I just went through my friend Chib’s Curious Cat feed and usually it’s a very entertaining and enlightening thing to do, but yesterday what I managed to see over there made my mind go into hyperalert mode, though certainly not Chib’s fault. As it happened, apparently the talking point of “Hanyu is not the best at anything” is, once again, making the rounds. Of course the point doesn’t stop there, it quickly evolves, or devolves, more like, into how he can’t deservedly be regarded as the best skater out there if he is not unsurpassed in any particular thing, and how he’s a “jack of all trades master of none”, culminating in this sentiment from one anon, which was the final straw that completely shattered my hitherto camel-back-like tolerance:

Now, I have tried to debunk this theory before, but in hindsight, I realized that it was likely not the right approach. When it’s time to go trail-bashing, the ZR2 has a leg up over all of its midsize rivals except, perhaps, the Gladiator. Locking differentials front and rear help it get out of tough situations. It’s also graced with plenty of underbody shielding and other features like hill-descent control. Rock rails along each sill are great for protecting the body from jagged terrain, though coupled with that elevated ride height they make getting into and out of this truck challenging if you don’t want to soil your pant legs with dirt or mud. A pair of bright red recovery hooks punctuates the ZR2’s front end and is at the ready should you get in too deep while off-roading.

The ZR2 is available with a variety of appearance-enhancing options groups, but if additional capability is what you crave, consider the $5,750 Bison package. This upgrade turns an already capable truck into a real mountain goat. It gets you a bunch of kit from American Expedition Vehicles including a special front bumper with provisions to mount a winch, boron-steel skid plates for added underbody protection, unique fender flares, special 17-inch wheels and more.

The Chevy Colorado’s fundamentals are mostly impressive, but its interior and tech are what bely its advanced age. For better or worse, this truck’s interior is basically the same as it was five or six years ago, which means you get plenty of so-so hard plastics and leather that feels more like vinyl than anything shucked off a living creature. The dashboard’s overall layout is also as conservative as a Southern Baptist, with no frills or interesting design flourishes to be had. The advantage of this simple, honest layout, however, is that all the secondary buttons and knobs are easy to reach and see, with the climate controls being mounted up high and the seat-heater switches in an obvious place.

The Colorado is comfortable, with the front chairs adjusting nicely to accommodate taller folks, even if the cushions are quite flat. The crew-cab body’s rear bench seat is a bit on the upright side, par for the midsize-truck course, but it can fit a couple of 6-foot-tall adults without much trouble. The lower cushions also flip up, revealing a storage cubby for stashing things away from prying eyes.

Like its overall interior design, this truck’s tech is behind the times. Sure, my tester’s 8-inch dashboard screen is nice enough, home to a speedy and clean infotainment system that’s a pleasure to use, but integrated navigation costs an additional $995, even on the high-end ZR2 model. Fortunately, if you don’t feel like shelling out an extra grand of hard-earned scratch, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are ready, willing and standard across the board.

But no matter how much you spend, you cannot get push-button start in this truck. Instead, every Colorado comes with an old-fashioned stick-and-twist key. For you kids that aren’t familiar, you take a thin piece of metal, jab it into a receptacle on the steering column and turn it to fire the engine up. Similarly, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and lane centering are not offered, but at least keyless entry is available on even the most-basic Work Truck model, and you can get the Colorado with remote start.

Despite its years, the Colorado is still a good midsize truck.

Speaking of money, a base, rear-wheel-drive version of this truck with the four-cylinder engine starts at 26 grand and change. With many more features and a crew-cab body, the Colorado ZR2 tested here checks out for a much-steeper $44,890, including $1,195 in destination fees. The sole option padding that figure is the paint job, which costs $495.

The Chevy Colorado’s gray hairs are certainly showing, but despite its age, this truck remains a good option — one I prefer in some ways to the Ranger and Gladiator. For general-purpose use, the Honda Ridgeline is still the best all-around midsize pickup in my humble opinion, but if you want something with more rugged looks and a lot more off-road capability, the ZR2 could fit the bill.

Phone functionality, charging usability, battery life and battery longevity

For more than ten years, smartphones have confidently dominated in popularity in the consumer electronics segment. Of course, companies adequately respond to demand by offering a huge assortment of different models in all price segments. Today, more than 600 companies design and manufacture these devices. But almost 80% of the global market belongs to only 10 companies. This list includes South Korean Samsung (19%) and LG (3%), American Apple (12%), Finnish Nokia (1%) and Chinese Huawei (13%, including Honor), Xiaomi (9%), Oppo (9%), Vivo (8%), Lenovo (3%, including Motorola), OnePlus(1%), and Tecno (1%). As a result, this situation provoked an unprecedented competition level, forcing companies to invest huge resources in innovative technologies. In turn, innovation provides an extension of functionality, which is traditionally one of the essential components of the competitiveness for any device. As a consequence, the phone quickly transformed into a pocket PC with excellent media capabilities. Projector mobile phones with a projector function, cameraphones with a complex but highly effective digital image processing, liquid-cooled gaming smartphones perfectly illustrate this trend.

As a result, the companies constantly improve specs of their components, including screen resolution and size, processor performance, etc. The performance of the latest Kirin 990 5G or Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 plus processors demonstrates the swiftness of this process.

Phone longevity vs battery longevity

Unfortunately, these positive aspects have a flip side. For example, a processor and a large screen consume a lot of energy during shooting (digital processing), watching, games, etc. As a result, companies increase the battery capacity and developing energy-saving algorithms. Today, many flagships already use batteries with a capacity of 4500-5000 mAh. Moreover, the Blackview P10000 Pro uses a battery with an unprecedented capacity of 11,000 mAh.

Android 10 dark theme saves up to 50% charge for OLED screens. However, modern smartphones rarely work even for one day in energy-intensive modes. As a result, the user is often forced to recharge the battery, rapidly consuming its resource (about 500 full cycles). As known, the battery degradation after 500 cycles reduces its capacity to 80%. Usually, the battery simply does not have time to completely degrade. Unfortunately, the flagships priced at about $ 1,000 change much less frequently. In addition, the non-removable batteries in recent models has further exacerbated the problem of its replacement. As a result, many owners of expensive smartphones in a year are faced with the unpleasant problem of replacing the battery. Of course, following some simple rules increases battery longevity, but does not solve the problem radically. Today, the duration of using even an mid-budget smartphone for 2-3 years significantly exceeds its battery longevity in case of active use of energy-intensive modes. But buying an expensive multifunctional smartphone just for talking is also hardly advisable. This contradiction requires a reasonable compromise.

Quick charge

Regular charging of a high-capacity battery lasts long enough, significantly reducing the model usability. A few years ago, companies realized this problem and without much fuss began to solve it. As a result, almost all large companies have developed and implemented fast charging technologies. Today Qualcomm Quick Charge is one of the leaders in this direction. However, Huawei SuperCharge, Oppo Super VOOC, etc do not lag behind the leader, offering elegant solutions. For example, Huawei uses 8-layer thermal insulation, Oppo - a parallel charge of a 2-component battery. Both solutions reduce battery heating during charging. As known, temperature above 30° C accelerates its degradation. But overall, fast charging usually shortens battery longevity. Initially, many companies considered fast charging as an opportunity to urgently recharge the phone. But this very convenient technology quickly became the dominant way of charging. Unfortunately, it has a significant drawback. Fast charging uses increased power from 18 W and above. In particular, Power Delivery 3.0 standard sets the range for voltage and current of 5 - 20 V and 1.8 - 5 A, providing maximum power up to 100W. Unfortunately, charging with increased power is accompanied by battery heating. In addition, the regular 5-watt (1A x 5V) battery recharging psychologically limits many users who do not want to spend time on long recharging. The absence of this restriction stimulates a more active use of energy-intensive modes (games, photos and video shooting, watching videos), speeding up the consumption of 500 battery charging cycles. Of course, the psychological readiness of the user to replace the battery or phone in 1-1.5 years eliminates the problem. Worse if this news comes as a surprise to him. In any case, companies are unlikely to significantly reduce the usability of their models by abandoning this technology.

The main reasons for reducing battery life

1. Battery degradation In Android models the *#*#4636#*#* combination activates the menu with the “Battery Information” item. It contains information about the battery level, temperature, etc. Settings for iPhone models with iOS version 11.3 and higher also contain similar information. 2. Ideally, the battery longevity will be equal to the phone usage period, eliminating the need to replace a non-removable battery. From Maximum Rocknroll #410 (July 2017): much-needed reissues of the Performing Ferret Band & Look Blue Go Purple, plus two new cassettes from the Australian underground via the Stroppies & Blank Statements. There’s also an interview that I did with early ‘80s No Wave/post-punk heroines Y Pants in #410, so if you’re looking to pick up an MRR back issue, you could do a lot worse than that one. 

The history of the PERFORMING FERRET BAND should sound pretty familiar to anyone with even a cursory interest in scrappy, flipped-out late ‘70s/early ‘80s DIY in the UK: art-minded school friends acquire a reel-to-reel tape recorder and try their hand at making music inspired by the dryly absurd sensibilities of Monty Python and aided by “a broken tambourine, a mandolin case for a drum, a kazoo, and a pair of plastic sandals.” Some more friends ultimately come into the fold, the band morphs into something more closely resembling a standard post-punk combo (now with guitar, bass, and legitimate drums), and in 1978, they record a cassette that finds its way to John Peel’s radio program (naturally). The first three songs from that EP became a 7” single on the Dead Hippy label in 1980, which has just been reissued by Germany’s Insolito Records with the addition of a fourth track called “Convenience” that had been previously unreleased until Hyped to Death’s PERFORMING FERRETS CD anthology in 2008. There’s that infamous quote from Mark E. Smith that “if it’s me and your granny on bongos, it’s the FALL,” and if you were to add some shaky organ and amateurish melodica to that equation, it might as well be the PERFORMING FERRET BAND. Flatly-delivered vocals, seemingly non-sequitur lyrics, clattering drums, trebly guitar lines usually consisting of two or three notes at most, the textbook Messthetics band, really. The group’s impossibly rare LP from 1981 is apparently also getting the reissue treatment soon (courtesy of Spain’s Beat Generation label), so all of you FALL/HOMOSEXUALS/SWELL MAPS freaks out there will have twice the cause for celebration - you need both records, trust me! Everyone I know who heard those TERRY records from last year was completely taken by them (rightfully so), and if you also count yourself among the TERRY true believers, the new self-titled cassette from fellow Melburnians the STROPPIES should have you similarly smitten. There’s an obvious reverence in these seven songs for many of the same foundational texts studied closely by the current cohort of Australian underground popsmiths that includes the likes of CHOOK RACE, DICK DIVER, and TWERPS - not surprisingly, the STROPPIES have some personnel overlap with the latter two.  The unassuming dual vocal melodies and freewheeling keyboard in “Go Ahead” are descended straight from the bright-eyed jangle of Flying Nun’s “big three” (the CLEAN, the BATS, and the CHILLS), while the comparatively moody “Celebration Day” pays tribute to the shambolic MODERN LOVERS-isms of the GO-BETWEENS’ early singles, and “No Joke” recalls the sort of US indie rock/slacker-pop championed in the early-to-mid ‘90s by fanzine writers and college radio DJs with multiple BUTTERGLORY and PAVEMENT records in their collections. DIY pop perfection, because Australia really does it better.

Half of the STROPPIES are also in BLANK STATEMENTS, who have their own new tape on Melbourne’s Hobbies Galore label as well. Signs Are Rampant largely dispenses with the chiming melodicism of the STROPPIES’ more overt Kiwi influences, instead putting minimalist, super-rhythmic bass lines and wobbly, droning organ at the forefront of their skeletal songs. At their most raucous, BLANK STATEMENTS sound like a lost femme-punk band in the KLEENEX tradition, like on “Accelerate,” which consists of little more than a minute of choppy snare hits, synth squealing in the background, and a delirious, repetitive group chant of “accelerate and break!”. But overall, Signs Are Rampant leans much closer to the homespun, paper-thin aesthetic of the bands that occupied the fringes of the pre-C86 Rough Trade/Cherry Red post-punk milieu - the MARINE GIRLS especially, but with traces of DOLLY MIXTURE and YOUNG MARBLE GIANTS hiding just beneath the surface, and more than a few nods given to the K Records-backed primitive-pop of fellow Aussies the CANNANES. Speaking of Flying Nun and the whole Dunedin sound, the brilliant all-female quintet LOOK BLUE GO PURPLE have often been lost in the shadow of some of their more well-known (and largely all-male) early-to-mid ‘80s contemporaries, although in my world, they’ve always been just as important as, say, the CLEAN, if not even more so. The three 12” EPs that they released between 1985 and 1988 have been incredibly hard to track down at non-collector scum prices for some time now, so Still Bewitched, Flying Nun’s new LOOK BLUE GO PURPLE double LP anthology, is honestly a dream come true (and this particular dream even includes seven previously unreleased live songs!). As you’d probably expect from any band that was a part of Flying Nun’s more pop-oriented faction, there’s plenty of frenetic guitar jangle in the mix, but LOOK BLUE GO PURPLE’s haunting multi-part harmonies, propulsive drumming, and flashes of darkly psychedelic organ paid one of the most sincere tributes to the VELVET UNDERGROUND in the 1980s, putting them on a similar wavelength as the FEELIES over in New Jersey at roughly the same time. The overlapping vocal melodies and knotted, shadowy post-punk undercurrent running through songs like “Hiawatha” and “Safety in Crosswords” also make it easy to understand why the band were often hailed as New Zealand’s version of the RAINCOATS (especially during the latter’s Odyshape/Moving era), while LBGP were never quite as spiky and ecstatically raw as their English counterparts - see the plaintive minor chords and ethereal flute centered in “As Does the Sun” or “Days of Old,” which aren’t very far removed from the atmospheric drones of late ‘60s acid folk. Dell Latitude 7400 2-in-1 Review

We don’t review many laptops aimed at commercial buyers, but this particular one from Dell is a little special. We first saw the Latitude 7400 2-in-1 during CES this year, where it was billed as the world’s first PC to use Intel’s Context Sensing technology. What this means is that sensors in the display bezels can detect when you’re away from the laptop or in front of it, in order for it to lock itself or wake up automatically. It’s a cool trick, which worked well when we tried it at CES.

As the name suggests, this is a convertible so it can be used as a tablet. It also has an optional 4G SIM slot for LTE connectivity, and lots of enterprise-level features for security and remote management thanks to the vPro-enabled Intel CPU. All in all, the Latitude 7400 2-in-1 looks like a good package, and it’s time to see how it performs.

Dell Latitude 7400 2-in-1 design

The Dell Latitude 7400 2-in-1 is premium business laptop, which is very evident from the moment you take it out of its box. It doesn’t have a very large footprint, so it’s easy to carry around, and the weight of about 1.36kg means it’s not too heavy either. Most of the body and lid are made from machined aluminium, which feels very premium and well put-together. The edges and corners are rounded too, so it’s not uncomfortable in the hand.

Dell has gone with a drop hinge design, which keeps the bottom of the display close to the surface of the lower half and hides a bit of the bottom bezel. This, coupled with the slim bezels on the other three sides, give the appearance of a larger screen. The 14-inch full-HD (1920×1080) display has a 16:9 aspect ratio and a maximum brightness of 300nits. It’s also touch-enabled, since this is a convertible laptop, and there’s Gorilla Glass 5 to protect it against scratches. The hinge allows the display to rotate all the way back, so this laptop can be used as a tablet. There’s support for Dell’s Active Pen too, which is a Rs. 6,500 (plus GST) optional accessory.

The lid offers excellent reinforcement for the display with little to no flex and absolutely no pixel warping, even when we applied pressure. The base of the Latitude 7400 2-in-1 is quite slim and houses all the ports. You get two USB 3.1 Gen1 Type-A ports, one on either side of the laptop; two Type-C Thunderbolt 3 ports on the left which can be used to charge the laptop; a full-sized HDMI 1.4 port; a microSD card slot; a Micro-SIM tray for LTE connectivity; a Noble Wedge lock slot; SmartCard reader; and a headphone/microphone combo port. We would have preferred a full-sized SD card slot here instead of a microSD one. There’s also no Ethernet port, which is worth noting for a commercial laptop.

The keyboard area is a bit sunken so the keys are at the same level as the palm rest area. This prevents the keys from making a lot of contact with other surfaces when you’re using the laptop in tent or tablet mode. The keys themselves are a little smaller than usual, which took some getting used to. However, the travel is good and they aren’t noisy even with vigorous typing. The power button is located separately on the right and on our review unit, it had an integrated fingerprint sensor, which is an optional feature. The glass trackpad is large and works very well, thanks to Microsoft’s Precision drivers.

The Dell Latitude 7400 2-in-1 has cutouts on the bottom for airflow, along with two separate ones for the stereo speakers. The base is held together by standard Philips screws placed around its the periphery, so it shouldn’t be too hard to access the internals.

Our test unit came with a 65W USB Type-C charging brick. The adapter is quite compact so it’s not a big problem to carry around.

Dell Latitude 7400 2-in-1 specifications and software

Since this is a commercial laptop, typically an IT manager or an individual buyer would have to send Dell the exact configuration they require in order to get a price quote. However, Dell does sell a few predefined configurations of the Latitude 7400 2-in-1 as retail units on its website, and buyers can customise these to some extent or simply buy one as is. Unfortunately, LTE connectivity is not available even as an option on the pre-configured units, so you’ll have to special order one if you want the SIM slot.

The configuration that Dell sent us for review includes an Intel Core i7-8665U quad-core CPU, based on the 8th Gen ‘Whiskey Lake’ architecture. This also includes Intel’s vPro extensions, aimed at providing IT admins the tools needed to remotely push updates, run diagnostics, and manage security. This CPU is a 15W part, with a base clock of 1.9GHz and a maximum turbo frequency of 4.8GHz. Our unit was configured with 16GB of LPDDR3 RAM which is soldered on; integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620; and a 256GB M.2 PCIe SSD. There’s also dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5, and a Qualcomm Snapdragon X20 LTE modem.

The Dell Express Sign-In app lets you configure the motion sensing feature

Our version of the Latitude 7400 2-in-1 came with Microsoft Windows 10 Pro, along with Microsoft Office Professional 2019. Once again, the bundled software is configurable so you can opt for no Office suite or add a subscription to McAfee Small Business Security, based on your company’s needs. You also get a three-year basic onsite warranty as part of the package, or you can opt for one with a longer duration and ‘next business day’ service, by paying more.

The laptop also ships with a bunch of Dell utilities such as Power Manager, Support Assist, and Command Centre, which we’ve seen before on some of its other laptops. One tool that’s new is Express Sign-in. Once you’ve set up face recognition for Windows Hello in the Settings menu, you can simply flip a toggle switch to enable Express Sign-in. You can set a timer (up to 3 minutes) for when the laptop should lock after you move away. The laptop will wake up if it detects the presence of anyone in front of it, but will only unlock with your face. It works pretty seamlessly, and requires no manual intervention, which adds a bit of convenience.

Dell Latitude 7400 2-in-1 performance and battery life

The Core i7 version of the Latitude 7400 2-in-1 that we reviewed ran very well. Boot times were quick thanks to the speedy SSD; the fingerprint sensor and face recognition worked very well; and Windows in general ran smoothly. We didn’t find the laptop too warm either when doing basic tasks. The screen’s touch response was good too, although this device isn’t the most comfortable to use as a tablet.

Windows Ink workspace lets you access some stylus-friendly apps, and more can be downloaded from the Windows Store. Dell sent us the optional stylus to try out. It’s powered by a single AAAA battery and has a flattened side which can snap onto either side of the laptop with the help of magnets. The pressure-sensitive tip is ideal for sketching, and the latency is very low, which makes it feel like you’re using an actual pen.

The Latitude 7400 2-in-1 is great for productivity. The keyboard is very comfortable for typing on for long stretches at a time, once you get used to the slightly smaller keys. There are two levels of backlighting. The glass trackpad works very well for using the mouse pointer and gestures. The display’s brightness is more than adequate, and colours are vivid and lively.

Besides work, the Latitude 7400 2-in-1 does a decent job with media playback too. High-resolution videos looked good, images appeared sharp, and colours were mostly on point. There’s WavesAudio Pro software for sound tuning. The stereo speakers get decently loud and sound alright for personal listening.

Cellular connectivity worked very well in our experience. We popped in an Airtel 4G SIM card, which Windows automatically detected and configured. A little ‘Cellular’ toggle switch in Windows’ notification area lets you manage the connection. In terms of privacy features, the Latitude 7400 2-in-1 doesn’t have a shutter to physically cover the webcam or the SafeScreen privacy feature for the display which severely restricts viewing angles. Some of Dell’s other models do offer these features,and Dell has informed Gadgets 360 that they should be added to the Latitude 7400 2-in-1 as options in the near future.

Speaking of the webcam, the camera produces good quality videos even indoors. It’s ‘Skype for Business’ certified and is accompanied by two microphones for better audio.

We ran our suite of benchmarks on the Latitude 7400 2-in-1, which returned decent results. Starting with CPU tests, Cinebench R20 returned single and multi-core scores of 419 and 1,336 respectively, while the POVRay benchmark took 3 minutes, 29 seconds to render a ray-traced scene. Coming to benchmarks that test the system as a whole, we got 3,889 points in PCMark 10 and 5,802 points in 3DMark’s Night Raid test for integrated graphics. Real-world tests showed promise too. It took about 4 minutes, 4 seconds to finish compressing a 3.2GB folder of assorted files; 1 minute, 44 seconds to encode a 1080p AVI file to 720p H.265; and 14 minutes, 22 seconds to finish the BMW test render in Blender.

The Latitude 7400 2-in-1 is rated to deliver more than a day’s worth of battery life, but this claim is for the Core i5 version with a 78WHr battery, as pointed out by Dell itself. All the pre-configured models in India ship with 52WHr batteries. Our review unit, with its Core i7 processor, didn’t get anywhere close to Dell’s claim. With Wi-Fi enabled, the brightness set to 50 percent with the keyboard backlight at its lower level, and the Windows power mode set to ‘Better battery,’ we were able to get around 10-11 hours of near-non-stop usage. This typically involved working within Chrome and watching videos on YouTube.

If you’re not using demanding apps then you should be able to get through an entire workday or even a long flight without needing to charge this laptop. When using cellular connectivity for similar work, we noticed a slight reduction in battery life. The Battery Eater Pro benchmark ran for 2 hours and 8 minutes, which is a little less than what we expected.

Dell’s Power Manager app for the battery is quite useful

Dell’s Power Manager utility is worth mentioning here, as it has some neat features when it comes to charging the battery. Besides being able to set different power profiles, there’s a feature called ‘Peak Shift’ which lets you specify time slots for when the laptop will charge, use battery power, or simply use power from the mains without charging the battery. This can be set for each day of the week, depending on your work schedule.

Verdict

The Dell Latitude 7400 2-in-1 doesn’t come cheap. At the time of this review, prices start at around Rs. 1,35,000 (with taxes) for the Core i5 model, and go up to about Rs. 1,63,000 for the top-end pre-configured model. If you were to custom-order one of these, the price would vary depending on the configuration and services you opt for.

Dell tells us that the model we received should cost around Rs. 1,45,000 (plus GST) but this exact configuration, with the 4G SIM slot, isn’t one of the pre-configured models on sale on Dell’s website. You’ll have to place an order for it, only after which you’ll get a quote for the final price. The number of units you order could also affect the final price.

The Latitude 7400 2-in-1 is a well-built laptop that looks and feels very premium. It offers good battery life, even with a Core i7 CPU. It has a vivid display and a very comfortable keyboard, and delivers good overall performance. The proximity sensing feature is pretty cool too.

There are a few things we would have liked done differently. A full-sized SD card slot instead of a microSD one would have been more useful, and a volume rocker and even a power button on the side, would have made for a more comfortable tablet experience. The HP Spectre x360 13 (Review), which we recently reviewed, had similar shortcomings, but it did offer privacy features for the webcam and display, which are yet to arrive on the Latitude 7400 2-in-1.

GoPro launches new Hero8 Black and MAX action cameras

GoPro has released new versions of both its hero line, and its newer 360-degree ruggedized action cameras. The $399 GoPro Hero8 Black’s most significant change is that it gains a new body design that incorporates GoPro’s signature mounting system right into the case, so that you no longer need add-on frames to attach it to selfie sticks, suction mounts, body mounts and more.

The GoPro Hero8 Black shoots at resolution between 1080p and 4K, and also gains HyperSmooth 2.0, the aptly named second generation version of GoPro’s proprietary digital stabilization technology. The first version, which premiered on the GoPro Hero7, was hailed for its effectiveness, and the follow-up is apparently even more powerful – plus, it provides new adjustment options so you can tweak how aggressive it is.

GoPro’s proprietary variable speed recording mode TimeWarp also gets upgraded to 2.0, and there’s better on-board wind suppression for mic-free recording. The body changes mean that the lens is no longer removable, but GoPro is planning to release a new mounting system for filters soon to make up for this limitation.

On top of the new design, there’s a series of new aftermarket add-ons, which GoPro calls “Mods,” to provide add-on features. There’s a Media Mod ($79.99) that includes a built-in shotgun mic; a Display Mod ($79.99) which has a flip up LCD viewfinder for vlogging, and a Light Mod ($49.99) which has a 200 lumen LED continuous video light source.

The other new camera, the GoPro MAX, is a $499 successor to the GoPro Fusion, and provides 360 capture. It’s designed to also produce great single lens, traditional wide angle footage, and has its own version of HyperSmooth stabilization called Max HyperSmooth (which you know much be extreme because it’s called ‘Max’).

The MAX seems less oriented at 360 video and more at advanced content creators who want maximum editing flexibility and the ability to more easily vlog, since it also includes a front-facing display.

GoPro faces increased competition from legit sources in their home category, including competing devices from DJI and Insta360, but the slate of new upgrades here really do sound like quality, meaningful improvements vs. the existing Hero7, and the new all-in-one body design should make it even more convenient for general use while out on the go.

Pre-orders are live now for the cameras, with shipping starting on October 15 for the GoPro Hero8, and shipments for the Max starting on October 24.
