Finished "Feng Yun Di Yi Dao" or Sentimental Swordsman, Ruthless Sword by Gu Long.

I LOVED IT. It had the prerequisite amount of sex and randomness and ironic humor like all of Gu Long's stories. I found it easier to read than Jue Dai Shuang Jiao, which is one of my top 3 wuxia novels. The plot was more straightforward. Li Xunhuan and his little flying dagger were super fun to read about and I didn't even mind how long Ah Fei's obsession played out.

Glad I took a break from Qie Shi Tian Xia to read this. It's much better written and the translation was far superior as well.

Now I'm off to watch the movie from 1977. It's apparently a classic.

DW Potential Additions Tier List

So I made some spreadsheets but decided I was putting in too much work so here’s a quick summary.

I was grading on a scale of 1-5. 1 was characters I really don’t htink would add anything good, but who I thought some might suggest (like Cao Zhi, Jia Nanfeng, Pan Zhang, Zhao Guang, Zhang Ren, etc.) 2 is people who could maybe work under very specific circumstances, like a big narrative shift or a lot of related characters being added, or who might be fine but aren’t nearly as good as some other options (like Cheng Yu, Cao Xi, Wu Jing, Mi Zhu, or Gao Gan). These don’t really make the cut for discussion, so if you don’t see a name you’re expecting, I probably put them in one of those tiers for some reason.

Tier 3 are characters who would be fine. Just fine. They either did enough to make themselves noteworthy, or have enough of a connecting to existing narrative and cast that they’d probably add something worthwhile. Not the ones I’d be most excited about, but the ones I couldn’t make too many complaints over.

Tier 4 are great adds. Characters I really want to see, who could really expand the cast in worthwhile ways.

Tier 5 are characters I forget aren’t in these games already because why are they not here?

I’m not going to explain every decision here because I’m sure there will be followup questions. Yes, I’m aware that Jin is overrepresented, because it’s the smallest of the main factions.

Checked out a bit more Handsome Siblings/Peerless Twins/ Jue Dai Shuang Jiao, and it’s ok. Some of the casting choices are cool, others are kind of baffling. 

I think it’s a neat idea for younger actors to play Xiao Yu’er and Hua Wuque, they’re supposed to be 18 in the book and it works great :) In the 2004 version, these two were played by actors (Nic tse and Dicky Cheung) in their mid twenties and thirties (but they were so great I’ll give it a pass). So 2020 Xiao Yu’er and Hua Wuque, being actually young, give off completely different vibes. Now Hua Wuque is portrayed as a really hyper-talented but extremely sheltered, privately tutored rich kid who’d grown up under the thumb of not one, but Two extreme tiger mothers. He’s good at literally everything except being himself. Super shelteredly naive. Xiao Yu’er seems a lot less sure of himself (than 04 version, who was king), despite being his usual joking prankster. An insecure wild childe who’s feral tendencies was encouraged by his loving but equally feral adopted family. 

Both Hua Wuque and Xiao Yu’er are really immature and emotional and lash out and come up with the most stupid, unironic plans -- except one thinks they’re Smart™ and one thinks they’re Honourable™ -- and all of this is believable because this time they have an actually 18 yo looking face. The parents and guardians of these two are prominent characters and it all makes sense there. 

However, the casting choices for the Yihua Palace Princesses is killing me. The two princesses are supposed to be Hua Wuque’s adoptive guardians who took him in when he was a baby. Yet the actresses casted are in their twenties as well? They look the same age as Hua Wuque?? It really really takes you out of the story when Wuque is like “Aunties” but THEY’RE THE SAME AGE. (The mere presence of 2004 Princesses was insane, 2020 version flopped in this aspect. You could really believe 2004 Nic Tse was utterly at these two women’s mercy, like they owned him.) The 20 year old Princesses are really miscast imo, they don’t have the effortless power and command because they are quite awkwardly, far too young for the roles. You absolutely NEED older actors to play these roles. Otherwise it just makes no sense.
