i actually enjoyed a lot of twn s3 but i see it repeated fairly often that it followed the books fairly closely (or at least more closely than s2) but listen. having freshly reread time of contempt, in my opinion, s3 somehow followed the books LESS than other seasons.

s1 and s2 were both often working with original content in between book canon scenes. but s3, as much as it did seem to go beat for beat following time of contempt's plot... somehow ends up changing almost every single plot point in some way.

yennefer travels with ciri and geralt together. geralt is pissed at yennefer and doesn't speak to her for a whole year. ciri wounds (maybe kills?) elves at shaerrawedd. yennefer calls ciri "ugly one" without the follow up context of their "you're already pretty" convo. geography is ?? travel is ?? the politics is flattened out to redania vs nilfgaard. the scoia'tael conflict is flattened out. aplegatt's story gets repurposed with none of the actual consequences that made that story in the books have an emotional impact because there is none of the same geopolitical plot.

tissaia stands with and frees vilgefortz out of love for him instead of standing against both the genocide and warfare of the northern kings and the imperialism of nilfgaard. the coup plot seems to be a last minute decision by philippa based on what?? who knows!! the last vilgefortz joins emhyr in nilfgaard??? yennefer calls the conclave and heads up the lodge????

so yes, it pulls some lines and scenes directly from the books and nods to them fairly often but in no way was s3 a closer or more faithful adaptation of the books than s2. it truly, fully misses something huge in almost every story beat.

one of the things that particularly pisses me off about art discussions, either in how nowadays everything has to aim for more and more realism in art styles and even live action to be seen as "real art", and in dismissing more abstract styles of artwork as not "real art" and having no inherent worth, is that they explicitly do not consider realism an art style either. to them, realism is just a given of "good" art, not chosen but rather just default. which i hate, because you CAN pick realism as an intentional style and a purposeful choice to suit a narrative, and all this results in is no one noticing or understanding why you made that choice or why that choice works better than any other possible choice to tell the story you want to tell.

#all the care guide says is 'biomass' #like i like realism because i have a heavy focus on anatomy as a theme #on the body as something innately complex and with a lot of feelings to have about it in all its messy ugly states #im interested in all the complex ways the body intersects with its environment and with culture and with other people #as the outside as contrasting the inside or serving as a strange reflection of it #like im kind of going for a lot of merfolk designs to not be particularly visually different from each other #they have incredibly similar silhouettes and thats on purpose #i want all of their differences and visual traits to be things that they would find more prominent #but we would struggle to pick apart without learning about them deeper and committing these to knowledge #because thats so much been my experience with trying to tell different individuals of the same species of wild animal apart #and i want to use that as a lens to then discuss how humans would then interact with an entirely different sapient species #and what happens when you are someone who experiences that #of someone else not recognizing you as individuals like you do each other #of them not even trying to adapt or learn your differences #what damage it does when this happens to you #and how much the world opens up when someone actually does learn these little differences #but of course #no one else recognizes this because everyone just thinks realism is the default #realism cannot be a purposeful choice done for a reason #realism is just What You Are Supposed To Do and Unevocative Of Deeper Meaning

Hi Hello it’s Doodle/Ramble time, featuring some incredibly messy mission suit concepts

I’m gonna ramble So Much under the cut but basic gist, I like the idea of each Rat having their own unique suit with gear that’s specifically catered to their strengths

Left to right, let’s start with Adam. His suit is armored with steel, which is... well it’s really damn heavy. And since Adam’s primary ability is super strength, the extra weight has no detriment to him, only providing better defense and a meaner offense. The armor on his chest is segmented so he can move around proper, and Adam of course loves the whole Spartan plate he’s got going on. The vest/sleeves look was ripped straight from the S2 suit, just with red sleeves instead to draw attention to the arms

Since Chase’s abilities aren’t as physical, his suit’s pretty low key. His armor is light to accommodate his fighting style, and his force field covers it when the situation calls. The headphones are noise-cancelling for the sake of his senses, which he can calibrate wirelessly via his bionics. I actually based his design off of Bree’s S2 suit lmao, just made it less... catsuity, and added some extra color and accessories

All of Bree’s abilities lean into Spying and Scouting, so her suit’s the most streamlined. It leans the closest to the S1 suit, since it basically had racing stripes. Added a visor and hood that can be pulled up when she’s running or sneaking. There’d probably be some extra collar fabric for a mouth cover too, honestly. I literally ripped off the Long Fall Boots from Portal 'cause they are one of my favorite pieces of sci-fi bullshit ever. The blue soles are meant to indicate some sorta energy field? Thing? That acts as shock absorption and sound dampening

And 2 bonus versions: This almost grey scale just ‘cause I like those sorts of palettes + I guess it’s kinda Bionic Academy colors

And one that’s color coded. I honestly love this one but it also kinda makes them look like power rangers so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Not stress sometimes. Things can be messy. It's fun #Anyway #Some things: Could've given Adam a belt and could've swapped the upper arm bands on Chase for colored soles #I stand by the idea that heels look awesome and if you can find a reason to make them work Go For It. Hence Bree's knock-off portal shoes #It's complete bullshit that they'd be any better than her canon boots BUT you add some fun sci-fi reasoning and bam it's good to go #I will say a little bonus for those who care: certain details of Bree's overlap with some things planned for Lost In Transition :)
