Izuku didn’t remember carrying his body up to the roof of the school. All he knew was that his feet were cold and that he was staring over the edge, looking down at the hard concrete below. He remembered taking off his red shoes and neatly placing them next to the ledge.

Should I leave a note?

He decided not to write a note, besides, the burned and soaked notebook gave all the proof it needed to. He stared at the spot where he would most likely hit the ground and took in a calming breath…

Would it hurt?

Who would be the person to find him?

Would anyone care?

What would Kacchan think?

Izuku felt a freezing chill go down his spine. What was he doing? He would jump because Kacchan told him to? This is wrong. The boy stepped off the ledge, disgusted in himself that he would fall to Kacchan’s will. He shoved his feet back into his shoes, walking back down to the ground safely through the stairs. He would show everyone that he could become a hero and get into U.A without a lousy quirk. He probably won’t be the next #1 hero. But he’ll do his best to reach the top. No matter what it takes.

Forcing a smile onto his face, Izuku started to slowly make his way back home. It probably looked more like the grimace face emoji than a smile, but he didn’t care, he was going to keep smiling. That’s what All Might did.

He stopped smiling, turning into gasps for air as a sludge monster grabbed him and tried to force itself into his body. Slowly cutting his airways off. Trying to fight off the villain, moving around his limbs to try and save himself from what it felt like, molasses. Trying to move the sludge away from his mouth but to no prevail. The monster called him a hero...But he wasn’t a hero! Not yet. He wanted to be... he couldn’t be a hero if he let this villain take control of his body and use him as a puppet! But...But his sight was already getting spotty...The fight in his limbs was getting weaker…

I...I think I’m dying…

I-I don’t wanna die like this! I want to die on my own terms! Not forced to!

It hurts...so...so much and slow...

Someone, please help me!

A deep metallic ping rang noticeable all around, however, Midoriya scarcely saw it as he did whatever it took not to cry.

“It’s alright now young man.” A voice...where have I heard it before?- “Because I am here!”All Might! The villain tried to fight back, but All Might easily dodged and went in for a single punch. The force was so powerful it forced the sludge villain to disperse. The villain said something, but Izuku couldn’t tell. When the sludge was defeated, Izuku fell back onto the pavement and it was either the oxygen deprivation or the impact that rendered him unconscious.

“Hey! Hey!” Izuku heard as his body woke up, feeling rapid but gentle taps on his left cheek. He didn’t want to wake up. He just wanted to sleep. To go home and wallow in his own pity. There’s no way his bad day could get any worse. Either way, he must have given some sign that he was awake as the voice continued.

“Oh good, your awake!” Wait…Izuku’s eyes jolted open, sitting up quickly as he was trying to process what he was seeing

“Sorry ‘bout getting you caught in my villain fighting!” That voice...that’s All Might! “I don’t usually make mistakes like this”

He needed an autograph. Looking frantically around for his journal he was shocked to realize it’s being held towards him. The boy’s eyes widened as he took his journal back from his hero and opened it up to be already signed! All Might’s signature took up the whole spread of his notebook!

“It was the least I could do for getting you all mixed up in this mess!” All Might told him before patting his pocket. It was only then that Izuku noticed the soda bottle containing the villain that had just previously been choking the life out of him. “Now then, I have to get this guy to the police. See you on the other side of the screen!”

All Might turns around stretching out his legs and going into a crouched position about to jump away. Izuku found this as the best opportunity to ask his idol if he could pursue his dream, which was slowly going away after all the years of tormenting. “Wait...t-there is something I need to ask!” he shouted, rushing towards the hero.

Which led to the worst decision Izuku has ever made in his life. He grabbed onto the hero’s leg as he took off, way up high into the sky. This was also one of the scariest moments of his life, as he held on for dear life. But he needed an answer. “Let go of me! Your fanaticism is too much!”

“If I...let go…I’ll die!”

“That’s true,” All Might said and landed on a nearby rooftop. “Well then,” And Izuku was ashamed to hear the annoyance in his voice, “I guess I have time to answer your question.”

Izuku nodded, as he tried to push out the 10 words he needed “Can I...become a hero...even though I’m quirkless?”

All Might half turned towards Izuku. The silence is painful as he waits anxiously for an answer from the hero.

“Without a quirk?” 

All Might started to slightly shake and steam started to roll off hin large muscular body, but Izuku didn’t seem to notice as he was looking down at his shoes. When the steam vanished a man who looks very malnourished appeared. His hair, merely a poor mimic of All Might, was stringy and limp...He looked sickly and…

“Y-y-your deflating..!” Izuku shouted, shooting his head around looking for the 7ft tall hero he was just talking to a minute ago “A fake?! You’re so skinny!” 

“I am All Might. It’s like how those people constantly flexing their muscles at the pool,” he said nonchalantly as he wiped dripping blood from his mouth. “And I’m counting on you to keep your mouth shut about this. That includes your friends.”

“I s-sorta don’t have-”

His thought comes to a halt as he saw the deformed red and purple patchy scar marking All Might’s skin. It was layers upon layers of scars from stitches and Izuku felt his own side start to burn at the thought of the immense pain he must have felt. It worsened as All Might explained the fight that wrecked his body and put a timer on his hero time. “Symbol of peace. Always smiling...I smile to show the pressure of heroes...and to trick the fear inside me. Pros are always risking their lives.” The man spoke with conviction and anger, a pantomime of All Might.

“So the answer to your question is no.” Izuku froze. He had almost forgotten about his question in the showing of his identity, and past. But now that he remembered he just stood there with slumped shoulders trying to make himself smaller. “Heroing is a dangerous job and most villains can’t be beaten without the use of quirks. So no, I don’t think you could become a hero without a quirk. If you want to help others, then you can become a police officer. They’re ofter teased because they get villains delivered to thor doorstep but that is also a fine occupation”

“B-but my dream-” Izuku started as tears welled up in his eyes.

“It’s okay to have dreams. Just make sure those dreams are realistic.” All Might told him as he opened the door on the building and headed inside. The door slammed signifying the end...the end of the conversation and the end of Izuku’s dreams of being a hero. How could he continue on when his idol, the one he looked up to since he could walk, told him to stop trying. All because he didn’t have a quirk

After his idol, his all-time favourite hero broke his already breaking heart Izuku found no other way to continue on. His dreams he held so tightly were more than shattered. It was like someone completely shattered his dreams and breaking them more than all that was left was dust. Not even Kacchan could fully shatter his dreams, but by the hero, he looked up to his whole life. He was useless without a quirk. He was a stupid Deku like what Kacchan had always been telling him all those times before.

Izuku should have listened to him when they were little. He should have given up on his foolish dream of going to UA or becoming one of the greatest heroes. He could see now that the regulation change to allow quirkless people like him to apply to U.A was for publicity’s sake. After all, no quirkless person could actually pass the entrance exams.

“Just hope that you’ll be born with a quirk in your next and life...and take a swan-dive off the roof!”

The laughter of Bakugou's friends rang in Izuku's ear telling him how stupid he was for thinking he ever had a chance in such an unfair world.

Before he could decipher what he was doing, Izuku had kicked his faded red shoes off, once again placing them neatly on the ground and he was standing on the edge of the roof that All Might had so casually left him on after breaking his dreams.  His breath short and rasping. But besides his breaths, Izuku was calmer than he’s been in years. He was starting to feel free.

"You have so much to live for-"

No, I don't.

Izuku quickly shut down his line of thought as fast as it had come. He had nothing to live for. He knew that now. Not without a quirk. Even the police academy would expect him to have a quirk.

The world has no place for me anymore.

As true the thought may be it was still scary. But it was true...

There's no point in delaying the inevitable.

Izuku took one last deep breath, stretching his arms out beside him.

It'll be over fast.

Thought in mind, Izuku fell. The wind rushed passed him faster than ever. Faster than bullet trains. It almost felt like he was flying. A small smile spread across his lips. Flying. That would be a fun quirk to have. It wouldn’t be useless. He wouldn’t be useless.

Izuku didn't process the moment when he had hit the ground. It was only when he looked over and down that he saw himself lying limp on the pavement. His deed was done. But wasn't there supposed to be a bright light? Angels? No light? Flames of hell? Why was he still here?

Grims

Bitty Type and AU: Reapertale Sans

Level: 1-2 out of 5 (depending on if the bitty is a rescue or has gone Grimdark before) 4/5 if the bitty is at risk of going Grimdark and has been amped power wise (very unlikely, as most Grims only get this way if being hurt or abused)

Appearance: Looks like a Sans type, has a flowy effect on clothes. Wears and prefers cloaks or loose Jackets. Their real difference is in their behavior, personality and magic ability. They leak blue magic from their eyes a lot and they float a few centimeters off the ground. Their bones are a slight gray off-white rather then pure white.

Heights Ranges: The typical Bitties sizes, 3-6 inches, most standing about 5-5.5 inches.

Heats: Adult Grims have very small heats, only once a year for about 3 days or less, and it's not particularly strong or alluring to other bitties, which means they are safe to be around other bitties in their heats. However, be aware that Gims have a very time getting pregnant or getting their partners pregnant. Even if they do manage to impregnate, sadly more often then not the baby(s) will not survive.

Health- *They're not immortal like the skeletons they're based on, but they do have amazing health and durability. Also live a really long time as long as they stay in perfect health. *Their mental health is prone to depression, anxiety, PTSD, ect, really easily due to their empathetic nature. Keep an eye on it (I can’t stress this enough) *Unfortunately because of how empathetic they are, they are prone to emotional overload, break downs, and depression. This also means, however, they are very receptive to death and life. *If they are around life or death often (such as if their owner is a doctor), this can also lead them to eventual overload as well. This means you have to check up on them and their mental states if you feel like something is wrong. They are prone to snapping and losing their minds if they are not taken care of or around death too often. This is what we call going Grimdark (more at the bottom).

Diet- *These Bitty Bones feed on life energy to survive (it is not dangerous) but they can eat food if they choose. *We sell monster candies called 'Sugar Souls' that work as a semi substitute for them if they are unable to use your life energy for any reason, and as a tasty snack! *They don't really like sweet things, nor sour, they prefer salty stuff.

Personality Stuff- *Communication is key in owning this type of bitty! *Grims are very confident and strong willed. They can take care of themselves, but that doesn't mean they don't love it when you spoil them with love and cuddles. *They are also very go with the flow kind of bitties, are blunt, sarcastic and love dry humor and dark jokes, but a Grim who has been burned before will have a hard time trusting again. They are also prone to loneliness, as their magic makes them feel off putting and puts others on edge. *Grims don't really have a concept of things like human social norms. Things like privacy just don't really register with them at first. (Ex. don't have any qualms about seeing your or others naked, or vice versa. Unless they view you or others as a potential partner, it doesn't even register for them to care.) However, if things like this make you or others uncomfortable, just ask them to stop or be more aware of stuff like this, and they’ll stop. *They are great with being alone for certain periods (they’re really great if you have a job that doesn't allow them to come with) *Grims have a startling amount of patience, but when it runs out, it is never pretty. *They enjoy chilling and relaxing with others, but also the occasional quiet time by themselves. *Grims like being included in things, even if it's just them watching while you do something. * They love books and to read (prefer actual books but will be fine with electronics) *Loves to be reminded they are loved and cared for. Through vocal affirmations or gifts or remembering things they say, ect. *They are big co-sleepers. It doesn't have to be with you, it can be their brother pair or another bitty or even an animal, but they sleep better with a bed partner. *Grims really like baths, especially bubble baths! Just soaking in the water is super comforting. Don't be surprised if they try to bathe with you! *They don't like Liars, being lied to, or having to lie themselves. If you have a Grim, refrain from asking them to lie for you, as they really despise doing so. But they love you, so they'll do it (but who knows how much that will damage your relationship) *Grims hates when people make a big deal out of something they feels is stupid or not worth doing. *They don't like to be forced into something or left out of things on purpose. They’re really open and honest about when they don't like something or want something or if they’re uncomfortable, and if you ignore that, it might lead to a lashing out and upset bitty.

Other- *This Sans prefers flowy, loose clothes with hoods to make them feel comfortable. It doesn't have to be a full on robe or cloak, a hoodie would work just fine, but they really like the hoods. Also keep in mind he doesn't mind tighter under clothes but he still prefers loose outerwear. *Do not put Grims with violent bitties that will attack if left alone. Since Grims are protective, they will defend themselves and others if attacked, and will even kill if forced (which is horrible for their mental health). Antagonistic and Annoying bitties are fine, just make sure they know not to overstep. *Also don't do well with bitties that constantly belittle or upset the bitties they have decided to protect. *Grims get along with most other bitties, and don't really care even if they don't. Bitties that try to start something will be met with an amused smirk and maybe a sarcastic head pat if they can get away with it. Bitties that continue to try and fight, argue or control a Grim maybe be met with a slowly more and more annoyed Grim, and will be subjected to cold eyebrow raises and might even go as far as trapping them in a cage made of magic or whatever they find around the house. If attacked, they will usually just flee or restrain the attacker. But in life or death, they will not hesitate to attack and kill. However be warned this will most definitely put a strain on their mental state.

Magic- *Grims magic is blue, and they are amazingly good at magic constructs in shapes. (like, instead of wisps of magic, they actually make shapes and platforms). This is because they have a lot of magic for their size and magical output, so they focus it into control. *They are unable to kill people with their powers, unless they are oddly powerful (usually illegal power amplifiers or one with high LV), but they are fully capable of killing bitties if forced. *If there are multiple Grims in a group, they will amplify each other's magic, but even one Papatos can calm and even it out. *Grims passively feed on soul energy! They mostly will feed on you, but also other bitties in larger groups! (which can leads them being amped as well)

Grimdark- *They are prone to snapping and losing their minds, this is what we call going Grimdark. *This is mostly caused by abuse and not being taken care of correctly, but can also happen if they don't output their magic often enough (something very hard to do, like, months of not using magic at all, or years of barley using it), or is around death too often. Them being around or fed too much excess magic cant turn them Grimdark but it can Amp their magic to a more powerful level.  *They will become volatile, paranoid, and their magic will be very reactive. They may attack you, pets, and/or other bitties. They most likely wont be in the right state of mind and have wild mood swings, going from angry to guilt to fear to paranoia, ect. *You might start to feel ill or even sick, this is because they are forcibly draining your life force. They do this in panic mode as a self defense mechanism. A normal Grim can't kill you like this, and will only make you sick, but one who has been around other magic and has been amped, or a particularly powerful one can if your not careful enough. *A normal grim can easily kill a bitty like this however, either by attacks or draining their life force.  *Their bones will darken, becoming an ashen gray and their magic will leak excessively from their eyes, hands (and somtimes other places like joints, feet, mouth, ect). Their magic may ‘burn’ their bones for a lack of a better term and leave markings behind. *If this happens to your Grim, call the center as quick as possible as we’re fully equipped to deal with the dangerous and scared bitties. All Grim owners are required to sign a waver that says you accept the possibility of this upon adopting, but know that a brought in grimdark Grim will temporally be taken from your care until we rule that it wasn't abuse or purposeful neglect that lead to the process. But please dont try and deal with it yourself, it can be very dangerous to you and other bitties if you have em.  *Recovered Grimdarks will still have ashy gray bones (but will be lighter), and they will occasionally still have magical outbursts (this can be trained and worked upon to help manage). They will also have the ‘magic burn’ marks for the rest of their lives and no way to get rid of them sadly. No two burns look the same. *Former Grimdarks go up level 2 of care, and Grims in immediate danger of going Grimdark or are currently Grimdark are level 4. Enhanced or boosted Grims going Grimdark are level 5 and require immediate action to subdue. These bitties have 18+ qualities but aren't 18+ necessarily. Musical Warfare: How to Use Music As a Form of Torture and Assault

Introduction

Although I could easily make this article about the most horrible songs ever written and how they get stuck in our heads, this is not what our topic is about today. In this article, we will discuss torture, its anatomy, and the role music can play in it. We will differentiate between different types of torture, how our senses can be used against us to cause us pain, the after-effects of torture, military uses of music in psychological operations, sonic technologies developed specifically for sieges and law enforcement applications, and how artists are speaking out against the use of their music in these operations. So strap yourself in and continue reading because you're in for ride.

Pain and Perceptions of the Ear

The human ear is defenseless. chrisbitten It's unable to keep sound out, so it must take in all it hears. Without earplugs, anti-noise headphones or other defensive technologies the ear is helpless to protect itself. One of the great advantages of using music as an implement of torture is that it leaves no physical mark. At least, so it seems. Because sound moves particles in the air and pushes the vibrations into our ear, the effect has a potential for danger. With an increase in the volume of sound, the vibrations push particles ever more strongly into our ear, thereby causing harm over time or immediately according to conditions. Here's a brief description on how the ear can be damaged causing hearing loss and auditory malfunction.

Hair cells reside in the cochlea. Bundles of hair-like extensions, called stereo cilia, rest on top of them. When sound waves travel through the ears and reach the hair cells, the vibrations deflect off the stereo cilia, causing them to move according to the force and pitch of the vibration. Different forms of sound cause them to move in a variety of ways. For instance, a melodic piano tune would produce gentle movements, while heavy metal would generate faster, sharper motion. This motion triggers an electrochemical current that sends the information from the stereo cilia through the auditory nerves and eventually to the brain.

­When you hear exceptionally loud noises, your stereo cilia can become damaged and mistakenly keep sending sound information to the auditory nerve cells. In the case of loud sound sources such as rock concerts and fireworks displays, ringing happens because the tips of some of your stereo cilia have actually broken off. You hear those false currents in the ringing in your ear (or head), called tinnitus. However, since you can grow these small tips back in about 24 hours, the ringing is often temporary.

So as you can see although music torture is classified along with other forms of psychological torture, the damage that high volume sound can really cause is actually physical. If music torture causes the loss of hearing, the remedy for this physical ailment is not months or years of counseling, but rather a hearing aid. Deafness is a physical malfunction, not a psychological or emotional issue.

The Differences between Physical and Psychological Torture

Torture is the practice or act of deliberately inflicting severe physical pain and possibly injury on a living being. Although psychological and animal tortures also exist, the forms of torture can vary greatly in duration from a few minutes to several days or even longer. Reasons for torture can also vary greatly and they can include punishment, revenge, political re-education, deterrence, interrogation, coercion, or a sadistic gratification of observing the tortured in agony and pain.

Physical torture methods have been used throughout recorded history and can range from a beating to the use of sophisticated custom designed devices such as the rack. Exceptional ingenuity has been shown in the invention of instruments and techniques for physical torture, which exploit medical knowledge of the vulnerabilities of the human body such as the sensitivity of nail beds to pressure, or of the soles of the feet to heat. Other types of torture can include sensory or sleep deprivation, restraint or being held in awkward or damaging positions, uncomfortable extremes of heat and cold, loud noises or any other means that inflicts severe physical or mental pain. Physical torture is plainly the inflicting of severe pain or suffering on a person.

Psychological torture, on the other hand, uses non-physical methods to cause emotional or mental suffering. Its effects are not immediately apparent unless they alter the behavior of the tortured person. Psychological torture is less well known than physical torture and tends to be subtle and much easier to conceal. In practice the distinctions between physical and psychological torture can often be blurred. In contrast to physical torture, psychological torture is directed at the psyche with calculated violations of psychological needs, along with deep damage to psychological structures and the breakage of beliefs underpinning normal sanity.

Music torture is clearly difficult to categorize. Physically, the ear can become damaged, although no blows were inflicted upon the victim. On the other hand, music torture can prevent a victim from maintaining a normally functioning consciousness. Psychological torture also includes deliberate use of extreme stressors and situations such as mock execution, shunning, violation of deep-seated social or sexual norms and taboos, or extended solitary confinement. Because psychological torture needs no physical violence to be effective, it is possible to induce severe psychological pain, suffering, and trauma with no externally visible effects. Torturers often inflict both types of torture in combination to compound the associated effects.

In fact, music torture is most effective when it is combined with other forms of torture such as mock executions, simulated drowning, sexual and religious humiliation, stress positions or sleep deprivation, the exploitation of prisoners' phobias, the use of mind-altering drugs, hooding, forced nakedness, the use of dogs to frighten detainees, exposing prisoners to extreme heat and cold, physical assault and threatening the use of such techniques against a prisoner or a prisoner's family.

In addition, music torture is sometimes used with medical, pharmacological, and even tickle torture. With medical torture, medical practitioners use torture to judge what victims can endure, to apply treatments that enhance torture, or act as torturers in their own right. Pharmacological torture is the use of drugs to produce psychological and physical pain or discomfort. Tickle torture is an unusual form of torture which can be both physically and psychologically painful. But more commonly, music torture is mixed with using

The Analysis and Effects of Music Torture

So what aspects of music make it possible to turn it into a weapon of torture? Three aspects come to mind and they are a) type of music, b) loudness, or volume, and c) the length of exposure. Often in military operations such as torture or interrogations, the music of choice is usually something which is extremely annoying or very stimulating. For example, several days after Paris Hilton announced that she would release an album, the Pentagon decided to buy 50,000 copies to use against insurgents in the Anbar province in Iraq. Other choices of music can range from various types of heavy metal such as Metallica to songs from children's T.V. shows such as Barney and Sesame Street.

The annoyance or stimulating factor of the music used is further intensified when the loudness or volume level is deafeningly high. In some cases, the volume levels have been reported to be as high as 120 - 150 dB, which equates to the sound range of a chainsaw, thunderclap and even a jet take-off. In addition, the length of exposure further exacerbates the effect of the music torture by causing the disorientation of the other senses. In psychological operations and during interrogations, it's quite common for a single song to be played at extremely loud volume levels for a 24 hour period. All of these factors combined are what give music torture its effectiveness as an assault weapon.

The consequences of music torture reach far beyond discomfort and immediate pain. Many victims suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which includes symptoms such as flashbacks (or intrusive thoughts), severe anxiety, insomnia, nightmares, depression and memory lapses. Torture victims often feel guilt and shame, triggered by the humiliation they have endured. Many feel that they have betrayed themselves or their friends and family. All such symptoms are normal human responses to abnormal and inhuman treatment.

For survivors, torture often leads to lasting mental and physical health problems. Music torture in particular is difficult to prove, especially when some time has passed between the event and a medical examination. Many torturers around the world use methods designed to have a maximum psychological impact while leaving no or only minimal physical traces. Typically deaths due to torture are shown in an autopsy as being due to "natural causes" like heart attack, inflammation, or embolism due to extreme stress.

Physical problems can be as wide-ranging as sexually transmitted diseases, muscular-skeletal problems, brain injury, post-traumatic epilepsy, dementia, and chronic pain syndromes. Mental health problems are equally wide-ranging, but the most common are post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and anxiety disorder. One of the most terrible psychological effects of torture is the killing of desire and curiosity, while the core feature of the post-traumatic landscape of torture is psychic deadness.

Gauntanamo captive Binyam Mohamed, who has since returned to England after years of imprisonment and torture, was interviewed on London's Mail on Sunday. In this interview, he talked about how his sonic torture started in a Kabul prison in 2002 where he was held for eighteen months in complete darkness before his transfer to Gauntanamo in 2004. His body conveys no direct physical markings of his claims of abuse, but he relates how, "There were loudspeakers in the cell, pumping out a deafening, non-stop volume, 24 hours a day. They played the same CD for a month, The Eminem Show. When it was finished it went back to the beginning and started again. I couldn't sleep. I had no idea whether it was day or night."

Military Uses of Music Assault

History's most infamous musical assault occurred against the Branch Davidians in Waco, Texas (1993). The story goes that the FBI wore down the compound dwellers over the seven week siege, exploiting the defenselessness of the ear, by broadcasting sleep-preventing decibel levels of massively distorted music.

A few years earlier, the U.S. tried to force out Manuel Noriega from Panama City with a non-stop bombardment of heavy metal music by the likes of Black Sabbath and Judas Priest. In December 1989, the United States invaded Panama. Noriega took refuge in the Holy See's embassy on December 24, which was immediately surrounded by U.S. troops. After being continually attacked with hard rock music, including Van Halen's hit song Panama and "The Howard Stern Show" for several days, Noriega surrendered on January 3, 1990.

In Guantanamo Bay and prisons in Afghanistan and Iraq reports have surfaced claiming that interrogation techniques involve the uses of extremely loud music to soften prisoners. Reports from Guantanamo Bay also indicate that disturbing chicken noises were played over a loud-speaker for more than 25 hours to induce sleep deprivation. Loudspeaker systems are also used to communicate with enemy soldiers by intimidating them with frightening voices. Apparently, this is form of sonic attack is an effective method for getting insurgents to surrender, along with intimidating phone calls made directly to the families of insurgents and enemy commanding officers.

Amnesty International has also received reports describing various kinds of humiliation and torture prisoners and detainees the world over has endured. A post-retribution setting fic. Sidestep has assaulted the farm and other powered experiment sites and released a large number of Regenes, prisoners, and victims of the corrupt government. The Revolution has begun, and Sidestep prepares his second major strike against the establishment, by stealing a massive superweapon.

"Alert. This is the Automated Citizen Defense System of Los Diablos. All citizens must head to the designated safe zones and bunkers. Grade 3 powered activity is currently ongoing. Authorities have been alerted." The message keeps repeating through loudspeakers.

Littered streets. Handbags abandoned by their terrified owners. A few overturned cars on fire. Town Hall and it's surrounding streets have turned into a disaster area as the parade came to an abrupt end.

The government uses military parades to showcase its military might against their Russian, Chinese, and now European counterparts. This one, however, has turned to chaos, and will likely bring shame to the Government.

High above, a gigantic airship looms over the buildings, menacingly.

It hurts. And you can barely stand as is. That's why they're carrying you, one of them holding each arm.

Regenes. Prisoners. All of them experiments, just like you. Victims of the farm, and it's sister programs.

The two helping you along set you down on the chair and step back. Waiting for orders.

Orders.

Shit.

You turn to your left. Even that hurts

"Cybra, tell the twins to be ready to do some first aid?" you ask in a low voice. She nods. Her eyes flash briefly with a green light. You'll probably need surgery. The bandage should at least hold for now you hope.

Orders. Right.

"Show me where the rangers are right now"

Cestus turns to his console and activates the large viewscreens. They show cameras, looking down from your current position.

The Helios is a massive weaponized airship, mixing helium gas cells and anti-gravity technology along with state of the art medium range Laser weapons to create an impressive engine of destruction.

Unlike most secret weapons, this one was designed to be shown to the public. Exposed in the media as an example of military superiority.

Stealing it during its maiden flight during the parade was the most obvious choice.

Some screens show leftovers of the show, as people ran for their lived during the fight both above and below. Your people overpowering the crew.  The military having its weapons turned against them, thanks to Cybra and yourself. The Rangers trying to ruin it all. Ortega shooting you...

They didn't think much about your Revolution before. That is about to change.

A screen finally shows the rangers.

Herald is carrying Argent, trying to land her on top of the ship's hull. Steel is elevating behind them, using his jump jets. His jump isn't perfect, but he's surely relying on Herald picking him up if he fails. The kid's gone far with his precision flight that Chen trusts him that much.

"Set up a welcoming committee. Let's show them how we play," you ask, choking another pulse of pain.

A hatch opens, and several armed combat regenes take their places. They're not sentient. Few among you truly are. Most of them inside your inner circle. You hate to use them like that, but even they would agree on the logic of your thinking. They are living weapons, and could never be anything else. So let them fight.   

They land... and the battle breaks out.

Cybra's eye flicker with red light this time. She hasn't spoken ever since your second capture... since they changed her mind and broke her into what she is now. But she can still warn you of impending danger.

You switch your attention to the newly activating viewscreen.

Radar sweeps. Dots homing on your position.

"Fighter jets." Cestus clarifies. You can feel the pressure in everyone's minds intensifying. This is the definitive test.

"They are firing on us". Rockets. Dozens of them.

A pair of short regenes enter the room... they bring medical supplies. They walk straight to you, extending their multiple arms to take off your armor.

You hold a hand. "Not yet. Standby" you ask. The twins and your wounded self will have to wait until the crisis is over.

"Will the lasers work?" you ask. You're unsure. Everyone is. The ship's systems are encrypted with the most advanced technology.

Cybra's eyes go white... then green once more. Good.

"Activate the point defense system" you order. "We need to show them we've mastered their technology" Laser emitters all over the hull start powering up.

Cellex gets to it, making sure they are all ready to fire. He's different. Unlike the others, he never liked you.

But nobody liked Cellex. He has superhuman reflexes and durability, along with highly enhanced senses. Him operating the guns makes the most sense.

He still doesn't like you. But he thinks you're right.

"Fire as soon as they get in range!"

The emitters fire. Rockets approach your position. And then... turquoise lines surge all over the hull, each one ending at the tip of one of the missiles. A curtain of explosions covers your view. The close blasts rock the ship hard. You hold on to your chair, letting out a pained groan, as everyone braces themselves.

You look at the fight atop the hull. One of your soldiers is swept away along with Herald. Herald can just fly back onto the hull tough.  Steel has magnetized his boots, and Argent clings with her claws. Most of your own people have their own means to hold on.

Still, they've managed to incapacitate two of them.

"Enough of this. Begin the broadcast on my mark" you ask. Cybra's eyes switch color several times. You take your mask and put its own.

Showtime.

A large screen atop a building showing the ongoing alert message dies, and then reboots, showing you. Retribution. If all goes to plan, this should be infecting everything, from streaming sites to add screens in stores. Seeing your massive head on top of a skyscraper brings a weird reality to this. Not many villains ever got this far.   

"Citizens of Los Diablos!" you start, trying to input a commanding voice. The voice modulator does the rest, bringing the villain you've become to life.

"I have taken control of this war monstrosity your hidden masters and corporations have created, in the name of our Revolution!" you continue, trying to keep a rhythm. Cestus nods. Of course, he does, he's always worshiped you.

"Even now, your so-called "heroes" continue to serve the corporations and slavers who rule your destinies. Trying to extinguish our flame. But the will fail!" a slight mental push and Cybra replaces your image with images of the rangers battling, trying to get inside Helios’s hull. Trying to rescue Ortega.

The battle isn't going their way right now. They are surrounded from all sides, as more and more powered soldiers come from the hatch. Doesn't mean they are defeated but it adds to the effect of your message.  

The jet fighters turn for another pass. Good.

"But your rulers do not trust them. Watch as they cowardly sent their air-force, to destroy us all, including your rangers" The screens turn once more, to display the jets.

"They too shall fail" you state in a grim tone. Expanding your mind. Reaching the pilots. They are trained. They try to defend themselves.

But you've gone far beyond... Defenses like this are nothing. Distance is nothing. There is only your will, negating theirs.

Their flight becomes more and more erratic... spiraling... crashing down into the sea. The screens turn once more to you.

"Nothing will stop my revolution... OUR revolution" you say extending your hand to your subordinates. They're not on screen, but the gesture is symbolic. "Open your eyes, Los Diablos. I am not the enemy, I am not a conqueror. I bring truth and hope to my people. A truth that everyone can benefit from, should they choose to listen..."

"But do not test me. Or we will bring the end to everything you hold dear!" you snarl. That's Cellex's cue. Your image is replaced by Los Diablos's city hall, and audio stops.

The main super laser emitters, all four of them, begin charging.

"Repeat the last words in a loop. And give the guests a show of our prisoner" you order.

You sit back, trying to find a comfortable position for a villain who has just been shot, sitting in a command chair. You find none. You're just glad the cameras are off you right now because it's not pretty.

One of your soldiers approaches the Rangers holding a hologram emitter. Showing her the brig, where Ortega is held.. Arms and legs bound, his ranger suit thorn in several places. He doesn't look very good right now. You made sure of that. But he's alive.

"...the end to everything you hold dear!.... the end to everything you hold dear! ... the end to everything you hold dear!..." your words resonate through the loudspeakers, and possibly through every electronic video device being held trough Los Diablos right now.

Ther rangers stare at the hologram, the fighting ceased. Your threat is quite clear.

And then your weapons fire. Green lasers, turning the town hall ablaze. Windows exploding as the heat runs through each floor.

You're pretty certain they had a long time to evacuate beforehand, but some people might still die. There's simply no way for you to avoid it by now. You're out of options, and you need to send a strong message.

"They are leaving," Cestus says pointing at the screens.

Yes. The Rangers are coming down. They know they can't fight their way in. They know you'll torch the city if you have to. And they think you'll kill Ortega if they keep fighting.

Would you? That's a good darn question.

"Now... twins.. please" you whimper. You've held your act as long as you could, but now you're just falling apart. It hurts like hell... you need painkillers right now.

The twins open your suit and unceremoniously inject you with whatever it is they think your body needs. It strikes you how blunt they are. But they know their stuff.

"Engage the cloaking device... and set the thrusters to full speed... Cybra, engage interference... and.." Cestus stops you with a hand on your arm. You stop. They know what they're doing. they want you to rest now.

A single nod... before you start feeling the effects of anesthesia, and being carried off, to the infirmary.

Helios starts to fade into the cloudy sky of Los Diablos, engaging its thrusters and bringing its Revolution elsewhere.  

Leaving behind a torched building, and a team of heroes that's now one man short.

You feel your eyes drift ...

(...) Dreams. People. The parade is back... they march... towards the burning town hall building. THeir bodies catch on fire as they enter. But they keep marching on. You make them. They want to scream, but you silence them. They just keep walking into the fire (...)

You hear a voice in your head.

".... ok?"

"Hmm?" You complain. You keep your eyes closed. You're too sleepy.

"Cyrus!"

Stupid dreams.

"Cyrus please..."

You manage to open an eye. You're at the infirmary. It takes a few seconds for you to recap how you got there.

"Cyrus, can you hear me?"

OK, that's not a dream. You turn. The man in the bed next to you... .

Ortega. Both arms and legs still bound, but now bare-chested and all of his wounds have been carefully cleaned and bandaged. Some cables connected to his arm are recharging his battery too.

"What... are you doing here?" you ask in disbelief

"You captured me" he points out.

Oh. Right. You captured him, then locked him up in the brig once you secured the ship. And you ordered the Twins to look after him, then went to the command sector to deal with the situation. And of course, you also asked the twins to patch you up.

You didn't expect they would bring him here. You even thought you'd meet him back at the brig, with full costume, once you were healed.. maybe taunt him a bit... make a speech...

But no. The twins have little interest in anything other than their work. It’s surprising they even gathered the will to actively support the revolution instead of just joining as some of the non-sentients you now control. 

It’s only natural they just put you together in the same infirmary, one bed next to the other.

"That... thing... was operating on you? The one with the four eyes and many arms"

"The twins," you say.

"Ah... They uh... worried me. I thought they were... harming you"

"No. they are.. medical prodigies. They were operating on my ..." you narrow your gaze. "You shot me" you accuse finally.

"You stole an experimental airship with nuclear capacity" he replies, matching your accusing tone.

"I did. And no one could stop me. Not you, not the police, not the military or the farm. Not even the air-force. My team is clearly better than yours Ortega."

He instantly looks annoyed. You hit a nerve apparently. Assaulting the courthouse was a distraction while the combat regenes waited for the right moment to jump onto the airship with their modified grappling hooks.

Still, a distraction that led to an all-out battle with the Rangers. Retribution wasn't alone though. Cestus, Cellex, and Aegis were with you.

Aegis. You thought she was dead all those years ago. Not quite... The farm captured the former villain, and you met once more after you were taken in following Heartbreak.

She's consumed with revenge, and your former enemy is now one of your strongest supporters.

Together, the four of you beat the crap out of them. 

You defeated them. Your team was more orderly. More disciplined. Acted and moved as one.

And when they realized Helios was your true objective, when you cued everyone to flee and the automated alarm started telling people to evacuate...

Ortega shot you. You remember, falling backward, as Cestus held you. Aegis beating Ortega senseless, Cellex carrying him over to your extraction point. You and Cestus hurrying behind them...

A modified energy gun. Went right through your armor. Designed specifically to take you down most likely.

You could be dead.

Dead because you keep playing games with the enemy.

"You know you're lying to them, right?" he asks. "There's no way this revolution of yours will end well."

You hesitate for a split second. He has a point, but some lies are necessary.

"Maybe not. But it doesn't seem like we're losing right now, does it? You on the other hand..."

"Come on..." he struggles a bit with his bindings, trying to fully turn to face you. "If you keep this up you're going to end up dead Cyrus!"

"So you're concerned about me ending up dead?" you ask incredulously. "Gee I wonder who gave me this then because it clearly can't be you," you say looking at your wound.

"I just... " He looks upwards trying to phrase whatever it is he's going to say in his mind. "I just wanted to stop you!. You killed innocent people today, Cyrus!"

"Oh please. The evacuation alert had been going for a long while when we fired. Anyone in that building was either a soldier or plain stupid."

"Seems you think this is a war"

"It is a war dumbass. And I try to only kill enemy combatants. Unlike your government"

"My government?"

"Yeah. Your government. And I get it, It's pointless to talk to you about it. You're just incapable of seeing it from our point of view"

“And what point is that? Destroying everything? There are better ways!”

“Wow... you really believe that?”

"You have to stop! Why can't you see it?"

"You don't get it, do you? We're not going to be able to go to the courts or even jail. If we stop the fight, they'll just kill us. If we lose, they'll also kill us. And if we hide, they'll find us and guess what? Kill us. And even if they didn't, we'd go back to being their lab rats, their slaves, their fucking mindless drones. We've had enough"

"I..."

"No. Save it. I don't need to listen to any more of your shit. I don't care. Also, you're a prisoner, and we'll have to decide what to do with you now. So see you later Charge." you try to sit. It hurts, and you're dizzy, but you can't do this anymore. You can't keep talking to him right now.  The twins move to stop you, but you don't. You stand, realizing too late you're completely utterly naked.

Shit. Embarrassing. And you wanted to give him a villainous speech. 

(Maybe next time?)

You just take your pants and head for the door.

"Cyrus stop! We can..."

You don't. You slam the door behind you.

"...I'm sorry I shot you," Ortega says after you leave. Though only he and the twins get to hear those words.   

The ship is huge, you can't help thinking as you enter your own quarters. Captain's quarters.

You dress up. Your left side hurts so much...

You were stupid. Weak. If you hadn't twisted your plan to avoid unnecessary casualties, none of this would have happened.

What are you trying to prove? That you can be a villain while still following a hero's code?

If you keep it up, maybe Ortega will be right. You'll get everyone killed next time. You’ll get killed too. And you can’t die right now. Not until you set things right. That’s your destiny. The only unmovable, inevitable thing you can trust. You used to count Ortega there. But he’s not lived up to the image you had of him.  

Maybe you need to stop being selfish and think of the bigger picture.  

Stop being weak. Stop fighting a war with a hand tied to your back.

You tried. And where did that get you?

The one person you trusted (loved) all your life tried to kill you today. To save some soldiers wanting to enslave you once more. He was fine with ignoring your Villain career as long as it was just robbing museums. Auctions. Fighting some random heroes. But once things got real, he picked a side. And it’s clearly not yours.   

You look at yourself in the mirror.

You hate what you see. But you don’t fear it anymore.

You don't hide your tattoos anymore. No. Not after the breakout, when you released so many from the farm. You make a point to show them, to give them purpose. Meaning. Accept what you are, and move on. Make a mess against those who would oppress them. Use them. (But aren’t you using them too, you wonder?)  

You let the world see who you are that day, You revealed the wrong they did to your kind.

And they didn't care. It wasn't like you expected. There was no immediate stop to the experiments. no release of the prisoners everywhere. No massive human rights movement surging. 

There are only two fundamental truths you learned. 

You are not humans. And they will keep chasing you like rabid dogs as long as they possibly can. 

Maybe it's time to finally bite back.

Date: March 23rd Entry: Over all behavior and observation

The other day many hunters returned to Astera with findings of an Old World monster. Many have been quick to deduce what monster this is. The one and only DevilJho. This raises many problems for the fleets but also for the ecosystem and environment. Many hunters including myself have been asked to go out and research the DevilJho sightings. This puts my research on other monsters on hold for now. I have only been up against a DevilJho a handful of times anyway. (I could count how many on one hand of a Wyvarian.) So I figure it might be best to write out this report, as in all honesty the DevilJho isn’t my forte of monster knowledge. Prehaps making the comparison of the New World DevilJho to the Old World isn’t a good idea. Thus this report is strictly on the DevilJho found in the New World, the Savage DevilJho will not be talked about, should it be discovered in the new world then a foot note entry will be made. 

With the alert out about The World Eater in the forest it was shut down unless you were in the Researchers Commission. Though I am part of the fifth fleet I am still in a grey area. nonetheless I was granted access to the forest, despite already being asked to research the Brute Wyvern. 

Yesterday was my encounter with DevilJho in the New World. It picked up a Great Jagras into its maw and at first I thought it was swinging it around to kill and eat it as usual. It was then I noticed it was using the Great Jagras as a tool to try and attack me with. Watching the Jagras struggle was hard to watch, I wanted its suffering to end. My battle with the DevilJho had forced my hand when it attacked. Into the fight I was able to get the monster to fall over and release the Great Jagras. Watching the lesser monster run away to safety was the highlight of my day.

Today was another encounter but this time I watched from afar. Out in the Wild Spire I was doing some tracking of DevilJho. Trying to understand its arrival and how it got here to this island. A Bazelgeuse landed in the area and DevilJho took quick notice of it. I expected the two to be pretty matched, I was partially right. DevilJho was quick to grab the flying wyvern in its mouth and slam it onto the ground. Followed by a few tosses over itself before Bazelgeuse got up, DevilJho quickly tossed itself into the other monster only to go under its neck area. Causing all the bomb scales on Bazelgeuse ’s neck to explode, this knocked DevilJho back and gave Bazelgeuse time to escape.'

Brute Wyvern DevilJho

Physiology Size:  1803.0 cm - 4097.8 cm Title: World Eater Element: Dragon Habitat: Ancient Forest, Wildspire waste, Rotten Vale, Coral highlands, Elder’s recess, (Any type of habitat.)

DevilJho is a large bipedal Brute Wyvern in a uniform field grey or forest green color while also being littered with scars with a muscular upper body. They are covered in rows of scutes that reach a peak height on its back and tail. It carries powerful jaws with rows of teeth sitting inside the roof of its mouth and on the outside. A thin snout but large lower jaw with rows of teeth growing out of its chin. With such large and powerful jaws it also boasts a large tail to balance it out, allowing the DevilJho’s jaws to grow into massive gaping maws. With its large tail to keep balance, this requires small and rather useless forelimbs... An evolutionary trade-off due to the size of such a monster. Severing the tail will cause DevilJho to stagger due to the loss of its own balance. It is supported on powerful yet oddly thin looking legs. The claws on DevilJho are a deep red color.  When a DevilJho becomes enraged its muscles swell and open up its old wounds. In this state, sections of the skin take on a bright red coloration.

Behavior They have no territory and are nomadic, all ways searching for their next meal. Have a high body heat that brings about a high metabolism. Forcing them to constantly need to eat, meaning anything that moves including its own severed tail, other DevilJho and even all ready captured monsters. They live short lives due to how many battles they get into because of all ways being on the hunter. If given the chance these Brute Wyverns will eat other monsters to extinction. Putting entire ecosystems in danger, some say their potential damage could be matched to that of an Elder Dragon. DevilJho’s hunger seemed to be its diving force. No wonder it is given the title ‘World Eater’.

A highly aggressive predictor all ways on its search of prey, few are more aggressive then DevilJho. The monster is easily provoked and will attack instantly with little to no regard of their target. The DevilJho will attack even when it is weak and limping with all most no signs of stopping.

When put into a rage, its muscles swell and break open old wounds. Due to the swelling and opening of said wounds this puts the monster in a lot of pain, the pain only feeds into its blind rage. Continuing in its enraged state the monster has a range of weapons it can use against its foes and prey alike. 

Though it has a massive size and sharp claws, DevilJho mostly uses its jaws to inflict damage. Capable of producing a strange clouded emission which can be spewed out of the mouth at hunters and other monsters alike. Said ‘breath’ attack with afflict one’s person with what is called Dragon Blight. When dealing this attack it will move its head from on direction to the other, making a full 180 sweep across the area.

Other attacks include stomping the ground to stagger its opponents, swinging its massive tail, running at high speeds to bomb bard or simply jumping onto them. At times the Brute Wyvern will dig up rocks (This changes depending on the region) with his jaws and hurl them at the target. DevilJho is powerful enough take on Bazelgeuse and even a Rathalos, along with lesser large monsters such as Great Jaggras and Great Girros. Going as far as to use these lesser large monsters for yet another way of attacking.

Hunting Reasoning for hunting DevilJho is pretty just. Its to protect ecosystems of invites its self into. Though Apex predators may rest at the top of the food chain, they still have a role to play. Animals are adapted to predators with in their area. Often equipped with evolutionary tools to help escape them, invasive monsters ruin this. In short, they are up against another creature they have never seen before. On top of these animals being hunted to extinction, this leaves the predators in the area to starve or invade other territories. Taking down all the predators in the area leaves smaller animals to over populate. Aside for is deadly aggression, a DevilJho has the strength to single handedly destroy ecosystems if given the chance. DevilJho is often a high priority in observation because of its potential devastation. Its hunger has even been known to drive it into civilizations and villages.

When searching for DevilJho the quickest way to find it is the chipped teeth that become littered on the ground when it rubs it chin against the dirt, creating grooves into the ground. Removing old warn down or broken teeth to let knew ones grow and take their place. Some will say that doing this is a way of making territory, but that implies the beast has one. No matter its reason, the teeth are a sure sign one of these brute wyverns are in the area. Dead animals and left over meals that had been fallen to DevilJho are another that will help your Scoutflies tune themselves to the scent of the monster. Marking its tracks for last. The World Eater as three toes per foot and a spine like claw on the back. This claw could be reminiscent of a no longer used raptor talon due to evolution. DevilJho tacks are much larger then that of an Anjanath.

Hunters looking to take on DevilJho for the first time should take extreme caution in dealing with such a creature. Unlike most monsters the tail is not a weakness despite that i can be severed. Leaving the monster to quickly lose balance. Its head, underbelly to chest area are the weak points of this monster. The top of its back is another point of interest but not as the others listed. Leaving both its teeth clustered head and underside breakable. Thus forcing hunters into position to attack the head or dance around its legs.

An enraged DevilJho can inflict Dragon Blight, when dealing its breath attack it safest place to be is under its legs or far away. As the stream of breath is a longer mid-range attack. The monster is weak to Thunder and Dragon elements. Be mindful of its massive tail and abilities to leap or throw rocks if you are away.

Though the saliva of DevilJho is harmless on closed skin, being binned and bitten can cause infection if taken care of quickly. Most likely from the amount it eats and bacteria in its mouth being rather potent thanks to the ominousness breath attack it has. Well armored hunters should not have to worry about this side from being rattled and taking more then a few dents or bruises. Over all, DevilJho requires more careful positioning due to weak point locations and types of attacks.

 Conclusion  The DevilJho in the New World is a spitting image of the ones found in the Old World. How they got here? I can’t say, I am not here to research them. With fleets arriving here over forty years ago its hard to say that such a monster could be missed. Then again its only the forth and fifth fleets that brought the most bulk of hunters. I am not the one to deem if they are the same as the ones back home. I can only turn in this report to let the Guild decide.

Explore the majesty of Arches National Park

Several side trip tours are available on the “Rockies to the Red Rocks” itinerary. One we can definitely recommend is a bus tour through the splendor of Utah’s Arches National Park.

Originally a cattle ranch in the early 20th century, it was designated a national park in 1971. Visitors come from around the world to experience the grandeur of the park, which boasts over 2,000 arch formations, 483 species of plants, 186 species of birds and 52 species of mammals.

Marvel at Delicate Arch, Arches National Park

Among the most iconic arch formation in this national park is the 52-foot-tall Delicate Arch, billed as one of the world’s most famous natural stone arches. A bus tour can take you there as part of the Rocky Mountaineer optional itinerary.

The arch is visible from a viewpoint below, but you can opt to hike the 1.5 miles of moderately difficult hiking to the top. There you will be rewarded with an unbeatable view of this majestic arch and the surrounding landscape.

A classic ghost town

In the 1880s, Cisco was a railway servicing point that provided coal to the steam locomotives that plowed through this remote region just outside of Moab. Today, Cisco is a ghost town, having been abandoned in the 1970s when the interstate bypassed it. History buffs may enjoy a glimpse at what remains, for a classic look back in time.

Savor the views along Ruby Canyon

Tunnel vision

As the Rocky Mountaineer approaches Denver, we enter the Moffat Tunnel, built in 1928 by Denver banker and visionary David Moffat. His dream was to have a railroad directly west from Denver cutting through the Continental Divide. You’ll pass through this historic, 6.2-mile tunnel on your voyage.

In 1979, the tunnel was designated a National Historic Engineering Landmark.

Explore Colorado’s elusive Gore Canyon

The most difficult challenge you’ll have on this trip is taking your eyes away from the window and the scenic landscapes that await you at every turn. As you enter Gore Canyon, you’ll be met with towering views on red cliffs, some 1,000 feet high, that rim this canyon along the upper Colorado River.

The canyon has no road and can only be viewed from the train and from rafting and whitewater boats. Its raging rapids make it one of the most exhilarating and dangerous river rafting venues in Colorado, and you can catch the action right from your panoramic train window.

David Moffat didn’t stop after constructing the Moffat tunnel. He had the vision to connect Denver and Salt Lake City, which required laying tracks along a steep climb up the front range of the Colorado Rockies.

A fitting end to an unforgettable journey

It seems appropriate that we would end our unforgettable train adventure at Denver’s historic Union Station, originally built in 1881. The station is now part of a mixed-use development, which includes a hotel, several restaurants and retailers, and a picturesque vintage train hall (the Great Hall a.k.a. “Denver’s Living Room”).

Denver is also one of a limited number of U.S. cities that offer very reasonable transportation to the airport via their comfortable, fast and efficient rapid transfer system you can board directly from Union Station.

‘Jaw-dropping’ forecast is warning sign of climate change’s future impact in Washington, scientists say

It’s a forecast so hot that it left some seasoned meteorologists initially in disbelief.

Weekend temperatures are expected to approach 100 degrees in Seattle, top 109 in Portland and reach 115 in Eastern Washington — threatening to topple historical records and upend people’s lives. 

“Is this just the models being wonky, or is this a real deal?” said Joe Boomgard-Zagrodnik, a postdoctoral researcher in agricultural meteorology at Washington State University, describing his reaction to initial temperature readouts.

When he assessed the data himself, “it was jaw-dropping.” 

Climate scientists and meteorologists say the forthcoming heat wave — which could persist into next week — is a manifestation of climate change and a concerning signal of what they expect more frequently in the Pacific Northwest, which is poorly adapted to extreme heat.

“This is pretty early in the season to be experiencing so many days where temperatures are record breaking. It’s worrisome. It’s just June,” said Deepti Singh, a climate scientist and associate professor at WSU Vancouver. “This should be a warning sign for us that we’re experiencing the impacts of climate change right now.”

The science of heat

The weather pattern bringing scorching hot temperatures to the Northwest is the result of a large ridge of high atmospheric pressure sometimes called a heat dome.

High pressure systems suppress storms, offering clear skies with full sun, and they act as a cap and trap heat near the surface.  

“Air is sinking and it’s warming as it sinks,” Boomgard-Zagrodnik said. 

This weather pattern itself is extreme, but not unprecedented, said Washington State Climatologist Nick Bond. He does not predict that patterns of pressure will change in the coming decades, though he acknowledges that research is still developing. 

What has changed is that the region has warmed nearly 2 degrees since 1900, according to the 2018 national climate assessment by U.S. Global Change Research Program, crafted with input from 13 federal agencies. 

“Now, when you have heat waves, when that baseline has moved up … it’s that much more severe,” Bond said. 

Heat waves are projected to increase in frequency and intensity across the country, according to the climate assessment. 

Researchers say Seattle and other areas of the Pacific Northwest are poorly adapted to extreme heat. Residents are not physically acclimated to heat and fewer than half have home air conditioning, one of the lowest rates among big U.S. cities. 

And nighttime temperatures, which often provided a respite on hot Seattle days, are less reliably comfortable. In the Northwest, overnight low temperatures are actually warming more rapidly than daytime temperatures.

In the Puget Sound region, average minimum temperatures have climbed between 3 and 4 degrees, Bond said.

Because this weekend’s bout with scorching temperatures follows relatively recent rain, Boomgard-Zagrodnik said he expected little relief at night.

“It’s going to be pretty bad, probably, because of the high humidity” and light evening winds, Boomgard-Zagrodnik said, adding that he would be surprised if overnight temperatures dropped below 70 degrees.

Respites from the heat

The heat wave could have profound effects on Washington state. 

“Hospitals in past heat events have seen marked increases in heat stroke, heart attacks and kidney failure,” said Addison Houston, an environmental health mitigation & response planner with Public Health Seattle & King County, citing an analysis of emergency calls in King County. 

Vulnerable people, such as children, older adults and people with underlying health conditions, need access to cooling during heat waves, said Singh, the WSU climate scientist. 

Seattle is offering at least 13 air-conditioned public library branches, 10 wading pools, nine spray parks and eight lifeguarded beaches as spots to cool down.

“Often I hear: Go to the coast or go to the Cascades,” Singh said. ”If you’re well off, sure, that’s an option, but that’s not an option for everybody.” 

Air quality could worsen, Singh said, because heat and sunlight can intensify chemical reactions that create surface-level ozone, which can inflame the respiratory system.

Any power outages would exacerbate difficulties for those who lose electricity for fans or air conditioning, but utility officials in the Pacific Northwest say that’s unlikely to happen.

Officials at the Bonneville Power Administration, which operates the regional transmission system that delivers much of the electricity to regional utilities, say they should be able to get through the peak heat days without service interruptions.

The Portland-based BPA has benefitted from the return to service of the Columbia Generation Station, a nuclear power plant outside of Richland that is the third-largest generator of electricity in the region and had been down for more than 40 days for refueling.

The hydroelectric dams along the Columbia River, which collectively represent the largest source of the region’s power, have shifted from spring to summer operations, which reduces spill for fish and enables more overall power generation.

“At this time, we thoroughly expect to be able to meet the load demands of our customers,” said Kevin Wingert, a BPA spokesman.

Seattle City Light, which owns hydroelectric dams that provide about half of its power, also appears in good shape.

“We expect to be able to meet projected demand with the high temps forecasted for this weekend and are not anticipating impacts to the grid,” said Julie Moore, a Seattle City Light spokesperson.

Puget Sound Energy’s system is “currently performing well,” and the utility plans to meet all demand with its own generation assets, according to Janet Kim, a company spokesperson.

Still, utility officials say conservation always is encouraged and can include opening windows at night to allow cooler air in, limiting use of appliances that generate heat and turning off ceiling fans when you leave a room.

Extreme heat also increases the potential of wildfires and smoke. 

Unlike other parts of the Western U.S., Washington’s mountain ranges built a hearty snowpack over winter.

“There’s still a fair amount of snow above 5,000 feet,” Bond said. But at lower elevations, mixed grasslands on the east flank of the Cascades are “ready to go” and catch fire, he added. 

The high pressure system is expected to quell winds when temperatures are peaking, which reduces the chances of runaway fires, but also cuts back on power generation by wind turbines that are an increasingly important part of the region’s energy mix.

Next week, as the heat wave eases, winds are expected to pick up and fire dangers will increase, with the landscape baked in heat.

With the robust snowpack, irrigators on the big river systems, such as the Columbia and Yakima, should have sufficient water for orchards and vineyards, Bond said. But portions of Washington remain in a drought, which is particularly severe in the southeastern corner of the state. Crops that often are not irrigated, like wheat and barley, already are suffering.

Bond said climate models are at consensus that the remaining summer months will be warmer than average. He expects stream temperatures on some of the state’s smaller rivers to become “dangerously warm” for salmon and trout later in the summer. 

Disparate impacts

The forthcoming heat event won’t be felt evenly. 

Boomgard-Zagrodnik expects the broad heat dome to suppress large-scale wind patterns, such as the onshore flow typical to the region. But with Puget Sound waters still relatively cool, local winds and geography could create huge differences in how people feel over the weekend.

“Islands and uneven coastlines — the topography and where you’re located relative to the water is going to make a big difference in whether you’ll have the chance to get up to 95, 100 or more, or whether you’ll get a nice breeze in the afternoon,” he said. 

The Whidbey and San Juan Islands are likely to pick up a sea breeze, whereas areas south of Seattle, like Olympia, will be shielded from the cooling flow.  

In Portland, the National Weather Service forecasts temperatures rising to 104 degrees on Saturday, reaching 109 on Sunday before easing back to 104 on Monday. 

This early summer heat, if it reached those levels, would blow away records for three consecutive days. Portland’s all-time high is 107, reached twice in August 1981 and once in July 1965. The record for June is 102.

In urban areas, heat does not affect everyone equally. Analysis of temperature records in King County on a hot day last July showed heat impacts varied widely in communities mere miles apart. Trees mitigated heat while industry and dense buildings intensified it.

Communities affected by other environmental health concerns, such as poverty and pollution, are among the hottest communities, the mapping suggests.

Scientists for decades have warned that our reliance on fossil fuels is warming our world. Now, they say, we’re taking the heat.

THE MYSTERY SHOPPERS: Colin and Wendy are mystery shoppers who visit hotels undercover to check they're keeping to their standards. A lack of nibbles in the bar or newspapers which they order but don't turn up and Colin and Wendy marks the hotel down.

HIGHS AND LOWS: Working in a hotel is a bit like being on stage. The highs come when you meet your goals, the lows when you fail to make a customer happy. For the receptionist, drunken guests are the biggest problem. Working in the hotel and catering industry takes lots of energy and the ability "to talk to anyone".

THE OTHER SIDE OF HOTEL WORK: By no means all hotel workers find their jobs satisfying. A foreign hotel worker describes experiences of outrageous sexual harassment and bullying. She says she would never let her child work in the industry.

Needle and Pain Free Vaccinations

The development of a needle-free vaccination delivery system has been identified by the Grand Challenges in Global Health (GCGH) initiative as one of the major challenges facing global health care today.

Millions of needles and syringes are used each day in health care. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 12 billion injections are given each year. Only about 5% are used in the delivery of vaccines for immunization and prevention of infectious diseases. Even though vaccinations have saved lives over the years, there are some hurdles to overcome. One of these is the use of needles or "sharps" to deliver the vaccines.

According to Myron Levine of the Center for Vaccine Development, University of Maryland School of Medicine and member of the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI) "three fundamental themes remain in common worldwide: first, high immunization coverage of target populations generally must be attained for maximal public health impact; second, most current vaccines are administered parenterally using a needle and syringe; third, there is a broad recognition of the need to find ways to administer vaccines without the use of 'sharps' (that is, needles and syringes)."

The disadvantages of needle delivery of vaccine include:

(1) Pain and irritation of vaccination site. A large fraction of our population is scared of needles, probably as consequence of a previous bad experience. The majority of patients at the delivery end of vaccination are very young children under the age of two and needle pricks in this patient population can cause a lot of pain and distress. Needles may also cause discomfort at the injection site long after the shot has been applied.

(2) Lack of compliance. The World Health Organization's Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) has recommended six basic vaccines for infants in developing countries: diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus toxoids (DPT), bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG), and attenuated polio and measles. In developed countries such as the US, more vaccinations are required by health authorities. However, for the so-called "herd immunity" to work, a certain % of the population must comply with vaccination schedule.

(3) Safety. Vaccination with needles produces dangerous infectious waste that come with serious health threats to both patient and health care professionals. The reuse of unsterilized needles has facilitated the transmission of blood-borne infections such as HIV and hepatitis.

(4) Speed and efficiency. Recently, the threats of bioterrorism and pandemic flu have highlighted the need of fast, easy and safe vaccine delivery to the masses should the need arise. Definitely, vaccination using syringes and needles was not designed for these situations.

(5) Cost-efficiency and logistics. Doing away with syringes and needles can make vaccinations in less developed countries cheaper and more accessible. Syringes and needles need to be transported and stored for vaccination purposes. Injectible vaccines need to be refrigerated during transport.

Although needle-free delivery systems exist for many drugs, vaccines present a challenge because they usually consist of large molecules that cannot be easily delivered transdermally. Myron Levine summarized in a review article the different methods of administrating needle-free vaccines.

(1) Vaccines delivered through mucosal surfaces. Though theoretically possible, this form of delivery hasn't caught on except perhaps with the use of the nasal spray.

(2) Oral vaccines. Specific vaccines can be given orally in the form of pills. Oral polio vaccine has already been around for awhile. Other vaccines can be delivered via this route including certain types of cholera vaccines and the new rotavirus vaccines. However, this delivery route presents some problems for very young infants who might not be able to swallow properly and whose digestive system may not be able to withstand the effects of the vaccines.

(3) Nasal vaccines. The nasal vaccine through the respiratory tract is a very popular alternative to the flu shot. The FluMist" nasal spray, made from live, attenuated, cold-adapted vaccine, has been approved by the FDA and is delivered using a single-use spraying device through the nostrils.

(4) Aerosol vaccine. This mode of administration through the respiratory tract has been tested for measles vaccine. This is an alternative to the nasal spray and can be used with liquid aerosol and dry power for mass immunization.

(5) Needle-free percutaneous jet injection. This device works by propelling liquid through a small skin pore under high pressure. The liquid is then transported to the dermis and underlying tissues and muscles. There are multiple dose injectors available, making this type of delivery fast and practical for mass immunizations. However, it has the disadvantage of a high incidence of local irritation at the vaccination site as well as the possibility of transmission of infectious diseases.

(6) Transcutaneous delivery. This is commonly known as the "vaccine patch" and is delivered via the skin. The adhesive patch is applied after a preliminary hydration, directly on the skin. The occlusive patch makes the skin permeable to the vaccine. The cutaneously applied antigens are then taken up by Langerhans cells found in the upper layer (epidermis) of the skin allowing the immune-processing cells to migrate to the lymph nodes.

In recent years, several biotech companies have invested millions of dollars in developing, testing and finalizing different forms of needle-free delivery systems for all kinds of drugs, not only vaccines. The most promising of the needle-free vaccination systems at this juncture is Trans Cutaneuous Immunization (TCI).

Several advantages of the TCI have been identified. including cost-effective, safe, fast distribution, easy storage (can be stockpiled!) and easy administration, with the potential for self-administration zayıflama kürü.

In 2007, American researchers tested the efficacy of TCI with Clostridium difficile toxoid A in mice, with positive results. The bacteria C. difficile is the leading cause of nosocomial diarrhea, e.g. infectious diarrhea transmitted in the hospital setting. Also in 2007, Johns Hopkins University researchers tested the protective efficacy of TCI with the heat-labile toxin (LT) of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC). The results showed that the patch "induced anti-toxin immune responses that did not prevent but mitigated the illness.

Apollo Life Sciences has developed and patented a needle-free drug delivery and in May 2007 it released the results of preliminary studies on needle-free transdermal delivery of tetanus toxoid vaccine in mice. Apollo has developed the non-invasive transdermal carrier, TransD" which works by delivering "a protein-laden water layer across the skin and into the surrounding dermal and sub-dermal layers. It has potential to replace injections for biodrugs based on molecules such as interferon, growth hormones and anti-TNF (tumor necrosis factor)."

The TCI developed by the biotech firm Iomai, now owned by the Austrian company Intercell has recently made the headlines. Drug Delivery Report described how it works: "Administration is a two-step process. First, the skin is prepared by placing the device on the patient's arm and pulling a tab. The tab draws a mildly abrasive substance across the skin, making a painless and nearly imperceptible dent and simultaneously leaving an ink mark to indicate where the patch should be applied. The patient then wears an adhesive patch [with the vaccine] for several hours." The innovative design company Ideo helped designed the patch which required removal of an extremely thin layer of skin (about one-thousandth of an inch!).

Currently, Intercell's vaccine patch against traveler's diarrhea or the so-called Montezuma's Revenge is showing promise. The disease is a major cause of diarrhea among travelers, with symptoms ranging from stomach cramps to vomiting and diarrhea. Dr. Herbert DuPont of the University of Texas is one of the researchers involved in testing the vaccine. He told Reuters: "I think it's one of the most exciting new developments in travel medicine. People could buy this and put it on themselves whenever they take a trip. It is the most convenient form of immunization I have ever seen."

The vaccine has been tested on visitors travelling to Guatemala and Mexico and showed 70% efficacy against traveler's diarrhea. In another field study of 170 travelers as part of the vaccine patch Phase II trials, the vaccine patch reduced the risk of developing moderate to severe traveler's diarrhea by 75%. Phase III clinical trials are in process. If approved, this will be the first vaccine to prevent traveler's diarrhea. The study results were published in the Lancet and conclude that "the vaccine patch is safe and feasible, with benefits to the rate and severity of travellers' diarrhea."

A second promising Intercell vaccine patch is targeted against the pandemic flu. If successful, the patch will expand the limited vaccine supplies by allowing fewer or lower doses of vaccine. The program is funded by a United States Department of Health and Human Services contract." The patch contains a vaccine made from the H5N1 influenza virus. Results of a Phase I/II trials showed that a small amount of the vaccine triggered a protective immune response in 73% of the study participants. Phase II trials are expected to begin in 2009.

Vaccination and immunization technology has changed a lot in recent years as it tries to meet the health challenges facing both developed and developing countries.
