Day 8: Frail

The Shol’i leaned heavily on her cane as she tried to focus on the meeting, her limbs aching as the minutes crept by. It was times like these that she truly felt her age - though if she was completely honest, she’d forgotten exactly what her age was. Old enough that I can’t be out of a chair for too long, she thought wryly. 

She realized her head was hanging forward under the weight of her montrals, and she straightened, feeling cold relief flood her spine as she did so. Her montrals and lekku had grown longer and heavier as she aged, and she couldn’t help but be a touch annoyed that part of her body had betrayed her so. If her lekku grew much more, she’d be tripping over them soon. 

Movement caught the Shol’i’s eye. Bored of the assembly, a handful of children had broken away from their parents and were chasing each other. They sprinted, leapt, dodged, pivoted, dove, their short legs pumping madly as they played. 

She was exhausted just watching them. 

Part of her wanted to join them. She remembered racing through the grasslands with her siblings and cousins, the electric feeling of pursuing prey on a hunt, dancing - oh, how she missed dancing. 

Her body couldn’t take that strain anymore. But she had made peace with that fact years ago. The Shol’i smiled as she watched the children play.

He just needs plenty of rest and he’ll be back to normal soon enough.
