So when it comes to IndyCar we have a ‘big three’ when it comes to journalists
Marshall Pruett from RACER magazine
Nathan Brown from the IndyStar
Jenna Fryer from Associate Press
And, in all honesty, this whole Penske P2P situation shows everyone’s strengths.
Pruett is one of those motorsport journalists that were previously a mechanic so not only has that technical knowledge to give a different insight and expand on the information we have so far but has sources amongst the engineering and technical sides that’s others often don’t have.
Brown will ask questions, having gone to Tim Cindric several times since this all came to light and do his own investigations.
And Fryer, throws shade and stirs shit on twitter hoping it will somehow convince someone to give a tell all on her fainting couch.
Like, I wish I was joking. The woman has been attacking Josef since this began of all this happening.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Fun fact: Josef was always scheduled for Friday media, even before it was announced that he would be doing a mini conference in the morning.
And it’s not the first time she’s pulled shit like this.
She spent the “Daytona 23 hours and 58 minutes” acting like a gossip channel about what had happened to Devlin’s puppy as if to justify why she was at the track cause she talked more about blocking people than she did the race itself.
Then we have her basically bashing David Malukas for being upset that he didn’t win the Indy 500 rookie of the year over Jimmie Johnson, falsely claiming that he had abandoned another AP Journalist when he hadn’t and giving a half hearted back pedal before calling him and Dale Coyne Racing unsporting.
There’s also when she reported on Fernando Alonso’s announcement to be doing the 500, which was full of misinformation (highlights being that IndyCar and F1 totally use the same Honda engine and Fernando wasn’t going to have to do the rookie runs). When people including Mario and Michael fucking Andretti were calling her out on her bullshit, what did she do?
Compared herself to a journalist who had been murdered in Russia for speaking out against Putin and then used Billy Monger’s fund raiser as further deflection.
She acts like this, knowing that because she works for AP, people will still come to her with stories.
We’ve literally had Zak and Chip fight over her fainting couch throughout the Palou Contract saga.
And it’s fucking infuriating.

A Near-Full Tier List Of 70s Atari 2600 Games
With only a couple games left to go and me needing to 'git gud' in one of them, it's only logical that it's time to wrap things up with a good old fashioned tier list!
Note: Some of my opinions have changed over time, so if some of the ordering doesn't make sense to you if you've read earlier reviews, that's why.
Football, Slot Racers and Superman will be added to the list if I can either find a second player (first 2) or a cartridge of the game (last one).
We got 28 games to go over here. F tier to A tier in that order. No S cuz there's zero games that really fit that bill. Let's rock.
F Tier
#28 Space War (11/40)
Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. Who thought porting a game from 1962 was a good idea on a console that already had surperior alternatives of the genre? The singleplayer was the worst gaming experience i've ever had. It's not even in space, dangit! Disastrous release.
#27 Slot Machine (11/40)
The title doesn't lie, this sure is a slot machine. And that is all it is. How does one manage to have less value than Basic Math, I wonder? Should've given more memory to Casino, Atari...
#26 Hunt & Score (10/40)
Awful controls, lacking visuals, horrendous noises and it's much, much, much cheaper to buy a copy of a real memory match game anyway. The (second) worst of the worst, even amongst several weak 1978 releases that held no value as soon as better games came out.
#25 Miniature Golf (11/40)
What am I even looking at? You move a square and that determines the angle of another square bouncing around, which is as tedious as it sounds. Squares squares square. Ourgh, I hate it. If only it had more holes so I could hate it even more.
D Tier
#24 Basic Math (12/40)
Woof, okay. As a random math problem generator with funny sound effects, it... functions. That's all I can say about it. It's a blank screen if you remove the numbers. This is my lowest of the low bars for what is somewhat passable in some regards and what isn't.
#23 Hangman (14/40)
Impressive selection of words due to being the first game with expanded memory. Now why you would spend your bucks on this when a piece of paper is something almost everyone has, I wouldn't know. Nobody wants to play Hangman alone.
#22 Street Racer (18/40)
Even more boring than Indy 500. Every mode plays the same as each other with very mild changes. Number Munchers is as good as it gets, and that's only because it's over sooner.
#21 Code Breaker (14/40)
Graphically almost as bad as flippin' Basic Math, made worse by how confusingly it plays it's cards and the fact that half the screen estate ain't being used while playing Nim. Below all the rubbish, Nim managed to curve out a tiny place in my heart due to it's alright AI.
#20 Flag Capture (16/40)
Better than Code Breaker due to being a more justified release. Otherwise, forgettable. So much so, that i'm out of things to say.
#19 Home Run (16/40)
A kinda ass way to play baseball, however props must be given for hardly having a point of reference at this point. It completely trumps the RCA Studio II version and it seems to be fairly close to the version by Epoch in Japan. Major positive is that it's a lot faster than it's contemperaries.
C Tier
#18 Outlaw (20/40)
Based on a revolutionary arcade title with a proper microprocessor. I find this one very dull. At least it has some minor things going for it like being able to deconstruct the obstacles in your way. Well done Outlaw, you did the bare minimum.
#17 Indy 500 (21/40)
Extremely mid racing. Single players are gonna be done with it in 3 seconds flat as the time trialing is not fun at all. Multiplayer is oooooookay. Decent engine noises for the time.
#16 Brain Games (18/20)
Errrrhhh, I may have been slightly too harsh earlier. Visually it's kinda gross, however you could argue that the collection of brain teasers here ain't too awful. I had a modicrum of fun with some of 'em.
#15 Star Ship (22/40)
The most striking game of the launch lineup for attempting first person well before a game could do it for realsies. I can appreciate it as an art form, as a game though? I'm good.
#14 Sky Diver (21/40)
At least it doesn't fuckin' squeal at ya at all times like in the arcade. However, unlike that version, it's pretty much multiplayer-only and the thrill of seeking a high score got almost completely butchered as a result. Satisfactory port, nothing more.
#13 Human Cannonball (20/40)
Has some personality in the form of the guy you shoot out of the cannon, and I found myself somewhat immersed by the smart way the game's visuals came to be. Otherwise, dull as dishwater.
#12 Basketball (21/40)
The first proper attempt at a realistic ball sports title. It tries a 3D perspective and for competitive play, I can see a decent time being had here. The repetition and lack of modes very much hurt it unfortunately.
#11 Blackjack (23/40)
An entirely functional and sorta addicting take on the card game of old. Gets completely trounced by Casino which is essentially an enhanced version of this.
#10 Bowling (24/40)
Falls under the same kinda umbrella as Basketball. Don't mind this one. It has good visuals (a multicolor sprite!) and a goofy dance when you clear all the pins. Kinda wears thin once you know where to stand however.
#9 Video Chess (23/40)
The best AI of the console put into a cart that could barely handle it. Sluggish movement, long loading times and hard-to-discern visuals make it a hard sell now. However, back THEN, this fuckin' kicked ass for the common man. It gets a formal handshake from me.
B Tier
#8 Air Sea Battle (28/40)
A fine introduction to the Atari 2600's library. I think it's sorta boring and the AI is hardly a contest, but the multiplayer is still enjoyable enough and it's audiovisually one of the better launch games.
#7 Casino (22/40)
How I gave this a lower score than Blackjack, I have no idea. You can play the same exact game again here with improved visuals, or dive into a couple variaties of poker, of which I actually really like Poker Solitaire. Good package!
#6 Backgammon (27/40)
Graphically one of the most impressive games on 2600 so far. Gameplay-wise, yeah it's Backgammon and Acey Deucy alright. This game thought me the ropes and i'm thankful for it. I would almost call this a worthy substitute for buying the real thing. Almost.
#5 Canyon Bomber (26/40)
Very solid ports of two middling arcade games, Canyon Bomber and Destroyer. It only made sense as they were essentially two peas in a pod from the getgo. Tired of Air-Sea Battle and in the need of something you can also play competently alone? This one's for you.
#4 Breakout (25/40)
I WILL get back to this one. I promise. The Atari 2600+ is coming in in 2 weeks and will allow me to play it with an actual paddle controller for the first time. Playing with a controller does not do it justice. It's Pong for the score hunters. 8 modes with 4 variations each is only rivalled by those coming up ahead on the list.
A Tier
#3 Surround (27/40)
Doesn't have the quirky ASMRy noises from arcade Dominos, otherwise this is an extremely solid competitive pre-Snake Snakelike. Very replayable because it allows you to doodle around freely, too.
#2 Combat (31/40)
The quintessential pack-in for the 2600 in it's early years. I don't like that it lacks a singleplayer mode completely- the multiplayer is still a hoot on occasion though. Even contains some funny glitches if you're into that sorta thing.
#1 Video Olympics (33/40)
Pong remains a classic that's still good for the occasional bout. This is that, but with a TON of other modes to invite a pal over for. The single player is destined to play one mode, however the AI is competent enough to keep that fresh for a little bit too. Easily the definitive way to play gaming's granddaddy.
Soon, Video Olympics shall be rivalled or even dethroned. The 2600's hayday is about to kick into high gear. And with that, I mean a couple weeks as I wait for my new old console to arrive in the mail. See ya then, you goofy video game crash instigator.

Injuries, Job Security, and How MotoGP and Indycar Differ...Or Don't.
In the last two years, two racers I support have been seriously injured. One was Enea Bastianini, rider of the #23 Ducati in MotoGP, and the other was David Malukas, who never actually got to drive the #6 NTT Data Arrow McLaren-Chevrolet Indycar.
So, just to go over what happened to them: Enea Bastianini was injured in the opening sprint race of the 2023 MotoGP season, the Portuguese GP at Portimao. Luca Marini went up his inside into turn five (Torre VIP), lost it, and his bike slid into Enea's bike. Enea broke his collarbone in this crash, wound up missing the opening five races, came back, injured himself again at Catalunya, and missed another three races.
Enea would return for the Indonesian Grand Prix and would then win the Malaysian Grand Prix towards the end of the season. That win, combined with Jorge Martin on the Pramac Ducati failing to beat Francesco Bagnaia for the championship, secured Enea's seat for 2024.
So, while Enea was enjoying a secure offseason, David Malukas was preparing for his switch from Dale Coyne Racing to a frontrunning team in the form of Arrow McLaren...except, he never actually made his debut for the team.
David Malukas was mountain biking in California, riding an easy trail, when, trying to slow himself, pulled the front brake too hard, went up and over the handlebars, and landed on his hands. He would break his left wrist and it was announced he would miss St. Pete and probably Thermal.
St. Pete and probably Thermal soon became St. Pete and definitely Thermal, missing those two races. Callum Ilott would fill in.
Malukas missed Long Beach next, with Theo Pourchaire in the car now.
Then Theo Pourchaire raced Long Beach as well.
Around this time, various rumors started flying about Malukas getting replaced. This only grew as Nathan Brown reported that Malukas had traveled to Panama in order to receive stem cell shots to speed up his recovery, and only then did he get the pins in his wrist removed.
Then, after Barber - the fourth race of the season, Malukas blacked out his twitter page. I was sat in a discord debating what exactly this meant with some other Indycar fans, with news picking up that he had been dropped. With the story pretty much out there, Arrow McLaren made the announcement early in the morning, David Malukas had been released after failing to meet his contractual obligations.
By now, it's been announced that Ilott will do the Indy 500, and then Theo Pourchaire will fill out the rest of the season in the #6. The Malukas at McLaren story ended before it could even begin.
Meanwhile, in MotoGPland, Enea Bastianini continued with the factory Ducati team. However, with Jorge Martin now building up an annoyingly large championship lead and Marc Marquez on the Ducati stealing all the attention, the whole world seems to think it's between the two of them to get the Ducati factory seat for 2025.
For the record, Enea is tied on points with Marquez, just two behind his teammate, and spent this weekend's race - the French Grand Prix at the Le Mans Bugatti Circuit - starting tenth, getting a penalty, recovering to fourth, setting fastest lap, and finishing just 2.2 seconds off the lead.
Enea is an immense talent, he's the rider I chose to support when I decided to become a MotoGP fan ahead of the 2023 season, and it's so rotten to see his career falling apart because of factors outside of his control.
As for Malukas, he's a young, popular kid and has proven so talented on the ovals in a Dale Coyne Racing car. I was so eager to see what he could do with an Arrow McLaren, particularly at tracks like Iowa, Gateway, and Nashville which seemed like they'd suit him. Now, we're not going to get the chance, and it's unclear where he might land if he were to try and return to Indycar.
So, in theory, MotoGP gives more time to injured racers, but no matter what series you're in, motorsports can be a cutthroat business. Bastianini and Malukas certainly aren't the first racers to lose top rides after an injury, and they certainly won't be the last. It's not exactly an industry known for job security.
If I could manifest a happy resolution to both, I'd have Enea Bastianini go to factory Aprilia to join Maverick VInales, while David Malukas could join Meyer Shank Racing (perhaps with Tom Blomqvist returning to IMSA with the same team) to reinforce their oval program the same way Felix Rosenqvist has revitalized that team on the road and street circuits.
For now though, we wait to see what happens to them.
To end on a happier note, Brad Keselowski won the Darlington Goodyear 400 NASCAR race last night running a throwback scheme in honor of the TOM's Castrol Supra. That is an awesome motorsports word randomizer and the fact that it's real is why NASCAR is really cool in 2024.
One day I'll write a blogpost where talking about current NASCAR is actually the point instead of just spending the final paragraph gushing about last weekend's cool race.

The Anatomy of the 427 SOHC – Ford’s Answer to the HEMI that was banned from NASCAR and went drag racing.
What is the most feared engine ever to come out of Ford? A very subjective question – but the Boss 302, 427 Tunnel Port, Boss 429 come to mind. All these are candidates, but a lot of people would say that distinction belongs to the 427 SOHC. Mostly referred to as a 427 “Cammer” or “Sock”.
1964 was the year that Richard Petty won the Daytona 500 with the new Dodge 426 Hemi. Ford was running the 427 Hi-Riser that year and won the majority of NASCAR races. The writing was on the wall and the boys at Ford had to come up with an answer to the new Hemi. Within 90 days, Ford took what it learned from the 255ci Dual Overhead Cam Indy motor and applied it to the bulletproof 427ci FE motor. The displacements started at 332ci and grew to 428ci. The baddest of the bad of these were the 427’s and the King of the 427’s is the 427 SOHC!
The shortblock for the “cammer” was basically all 427 hi-riser. Ford wanted to keep the cost down by using as many off-the-shelf parts as it could. The crank was the 427 forged steel version that was cross-drilled at both the mains and rods. This crank with the steel hi-riser connecting rods and special “hemi-head” pistons was the ticket needed to live at 7500 rpms. Increased oil pressure and updated water pump helped to keep all fluids flowing no matter what the conditions were.
The main thing that drew your eyes to this motor was the massive valve covers, which were made from magnesium. One look and you knew that this was no ordinary engine. The heads were cast iron and wide. With a machined combustion chamber putting the compression ratio at 12.0:1. The intake ports were a “tunnel port” design that fed 2.25″ intake valves and through 1.90″ exhaust valves, gases exited out D shaped exhaust ports. Hollow stem intake valves were used and the exhaust valve stem were sodium filled to help control the heat that is generated at 7500 rpms.
The first public mention of the Cammer V8 appeared in the Daytona Beach Morning Journalon Feb. 23, 1964. Beaten up at Daytona all month by the new 426 Hemi engines from the Dodge/Plymouth camp, Ford officials asked NASCAR to approve an overhead-cam V8 the company had in the works. But as the Journal reports here, NASCAR boss Bill France turned thumbs down on Ford’s proposed engine. France regarded overhead cams and such to be European exotica, a poor fit with his down-home vision for Grand National stock car racing.
Even though France barred the SOHC V8 from NASCAR competition, Ford proceeded to develop the engine anyway, hoping to change Big Bill’s mind. In May of 1964, a ’64 Galaxie hardtop with a Cammer V8 installed was parked behind Gasoline Alley at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where the assembled press corps could get a good look at it.
On October 19, 1964, NASCAR moved to ban all “special racing engines,” in its words, eliminating both the Cammer Ford and the Chrysler 426 Hemi from Grand National competition for 1965. Chrysler responded by temporarily withdrawing from NASCAR, while Ford continued on with its conventional 427 pushrod engine in NASCAR and took the SOHC engine to the drag strips.
Despite heavy lobbying from Ford, in December of 1965 NASCAR again banned the Cammer for 1966, with USAC piling on (Spartanburg Herald-Journal, December 18, 1965 above). However, in April of 1966 NASCAR finally relented. Sort of. Okay, not really. The Cammer was now allowed, technically, but only in the full-size Galaxie model, limited to one small four-barrel carb, and with an absurd, crippling weight handicap: nearly 4400 lbs, 430 lbs more than the Dodge and Plymouth hemis. At that point Ford said no thanks and dedicated the Cammer to drag racing. The engine never turned a lap in NASCAR competition.
Ford made the Cammer widely available in the drag world, providing engine deals to nitro racers Tom Hoover, Pete Robinson, Connie Kallita, and a host of others. Among the most successful Cammer-equipped drag cars were the 1966-67 Comet flip-top funny cars (Don Nicholson, Eddie Schartman, et. al.) and Mickey Thompson’s dominating ’69 Mustang team starring Danny Ongais and Pat Foster.

Legjobb koncertek 2023
Namármost. Idén ez lesz az egyetlen listám, ugyanis márciusban történt két dolog, ami meghatározta zeneileg az évemet, és nem álltam fel belőle. Egyrészt a Panda Bear & Sonic Boom koncert a Magyar Zene Házában eszméletlenül beütött, utána beszélgettem 10 percet Noah-val, ami szintén baromi jó volt. Imádom a lemezt, de élőben sokkal-sokkal jobb volt az egész, eszméletlenül örülök, hogy ilyen előadókra is ki lehet menni Budapesten koncertre (felkészül: Godspeed You! Black Emperor). Másrészt elkezdtem hallgatni Andrew Hickey: History of Rock Music in 500 Songs podcastjét, ami a Reset-hez hasonlóan az 50-es évektől indul.

Indie Author Update #23
I've been writing pretty consistently, about 500 words per day. And I'm on chapter 31. Woot woot. The only issue is that I decided to put together several events into one cluster, and a lot of the characters are overwhelmed, so it's hard to stay in their heads or play out their actions. Yesterday I only managed to pump out like 300 words after about 4 hours of playing through scenarios.
I was able to do a nice photoshoot on Monday for posts and reels. Oh! And one of my artist friends finished my commission for the ballroom scene between Moira and her mysterious suitor in Phoenix Awakening.
I honestly can't wait to say his name, which is only revealed in the second book. I had debated changing it once a well known author came out with their new series, and named their FMC the same. But it is what it is. And in my mind, I chose the name first.
Next week, is more of the same. Writing, posting, sleeping and hanging out with my furbabies. I've been having trouble finding good books to read on my down time. I'm more of a mood reader. But I'm pretty sure I'm just burnt out. My brain is tired and empty lol. Going to take a break day today and hopefully I get back on track tomorrow.

Max Verstappen: Red Bull driver questions if Formula 1 is 'actually a good life'
Verstappen is top of this season's Championship standings after winning in Bahrain and Australia Max Verstappen says he enjoys racing and winning and the money that comes from it - but could still end up asking himself whether Formula 1 "is actually a good life". The Red Bull driver's concerns stem from the ever-expanding schedule and F1's trials of different formats, such as the revised 'sprint' in Baku this weekend. "I always said that even if there won't be any more sprint races, if we keep expanding the calendar and the whole weekend is that long, at one point you question yourself: is it worth it?" Verstappen said. "I do like racing. I do like winning. I know that, of course, there is the salary and everything, and you have a good life. But is it actually a good life? "I think sometimes you get to a point in your career where maybe you want to do other stuff. "I have the contract until the end of 2028 and then we'll review again, but I do feel that if it's getting at one point too much, then it's time for a change." The two-time champion has always made it clear that he does not especially enjoy the 'sprint' weekends, which feature a shorter race on Saturdays in addition to the grand prix. He prefers F1's traditional approach. But combine this with four-day weekends, and a calendar that this year will be a record 23 races, with potentially even longer schedules coming in the future, and Verstappen finds himself pondering his long-term future at a time when many might expect him simply to be loving life. He admitted it was "a bit difficult to imagine what is going to happen past 2028". And he acknowledged some would not understand why he was feeling so ambivalent about a long-term future in F1. "This sounds very weird for people from the outside, because they're like: 'Oh, you're in Formula 1, you're winning!'" Verstappen said. "And probably I would have said the same when I was in their position. But once you're in it, it's not always how it looks like or how people think your life is. "I mean, yes, it's great, it's amazing and I can do a lot of things. I'm very independent. But there is always a limit to certain things." Verstappen has won the title for the last two years - controversially against Lewis Hamilton in 2021 and then in dominant fashion last season - and is already well on course for a third championship in 2023. Red Bull look like they could dominate F1 for the next few years - at least until a new set of rules is introduced in 2026. Verstappen is said to be paid a salary in the region of 40-50m euros and he made it clear he was committed to Red Bull at least until the end of his existing contract. But he said he was not motivated by breaking Hamilton's F1 records. "No I'm not interested in winning seven or eight titles," he said. "If you have the car to do it great, but I am already happy so it's OK." Verstappen added: "I want to do other things, other competitions. A bit like Fernando [Alonso] did. But it also needs to be worth it to come back [to F1]. "Some people just love racing and that's the only thing they know and the only thing they want to do. I am probably a bit more in the middle. I mean, I do love racing. But I also want to do other kinds of racing. And then you can't combine the two or set up other kinds of stuff." He said his other ambitions were in "endurance racing" and "owning my own team". But he ruled out racing in IndyCars. "I like watching IndyCar," Verstappen said. "I think there are a lot of great drivers in there and also people I raced against, so I have a good connection with them. And I like seeing them do well. "But me driving the Indy 500? Absolutely not. I might go there and watch but not race." via BBC Sport - Formula 1 http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/

Ferneste unfinished wip (because if I think too long about it I go insane)
I started writing this a few days after Fernando announced his switch to AM, and I haven’t looked back since. 1500 words, general rating.
Fernando retires at the end of the 2023 season.
Esteban knows he’s been lucky to have shared a team with the Spaniard for three years. Knows that he has been living on borrowed time with the other ever since their signatures dried underneath the contract back in 2020. He’s always known that their stint together would come to an end. Some things are simply not meant to be, and a dominance soaked in blue and pink is just another temporary matter in this world.
Friend leaves. Loss of a legend cuts like a knife through the paddock, creates a gaping wound that refuses to close. Fernando pulls him aside, a few hours before he makes the announcement to the press. Palm of the other’s hand burns on the small of his back as Fernando hugs him a bit tighter than usual. Esteban is stuck between wishing that it would have lasted forever, and wishing that Fernando disappeared immediately after speaking those cursed words.
The races after the truth has been placed down at his feet are the hardest to stomach. Esteban is forced to watch Fernando from the corner of his eye. Forced to imagine a world in which he’s standing next to another driver. Fernando pulls him a bit closer than before when they’re seated next to one another on the back of a parading car. The touch of a hand on his knee lingers, even after the palm has long since been removed.
Sometimes he swears he can see it when he stares at his own reflection in the mirror. All the ways Fernando has ever touched him staring back at him in the shape of scars and bleeding red marks. Fingers encircled around his wrist, a grasp on his shoulder. Words of advice have settled around the sprinkled birthmarks, to connect the dots between ignorance and softly cradled skill.
One does not drive with a God like Fernando, only to escape without some lasting marks from the battles fought on and off track.
Esteban watches as they strip the number 14 off the walls of the Alpine factory. Watches as all remains of Fernando are scrubbed away. The new generation comes knocking, and suddenly, he is the more experienced one in the team dynamic. He knows he can never be as good of a mentor as Fernando was to him, he doesn’t have the same kindness resting inside of him. There are no whispers about better inside corners passed on to Oscar. There is no hand resting on Oscar’s shoulder when they’re herded out in front of the masses on race day.
It can never be like it was with Fernando. So Esteban doesn’t even try.
They keep in touch whenever they can. Write texts that don’t really mean anything in the grand scheme of things. Fernando congratulates him on race results, and Esteban asks how retirement is going, only to be met with a photo from a random pit lane every time. Not even retirement can keep Fernando out of a car.
Silence seeps through the line at the beginning of the 2025 season. Fernando chases after his triple crown with open hands and a kind of determination Esteban has hardly seen before. He’s busy with the Indy 500, and Esteban himself has the first few races of the season to get through. It gets better with Oscar, but it’s still nowhere close to the same. The Alpine liveries no longer scrap between them, no longer battle for the points.
Engineers bring a miracle, get them a few more sporadic podiums scattered across the 23 races of 2024. A few more first place finishes adding to his resume. Oscar tastes champagne before his first season is out. Esteban tries not to be jealous of it, but he finds himself in foreign airports waiting to go to the factory for some more tests, with something venomous itching underneath the skin of his palms.
He stops talking about Fernando somewhere around Monaco, stares out across the track with his hands in the pockets of his jeans as the team follows him around for his track walk. It’s never quite the same after the tip of his tongue finds comfort in the heavy silence of what could have been. At least he no longer tastes blood when he swallows down another story.
“We’re driving for a championship.” how things have changed. A few years ago they were driving for points, bottom step of the podium at most. Now, with a better engine and an even better car, they’re actually chasing for the title. It’s been weeks since he’s heard from Fernando last. The gaping wound left in his absence has not yet closed. If anything, it has started to fester around the edges, where it still remains raw.
More often than not, Esteban does not drink from the champagne that’s handed to him on the podium. He lowers the bottle down towards the waiting hands of the team. His wins are for them, for the ghost that still lingers in the Alpine garage beyond his reach.
He hopes that Fernando will be proud of him. If the Spaniard is even still watching these days.
2026 comes to a close, and he’s second in the standings. Loses to Charles by a handful of points. It’s bitter. Hard to stomach. Yet he still claps as the boy he grew up with accepts his trophy, surrounded by the thousand flashes of just as many cameras.
FROM Fernando Alonso: Bad luck, conejito. That’s all it is. Bad luck.
He saves the message. Even when he doesn’t know exactly why. Stares at it when restlessness makes a home out of him in a strange hotel in a country he should know by now. China the following year brings fireworks, and in Turkey he extends his lead in the championship even further.
Fernando doesn’t win the Indy 500. In his mind, the other was always impossible to defeat. But age must finally be catching up to him, the day which no one thought would ever come has finally arrived, and Fernando steps away from racing for good. The frequency of texts picks up again. Scattered notes left throughout days and nights. When timezones make little sense and the most important thing in the world is a friendship that has refused to wither and die.
It’s good to know that the other still thinks about him. It’s good to know that he’s still wanted in Fernando’s life, even after all these years have gone past.
Esteban needs one more win. One more victory and one more bottle of champagne which will never touch his lips. He always needs one more, just as Fernando did before him. Trembling fingers wrap around the trophy of the Turkish grand prix set aside for the winner, and he knows he’s done it. The child racing on tires his peers threw in the trash raises the newest addition to a collection of victories to the sky, and with such simple movements, claims a title to pin to his chest.
He sees Fernando the moment he leans forward to lower the bottle of champagne. Meets former teammate’s gaze in the same way he’s always envisioned it was to happen in movies.
There is no lightning splitting the sky, no rolling thunder which stops time, and yet, the whole world is shrouded in darkness all the same. Nothing remains. Nothing, except for the wrinkles around Fernando’s eyes and the way his lips are curved up into a smile bright enough to rival the lights around the circuit.
Esteban comes home when he lowers himself from the podium and into the arms of his friend.
He's always wanted too much. Always reached towards the stars with open palms, wishing to be burned by them. Fernando opens his arms, cradles the back of his head with a large hand. Fingertips buried in his hair, a ghost of a stroking thumb against the nape of his neck. Esteban never regretted not drinking the champagne, but he's never been so glad for it as he is at that moment.
It’s not like someone can receive a doctors’ note for a broken heart. It won’t show up on echos and in the results of the wandering hands of health professionals checking him over before every race. A broken heart is one of those few things in life that just is. One of those few things that go by unnoticed, even by Esteban himself, until he rests his cheek against Fernando’s, and he can feel the shattered parts of him slipping back together.
Hands fall, come to rest at the small of his back. Fernando lifts him up as he did when he tasted victory for the first time. Spins him around until there are stars lurking behind his closed eyed and his stomach has been tied up into knots.
Feet leave the ground, and when toes find the steady earth again, he is not the same man he was mere moments before.
“Congratulations.” Fernando kisses his cheeks. First, he places genuine admiration on the left. Next comes something that feels dangerously close to love on the right. “Welcome to the club. Estebanito.”
Esteban has taken a title, and yet, he can’t bring himself to even care about it. Victory would not even have tasted half as sweet as it does now that he gets to share the spoils with Fernando by his side. “There is nowhere I would rather be, Fernanito.”

David is genuinely happy and excited to be in the Indycar series and it shows. He is enthusiastic, ready to participate in any social media activity, even the embarrassing ones. Despite driving for a team on the lower end of the budget scale, David has shown remarkable results on occasion and always expresses awe to find himself racing against the big names and big teams of the series. His talent is undeniable at just 21 years old and we will be watching his career with great interest for many years to come.
Look, I’m trying to be objective about him but he’s so stinking cute and fun and I think everyone should adore him. As a friend said, just a cute little fairy creature who decided to be a racecar driver for whatever reason. He’s all happiness and sunshine and it’s rare to see him sad or upset.
Tumblr media
Fanfic Lore There are really no set pairings for him. He’s been sort of adopted by the Bus Bros as a Bus Cousin. Battled for the IndyNXT championship title with Kyle Kirkwood and they are friends. Karted with Christian Lundgaard in Europe when they were kids.

Joywave Email Archive 8/15/23
To Our Favorite Mailing List Subscriber,
Greetings from Joywave. We have been enjoying a bit of summer downtime, but today I wanted to write you concerning a side project release that has been in the works for awhile. Jason Suwito and I (Daniel) met during the Joywave/Sir Sly co-headline tour in the Fall of 2018. Jason immediately discovered that I was willing to talk at him all day long and made himself scarce, hiding in green rooms and on the Sir Sly tour bus. His plan to avoid becoming friends with me worked for awhile, but after the tour we found ourselves in the studio together working on a project for another artist. Things went well. We stayed in touch. When the pandemic hit in 2020 we started sending song ideas back and forth online which resulted in an EP called “30% Off!” and a side project duo, “Best Frenz”.
We initially intended “30% Off!” to be a one-off sort of thing, something to keep us occupied during what would surely be a short lockdown period. But as variant after variant washed over the country and the world, our touring schedules remained empty. The exchange of musical ideas continued virtually until we were finally reunited in mid-2022. By then a body of work had emerged that didn’t fit either of our main projects. It was all over the place stylistically and genre-wise, but was connected by a through line yearning for simpler times. Nostalgia and memories, but not our own. Things maybe we wished we’d done having now seen behind the curtain of the future.
The concept of a metaphysical shopping mall came to represent all of this, and the debut full length album from Best Frenz became simply, “The Mall”. In the same way you can get sushi, shoes, plushies, and CDs at your local shopping center, you’ll find bossa nova, indie rock, tinges of hip-hop, and house music all sitting next to each other at ours. Should you really get all that stuff at the mall? I don’t know. But now you can. It’s up to you.
The debut full length album from Best Frenz is out now and you can find it on your preferred streaming platform. Vinyl copies are available in the Joywave merch store, and one of the versions even has a playable mall-themed board game inside (comes with dice, game pieces, and play money). Being of the independent side-project variety, physical copies are limited to a quantity of 200 for the “ghost variant” with board game (the majority sold during preorders but there are some left), 300 for the “mall pink” variant, and 500 for the “fire” variant (1000 vinyl copies of “The Mall” in total).

If you’re still reading, I have no idea why. This is long and your time is valuable. Thanks for checking out the project and for giving enough life to “30% Off!” that Jason and I felt encouraged to continue our musical friendship (best friendship).

2024 is shaping up to a busy year for Joywave. Hopefully we’ll see you then. But for now…
Welcome to The Mall.
- Daniel
