So a few days ago, Pi (aka Pixel/Daisuke Amaya), the creator of Cave Story posted the link to a Discord server that, among other things, included a download link to a demo for a cancelled game he was working on around 2010-2011 called Rockfish. There's also hints that he might upload more unfinished/cancelled work. You can find the link here.
Rockfish seems a bit similar to his earlier game Ikachan, as you play as a fish and explore underwater environments. Interestingly, Amaya had previously posted video of another project also called Rockfish that seemingly had a completely different direction. where you played as a guy with a ship/helicopter.

Not much is known about this version and it was also cancelled.

Done in SAI.
I've noticed there isn't much Cave Story fanart for speculated ideas or events that happen outside of the game. Wonder why?
2016-07-29
This was my first attempt at serious digital non-pixel art. Really messed up the shading and perspective, but otherwise I think it was alright-ish.

Ikachan, beat November 5th.
Tumblr media
Very short and cute little game about an adorable squid saving some sea urchins and fish from impending doom and starvation. While it controls kind of strange, I think it's short enough to get used to it and have an enjoyable time. It's Studio Pixel, so the spritework, music, and dialogue are of course gonna be charming as all hell, but I think because this game is one of his oldest it gives me a specific feeling I cannot describe, but in a good way. Swim, Ikachan!

Daisuke Amaya
Tumblr media
I chosen Amaya to be my specialist focus as his specialist role was the all rounder, Amaya was responsible for every part in his game. Including the art.
Amaya was responsible for games such as Ikachan, Kero Blaster and most notably, Cave story.
Amaya created cave story over the course of 5 years, first starting off in college and continued the development on while in a role as a software developer.
Tumblr media
Amaya's biggest issue when creating cave story was that he hadn't planned the game out further enough, causing issues such as map ideas not being formed and he had issues with data management. From this I learnt that planning is the most important part of game design, to have a steady progress when making a game. The most important part is to have great planning before hand.
What made cave story so popualr was its modern development tools making the game feel smooth, all while having a very retro feel. Amaya has gone on to say that the retro feel has made the game completely possible because if Amaya chose to make the game in 3D, the game wouldn't of been made or at least would have a different artist as Amaya does not have experience in 3D art.
Cave story (2024) Wikipedia. Available at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cave_Story (Accessed: 01 May 2024).
Toby Fox
I chose Fox to be my chose specialist as he holds the sole role developer, composer and artist in the one of the biggest indie games, Undertale. Fox started off creating composing music for a web comic named HomeStuck.
Tumblr media
Starting off on Kickstarter Undertale was just an at home project that was asking for $5,000. This was overshot up to $50,000. At the time Fox was just a game developer first learning how to make games.
Tumblr media
When Fox was looking on wikipedia he came across a page detailing how data arrays worked. After reading the page he decided that was how he was going to work his text system. From there Fox used inspirations from many different medias to create his character as well as the atmosphere of the whole game. He took his love for shows such as Mr.Bean to create the comedy of the game, while he used games such as Mario & Luigi for the inspiration of the battle system.

A Summer of GameMaker
Just wanted to highlight my games I made over the summer with a post.
Notuna is a Sonic inspired platform game. Probably my favorite game I designed this summer, and my favorite game I made in the software. I designed it "old-school" style. MS Paint for graphics, MIDI music and whatever is sitting around for sound effects. This game won best audio in the GameMaker Community Jam 49.
Made as a cooldown from the last game, I felt inspired by Pixel's Ikachan to make a little squid adventure. Long story short, it turned into something much bigger than I had originally planned for. I felt obligated to release it once it had been finished, so I selected a relaxed jam I've had my eyes on for a while.
I've written about Ghost Nirvana before. I've always wanted to join A Game by Its Cover, I finally did! I'm quite happy with this game, I had many adventures during its production and it was so cool to be part of this rich tapestry.
Still being actively developed, Lighten Up - Kingdom of the Goobers is my very first collaborative effort. My associate worked on the music while I did the art and we shared the programming duties. While only the jam version is available for the moment, we're working on a post-jam version that really captures a spirit of exploring an unforgiving space and saving cute potato aliens.
Our entry for the 50th GameMaker Community jam, another collaboration with the person from the previous game. It's taken priority as we work out a build to preserve a certain feature special to the jam: A crossover achievement system for any games made by the "Blu Cru". It is an odd game, and I am absolutely here for it.
I'm glad I could finally channel a flurry of creativity into something consistently. I enjoyed designing these games and I hope to make more, but first I'd like to tie some ends together in Sebastion and Lighten up. Ludum Dare season is coming up and I am pumped!

#SHANTAE SPRITES DS UPGRADE#
Gunvolt is very fast-paced and frantic, kind of like the upgrade in speed from Mega Man to Mega Man X to Mega Man Zero pushed another step further (it's by the same company that developed Mega Man Zero). Shovel Knight is very old-school style with modern design and polish. I also highly recommend Shovel Knight and Gunvolt, as /u/ErrorEra mentioned.
#SHANTAE SPRITES DS SERIES#
The Pokemon and Fire Emblem series both have a 2D pixel-style overworld with 3D graphics for the battles, not sure if that's what you're looking for. The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds has 3D graphics but mimics the style of A Link to the Past very closely, if you enjoyed ALttP I highly recommend getting LBW. With a small SD card, you can fit a lot of really nice, quality digital titles! Hope that helps! There is more, I am sure, but these were just the ones I could think of off the top of my head! I know physical games were preferable, but I highly encourage you to check out some of the eShop releases. ikachan canonically exists in cave story's world. cave story's world has guns all over the place. theoretically, a gritty reboot of ikachan where they wield a bunch of guns is completely possible within the canon of their shared universe. in this essay i will
