Triple Crossing

These images come from an intriguing spot if one is a rail enthusiast: the triple crossing at Tuscola, Illinois.

This is where the Illinois Central double track ran in a north-south direction; the B&O crossed moving east-west, and the C&EI (later MoPac) cut across at an angle to the previous two lines.

The first image shows an overview of the track layout as seen from the highway overpass nearby—the old track arrangement is still in play here, but preparations are being made for the simplified alignment soon to come. This will merge the B&O and C&EI prior to crossing IC, thus having fewer diamonds to maintain.

The latter two images show a southbound train of the IC: I shot the first still from the highway overpass while the second image was taken from track level, standing on the B&O. These were taken in the so-called death-star era, of which I have very few images.

This is an 1897 Poole Brothers railroad map of the Illinois Central and Yazoo and Mississippi Valley railroads. The map depicts the continental United States from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean and from the Canada to Mexico, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Antilles. A highly detailed railroad map, the routes owned by the Illinois Central are highlighted in red and all the stops along these routes are labeled. Major stops are highlighted in bold red lettering. Outside of the Illinois Central network, myriad different rail lines are illustrated and the company running that line is noted along with numerous stops along each route. Sea routes from New Orleans to locations in Central America, the Caribbean, and Europe are illustrated and labeled with destination and distance, along with routes originating from Havana. An inset map of Puerto Rico is included along the right border. An inset map of Cuba is situated I the bottom left corner. The Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad as incorporated in 1882 as part of the Illinois Central Railroad. The original line ran from Jackson, Mississippi to Yazoo City, Mississippi but was later expanded through the Mississippi Delta to Memphis, Tennessee. Yard Engine

Here we see the yard engine working a seldom used spur that leads from the main, through a cut, to downtown Bloomington, Indiana. The EMD GP9 was built in February of 1955.

This is along Illinois Central's line between Effingham, Illinois, and Indianapolis. It was the Illinois Central Gulf at the time after a merger with the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio four years earlier.

IC raised eyebrows when they ordered 6 of these beasts in 1968. They were initially used on the mainline but were soon relegated to hauling coal in southern Illinois and western Kentucky based out of Paducah where the big backshop could keep an eye on them. Every so often, one would escape and head north to Chicago on a coal train.
