The Legacy of Evil
I might redraw these again. Anyways these are concept symbols for the Burromuerto family.
Each of them represent a certain type of deadly sin. Alejandro’s presenting wrath, José presenting pride, and Carlos envy. Mr. Burromuerto is pure evil which is why his is purple, the root of all evil.

you've made the mistake of endorsing my josé redemption arc so i shall release the horrors within
because i like to think that josé, to some extent, in the back of his mind always felt bad about hurting alejandro. yeah, he thought it was necessary to get him to man up and for alejandro's own good in the long run, hell he even enjoyed taking his frustration out on someone else sometimes. but you don't press lit cigarettes into your little brother's skin and just not care. you don't have someone looking at you with hate and fear and exhaustion in their expression every day and not feel anything. you don't hurt someone day after day and remain oblivious to what it does to them
and maybe years down the line, after a lot of therapy and a long and ongoing process of healing, josé will look at the tiny circular scars on alejandro's arm and feel this... pit in his stomach. something heavy and cold that claws at his insides and makes him nauseous, it clogs up his throat and makes him want to look away. it's the same feeling he gets whenever he sees the relief on alejandro's face when josé doesn't turn something into a competition between them, or when he tenses up at being called "al", and so on
it's so different from the warmth he feels deep in his chest whenever alejandro laughs at something he says, loud and unburdened and giddy, whenever he lets josé see him weak and in pain without trying to cover everything up, whenever he shows the tiniest bit of trust in his older brother
being part of alejandro's life means he has to put up with that annoying twig boyfriend of his, who seems dead set on antagonizing josé with snarky comments and long, hard stares that seem to burn the side of his face. but the effect is lessened whenever alejandro comes to his defense with an easy smile and a "he's not so bad, come on, stop being mean". it also means he has to deal with the lovey-dovey looks exchange between the two of them, which, eugh. but fine, whatever, he can handle it
he still fucks up sometimes, of course he does, they both do. they step on toes and revert back to old habits and hurt each other and pull away. sometimes it feels like it's an uphill battle of three steps forward, two steps back. it's painful, it's messy and it's a long, long process. but they're burromuerto men, which means they're stubborn beyond reason and the very thought of giving up is appalling to them
one time josé goes over to alejandro's and noah's apartment when the little bastard is at work. they're supposed to hang out, just the two of them, watch some cheesy telenovelas and poke fun at the acting, predict the plot 30 minutes in, and get way too invested in the characters' relationships. which is why he's confused to find the apartment silent and empty, no sign of life in the living room or kitchen. he knows alejandro's home, his shoes are at there under the hangers and the door was unlocked, so where is he? he calls out his name as he makes his way towards his bedroom, knocking on the door and waiting for a reply. still nothing. he pushes the door open cautiously and feels his heart drop to his stomach
he recalls both carlos and alejandro mentioning something about "bad days" offhandedly, but neither of them seemed particularly interested in talking about it in more detail, and so josé never bothered asking either. and now he can only assume this is what they meant, because to him this seems pretty fucking bad. alejandro's in his bed, blanket pooled around his hips, a layer of sweat covering his entire body, hair messy. one of his hands is gripping the sheets next to his thigh, knuckles white from the effort, while the other one is pressed to his forehead, obscuring his eyes from sight. he's shaking, jaw clenched tight and in the silence josé can hear how ragged and uneven his breathing is.
he can only stand and stare for another moment, before he calls out alejandro's name again, quiet and more uncertain than he's felt in a long time. alejandro startles at josé's voice, tensing up, before lifting his hand away from his face enough to look at josé. his eyes are bloodshot and filled with tears, exhausted and pained and utterly miserable, and josé doesn't know what to do
later on he's sitting on the edge of alejandro's bed, one of his hands caught in a death grip so tight he swears he can hear his bones creaking, his other hand wound around alejandro's shoulder and buried in tangled, sweaty hair. alejandro has his forehead pressed to josé's shoulder, his entire frame trembling like a leaf, breathing a mix of sniffles and gasps under the weight of his sobs, his hand clutching at josé's back so hard josé can feel his nails digging in.
and it's sat like this, holding alejandro, lightly scratching at his scalp, desperately trying not to fuck this up, that he realizes he doesn't want to see his little brother in pain anymore. fuck what the doctors say, or what his father or the rest of the family will think. this is his hermanito, and josé cannot stand seeing him in pain, not anymore
holy fuck anon just send me to an early grave why dont you UROGUGHGT *psychic damage* *psychic damage* *psychic damage*
yeah so this is EXACTLY what i had in mind with their relationship. you nailed it. it's on the damn cross. i dont even know what to say other than holy shit, you get exactly what i was putting down. AND THEN YOU RAN WITH IT. you dropped this bomb ass mini fic into my inbox and just. HOW DO YOU EXPECT ME TO RESPOND?? my jaw is between my feet.
we stan the burromuerto brothers redemption and healing arc WE STAN IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BURROMUERTO BROTHER SUPREMACY!!!!!

you've given me all the validation i need, and so i am coming out of the woodworks to further spread my josé redemption arc propaganda
because to josé it's one thing to see his little brother open and vulnerable, and choose not to use that to hurt him. it's one thing to try and offer whatever comfort he can, put those people skills to use and figure out how to best help his little brother. it's one thing to be trusted and looked to for stability when in crisis
it's an entirely different thing to be vulnerable, to be offered comfort, to trust. that's the hard part. that's what's terrifying
josé can feel the cold heaviness on his chest from the moment he opens his eyes. it's a phenomenon he's dealt with for years and years now, this churning tightness in his chest, urging him to look away from people's eyes, to hunch his shoulders, to stay where he is and just curl up in bed. it doesn't pop up very often, only a couple of times a year and it's only lasts for about a day or two at max. this somehow feels worse than all the other times
of course josé never listened to it. he's a burromuerto, he's not about to be defeated by some silly, fleeting sentiment. it doesn't matter how much the thought of having to talk to others, having to represent his and his family's value makes him want to hide away in his room and never come out. he's the perfect son, he's not weak. he worked hard to be where he is, to have the reputation he has now, he's not about to ruin it with some cheap excuse for laziness and moping
and just like every other time he's felt like this, josé ignores it and gets on with his routine. he's meant to meet up with alejandro in about 20 minutes, they are to go to the mall and hang out for some time, then head back to his apartment to catch the first airing of some new tv drama they're making their next target, easy as that
he could call it off, something treacherous and pathetic whines in the back of his mind. he could make up some excuse about being sick and he could just get back in bed
he shuts that thought off quickly. no. absolutely no way. he's not some weak pansy. he's josé burromuerto, he's not about to wuss out of something because of some shameful little pressure in the back of his throat. he's ignored it just fine every other time, went about charming people and talking to them as he's meant to, perfect and confident and unshakeable. he can do it again
he makes sure his grin looks real when he greets alejandro, makes sure his voice is strong and his shoulders set as he talks, makes sure he's every bit the man he prides himself on being, makes sure to hide every bit of that disgusting weakness inside of him. he does not falter. he does not fail. he cannot
he keeps the act up all the way back to his apartment, walking a step ahead of alejandro, barely pausing to kick his shoes off before stepping deeper into the livingroom, still talking animatedly, voice steady and posture perfect. he makes sure every part of him is presentable and flawless. anything less is unacceptable
he only falters when alejandro calls his name suddenly, cutting him off mid sentence. josé turns to look at him and sees him standing at the threshold of the room, something...uncertain in his expression. he walks closer to josé, peering at his face with enough intensity to make josé want to avert his eyes. he doesn't
alejandro continues before josé can respond. "you seem off today," he says, concerned gaze searching for something josé desperately hopes he cannot find. "are you okay?"
josé can only blink at the question. he blinks again. and then again. and he keeps blinking, trying to get rid of the heaviness, the burning in his eyes. he opens his mouth to respond and his voice catches at the first syllable, stuck behind something heavy in his throat. he's tearing up, josé realizes to his own horror. he's crying
he snaps his gaze away, hoping to keep at least some of his dignity intact, mind racing for a way out of this situation. he forces a laugh, hopes alejandro can't hear how wet it is, makes some snarky remark about alejandro's eyesight and tries to rapidly bite back the urge to snap and lash out. don't make a scene don't make a scene you can't you can't stop no no no--
he flinches when something touches the back of his head, eyes cutting back to focus on alejandro again. his face is twisted with something vile and pitiful, and josé doesn't need anyone's pity, least of all alejandro's-
but before he can make out the words, the hand on the nape of his neck pulls him forward and straight into alejandro. he's left wide eyed as his face presses into alejandro's shoulder, his head tilted down an inch to accommodate for their height difference. he doesn't move a muscle as alejandro collapses his cane and tucks it away, his now free hand coming to wrap around josé shoulders
"you don't have to pretend, hermano," he says softly, "not with me." and josé-- josé feels something inside him, something that's been stretched thin to it's limit and then some, worn and ragged from overuse, finally rip apart. it's not an explosive, violent thing. it doesn't snap to strike at anyone in range, simply falls apart now that the pressure is gone, tired and done
and josé's vision grows cloudy as tears fill his eyes and flow down his cheeks, he feels his face contort and his brow draw together in misery. his shoulders begin shaking as he curls inward, his breathing grows ragged and uneven, and in the end he can't resist the urge to close his eyes tight and tilt his head to hide against alejandro's shoulder. his hands come up to clutch at alejandro's shirt and in response he feels the arms around him tighten, pulling him firmly against a solid body
and they stay like that, josé doesn't even know for how long, in the middle of his livingroom, crowded in each other's space, josé with his face tucked into alejandro's shoulder, sobs he hasn't let loose in long, long years shaking his entire frame as he gasps around the clump in his throat. all the while alejandro keeps a strong hold of him, rubbing at the short hair on the back of his head and occasionally murmuring words that josé only half catches. they stay like that, alejandro holding him together while he breaks apart in his arms
sorry if this was a bit too out of character, i just felt like josé should be given a chance to have a miserable day where all it takes is one person asking you if you're okay for you to break down. and at one point he's gonna need to be weak and vulnerable in front of another person if he wants the comfort he never received as a child

Deep diving into Alejandro's ethnicity and family because the show is vague with how both are portrayed, and I'm pedantic:
Tumblr media
Off the bat, we know that he was born in 🇪🇸 Spain. Or at least, that's what his wiki page says, so I'm sure it's mentioned in some kind of canon content (the show, the character interviews, the creators' stating it, ect). He often times speaks en español, either by replacing words and phrases in otherwise English sentences or cussing out his team in an entirely spanish confession. His name is also rooted in Spanish origin; 'Alejandro' is the Spanish equivalent of Alexander, and his surname 'Burromuerto' literally translates to "Dead Donkey", likely a combination of the idioms "beating a dead horse" and "no ver tres en un burro", translation: can't see three on a donkey; akin to 'blind as a bat'.
I could go on about the symbolism of his name(s) and how it relates to his performance on Total Drama, but that's not essential to the topic at hand so I'll go over it later.*
With this in mind, the show really wants us to believe that he's Spanish, or at the very least Hispanic.
In Chinese Fake-Out, we learn that he won a gold medal at the South American Skate Olympics, so he presumably lived somewhere in South America in his childhood. On the wiki, it claims that he moved to Latin America soon after he was born. His comment in the same episode about eating barbequed guinea pigs where he grew up had a lot of people deducing that he lived in 🇵🇪 Peru since guinea pig is famously a delicacy there. The question begs, why would Alejandro and the rest of the Burromuertos move to Peru from Spain?
We know that Alejandro's father is a diplomat, so uprooting the family to a new country could be related to his work, but I doubt a diplomat would settle down and start a family just to go through the hassle of moving them halfway across the world to a random country, regardless of his salary.
What other reason would anyone have for dragging their brood across the sea? To see their extended family.
Family is a big character motivation for Alejandro: he has a lot of pride in being a Burromuerto and often times complains about disappointing his family or being susceptible to José's teasing when his plans don't work out. Pride is a staple of the Burromuertos; they even have a family code they abide by. That kind of mindset is usually generational, implying that his parents place the same emphasis on the presentation and opinions of their family.
The most glaring example of this mindset is the hate fuelled rivalry between Alejandro and José, which was sparked by their desperate need to be the "better son". The main goal of the Burromuerto brothers is familial recognition. Understandable, when your parents are too successful to raise you themselves, any kid would be desperate for their attention. Since their competition was allowed to escalate to the point of mutual loathing, their parents probably encouraged their behaviour; when you value familial reputation over everything of course you want your children to continuously prove themselves. (Poor Al is just full of complex familial trauma, from his parents' neglect to his brothers' bullying to the incredible pressure he's put under to succeed. No wonder he's like that.)
After seeing how the brothers are willing to go to extremes for the sake of family, it's reasonable that parents sharing that mindset would move across an ocean just to see their relatives (and likely compete with them, after all even a younger Alejandro was showing up everyone in South America's skateboarding scene).
Suggesting that either one or both of his parents, or grandparents, are Latin American. For simplicities sake, we'll say that Alejandro's dad is Spanish (as he carries the surname), and his mother is Peruvian (since Peru is the assumed country they moved to).
That means that the brothers qualify as both Hispanic and Latino. Alejandro's latin blood really is canon, and the stereotypical 'Latin Lover' archetype he fills (alongside the "Archvillain" he's titled as) is all the more accurate. He's evidently very proud of both heritages.
To clarify, the Burromuertos moved to Peru when Alejandro was young to be with his Mother's side of the family.
If we want to really wade into the theoretical waters, I'd like to suggest that Alejandro's father left Spain because he disgraced himself/his family in some way, and that's why he's so insistent on his sons restoring the family pride and prestige.
So, I've established Alejandro's ethnicity and touched on the bare-bones basics of his home life. But what about his other brother, or his uncle? You know, the characters that were mentioned once and never expanded upon. Don't worry, I've got notes on them too.
Carlos: The eldest child and a professional soccer player. Alejandro doesn't mention anything about a rivalry with Carlos. Instead, he suggests the two share a healthier bond as Carlos taught him soccer skills. 'Carlos' the name is a Spanish variant of Charles, meaning "free man". Fitting, since it's widely assumed that Carlos escaped from the Burromuerto home's harmful environment at his first opportunity and 'freed himself' from their high expectations/standards, hence why he doesn't engage in the family-typical hypercompetitive bullying. A somewhat common fandom troupe I've seen is Carlos being disowned by the Burromuertos, and post-World Tour/All-Stars Alejandro reconnecting with him after he too is disowned.
Uncle Julio: The hypnotist. All we really know about Julio is his name and occupation, but it's enough to pin him down as Alejandro's maternal uncle. Alejandro states that he learned hypnosis from Julio in The EX-Files; as he grew up in Peru, the only family he reasonably could have interacted with outside of the nuclear unit would be his mother's relatives. His comment "manipulation runs in the family" is never ascribed to the Burromuertos by name, which adds to the implication that Julio isn't his father's brother, as any skill as useful as hypnosis would definitely be branded under his surname otherwise. Additionally, 'Julio' as a name is derivative of the Latin Julius or Julianus (meaning "Devoted to Jove/Jupiter", the Roman incarnation of Zeus, though I can't find any meaning in this applicable to his character), and not a strictly Spanish name like those of Alejandro and his brothers. Instead, it's common in most Hispanic and Latin American countries.
José: The middle child and Alejandro's source of his lingering childhood trauma, if the aversion to the nickname "Al" is anything to go by, I've already written about their relationship. The name 'José' is a Spanish variant of Joseph, which means "to add/give" in it's simplest interpretation. He sure does give Alejandro a tonne of issues, so I suppose it tracks.
*And finally, analysing the symbolism of Alejandro's name.
Alejandro, derived from Alexander, meaning "warrior" and "man's defender". Though in Al's case, it's likely a reference to Alexander the Great as opposed to the name's literal meaning/origins- Alejandro conquered the competition like Alexander conquered his empire.
Burromuerto's double idioms combine "beating a dead horse donkey" with "blind as a bat", likely as a convoluted way to say he's blinding the dead donkey; in this case, the beaten dead horse donkey is the OG cast of Total Drama who have already been milked for two seasons of content and have little left to offer (therefore, the third season is the beating of the dead horse, as its' an attempt to force content out of a resource with nothing left to give. that's why they added two more competitors, if that makes any sense? I'm not sure if I'm explaining this well enough,) and Alejandro is deceiving or 'blinding' them through his manipulations.
Obviously, this is all speculation written by someone with too much free time and no expertise. All of my knowledge/facts come from google searches and connecting dots that likely have no real links to each other. I'm not an authority on any subject. Keep that in mind, please.
Feel free to add your own opinions/thoughts! Or correct things that are be wrong!
