* * * *
On the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, November 22, former president Trump hosted the antisemitic artist Ye, also known as Kanye West, for dinner at a public table at Mar-a-Lago along with political operative Karen Giorno, who was the Trump campaign’s 2016 state director in Florida. Ye brought with him 24-year-old far-right white supremacist Nick Fuentes. Fuentes attended the August 2017 “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, and in its wake, he committed to moving the Republican Party farther to the right. Fuentes has openly admired Italian fascist dictator Benito Mussolini and authoritarian Russian president Vladimir Putin, who is currently making war on Russia’s neighbor Ukraine. A Holocaust denier, Fuentes is associated with America’s neo-Nazis. In February 2020, Fuentes launched the America First Political Action Conference to compete from the right with the Conservative Political Action Conference. In May 2021, on a livestream, Fuentes said: “My job…is to keep pushing things further. We, because nobody else will, have to push the envelope. And we’re gonna get called names. We’re gonna get called racist, sexist, antisemitic, bigoted, whatever.… When the party is where we are two years later, we’re not gonna get the credit for the ideas that become popular. But that’s okay. That’s our job. We are the right-wing flank of the Republican Party. And if we didn’t exist, the Republican Party would be falling backwards all the time.” Fuentes and his “America First” followers, called “Groypers” after a cartoon amphibian (I’m not kidding), backed Trump’s lies that he had actually won the 2020 election. At a rally shortly after the election, Fuentes told his followers to “storm every state capitol until Jan. 20, 2021, until President Trump is inaugurated for four more years.” Fuentes and Groypers were at the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol, and at least seven of them have been charged with federal crimes for their association with that attack. The House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol subpoenaed Fuentes himself. Accounts of the dinner suggest that Trump and Fuentes hit it off, with Trump allegedly saying, “I like this guy, he gets me,” after Fuentes urged Trump to speak freely off the cuff rather than reading teleprompters and trying to appear presidential as his handlers advise. But Trump announced his candidacy for president in 2024 just days ago, and being seen publicly with far-right white supremacist Fuentes—in addition to Ye—indicates his embrace of the far right. His team told NBC’s Marc Caputo that the dinner was a “f**king nightmare.” Trump tried to distance himself from the meeting by saying he didn’t know who Fuentes was, and that he was just trying to help Ye out by giving the “seriously troubled” man advice, but observers noted that he did not distance himself from Fuentes’s positions. Republican lawmakers have been silent about Trump’s apparent open embrace of the far right, illustrating the growing power of that far right in the Republican Party. Representatives Paul Gosar (R-AZ) and Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) have affiliated themselves with Fuentes, and while their appearances with him at the America First Political Action Conference last February drew condemnation from Republican leader Representative Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), now McCarthy desperately needs the votes of far-right Republicans to make him speaker of the House. To get that support, he has been promising to deliver their wish list—including an investigation into President Joe Biden’s son Hunter—and appears willing to accept Fuentes and his followers into the party, exactly as Fuentes hoped. Today, after the news of Trump’s dinner and the thundering silence that followed it, conservative anti-Trumper Bill Kristol tweeted: “Aren’t there five decent Republicans in the House who will announce they won’t vote for anyone for Speaker who doesn’t denounce their party’s current leader, Donald Trump, for consorting with the repulsive neo-Nazi Fuentes?” So far, at least, the answer is no.

Put down your shovel Ron DeSantis! 🤦‍♂️
Tumblr media
Thank God for John James. I wish I had a twatter account just so I could HIGH 5 him. I've actually written 2 Tumblr Draft Posts venting about this online insanity. I still might share my thoughts here, but for now John James of Michigan nailed it.
From JohnJamesMI to RonDeSantis:
#1: slavery was not CTE! Nothing about that 400 years of evil was a “net benefit” to my ancestors. #2: there are only five black Republicans in Congress and you’re attacking two of them. My brother in Christ… if you find yourself in a deep hole put the shovel down. You are now so far from the Party of Lincoln that your Ed. board is re-writing history and you’re personally attacking conservatives like VoteTimScott and ByronDonalds on the topic of slavery. You’ve gone too far. Stop.

Ron DeSantis Slams GOP Rival Tim Scott for Criticism of Florida Black History Curriculum
Scott is the second Black Republican DeSantis has attacked on the issue as siding with Democrats
Published 07/28/23 Marc Caputo
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis accused a Republican presidential campaign rival, Sen. Tim Scott, of laundering Democratic talking points by suggesting that the Sunshine State wanted to teach kids there was a “silver lining” to slavery.”
“Part of the reason our country has struggled is that all too often D.C. Republicans accept false narratives, accept lies that are perpetrated by the left," DeSantis said Friday while campaigning in Iowa. "And to accept the lie that Kamala Harris has been perpetrating even when that has been debunked, that's not the way you do it. The way you do it, the way you lead, is to fight back against the lies. So I'm here defending my state of Florida against false accusations and lies."
DeSantis’s counter marked the second day in a row of responding to a Black Republican criticizing him over the education standards by comparing them Harris, the first Black vice president, who traveled last week to Florida and bashed DeSantis.
On Thursday, he similarly swiped at Florida Republican Rep. Byron Donalds, a supporter of Donald Trump in the presidential primary who called for a slight adjustment in the education standards that say slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit.”
DeSantis pointed out that Harris and other Black Democrats had embraced an AP African American history course that they backed —and that he opposed — had substantially similar language about slaves learning “specialized trades” but “nobody said anything about that.”But Scott, the only Black Republican senator, later that evening took DeSantis to task.
“The truth is that anything you can learn, any benefits that people suggest you had during slavery, you would have had as a free person,” Scott told reporters. “What slavery was really about was separating families, about mutilating humans and even raping their wives. It was just devastating.”
DeSantis has repeatedly pointed out the state standards clearly teach the evils of history and racism
Lost in the discussion over the slavery issue is another major controversy concerning the standards that indicates kids should learn about violence “by African Americans” before they were massacred by rampaging white people.
DeSantis's feud with Black lawmakers from both parties who don’t support himerupted as his campaign struggled to regain its footing after financial troubles and struggles in the polls. Trump leads DeSantis by wide margins with Scott in third in many surveys.
DeSantis advisers say he won’t back down in the face of criticism, even as the controversy has raged into its second week and, according to critics, helped undercut his message that he will be a better general election candidate to defeat Joe Biden because he can get more independent and swing voters.

DeSantis Attacks GOP Rep. Donalds Over Criticism of Florida Black History Curriculum
The Republican presidential candidate and Florida governor also took aim at Vice President Kamala Harris 07/27/23
Marc Caputo
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis swiped at a reporter and accused a fellow home state Republican congressman Thursday of siding with Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris for saying that a controversial state curriculum provision about slavery should be changed.
DeSantis said Rep. Byron Donalds —who endorsed Donald Trump in the presidential primary over the governor — was wrong to say that the new Florida standards suggested suggested that slavery was beneficial to some slaves.
After those standards passed last week, Harris flew to Florida and accused DeSantis of trying to whitewash history.
But DeSantis stuck back, noting that Harris and other Democratic critics had endorsed an Advanced Placement Black history studies course that had a similar point. At the end of the day, you gotta choose: Are you gonna side with Kamala Harris and liberal media outlets? Are you going to side with the state of Florida? And I think it’s very clear these guys these guys did a good job on those standards,” DeSantis told reporters.
The standards in question say that “slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit.”
DeSantis mispronounced Harris's first name (which sounds like “comma-lah”) but later sounded it out properly.
“Don’t side with Kam-a-la on that. Stand up for your state,” DeSantis told Donalds.
The row came at a low point for DeSantis’s presidential campaign as he reels from financial woes, layoffs and bad poll numbers vs. Trump. When Donald spoke up via Twitter with a mild suggestion DeSantis amend the language, the governor’s campaign and executive office both criticized him.
After the blowback, Donalds took to Twitter to say that “What's crazy to me is I expressed support for the vast majority of the new African American history standards and happened to oppose one sentence that seemed to dignify the skills gained by slaves as a result of their enslavement.
“Anyone who can't accurately interpret what I said is disingenuous and is desperately attempting to score political points,” Donalds wrote. “Just another reason why l'm proud to have endorsed President Donald J. Trump!”
DeSantis also had a testy exchange with a reporter who asked “were there benefits to slavery?”
“That’s not what the curriculum says,” DeSantis shot back.
“What do you think?” the reporter asked.
“The curriculum is very clear. I think it’s like 200-plus pages of all kinds of stuff that —you can’t read that. Have you read it?” DeSantis responded.
When the reporter didn’t answer the governor’s question, he asked again “Have you read it?”What’s your opinion?” the reporter repeated.
“But you haven’t read it,” DeSantis said. “So I’m just making that clear. That makes it very clear about the injustices of slavery in vivid detail. So anyone that actually read that and then listens to Kamala would know that she’s lying. And that particular provision about the skills, that was in spite of slavery not because of it.”
“The AP course has made that same point,” DeSantis continued. “Other courses have made that same point. Nobody said anything about that.”
Tumblr media
The fight over Florida's new African American history curriculum that suggests slaves derived "personal benefit" from slavery has turned into a war among conservatives as Gov. Ron DeSantis aides are attacking Black Republican Rep. Byron Donalds.
"We will not back down from teaching our nation’s true history at the behest of a woke @WhiteHouse, nor at the behest of a supposedly conservative congressman," Education Commissioner Manny Diaz, Jr., tweeted abut Donalds.
Diaz slammed the representative after Donalds said that he supported almost the entirety of the new standards, calling them "robust" and "accurate," however it was line about slavery that needed to be change.
"What's crazy to me is I expressed support for the vast majority of the new African American history standards and happened to oppose one sentence that seemed to dignify the skills gained by slaves as a result of their enslavement," Donalds tweeted. "Anyone who can't accurately interpret what I said is disingenuous and is desperately attempting to score political points."
Just another reason why l'm proud to have endorsed President Donald J. Trump!" Donalds added.
Jason Miller, a senior advisor to Trump tweeted out a statement in defense of Donalds calling him a "conservative hero." Miller lambasted the DeSantis team for their attempts to "smear" the congressman.
"Ron DeSantis needs to look in the mirror and recognize that at his current trajectory, it's not just 2024 that is dead for him, but 2028 as well," Miller's statement read. "DeSantis' misguided attacks are only helping Joe Biden, and if that's his goal, DeSantis should just get out of the race."
Christina Pushnaw, who works as DeSantis' Director of Rapid Response, has compared Donalds criticisms of the curriculum to those voiced by Vice President Kamala Harris.
Pushnaw responded to both Miller and Donalds' tweets with a Harris gifs.

Over 1,000 New York City police officers have filed to leave the department in 2022, raising doubts about the city's ability to maintain a substantive police force and maintain safety and security.
Former NYPD detective Jason Caputo and Blue Lives Matter NYC founder Joe Imperatrice weighed in on the law enforcement exodus on "Fox & Friends First" Monday, arguing that incentives for working with The Big Apple's police force no longer exist.
"You're losing qualified [people], you're losing experience, you're losing so much when it comes to that kind of stuff," Caputo told guest host Ashley Strohmier.
NYC SEES DISTURBING SEX CRIME TREND, AS POLICE HUNT SERIAL ASSAILANTS ATTACKING WOMEN ON MANHATTAN STREETS
The former detective's comments come a month after he left his 18-year service and as others partaking in the exodus leave before receiving full pensions.
MMA FIGHTER DETAILS HOW HE TOOK DOWN NYC HOMELESS MAN WHO WAS ATTACKING BYSTANDERS
Caputo claimed the city is "steering away" from encouraging officers to apprehend criminals, adding that city and NYPD leaders are "putting victims and police in jeopardy."
Strohmier shifted the discussion to New York City's "diaphragm law," which prohibits officers from placing suspects in choke holds or exerting pressure on a suspect's diaphragm and pointed to a recent example of MMA fighter Ro Malabanan, who helped take down a criminal suspect by securing him against the ground.
"The progressive city council would have went after an officer [if they had done the same move], they would have went after their job," Imperatrice said. "Any type of fight – especially martial arts – you end up on the ground, and that's what it's all about; you're trying to subdue the individual. That MMA fighter did nothing wrong, but he had to use his body weight to subdue them until officers arrived…"
Imperatrice and Caputo both claimed officers are risking "everything" to do their jobs amid a hostile environment toward law enforcement.
Caputo followed up on the topic, answering Strohmier's question about incentives for joining the NYPD by saying there are "none," and adding, "I wouldn't really encourage that many people to take this job anymore."

Pokemon English Voice Compare/Rank, Champions
In which I rank the English dub voice actors of Pokemon characters from strongest to weakest, and sometimes throw in my 2 cents of who I think would be solid casting choices. This one is for Champions.
LANCE: 1. Bill Milsap - Voice of Lance in Pokemon Masters. Think Grant George crossed with Steve Blum and that describes Bill’s voice for Lance here, and I think it works really well. He sounds appropriately bold and heroic, but his voice can veer towards warmth and towards intimidating fearsomeness depending on the lines he’s speaking. 2. Ben Diskin - Voice of Lance in Pokemon Generations. While basically the same voice he does for other serious bishie characters like Young Xehanort, it suits a character like Lance. He’s particularly good when he raises his voice and displays his feroctiy. 3. Wayne Grayson - Voice of Lance in the main anime. When the character appeared in Johto and Hoenn, Wayne’s voice for him was terrible and not remotely fitting. But when Lance was reintroduced in Journeys, Wayne reprised the role and finally did him justice. 4. Robert Bucholtz - Voice of Lance in Pokemon Origins. For a Dragon Master, leader of the Elite Four, and future Champion, Bob’s voice acting for Lance is exceptionally dull and carries no presence. It’s just the most Average Joe sort of voice you could hear. FANCAST OPTION(S): Grant George or Max Mittelman for Lance?
STEVEN STONE: 1. Andrew Paull - Voice of Steven in the main anime. He was only in one episode of the Ruby & Sapphire series and like what happened with Lance, Andrew performed the part pretty awfully. But when the character returned in XY and Journeys, his vocal improvement fit perfectly and it’s hard to imagine Steven sounding any different. 2. Xander Mobus - Voice of Steven in Pokemon Masters. The sound of Xander’s voice always suited Steven, but his delivery was at first too smarmy and self-satisfied. His approach to the role as of the 2021 Anniversary is much better and more in line with Andrew Paull. 3. Tom Wayland - Voice of Steven in the animated trailer for Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire. Like his N from the last animated trailer, this is ill fitting even for just one line. He sounds too young and immature.
WALLACE: 1. Mickey Caputo - Voice of Wallace in Pokemon Masters EX. Goes very low and raspy despite the light, effeminate tone, and his delivery really sells the elegant artist who’s perfromative but level-headed. 2. Sean Reyes - Voice of Wallace in the anime. Nothing about this vocal performance stands out to me. Just like Wallace in this anime! FANCAST OPTION - Johnathan Todd Ross. He’s got the sort of voice I’d imagine for Wallace, so with acting and delivery akin to what Mickey Caputo did in the role, he’d be surprisingly excellent.
CYNTHIA: 1. Allegra Clark - Voice of Cynthia in Pokemon Masters. Her voice for Cynthia reflects everything that is awesome about her, and any time she’s had to do a reprisal her delivery has remained so on point. 2. Emily Bauer - Voice of Cynthia in the main anime. Being the VA for Cynthia AND Dawn meant that Emily had her work cut out for her early on, and in the latter half of the Diamond & Pearl dub she devolved into this very pretentiously high and mighty sounding faux-aristocratic tone. In the Best Wishes and Journeys dubs, her Cynthia saw massive improvement and is about as perfect as Allegra’s. 3. Tara Janye Sands - Voice of Cynthia in Pokemon Generations. With more material to work with, she probably could’ve done just fine, but for the short that features her she just put on a “heroic” tone and called it a day, failing to really impress with the few lines she got. FANCAST OPTION(S) - Nicole Oliver would be my top pick, but as she’s a Canada VA, Ali Hillis would be my number two choice. Or maybe Marissa Lenti if her Nicole Oliver impression has improved.
ALDER: 1. Cam Clarke - Voice of Alder in Pokemon Masters EX. It’s...it’s Cam Clarke, guys. One of the most seasoned veteran voice actors in the industry, making him perfect as an aging, experienced Champion. 2. Scottie Ray - Voice of Alder in the main anime. Scottie is very good at doing gruff voices, and also nailed the humorous and serious sides of Alder to really make use of an otherwise wasted character. 3. Andrew Eales - Voice of Alder in Pokemon Evolutions. His lack of much voice acting experience makes him playing Alder as well as he did a pleasant surprise, but the one downside is that you can sort of tell it’s a much younger VA trying to sound older to match the role.
FANCAST OPTION: Daran Norris for Alder, please? If Cowboy Bebop and Digimon were able to have him, I don’t see why not!
IRIS: 1. Cassandra Lee Morris - Voice of Iris in Pokemon Masters. Going higher, squeakier, and even more youthful than she normally does, Cassandra gives Iris exactly the sort of rambunctious, energetic, and sassy voice and performance I’d imagine to hear from the character.
2. TIE - Eileen Stevens & Anairis Quinones - Voices of Iris in the main anime. Eileen’s vocal performance as Iris is, for the most part, really good and lots of fun to listen to. My only issue is actually just the voice itself, how it sounds a little too matured and sometimes shrill compared to Aoi Yuki’s take. Anairis Quinones was my Fancast Option for Iris for a while since she’s got a voice not too unlike Eileen Stevens, isn’t white, and has Iris in her name...and then they actually cast her as Iris for the Masters 8 Tournament in Pokemon Journeys!
3. Cherami Leigh - Voice of Iris in Pokemon Generations. Cherami Freaking Leigh should be casting gold, but she unfortunately fell into the same trap Grant George did as N in that her line reads come in three different voices without any solid consistency. Had she carried her initial voice through the whole performance, she’d have got it.
DIANTHA: 1. Antonia Flynn - Voice of Diantha in Pokemon Masters EX. There is something about her naturally warm, melodius voice that makes Diantha so likable and pleasing to listen to, making her the best fit for a Champion who’s also an actress and occasional nobility LARPer. 2. Amber Lee Connors - Voice of Diantha in Pokemon Evolutions. Her voice sounds similar to Antonia Flynn’s, but her line delivery could’ve been better directed. I’m too aware that she’s acting here. 3. Laura Post - Voice of Diantha in Pokemon Generations. Opposite of the above, her delivery is perfectly natural but the voice might be a little too literal-minded in the Audrey Hepburn influence. 4. Vanessa Gardner - Voice of Diantha in the main anime. I’m sorry, but this vocal performance was just very bland and underwhelming.
LEON: 1. Cedric Williams - Voice of Leon in Pokemon Masters EX. Despite the laughably fake British accent, Cedric’s Leon sounds the most unique among the character’s voices and he best captures the enthusiasm, pride, and childish qualities that Leon is known for.
2. Alejandro Saab - Voice of Leon in the main anime. He does a virtually flawless job of selling this incarnation of Leon, making him sound cool and tough but friendly and not unapproachable. He only falls to second place because we’ve heard him do similar voices for Roark and Kukui in Pokemon Masters well before he voiced Leon. 3. Aleks Le - Voice of Leon in Pokemon Evolutions. Maybe it was to fit the character model, but that voice is just WAY too deep. Aleks was a much better fit for Piers than he was for Leon. 4. Kai Jordan - Voice of Leon in Pokemon: Twilight Wings. This is the opposite problem from the above, as the voice Kai gives to Leon is too light and honestly sounds like it should’ve gone to Hop instead. FANCAST OPTION - IDK, an actual British guy would be nice.
NEMONA:
1. Yolis Arroyo - Voice of Nemona in Pokemon Horizons.
2. Olivia Vidas - Voice of Nemona in Pokemon: Paldean Winds.
3. Cristina Milizia - Voice of Nemona in Pokemon Masters EX.
FANCAST OPTION - Michelle Rojas

Biden takes a tougher stance on Israel’s ‘indiscriminate bombing’ of Gaza (AP) President Joe Biden on Tuesday warned that Israel was losing international support because of its “indiscriminate bombing” of Gaza, speaking out in unusually strong language just hours before the United Nations demanded a humanitarian cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas war. “Israel’s security can rest on the United States, but right now it has more than the United States. It has the European Union, it has Europe, it has most of the world supporting them,” Biden said to donors during a fundraiser Tuesday. “They’re starting to lose that support by indiscriminate bombing that takes place,” he said. The president also renewed his warnings that Israel should not make the same mistakes of overreaction that the U.S. did following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Texas weather is getting hotter and more extreme, study finds (Dallas Morning News) In the coming years, Texas can expect more blistering heat, extreme rainfall and devastating droughts, according to a new report by the state’s climatologist. The severe heat and drought of the past two years were not anomalies, but rather part of a trend toward hotter summers and milder winters, the report says. Notably, the number of 100-degree days in Texas has tripled over the past 40 years. This year, Dallas-Fort Worth recorded 55 days of at least 100 degrees.
Miss Nicaragua pageant director announces her retirement after accusations of ‘conspiracy’ (AP) On Monday, Miss Nicaragua pageant director Karen Celebertti announced her retirement nine days after Nicaraguan police accused her of rigging the beauty competition so anti-government contestants would win as part of a plot to overthrow the government of President Daniel Ortega. Celebertti, her husband, and her son were all charged with treason, conspiracy, and organized crime. Gives a whole new meaning to the phrase “political pageantry.”
Argentina sharply devalues its currency and cuts subsidies as part of shock economic measures (AP) Argentina on Tuesday announced a sharp devaluation of its currency and cuts to energy and transportation subsidies as part of shock measures new President Javier Milei says are needed to deal with an economic emergency. Economy Minister Luis Caputo said in a televised message the Argentine peso will be devalued by 50% to 800 to the U.S. dollar from 400 pesos to the dollar. “For a few months, we’re going to be worse than before,” Caputo said, two days after the libertarian Milei was sworn in as president of the second largest economy in South America and immediately warned of tough measures. Argentina is suffering 143% annual inflation, its currency has plunged and four in 10 Argentines are impoverished. The nation has also a yawning fiscal deficit, a trade deficit of $43 billion, plus a daunting $45 billion debt to the International Monetary Fund, with $10.6 billion due to the multilateral and private creditors by April.
Millions infected with dengue this year in new record as hotter temperatures cause virus to flare (AP) Dengue is sweeping across the Western Hemisphere in numbers not seen since record-keeping began more than four decades ago, with experts warning that rising temperatures and rapid urbanization are accelerating the pace of infections. A record more than 4 million cases have been reported throughout the Americas and Caribbean so far this year, surpassing a previous record set in 2019, with officials from the Bahamas to Brazil warning of crowded clinics and new infections daily. More than 2,000 deaths in that region also have been reported. “This year is the year we’ve been seeing the most dengue in recorded history,” said Thais dos Santos, adviser on surveillance and control of arboviral diseases with the Pan American Health Organization, the regional office of the World Health Organization in the Americas.
Ballistic missiles hit Kyiv overnight, injuring more than 50 (Washington Post) Russia fired a barrage of hypersonic ballistic missiles at Kyiv in the early hours of Wednesday morning, injuring dozens of people and causing damage and fires from falling debris throughout the capital, city authorities said. Loud explosions jolted many residents out of bed around 3 a.m. in central Kyiv, followed by air raid alert sirens a few minutes later. Ukraine’s air force said that antiaircraft defenses shot down all 10 ballistic missiles that were launched at Kyiv. That assertion could not be independently confirmed. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said that 53 people were injured, including six children, and that buildings were damaged throughout districts in the part of the city lying on the eastern bank of the Dnieper River. The overnight airstrikes followed a major cyberattack on Tuesday that knocked out Kyivstar, Ukraine’s largest mobile phone and internet service provider, cutting off service to more than 24 million subscribers.
Zelensky warns of guerrilla war as Ukraine aid stalls in Congress (Washington Post) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told Congress on Tuesday that his country will never give up in its fight to expel invading Russian forces, and he warned that without additional U.S. assistance, the conflict will turn far more brutal as his military inevitably cedes ground to its determined and well-armed adversary. But Zelensky’s visit to Washington, coordinated by the White House as Ukraine edges closer to running out of weapons and cash, has done little to dislodge the intractable standoff over President Biden’s request for more than $60 billion in additional aid and Republican demands for a blockbuster deal on immigration reform. Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) said that Zelensky had invoked the term “guerrilla warfare,” alluding to the bloody, unconventional tactics employed by insurgents against occupying U.S. forces in Afghanistan and Iraq, and suggested that that is where the conflict could be headed if Ukraine loses U.S. military assistance.
Myanmar overtakes Afghanistan as top opium producer (BBC) Myanmar is now the world’s largest producer of opium, overtaking Afghanistan, a UN report says. Its opium production this year is estimated to rise by 36% to 1,080 tonnes, far ahead of the 330 tonnes Afghanistan reportedly produced. Poppy cultivation in Afghanistan dropped by 95% after a drug ban by the ruling Taliban last year. Meanwhile, cultivation has expanded in Myanmar, where a brutal civil war, has made it a lucrative source of income.
Videos of soldiers acting maliciously create new headache for Israel (AP) Israeli soldiers rummaging through private homes in Gaza. Forces destroying plastic figurines in a toy store, or trying to burn food and water supplies in the back of an abandoned truck. Troops with their arms slung around each other, chanting racist slogans as they dance in a circle. Several viral videos and photos of Israeli soldiers behaving in a derogatory manner in Gaza have emerged in recent days, creating a headache for the Israeli military as it faces an international outcry over its tactics and the rising civilian death toll in its punishing war against Hamas. Such videos are not a new or unique phenomenon. Over the years, Israeli soldiers—and members of the U.S. and other militaries—have been caught on camera acting inappropriately or maliciously in conflict zones. But critics say the new videos, largely shrugged off in Israel, reflect a national mood that is highly supportive of the war in Gaza, with little empathy for the plight of Gaza’s civilians.
Gaza After Nine Weeks of War (NYT) Nine weeks ago, the Gaza Strip was a bustling home to more than two million people. Today, neighborhoods have been flattened by Israeli airstrikes and farming communities have been bulldozed by invading Israeli tanks. Video and satellite imagery captured in late November and early December reveals a devastating transformation in much of northern Gaza. Satellite imagery shows that the fighting has resulted in heavy damage to almost every corner of Gaza City. A U.N. assessment in early November found that at least 6,000 buildings had been damaged with about a third of them destroyed.
Israel Begins Pumping Seawater Into Hamas’s Gaza Tunnels (WSJ) Israel’s military has begun pumping seawater into Hamas’s vast complex of tunnels in Gaza, according to U.S. officials briefed on the Israeli military’s operations, part of an intensive effort to destroy the underground infrastructure that has underpinned the group’s operations. Israeli officials say that Hamas’s underground system has been key to its operations on the battlefield. The tunnel system, they say, is used by Hamas to maneuver fighters across the battlefield and store the group’s rockets and munitions, and enables the group’s leaders to command and control their forces. Israel also believes some hostages are being held inside tunnels. The utility of using seawater in a vast underground labyrinth that extends for roughly 300 miles and includes thick blast doors is still being evaluated by the Israelis, according to U.S. officials. Flooding the tunnels, which would likely be a weekslong process. Some Biden administration officials have been concerned that using seawater might not be effective and could endanger Gaza’s freshwater supply.
How Africans Are Changing French—One Joke, Rap and Book at a Time (NYT) French, by most estimates the world’s fifth most spoken language, is changing—perhaps not in the gilded hallways of the institution in Paris that publishes its official dictionary, but on a rooftop in Abidjan, the largest city in Ivory Coast. There one afternoon, a 19-year-old rapper who goes by the stage name “Marla” rehearsed her upcoming show. Her words were mostly French, but the Ivorian slang and English words that she mixed in made a new language. To speak only French, “c’est zogo”—“it’s uncool,” said Marla, whose real name is Mariam Dosso, combining a French word with Ivorian slang. But playing with words and languages, she said, is “choco,” an abbreviation for chocolate meaning “sweet” or “stylish.” A growing number of words and expressions from Africa are now infusing the French language, spurred by booming populations of young people in West and Central Africa. More than 60 percent of those who speak French daily now live in Africa, and 80 percent of children studying in French are in Africa. There are as many French speakers in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, as in Paris. Through social media platforms like TikTok and YouTube, they are literally spreading the word, reshaping the French language from African countries.

Natalie Figueroa and Joe Caputo are the most underrated, unappreciated relationship of Orange is the New Black. It is too bad, they deserve more love. Too bad I am focusing on too many fandoms at once while giffing Putin. I only giffed one scene of them.

November 26, 2022 (Saturday)I hate to break up a holiday weekend with a political post, but I want to put down a marker for the record.
