Beneath the ancient stones of the #WesternWall, or #Kotel, a newly wedded couple bows their heads, their silent prayers weaving with the echoes of a thousand generations. Today is not just a day of union for them. It's the start of a journey together, one that begins on the mysterious yet intriguing festival of Tu B'Av.
Tu B'Av, the 15th of Av, is a uniquely special day on the Jewish calendar. A search of the Shulchan Aruch, the Code of Jewish Law, might not reveal much. There are no prescribed observances or customs, aside from the omission of the tachanun (confession of sins) and an instruction to increase one's study of Torah. Yet, this seemingly ordinary day holds a magic that's been recognized for ages.
On this day, the Talmud tells us, the "daughters of Jerusalem would go dance in the vineyards," a celebration of love and life that transforms the mundane into the extraordinary. Young men who did not yet have a wife would attend, not just to watch, but to find a companion to share their life's journey with. Yes, on this day, love is not just celebrated, but sought, chased, and hopefully, found.
The Talmud declares Tu B'Av as the greatest festival of the year, surpassing even Yom Kippur! It's a mystery, much like the full moon that marks this day in the month of Av - a symbol of future redemption, an essence that remains elusive to our yet unredeemed selves. The unknowable may be mystifying, but isn't that the allure of love too? Isn't it the thrill of the chase, the anticipation of the mystery unfolding that makes love all the more precious?
So, whether you are newly wedded like our couple at the Western Wall or still searching for your special someone, take this Tu B'Av to heart. The stars are aligning, the vineyards are waiting, and love is in the air. It's your time now - time to embrace the mystery, to seek the unknowable. Love may be a puzzle, but every piece found, every step taken brings you closer to completing the beautiful picture.

Jewish Festival of Lights
Tumblr media
The Jewish Festival of Lights is known as Hanukkah, also spelled Chanukah. It is an eight-day celebration that commemorates the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem after it was reclaimed by the Maccabees from the Greek Seleucid Empire in the 2nd century BCE.
The holiday is typically celebrated in December, and it involves lighting a nine-branched candelabrum known as a menorah. One candle is lit on the first night, and an additional candle is added each subsequent night until all nine candles are lit on the eighth night. The ninth branch, known as the shamash, is used to light the other candles.
Other Hanukkah traditions include playing with a spinning top known as a dreidel, which has Hebrew letters on each side, and eating foods fried in oil, such as latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (jelly-filled donuts). The use of oil symbolizes the miracle of the small amount of oil that burned for eight days in the Temple's menorah.

Happy Passover! To all my friends celebrating, wherever you are, may you have joy now and throughout the year.
Tumblr media
The Passover holiday begins before sundown on Monday, 22nd April 2024, and ends after nightfall on 30th April 2024.
The First night of Passover 2024 is April 22nd, which is the most important day during the 8-day Passover celebration. The first Sedar takes place on this evening after sunset.
Passover is one of the most important festivals in the Jewish calendar. It serves as a celebration of the story of Exodus, as Jews remember their ancestors leaving slavery.
The spring festival begins on the 15th day of Nisan, the first month of the year in the Jewish calendar, according to biblical reckoning and the seventh month of the civil year, usually falling between March and April.
This also happens to be a Jewish leap year. Leap years are built into the lunar calendar because the lunar year is about 11 days shorter than the solar year, so an extra month is added to certain years to make up the difference.

It won't rise! it’s a reference to the practice of consuming unleavened cracker-like flatbreads (matzah or matzo) at the Jewish festival of Passover when leavening is forbidden

Freedom The four cups of wine drunk on seder night symbolize four distinct stages of freedom from Egypt. The ascent from a dark place is very rarely achieved in one step and often involves a long journey of self-discovery and growth. Check up out at judaikaart.com
