Favorite thing about Tara and Emily? Individually and as a ship?

For Tara:

favorite thing about her: LITERALLY EVERYTHING SHE IS PERFECT but also if I had to pick just one it's probably her emotional intelligence.

least favorite thing about her: the fact that she joined the team when the show was already starting to go downhill in terms of writing quality and storylines, so we didn't get to see her during some of the best CM episodes and arcs.

favorite line: "Brian, hi, I'm SSA Lewis. I guess you could say I'm the woman behind the woman, if you know what I mean."

brOTP: LUKE AND TARA!!!!!

OTP: TEMILY TEMILY TEMILY obvs

nOTP: There aren't really a lot of popular Tara ships, so I don't think I really have one, but the fact that her character was originally conceived as a love interest for Spencer makes me gag a little bit.

random headcanon: Her birthday is April 22.

unpopular opinion: Her wig in seasons 12-13 was actually really cute. It wasn't as good as her hair in 14-15 or in Evolution, but it was a good look for her, and it framed her face really nicely.

unpopular opinion: Most of the fandom simply doesn't deserve her. Outside of our little circle of Emily stans, fanon interpretations of Emily are almost always OOC and usually rooted in misogyny.

Tara gives Emily safety and stability to feel like she never has to run or put up walls, and the way Emily thrives and flourishes with Tara helps her take herself a little less seriously, heal from the trauma of her marriage, and realize that Daryl's self-destructive tendencies and inability to get sober with her were not in any way her fault.

least favorite thing about them: The fact that they are technically not canon

Okay, so Tara and Daryl:

They met in the stacks of the library during Tara's senior year of college. They were both looking for the same psychology book.

He was immediately charming and sweet, and he let Tara check the book out instead of him, but only on the condition she give him her number so he could come borrow it if he really needed it.

Of course, he found some reason to need the book before Tara was finished with it just so he could call her, and of course, when he did, they ended up talking for hours and forgetting about the book altogether.

Tara had come out as bisexual the year before, and in that time, she'd found that every guy she'd try to date got super weird and biphobic, and the fact that Daryl was actually really chill and supportive was like a breath of fresh air.

Daryl was the best boyfriend Tara had ever had. They were intellectually matched and supported each other's academic and career ambitions, but they also knew how to have fun. They looked out for each other and took care of each other. Daryl even called Tara's grandmother to get her chicken soup recipe one winter when Tara had the flu.

Losing her mother at eighteen had forced Tara to grow up a little too fast and spend what were supposed to be her carefree college years having to take on the emotional labor and family responsibilities that her mother had handled before she got sick. She had to spend a lot of her time and energy keeping the family together and making sure her father and brother didn't fall off the edge in some self-destructive spiral. Being with Daryl was the first time since her mother died that she felt like she could just relax a little and be in her twenties and enjoy life and let someone else handle some of the worrying. With Daryl, she didn't always have to be the stable, organized, responsible one, because Daryl was actually pretty mature and on top of things, too.

Daryl proposed to Tara in the stacks of the library where they first met. They got married at an old historic mansion in New Hampshire and went to the Costa Brava in Spain on their honeymoon.

Being a married couple in graduate school wasn't easy. They were always stressed and sleep deprived, and they had trouble making ends meet sometimes. The bickering started even before Daryl's addiction did, but they always told themselves that this was temporary, that they were working hard now to live the life they wanted later.

"This is all temporary" is still what Tara told herself when Daryl started taking uppers, and his personality started to change as his drug problem grew worse. Tara didn't realize it was drugs at first, but the first time she saw the pills, Daryl told her that he just needed a little extra help staying awake during night shifts, and he had it all under control.

Tara was skeptical, especially after watching her father and brother struggle with their own issues, but she believed him. She believed him because she had to, because not believing him meant accepting that the only man in her life she could depend on to give her stability and support instead of the other way around was now headed down the path of self-destruction, too.

Tara pushed herself further and further into denial, making excuses for Daryl when he lied to her or screamed at her or stole from her--until that one night when he got rough with her and shoved her up against the full-length mirror.

After five years, Tara finally reached her breaking point, and she and Daryl got divorced.

After her divorce, she felt the need to get out of New Hampshire and get a fresh start. The FBI had been trying to recruit her as a forensic psychologist for years, and she decided that was just the fresh start she needed, so she enrolled in the Academy.

She didn't tell anyone that she was seeing a therapist and going to Al-Anon meetings, but she did for years. It was the only way she could recover from the pain and trauma she'd been through during her marriage.

Still, watching Daryl go from the man she could depend on to just another broken man in her life who needed her to be the stable one left her with some serious emotional scars. If she was a perfectionist before, it was worse now. In the end, being married to Daryl just made her feel even more like she always had to have her shit together and be the stable, organized, responsible one.

It took falling in love with Emily, someone who is a little chaotic and a little reckless, but still the most stable, supportive, loving partner Tara has ever had (not to mention just a really strong, successful, badass woman), for Tara to truly internalize that she doesn't always have to have all of her shit together all the time in order to be worthy of love and happiness in life.

When she ran into Daryl again in L.A. and saw that he had his life together, it really hit her hard. She always thought that if she ever saw Daryl again, the hardest part would be all the painful memories it brought back. But seeing Daryl looking like his old self again and being able to see in him the man she fell in love with brought back a lot of the happy memories, too, and those were even more painful for her.

Emily supported her and helped her through it. She let Tara take breaks and cry on her shoulder and somehow managed to say all of the things that Tara needed to hear. Tara had never felt more loved and supported and cared for than she did when Emily was helping her deal with seeing Daryl again, and it was then that she knew she would spend the rest of her life with Emily, loving her more and more with each day they spent together.
