There is Nikki Heat fanfiction on fanfiction.net. I had no idea this existed. Castle fans literally wrote fanfiction based on... well, kinda fanfiction.

Have you read Crashing Heat? What do you think of it as the last book in the series? It's the only Nikki Heat book that I didn't read and I don't know if I should buy it, because I didn't read very good reviews (they didn't even translate it into Spanish like all the previous ones), but on the other hand, Heat Storm had so few interactions of Nikki and Rook and I didn't feel like they had an ending as such. Could it be said that they has one in Crashing Heat?
I mean it's.....fine? It requires you to ignore that Hinesburg died previously in the series, and a few other continuity mistakes that annoyed me. The story is at least something different than another presidential candidate being a bad guy (seriously can't believe they wasted two books on that crap) and there are callbacks in the plot to season seven and season eight (and one with season six) that, depending on how you feel about them may make you eye roll or giggle. There are more interactions between Nikki and Rook, but not much character development. The theme of the book for them is basically 'we're mad, let's have sex' or 'i missed you, let's have sex.' But it's miles better than Heat Storm, so that's something I guess. Personally, I wouldn't buy it. See if you can check it out from a local library or something. Not unless you just want a complete set of the books. It's not a must-have in the series to me by any means.

Driving Heat (Nikki Heat 7)
I’m a little behind, but we started September off with book #53.
I love these Nikki Heat books, but I’m gonna have to wait to read the rest of them because they’re giving me the undeniable urge to rewatch Castle. And that is very distracting 🤣
This one made me a little sad and took longer to read than usual because Heat and Rook were fighting...disagreeing...not seeing eye to eye. However you want to phrase it. They weren’t the snarky, bantering, loving couple that I want to read about. But then the action started to pick up and they headed back to normal so in the end it was all good.
These characters, like so many others, have a special place in my heart. I can’t explain why, but they do ❤️

Mystery/Thriller Monday
Tumblr media
I already had a recommendation for one of the books in this series, but, I thought I'd give a rec for the first in the series as well.
Richard Castle is the author on the TV show Castle. On the show he helps the NYPD Detective Kate Beckett and her co-workers solve crimes. He then writes books about Nikki Heat that get ‘published’ during the run of the series. This is the first fictional book made real. Its story is that a New York real estate tycoon falls to his death on a Manhattan sidewalk. At the same time, there’s a helluva heat wave going on in the city. And, so that is not the end to murders that Detective Nikki Heat and her new magazine journalist shadow Jameson Rook have to figure out.
If you’ve never seen the show it’s an okay entry into a mystery series that has 10 novels. And, if you have seen the show, it, along with the few Derrick Storm novels that have been written and published in the real world, are these awesome easter eggs just packed with all sorts of connections with the TV show. They’re quite a fun read, and this is where they started.
You may like this book If you Liked: Casanegra by Blair Underwood, Deja Dead by Kathy Reichs, or One For the Money by Janet Evanovich

The film stars David Carradine (as Frankenstein) opposite pre-Rocky Sylvester Stallone (as Joe “Machine Gun” Viterbo) in the dystopian “future” of the year 2000, a time when Americans root for their favorite drivers as they race from New York to New Los Angeles mowing down civilians along the way for points. Machine Gun Viterbo is out for blood while Frankenstein has other plans. Let the shenanigans begin.
At the time of this writing, Death Race 2000 is available to stream from Tubi, Popcornflix, Cultpix, and PPV from Apple TV.
Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. In two weeks, the next episode, chosen by Bill, will be Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger (1977), showcasing Ray Harryhausen’s genius, Jane Seymour, Patrick Troughton, and . . . Patrick Wayne? That should be interesting.

Blackwing 602: Chapter 3—A Season 2 Caskett . . . multi-chap of indeterminate length.
A/N: I guess this is Chapter 3. I posted Chapter 2 yesterday. Chapter 1 goes back to  2017, when I did NaFicWriMo (30 stories in 30 days), I wrote one called Blackwing 602. Second part is obviously on Tumblr. If you don’t want to read the first part, all you need to know is that in “A Chill Goes Through Her Veins” (1 x 05), Beckett pockets what turns out to be a very expensive pencil when she’s in Castle’s office. This part is set around the time of “When the Bough Breaks” (2 x 04)
Title: Blackwing 602, Chapter 3 WC: 1000
She means to make a gift of it, somehow. That’s a surprise to her, truly. It’s not theater like so much has been lately. It’s not even one of the little white lies that make her world go round when it comes to him—when it comes to why on earth she endures, tolerates, suffers his presence. It’s not even that. She means, truly and definitely, to make a gift of it.
It’s not true from the first or anything. Not right from the moment that she “stumbles” across it.  She has it on hand, and that’s the little white lie. So is the fact that she intends—fully intends—to give it back to hm with a flourish.
She’s been telling herself that one since the sudden urge vigorously organize her desk came on those few nights ago. She’s nodded to herself with satisfaction at the idea that she’s made a decision—she intends to present it with some cutting remark that’ll make him narrow his eyes and flash a smile that’s half admiring and half something more complicated. But opening after opening after opening passes her by when she might have given it back in just that way, and she realizes that she means it to be something more than that.
She means it to be a gift, but that’s absurd. She stole the damned thing. She flat-out stole it right out of his office the first time she’d ever set foot in his home. And the fact that she’d had no idea how much it was worth—the fact that even then she’d never entertained the notion of a freaking pencil that could run someone the price of a massage at very tony spa indeed—is immaterial. It’s stolen property she has in her possession, and the idea of turning it into a gift is just nonsense.
And still, that’s what she means to do, though it’s a while before she sees that.
She carries it in her bag nearly every day. She transfers it to a side drawer in her desk, where she pins it against the very back with post-its or boxes of those stupid binder clips that are too small to be of any use to anyone. And then when it’s finally knocking off time, she looks around like the sneak thief she is, and slips it back to the bag again.
It’s a ritual she’d invented on the spot the day she “stumbled” across it, and every day after that, it burns a hole in the bag, in the drawer, in the bag again, lather, rinse, repeat. And for a while, she really does think—every single day—that she’ll find a moment where simply handing it back to him will make sense.
And not quite every single day, she lets the possible moment pass, until another evening rolls around and finds her still at her desk, straightening, organizing, waiting for it to be safe to retrieve her contraband. And for whatever reason, that night, she sighs. She rolls her eyes at herself, and accepts the fact that she means to make a gift of it.
A gift for what, though? It’s an awkward question. For coming back? For staying?
That’s not it at all. However shared their misery might have been, there’s still a healthy dose of How dare you? simmering in her veins about all that. She’s grateful he stayed. She’s glad in her heart of hearts, but it’s not the kind of thing she has any intention of admitting, even obliquely.
So, then. A gift for what?
The book, she realizes one dreary Sunday. The dedication, a little, but mostly it’s the book itself. She’s dragging around her apartment, unable or unwilling to settle down to any of the half dozen things she could, should, ought to be doing when she slips the book from the shelves.
She collapses back on to the couch and tucks her toes up between the cushions. She slips off the dust jacket, and when she sets it aside, the sense of familiarity embedded in the act is so strong that it’s practically déjà vu. It’s so familiar that when the hardcover drops to her thighs, the well-cracked spine falls open to her favorite spot, and that’s unnerving as hell.
And enlightening.
Because it’s not page 105 it falls open to. That particular stretch still makes her roll her eyes, even if it makes her cheeks burn, too. But that’s not where her copy falls open anyway. It falls open to Powell. Casper he calls the art thief here on the page—one more ridiculous name, and she’s not even sure why he bothered. It’s Powell obviously enough that he must’ve gotten himself in trouble all over again, and she doesn’t hate that. But the trouble he must be in isn’t what she loves about the scene either.
A fine woman who knew her business was killed this week.
It’s a simple bit of dialogue to move the plot forward. It’s motivation for the reluctant, retired thief to weigh in with information on the secondary victim that will move Nikki’s investigation forward. But to her, it’s more than that. It’s a touchstone for the two of them. It’s him reaching all the way back to Joanne Delgado and the stark reality that sank in for him that day—the truth  that every murder claims an untold number of victims, whoever might be left still breathing. It’s him shading in what’s so much more than a detail to her with such unexpected delicacy.
And that’s somehow why she wants to make a gift of it. Because he’s taken her life—her work—and he has . . . amplified it. He has made what’s good and important—the good and the important that extend beyond even the abstract goal of justice—sing out, even to her, and she wants to pay him back in kind, somehow.
Somehow.
So she means to make a gift of it.  A/N: Playing chicken here with myself. I know how it ends, but I have very little of that written. But I guess I have all the time in the world between now and tomorrow morning when the sun will (probably) be up, and I have to continue hammering away at completely reinvented classes.

Quote
She remembered the conversation like it was yesterday. The angle of his head. His penetrating gaze. The movement of his lips as he said her name. “Nikki Heat, you are the inspiration for all my heroines.” She’d blanched. “What does that mean?” “That you live and breathe in my imagination and my dreams.” “You’re a writer,” she’d scoffed, not all pleased to be a presence in his mind when he was writing the sex scenes that tended to come with romance novels. “You shouldn’t need a real person to inspire you.” “Au contraire, my dear Ms. Heat. Every writer draws from their personal experiences. We see things through our own lenses, and the people who color our worlds become part of us. There’s a mystery writer, for example, who famously shadowed a detective squad in order to write about the police in Manhattan. This fellow became indispensable in solving the crimes the team encountered. They came to count on him, in fact, and he was a de facto part of their team. He ended up writing a book about the lead detective—one incredibly attractive woman, if I’m remembering correctly. She was his muse, just as you are mine.

Marriage. It's a double-edged sword, or at least it is for Nikki Heat. Her husband, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Jameson Rook, infuriates her in a way no one else in her entire life has ever done. He also takes her to heights of pleasure she has never experienced. But most of all, she loves the man with all her heart and she'd do anything to protect him. Which is just what she had done not so long ago. It had almost cost them everything.

I get author alerts when new items are added to the library catalog where I work (including ones that haven’t come out yet) and I got one today for a new Richard Castle book. I was completely unaware of it and I haven’t heard anything about it from the fandom.

Septic notes:
The non-canon egos are basically like a protection squad
(They will go to war for each other but won't share their chargers)
The canon egos are the same way, but they are more accepting of the other group than they are of them
Angus is closest with the NC!egos, and Jameson (he just wants someone who will listen to what he has to say instead of ignoring him)
He and Henrik haven't really known each other outside of recently (their parents ended up raising them separately)
(Angus in Rook Island, Henrik in Germany)
Angus and Marvin have both studied magic
For Angus, it's mostly the history of Rook Island's magic and the magic he did in the Skyrim video, for Marvin its mostly his magic, the Magic Circle (I think that's the name of the group Marvin's in) and I.R.I.S
Henrik is also studying I.R.I.S, but its the scientific side rather than magic
They live in the same house but they have a buddy system for the bedrooms (2-3 egos a room)
It's a manor/tower kind of thing where the bedrooms are all on the second floor
They also have separate houses for their respective families (Sparrow, Schneeplestein, Brody) either somewhere else on the island or an entirely different island (like Rook Island)
Henrik will sometimes use Angus' journal to further his research (mostly to generate questions for him to answer)
The other egos are big fans of Angus' show and have watched every single episode
(The show is on their version of Natural Geographic which is doing reruns of the first ten episodes and is running the newest 13 episodes)
The team made a season 2 with 14 episodes (they are currently making the last episode) that takes place on an island called Anetalsma (or Talsma for short)
I feel like at some point Angus would need a wheelchair considering how dangerous his job is (maybe it happens in Talsma), he could also develop a respiratory problem while he's there too
Actually, since a buffalo (or two) attack him in the crocodile episode, he could've developed those problems from that
(It seems like a logical thought to me)
Talsma is snowy so the team could do a skiing video in their free time
Jackie and Chase do parkour together (because of course they do)
Jameson is from the present day, he just likes dressing fancy (he is still mute though)
Chase's and Henrik's kids hang out often (Angus' have been thrown into the mix, poor Amelia)
An alternative to Anti being the physical manifestation of Angus' vengeful feelings, is Anti possessing him (or them sharing a body in another way) but because Anti is the manifestation of these feelings, I feel like he should be able to possess him anyway
Occupation-wise, the egos basically have the same jobs they do in canon, both fixed (doctor) and variable salaries (the survival hunter job)
(Angus basically gets paid the amount on the contract, which usually isn't a lot, so he ends up selling bits of the animals to make vastly higher amounts of money)
Update: that last point is pretty much canon
As for some, like Jameson who doesn't have a canon job, I'm just putting them somewhere that loosely fits them as a character
Jameson- pub/bed and breakfast owner
Bing- research, analysis, or marketing
Chase- cashier or streamer (I'm being more accurate with Chase because he's already a YouTuber so why not stream too? He also wants to make money when he's not streaming so why not be a cashier)
Marvin- fashion consultant/designer (who do you think makes his costumes? this is paired with his magician work so it's like a side job)
Jackie- software developer (he makes his own superhero equipment, again this is paired with his hero work as a side job)
Mack (maintenance Jack, he's from fan games that I don't quite remember the names of)- maintenance and repair (for what I don't know, maybe Jackie's stuff and other things the egos need)
Henrik's last name is actually his first wife's maiden name (he didn't want to be a Burke anymore so he changed his last name when they got married, she later died and he kept it in honor of her, and when he and Judaline got married he kept it again, which Judaline was ok with)
If one of the other egos asks why the brothers changed their original last name, they just get a backhanded response like "wouldn't you?" (Angus' go to) or "I don't know Brody, why'd you change yours?" (Henrik's go to)
Jameson's pub received an email from Gavin about a proposition to put one of Gavin's casinos (which still needs a name) in the pub, it'll be in a separate area away from the alcohol (which will be sold separately and isn't allowed in the casino)
Jameson will only sell people alcohol if they have food first (this is so the alcohol is absorbed by the food, decreasing the amount in the system), there are no mixing drinks (drinking one type of alcohol and then deciding to drink another kind) either
(It isn't an Ego Island law, it's just the pub's policy)
