Stranded. (small teaser)
‼️RPF‼️
Julien x singer! Reader - enemies to lovers
Tumblr media
(based on one of my requests! 🤭🤭🤭)
Description: after missing your flight to toronto for your next tour stop. you’re stranded in a random city with nothing but $20, a guitar, a suitcase full of clothes and a small tattooed guitarist who seems to not like you very much.
————-
“know where you’re going?”
“of course i fucking know where i’m going” you huffed, one hand on the suitcase, the other hand gripping the phone, google maps displayed on the screen.
“doesn’t seem like it.” you snap your head to glare at the other person beside you. she’s staring at the sky, cigarette between her lips. leaned up against the wall, suitcase settled beside her with the guitar case propped up on the ground.
“have you nothing better to do than complain?” you tilted your head, squinting as the rain splashed down aggressively on your head. one hand over your eyes. the tattooed woman shrugged her shoulders. “s’kinda fun watching you just give out” she gave a nod towards the phone in your hand “stop getting distracted princess. we have places to be”
“we have places to be” you mocked in a high pitched tone as you rolled your eyes “and whose fault is it that we’re in this situation?”
“hey, don’t blame me! blame the taxi cab”
“ oh yeah. i’ll blame the taxi driver who was late bringing us to the airport because you lost your goddamn phone in the hotel room” you waved your arms in the air as your voice got louder
“how could i leave my phone there? it had all my documents, my lyrics and bank details on it!” julien snapped back.
“we missed the fucking flight, julien! a flight to goddamn canada! we’re in california” you sighed loudly, getting more annoyed.
“there isn’t any more flights this week, due to this stupid fucking storm. we’re stranded here and we have a show in two days” you wiped the rain off the phone screen, zooming in to look at the nearest location to a hotel.
“it’s fine-“ julien leaned off the wall. grabbing her suitcase and guitar. “get a cheap hotel for the night, rent a car and drive over to toronto, simple. we’ll make it there in no time”
“that’s easy for you to say” you scoffed, walking ahead of her, following the map.
“it’s true. what’s the worst that can happen?”

HARTFORD WOLF PACK SEASON PREVIEW 2022-23
Tumblr media
HARTFORD WOLF PACK SEASON PREVIEW 2022-23 By: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT - Hartford Wolf Pack training camp is completed. The pre-season games are over, and the NHL waiver wire moves have all been made. Now, the real fun begins as the 26th edition of the Hartford Wolf Pack begins as they embark on a season-opening road trip to the Queen City and have a two-game set to commence the unified 72-game AHL regular season with the Charlotte Checkers to erase the sting of last year’s  8-20-2 ending. “I always have preferred starting on the road and not at home. There's so much pressure and excitement when you play at home. It adds that pressure on you. It’s better to go on the road and be together, traveling and doing some (early) team building," Wolf Pack Head Coach Kris Knoblauch said as he was preparing to leave for Charlotte. The team received its last forward from New York, Julien Gauthier, late Monday. He started his career in Charlotte when they were the AHL home for the Carolina Hurricanes. He had his best season with 27 goals in 75 games in their Calder Cup championship season in 2018-19. He was a former 1st-round pick (19th overall) in 2016. He played 184 games with the Checkers and has 96 NHL games to his credit. His tenure is likely to be short as he will be looking for a fresh opportunity elsewhere. “The Rangers shopped him around a few weeks ago, and now he’s gone through waivers. (He’s) got to have a good start to get interest,” said a knowledgeable hockey source. Gauthier reported and will sport the #77 on his jersey. That bumped Alex Whelan (Quinnipiac University) off the roster and down to the team's ECHL affiliate, the Jacksonville Icemen. “He’s a heckva hockey player, he was so dominant when he played in Charlotte at the beginning of his career and he brings physicality and goal scoring to our team. Nothing is ever long term in the American (Hockey) League. He’s with us now and were gonna help him out as much as possible and get the best we can while he is here and he is committed to playing hard for the Wolf Pack as much as possible to get back to the NHL, “ remarked Knoblauch. Head coach Kris Knoblauch enters the fourth season with no post-season action and the team's eighth consecutive season after Hartford making it their first 14 straight years. The team thoroughly purged its lineup with a whole new cast of characters. The emphasis is on character players and bridging the rock cliff divide last year in scoring between the top six and bottom six of their lineup. “Having good veterans to help you win hockey games and help out our younger players improve is always important. It’s early in the year, but I’ve been impressed with the leadership of the new parts we brought in. Turner (Elson) and (Andy) Zelinski have done very well for us and have been great additions, and we'll find out more this weekend, but they have helped our leadership tremendously,” said Knoblauch. Making sure players get the playing time they need was a major consideration in keeping those in Hartford and dispatching others to Jacksonville. “We want players to be playing, not sitting around here," Knoblauch said emphatically. One top-end prospect he wanted here last year and will be here after a pandemic season introduction two years ago is Will Cullye. He played center then, though now he is ticketed for the left wing at the start of the season. “He’ll move up and down our lineup. For now he’s playing the left side with Jonny Brodzinski. He's already on the second unit powerplay and will get some experience penalty killing, and we'll hope he grows. He had a good camp in New York. We're just hoping he’ll develop into even a better hockey player here," Knoblauch said. Last year's Hobey Baker winner, Bobby Trivigno, had a very strong training camp on both sides of the puck. Along with Cullye, he leads a rookie group including draftees Matt Rempe (Seattle-WHL) and Ryder Korczak (Moose Jaw-WHL). "He’s gonna play more games for one thing. He’ll learn the type of hockey he’ll need to play. He’s a very good hockey player, who had very good collegiate career. Now he has to transfer that to the pro level. There has so much potential here. He will likely be key contributor for us.” Another who will be looked at to take a big step forward will be second-year pro, Lauri Pajuniemi. He was not happy at the end of last season. He performed well in camp and in both pre-season games and is expected to be a catalyst on the second power play unit playing on his off-wing. “He’ll have to do a lot of work to be recalled. He can shoot, but we’ll be using him with Jonny Brodzinski and Julien Gauthier on the powerplay. Shooting is a big part of his game and he has a hard shot and being around the net will allow him to score more goals. For his game to get better he has less room and less time you can’t hold onto the puck too long and we have identified that in his game.” He has been working on a line with Elson and Fritz, but that is not cemented in stone. They have looked good in practice, scored some goals, and have shown some good chemistry." A pair of Swedes will dot the lineup at center. They are draftees Karl Henriksson and free agent signee, Gustav Rydahl. “They’re two different types of players in their development stage. Rydahl has played pro for quite some time now. I think to make the jump, they (the Rangers) hope he can continue to get better and learn the North American game better in Hartford. The organization was happy with his play at camp, though he’s not quite ready yet, or they couldn't find a spot for him at this point. Karl is real prospect with lots of upside potential, and where he’s gonna fit in our lineup.” Patrick Khordorenko is back playing on the last year of his Entry Level Contract as is the resigned Austin Rueschhoff. “Patrick played very well and was probably our best forward the last six weeks of the season. He’s a depth player at center for us right now. Austin has the size and everybody is looking for a player with the size who can score. When he plays his best, he’s playing physical. He went on a tear in January where he had six goals in five games. He can certainly deliver and has the potential to breakout.” Captain Jonny Brodzinki and now veteran forward Tim Gettinger will lead the 25 members of the Wolf Pack. Paired together on the #1-line last year, they will be split up on the first two lines to start the season. Tanner Fritz will be called upon to play his usual swing role at forward. “Jonny was so good for us and then he went up to New York. Tim was injured for us in the second half. When he played, he was spot on. I have no worries in play from either player.” The defense will have a whole new set of players with off-season signings in Andy Welinski from the (AHL) Stockton Heat (Calgary Flames) and Ty Emberson of the (AHL) Tucson Roadrunners (Phoenix Coyotes). Returning are Matt Robertson and Zach Giuttari (Loomis Chafee), Hunter Skinner, and late-season addition Brandon Scanlin as the only holdovers from last season. The defense has always been seen as an organizational surplus, and the team will carry eight d-men to start the regular season. “We have a lot of returning players coming back entering their second season. You’re anticipating and always think they’re ready to take that next step up; that’s not always the case; some do, and some don’t, but I think these guys are ready to do that. We have a lot more experience on defense than at forward, and they have to learn to play together and be themselves. Tim Theocharidis, who almost played his way on the lineup like Mason Geersten did two years ago, was sent to Jacksonville. However, the former ASU product was on an ECHL contract, not an AHL deal. In net, Louie Domingue, who buried them last year in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, is guarding their cage now. Knoblauch is enthusiastic about starting with him and hopefully will have a better relationship with him than he had with the talented but mercurial Keith Kinkaid and the ineffectual Tyler Wall, who are both now in Providence and South Carolina (ECHL), respectively. “Very sociable guy, and everybody likes to be around. He has spent time on the ice with (other) goalies helping them out with certain things. Our starter on opening night is still to be diagnosed. Dylan Garand, the young prodigy out of Kamloops (WHL) who was signed mid-season last year to his ELC deal, will be a work in progress for the undersized but proficient goalie at the bottom end of the height scale wanted in pro hockey. “I just spoke to him, and he says 'I’m the same height as Igor Shesterkin.' So, if Igor can pull of his play (Vezina winner) never underestimate an undersized goalie,” remarked Knoblauch. Swedish player Olof Lindbom, the third goalie, will start the season with the Pack. Depending on playing time, he could be sent back to Sweden or to an unaffiliated ECHL team, or a loan deal worked. “He is gonna stay here in North America in Jacksonville or Hartford; that is still to be determined. He is technically sound and a very strong goalie. It’s very different in North America there is more traffic in front and a lot more small details to work on. We think very highly of him.” NOTES: Defenseman Ben Harpur, 27, is the latest to join the Wolf Pack as a late addition after splitting the 2021-22 season between the Nashville Predators and Milwaukee Admirals. With the Predators, Harpur appeared in 19 games and registered an assist. While with the Admirals, Harpur skated in six games and recorded five penalty minutes. He has played in 176 career AHL games, scoring 56 points (7 goals, 49 assists) with the Admirals, Toronto Marlies, Belleville Senators, and Binghamton Senators. Harpur also served as an Alternate Captain for the Binghamton Senators during the 2017-18 season. Harpur was selected in the fourth round (108th overall) by the Ottawa Senators in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. Harpur has appeared in 156 career NHL games with the Senators and Predators, where he registered 15 points (1 goal and 14 assists). He scored his first and only NHL goal on December 1st, 2018, against the San Jose Sharks. Vitali Kravtsov sustained an upper-body injury in the Rangers opening night 3-1-win Tuesday over the Tampa Bay Lightning. He was out of the lineup in the 7-3 win over the Minnesota Wild and will not affect the Pack line-up. Talyn Boyko, the 18-year-old goalie, after being released from his ATO in Hartford and being reassigned to Jacksonville before heading back to Kelowna (WHL) as per the NHL-CHL agreement, signed his three-year ELC deal with the Rangers for $850K-NHL/$77,750K-AHL. Ranger newcomer draftee, Ryder Korczak, saw his older brother Kaedan get assigned to the Henderson Silver Knights by Vegas along with Peter DiLiberatore (Quinnipiac University-ECACHL). The Wolf Pack will have a new skills development coach. Colin Downey replaces  Casey Torres, who was replaced by Jamie Tardif as the assistant coach this year. Torres departure was handled very quietly and efficiently.  It's not clear if it was mutual, his or the Pack's choice. Downey played collegiately at D3 Bowdoin College (NESCAC) in Maine and then professionally in Europe for eight years in France with Tours, HC Cholet, HC Mulhouse, Mont Blanc, and HC Courbevoie between France Division 2 and the French Elite League in the Magnus league. Ex-Pack Pierre-Cédric Labrie gets a contract upgrade from a two-year AHL deal from Syracuse to a one-year, two-way deal with Tampa Bay at $770,800K-NHL/$100,000K-AHL. He was put on waivers to return to Syracuse with a few more dollars in his bank account. Syracuse announced they and the Lightning have extended their affiliation agreement another five years to 2026-27. Rangers draftee Bryce McConnell-Barker was named captain of his OHL team, the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. Brennan Othmann is named winner of the Lars-Erik Sjoberg Award as the best rookie in the Rangers' camp and was reassigned to Flint (OHL) last week. Bridgeport Islanders made their last cuts sending to the Worcester Railers (ECHL) Ken Appleby, Trevor Cosgrove, Blade Jenkins, Connor McCarthy, Reece Newkirk, and Henrik Tikkanen. Former goalie C.J. Motte is sent from the Iowa Wild camp as the last cut to the Iowa Heartlanders (ECHL) camp. Richard Pánik heads off to Lausanne HC (Switzerland-LNA) on a loan basis. Matthias Samuelsson (no relation to Ulf) is the son of former New Haven Nighthawk Kjell. He signs a one-year ELC contract extension with Buffalo. Adam Samuelsson, the youngest son of Ulf. He leaves Idaho (ECHL) camp just before it starts. No new destination was announced. Goalie Jon Gillies (Salisbury School) was sent to Tucson (AHL). Last year he played with four teams, two AHL, and two NHL. Ethan Cardwell, the nephew of ex-New Haven Knight Matt, is sent back to Barrie Colts (OHL) from the San Jose Barracuda camp. Last season's Pack player, Zach Berzolla, was one of the last cuts in Rochester. He was assigned to Cincinnati (ECHL). Undrafted Tye McSorley, the nephew of former Nighthawk Chris and Springfield coach and ex-Ranger his other uncle Marty, is with Greenville (ECHL) camp. Chris’s son, Aidan, is playing pro hockey in Switzerland with HC Pegassona-Ceregio (Switzerland Division-1). Father Chris is looking for work as he was just fired as the head coach of HC Lugano. Ex-Pack Lewis-Zerter Gossage (Kent School) is heading from Maine (ECHL) back over to Germany to Eisbären Berlin (Germany-DEL) and has been loaned out Lausitzer Füchse (Germany DEL-2). Our NHL source out West reports things in the Western Conference of the AHL are looking good. “San Jose has got a great new place and Coachella Valley seems on target and having the good weather allows you to hit construction timelines. It’s looking good out there (West).” When discussing the NHL's new setup in the ASU arena in Phoenix, the source said, “It's beautiful and brand new however it’s still a college rink, but I’ll try to avoid it if I can.” HARTFORD WOLF PACK HOME Read the full article

Simpson is a Richmond-based singer and rapper who you may also know as Babe Simpson, one-fourth of the Tumblr-born rap collective Barf Troop. They dazed the internet back in the early 2010s with their uncensored, forward-thinking rhymes and aesthetics, and even got the attention of Drake. Though the collective has gone silent in recent years, Simpson has since cultivated her own steady following around her soft, and ruminative tunes. Her latest is 'Cherry Ice Cream Sundae,' a song about "treating ourselves with as much tenderness as we treat everyone else," she says, and is backed by a lush landscape of jazzy guitars and drums — a sound that could be considered a close sibling to the rap lullabies of Noname. Simpson's now sharing the song's peculiar video, which features a charming but eerie cast of marionette puppets. Over email, Simpson explains that she wrote the song after experiencing "a feeling that I’ve always been trying to put into words but I don’t think I was mature enough to be able to sing. I reached my breaking point where I was like, f*ck it, whatever happens, happens, and I’m gonna look on the bright side everywhere I can. I’m going to 'smile because I can.' I actually changed the original opening lyrics from 'The world is in the shitter' to 'Life is kind to who’s kind to it back.' The world has always been in the shitter, but that hasn’t made it any less special or sweet. I think that’s made me much more of a realist. I recorded it tipsy, upside down, hanging off my bed as a freestyle, and it felt so natural saying and listening to it back made me feel so proud." [via NYLON]

Earlier this week, Lana Del Rey revealed the artwork and tracklist for her new album Chemtrails Over The Country Club. Back in October, Del Rey shared the album’s lead single 'Let Me Love You Like A Woman.' It was the first song she shared from the album after postponing its planned September release. Now, she’s sharing the album’s second single and title track. She’s also announced that Chemtrails Over The Country Club will be out March 19. In a lengthy interview with BBC Radio 1 — during which she talked about the Trump insurrection and her album cover controversy — she mentioned that Jack Antonoff produced much of the album, minus 'Yosemite,' which was produced with Rick Nowels. Watch a music video for the album’s title track, directed by BRTHR, above. In a different kind of statement, prior to the release of the 'Chemtrails Over The Country Club' music video, Del Rey explained why she is wearing a cast in it: "When you see my second video for this album, don’t think that the fact I’m wearing a cast is symbolic for anything other than thinking I was still a pro figure skater. I wiped out on my beautiful skates before the video even began after a long day of figure eights and jumps in the twilight of the dezert. Anyways my fracture isn’t that bad kind of goes with my new bucket hat. Thanks to my beautiful family for my gifts." [via Stereogum]

Joining forces for the new uplifting track, G Flip and mxmtoon are sharing new empowerment anthem ‘Queen’, produced by Rostam Batmanglij. "'Queen' was written about the strong women around me, the queens that raised me and the queens I’ve met through my years,” G Flip explains. “My idea of a queen is not necessarily linked to gender; queens come in all forms and walks of life. To me a queen embodies power and strength; they embrace all they are fiercely yet gracefully. The song was written one sunny day in LA, I was chillin on Rostam’s lovely white couch and he turned around to me and said ‘how about we write a song about Queens’ and I replied with ‘F@!K yeah!’. I’m also super stoked to have mxmtoon on the track with me, she is an absolute queen. I first was introduced to her when I was trying to find ukulele chords to a Khalid song and found her cover on YouTube years ago. She makes awesome music and her voice has such a cruisy timbre to it so I was thrilled to have her jump on 'Queen' with me. She is also an avid croc lover and part of the LGBTQIA+ community, so obviously it just made sense!” mxmtoon adds, “So happy to be a part of ‘Queen’ with G! she and Rostam were such a joy to work with and so so much fun to collaborate with on creative as well. I’m so glad that it’s still possible to make art and music with someone even when they’re on the other side of the world, and I’m lucky that I got the opportunity to feature on G’s song. ‘Queen’ is a power anthem for any person, and I’m so excited for people to love it as much as we do!” [via DIY]

With her hotly-anticipated new album Magic Mirror out now, Pearl Charles gave us our latest teaser of what to expect earlier this week, sharing new glitzy bop ‘Only For Tonight’. “‘Only for Tonight’ tells the story of a currently bygone era of wild nights out on the town - the highs and lows of one night stands and the crashes of the morning after,” she explains. “The music video, directed by Bobbi Rich, leans into those excesses, paying a sparkly homage to the late-night musical television shows of the 70’s, from Soul Train to The Midnight Special, as well as the gauzy, Vaseline’d lens of ABBA’s music videos. With an added sprinkling of VHS special effects, you’re likely to feel like you’re watching a home-taped recording of a lost episode of Top of the Pops.” [via DIY]

Alt-pop trailblazer dodie has shared her new single 'Hate Myself' in full. Everything the songwriter touches seems to turn into melodic gold, with her debut album Build A Problem landing this Spring. Out on March 5, it's led by new single 'Hate Myself', which made its bow as Annie Mac's Hottest Record In The World. It's an apt title, with this instantly-viral moment offering an "inner monologue" that touches on some of dodie's inner-most feelings. The song depicts "someone who seems to find themselves in relationships of any kind with people who deal with their feelings internally - unfortunately resulting in assuming the issue is with them." dodie co-directed the video alongside Sammy Paul, shooting at the Cornish seaside village Polperro. The pair "excitedly landed on the silly idea of the training leading up to becoming a post-lady, and thoroughly enjoyed planning the many bizarre exercises she would have to perfect. Our excellent Art Director, Louis Grant, worked on bringing her home and training station to life. Though jogging on cliff tops in the rain, carrying a large sack and slipping in the mud was certainly cold and exhausting, I think I preferred it to slowly feeling sicker, licking stamps on a swaying boat by the Excel." Berlin-based indie five-piece People Club are back with new single and video 'Francine', following on from their last release 'Lay Down Your Weapons', which focused on police brutality.  The new single 'Francine' tackles the topics of addiction and lovelessness. In the words of the band: "The song speaks from the voice of a lamenting partner whose lover (Francine) is helplessly addicted to drugs. Francine lost interest in her relationship with the narrator a long time ago. It's a song about commitment and how love can fade away leaving only wickedness behind."  Regarding the visuals, the band said "The 'Francine' video is a play on the old idiom of 'being your own worst enemy'. A phrase which quite beautifully captures the inner critic which we know so well, especially during the course of the pandemic - we've had to learn to each give ourselves a break. The video was shot in the depth of the harsh Berlin winter, in the depth of the pandemic." Director Felix Spitta added "I love the band and I love the different personalities. It is always heaps of fun working on creative output together. Riding through Berlin only with bikes and all the film equipment in the freezing cold almost felt like a masochistic idea from Saxon. It's inspiring to be surrounded by so many creative minds.”

Pale Waves are back with 'Easy', the third single to be shared from their highly-anticipated second album Who Am I?. Lead vocalist Heather Baron-Gracie describes the new track as "a song about how love can change your whole entire perspective on life itself. It’s saying ‘being in love with you is so easy, you finally make sense in my life because nothing did before'." The new single is accompanied by a James Slater-directed video that shows Baron-Gracie performing at a Tim Burton/medieval-style wedding in an abandoned church. Baron-Gracie adds, "I wore a wedding dress throughout and we shot the video in an old abandoned church. I’m really inspired by the gothic medieval aesthetic and at the time I was thinking of the video I was watching a lot of Tim Burton films whose creativity really inspires me." Pale Waves' second album will follow their 2018 debut LP My Mind Makes Noises. Baron-Gracie says of their upcoming album, "For me, music and art is for people not to feel so alone and isolated. I want to be that person my fans look up to and find comfort in." [via the Line Of Best Fit]

The official video for Zoe Wees’ new single, 'Girls Like Us,' is online now. Like the song, the clip sends a message of togetherness and solidarity to girls around the world who are feeling the pressures of society. Zoe Wees says, “It’s not always good to think about how you look to the rest of the world. It’s much more important to think about how you feel inside. It is not easy to call yourself beautiful but being confident helps you to accept and love yourself.” The 18-year-old Hamburg, Germany-based artist adds, “We’re walking through a world with blinded eyes. At the end of the day, we all go to bed without make-up with the ugliest clothes and wake up with the messiest hair on earth.”

Julien Baker has shared a new taste of her forthcoming album Little Oblivions by way of a new single ‘Hardline’. Julien says, “A few years ago I started collecting travel ephemera again with a loose idea of making a piece of art with it. I had been touring pretty consistently since 2015 and had been traveling so much that items like plane tickets and hotel keycards didn't have much novelty anymore. So I saved all my travel stuff and made a little collage of a house and a van out of it. I wanted to incorporate it into the record and when we were brainstorming ideas for videos we came across Joe Baughman and really liked his work so we reached out with the idea of making a stop-motion video that had similar aesthetic qualities as the house I built did. I don't know why I have the impulse to write songs or make tiny sculptures out of plane tickets. But here it is anyway: a bunch of things I've collected and carried with me that I've re-organized into a new shape.” The video for ‘Hardline’ was directed by Joe Baughman, who notes: “Man, even after having spent 600 hours immersed in ‘Hardline’ and having listened to it thousands of times, I am still moved by it. It was a fun and ambitious challenge creating something that could accompany such a compelling song. The style of the set design, inspired by a sculpture that Julien created, was especially fun to work in. I loved sifting through magazines, maps, and newspapers from the 60s and 70s and finding the right colors, shapes, and quotes to cover almost every surface in the video.”

Teenage Joans are staying true to their world and unveiling 'Something About Being Sixteen', a new single that's sure to cement their 2021 as victorious. It's the perfect successor to 'Three Leaf Clover' and a track that makes it two-for-two for Teenage Joans, further capturing the excitement and energy within Cahli and Tahlia as they trade catchy riffs and thriving choruses with the combo of light-heartedness and intimateness that seems to define Teenage Joans' work, and how they're able to look in at themselves (and out at the world around them) through a lens that keeps it fun and digestable. "'Something About Being Sixteen' is undoubtedly Teenage Joans' great take on the classic coming of age rock tune, generally closing our live sets with audiences singing along every time without fail," the duo say on the single. Kate Hollowell took a risk going by the moniker Number One Popstar when she released her debut single 'Psycho.' However, Hollowell didn’t mind if that choice set her up for failure or not. She goes with the flow. Luckily, that mentality has advanced her even farther. Now, Number One Popstar releases her second single, 'I Hate Running.' New Year’s resolutions are, most of the times, created for the wrong reasons. It’s also no surprise that majority of people’s goals center around exercising and weight loss. 'I Hate Running', however, challenges that mindset, satirizing the toxic nature of exercise industry and diet culture. Hollowell said herself, “The song explores facing the hard, emotional work instead of the physical.  I really don’t enjoy running, and I wanted to troll the exercise industry and write an anti-motivational song.” In terms of sound, 'I Hate Running' shares similar vibes to her first single with its classic 80s pop of saturated synths. But, this time, there’s a hint of disco with the zealous psychedelic guitar and electric drums and keys. The interludes consist of a symbolic, robotic, and almost sinister snippet from a workout instructor. It all complements well with Hollowell’s escapist lyrics. Even though the lyrics say otherwise, the track’s sound might just spark that motivation to workout or dance, doing mindful movement that makes us feel good. Exercise should never feel like a punishment, and Number One Popstar is here to remind us. She makes us want to stick it to the exercise industry, proving to it that we will only work out for the right reasons. [via Earmilk]

Alt-pop riser Chloe Rodgers has shared her new video 'The Algea' in full. The Nottingham based talent sparkled in 2020 in spite of the pervasive gloom, releasing two startling singles. Her third release could be her best yet, with 'The Algea' hitting streaming services just before Christmas. The video captures those mid-winter chills, while providing a platform for Chloe to express herself. Constructed alongside creative director Kate Lomas, it was shot at Newstead Abbey in Nottingham. Chloe comments... "I wanted to use a music box in the video to represent being objectified and getting stuck in the same cycles, as that’s largely what the song is about. I wrote the song when I was 18, but didn’t add the verse at the end about claiming my power back until a couple of years later when I felt a bit stronger. We tried to reflect this in the video too with the Chloe in white sort of protecting the other Chloe of the past." Kate Lomas adds: "This was such a joy to watch come together, the video concept is based around the idea that Chloe is the character in a music box, she’s the performer that’s spinning round on an endless cycle for other people’s entertainment. The video tells the tale of Chloe definitely breaking this cycle and no longer playing this role." [via Clash]

Jaguar Jonze has announced her ANTIHERO EP will be released on April 16 via Nettwerk Records. With the EP announcement, Deena shares the official music video for her latest single, 'ASTRONAUT,' the follow-up to two previously released videos for 'DEADALIVE' and 'MURDER'. Each of the five music videos for the forthcoming ANTIHERO EP will come together through bold-palette videos that transform into an antihero character “in a cyberpunk, anime, futuristic, graphic, almost sci-fi world,” says Deena. Deena adds, “as ‘ASTRONAUT’ delves into my anxiety, I wanted the film to reflect that in a simple way that helped portray how my anxiety can sometimes manifest - a contradiction between feeling lost in vast spaces and trapped in claustrophobic spaces. I had a specific idea in mind, which meant that I had to undergo stunt training with professionals and learn how to maneuver in a wire harness. Most of the video had to be shot in a single take because of the stunts' nature in safety preparation, time consumption, and impact on the body. I'm still recovering from the bruises, but it was all worth it, and the team was amazing in pulling it all together. I'm proud of this one as it is 3 minutes of my rawest vulnerability, visually interpreted. I'm also finally ready to share it.” 'ASTRONAUT' is the sound of Deena liberating herself from a lifelong battle with anxiety.  “It is a human trait. It’s how we survive in the wild,” she says. “We’re all wired as humans to be quite anxious.  As females more so, because we’re more susceptible to danger.”

Rising star Mulay shares the smoking visuals for her new single, ‘Antracyte’. It’s the culminating release in a three-part video series from the Berlin-based alternative R&B singer-songwriter/producer/artist, ahead of her highly anticipated EP, which comes out at the end of the month via Groenland Records. Mulay explains about the single, “'ANTRACYTE' is the intro and title track to my debut EP. It’s the soundtrack to the birth of a villain and captures the moment of complete honesty to yourself about the awareness of doing wrong by the ones you love while feeling the inability to turn around. It’s about the desire to taste forbidden fruits, to cross and explore what lies beyond the line and the self-empowering feeling of playing by your own rules defeating the fear of consequences and the power of moral concepts. 'ANTRACYTE' tells a story of contradicting emotions, a story of love, lust, pain and a longing for more. It’s about facing your own darkness and sins, about self-revelation, emancipation and about paying its price, resigning to your fate.”

Only a band like shallow pools could make a blast of 'ice water' sound refreshing and necessary in the dead of New England winter. But the Massachusetts indie-pop group is usually pushing against the current of what we’d normally expect, and now the quartet hits us with a dose of cold reality through their new single and video. 'ice water' is a vivid new single that confronts the mental health struggles brought on by quarantine and isolation, and even the shallow pools aesthetic has reflected this by shifting from bright glowing neons to a more subdued color palette of beiges and browns. Call it a sign of the times, and call 'ice water' the sound of now; upbeat and jovial on the surface, a comet of pop smarts and hooks, but with the darker shine that resides in our lives when we’re positioned away from the screens and digital scenes. As Glynnis Brennan sings “Every day’s the same and / There’s no breaking out / Like I’m stuck here / Going through the motions now” well, we feel that. shallow pools describe “ice water” as “a departure from the music we’ve made in the past, but it’s the perfect bridge between our old and new sound.” That is certainly the case, and 'ice water' continues to showcase the group as one of New England’s sharpest, following a string of 2020 singles that included pop standouts like 'Haunted' and 'Afterlight'. “We wrote the song with our friend and producer, Chris Curran, and learned a lot about the type of music we want to be making in the process,” the band adds. “The song is about the impact that the state of the world has had on our mental health, specifically in the last year. We’re excited to share it and hope that anyone who has had similar experiences will find some comfort in knowing that there are others who can relate.” [via Vanyaland]

Lovely Hands
I have so many feelings for Laurel, so I wrote about her meeting Julien for the first time also based off that terrible comic I drew.
Pairs: Julien/MC (Laurel)
Pronouns: She/Her
CW: Swearing, mostly fluff, SFW
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It had been a long day. Asra left early in the morning for another trip, as they hugged goodbye he whispered sweet thoughts into Laurel's ear.
'Even apart we'll still be under the same moon.'
'You really liked that sparkly crystal I brought last time, I'll get you another in a different color, maybe two so we can keep them close.'
Laurel smiled into his shoulder before gently pulling away. They looked at each other for a long moment before she leaned over planting a kiss on each of his cheeks. 'Safe travels...'
With a flick of her wrist, a stream of pink magic settles over his form and he grabs her hand planting a light kiss to the palm, smiling into it. 'That spells always keeps the sea sickness at bay' he murmurs. She grins 'well yeah, you have never been good on ships, you always go green, just a little something to make traveling easier'
Asra smiles radiantly at her and gently releases her hand, his eyes flashing something Laurel can't quite read. He speaks softly 'Ill be back before you know it, don't forget me.' 'You know I never could' she murmurs back and watches his form walk away from her little shop.
They never spoke on feelings, Laurel didn't really think she deserved them. And besides Asra was always affectionate with people, his kisses for her we're no different than the ones he gave Auntie Ophelia. So instead she would watch him leave, aching in her chest.
The day had passed by quickly, with the spring season upon them, everyone needed their potions to help crops grow, keep allergies at bay or to find out if their new romance was the real deal.
As the sun set she helped Auntie Ophelia close the shop before the kind older woman yawned. 'Laurel I think it might be time for bed for me, these old bones aren't what they used to be'
'Do you need any help?' Ophelia waved her off, 'I'll be fine, you mentioned earlier we were running low on red flame ferns, my friend on the south end should have some, it's a beautiful evening, go enjoy it I'll be fine'
Laurel adjusts her hip bag before she feels Ophelia's open the pouch, placing coins in it. "There's some extra there, grab some dinner for yourself, also put this on.' She wraps a long scarf around her neck several times. Laurel scowls 'its too warm for this Ophelia.'
'Nonsense' the older woman quips and pat's her arm, 'Off you go, don't be out too late.'
Laurel signs as she is gently pushed out the door and places a cross-me-not spell over the door.
The streets are quiet, couples milling about, the marketplace a glow with lanterns in all kinds of colors. The baker is closed for the day. 'Ugh I'd love some pumpkin bread' Laurel thinks to herself 'I'll wake up early tomorrow and get some.' But continues on her path to the South end of Vesuvia.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
She's been on the South end plenty of times. Her boots scuff against the cobblestones as her thoughts drift to Asra, wondering how the trip has gone so far, hoping he's eaten enough, wondering if he's staring up at the moon too.
Her thoughts are interrupted by loud laughter, she sees bight lights on a side street, and a delicious scent wafting in the evening breeze. Her belly rumbles and she decides that now might be the best time to eat.
Pausing at the door she reads the sign over it 'The Rowdy Raven' she smirks a little at the name, cute.
She notices a raven on a nest nearby and reaches into her pocket, she always keeps treats for Vesuvias animals and places a few berries in the nest, gently stroking the soft feathers of it's back before making her way into the bar.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Inside is warm, the smell of beer is strong. Scanning for a seat, she notices a few open spots at the bar and makes her way over, pulling off her scarf. As she untangles it from her form she accidentally bumps into something, or rather someone. She jumps back, eyes wide. 'Oh no I'm so sorry, are you okay?'
The person in question laughs gently, curly auburn hair falls over one of his eyes and he smirks wide 'No harm done my dear, I shouldn't have gotten in the way of a woman on a mission.'
Laurel turns to the side to let him through, but he doesn't pass her, instead his steely grey gaze roams her face before settling on her lips and then back up to her eyes.
Her pulse quickens ever so slightly, though her expression remains neutral. Suddenly he shakes his head and walks away, dark boots clicking as he makes his way to a far table with several other men.
She scurries to a far stool at the bar and orders dinner and some sort of fruity alcoholic concoction. She doesn't know what it is, but it's sweet and bubbly on her tounge. Unknown to her, from across the room, the man from before watches her.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Making his way to the table with 4 steins of Salty Bitters, he passes the drinks to his companions.
'Aye mate, who is she? some long lost lover from your torrid affairs overseas?' Julien flushes under the question 'I've actually never seen her before in my life, but.....' he peeks over his shoulder at Laurel, she's pulled out a small pad of paper, scrawling over it, her cheek smooshed in one hand, rings glittering in the candlelight as she doodles.
'Dont get your hopes up, look at her face, she's got bitch written all over it, she'll grind you up my friend and probably use you for a spell or something.'
Julien bristles, he's never been a fan of the term bitch, but beyond that, when she bumped into him, the concern in her voice was real, she didn't brush him off or get angry. When he looked in her eyes, they were almost unreadable, but he saw a flash of insecurity as he looked at her.
Julien decides that maybe he could get a win-win senerio, steepling his fingers, his eyes glimmer with mischief. 'Let's wager then, my drinks for the night are on you if I get her to dance with me, also her meal. If I lose I pay for drinks'
The three howl before the blonde man across from him sticks out his hand to shake on the wager 'You'll be scrubbing dishes to pay off tonight mate!'
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Laurel tenses when she feels someone slide into the stool next to her, she's on her third drink of the night, her curry dinner completely gone.
She turns her head slightly realizing it's the man from before. He motions for the barkeep and whispers to him before he turns more fully to face her. His jacket is off, his white shirt unbuttoned revealing a defined expanse of chest, light red hairs, his sleeves rolled to the elbows.
He smiles at her and offers a hand 'I don't think I caught your name before.' She eyes him warily before turning away 'because I didn't say my name before.'
His grin falters slightly and he drops his hand back to the bar 'and what does a guy gotta do to get on a named basis with you?'
She feels a blush crawling up her neck, she wills it away and closes her eyes before fixing him with an icy look. 'Do you want to die?'
His expression changes then, suddenly his confident air drops and he shifts a little closer blush creeping up his face and murmurs a few inches from her face 'Does that mean I'll get to feel your lovely hands around my neck?'
Her jaw drops, usually that worked wonders for getting over interested folks away from her. Instead he seems to enjoy the prospect of her hurting him. The blush covers her face and she sees his eyebrows raise slightly, he looks smug.
Bristling she sighs but she doesn't get a negative aura from him. If anything his aura is teasing and gentle. She fixes him with another look, downs the rest of her drink and mutters 'It's Laurel.....'
He smiles at that 'I'm Julien and I was hoping you might do me the kindness of a dance, just one and I'll leave you alone the rest of the night, heck I'll even pay for your meal and drinks.'
She eyes him, insecurity taking over, this feels like a trap, one she's been the target of far to many times. Some guy says cute things, she let's her guard down a little, turns out it was some big joke at her expense, she leaves disappointed and her resolve to keep everyone at bay grows even more.
She freezes when she feels a hand on her chin, turning her face to fully meet his gaze Julien's face is gentle 'One dance, no funny business, just, you look like you'd be a worthwhile dance partner, usually I have to dance with one of those idiots.'
Julien gestures over his shoulder at his companions, they all are watching with great interest and Laurel feels a blush in her face again. Ugh these drinks were not helping her keep a cold exterior.
Minutely Laurel nods, and gently takes Julien's gloved hand in hers, he smirks as he guides her to the center of the bar, there is no real dance floor but the jaunty tune from the band forces people to create space, a twirling collection of bodies and heat.
Julien is in fact a good dancer, his long legs might give the impression of a gangly colt, but his movements are as sure as a mountain goat on a sheer cliff face. Julien can't stop himself from grinning over her head at his companions, their jaws hanging, as he spins her through the steps.
As the song comes to a close he hooks one of her legs around his hip, dipping her as he supports her low back, he notices the long line of muscles in her neck and for a moment has to wrestle with the idea of burying his face there, tasting the salt of her skin.
As she stand up against him, his senses return and instead he become acutely aware of the woman in front of him, her chest presses firmly to his, her lips parted slightly as she takes a few heavy breathes, a few beads of sweat hang at her temple. Her palms are pressed to his bare chest and he feels himself flush under her gaze, his heart beat rapid. Gently she pulls away from him, bowing slightly. 'Thank you for the dance....' she then turns quickly grabbing her stuff from the bar and makes a hasty exit, face bright red all the way to her ears.
Julien is dumbstruck for a moment before he turns back to his friends, they all stare at him wide eyed. He absently traces where her hands had settled on his chest and he sighs, his head swimming with sensation. Her muscles under his hands as he guided the dance, the little noises she made under her breath as they moved. He leans on his elbows, and he chugs the last of his Salty Bitters before smirking at his companions, 'I believe I won the bet gentlemen, pay up'
Outside in the ally way, Laurel tries to calm her breathing, her heart is rushing a million miles a minute, and the cool air removes the heat from her skin. She leans against the wall, trying to steady her shaking legs before she hears Julien's voice 'I won the bet, pay up'
Her heart sinks, once again she was the butt of a joke and anger wells up in her chest before her walls come back up.
It's late she realizes, too late to get the red flame ferns from Ophelia's friend so Laurel makes a slow walk back to the shop, she decides to get up early tomorrow, get the ferns and pumpkin bread for her and Ophelia for breakfast.
Unbeknownst to her, Julien peers down the street, he watches her leave. He notices how the moonlight shines off her short hair and watches her hips sway as he feels a deep sense of longing.
'Next time...next time I'll definitely touch her head.....'
Looking back at Scale By the Bay 2018
By Salar Rahmanian
The 2019 CFP opens on May 1st and ends on May 31st at http://scale.bythebay.io .  Submit your best talk early and meet us by the bay in November!
One of the highlights of 2018 was attending and being part of the Scale By the bay 2018 conference in San Francisco. This by far was the best conference I have ever attended.
Tumblr media
From left: Dick Wall, Salar Rahmanian, Martin Odersky (Creator of Scala), Alexy Khrabrov, Jakob Odersky
The conference had 3 tracks covering the functional programming, reactive programming and data science topics. All the talks were of high quality made even better by highly intelligent audience made up of the most talented stars of our industry.
Keynotes
Tumblr media
New Functional Constructs in Scala 3 by Martin Odersky (Creator of Scala)
The first keynote was by the creator of Scala Programming language. He took us through some of the new constructs we are likely to see in the upcoming major release of Scala3. Overall the audience was very excited about the new constructs and what is coming up. There were a few people I had talked to at the conference who had concerns that we are heading for another python2 -> python3 situation causing a split in the community and some hesitation in desire to upgrade as there will be some breaking changes.
I personally am excited about the new features coming out and am optimistic about the success of the new version. In addition there will be new tooling the scala center is working on that will help with migrating to the new version. Let’s not forget Scala is strongly typed which will help a lot with the migration unlike languages like Python.
youtube
Kafka and the Rise of the event driven Microservices by Neha Narkhede (Co-creator of Apache Kafka)
This keynote started off by asking the audience who uses Kafka in Production today. It was fascinating to see that 95% of the audience were which is a huge endorsement of Kafka.
One of the initial and primary use cases for using Kafka has been to build data pipelines, this keynote focused on the next evolution of Kafka where it is used to build event driven applications and microservices. The standard mindset has been to design and implement your apps based around static data, Kafka helps us design apps based around continuely streaming data.
This new paradigm will allow us to take data from your applications and data from your data systems like databases and do stream processing on them to produce.
youtube
Concurrency and more concurrency
There was a common theme at this years conference, multiple talks about libraries and patterns to make concurrency and parallel processing easier and over coming the pain points associated with it.
Jakob Odesky talk summarized the concurrency options available to you within Scala Language and the JVM such as threads, Futures and Promises. He then went on to talk about Scala Center ’s scala-async library which has lead him to his new open source project escale which is built on top of scala-async. This new library, escale, introduces the same concept as channels and green threads that was introduced by the go programming language for scala. I look forward to seeing how this evolves.
youtube
Michael Pilquist gave us a nice update on cats-effect took us through an overview of some of the features it has to solve concurrency problems. There was lot of content in his talk for me to summarize in this post so I urge you to watch the video of his talk.
youtube
My favorite talk of the conference was a talk by Sergei Winitzki on Declarative distributed concurrency in Scala where he talk about his open source project Chymyst which implements the chemical machine (based on joint calculus). The philosophy and end goal of the chemical machine is to be able to process what ever problem you are trying to solve in 15 lines or less of code. Containers holding values are known as molecules. Molecules float around the site until they combine to form a chemical reaction the output of which can be used again. In his implementation partial functions where used to implement the reactions. I loved the analogy to chemistry and Sergei’s presentation really explained the concept well to spark my interest in this. Since his talk I have researched the topic of chemical machines and I could only find research papers on the topic and none of them do as good a job in explaining what it is as the talk did so I urge you to watch the video.
Cemetery was the right vibe for a glamour goth wedding
Grossan, a music aficionado, and the rock musician Ayers, who has jazz in his blood, aren’t the “wedding factory” types. (Elizabeth Lippman/The New York Times)
Just months after they started dating more than two years ago, Ally Jane Grossan and Nabil Ayers felt certain they were headed for marriage, and it was with as much surety that they didn’t want their wedding to feel formulaic and familiar.
“We wanted to get married somewhere that’s isn’t a wedding factory,” said Grossan, a founder of Brooklyn FI, a financial planning firm geared to creatives and tech entrepreneurs in New York. “It’s always the same: a beautiful space, flowers and salmon or chicken, and we just wanted to do something that wasn’t that.”
By many markers, the couple’s evening wedding on Thursday, Dec. 20, in the Masonic Lodge at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery could not be typecast. There was DJ Gregg Foreman — lithe former music director for the musician Cat Power with Joan Jett hair — who played songs by the Cure on the piano. There was the bride’s walk down the aisle with her parents, to the cascading drumbeats of the eerie first bars of “Atmosphere” by post-punk band Joy Division. There was the irrevocable fact that several yards away, entertainment industry legacies — from Mickey Rooney to Johnny Ramone — lay deceased.
“I don’t know why, I’ve always loved cemeteries,” said Grossan, 30. “Père Lachaise in Paris is one of my favorite places; Green-Wood in Brooklyn. I don’t think they’re morbid. I think they’re beautiful.” Ayers, 46, agreed: “It’s like a beautiful park.”
It was at another wedding reception in June 2016 at House of Yes, an events space in Bushwick, Brooklyn, where Ayers first spotted Grossan. “I remember thinking, who is that beautiful woman standing there?” he said. The two were in attendance to celebrate the marriage of respective co-workers: Anna Bond, with whom Ayers worked at 4AD, an independent record label where he is the US label manager, and the groom, J Edward Keyes, who was Grossan’s then-boss at Bandcamp, a self-publishing music platform where she was a senior editor.
Ayers waited to make his move until he saw Grossan chatting with Joan LeMay, a friend from Seattle, where from 1997 to 2008, he ran Sonic Boom Records and was a drummer in indie rock bands like the Long Winters. Ayers greeted his friend, who introduced him to Grossan. “My first impression was that he was wearing this fabulous suit with cool glasses,” she said of Ayers’ signature oversize frames.
The pair spoke for a few minutes before rejoining the party, and then found each other again, talking for an hour against the backdrop of karaoke. They spoke about music. At 24, Grossan had been appointed the series editor of the publisher Bloomsbury’s 33-1/3 Series, a collection of biographies about individual music albums and artists. “I, and anyone else who had ever heard about it, was impressed by that,” Ayers said.
Ayers is the son of noted jazz composer and vibraphonist Roy Ayers, with whom he has had a distant relationship. He was given a drum set at age 2 by his uncle, jazz musician Alan Braufman, and has made music his lifeblood since.
“I remember someone telling me that night: ‘Oh that’s Nabil Ayers from 4AD, that guy’s a big shot,’” Grossan said. After the two parted ways, Grossan followed Ayers on Twitter in the Uber ride back to her home in Crown Heights, Brooklyn.
The next day, Ayers reached out to LeMay with a request: Could she ask Grossan to pass along her email address? Once in hand, Ayers sent Grossan a casual message mentioning Skee-Ball, which Grossan had revealed was a talent. Two days later, Ayers was surprised he hadn’t heard back. “I thought it was weird. We’d gotten along well, and my friend had asked her if it was OK to get in touch.”
After giving the go-ahead, Grossan thought it was odd that she hadn’t heard from Ayers. “I checked the spam folder and was like, ‘No way, this doesn’t happen.’” There was Ayers’s email from his 4AD address.
Grossan responded immediately and the two made plans to meet the following Sunday for a drink. On the Thursday evening beforehand, however, Grossan was seated at a table in the Hammerstein Ballroom at the Libera Awards — a ceremony honoring the indie music community — and heard Ayers’ name announced. She looked up to see him walking on stage to accept an award on behalf of singer/songwriter Grimes for the video “Kill V. Maim.” Grossan emailed him: “Short and sweet — great speech.”
They found each other after the program and Grossan invited Ayers to join a group heading to a karaoke bar (note: for how much karaoke appears in this story, the groom does not particularly enjoy it). There, jammed into a bench with industry peers, Ayers was enchanted as Grossan sang the grim, rapid fire lyrics to System of a Down’s “Chop Suey” with perfect elocution. “She took her shoes off for the song, and I was like, ‘Whoa, she’s really going to do it,’” Ayers said. “I was really impressed.”
The group dispersed and Grossan and Ayers wound up at New Wonjo in Koreatown, talking over cold noodles late into the night. That night the couple kissed for the first time.
It would be the first of many dates.
“Most of the men in the music journalism space are obnoxious: They’re proud of knowing the names of every single album,” Grossan said. “But Nabil knows more that everyone and is so understated. He never tries to display his knowledge to anyone. He’s just excited to talk about it.”
Like the tongue-twisting lyrics to Chop Suey, the relationship moved at a heady clip. On an early date, Grossan mentioned that her favorite album was Hole’s Celebrity Skin; several weeks later, on her birthday in July, Ayers gave her a copy in vinyl. That month, the pair decided on impulse that Grossan would be Ayers’ date to a September wedding in Paris. And in October, Ayers met Grossan’s father, television producer Mark Grossan, in a hot tub during Orange County’s Beach Goth music festival. By Christmas, they had plans for Ally Jane Grossan to move into Ayers’ Brooklyn Heights apartment when her lease was up in May.
In early 2018, Ayers began looking for rings to propose to Grossan. Once he found one — a vintage emerald-cut diamond with two baguettes that reminded him of the art deco angles of the Chrysler Building — he put his plan in motion. He had arranged to have Julien Baker, Grossan’s favorite musician, perform a private serenade during the Sasquatch Music Festival in George, Washington, on May 25, 2018.
But the couple was running late that day. Grossan got her first speeding ticket while they were en route to the Gorge Ampitheater from Seattle. She was frazzled as Ayers hurried her through security, texting with Baker’s manager about the mere minutes they had before the musician was due on stage. Telling Grossan they were hurrying to meet a friend at a backstage video shoot, Ayers wove them through the 20,000-person crowd, past the tour buses, and around a bend behind the stage. There, they found Baker and her violinist on a cliff overlooking the gorge. She started playing Love Me Tender by Elvis. When the violin solo began, Ayers dropped to one knee and asked Grossan to marry him.
The couple chose to marry in Los Angeles, where Grossan grew up and where her grandparents, Murray and Rosalyn Grossan, 95 and 94, live. (They were unable, however, to attend the wedding). Ayers had recently organised a show at the Hollywood Cemetery and thought it might dually be suitable for matrimony. On the summer day when Grossan and her mother toured the cemetery for a visit, the staff was cleaning up the site of the memorial for Chris Cornell, Soundgarden’s frontman.
On the evening of December 20, however, morbidity was the last thing on the minds of the 125 friends and family who gathered in the temple of Masonic Lodge in festive interpretations of “glamour goth,” the couple’s suggested attire for guests. This meant oversize earrings, peacock feathers, sparkly slides, tattooed fingers, faux fur and evening gowns, with an over-index of black rimmed glasses paired with long rocker hair.
“Each of you are glowing tonight, and the love of life that you are share with each other helps to light this world around us,” said the officiant, Rabbi Michele Ellise Lenke, under a white huppah in the temple room, which was a vision in crimson, from carpet to walls, with a Masonic Eastern Star hanging in the center. “Julien Baker may sing about turning the lights out,” the rabbi said, “but my wish for you is to keep shining bright.”
In his vows, Ayers spoke of his respect for Grossan’s drive and ambition, and called her his motivation in life. “I’ve always been a happy person,” he said. “It’s become clear to me that you’ve always been a happy person. So it’s hard to believe that I would meet someone who has made me infinitely happier, but you’ve done that.”
Grossan, who is taking her husband’s last name, praised his accomplishments and his “infectious warmth.” “Waiters, bartenders, shopkeepers and strangers we meet are immediately drawn to you,” she said. “It’s like the whole world is completely in love with you, but not as much as me. I vow to protect and cherish that feeling.”
In toasts over dinner in the building’s Eastern Star Room, where guests drank sparkling Topo Chico water, natural libations from Silverlake’s Psychic Wines, and ate a Mediterranean buffet feast, Ayers was referred to by a co-worker, Gabe Spierer, as “the nicest guy in rock.”
(“Not only rock, but one of the nicest guys in earth, wind and water,” Matt Berninger, the frontman for the rock band the National amended later in the evening).
Ayers’ mother Louise Vesper, a former ballet dancer, recalled seeing the body language between the couple for the first time, and praised the fact that “in their busy lives, they still make time for their parents.” The party moved back across the hall to the Masonic Temple for dancing, and then onto an after party at Brass Monkey — for karaoke, of course.
PROMPT - Julien X Masc, Grumpy reader! - Christmas Tree Problems
Tumblr media
“It's not my fault you're vertically challenged.”
“what did you just say?”
“you heard me” you leaned against the doorframe to the living, arms crossed with a small smirk on your face.
“then you need to stop buying trees that are tall as fuck- have come compassion for the short ones huh? not everyone is as tall as you” julien huffed in fake offence. she glared at the top of the christmas tree, angel ornament in her hand.
“nah” you leaned off the doorframe, walking into the couch, plopping yourself down. “i like seeing you suffer”
“well isn’t that nice?” julien rolled her eyes, stretching up onto her tippy toes as she reached her arm out. “are you seriously going to sit there and watch me struggle?”
“you’re the one who said you can decorate the tree. i said fine by me. so i’m sticking to your word babe” you kicked your feet up onto the chair, glancing at the colourful lit up tree.
“i can’t believe i’m fucking doing this” you raised an eyebrow, watching julien walk out of the room. coming back a few minutes later with the step ladders. you couldn’t stop the wheeze that escaped your mouth, wiping away small tears.
“stop laughing! it had to be done” even julien couldn’t stop the small smile from
appearing on her face.
“well it’s not my fault. i was given strict instructions to get a big and nice christmas tree for this house. how was i supposed to know it was seven foot and you’re only five foot?”
“BECAUSE IF ITS TALLER THAN YOU, THEN ITS DEFINITELY BIG” julien raised her voice, arms flying as she climbed up the stairs. you signed, lifting yourself up from the couch, holding onto the ladder, making sure julien didn’t fall.
“oh quiet down little one. don’t get too angry you’ll fall into the goddamn tree” you rolled your eyes, smirking when julien gave you a glare
“call me little one and i’m throwing this angel in your face”
