiffina Episodes - Episode 442
Beth Adamson, one of the alleged victims of the serial rapist suspect, Keith Durante, has made a 999 call to say Durante is following her again. Beth is nowhere to be seen until Emma shouts from around a corner to alert Smithy she's found him. Smithy crouches down in front of her and gently comforts her, reassuring her she's safe. Emma remains at the scene trying to find witnesses to either Beth screaming or Durante following her.
Adam arrives, telling Gina his sabbatical isn't able to start until he's solved the problem that is on the front page of the paper...
Tumblr media
He's also horrified to hear that Heaton has told Gina to move on if not happy and that she's seriously considering it! Gina tells him everything that has been happening since he arrived and that Heaton ignores everyone else's opinion and decides what's happening only by himself - despite not knowing the area or his officers. Adam reassures her he'll talk to him. In return she agrees to attend the mayors 'do' that evening for a goodbye drink just for him. The DAC asks Gina to make sure that John attends the mayors do that evening too.
Adam listens, alongside the Deputy Assistant Comissioner, as Gina approaches Heaton with a problem that has been raging all week without any input from Heaton other than to direct the public to the press office. Unfortunately that approach is worse than useless and with 2 of his superiors in the room, Heaton finally has to fold and tells her to get the available officers into the briefing room and let him know when she's ready. As she leaves, Gina and Adam exchange knowing looks.
The DAC and Adam confront John about the paper report, where the neighbours whos house was barged into without permission or any history of being attached to the 'crack den' next door are saying that if the gran who died was treated like they were then it's no wonder she has died. He claims the headlines are nonsense and Adam points out he needs the papers onside so Heaton invites both down to the problem estate with him to hear the public opinion for themselves.
Before they leave, Gina takes Tony into her office and lets him into the plan of the Superintendent to potentially replace the older officers with 2 new ones and warns him to remain squeaky clean.

Kezia goes to speak to Jack about the Keith Durante case and updates him on the mornings happenings with Beth. Kezia says she'll speak to Beth's phone company to ask about the calls and then will pay a visit to the Durante house. Mrs Durante tells Kezia that Keith was at an interview with a cab office during the time he was alleged to have harassed Beth. His wife doesn't look overly surprised but before she can open up Keith returns home and stops them. His wife looks incredibly uncomfortable too as he kisses her cheek in greeting and he hands Kezia a business card for the cab company, telling her he got the job so his alibi will cover him. Beth is horrified to hear he has a job with another cab company after he used his car with his old cab company to pick her up and then went on to rape her. With no evidence they can't prosecute him. Worse off it appears to be pure chance they were on the same street because of his job interview.
Another 999 call comes in regarding Beth, it appears she's received a bunch of flowers with a card saying 'I'm sorry, we need to talk'. She attacked the driver, threw the flowers everywhere and stormed off according to witnesses. Kezia stops her from approaching the cab company Keith works and comforts her. The calls that were harassing Beth came from call boxes and the flowers were purchased by a teenage boy that could have been put up to it by Durante. Kezia believes Beth's constant rejection of him is what is fueling him because she thinks he's ready to admit what he did to obtain forgiveness from Beth. She wants to set up a meeting with Beth and Durante and be just a minute away. They set up Matt to tell her what she can't ask him and prepare her for what they need for it to be used as evidence.
Adam tells John that he should keep Gina onside as she's a valuable asset. "Sun Hill works much better with Gina than without her." He tells him to set up local initiatives and to tackle the cause rather than just the symptoms. Heaton insists they won't work without showing the boundaries first and what will and won't be accepted. "That's all very well for public morale, but what about the morale of those at the station?" Adam asks. They get called to Tony and Leela who have had their tires slashed and one of their reg plates stolen whilst assisting a young girl. Heaton growls at them and bollocks them for it and tells Tony he's attracting lots of attention today and to stop it. Adam whispers to him to watch himself just incase Heaton tries anything big.
As a fun aside: Tony and Leela have a car chase round the back of the studios 😂
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beth has left a message on Durante's voicemail for him to come round and the surveillance dept are planting hidden cameras and microphones around her place as Smithy and Kezia watch. Smithy is going to be in the bedroom as Beth's security and he'll be able to hear it all and also receive instructions from Jack through an earpiece. They tell her to appear at the window if she wants him out and they'll send someone to 'break it up' casually without the cover being blown so they can repeat it if necessary. Keith calls and arranges to come over and Sun Hill move - Smithy in the bedroom and Jack, Kezia and other extras in the flat next door - just a few seconds away.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Keith tells Beth he has been dying to talk to her and claims he feels like a teenager preparing for his first date. He claims he's fallen head over heels for her and that Beth is special and that she deserves to be wooed and he should be gentle with her. He claims he had a wandering eye until he met her and everything has now changed and his wife means nothing. He's close to admitting that he forced her... and then his wife rings and interrupts them and changes. He leaves to return home and the officers move in to support Beth. She claims she can't keep doing it until they get the breakthrough and walks away from them.
Gina and Heaton have a discussion about where they go from there. He says if she decides she can work with him all his fine, if not.... She tells him she likes the station, the team... but she is struggling to find something to like about John. She then tells him that she was impressed by the compassion he showed Beth Adamson before she went to 'meet' Durante and realised he might not be quite 100% bad after all. He admits that his zero tolerance approach might not work in every case and she smiles a little and points out he just admitted he was wrong - they start a literal 'oh yes it was' 'oh no it wasn't!' row - before both stop, pause, and burst out laughing at the ridiculous exchange.
As they return to the station, Kezia attends a debrief with the DCI and, deflated, heads downstairs. Smithy sees her and asks her to go for a drink that night to cheer her up after a disappointing day. They get interupted by Yvonne who has received a report from the plain clothed officer outside Beth's. A man was knocking and didn't get an answer but a window was open around the back - Kezia fears that Durante has Beth and runs back upstairs to alert Jack. Keith is nowhere to be found and Kezia visits his wife and tells her that Beth has disappeared. Louisa tells Kezia that he told her Beth was obsessed with him and that he loves her and she was a mistake. Louisa is clearly confused but she admits to Kezia if she believes what she's saying about him then that makes her husband a rapist. Kezia assures her she'd make sure that she was safe... she's said that to Beth many times too (!) She tells Louisa all she needs is a statement saying she wasn't with her husband at the time of the attacks. Before she can agree, Keith tumbles in and passes out cold. Kezia has to call an ambulance.
Gina and John have made up somewhat after their talk and both agreeing to be more flexible with each other and they attend the drinks do together. Adam is pleased to see them getting on. The DAC approaches them and tells Gina there are people John needs to meet so asks her to excuse them. She leads him further into the room and then adjusts his tie like a wife might... we've found 'the other woman'... It's obvious that Adam has realised too.

The leading surgeon and amateur photographer Thomas Keith was born on May 27th 1827 at St Cyrus Aberdeenshire.
The 7th son of a minister, one of the 450 that formed the Free Church during the disruption, his father rook an interest in early photography, which he passed on to his son.
Thomas was educate at Aberdeen Grammar School, The Royal High School Edinburgh and Marischal College Collage Aberdeen, where he graduated MA in 1848 he went on to complete his medical training in Edinburgh, graduating as a doctor and going on to be an assistant to the more famous James Young Simpson, before becoming a top surgeon in his own right.
Specialising of ovariotomy, (ovarian cystectomy) his published results were amongst the best in the world, Keith saved the lives of a higher proportion of his female patients than any of his contemporaries, wielding his surgeon’s knife with such speed and precision that, simply, fewer of them went into shock.
Keith teamed up with his friend John Forbes White, probably in the summer of 1853, to take waxed-paper views, which they entered into that year’s exhibition of the Aberdeen Mechanics’ Institution. The only other time Keith participated in a major public exhibition was at the 1859 meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, held in his native Aberdeen.
During this time Keith mastered the waxed-paper negative like no one else, producing views of architecture in Scotland and urban studies of Edinburgh that had no equal, then or since. Light itself was his most formidable tool, and in 1856 he confessed to Photographic Notes: “I never expose my paper, unless the light is first-rate. This I have made a rule, and nothing ever induces me to deviate from it.” Keith was elected to the council of the Photographic Society of Scotland in 1856 and 1858, but was rarely able to attend meetings, for the demands of his medical practice crowded out his beloved hobby of photography.
At the time of his death in 1895, the Scotsman described Keith as “decidedly picturesque” in personal appearance, adding, “no one could see him without recognising that he was in the presence of a man of unique power.” For Alvin Langdon Coburn, writing in the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine in 1915, Keith’s “Old Edinburgh” series stood out “as his most remarkable achievement with the camera,” and he included fifteen of Keith’s photographs in a pivotal exhibition at the Albright Art Gallery in Buffalo that year.
At a time when Scotland had some of the best photographers in the world in Adamson, Hill and the Anna Family, as well as Alexander Gardner plying his trade in the states, with his famous pictures of the Lincoln, and the civil war, Keith seems to often be overlooked, this is largely due to him giving his hobby up around 1856.

World Masters Cross Country Championships preview part 3
With statistical assistance from Scott Lawrence
There are now just five days until runners and fans converge upon Bathurst for the World Cross Country Championships. My previews have focussed on the Masters 6k races because the 2k relay teams largely remain a mystery to me. But a few enquiries have revealed some interesting pairings. In the 40+ division, it has been confirmed that Ben Bruce and April Lund (USA) will run as a team and they should clean up. Steve Dinneen and Anna Kasapis are the strongest Aussie pairing, followed by Nathan Crowley and Nicole Joseph. These four runners are all from Victoria and I'm not aware of any teams from other States that might challenge them.
(L to R) Dinneen, Kasapis, Crowley, Joseph
Tumblr media
In the 50+ category, Steve Moneghetti has thrown the cat among the pigeons by dropping down from his 60+ age group to team up with Krishna Stanton. A clever move from the master of Masters! But I fancy the chances of Victorian duo, John Meagher and Julie Norney, who have an age advantage over this all-star pair. In a remarkable coincidence, Krishna and Julie ran identical times in their most recent parkruns (18:56), so will Mona have the speed over 2k to beat his younger rival? I am going out on a limb and tipping an upset by the younger team. Ant Rickards and Bev Thomas (also Vic) are the likely third team on the podium. Krishna's presence should at least prevent a Victorian sweep of the medals.
(L to R top) Moneghetti, Stanton, Meagher
(L to R bottom) Norney, Rickards, Thomas
Tumblr media
Now we return to the 6k individual cross country and the top 60+ and 65+ prospects. There are only three overseas M60 entries and it's a shame that most of the best runners in this age group appear to have preferred to enter the World Indoor Track Championships in Poland next month. Nonetheless, the field remains of high quality. Mona, fresh from his 5000m world track record, is the hottest of red-hot favourites. In an ominous sign for his rivals, when asked recently about the upcoming race, Mona simply volunteered: "I like cross country", four words carrying a very clear message to his rivals, among whom will be Bruce Graham (ACT), the winner of numerous Masters track titles over many years, and Derek Froude, a two time Olympian for New Zealand but now representing the USA. Craig Downie (Tas) is another elite runner, with recent times of 10:08/17:47 for 3000m/parkrun to his name. Gary Mayor (Qld) ran 17:35 for 5000m last year and so is also a chance for a medal.
(L to R) Graham, Froude, Downie, Mayor
Tumblr media
The W60 field is not nearly as strong and has no foreign runners, so is a de facto Australian Championships. Victoria Gunn (Tas), or Vicky to her friends, ran 21:06 and scored an age grading over 90% at the Launceston parkrun last year, which probably makes her (what else?) a gun runner. Robyn Basman (NSW) has a similar 5000m time from 2022. Anne Lord (Vic) is a four-time Australian World Cross Country representative. The other runners have little or no form on the board, so there could easily be a surprise win here from someone sneaking under my radar.
(L to R) Gunn, Basman
Tumblr media
How good it would have been to see the two outstanding M65 runners in the world going head to head in Bathurst? But alas, it's not to be, as NSW's own Keith Bateman and Scotland's Alistair Walker are both skipping the event, unfortunately. This leaves Allan Long (formerly NT, now Vic) as the clear favourite. Ian Calder (NZ) and Peter Hutton (NSW) are experienced Masters competitors and should both be in the mix. In the W65 age group, Rosemary Roediger (NSW) has a strong claim with recent parkrun times just beyond 21 minutes and consistent 90%+ age gradings, but New Zealander Christine Adamson will be close by. Great Britain and Northern Ireland's Margaret Phillips boasts an impressive 441 parkruns to date, but she cannot match the speed of Rosemary or Christine. Helen Stanley (Vic) is another respected Masters competitor. Calder and Adamson will be a chance to win the 60+ 2k relay if they team up, although the younger pair of Downie and Gunn could conceivably take the gold medals back with them to Tasmania.
(L to R) Calder, Hutton, Adamson, Stanley
Tumblr media
I hope that you are enjoying these event previews. The final episode in these series will look at the 70+, 75+ and 80+ divisions, where the race distance drops to 4k. Until then, keep on running!

8, 9, and 35 for music asks
Thanks!!
8) If we keep to bands that are still active and just quiet right now (rather than living but disbanded), it's a tough choice but as Laibach's live recordings are already immensely powerful I really hope they come back to the UK sometime.
9) Gotta be Joe Strummer, the world misses him now more than ever. He even wanted to get the Clash back together just before he died, what could've fucking been. Obviously there's plenty more that deserve mention (Ian Curtis, Stuart Adamson, Lou Reed, I could go on) but yeah.
35) I would love to hear what fiery blues explosion you'd get if you put Wilko Johnson and Keith Richards together.

LOVE ISLAND EXTRAS | Locked Up (They Won’t Let Me Out) (1/3)
The night may have already come to it’s dramatic conclusion in the Villa, but at the Love Island Sulani Head Quarters, the drama has already rolled over into the next morning. Keith finds himself detained by the Love Island security team while Nina determines what to do with him. For his sake, I hope he really does have a good lawyer...
@madebycoffee

Security 1: …Nah, man you’re crazy.
Security 2: I’m just saying, I don’t blame him for cutting her loose.
Security 1: So let me get this right: you meet a girl - fine as hell - make her own money, got her own crib, vibes with you, and is clearly tryna take that shit to the next level…you’re fumbling the bag over a crush? [sucks teeth] You young cats is different, bruh.
Security 2: Look, I hear you, but at the end of the day, it’s not that straightforward sometimes. Like, shorty was obviously feeling him, but that doesn’t mean he’s got to feel the same.
Security 1: Maaan, I’unno. He couldn’t save the homie though?
Security 2: Aye, I’m with you on that one. That was a bold move.
[loud knocks]
[even louder knocks]
Keith: [*muffled* I know you can hear me, assholes!]
Security 1: Here this boy go again…
Security 2: [chuckles]
Keith: You think that’s funny?! Wait until I get out of here, and we’ll see who’s laughing!
Security 2: [*muffled* You mean if you get out of there?]
Keith: This is unlawful detainment, you pricks! My lawyer is gonna have a field day with you two!
Security 1: [*muffled* There ain’t a lawyer in the world who can help you where you’re going.]
[both laughing]
[THUD]
Keith: DAMN IT!
Keith:...Man.
Keith: I really stepped in it this time, didn’t I?
Keith: “It’ll be fun,” I said. “Just a simple breaking-and-entering,” I said. What the hell was I thinking?
Keith: Maybe they’ll let me call Gian. He’s gotta know someone who can bust me outta here…

My favourite photo by Keith is the second one in the post, the location is White Horse Close. I think you can also it is a different type of photo than his counterparts in Edinburgh, Hill & Adamson, the use of light is extraordinary.
The next pic is nearby Reid's Close, Canongate, off the Royal Mile, the next two are the Grassmarket in Edinburgh, the castle dominating the second of these.
