Indian Government Launches Operation Kaveri in Sudan to Rescue Stranded Indians
Tumblr media
Sudan is facing a threatening situation in its regions because of deadly fighting between the paramilitary group and the country’s army, which has already crossed 11 days, leaving at least 400 people dead. India has launched Operation Kaveri in its efforts to rescue and evacuate Indians from Sudan. 500 nationals have already taken to Port Sudan after S Jaishankar, the External Affairs Ministers Okayed the operation, which is underway now.
Throughout Sudan, the government of India is focusing on safely transporting more than 3,000 Indian citizens from the affected regions. On Sunday to evacuate the stranded Indians, India placed a couple of IAF C-130J transport aircraft in Jeddah, a city in Saudi Arabia. Also, at Port Sudan, it has positioned INS Sumedha, a naval ship for contingency.
The announcement for the evacuation operation by Jaishankar came after MEA (Ministry of External Affairs) conveyed that preparations for contingency are in place to bring the Indians from Sudan. However, it will purely depend on how the security situation is to confirm the movement on the ground. V Muraleedharan, the Union Minister of State for External Affairs will monitor the evacuation mission. Various partner countries of India will coordinate with the nation to ensure the safe movement of stranded Indians who wish to be taken out from Sudan.
The reason for naming the rescue mission as Operation Kaveri has immense importance. Kaveri is one of the Indian rivers that is highly revered. And it flows through Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, both are southern states. People of these regions worship the Goddess Kaveriamma and consider it sacred. As the rivers do not adhere to any barriers and reach their destinations, just like a mother who does everything to get her child back to safety, the mission has been named Operation Kaveri by the Modi government.
MEA and the Sudanese authorities, and the Indian embassy in Sudan are in close connection to keep updated with the UAE, UN, US, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, among others. Due to fierce fighting in different locations in Khartoum, the capital of the country, the situation is still volatile in Sudan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday provided preparatory directions and contingency plans for the evacuation of Indians from Sudan. Also, Jaishankar, the last week had spoken to the counterparts in the UAE, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia about the ground situation in Sudan.
All this was with the intent to bring back the Indians safely to India. Discussion about the situation in Sudan was also done with Antonio Guterres, UN Secretary-General. France has also helped to evacuate 5 Indians with citizens of other 27 nations as a part of their rescue mission from Sudan. A total of 338 people from 28 countries along with that India were safely evacuated by the French contingency group from Sudan.
And the French operations for evacuation are already ongoing. If you wish to reach out to the MEA control room in Sudan for Indians, you can contact the toll-free number 1800 11 8797. GEORGETOWN: India and Guyana are forging a partnership that is fit for the purpose of the contemporary era, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said while addressing the Indian community here. Jaishankar, who is on his first visit to Guyana, also apprised the Indian community of his discussions with the Guyanese leadership and the two countries' common resolve to upgrade the level of their partnership. "Delighted to interact with the Indian community today evening in Guyana. Thank Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo and Speaker Manzoor Nadir for joining us. Conveyed that we are forging a partnership that is fit for purpose for the contemporary era," he tweeted after addressing the diaspora on Sunday. Earlier in the day, he met Guyanese service officers who had undergone training in India. Jaishankar also joined President of Guyana Irfaan Ali at the commissioning of the India-made ferry MV MA Lisha. "MA Lisha means friendship. The ferry made by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers in Kolkata is its practical expression. This ferry would significantly enhance connectivity within Guyana. It will provide mobility and economic opportunities for distant hinterlands," he said. "Visited the evocative monument to Indian arrival in Berbice, Guyana. Shared my admiration of their endeavours and successes with the diaspora. Thank Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Charles Ramson Jr. for joining," he said in another tweet. Jaishankar paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at his memorial and planted a tree for the India-Guyana friendship. He said Gandhiji's message for climate consciousness was universal and timeless. Jaishankar also joined the diaspora at the Ram Krishna Dharmik Mandir here for morning prayers and thanked Minister of Human Services Vindhya Vasini Persaud for participating in it. "So glad to see how traditions, heritage and customs are being maintained," he said. Jaishankar co-chaired the 4th India-CARICOM ministerial meeting with his Jamaican counterpart Kaminaj Smith in Georgetown on Friday. He met Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at the UN headquarters in New York on Thursday before embarking on a nine-day trip to Guyana, Panama, Colombia and the Dominican Republic on Friday, his first visit as the external affairs minister to these Latin American countries and the Caribbean.

"Old, rich and dangerous..." Jaishankar takes on George Soros
"I may be naive, but I expect a democratic revival in India," Soros said in his remarks delivered at the 2023 Munich Security Conference.
Tumblr media
SYDNEY: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday termed billionaire investor George Soros as an "old, rich opinionated person" who still thinks that his views should determine how the entire world works.
Addressing a session with Australian Minister Chris Brown at the Raisina@Sydney Dialogue , Jaishankar said,"Mr Soros is an old, rich opinionated person sitting in New York who still thinks that his views should determine how the entire world works...such people actually invest resources in shaping narratives."
"People like him think an election is good if the person they want to see, wins and if the election throws up a different outcome then they will say it is a flawed democracy and the beauty is that all this is done under the pretence of advocacy of open society," the external affairs minister said.
Soros had in his remarks at the Munich Security Conference this Thursday said, "Adani is accused of stock manipulation and his stock collapsed like a house of cards. Modi is silent on the subject, but he will have to answer questions from foreign investors and in Parliament."
Terming Modi and Adani as "close allies," whose "fate is intertwined", the 92-year-old billionaire investor said, "This will significantly weaken Modi's stranglehold on India's federal government and open the door to push for much-needed institutional reforms." "I may be naive, but I expect a democratic revival in India," Soros said in his remarks delivered at the 2023 Munich Security Conference.
In Sydney, Jaishankar today said, "When I look at my own democracy, I've today a voter turnout, which is unprecedented, electoral outcomes which are decisive, electoral process which is not questioned. We're not one of those countries where after elections, somebody goes to arbitrate in court."
"Mr Soros said India is a democratic country but he doesn't think the Prime minister of India is a democrat. He earlier accused us of planning to strip millions Muslims of their citizenship which of course didn't happen, it was a ridiculous suggestion," the external affairs minister said.
Globalisation, Jaishankar said, allows seamless opportunities but also allows narratives to be shaped, money to come in, and organisations to get about their agenda.
"All this is done under the pretence of advocacy of open society of transparency, etc," he said.
Hitting out at Soros' comments, Jaishankar said, "If you do this kind of scaremongering...millions of people will be deprived of citizenship. It actually does real damage to the societal fabric because somebody out there believes you. You create that kind of fear psychosis."
Meanwhile, BJP lashed out over Soros' comments. Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, Union Minister of Women and Child Development Smriti Irani on Friday slammed Soros said that the man who broke the Bank of England and a man, who is designated as an economic war criminal, has now expressed his desire to break the Indian democracy.
She added that Soros wants a government that is pliable to his needs for making his nefarious plans successful.
"It is evident from his statements that he has pronounced funding over one billion dollars to target leaders like PM Modi. This is significant," The Minister said during the conference. She said, "Those who support Soros need to know that democracy has prevailed in India and continues to do so and as a party worker of the BJP, I can say that these designs to weaken Indian democracy will be met by the might of India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi."

US is now the top destination for refined petroleum products made from refined Russian crude. According to ministry of commerce, US imported more than half a billion dollars worth of oil products made in India. For the better part of last year, western countries led by US continued to put pressure on India to decrease its Russian crude imports. India however refused to budge and continued to buy cheap Russian crude. It has now emerged that while on one hand US and Europe were criticising India over its Russian crude import, on the other they were buying petroleum products made from refined Russian crude from India in huge quantities.
