Do you want to help people in countries with censored internet?
Install the Snowflake browser extension to help people access the uncensored internet by using your computer's signature! I'm 95% sure there's one for Firefox too, and it comes bundled in with Brave-just go into the settings and turn it on! All you have to do is have a working PC with internet access and live in a country with low internet censorship. Brave even has an option to let it do it's thing even when you don't have the browser open, so that you can be doing this literally as long as your computer is on. Would not recommend using it on Opera though, as Opera is Chinese-owned and is thus not something you should ever have on your computer.

the kids on TikTok are becomingbin laden defenders because they read his “letter to the USA” where he says some things that are truly basic facts about American foreign policy, like “we have military bases in the Middle East” and are like “hang on, he made some good points” and i cannot emphasize enough that we truly do not have to hand it to isis (nearly literally, in this case!) just because you just learned a fact about American foreign policy you do not like

can we please stop with the conspiracy that the government wants to ban tiktok because of pro-palestine content
do you realize how close that sounds to accusations of "zionists controlling the media" (i don't care how you frame it, it's an antisemitic conspiracy theory, please stop)
the us has wanted to ban tiktok for years because the company that owns it is chinese. they literally would let things go on as usual if they sell tiktok to an american company. that's it.
the primary driver is racism, not a conspiracy to shut down activism

I love letting other people watch things first and then give feedback about it so I can gauge whether or not I want to spend time on it. Truly could not give fewer fucks about spoilers. If the story is good I will still have a fantastic time.
#avatar the last airbender#it's really not looking like it's worth it#like it's high production value#but the complaints are about things that are really dealbreakers to me#they broke the plot and character development in bad ways that make them very different characters and events#the clips i've seen are visually stunning but have a marvelesque feeling of lackluster meaningless platitudes#oh yes we should definitely fight the evil and resist it and save the weak by getting stronger!#it's like someone watched/read some shonen or generic YA dystopian action and missed the entire point#maybe altogether it would be better but the way suki and sokka move in their training clips lacks weight#like they do not move like they know how to fight#no offense to the actors but i think this show really needed heavy martial arts training for all involved#and maybe they got it but they needed to really internalize the weight shifts and the way you put force behind strikes#that and seeing all the breakdowns of sokka and aangs modified arca is just disheartening#anyhow#on the other hand#heaven officals blessing#has been very worth#also i wish i could watch the donghua for#grandmaster of demonic cultivation#but i need to download the chinese spyware app or pay extra extra money on youtube to sub to the tencent channel#i think i am nust fond of the stuff mxtx writes#i should learn mandarin to read the og#i wonder if i would talk like a fanfic if i did that#like someone would hear it and be like i Know where you learned that and i sham't say it#mo xiang tong xiu

whatre your thoughts on tiktok considering its mostly spyware and nobody believes me ☹️
okay so tiktok isn't anymore "mostly spyware" than facebook or google and i have yet to hear a single justification for why tiktok is any different that isn't just sinophobia repackaged into smart sounding political and technological arguments. which isn't to say that's great, but like just please don't fall for weird sinophobic or US nationalist arguments.
also my extremely hot take is that if we're living in a world where we can at best pick between which government is spying on me i'd in a lot of cases rather pick the government that doesn't have any impact in my jurisdiction, being watched by the chinese government will forever impact me less than being watched by the US or any european government.
absolutely not at all a pro big platforms or pro government surveillance take, just like a bit of a relative view on things.

Like I don't have tiktok for a variety of reasons but to say "don't have CHINESE Spyware on your phone" as if that's like a legit concern when the American government spies on you ALL THE TIME (and is more of a direct threat to you as an American citizen and even abroad) like what are they gonna do with your data in China that they aren't doing 10x as much in the US with the patriot act. Get a VPN all that jazz if you're scared but the US is more of an immediate threat than the ccp, even if it were true.

here's the thing
tiktok is a net evil and I fully believe that it's selling user data or giving it to the chinese government but that's barely any different from what facebook and twitter do literally every day, they're just selling it to advertisers. american social media is barely distinguishable from spyware as it is. if the american government wants to ban tiktok, why are they not also buckling down on twitter, facebook, hell, even tumblr probably sells your data as exemplified by the recent ai shit. facebook has literally been in settlements over selling user data to steve bannon's people to undermine the 2016 election. twitter is run by an egomaniac who Just Asks Questions about jewish people and the trans community, you want me to believe he's not happy to sell user data to horrible people?
they can say it's about security and user info selling but that's basically a cover. it's a proxy for what's basically become a cold war with china (not that the original cold war ever REALLY ended, let's be fair -- just changed modes). and it could set a bad precedent for the country's ability to crack down on shit in the way china and other authoritarian regimes already do, and with trump 2024 looming and looking more likely by the fucking day, I'm not thrilled with that idea. and I'm not a fan of tiktok at all and frankly think the world would be better off with it gone but if it was really about security then maybe we should also look at the companies doing this shit in our own damn borders.
but we can't do that, can we. then we'd lose all that fat lobbying money.

In regards to the US trying to force tiktok to sell to an American country and the whole "Chinese spyware" argument. The Chinese government can do a lot less to directly harm me, an American, than the American government. Do we not remember when secret police were kidnapping protesters off the street in Portland under Trump??? Chinese secret police aren't going to show up to my house and arrest or kidnap me for protesting genocide but American FBI agents very much can. The Chinese fearmongering is short sighted and also racist. Stop it.

it's so stupid when people are like "umm 🤓👆. don't fall into conspiracy theories about the tiktok ban! it's about chinese spyware, not palestine!" and then you open up a nyt article and the first line is some shit like "we need to ban this because too many people are pro palestine"
& in case you thought this was a strawman:

You might be all for the banning of TikTok, and I'll be 100% honest with you that I wouldn't cry over Chinese spyware, but the proposition is far bigger than just TikTok. It's Patriot Act levels of censorship. That's why it should be opposed - not because TikTok is some great thing, I fucking hate that shit with a passion, but because of what this will mean overall. I have a VPN and certain webways that can avoid much of the censorship, but it's not going to simply stop there. But also, no amount of voting, writing to politicians, or campaigning will stop the growing authoritarianism that's been going on for decades upon decades in this country. It may "slow" it, but it won't stop it. The only way to stop authoritarianism is to actively resist it - to seek alternatives, to disobey, to deny the State's authority in every aspect of life. It won't stop at banning TikTok.
