Top-20 local, political movers and shakers
After more than 12 years, I have finally gotten around to publishing an update about who I consider to be the most 20 influential politicians, policy makers and staffers in the Biddeford-Saco area.
This list is a bit different from my original 2012 list. Most notably, I have shortened the list from 25 names in 2012 to our current list of the top-20 movers and shakers.
Several people on this…

Politically Objectionable, Objectively Thrilling 'The Terminal List' pushes Chris Pratt further to the Hollywood Edge
Politically Objectionable, Objectively Thrilling ‘The Terminal List’ pushes Chris Pratt further to the Hollywood Edge
Last year, Chris Pratt showed up in The Tomorrow War. A bland-looking cookie-cutter sci-fi actioner from Amazon Prime. That bland visual look from Amazon is back along with Chris Pratt to deliver a rock’em sock ’em nauseating vengeance trip where the violent ends barely justify the means.
This is the meat and potatoes, airport paperback style of Amazon’s previous J.R. series (Jack Ryan and Jack…

Looking back, I find it interesting that NCIS hired The Sexiest Man Alive, but ended up developing a character that was, when you think about it, pretty sexless. I'm not saying Gibbs wasn't sexy or couldn't attract women (particularly in those first 3 seasons, holy hell), but once the Shannon story was introduced, the writers really backed away from utilising him as a romantic interest. Think about it- in 18 years, he had 2 on-screen love interests. (I'm not counting Jack, because there was no follow through.)
Hollis Mann
Sam Ryan
Everything else either came before we knew him or came before the Shannon story was introduced.
Diane
Rebecca
Stephanie
Ellen Wallace (remember her??)
The Mysterious Redhead
Jenny Shepard
In comparison, unlike the majority of Gibbs' relationships that happened before the show, Tony DiNozzo's relationships (even briefly) were predominantly developed on the show, as we were watching it.
Multiple off-screen gfs who were used as a joke or plot point
Wendy Miller
E.J
Jeanne
Ari Haswari's henchwoman
Paula Cassidy
Zoe Keates
Ziva
I mean, it's pretty obvious what kind of character the writers were going for when they cast Michael Weatherley. He was meant to be the womaniser. Fair enough. But I wonder if, in an alternate universe, if the show had been created 10 years earlier and Mark Harmon was 42 instead of 52, if Gibbs might've turned out to be a slightly different character? We got a glimpse of it in seasons 1 and 2. Did Mark predict a long-term future for the show and decided he didn't want to be that middle-aged James T Kirk character? Was that what led them to writing the Shannon story? (Perfect way to avoid putting him in relationships if he's still grieving over his very first.) I mean, it ended up being the best of both worlds, in a way. On one hand, the writers weren't saddled with having to make a relationship work for him, but on the other, Mark was given freedom to flirt, giving Gibbs the attraction without the consequences.
I dunno. Just me thinkin'; it's what I do now that the character's gone. LoL!

The Unwritten/Night In The Woods
"So fuck the truth. We dont know where it is, and we probably won’t know it when we see it. She just chose the story she needs right now. The story that keeps her standing. That's probably all any of us get to do./Um, so like, the constellations, I don't believe there's a whale out there, but I, uh, believe the stars exist and that people put the whale up there. Like, I dunno, we're good at drawing lines through the space between stars. Like we're pattern finders, and we'll find patterns, and we like really put our hearts and minds into it even if we don't mean to. So I believe in a universe that doesn't care and people who do”

can you do a longlist of the books about strong girl protags and female friendships, etc. that were really impactful/your favorites so i know what to gift/rec any young girls in my life?
aww!! i would literally love nothing more than to compile such a list ty anon. i tried to put them in an order vaguely representative of youngest audiences to older...i'm not sure how well some of these would hold up in 2023 but they're all ones i remember enjoying and having an impact on me somehow...
not one damsel in distress by jane yolen
the daring book for girls by andrea j. buchanan & miriam peskowitz
the whole dear america series!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the ordinary princess by m. m. kaye
the caddie woodlawn series by carol ryrie brink
walk two moons by sharon creech (i used to have whole passages of this book memorized because i read it so often...potentially the most formative one on this list)
because of winn-dixie by kate dicamillo
the scholastic encyclopedia of U.S. women by sheila keenan (my elementary school art teacher had this book in her classroom library and i remember flipping through it when i was hanging around after school while my mom was doing PTA stuff...it was the first time i'd heard of so many of those women and further stoked my interest in history. i remember being so disturbed [and also intrigued] by the entry about ethel rosenberg specifically. i'm sure there are more updated versions of the book but this is the particular edition i remember reading.)
the penderwick sisters series by jeanne birdsall
bloomability by sharon creech
everything on a waffle by polly horvath
the tracy beaker series by jacqueline wilson
the outcasts of 19 schuyler place by e. l. konigsburg (also extremely formative)
saffy's angel / the whole casson family series by hilary mckay (i used to carry these books around with me as if they were security blankets)
p.s. longer letter later and snail mail no more by paula danziger & ann m. martin
the secret language of girls by frances o'roarke dowell
the tail of emily windsnap by liz kessler
savvy by ingrid law
love, stargirl by jerry spinelli (idk if any book had more of an impact on me as a child tbh like this rocked my world so completely i still think about it/quote it all the time. i know a lot of people read stargirl in school and honestly i don't think it's that good but the sequel is so underrated. so read it.)
a perfect gentle knight by kit pearson
feathers by jacqueline woodson
habibi by naomi shihab nye
the anastasia krupnik series by lois lowry
criss cross by lynne rae perkins
ella enchanted by gail carson levine........OBVIOUSLY
esperanza rising by pam muñoz ryan
kira-kira by cynthia kadohata
the city of ember by jeanne duprau
bad girls by cynthia voigt (tbh i REALLY don't know how this one holds up but i remember thinking it was pretty edgy as a kid)
little women by louisa may alcott
hurt go happy by ginny rorby
persepolis by marjane satrapi (obviously for slightly older readers)
the aforementioned rookie yearbook, natch. (also older)

fic ideas keep coming to me like visions of jeanne d'arc
transfem beckett, either castle clocks her right at s1 or castle keeps trying to get with her & she wants him too but there's smth holding her back, it's basically the show anyway except it's her trans. Alt, transfem beckett x esposito. Or maybe we keep the especkett that the show intentionally implied but instead of being the pre-series especkett or current especkett, it is a during-series caskett fic with a lot of past especkett. (I just love especkett & trans characters)
kanie, we need more kate/lanie fics, we need more femslash.
fatherless boys love jim, I want a fanfiction where esposito & castle spend time with jim or talk to him or get his advice bc he is castle's father in the eyes of the law & well he can be esposito's dad too.
ALSO WE DEF NEED SOME MARTHA/JAVI FICS. Huertas literally said he would love for esposito to be martha, joked that it would be a source of drama for the show. Yeah it's a little bit cracky, but it's also craic as in fun.
I have so many plot bunnies & little ideas & tiny things I want that are not big enough to be fics like that one fic I wrote where the extent of it is castle giving one of the other detectives champagne for, maybe they had their first kid or smth. Well & beckett staring at him lovingly & ryan or esposito (or even monty) coming up to her like heheheh she has a cruuuuuuush *jr high voice*
