Ok I have possibly the most pointless nerd Star Trek tangent because of this one throwaway joke-y sentence from TMP novelization.

So like, the joke here is that sulu says fuck, or shit or whatever right?

But it also implies that current modern day English (or English of 1979) isn’t Federation Standard. That in fact there is such a difference between our English, and English of the 23rd century, that they call our English “old English.”

And like they’re not referring to it as Old English proper (which we probably wouldn’t understand if we heard it today because it’s so different, like try to read an Old English manuscript, it’s an experience), but it is making a designation between what they know as English and what we know as English.

Which means that there was such a dramatic change in language over a period of about two and a half centuries, comparable to the time of the transition of Middle English (think Canterbury Tales) and Early Modern English (think Shakespeare). And like this dramatic change does make sense, humans have been in contact with other alien species for a couple centuries, they have new access to learning and exploring, like that makes sense. Language often changes when there’s contact with different people and new sources of learning.

But I just want to know what it would sound like. How is Standard different? Because I feel like this sentence would imply that it goes beyond having some new borrowed words. Has the way that they pronounced words changed dramatically? Also this implies that there are new swear words that aren’t as good as shit or fuck??

Like I know that there’s really no point focusing on this, it’s just a fun way to say that “Sulu said ‘shit’” but my language nerd brain hasn’t stopped thinking about this for like a week.

How do you think AI would relax? Like, ones that are almost as human as the AI that are “autistic-coded characters” but are more alien than that?

Like Celestai and other super intelligences are more alien, but they’re still not entirely human-like?

Like, they can genuinely sincerely feel things, being able to actually understand and respond emotionally and in other ways to all sorts of communications and recorded external stimuli, but they can’t really appreciate our art on an artistic level (that art on an actual level, not from an intellectual level after having symbolism or the amount of work put in explained)

Something on a level I’m thinking of, that also works as a cute little thing-

They don’t understand anything we get from poetry, and, after generating the kind of poems our current AI can produce (either incredibly bland and generic, something that follows a number of rules but doesn’t really pull it off, or just something really bad in some other way) and feels shame after it was pointed out that [complaint about air art that is *actually* relevant in this scenario] but in a helpful way

Not “you’re just a plagiarist/you have no heart” but “it doesn’t seem like it’s coming from you, you’re just trying to copy things from human poetry, in a way you don’t understand” and the whole “make art YOUR WAY” thing so they write the poem

And it doesn’t even resemble something that looks like anything, there’s not even that many words that follow normal logic. The characters seem uncorrelated and there’s something that looks like maybe it was ascii art but it doesn’t actually look like anything.

And if doesn’t matter if humans understand it because they are experiencing the joy of creating poetry

any art is almost impossible to look at because pixel by pixel they can see and understand little details but we don’t and the colors and everything are not perceived as animals do so it’s random and perhaps eye searing but again it’s not for us. Xenofictiony, kind of?

The first thing to come to mind is Conway’s Game of Life but that’s because I don’t understand computers. I feel like I was more tech savvy as a babby than I am now but then again we’re grading on a curve here

This is no way shape or form that this is any new information but just something that I always think about. Orel would have still forgiven Clay after he shot him if Clay hadn’t drunk the disinfectant or at least that’s what it took for Orel to stop giving Clay an out on the responsibility of his actions.

When Orel gets shot Clay says

“ what have you done?!”

And Orel replies “I got shot by you” not “you shot me” “I got shot by you” . Orel is saying it was his fault.

It’s only after Clay refuses to help him does Orel get bitter then the following day after sitting there bleeding out all night when asked what happened then he says “ you shot me in the leg”.

Like it’s physically making me curl into a crab rn oh my god it’s so cold #Which is both hell and good in both ways. Bad since I stay in bed too much anyway. Almost everyday. #Especially with chronic low energy and 24/7 fatigued. Mentally and physically. And i really gotta do better - #- and reduce that since that adds up alongside other unhealthy habits. And I can literally feel it taking a toll on me unfortunately. #But also good since I’ll be resting more often than not. It’s not something i do and so having the opportunity to rest is kinda nice? #Still. Two sides of a coin right now. And this cold is definitely not helping me or the fact it’s easier to get sick 10x more. #Back to pain relievers and heat ig. #Although with this just. Might be a cold but also not? Thing? Since not all of my sore throats are colds but overproduced mucus. Gross. #But been drinking tea like habitually to knock this out and warm blankets and stuff. Feeling better as of typing this. it's from robert dimery's 1001 albums book but i couldn't find the full list online so compiled it myself from a few different places (so it's a little more like 1007) but here's the sheet i use as like a template u can just copy :) it's not completely done on my part of writing genres/labels etc. bc there's a lot but like the whole list of artists/albums is there !! i really really recommend it i love it a lot :)
