DIGGERS (2006) Grade: C
Felt like a water down version of a few films before it, Diner, being 1. Some funny moments. Tension wasn't never high never 2 feel attached ever. What a cast though, most of these actors were not big names in 2006 yet.

"It was 'Something Wild' that most brilliantly telescoped Demme's gleeful fusion of song and subject matter, and provided, for me and I suspect many others, a guide to how one could deploy one's personal playlist in the service of broader narrative interests."
Katherine Dieckmann
I love seeing Jeff Daniels really feeling the music. Makes me happy. That and Melanie Griffith's little laugh.

Women in Film Challenge 2020: [67/52] Diggers, dir. Katherine Dieckmann (USA, 2006)
You make choices and you live with that.
Okay, all right. I got it. Just like you chose not to be there when your sister needed you most because you had to go take a picture of a pole. Like you chose to sleep in and not be in the bay the day your father died. Or like you choose to be here with all of us in this place and yet you're not really here at all. You know what I mean?

Diggers    [trailer]
A story about a tight-knit group of friends, who try to maintain their small-town way of life in the face of enormous changes in 1970s Long Island.
Not an exceptional film, but a very nice little one. Funny, charming, a little weird, but still serious. A pleasant watch. Albeit a male-centric one.
It also serves as a reminder that Paul Rudd does not age.

I think I secretly wanted this to be 70% comedy. :)

(Hopefully by this point you’ve finished all 92 minutes of 'Strange Weather’, the kind of person who isn’t bothered by spoilers, or are just deciding if you still want to keep watching.)

Even if this film didn’t have the opening scene that ‘Mission: Impossible III’ had, it managed to get my attention when it opened with besties Darcy and Byrd. Well...it opened with Darcy first about to do some ‘gray area’ gardening then was followed by a cheeky conversation about ‘unethical roses’.
And that was enough for me to go: ‘Ohhhh...this is going to be good!’
Unfortunately...that thought got lost somewhere as the film didn’t have a memorable name (maybe in time...It’ll feel ‘right’?), and even if I probably had it in my list...the name or the featured image really didn’t call out to me.
I only found it again when I was going through my Netflix list and realised it was the film I had been looking for awhile now.
And...back to that (sort of) hacking scene: when I rewatched it...I noticed that there was actually a hint when Byrd took a moment to guess what password Walker would have used
PS: Yes...you’ll be hearing this a lot from me...and maybe if enough vocalise a desire for a chance....the bigwigs up in Netflix HQ might see the benefits of implementing an updated algorithm. It takes about a month to go rate all titles, because if it isn’t done...it’s likely that the stuff that I am meant to discover...would end up...undiscovered.
(I would have said that it takes a month if you don’t have any of your Netflix data..meaning you forgot to renew your subscription before it was deleted ---- or a new user. Now? I think it’ll take maybe two or three. I still have my data and I still haven’t finished rating all titles. It is sad that the reality is that I would probably spend 90% of my time rating titles rather than watching them.)
Possible solution? 5 minute total watching time for each title. Because that’s all I need to find out if it’s something I would like to keep watching. And to prevent abuse...there’s a 2 hour waiting time to watch another five minutes (if returning to the same title). If that happens...I can just rate when my subscription is inactive...and once I’ve resubscribed....the recommendations, new titles, and my list....are closer to what I would want to watch
PPS: How’s that I thought that Clayton’s name was Clyde!? :/ It took me noticing the IMDB credits....and...the closing credits to confirm.
Note to parents: You may want to watch this one first on your own before fully deciding which parts are you going to be okay with letting your kids see.
--------
HIGHLIGHT:
INT. BAR - NIGHT
DARCEY is in her own world, cigarette in hand. Mourning what could have been. CLAYTON spots her and approaches.
CLAYTON Hey.
DARCY gives him a glance. No need to really look. She knows who the voice belongs to. She takes another swig of her drink.
CLAYTON Last time I saw that look on your face, it was the night that you broke that menu board over some guy's head when he grabbed your ass when you set down his meatloaf.
She's too far gone to laugh...or even recognise that it was a joke.
CLAYTON I was in the stock room minding my own business, and I heard 'cr-ack'.
He gives her a look. Nope...no one there still.
CLAYTON Cleaved it clean in two.
A nod/grunt from the smoker. So small that it might not have happened.
CLAYTON glances at her again.
DARCY's eyes are still vacant.
CLAYTON Darcy? If you didn't want to see me, what you come in here for?
DARCY It's good to get out of the house sometimes.
He nods.
She stares at her cigarette.
CLAYTON Byrd told me you're worried about your job.
DARCY Town crier.
DARCY motions for a drink refill to the bartender.
CLAYTON Are you going to quit being cryptic or what?
--------
My verdict of the film: 8/10
Link to the timestamp commentary: None (I could have done one for this couldn’t I?)
