Why is the Game Boy Advance my favorite graphical aesthetic when I’m too young to have ever played it?

Hi Shima! You have a lot of Pokemon content on your page and I’m sorta curious about the like, world of Pokemon, so would you have any recommendations on what like game I should start with or what I should watch first? Thanks!
!!! YOOOOO OKAY I GOTCHU ANON. Buckle up bc my 20 years of being a Pokemon fan is about to kick in
As for where to start with the games--this is all really depending on how your own personal playstyle! Do you like games that are more easy going and light on plot? Or do you like ones with heavy amounts of story? Or do you prefer games that are a perfect blend of the two? Pokemon's got a mixed bag of all of the above so you really can't go wrong
If you're into that really nostalgia feel I'd recommend starting out with the first Pokemon game I ever played as a kid, which was Pokemon Emerald! You can actually play this for free by downloading a Gameboy Advance emulator and the Emerald ROM. I have a lot of fond memories of Emerald and it's still one of my favorite games to date. I actually even prefer Emerald over its remakes (Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire) bc it just doesn't quite hit the same lol. I think even without having played Emerald as a kid it'll just spark that nostalgic feeling? It's that kind of game, at least to me :")
Going off of that if you REALLY want to hit nostalgia central and start where it all began, Pokemon FireRed/LeafGreen is also a good game to start out with. It's a remake of Pokemon Red/Blue, which were the first ever Pokemon games that were made. Personally I'm not a super huge Gen 1 fan bc I feel like it's been WAY overdone at this point (it's had two remakes already) but if you've never played a Pokemon game again it's definitely a good starting point. It's barely got any plot so it's really a game you can just dive into and enjoy without focusing too hard on the story. AND as an added bonus, Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver is the direct sequel to Gen 1 (and a remake of the original Gold/Silver/Crystal) so I'd definitely play that one as well, it's lots of fun!
Of course I will also recommend Pokemon Black/White and Black 2/White 2, which is generation 5 and my FAVORITE mainline Pokemon games of all time. BW released right before the transition to the 3D games so it still has sprite art. It's a GORGEOUS game honestly and I think it's really well balanced with story VS gameplay. It's got great characters and fantastic design elements (with everything honestly like the Pokemon designs are great, the character designs are great, the city/town designs are great, etc) and the most KICKASS soundtrack ever (looking at you Driftveil City AKA Toothless dancing meme music). I could go on and on and on about Gen 5 for hours lmao I really hold it near and dear to my heart. Also it's one of the very few games that actually has a sequel which I LOVE. BW2 takes place two years after BW and I love the story and character progression 🥰
Shouting out Pokemon Platinum as well, I know it's a huge fan favorite and honestly I also love it very much!! Platinum came out before BW did so it's got that early DS era feel to it. It's got a decent plot and classic fun gameplay elements. Also Pokemon Legends Arceus which ties directly into Platinum as its prequel (but you should play Platinum first? I know it's confusing lol). PLA is SUPER fucking fun, it's got a completely different gameplay style and mechanic than regular Pokemon games, and it ties in with Platinum so well.
And to my last few recommendations -
Pokemon Sun and Moon!! There's mixed feelings about this one from a lot of people but it's one of my personal favorites...I think people dislike that it's so plot heavy, there's a LOT of dialogue even when starting the game so if you're not into that I wouldn't go with SM. But I LOVE games that are heavy with plot and SM just does it so well. The characterization is really well done and I love watching Lillie go through her development arc 🤧 But yeah it's SM NOT Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon which are like. The same games but Worse. USUM took SM's plot and stomped all over it so I would not go for those lol
And, of courseeee. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet! These are the most recent mainline games to release and ohhh my god. Is the game laggy and bugged out as hell? Yes. Is it also fucking FANTASTIC and has made me cry multiple times? ALSO yes. If you don't mind occasional shitty graphics then please please PLEASE play SV. The open world aspect is a ton of fun, the new Pokemon designs are so charming, the characters are wonderful, and the STORY??? The plot literally blew my socks off the first time I played it. SV endgame you will always be the king of my heart. It's definitely heavier than any previous Pokemon game and it had me reeling for DAYS after. The story is just. So so so good. And we get a continuation of the story kicking ass in the DLC. I love SV to death it really redeemed Pokemon after the disaster that was gen 8 for me (and it's REALLY fun to shiny hunt in).
And LAST but certainly not least. My favorite Pokemon game of all time period ever in the history of Pokemon. Not a mainline game but a side/spinoff game--Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky!! If you want the classic Pokemon experience I probably wouldn't start with this since it's so different from the mainline games but I'd 10000% play it after finishing your first Pokemon game. It's a dungeon crawler, you get to BE a Pokemon, the music is phenomenal, the gameplay is phenomenal, the story is PHENOMENAL, everything about it is incredible and I will love this game until the day I die. I CANNOT recommend it enough. It's so so SO good and it means so much to me I can't even. Please play PMD Sky this goes to everyone who hasn't played it I prommy it's worth it
So basically:
Easy games with no/light plot: FRLG, Emerald, HGSS
Games with a perfect blend of actual gameplay and plot: BW/B2W2, Platinum, PLA
Games that hit HEAVY with plot/storyline: SM, SV, PMD Sky
Honestly you really cannot go wrong no matter where you start out. Even if it's with one of the games I DIDN'T personally recommend, all the mainline games have their own unique charm and each generation has its die hard fans (UNOVA GANG RISE). I've played all of them and they're all enjoyable!
As for the anime, my personal recommendations are the XY saga and the SM saga! The SM saga is my ultimate favorite, it's really cute and charming and fun, with some heavier plot arcs sprinkled in so it's a good blend between lighthearted stuff and more serious story. XY is VERY plot-heavy especially in the latter part, there's a lot of character development and crazy stuff going on, so I'd go for that one if you want to get hit hard with Feels. I haven't watched as much of the anime so I'm sure other people would recommend other seasons (I know the original saga, the Hoenn saga and the DP saga are fan favorites).
I'd also recommend watching the sub instead of the dub,, especially if you haven't grown up watching the Pokemon anime like me the dub is VERY hit or miss. I prefer subs as well bc the dub actually cuts out a LOT of stuff? I know for SM they had fun extra little bits at the beginning and ending of each episode that the dub just. Didn't include. For some reason? Like they'd cut out entire scenes. Idk. It's up to you either way tho ^^
And that is my introduction to Pokemon list.........if anybody has anything to add feel free! These are just my personal recommendations based off of what I like so naturally not everyone will agree lol. If you have any questions anon don't hesitate to ask, I'm always down to talk Pokemon. And I hope you have lots of fun playing whichever game you decide to go with!!

Where to play every main series The Legend of Zelda game (ordered chronologically)
NOTE: when I mention the virtual console for the early games (NES, SNES, GB) it applies to basically every virtual console from Nintendo, not just the Switch. However, many virtual consoles have been discontinued such as the Wii. These are also just off the top of my head and besides a few exceptions are all on Nintendo consoles. I am not as familiar with emulation so I did not include many of those
The original console is listed in parenthesis next to the title which is always another way to play the game if you manage to find a copy, aka you can play ocarina of time on the n64 you just won’t have save states. HD remasters are within the same title since there’s minor changes, complete remakes get their own bullet points since they are a different experience from the original game and include major changes
The Legend of Zelda (NES) - Game and Watch mini console, Nintendo switch online NES virtual console (includes save states, special version also available which starts you with all upgrades and items)
Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link (NES) - Game and Watch mini console, Nintendo switch online NES virtual console (includes save states, special version also available which starts you with all upgrades and items), Hoverbat’s fan remake for PC (includes quality of life changes but keeps the essence and style for the original game)
A Link to the Past (SNES) - Nintendo Switch online SNES virtual console (includes save states), also rereleased on the Gameboy Advance as a bundled game with Four Swords
Link’s Awakening (Gameboy) - rereleased on the Gameboy Color as Link’s Awakening DX (aka the game now has color), Nintendo Switch online gameboy virtual console (includes save states, I believe you can only play DX)
Link’s Awakening HD (Switch) - released in 2019 for the Switch, a complete remake of the original game and has many quality of life changes including an art style update
Ocarina of Time (N64) - requires Nintendo switch online PRO account to play the N64 virtual console (not the regular online membership), was also rereleased on the GameCube twice (one copy includes master edition the other copy includes majora’s mask and the wind waker demo, if you grab a copy you can play it on the Wii as well)
Ocarina of Time 3D (3DS) - A remake of Ocarina of Time for the 3DS, only available on the 3DS
Majora’s Mask (N64) - requires Nintendo switch online PRO account to play the N64 virtual console (not the regular online membership), was also rereleased on the GameCube as a bundle with Ocarina of time (if you grab a copy you can play it on the Wii as well)
Majora’s Mask 3D (3DS) - A remake of Majora’s Mask, only available on the 3DS, I heard the mechanical changes to the game make it a little clunky
Oracle of Seasons (Gameboy Color) - dual release game with Oracle of Ages and can link both games data to unlock a special ending where you fight Ganon and Twinrova, I personally bought this on sale on the 3DS shop before it closed, also on the Gameboy color virtual console for Nintendo Switch Online (includes save states) - PLAY ORDER WITH OOA DOES NOT MATTER
Oracle of Ages (Gameboy Color) - dual release game with Oracle of Seasons and can link both games data to unlock a special ending where you fight Ganon and Twinrova, I personally bought this on sale on the 3DS shop before it closed, also on the Gameboy color virtual console for Nintendo Switch Online (includes save states) - PLAY ORDER WITH OOS DOES NOT MATTER
Four Swords (Gameboy Advance) - multiplayer game, virtually impossible to play today unless you and 3 other friends all have a copy of the original game, 4 GBAs, and linking cables - just watch a playthrough online (although I got headaches from watching playthroughs so brace yourself for a lot of screaming)
The Wind Waker (GameCube) - If you’re able to get your hands on a GameCube and copy I highly recommend it, a remastered HD version was released on the WiiU that included graphical changes as well as major item/discovery changes, can also emulate on Dolphin but the game will completely crash if you use the Pictobox so not recommended if you look to 100% the game (can also link you GBA to the GameCube version to use for the Tingle Tuner mini game)
Four Sword Adventures (GameCube and GBA) - multiplayer game, also virtually impossible to play today unless you have 3 other friends and a GameCube and a copy of the game, I believe you can link you GBA to the game and use that as a controller but I’m not 100% if that’s a requirement or not, I recommend just watching a playthrough but again there seems to be a yelling problem with this game
The Minish Cap (Gameboy Advanced) - I bought a knockoff copy for my GBA on Etsy for like $15 that worked beautifully (just don’t let your gba die while playing the game or else it’ll erase all your data), you can also play on the Nintendo Switch PRO gameboy advance virtual console (with save states)
Twilight Princess (GameCube) - was originally released on GameCube but was rereleased on Wii with I believe motion controls, the Wii version also completely flips the map and Link’s model to fit with right hand motion controls so the game not completely canon (such as TP Link is canonically left handed, not right) , was rereleased as an HD version on WiiU which includes graphical updates
Phantom Hourglass (DS) - requires stylus to play, need physical copy to play but can be played on DS or 3DS
Spirit Tracks (DS) - requires stylus to play, need physical copy to play but can be played on DS or 3DS
Skyward Sword (Wii) - Motion controls are required from my understanding of the Wii version, the HD version released on the Switch makes motion controls optional and has graphical updates (imo the controls are still horrendous on switch)
A Link Between Worlds (3DS) - currently only playable on 3DS
Triforce Heroes (3DS) - meant for multiplayer but has a single player mode, currently only playable on 3DS
Breath of the Wild (WiiU) - rereleased on Switch
Tears of the Kingdom (Switch) - released last year so only on switch
If you want to watch playthroughs for some of the games I recommend Keith Ballard as he started playing the Zelda series for the first time 5 years ago and plays 1-2 games per year (he’s done every 3D game and a few of the 2D and spin off games)
Basically every spinoff game (aka all non canon games - Hyrule warriors, age of calamity, cadence of hyrule) are on the switch, my Nintendo Picross Twilight Princess edition is the only one that became impossible to play once the 3ds eshop closed
For the most part if you have a switch and a hacked 3ds you can play almost every Zelda game. For the wind waker and twilight princess i was able to find a GameCube and Wii copy of their respective games at a retro game store so I highly recommend searching locally. I believe I also got ALTTP gameboy, phantom hourglass, spirit tracks, triforce heroes, and a link between worlds all locally. I also found ocarina of time + the master quest GameCube version for like $50 at half priced books which was one of the biggest wins (i also found tp GameCube there too but it was $150 and didn’t want to pay that much)
If you’re completely new to Zelda I highly recommend with starting with Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask, I actually watched Keith Ballard play both of those games while recovering from surgery and started looking into how I could play all of the games myself. There’s also no shame in watching a playthrough as although Nintendo is good about porting their old games, they are behind so many paywalls. From there you can decide if you want to go through the 3D games (I recommend chronologically by release date) or the 2D games (The Minish Cap and A Link Between Worlds are REALLY good 2D games but I love basically every 2D game except the multiplayer games so I honestly recommend playing all of them fjdkslf) . DON’T WORRY ABOUT THE TIMELINE!!! Just play the games how you want bc the timeline does not matter at all and was shoehorned into the series after like most of the games were released so it’s like trying to fit puzzles pieces that don’t fit together

Blog Introduction
Hi there! I'm Mags & I want to take you all with me on my Pokemon adventure. ^-^
Tumblr media
I somehow missed the Pokemon craze growing up. I never watched the anime, collected the cards, and despite having both a gameboy and a gameboy advance, I never played the games. When a friend learned this, I was given Leaf Green in high school but it was years before I got around to playing it.
Around 2016 when Pokemon GO came out, I dusted off my Leaf Green and gave it a try. I knew a few Pokemon from pop culture references, and of the ones I did know, eevee was my favorite. I put a few hours into the game when I finally obtained one from a man in Celadon city. My friend asked which eeveelution I was going to pick. I turned to them and asked how to catch more eevees because I wanted all the eeveelutions... that's when I got the news that made me stop playing pokemon for years: This is the only obtainable eevee in the game.
Tumblr media
I. Was. Heartbroken. They said they could trade one in from another game, but I knew it wouldn't be the same. It's not /my/ eevee. So I put the game down. I didn't think I'd ever pick it back up. How could I pick just one? It wasn't until many years later that I learned of Pokemon breeding. I could have gotten a ditto and hatched more eevees. But by then, I had already walked away.
I could appreciate why people enjoyed the franchise, and even made some friends in the TCG community, but it wasn't for me. Until some very kind friends gifted me a switch for my birthday this year. Everything changed for me. I. Became. Obsessed. I suddenly had access to more Pokemon than I could dream of. Brilliant Diamond. Pokemon Legends: Arceus. Sword. Scarlet. Pokemon Snap.
So I started my Pokemon adventure in July 2023. I started with Brilliant Diamond but quickly swapped to Scarlet to play with some friends.
Tumblr media
I decided to give myself a challenge to keep my interest for many years: a full form living pokedex.
Every form of each Pokemon ever available.
All in pokeballs (except event)
My OT whenever possible (exceptions are old events)
Very few POGO Pokemon to not have the stamped sprites
Complete for both the regular and shiny forms
To keep it organized, I modified a spreadsheet by Austin John. I've combined both regular and shiny, changed the way the % is calculated, hid superfluous info, added notes, and reorganized so the shiny and regular forms would be next to each other in home.
Tumblr media
So, how am I going to actually pull off this crazy adventure when I'm just now starting in 2023?
Firstly, I'm going to recognize that this is not a short term project. There are a lot of Pokemon, in a lot of forms, in a lot of games. I'm going to need to use my switch, a friend's 3DS, and POGO to get every form.
Start with the easiest Pokemon to obtain and get full forms, shiny hunt a bit, but mostly focus on each form for now between Scarlet, Sword, Brilliant Diamond, Let's Go: Eevee, and Pokemon Legends: Arceus.
For the vivillon forms, I will use PoGo postcards to get both the forms and their shinies. When possible, hunt with a friend with a different postcard to knock 2 out at the same time.
For shiny hunting, I respect people that hunt with full odds, but I'm going to use every tool that Pokemon gives me, I have decades of time to make up for. (Masuda, Outbreaks, Sandwiches, Shiny Charms, Hunting with a friend to get 2 at once, Catch combos, you name it: I'm gonna use it)
When the bulk of the non-shiny forms are completed, I'll move onto the 3DS games. In these games, I will need to get every form and shinies before I return it. There will be at least 4 playthroughs of Omega Ruby (each form of Deoxys), and I'm sure more of another as well.
And Lastly, I'll keep in mind that there will be some really tough Pokemon for me to get following my parameters. Celebi, Furfrou, Pokeball Vivillon, Pikachu Hats, and I'm sure many more. I will have to concede some of my parameters for obtaining such Pokemon.
But I'm gonna keep at it, and keep record of my adventures here in this blog. Thank you for reading all of this, I would love if you joined me on my Pokemon journey. ^-^

I've never owned a DS before and I'm really interested in purchasing one but I have no idea which one I should go with. I know there's the regular, the 3ds and the XL, so which one would you recommend?
Depends on your preference! I‘m gonna go a bit into detail here so you know what you’re buying, and there’s a TLDR in bold at the bottom, but if it’s still too muddled please don’t hesitate to ask!
Also, disclaimer, whenever I talk about pricing it’s from my own perspective, so for all we know, I could buy something super cheap that’s really expensive for you and vise versa, so it’s better to check it for yourself still.
For starters, there‘s quite a lot of different versions of the console, with the og DS and 3DS even counting as their two separate lines.
Generally speaking I’d say go with a 3DS, as they can also play every DS game on top of their own (which doesn’t work the other way around) and the hardware’s only half as old, so it’s less likely to die on you in the near future. However that makes them more expensive, too.
XL just means bigger screen/console. It’s just like when a phone comes out in regular and big size. For some folks the added space is too much to properly hold it anymore, for others the regular size is too small to do anything. Depends on your preference. For comparison:
Tumblr media
The DSi and New 3DS are both kinda like "upgraded“ versions of the DS/3DS, respectively.
Left is a DSi, right is a New 3DS XL. They both have the same sizes as their normal counterparts, so the size comparison still works. (Ignore the low screen light on the DSi, I just didn’t bother changing it back lol. On Max brightness they‘re the same.)
If you don’t plan on playing any Gameboy Advance games, absolutely go with a DSi instead of a regular DS. They go for the same price (at least here) but the DSi has better hardware and way more functions, while being way less of a brick compared to the og DS. Apparently the max screen brightness is also higher than the og? Idk tho.
Theres also the DS lite, which is a DS that looks like a DSi, but again. Same price, might as well go with the upgrade. In any case, they’re also both harder to accidentally snap in two than the og model lol.
The New 3DS only has better hardware but no new software compared to the regular 3DS. But it’s got extra buttons! Very rarely used, but they exist. It’s kinda like 60 fps vs 30 fps, if that makes sense? The hardware difference is noticeable especially right after you switch, but you can also live without it, and sometimes it doesn’t make that big of a difference.
Like, if I play Hyrule Warriors, the regular 3DS is barely holding it together on 20fps and can’t even do 3D while the New one‘s playing pretty smooth and lets you play with 3D. And only THEN does the N3DS goes down on the same level as the regular 3DS because it’s essentially playing the game in double for the 3D effect to work. Meanwhile Mario Bros 2 plays the exact same on both of them.
What you could also do, is get a 2DS. It’s like a 3DS, but in 2D. All the features of a 3DS except for the whole 3D gimmick, so it’s basically like the Switch Lite. You also can’t fold it like the other ones, unless you get a New 2DS XL, which is foldable again, but that ones‘ price range is all over the place. The normal 2DS seems to sell generally cheaper than all the other 3DS consoles, at least.
TLDR: your options are a
DS
DS Lite
DSi
DSi XL
For the regular DS line, and for the 3DS line a
3DS
3DS XL
New 3DS
New 3DS XL
2DS
New 2DS XL
If you only have under 100 bucks or don’t care about 3DS games,I‘d say go with one of the DSi. All consoles of the DS go for more or less the same price, and it’s got the best hardware and features of them.
If you’ve got extra pocket change, go with any of the 3DS consoles instead, as there’s just more games for it on top of a better hardware and less age. Your cheapest option is a 2DS, but a regular 3DS isn’t that far off either. They might even go for the same price, if you’re lucky? If you wanna, you can go also with a New 3DS if it’s a lot of pocket change.
And if you vibe with a bigger screen, take the XL version of whatever line you chose! Except for the 2DS XL, somehow its 3D counterpart is cheaper than the 2D XL again.
Also, ALL of these consoles come in multiple colors!
TLDRTDLR: DSi for price or any of the 3DS line for more games, imo
…and if you get any of them and the shoulder buttons are broken, that’s completely normal. You can drop them 100 times and the console is fine, but play Mario Kart too often and the shoulder buttons stop working lmao.

So that Nintendo Direct was mostly just okay but at least I got:
Actual Pikmin 4 gameplay (we're getting a dog in this one!)
Remaster (like an actual one) of Metroid Prime 1. While I REALLY would have a prefered the whole trilogy I do think this remastered looks pretty neat. I just hope that it won't cost more then 30 euro max (please don't pull this shit again Nintendo).
An HD collection of Baten Kaitos 1 and 2
More gameplay of Tears of The Kingdom (and was that Ganodorf speaking in the trailer?)
FINALLY a release date for Advance Wars Re-Boot Camp
Gameboy/Color/Advance are FINALLY coming to NSO, with regular GB games for regular NSO and Color and Advance for the Expansion Pass. I wish I could just BUY these old games like I could on the Wii and Wii U but this is still something (pirating these is perfectly okay in may book).
Oh and Hector from Fire Emblem 7 as a summon in Fire Emblem Engage's Expansio Pass. Neat!
All in all it was a decent first Direct of the year.

#FREE GAMEBOY COLOR EMULATOR FOR ANDROID PORTABLE#
#FREE GAMEBOY COLOR EMULATOR FOR ANDROID ANDROID#
It has been downloaded by a million users, which is amazing.īut, there’s one thing that turns off some people: the ads. GBA Emulator is one of the most popular, easy-to-use emulator that is free.
#FREE GAMEBOY COLOR EMULATOR FOR ANDROID PORTABLE#
Even the sounds in this app sound just like the real portable console which brings back memories.ĭownload Brick Games on Play Store GBA Emulator It is brick game that consists of easy-to-play but challenging many games sorted from A to Z. Well, in my childhood it was called GameBoy. It is only 13MB, and a different kind of GameBoy game. This app has been downloaded over 10 million times, with pretty good star ratings. You can get this emulator for free.ĭownload SuperGBC on Play Store Brick Game It has a pretty classic and old interface but has the best performance because of it. You can play Nintendo games here by downloading the zip files and let this app scan the files. Just other emulators, this one isn’t involved or endorsed with Nintendo in any way. Maybe it works on Samsung, Xiaomi, and Nokia, too.
#FREE GAMEBOY COLOR EMULATOR FOR ANDROID ANDROID#
This GBC emulator doesn’t really explain its features in Play Store, but it has a good reputation because it works pretty well with almost all Android devices. The simple interface makes the app works on a low-end device. Liquid Crystal cheats can be used in many ways. #Pokemon liquid crystal cheats emulator Pc.#Pokemon liquid crystal cheats emulator code.#Pokemon liquid crystal cheats emulator Patch.Just recently I was able to play through Pokemon Liquid Crystal, which also happens to be one of the most visually striking ROM hacks for FireRed that I’ve ever played. Code - Pokemon Liquid Crystal Code: Effect: 91ff57d8 + 91ff58d8, Have All Badges 91ff57d9, Have All PokeGear Items 910f4ed8 + 91424fd8 + 913f50d8, Infinite. The game is a re-imagining of Pokemon Crystal (for the GBC) and features a dynamic Day & Night system that simulates the passing of time. I’ve limited the cheat codes listed here for Pokemon Liquid Crystal to only those that aren’t game-breaking. the gameshark cheats for Pokemon fire red work on Pokemon liquid crystal because it's the exact same game type it's just a hack of Pokemon fire red D. I know you’ve probably read this every time I write a cheat code guide for other Pokemon ROM hacks but it’s always best to enjoy these games in the manner that their creators intended. There’s also an option to use as many cheats as you want but if you’ve played enough Pokemon ROM hacks then you’ll understand that the probability of your game crashing will be quite high. With that being said, here are a couple of cheat codes that you’ll want to enable when you’ve loaded Pokemon Liquid Crystal on your GBA4iOS. Making a little collection post about these things that have helped me since the supply chain got fucked up really bad and also just in general! A lot of these are YT videos but some have supplementals I’ve added. DON’T WAIT until you need something to learn how to do it if you can avoid it. But this is not a list of “apocalyptic how-to’s”, we aren’t learning to make paper from scratch or sew our own clothes, we can’t all can our own veggies (and canning materials are short anyway), this is a list of depression-era-style fixes and right-to-repair concepts!
I know a lot of people who just can’t be assed to fix anything and that’s fine because then I get to have it and I do want to fix it.
Bonus Negotiating tip for "getting to yes” on FB marketplace: say “thanks in advance, God bless” at the end of your initial message. Don’t forget to capitalize God. 😉 ● How to Darn Socks by Last Minute Laura - I want to add to this that it’s okay if you don’t do this perfectly or if it seems ugly when you’re finished, it’s probably still going to work fine! Embroidery needles and thread (sometimes in the form of a kit) are EASY to find at thrift stores, and especially used art supply stores. Related: 50 Hand Embroidery Stitches by Handiworks ● Simple Guide to Electronic Components and Soldering Basics by BigClive - Soldering is so so so handy to have some basic knowledge and skill in. I use it to do Gameboy mod kits but it also helped me feel confident in replacing little burnt out fuses, capacitors, etc. If I could have found a replacement relay I would have fixed my kettle! Pick up a multimeter if you can! Learn to use it! Related:  Soldering Is Easy comic by MightyOhm, and pretty much any Nintendo repair video, I recommend starting out on doing a simple shell swap or a gameboy IPS kit and going from there when it comes to electronics. Do not do a Joycon shell or a DS first.
● How to Replace an iPhone SE Screen by JerryRigEverything - There are a ton of videos or written tutorials for almost models of devices. I put this not because no one has ever heard of replacing your phone screen (lol) but because it is increasingly difficult to repair devices and with EXACTLY the right parts. You will often have to find your year model or even serial number and then do research on which parts are compatible/behave - usually someone will already have done the legwork so you’re like “aha this is the battery that will work in my 1st gen Paperwhite ereader”. Many phones and devices have pain in the ass adhesives so you “can’t” fix them. Do yourself a favor and get a good, plastic safe spudger and prying tools. Related: iFixit kits which are better than ever, Jailbreaking with Hexxa Plus ● Fix a KitchenAid Mixer that isn’t Spinning by ereplacementparts - I bring in this one because sometimes a scary, seemingly broken expensive item can be bought for very little and fixed very easily. There’s a YT video for like EVERYTHING. You will quickly learn to recognize how things GET broken and what their most likely problem is. I buy “untested” vintage point and shoot cameras all the time and usually they literally just need a new battery lol. Lots of things just need cleaned or need new grease or something, or have a broken trace/burnt fuse/broken plastics etc. See Soldering above. ● Oil Change on a TW200 by tdubskid - This is just to stand in as an example of some regular maintenance and familiarity with your vehicles. Not everything is as easy as a good ol’ Tdub but it’s worth getting the owner’s AND service manual for your vehicles so you can at least take care of it well so that it needs LESS maintenance and know when it is need of maintenance and how urgent it is even if you cannot perform it yourself. Plus, again, tons of YT videos and forum threads. Note: I highly recommend that if your vehicle is under warranty of any kind you don’t do your own oil changes/service or get service anywhere except certified dealerships until that warranty expires. Related: How to Change a Tire (plus jacking it up) by Chrisfix (this is a great full walkthrough! I KNOW most people have never done this - and check your spare once in awhile too)
● Learn to use hand tools and power tools safely. Go ask a family member or a friend to show you how to use them, I’m sure anyone who has them would LOVE to help you and show you what they’re working on. Get a manual impact philips screwdriver and a regular old rubber mallet and thank me later. See if someone’s grandpa is getting rid of their extra wrenches and sockets. Pick up cheap name brand power tools and their accompanying (watch the voltage) batteries and chargers when you can. People will act like you have to “pick a system” and have all one brand but who gives a fuck dude, I don’t. Get a little metal/wood hacksaw and a metal/wood file. Get safety goggles and some coated grip work gloves. Get a cheap soldering iron and some lead-free solder wire (and a fan lol.) Get a set of torx bits/drivers. Don’t be afraid to ask people how to do things. Give away or sell your tools when you don’t use them anymore. Last one but this is very important: Put stickers all over your toolboxes!

I'm sure nobody will care about this, but oof. So, I've been playing on my Switch a lot, but after beating Hollow Knight for the 5th time, I decided that I wanted to go back to the Mario and Luigi games, since I really enjoyed replaying Bowser's Inside Story.
I did also beat Superstar Saga back in November, on my old Gameboy Advance, so I thought I'd try Partners in Time first. Now, when I first bought PiT, I got it for £3 at a second hand game shop because I had been trying to get back into the series at the time (I was 17-18 so this was 6 years ago now. Shop closed 4 years ago).
The cartridge wasn't in the best condition, the sticker on the front felt a bit tacky, but I played it on my DS Lite since I didn't know about backwards compatibility at the time. I beat the game twice then forgot about it, but then I just decided today that I wanted to replay it! However, I only have my 3DS XL because my old DS Lite is broken now.
The game doesn't load, so I do all the regular stuff: I blow into the game slot, I wipe the cartridge, then I just Google the possible problems when it doesn't work. That's when I found someone asking for help with the same game, same problem as me.
Their problem? Their cartridge turned out to be bootleg. A fake. See, this is the real copy:
Tumblr media
Note the letters on the bottom? The middle one, ARME, were different for the one asking for help. Theirs read ABJP. And wouldn't you know it...
Tumblr media
Brilliant. Well, I'm gonna try and buy a legitimate copy.
Thanks for listening to my ramblings.

Some Of The Things That Made My Childhood Great (P3)
Tumblr media
Pokemon, Mario, Donkey Kong, link cables, infrared. Need I say more? Truly childhood defying devices
Tumblr media
One of the coolest things I ever owned was this Sega Game Gear. I had a really hard Batman game with it and Sonic. This thing required a sh!t load of batteries and blew through them fast, but had a backlight color display. It was well ahead of the Gameboy Color and Advance, but it just didn’t catch on. It costed too much, was heavy and bulky. Oddly I remember this had a antenna attachment so you could watch tv on the go, I never got that but I thought it was the coolest thing
Tumblr media
I remember seeing this thing all the time in the store Hills, which became Aims, which now doesn’t exist, and honestly thought the idea of it was pretty cool. A handheld gaming system that could connect to the internet and had a touch screen, it sounded like the future, expect is wasn’t. I got this on clearance after it bombed sales wise, it wasn’t particularly great at anything it claimed to do and needed an attachment to go online. I thought it looked cool tho
Tumblr media
My mom really went all out that Christmas. It was awesome. I got this and like 4 games, plus two for my GBA. I’d come home from school everyday, pop a few beef burritos in the microwave and plop down on my bed and play some Crash Team Racing, life was good
Tumblr media
I remember reading a magazine before this came out that showed it white with orange buttons, it looked amazing. When it actually came out there was no white and orange version, it was just a prototype. I did get the regular white one (with grey buttons). This also released around the same time as Pokemon Crystal, and the epic era of the GBA began.
Tumblr media
This was a birthday present, it was subsequently my first DVD player. My first PS2 game? Metal Gear Solid 2. Followed by GTA 3, all friends would come over, cram into my tiny bedroom and play with the cheat codes “everyone has weapons” and “everyone hates you” activated and see who could last the longest. Getting bazooka’d by an old granny never got old.
Tumblr media
Clamshell redesign, backlit screen, rechargeable battery and a strategically timed release around the same time as Pokemon Ruby & Sapphire. Primo 👌
Tumblr media
My favorite console of its generation, while I had great fun with the PS2, the GameCube was where my heart was, and where I had the most fun and best memories. Destroying my friends in Super Smash Brothers Melee, and Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance was awesome, but Animal Crossing was arguably my favorite game, while Mario Kart Double Dash was a mainstay in my household.
Tumblr media
Finding out the next gameboy wouldn’t be a gameboy was a hard sell, but a promise of a port of Mario 64 (with 3 new playable characters), wireless and online play, plus reverse compatibility with the gameboy and I was in. And so the DS era began
Tumblr media
Everything about the PSP seemed amazing. I got it on launch day, and the launch titles honestly weren’t great, but a promise of a fully capable GTA and Metal Gear game had me in for the long run. This thing was a powerhouse
