I tried vitamoltz or whatever it's called before. It's good when cold and it does kinda have a beer taste. It's like a malt drink. It reminds me of Kbac soda. I think it's from Russia. But it kinda has that same malt taste or like brown bread. Probably not a good description lol. We tried the vitamoltz last year at St. Patrick's Day. My parents threw a party and they had green beer. For the non-alcohol drinkers, they got the alcohol-free beer and died it green :) It's strangely refreshing.

I Can See Russia From Utah

Contrary to popular perceptions of Russians as angry and bitter people,  I’m here to tell you that Russians laugh, smile, and enjoy life as much as anyone. Keep scrolling and check out some of my personal experiences with new Russian friends, and Eastern European food right under your nose in Utah.

Olga is always up for a selfie. It doesn’t matter where.

I met Victor and Olga last year. We became friends instantly. They are always willing to teach me a little about the Russian language and culture. They’re always happy and goofy, which is why I fit right in.

To the left of Olga is her brother-in-law Nikolai and her sister Emilia, who I also have become great friends with.

They invited me over for Thanksgiving last year, and I didn’t know what to expect. I was blasted with Russian-style stuffed peppers, caviar snacks, and pastries. Some of the ingredients used can’t be found in the United States and were hand delivered by visiting family members. Everything was new to me and delicious. Surprisingly even the caviar!

Having Eastern European friends and being enrolled in Russian language classes, I eventually caught wind of this little gem. Spending five minutes in this store, I met friendly people from Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine. Ninety percent of the items sold can’t be found in any American store.

I wouldn’t mind experimenting with recipes using some of these.

Their meats, are some of their most popular products. Most items are shipped from Eastern Europe to American distributors in New York and California. Although we have similar meats, some swear these have distinct differences in production and taste.

I actually bought one of the children’s games to help me learn more Russian language basics.

If you are one of the many Utahns who have learned Russian from living overseas and would like your children to develop an interest in learning your second language, this store is an excellent place for real Russian exposure.

Someone looks sleepy

Meet Andrew! He’s proof that language exposure in the market alone can yield very beneficial fluency results. At only eleven years old, he started visiting the store frequently. He would just hang out, listen and repeat. When he became old enough to work, he was hired as an employee. Now he can hold a conversation with any Russian speaker. All the employees here are kind and seem to appreciate when curious locals come in to shop around.

My mom doesn’t like beer! Oh, wait…

Lastly, my favorite new drink is called KBAC, (pronounced Kvas). It is a non-alcoholic, refreshing beverage, made from black bread. The best part is, you don’t have to go all the way to Russia to try it. The next time you get that itch to try something new and spontaneous, you know where to look. You might even make some new friends in the process!

This language I made up is a sort of form of pig latin with Way Too Many™ rules to it. I’ll list the basic rules first.

Take the last letter and bring it to the front of the word. If the first two letters are consonants, put an ‘i’ between them. Otherwise, leave it alone. Y is considered a consonant, not a vowel.

This forces the language to be very syllable-heavy. It takes a lot just to speak one sentence in it. Maleficarti speak this very fast as a result. The words kinda meld together sometimes. Here are more rules.

There are no double letters. This is taken into account after switching the last letter.

The letters h and c don’t exist. H is not replaced, but c is replaced by k.

The word I stays the same, but it’s said like the letter E. Words that are similar are separated by context (his and is would both be si). Contractions are separated. Contractions don’t exist.

Compound words also don’t exist. Fuck compound words. This also includes words that aren’t really considered compound words, but are made up of two words.
