not a question but basically any time i remember your art exists im looking it up and down and trying to take inspiration from it. your expression work is always top notch, and the way you depict faces is the perfect balance between cartoony and well defined

you know, i think this has been a long time coming. im going to take this as a chance to go in depth about how my style works, why i do what i do and how i do it. do keep in mind that none of this is me saying "this is the objectively correct way of doing art" but rather just how my own process works, what I like to see in my own art.

that balance that you speak of comes from a commitment to underlying structures. what im going to call the stylization sandwich

i start with a clear, well defined solid structure, i add whatever wacky cartoony features i want on top of it (none the less strongly tied and guided by the underlying structure) and then i refine by adding as many more realistic, grounding details i want, although you can go too far with it so i gotta be careful or ill end up with those shitty "cartoon character IRL would look scary!" clickbait drawings.

(quick aside, this trend fucking sucks, its obvious the artist went out of their way to make the drawing creepy, this pretension that "actually the character would look scary irl" deliberatly misundertands the principles of stylization, its as creatively bankrupt as jokes about mario eating mushrooms)

getting back on topic, the point is that, as long as the underlying structures are solid you can build whatever you want on top of them and it will make sense

a key tool here is internalizing the way the proportions on the face work. and i say internalize because obviously i dont actually have the golden ratio memorized inside my head nor do i stop and measure and calculate all the proportions in the features. i just read a lot about drawing, i drew a lot, i tried to always keep a critical eye to what im drawing and see if it "feels" disproportionate. once you get an eye for it then you know how far you can push things before they complitely break

let me give you another example of what i feel is a botched execution of this.

if you look closely at the face on the left there are a lot of things that dont make sense. the corners of the eyebrows dip down into the eyes when usually the eyes are enveloped by the eyebrows, the way the beard grows around the nose is just not how facial hair is distributed, the mouth is too big, etc. on the left i used photoshop to reorganize the factions into something that makes a bit more sense to me

(another quick aside, the real big problem at the heart of the original drawing were not so much the proportions but the tangents, when different lines touch each other like this that is usually a big no no but that is a topic for another day)

also a lot of it is just me cheating. yeah i cheat. you ever heard how people say there is no innate talent and its all practisce and hard work. well, yeah, that is mostly true, but is also true that some people are born with inherent advantages. either taller or more predisposed to being thin or with better facial structures or better innate hand-eye coordination. i was born with an uncanny capacity to visualize stuff. i have whatever the opposite of aphantasia is. i can borderline hallucinate things if i want to. and that goes coupled with the visual intuitions i developed through practisce and training.

so first come the learned wisdom, and then comes the innate talent that helps me exploit that learned wisdom to its full potential

on top of that is corporeality, i try to draw in such a way that it conveys depth and weight to the things im drawing, certain kinds of stylizations dont care about that and choose instead to have their drawing look flat, a classic one is the UPA style

is a very fun style! very cute, very dynamic, very expressive in its simplicity. it became very popular in the 60's and 70's. personally i choose to go in a different direction. i draw in such a way that if one were to turn my drawings into 3d models not a lot would get lost in the process.

whereas other artists....

...not so much

but yeah, ultimatly it all goes back to underlying structure. any drawing can work

as long as you have a strong foundation underneath.

PS: if you like my style i cannot reccomend enough the art of @rezuaq i feel they follow a lot of the same principles i talked about here but i could be wrong.

so as some of you know, i am very bipolar. and one of the symptoms of bipolar is going nuts with your money when you're on a "high," right?

and for most of my life, i have simply never been a big money spender. i am a hoarder by nature. i don't have many hobbies that really require a lot of money.

my bipolar highs tend to be me rambling a lot on tumblr, writing an entire book in like a month, and not going to bed till like 5 am.

so that part of the bipolar didn't bother me that much...until like.

when i suddenly realized...

oh god...i need to commission artists.

and now im losing my mind.

i now understand the bipolar people who spend all their damn money, because i have been commissioning artists like a fucking fiend.

my impulse control was so GOOD about not spending money, and now i have found the one thing that could actually bankrupt me, aaaaaaaaachahcahahahaa.

the only positive is that at least im supporting new artists, and not some bullshit like gucci or sephora or some shit.

new artists need the money and the exposure and they're creatives like me.

at least the worst i'm doing is supporting paypal.

im read about sufjan's seven swans. i find it a very affecting album, but its very referential, and i want to understand all the references. to better under a good man is hard to find i read the story, and read what oconnor said about the story. it didnt...really work for me, i guess. or...it works, but insofar as it works its not about god. and of course the album is about god. i find the notion that god is connected to the goodness in human beings....detestable? thats too strong a description. maybe repulsive is better. artistically bankrupt. it feels like its trying to tame the wildfire of humanity's experience of the numinous. like. the numinous is about there being more than this, its about humans not mattering at all except because the other greater thing, the surpassing-thing, cares about us. its about touching bedrock! its about being dwarfed. worship a mountian, worship a boulder.

anyway. so the notion of divine grace doesnt do it for me. BUT seven swans does it for me, a lot. which i think is interesting. that sufjan can "digest" work that doesnt work for me and make it work that does work for me. i feel like i often dont like the works beloved by my favorite artists. which makes sense, why would you assume you would, but idk, it feels unintuitive somehow.

Opinion on the live action films?

In terms of their “live action remake” schtick, my thoughts echo YOUR POST pretty much verbatim. They’re redundant and pointless and disrespect the artists and writers so much and always take the wrong freaking lessons out of their source material. (Im starting at 2010 for these.)

AND you know what’s wild?? Alice in Wonderland (2010), Maleficent (2014), The Jungle Book (2016), and Cinderella (2015) feel like such anomalies. They’re like… the first few from this stint, right? Almost like… at minimum the folk working on these had ideas in mind and really tried to make them their own things. You’ll def find people who hate these period, but you’ll also find more people giving these four a pass because at minimum… they do offer a different experience and don’t act as if they’re superior to what came before. I just don’t get that vibe.

THEN came Beauty and the Beast (2017) and it’s very clear Iger saw the successes of the former and went “oh i guess all we gotta do is just remake something people already know and we’ll make a billion dollars 🤪🤪🤪” and it’s obviously working. And every installment gets more egregious than the last and more blatantly cynical and acting as if “oh the originals weren’t that good anyway ☺️ look at us Screen Junkies and Twitter u can’t make fun of us now we’ve fixed everything.” (that’s another thing, all the bad faith criticism from the buzzfeed and honest trailers era I swear did so much freaking damage to creativity it’s absurd— and that’s to say nothing of what Twitter does.) The Lion King (2019) is probably the worst offender (AND ITS NOT LIVE ACTION u corporate animation disrespecting fucks AND HOT TAKE: they still look like cgi animals fuck you, rip the VFX artists)

Creatively bankrupt shitass fucking. Argh. It’s genuinely a case study in how they can take something already good, and SOMEHOW make it bad and miss the point of every creative decision made. All these little problems add up. And I think there’s something extra cynical happening now that genuinely rubs me the wrong way.

Honestly, I could talk forever about this on a case for case basis. There’s just soooo much to say. But it’s 7 AM and I shouldn’t get heated so soon.

i had a feeling they’d want to stay together tbh. the past year has had so many amazing career moments so disbanding is a silly choice as they’re still on an upward trajectory. you can’t disband the same year you headline coachella, that’s stupid

we want better organisation/planning, promotions, creative direction and music production so want them to sign elsewhere. ikon were able to leave yg still intact so bp could do the same but i thought it’d be more likely that they went to tbl. they love those guys and they’ve been spotted there a lot recently

if they do stay i want to give it time to see if there are any improvements before i make any judgements on it. praying that the pinks negotiate some changes in their contract terms

i mean i feel like ive said this a thousand times so i won’t repeat myself too much but i think leaving was in their best interests as individuals AND artists. yes bp still has a lot of potential, but i have my doubts that yg will be able to help them reach it. i hope and pray they made some good contracts negotiations and are actually forcing yg to put some real effort into them <3 ofc i am keeping an open mind and will see what happens in the future, but i still stand by my opinion 👍🏻

also im 99% sure bp couldn’t do what ikon did. i have obviously not see their contracts and documents regarding what went down, but i think ikon did what got7 did, which theoretically is that (in loose terms) they bought the rights to use the group name for music/merch/promo/etc from the company. the price of these rights is usually decided by the seller (with negotiations obvs), who looks at how much money the artist was making them in that moment and could make them in the future, and then creates a monetary value. ikon (sorry) was making yg pennies so allowing ikon to go and sell likely was in yg’s best financial interests, as keeping them was probably more expensive. bp is the only successful artist yg has and letting them go would likely bankrupt them, so if they were to make a price it would be like a bajillion won </3 the pinks are rich but idt they’re THAT rich

It is almost 6 in the am on this Friday the 3rd of March in 2023 and I’ve just been hit with enoi feelies all over again :( why couldn’t enoi’ve worked out we still don’t know why they all of a sudden disbanded and the weirdest part was their YouTube channel was deleted along with their vlive and there wasn’t even a reason as to why they said they disbanded. It’s weird that the company didn’t keep any of their socials up cause so many other groups still have YouTube channels and twitter and Instagram account up and I just think it’s so weird that kithewhale deleted everything?

Like I kinda wanna know what happened but I kinda don’t like if it was something bad but could it have been a contract termination or a member disagreement or the company went bankrupt like I’m always wondering what it could’ve been.

And like if enoi was still a thing I’d get to see laon and yongtae and hamin so much more often and donghyuk wouldn’t be completely alone and even tho omega x wouldn’t be a thing BUT OMEGA X WOULDNT BE A THING SO THEY WOULDNT OF HAD TO GO THROUGH THAT SHIT. started watching cobra kai today.

its got a very comftorable mid 2000s disney/nickelodeon live action show vibe going on that i appreciate

not too intense and milquetoast even in its plot points (so far) but not to the point of being boring. opposite of boring even. engaging. rly does feel like one of those classic cozy sitcoms but a bit edgier and with stuff actually happening. i saw like 2 eps so im not making any overarching descriptions im just saying i like it so far.

im obsessed with washed up old bastard trope. its gospel to me. giving severe LISA. just a shitty past his prime ex martial artist who is not so subtly politically bankrupt in the same way that one uncle you dont like is, repeating onto his pupils the same ill lessons his own mentor taught to him when he was young. that cycle of violence kind of deal.

i mean its pretty obv theyre setting him up to grow given how shit he is to begin with, and im very ready and happy to see that happen.

and i like how we are following the "bully antagonist" from the og series of movies too. morally dubious protagonists are my favorite. just incredible to watch really.

i did not see the original set of movies. maybe the first but it was when i was very young, i think they may be probably mediocre but ill probably go back for them piecemeal as i watch cobra kai and hopefully theyll be good. i do like martial arts. at least conceptually. i dont actually watch boxing or any kind of sport at all . i do enjoy watching what i have seen of combat sports though in videos ive seen throughout the years

There is no safety in growing up.

There is no safety in being  a kid, a teenager or a young adult.

There is no safety while you freak out over what you haven't done by 30 .

There is no safety when you are getting comfortable in your adult life.

There is no safe as an old person happy with their life.

There is no safety in life.

And whoever made you think you would be safe gave you a beautiful lie,

And a part of you will always wish you cherished longer.

If life was safe and not scary or terrifying,

If you don't get the rush of fear or sadness before every step, 

Then why take that step?

You take a step to get better,

To get happier,

To feel the rush you love,

For a wish and hope!

And sometimes you slip and you fall on your ass.

Sometime you fall back a step or two,

But so does everyone else,

So does the whole world,

So do i.

As I struggle to reagan my footing.

As I struggle to figure out which steps I need to get to where.

As I struggle to know which steps are too great.

As I struggle to learn what I learned from my last failure-

How to not fail in the same way,

But I do.

And it fucking sucks,

and i wallow for a moment - maybe one to many,

Maybe with a little more fear in me,

But im fucking terifed of landing on ass.

Terrified of the eyes that are on me,

I am someone so scared of the stage light and yet i have so many things dragging me there

with all my might.

So I take another step ,and maybe I won't fall this time.

Maybe I might.

And i am still fucking terifed,

And maybe it might hold me back,

After all i still have such negativity in me especial when im just about about to take a step

And that might just be the downfall.

I ended up back where i started,

Negativity comes back when i'm Standing, not doing anything,

But still I know I will take it eventually.

So here I am! 

Taking steps to become an artist,

To become a poet,

To become whatever job or life you deem is too unstable for me!

Because if I am going to fall on my ass then I am going to do it with something i love!

But do not let my encouragement think i am any better off than you,

Because I am still terrified I am still stuck.

But i know that their will always be another step i could take to get to my goal, 

and maybe that could be enough.

Maybe i will keep falling on my ass until look out, and just stay for moment

Until i look up and see how much higher i could go,

And i think how beautiful it must be at the top,

Or whatever I deem to be the top.

The prospect of reliving that experience even if I may be a lot more time limited (!) has massive appeal. Time acceleration wouldn’t appear until the sequel but I was kept mesmerised by the almost balletic display of fighters, frigates, destroyers and carriers taking on their enemies and so the hours passed away faster than I would realise. A couple of missions literally kept me going for over hours non-stop as I wanted to get my fleet safely through and stocked up on resources. Though I got my fair share of RTS action previously with Command & Conquer it was Homeworld that really grabbed my attention and it chewed through an insane amount of my time when it was first released. Paul Ruskay will also return to compose for the game which is fantastic news because the music and audio from Homeworld has always been a major factor in setting the right tone for the series.
