23 👀? (if ur feeling up to it ofc 💖)
23. "Just a little longer."
(oh i was hoping i could do a lil cfdau for one of these)
-
January 1998
Robin's house is cold.
It's a nice place. It really is. It has the coziness of her place with Steve, with Robin's favorite blankets and too many couch pillows and the lamps always on instead of the overhead lights. There are touches of her here that didn't shine through as much in her old apartment. More photos on the walls, more vinyls piled on the shelves, way more candles. A stack of comics that Steve has certainly teased her about--obscure titles that Nancy suspects are Will's influence, given how close he and Robin have gotten lately.
It's nice. It's so Robin, so of course it is. But it's also cold.
It doesn't help that the winter has been bitter so far. They've gotten more ice than snow. The wind has been brutal, the sky pale and sunless. Every day since Christmas has been in the single digits.
They go out anyway, holding hands while they wait for coffee or meet for dinner. Paparazzi photos keep showing up of the two of them, and though no one ever dares to say something for certain--girlfriend seems to be a dirty word to the press--everybody loves to speculate.
It's not just the press, though. Nancy had a meeting scheduled over dinner just last night. It had been a big deal, with big names she'd been looking forward to potentially working with. An assistant had called her last minute to cancel. There's no way to know for sure why, but one look at Robin when Nancy had told her confirmed that they were thinking the same thing.
Robin had offered to take her out, to take care for her, to do anything she could to cheer Nancy up. They'd ended up curling up in Robin's bed, huddled beneath the heavy comforter, Robin's arms strong and warm around her.
They're there still, because even though the morning is half gone, the house is so damn cold, and the world beyond it is even colder. Nancy burrows further into Robin's embrace, pressing her cold nose against Robin's warm collarbone, and pretends like she can weather the winter if she just stays here forever.
"I'll make us breakfast," Robin offers, though she makes no move to dislodge Nancy and get up. Nancy makes a soft sound, something pathetically akin to a whimper, and digs her fingers into Robin's sleep shirt to keep her in place.
Robin's sigh is soft, understanding, but she tries again. "And coffee. Warm coffee, Nance."
Robin knows exactly how she takes her coffee, makes it so perfectly that Nancy will sometimes drag her feet in the mornings just so Robin will make it for her. Robin sees through her, of course, but she always presses the mug into Nancy's hands with a smile and a kiss on the cheek, so Nancy supposes she doesn't mind.
It's almost tempting, but it's not enough to make her want to move. So she doesn't. She lies there, eyes closed, not even trying to summon the energy to shake away the hollowness that has been in her chest since last night.
Robin rubs her hand up and down Nancy's back. "I'm sorry, Nance. I really am."
That makes her stir. She lifts her head to press against Robin's neck instead.
"Not your fault," she says, quiet but firm. She presses her lips against Robin's skin, just as soft, just as certain. Robin sighs again.
"It still sucks, though."
Nancy hums in response. Hence the moping in bed.
"But we both have the day off," Robin continues. "We can do whatever we want."
"Don't want to," she mumbles. She's distantly aware that she's pouting now, but she can't bring herself to care. Not when Robin is all she wants, and Robin is all she has, and Robin is the only person who really, truly understands.
"Nance..."
"Can we just--can we stay here?" Nancy pulls back to look up at her pleadingly--desperate, suddenly, to cling to this moment beneath the covers, this one chance to shut out the chill of the world. "Just a little longer?"
She's never had to ask, though. Not really. Robin's eyes are soft when she nods. She pulls gently on Nancy, and Nancy rises enough to kiss her softly, slowly, with all the warm, steadying assurance she's still getting used to having.
"We can stay as long as you like," Robin whispers when they part. Nancy hums again and settles back against her. Her fingers come up to comb lazily through Robin's hair.
"Will you still make breakfast when we get up?"
Robin smiles. "I'm sure I can be convinced."

timetravel steddie on Ao3 here, finished and posted weekly (POV Eddie, slow burn).
✨A Tarnished Copper Boy✨
Next
Prologue: Spring 1986
With a gasp, Eddie collides onto the thin mattress below him, blearily blinking up at the jagged portal pulsing above. The heavy vest around his torso absorbs most of the impact, but the sudden movement knocks the breath out of him as the jagged gashes in his thighs and neck pull painfully.
His skin is clammy and for one muddled moment, Eddie thinks his body is wet and that the red of the portal is the crimson lightning flashing through the Upside Down skies. But he sees a shift of movement above as Steve tugs on the rope made out of linen and Eddie’s disorientation steadies into a wash of relief: he’s made it out, alive and in the right side up.
“Help me grab him, we need to move so Steve can come through,” Nancy instructs, and Eddie shifts to see her and Robin bending to grasp him under the arms, even as Dustin hovers nervously nearby, wobbling on his injured leg. That’s right: the bats, and they’ve just kicked Vecna’s ass too, taking him down and saving the goddamn world.
Eddie grins loopily up at Robin, “We’re superheroes.”
She grins back, settling him against the couch with a grunt, “Damn straight.” Their high five is a bit wobbly, but it’ll do; almost in unison, they look up to see Steve dithering with the rope on the other side, still tugging on it with a distracted look.
“Hey dingus,” she yells, “Get a move on.”
Yes, move it, Eddie thinks more soberly, a sense of urgency rising at every moment that Steve delays. Vecna may be dead and banished to the realms of whatever hell he deserves, but Eddie’s not going to feel at peace until he has Steve safe and unharmed by his side. He needs to put his hands on him, just once to assure himself that this version of Steve is finally out of harm’s way.
Steve looks up sharply at Robin’s voice, shock rippling over his features as he stares back at them before suddenly breaking into a broad, relieved smile. Eagerly, he jumps high up onto the rope in an athletic display of his prowess.
“Oh, he’s definitely going to expect us to applaud that,” Robin snickers, the weariness about her body briefly easing as she enjoys her friend’s antics. Eddie’s lips twitch: Steve can be a bit of a show-off when it comes to flaunting his jock strength.
As if he can hear Eddie’s thoughts, Steve tilts his head up to look through the portal once more, hovering before touching the gate. His teeth flash in one final grin as he stretches to fall through the unnatural breach between worlds.
Yet the portal never claims him. The space above the mattress next to Eddie remains vacant and, as the three of them continue to stare up into the empty Upside Down trailer, all they can see is the dirty linen rope swaying absently above.
In an all too familiar blink of an eye, Steve has disappeared.
Robin visibly falters next to Eddie. “Where’d he go,” she asks in a small, bewildered voice.
Dustin’s eyes widen fearfully and his head snaps to Eddie, looking for confirmation. Eddie is unable to meet his gaze, jaw clenching as he focuses on that damned rope, its fading rhythm counting down every second that Steve has left like a cursed metronome.
“Steve?” Nancy calls, cupping her hands to her mouth as if he had simply fallen back to the floor and rolled away.
But Robin shakes her head and continues shaking it as Steve remains missing, “No, no, no. What happened? He was right there! Nancy,” she turns to the other girl desperately, “Is there some sort of transporter? Like beam me up, Scotty in the Upside Down?”
Nancy reaches her hands out to stop Robin’s wild gestures, pulling her shaking hands down. “It’s okay, we’ll find him,” she hastily attempts to reassure Robin. “It may be some weird interdimensional thing, maybe he came out through one of the other gates. He can’t have gone far,” Nancy reasons, “We’ll search for him.”
“Don’t bother,” Eddie rasps tiredly, the weariness in his bones weighed down by one long week of hell preceded by two unexplained years of time fuckery. Dustin’s eyes haven’t left Eddie’s face since Steve disappeared, but now Robin and Nancy’s gazes fly to him too.
“What do you know, Eddie?” Nancy asks cautiously, frowning. Spring Break has taught him that Nancy Wheeler doesn’t do well with not having all information on hand. Robin looks increasingly anxious, shifting on the balls of her feet even as she sporadically glances back up at the gate like Steve will reappear at any moment.
“Steve’s gone,” Eddie scrubs a hand down the filth covering his face, the ash of the Upside Down and blood from his injuries smearing into a nauseating mix. “He’s gone back in time,” he clarifies.
Robin makes a small, broken sound but Eddie can only look up at the gate, watching the pulsing crimson of the wide maw that started all this. “He’s gone back to me.”

20 Questions for fic writers:
Tagged by @cchapsticck
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
59, if you count the very old stuff I archived there. 39, if you only count the stuff I originally posted there.
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
194,755
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Recently, it's been all Stranger Things. If I start writing other fandoms again, tumblr will be the first to know.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Their Wedding Night (cowritten with @sharpbutsoft )
Adventures in Housekeeping
The Opposite of Love
The House Dick
Her Double Life
All but The Opposite of Love are part of A Bliss Like This
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I try to. I used to not, but I've gotten into some nice conversations with other authors who responded to my comments, so I decided to try it. And I'm a very small author (don't let the word/ count fool you; I've been posting fic online since the late 90s) so there aren't that many comments to reply to.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Probably that sin, through which I run. Though it's told backwards, so it might depend on what you consider the ending.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Any fic in A Bliss Like This. It's a guaranteed happiness series.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Never on AO3.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
I've written, but not published smut. I'm not good enough at it.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
I don't, really. Nothing wrong with crossovers, I'm just not usually inspired in that way.
I did work with a couple of friends once on a wild, universe hopping crossover that involved Sonic characters, Gundam Wing, Dragonball Z, The Old Man from Scene 24 (Holy Grail) and others with a friend that I think she posted somewhere. Probably fanfiction.net, but it was like 25 years ago (I am very old) and I'm a little scared of how awful it must have been so I'm not looking.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not to my knowledge.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Not that anyone's mentioned to me.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Not in the sense that we've blended our writing into a single story, but @sharpbutsoft and I built a 1920s AU together. Individual stories in A Bliss Like This are often hers or mine but they build off each other and all the major details are a joint endeavor.
14. What’s your all time favorite ship?
This is an impossible question.
I have noticed a preference for jock/nerd or similar such pairings. Where one half of the couple is "normal" or socially acceptable and the other half is very, very weird. But only when the relationship develops without either of them giving up that aspect of their personality. No makeovers!
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
A Nancy POV fic tentatively called 'Three Truths and No Lies' that I started between the two volumes of season four. Because there were all these "fruity four" fics and I thought Nancy would likely try to fix or at least find closure in her relationship with Jonathan as soon as he got to Hawkins, leading to her feeling a little left out of the Eddie and Stobin closeness.
Also a third part of Coming Out with a Purpose, where Robin and Steve come out to Joyce to test her reaction and give her the opportunity to learn from the mistakes she makes with them so that she doesn't fuck up when Will finally comes out.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Limited POVs. I think I'm decent at character voices, too, but I'm less confident there.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Actually writing words down (what do you mean just thinking about the fic doesn't make it exist?). The urge to edit while I write. Spelling. Plots.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I'm not good enough at it to really do it, unless the character speaking is not supposed to be fluent.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
That I published online? Fushigi Yuugi, as I recall. Maybe Gundam Wing. But as a kid I used to write Real Ghostbusters fic for my parents (they wanted to encourage my creativity). Mostly fleshed out (no pun intended) back stories for the ghosts.
20. Favorite fic you’ve written?
I'm still writing it. I'm gonna finish it, I swear.
Of what I've published, it's probably Her Double Life, because genderqueer drag queen Eddie of the 1920s is just so much fun. I have so many thoughts and feelings about her. So, so many.
No pressure tags for: @sharpbutsoft , @greenlikethesea, um, who else writes? If you do, and you want to answer these, please consider yourself tagged.

10, 12 and 29 for the A03 wrapped ask meme!
10. What work was the quickest to write? I Wish I Was The Moon. It's super short, less than 3k words. I think I wrote it in like 2 hours. I was in the middle of writing Entirely On Purpose which was very much in Robin's soft sweet pining POV and I got hit with an urge to write Nancy to write something VERY different than what I was working on. I really like this one. I think it packs a lot into not a lot of words.
12. How many WIP’s do you have in your docs for next year? I have 4 things started to some small degree. I'll hopefully finish one or two before the end of the month though. i also have to wrap up Bigfoot at some point. I might also do a Nancy Murders Santa thing but obvs that would want to be before december ends.
29. Favorite line/passage you wrote this year? I answered this once but I'll pick something else because uhhhh I wrote more than one good line hopefully? A lot of the things I like are from the end of stories and I feel weird posting them like it's a spoiler or something? But whatever. The tie monologue from Red&White... makes me so happy:
"I want to open the champagne, and I want to pour us each a glass. And I want to tell you that I like your tie."
"You already said that," Robin threw her hands up, begging for some kind of sense.
"And I'm going to say it again because I don't think I fully got my point across the first time," Nancy kept going, never breaking eye contact. "Or the second. I want to tell you I like your tie. And when you continue to act like you don't know what I'm telling you, I want to pull it. Your tie. Not hard. I want to take your tie, and pull it, just hard enough so that you understand that I am telling you that I want you to kiss me."

From the studio that brought you “I can’t find good Byler fics in the ao3 tag”, comes:
"The Definitive Byler fic rec list"
Literally no one asked for this but because I spent the majority of last year (...and 2019, and 2018...) reading byler fics and coping with life, I thought I’d make a list of some of my absolute favorites.
The other day I was basically starving for some byler fics and the angel @magicalfairy provided me with some of her faves so I thought I’d do the same, because I love reading, and I love all of these fics and I appreciate their writers💗 And fic writers in general, come on!
- This is a mix of long works and one-shots/short stories. - Everything is mostly fluff with a tad of angst and a lot of internalized homophobia conflict.  - Every fic is completed, except for the ones I mention that they are not. - I try my best to lay out the stories in a way that I won’t spoil you the plot but also warning you of some stuff you might don’t like. Either way, all of these fics are correctly tagged by their respective authors/owners, so read at your own risk. For better understanding, in between brackets I denote Rating, Words and quantity of Chapters. - I feel like I should clarify, none of these are narrated in the singular first person. None of that “And I told him...”, no.
Long fics
a dream always the same (T, 99k, 35 chapters) What happened in those few weeks between the Battle of Starcourt and the Byers leaving Hawkins. Literally a satisfying and very needed fill in of season three, with a good dose of Mike’s thoughts and conflict. Mike’s characterization is specially amazing in this one. The writing style is amazing and I know the author put everything into making it historically accurate, and it was really sweet. You probably read it, it’s by the amazing sevensided here on Tumblr🧡
Spring Break (T, 120k, 14/15 chapters) The slowburn of my dreams. Lots of internalized conflict and conflict with each other. Conflict within the Party (uhh kind of), conflict with Mike and Will. Byers family has moved and the kids are visiting! Chaos. Characterization is on point. Yeah, I know it’s unfinished, but the fourteenth chapter actually serves as a pretty nice ending.
This is where it starts (M, 148.8k, 24 chapters) Aged up characters. The Party is in college and Will disappears again, but now it’s different. Mike knows he didn’t vanish from thin air, and the discovery he and the Party end up making is pretty insane. Mystery solving/fantasy/third dimension, throw in a bit of D&D and Mike realizing some shit, and you get this marvelous fic. It’s a breath of fresh air. The world building is definitely one of the elements that stands out the most, because it’s very nicely described, it sounds like a dream and it’s completely immersive. Absolute gem of a fic.
there’s a Starman waiting in the sky (M, 30.6k, 8 chapters) Do I need to say anything? Will is out there living his best life and Mike realizes that wow, umm, maybe his best friend looks a bit too nice with that costume... and wait, is he getting horny? It’s actually really fun and sexy.
The Evening Speaks (T, 23k, 7 chapters) In where Mike is a late-night college radio host and Will is the art student that stays up till late to catch up with Wheeler on the Mic. They flirt through songs y’all, this one is really sweet.
heads or tails? (E, 24k, 3 chapters) Aged up characters. I know most people don’t enjoy sex in fics and with specific characters but this one is insanely well written. It’s a slowburn that commits to the tension and with every word you are grasping and anticipating their next move. I think you can find the author here on Tumblr as yousaidyes🧡
The Man of Average (M, 56.7k, 5/? chapters) Aged up characters. No but you don’t understand, the writing here is absolute gourmet. The story is exciting as well, it’s super interesting. Weirdly enough, for being very aged up characters, they are well characterized but they don’t feel like teenagers. They are naturally Mike and Will. The author really captured Mike and Will’s essence. I know, it’s unfinished and it’s updated very rarely, but this is the typical fic you can’t believe someone just posted on the internet for free. I will say though, I think it’s definitely not for everyone. Read at your own risk.
Heartstrings (E, 82.8k, 24/? chapters) Aged up characters. By the same author of The Man of Average. A collection of memories, the road to Mike and Will’s happy ever after. And fucking hell!!!!! You’ll cry and get angry, you’ll cheer for them, then you’ll want to crash their faces together because god dammit you love each other!!! But yeah, same thing here. The writing and the way the story is laid out as a nonlinear narrative is brilliant. And I also think this is one of the best Will versions I’ve read. The author might as well be the og creator of this two characters tbh. You can find the author here as mylesimeblr🧡
Sinners behind the walls (T, 1.5k, 1/1) And because I can’t stop recommending this author, a little thing of Mike tormenting himself but also being too deeply committed to Will.
The Red Envelope series (T/E, 167K, two completed works) Something happens that Will thought was impossible and from there, pure drama and romance. Anything by this author has the potential to become your absolute favorite fic, but this series in particular is amazing. I doubt that any of you haven’t read this, but it doesn’t hurt to put it in this list. I’m pretty sure the author is serendipitous-magic on Tumblr🧡
A New Fight series (T, 91k, two completed works, one WIP) And finally the Star Wars AU that we all needed. But this isn’t your typical “Mike is Han”, “Will is Leia” and “El is Luke”, it’s way more interesting than that, and the author has appropriated the Star Wars world like no other. I’ll admit I’m not a 100% fluent in SW lore but this is amazing to me either way. This author is also on Tumblr, tea-for-one-please🧡
- Yes, most of these are (if not all), in a way, canon compliant/canonverse/canon continuation into fanon. (In a way)
One-shots and short stories
Sundae for Two, Please (G, 4.8k) Steve being the supportive friend and older brother these kids collectively need. (not Jonathan erasure, we love him). Steve is very sweet himself, and this little cute thing through his POV is gorgeous. Yes, it’s byler.
Backstage (T, 10k, 2/2) Jonathan, you forgot to mention to Will how hot your new band’s guitarist is, dude. Now he’s hyperventilating and weirdly flirting with him in the corner. Background Stonathan because why not.
102 Peach Street (G, 3.8k) Established relationship, but not only that, they are married :’’))) PURE fluff. Extreme fluffiness. Diabetes.
sweatshirts and bottled up feelings (T, 3.2k) Or, Mike thinks that the sweatshirt Will wears looks insanely good on him. And kitchens are for lovers.
kiss it better (T, 16.3k) Basically one of the best character studies of a few precise moments of Mike and Will’s relationship and feelings.
will wonders ever cease (T, 11.3k) #i ship will and happiness. Omfg what a beautiful piece of fanfic. Will centric, this kid really deserves all the good in the world.
The Calm After the Storm (T, 1.6k) Tooth rotting fluff, boyfriends in love. Boyfriends being lazy, cuddling, love words, kisses. Boys loving each other’s company... Basically, Mike and Will in their element. What more can you ask for?
neither of us ready to let go (T, 4.8k) That scene from season three, but a bit of a fix it.
Still in love (G, 1k) Domestic, married life au fluff. Y’all, I’m a sucker for established Byler, even if I can’t find many fics with it. But this is very sweet. It takes place in 2020, but I don’t think there are any mentions of the COVID-19 crisis that I remember.
I Nver Find Out ‘Til I’m Head Over Heels (G, 12.5K) Classic 5+1 fic. If you haven’t read it, where have you been? This is your moment. In where Mike keeps inviting Will to the school dances and Will thinks it’s just a joke until he realizes it’s not.
Before You’re Gone (T, 5.9k) Will is leaving Hawkins and Mike thinks this is a great moment for a confession. This one I discovered last friday, thank you friend @magicalfairy 💗
You’re weird Wheeler (M, 4.5k) Mike unintentionally starts a tradition of going to each other to talk about their sexual encounters just after they finish. Will keeps getting more explicit with the details he shares, and he makes his best friend interested. This one is really fun y’all.
Out-Of-Town Friends (N/R, 4.6K) It’s not rated. I haven’t re- read it but I’d say it would probably fall in a T rating. So cute!! Will has new friends and sneaks off every friday and the Party doesn’t know where he is going, so Mike decides to follow him and is surprised.
Snowed Under (G, 1.3k) By the same author of The New Fight series. Mike is spending christmas by himself in college because a snowstorm hits Chicago and Nancy can’t drive to see him, but then he has a surprise visitor. Ahhh just a lil sweet holiday fic. Super cute.
you love me anyway series (T, 7.1k, three completed works) Literally just the cutest thing ever. Established Byler. Will loves to take pictures and he loves taking pictures of Mike. It’s adorable.
you wanna be friends forever (i can think of something better) (T, 9k) This one is so amazing. So. Amazing. From Will’s POV, my kid deserves the world and he gets it.
okay not to be okay (T, 4.9k) Mike is a bit sad but then everything is okay.
can’t hold out forever (G, 18.4k) Y’all!!!!! 5+1 sweetness. Mike has been falling in love since kindergarten. And it’s long af, you’ll enjoy it.
even if it takes forever (G, 1.3k) College short AU, they miss each other, they love each other, they promise all to each other. It is sappy y’all.
clear as day (N/R, 18.4K, 4 chapters) It’s not rated, but I’d say it falls in the T category. Strangers to friends to lovers. And also, everyone is pretty gay; we have our dynamic trio Mike, Max and El as disaster lesbians (and gay). Will works at the library and he is also gay. Lucas and Dustin and Will are the best friends we needed. It’s very sweet and the Party is kind of formed here!
I went overboard with the one-shots, so you must have realized how much I love long one-shots and I favor them over long works lmao but they are all amazing!!! If it’s on this list, I probably read it at 2 am, sobbing in my bed. So. Hope you enjoy it☺️🧡
