Pheasants perched in our stairwell. Since this image was taken, our flock has grown by 3 more. Two of the 5 peer down on you from the wall. They remind me of the dioramas in natural history museums, some of my favourite places to be. I wonder when the @royal_alberta_museum is set to open? This is the first thing people see when they visit our home. I placed a console table in our front entry because I like having a place to drop my keys at the end of the workday, to signal I'm home. The table and many of its accessories are from @chintzandcompany, from when I was the lead floral designer there. The peacock feathers were from our wedding; at one time there were over 2K feathers in that vase, but I've given many to friends over the years (we'll be celebrating our 10th on September 1!). My friend @matylda3427 brought back the Gunter Grass poster from an art exhibition in Poland. I love its weirdness. My husband Aaron is partial to the wood railing, worn by 100+ years of hands running fingers over the grain. The rail has a profile, not typically found in newer houses of similar size, that makes it really pleasing to hold. Details like that are why I love character homes. Hanging in the stairwell is a charcoal portrait I drew of my sister @hausofjohnjames, blown up into sixteen 16" × 20" tiles from a 1" photo. Aaron rescued the chandelier from a demolition site years ago. It was made in Spain and had almost all its crystals, true lead crystal that we painstakingly cleaned and strung back together once over a weekend, and again when I accidentally dropped the entire chandelier while attempting to hang it. The stories our spaces collect over time are what make a house a home. Every object and surface has something to say, beyond rules of composition and colour interplay. But a beautifully composed vignette is what makes the first impression, drawing our eye in and inviting it to linger. My role as a professional is to balance these forces, anchoring meaningful pieces within a framework of design. Light has a magical quality in this house, even in dim spaces like our front hallway. The painting is by me, seen in a previous post here: https://www.instagram.com/p/BV-i3S4jEzN/ Photo by @briannahughesphotog #interior #interiordecor #decor #interiordesigncanada #interiordesign #homedesign #homestyle #interiorinspiration #interiordetails #housetour #livingwithart #currentdesignsituation #oldhouselove #homestyling #homedetails #interior123 #lifestyle #hallway #vignette #foyer #ourdomaine #apartmenttherapy #myhousebeautiful #canadiancreatives #artistsoninstagram #instagood #yeg #igyeg #yegdesign #yeghome (at Edmonton, Alberta)

My favourite thing to do in a small space like this bathroom is cover the walls in deep, dramatic colour. Embrace the coziness! And for a night owl like me, this dark chocolate room helps ease me into the morning. I layered in more shadowy tones with bronze fixtures, a black toilet seat and a gold-framed postcard of a showstopping @jpgaultierofficial wedding gown, picked up for me by @hausofjohnjames when we saw his amazing retrospective @sfmoma. The clay pitcher hides grooming essentials in plain sight, as storage is always a challenge in old homes like mine. Special thanks to @ushua78 at Custom Floors for hooking me up with the grey bamboo tile. At first, the Man and I thought it might be too contemporary in our home, but it is perfect. When you can't bring the bed to the treehouse, bring the tree to the bed (or at least a few branches). An abundance of soft pillows is also a must. I sewed the giant grey ones in the back from two silk table squares gifted to me by my dear friend @kelseynovartstudio. A peek into our bedroom. This was one of the last rooms we painted, nearly 4 years after we bought the house, even though most of the house was done within 6 months after we moved in. Sometimes life is like that. The Bill Anderson photograph was our first serious art purchase, bought almost on a whim after Aaron and I saw it @peterrobertsongallery. It's a combination of several images taken from the same spot over the course of a day, which gives it an otherworldly quality that we love, more like a drawing than a photo. The light upstairs is moody and beautiful but not enough to sustain plants, so I hung several large magnolia branches to add an organic element and keep the bedroom from feeling sterile. This room was painted high gloss caramel baby poo when we bought the house, perhaps an experiment by the previous owner. Now, it's a dreamy, dusky purple, soft but not too feminine. I sat with the swatch, looking at it at different times of day and in different lighting conditions before deciding. I wanted something restful, sophisticated, and sexy, a sanctuary for whiling away any hour of the day. And I'm happy to say it's all that and more. Pheasants landed on our landing. They scared our kid when she was younger, but she's used to them now. This spot used to be one of her favourite places to play. I suspect she felt a bit like an eagle in her eyrie, and we would often find small toys littering the stairwell. Above the mantel, I hung "Violin After Picasso", a project from my early art school days. My instructor, Tom, suggested I hang on to several of the pieces I created as touchstones to remind me of the strength of my talent as an emerging artist, to look back on years later to remind me how far I've come. My years in art school were a dark time for me, full of doubt at the creative path I was drawn to yet compelled to move forward. Back then, I found even the smallest paintings incredibly intimidating, and if you'd told me then that I would be doing houses, halls and gala events now I wouldn't have had it in my mind to believe you. And yet, here I am. I'm often asked where I get my ideas from, and the truth is they grow naturally, almost spontaneously, from the joy I feel when working with my clients, my colleagues, my friends and fans. Whether its freeform sculptures made from mannequin legs, a dining table covered in mountains of salt, or a forest of colourful upholstered mushrooms, it takes trust from people like you to see my vision through to its magical end. My work is how I express my gratitude at my clients' commitment to good art and design and original ideas. Thank you for following me on this journey. One of many bell jars/cloches in my collection. This one, with its straight sides, large size and simple design, is my favourite. It houses a little steampunk-esque display dedicated to my godmother, who passed away years ago (the Scottish thistle was from a wreath at her funeral). I didn't used to be a fan of thistle, and even dug a large clump out of our garden after we moved into our home, but now I like them because they make me think of her. I'm reminded of an article I recently read against decluttering, when disposing of items from our past becomes an act of erasing our history. As a self-described maximalist, I have more things than many people (a consequence of the business I'm in), but I'm a believer in keeping things that bring you joy or that are useful to the life you're living now, and letting go of things that don't or aren't. I read "The Life-changing Magic of Tidying Up", and loved it, though I don't fold my shirts so they stand up on their own. But I balance the lessons from that book with another book, "A Perfectly Kept House is the Sign of a Misspent Life". At their core, both books are about attracting beautiful things that make you happy and help you live well. No matter what your aesthetic, that's a wonderful thing. Bring the wild into your home with décor inspired by the great outdoors. I inherited (read: stole) these brass deer from my Mom. I needed a couple large animals for a window display I was doing, and they didn't make it back to her house afterward. She'd had them since I was a little girl and I can remember playing with the antlers and even hopping on for a ride after school. Depending on my mood and the season, our house may shift from English library to rustic farmhouse. Even an old world glamour lover like me can create a fluid transition between outdoors and in. Layering in greenery and natural materials like wood, wicker and leather softens antiques and adds a human element well-suited to today's more casual lifestyles. If I had to choose one room in our home to spend the rest of my life in, it would be the dining room. Our dining room is the centerpiece of our home and social life. We've hosted dinner parties of 4 to 16 people in there, wiled away many hours reading books, danced, shared secrets, cried, and even stretched canvases. When we meet someone new, our first instinct is to invite them to dinner. We're in the process of adding a few more bookshelves along the walls as our collection has grown since this picture was taken. And the number of toys in our house has increased with addition of a kid, and another nugget on the way. When I design a home it's always with these things in mind. How will a home grow and change? How can it best serve the life being lived there right now? The happiest home is one that encourages its people to live how they dream of living, for now and for many years to come.
