“ALTERED TRANSLATION”

Chicago artist James Jankowiak creates “abstract paintings that explore color, simple form, and visual rhythm.” In 2017 Jankowiak prepared for a show at @CornerChicago Gallery, located in the site of 1905 Polish grocery store at Drake and Milwaukee Avenues in Chicago, by creating this mural on the building. Keeping the spirit of another mural that used to occupy this space Jankowiak was committed to using butterflies, representing “migration, development, transformation, life, and death.” In addition to creating his own art Jankowiak has long been committed to teaching Chicago youth through local arts organizations and in hiring some assistants to help him on this project he was able to bring together some of his previous students from low-income neighborhoods where art opportunities are limited.  @jamesjankowiak

I started this one when fears of hurricane Dorian chased me out of Miami a few months ago. Came back to it to complete during this quarantine. I don’t have a title for it. I’ve been focused on black and white imagery, using grayscale gradients to direct my composition in a less geometric but more organic visual effect. Both the night sky and storm clouds have been a back and forth “representational” resource. I knew 2020 would be like walking into a dark, violent summer storm when I started this series, who knew we’d be where we are now though. A projected 100,000 a 200,000 deaths, seniors dying alone in overcrowded hospitals, healthy family members dropping off the sick without ever knowing if they’ll ever see one another again. It’s why it’s so important we stay in place and #stayinside . On the positive side, I’m grateful to announce I was chosen to be the recipient of an individual artist grant to support this body of work and my upcoming solo exhibition @boundarychicagospace this June, where hopefully we had flattened the curve and are able to see each other in person .
