Dynamight and All Mights Character Arcs

⚠️MHA Manga spoilers⚠️⚠️Discussion of ch362⚠️

Okay… this is the only serious post I’m making regarding Katsuki’s death scare. I’ll answer any asks about it but other than that I’m not gonna make anymore posts about this particular topic. Mha isn’t within any of our control and predictions are just that… predictions. In reality, this is Horikoshis story and if he decides to truly break all of our hearts then so be it.

Also I’m not gonna talk about OFA theories and more so their characters themselves. Mainly cuz OFA is complicated and it’s difficult to pinpoint what might actually be happening to it or what it’s doing. I’m just going on based on what would make sense as their arc resolutions and why I think so. Anyways…

I: Unfinished Business

So I’m pretty sure we all came to the conclusion that Katsuki’s arc is incomplete and this supposed “death” feels abrupt, rushed, and unsatisfying. Not that if he died at another point it’d be satisfying but with how Horikoshi has written other deaths (which I’ll bring up again later) it’d be very out of character of Hori to present the second male lead with a death that feels so incomplete and tragic.

I’m gonna cut straight to the point: Katsuki has been reflecting on himself for almost 250 chapters. Slowly accepting that he’s in fact, not the best. Thinking about what he did to Izuku when they were younger and finding ways to atone for it. Learning that showing you care about someone isn’t a sign of weakness. Overall trying to be less of an asshole. And most important (in my opinion) learning how to accept help from others. I wanna talk about this point specifically.

Izuku is “win to save” right? His thing is about helping people even when they don’t ask for it, and at the beginning that’s what bothered Katsuki the most about Izuku. Izuku tried to help him when Katsuki didn’t need it and Katsuki thought it was offensive because why would a kid who is good at everything with an amazing quirk need help from a quirkless loser?

This development is what stemmed the “if I can’t save myself, I’d rather not be saved” attitude that he has at the beginning because having to be saved makes him feel just as—if not more—inferior as losing.

It took him a while to be even somewhat okay with accepting help from someone else and the first example was Kirishima in the hideout raid. Y’know, that time where Izuku let someone else be the one to reach out to him no matter how much he wanted it to be him. He said it had to be Kirishima because he knew that Katsuki wouldn’t have accepted his hand. Because he never has. And still hasn’t (no, heroes rising doesn’t count until proven otherwise).

After DvK2 Katsuki became almost hyper-fixated on the fact that he’s been misunderstanding Izuku for damn near 12 years. But also after DvK2, Katsuki hasn’t been given another chance to accept Izukus hand. And yea it’s pretty sappy but it’s an important part of their relationship and Katsukis development that theoretically can happen in the vestige world but wouldn’t make sense in terms of an actual resolution (in my opinion).

II: Katsuki’s Stubbornness

Katsuki is persistent and always has been. Aizawa and All Might have pointed it out several times. He’s grownup being good at everything and at UA is when he starts to be told there’s things he can’t do. He starts to get a taste of failure and tries his best to do what he’s told his incapable of anyway. The earliest example I can think of is during the sports fest when Tsuburaba tried to block Katsuki with his solid air and Monoma’s team is like “heh he can’t break through that.”

And he did anyway.

Or final exams when he was determined to try to beat All Might. Even though he didn’t he still tried his damnedest which I think is the best example despite not winning the way he wanted to. It’s also the first time he accepts Izukus help no matter how much he doesn’t like it. (The amount of parallels from this fight to 362 is crazy when you look at it closely)(we also get a taste of the actual frustration he feels when someone tells him he can’t do something).

“We had no hope of beating you without taking a few risks.”

“Even if it messes me up, I chose this path to victory.”

(…and we call Izuku the self sacrificial one)

Seem familiar? This quotes seem oddly relevant in light of 360-362. He’ll break himself if it means he tries his best for the outcome he wants and…

Meaning: as long as he’s able, he’ll fight to win. It’s apart of his character to not go down easily. He’s simply too stubborn to and it’d be extremely unfulfilling to go down mid-fight and not get back up. Yea, he didn’t get up a second time in his final exam because he passed out but, Izuku still made sure he claimed a victory even if it wasn’t the way he wanted. Plus he didn’t need to get up a second time. Katsuki deserves a victory to actually go his way this time, not for the victory itself but to prove his own expectations of his strength. He wants to be the strongest, right?

Who is Katsuki Bakugou if not someone that lives up to their own word?

If not for himself then for Izuku. To be the person Izuku looks up to.

III: All Mights incomplete arc and Nighteyes vision

So All Might has always been one to keep secrets from most people. When Izuku found out that All Might kept the fact that Nighteye knew about OFA and didn’t like him before they even met, he was offended, remember? And offended by the fact that Mirio was supposed to be the successor that All Might was settling with. Emphasis on settling.

Nighteye made it clear that he thinks Izuku is a lousy choice in a successor because he thinks “the burning desire to help people” isn’t enough to be a suitable candidate despite the fact that that’s how All Might was metaphorically born. And he still believes that despite Izuku’s quick improvement (up until his dying moments at least, but that’s beside the point).

So theory time:

I’ve actually been thinking about this for a while I just didn’t think Katsuki would have to get so hurt for it.

Some of Nighteyes dying words was about how Izuku proved that the future can be changed but during the Chisaki battle Uraraka and Izuku also proved that it takes will and conviction to change the future. To change fate. However, All Might has already secretly accepted that he is going to die which is why he never told the foresight to Izuku.

However…

He’s fighting to live for Izukus sake. Not his own. From this point in the story, yea Izuku needs him and All Might knows that. But later, after endeavors agency arc All Mihht starts to slowly believe that Izuku doesn’t need him anymore and in Izuku’s vigilante arc, All Might starts to see his thoughts being proven correct.

“You won’t need to look back to me.”

All Might began to realize that he’s not someone Izuku needs anymore, as harsh as that sounds. He became someone Izuku sought out to protect rather than the other way around and being aware of that is frustrating for him.

The panel of All Mights response was small and on the next page so I didn’t add it but all he said was “thank you.” He didn’t go on some kind of tangent about continuing to fight to live.

He recognizes that he’s not keeping the promise he made to Inko. He’s supposed to be the one protecting and teaching Izuku but the table turned (in a more obvious way since Izuku has been the one protecting and teaching All Might in the first place). But in the same way that he recognizes himself as not being someone Izuku needs anymore, he recognizes the people that Izuku does need. I think when it comes down to protecting himself or protecting someone he knows that Izuku still needs in his life, he’d choose the latter because he’s dedicated the rest of his life to doing things for Izuku’s sake. Not his own. And who’s the person that’s been most recognizable to All Might as the most important person in Izuku’s life?

I think All Might is gonna see Katsuki on the ground and be prepared to die for him just as Katsuki was prepared to die for Izuku (ch285). It would come full circle from when he was unwilling to try to save Katsuki in chapter one until he saw Izuku go for him first.

This is where I’ll start to sound desperate but it’s a legitimate thought I’ve had for a while. All Might can still go into his muscle form. And there’s no proof that OFA is completely gone other than ‘a feeling’ All Might had in his fight in Kamino. The original theory about why All Mights vestige is still ghostly was because he’s still alive but, what if it’s because he still has shreds of OFA and since he still has it, he hasn’t become a true vestige yet? This is something I thought of way before 362 because something just never felt right about it? Why would Nighteyes vision take place after All Mights retirement?

Nighteye didn’t say he’d encounter AFO again, assuming he knows what AFO looked like and what state he was in after All Might “beat” him 6 years ago. Just like All Might was able to recognize AFO immediately, Nighteye would too.

Do you remember his run in with stain? How stain threatened to kill him for talking down on himself? Stain showed All Might that despite feeling useless, there’s still people that believe in him. And he hit him with this:

A hero only exists for the sake of others…

That’s what he’s been doing, hasn’t it? Except in the state he’s in, he can’t be a real hero anymore can he? He’s felt useless. Like a Deku.

OFA is a power all about will and love. Katsukis in trouble and Katsuki means something to Izuku so… he’ll pull through despite thinking he can’t. Just like he did here:

Yes, it’s sad. But in my brain it makes sense and it’d complete All Mights character nicely. I think he’s being brought up to often in this fight for him to sit there and continue to just watch.

I’m sure Katsuki isn’t the only person that’s realized this about Izuku and has been inspired by it. And I think All Might being able to use OFA immediately with no drawback when he got it adds a tinge of irony there.

Do I think he’ll be the one to save Katsuki? No. But I think he’s gonna “face that other villain” while someone else heals Katsuki and OFA does whatever it does. And hopefully Izuku will be there eventually to lend a hand that Katsuki can finally accept.

Also I’d like to point this out before moving on:

Beginning of the story, rain started. The beginning of this shitshow.

Right after Izuku was found by Katsuki and brought home by his classmates. All Might letting someone else protect and raise him because he knows he can’t do anything that he considers meaningful for him anymore. The rain stops. When All Mights attitude changes after Stains lecture.

Weather has a sudden change again and it’s about to rain. What if it’s All Might heading to the battle field? He accidentally caused the rain before when he protected Katsuki (ch1). So what do you think will stop the rain once it’s started? I personally think it’ll be All Might accepting his unfortunate fate and dying happy doing something he always loved doing again. Being a hero and dying a hero. Not dying as some retiree.

Anyways…

These next two points are a little more logistical.

IV: Horikoshis Writing Style

There haven’t been very many deaths in mha. But each time they died with someone they cared about around or someone that cares about them (minus midnight).

-Twice saving Toga and compress and giving back Togas Handkerchief

-not a death scene but Mirio and Tamaki using each other as crutches when they were both really injured.

-Nighteye dying in the presence of All Might, his sidekick, disciple, and the kid that changed his negative attitude about his foresight (Izuku changing the future but not dying to Chisaki).

-again not a death scene but Kirishima sacrificing himself for Mina when Gigantomachia tried to grab her.

-not a death scene again but Katsuki sacrificing himself for Izuku.

A sudden change in that pattern just wouldn’t make sense in my opinion. Katsuki taking a senseless beating and dying is inconsistent writing to me so he’s gonna get back up cuz I say so.

V: Quirk Society

There’s not much to this so I’ll get straight to the point:

Recovery Girls existence

Best Jeanist survived a massive hole in his abdomen from AFO despite not being able to be healed for damn near half an hour (and we didn’t know he was still alive for like 150 chapters). Izuku gets his shattered bones healed in minutes despite it taking months to heal that kind of injury naturally. Katsukis injury seems healable when you take the verses medical care into consideration.

In terms of strategy when it comes to this fight I think it’d be dumb to not have Recovery Girl and a medical team on standby in AFO or ShigAFOs battlefields. I’m sure there’s medical and rescue on standby at the other battle fields too for after fights but it’d be dumb not to have at least someone at the fight against the biggest threat.

VI: Parallels

Half-assed Conclusion

Katsuki accepting Izukus help and Izuku potentially saving his life isn’t him being a damsel. It’s a resolution to his character and is purely his own. I don’t think any other conclusion to his character arc would be satisfying until he accepts help from Izuku. Will it kinda be a test of Izuku’s control over his heart? Maybe. Will Izuku probably go ballistic? Probably. But whatever happens with Katsuki is Katsuki’s development only (and some all might).

Idk this may be me being in denial and desperate but this last chapter kinda screwed me up and made me think about the story a lot and how weird and out of place this chapter feels. It makes me feel better to word dump and put my thoughts somewhere that isn’t my brain so. This post probably doesn’t make much sense cuz I wrote it pretty quickly. Sorry in advance I guess lmao.

I’m not talking about this anymore and I’m probably gonna take a little break from mha for a bit. I’ll still be updating my fic for anyone that’s keeping up with that but other than that I’ll be avoiding the manga for a bit which is why I won’t be talking about this subject for a while.

Yet Another Kingdom Hearts Revisit, Part VIII

I mentioned in my KH II revisit that KH I is the only Disney property since Beauty and the Beast was released in 1991 (the live action remake very much included) to tell a good story with Belle and the Beast. The latter character acting as a parallel to Sora for the beginning of Hollow Bastion is a great touch too. And if Belle's dialogue boxes don't really "sound" too much like her, I do like that she stands apart from the rest of the princesses in the library, doing research. None these details are labored over, but they're smart and appreciated choices in direction and plotting.

And, speaking of plot - every time I come back to this game, I have a renewed and deepened love for how the story is handled in this section of the game. The subversion of the "chosen one" and "hero's journey" archetypes is so beautifully done, clear and impactful without straying into obnoxious meta-commentary on storytelling, and Sora and Riku (as they were in this game) are the perfect characters to go through that subversion. I daresay I don't know of a better example of a pair of rivals coming to a head and defying the expectations everyone had for them (well - everyone but Kairi). And the fact that, as a consequence of that subversion, Donald and Goofy end up (briefly and indirectly) allied with Maleficent is one of the many gutsy story choices I cannot believe Disney allowed to go through for this game.

The twist with Ansem is the only clean villain twist in the series - that is, it's the only one that works without at least one asterisk. And the Princesses of Heart (again, as they were in this game) as a plot device is a great way to take a Disney concept, darken it a little, and make it a organic and integral piece of the crossover. And that all this takes place on Hollow Bastion is appropriate, because of all the original elements created for the series, that world (yet again, as presented in KH I) is the most successful at uniting Disney sensibilities with Square/Final Fantasy sensibilities, aesthetically and narratively. It's the ideal penultimate stage for a game like this.

But with all that praise out of the way - the way the series has developed since KH I has made me ambivalent about quite a bit surrounding Hollow Bastion. And that is not fair. No one involved in making KH I could have known how the series would pan out, or that Kingdom Hearts would ever be a series. If an element works in the initial entry of a series but ended up being developed in a negative way, that shouldn't take away from its effective use earlier on. But it's impossible not to at least dwell on consequences and alternate possibilities with KH at this point.

To start with the weapon at the heart of the series - Most of the dialogue and lore dropped in KH I treats the Keyblade as a singular entity, a mysterious and powerful object that has bestowed itself on chosen bearers, good and evil, throughout history. The Keyblade of Heart and Mickey's Keyblade popping up in the third act does not easily square with that set-up, even with a last-minute note about the "two keys" in The End of the World. I can accept the Keyblade of Heart as a unique creation of the princesses' hearts by Ansem while possessing an intended wielder of the Keyblade, and Mickey's having one is an admittedly satisfying eucatastrophe. I can't say I have any thoughts on how certain plot points could have been resolved without those two blades either. But with how out of control Keyblades have become since, part of me wishes that they could have found a way to make the story work with there being just the one and only Keyblade wielded by Sora.

Part of me also wishes that Maleficent never came back after her defeat here. As much as I love the idea of her story in KH II and the concept of her "origins" in BbS, the execution in both games is uneven (the latter more than the former), and nothing since has been remotely satisfying. On the other hand, I'd be loathe to see anyone else representing the pinnacle of Disney villaindom, so for that reason alone, I'm less torn on Maleficent than I am the Keyblade issue.

Where I'm most torn so far as villains go is with Ansem. Playing this game again, I found the slow reveal of his true nature so successful, and so satisfying, that I had to reconsider my thoughts about KH II. As much as I enjoy just how improbably effective the twist about "Ansem" being Xehanort is, it is a dilution of what was an immensely pleasing arc. I'm now wondering about a KH II with no DiZ and no villain twist - just Xemnas as the Nobody of Ansem, a man who corrupted himself and his apprentices.

And now it's time to revisit a point I raised in Part I: the Princesses of Heart. It's always bothered me that Alice is one of them, and I admit that's entirely because of my persnickety ways. For one thing, if Wendy isn't pure enough to be a Princess of Heart, then Alice - of a similar age and disposition - shouldn't be either. But Alice is also not royalty of any kind, not in her books, not in her film, and not in Disney's many marketing ventures. You can say that "Princess of Heart" is really just a pithy way of saying "seven maidens whose hearts happen to be devoid of darkness and therefore have vague yet potent powers," but when five of the six taken from Disney are royals by birth or marriage, Alice sticks out like a sore thumb.

To be sure, it's not as if the KH team had a lot of options to choose from at the time. The only realistic options for a sixth princess who really was a princess in 2002 would have been Ariel and Pocahontas. It might have been fun to bring the latter into KH, but it's hard to imagine her ending up captured by the Heartless, and harder still to imagine Disney wanting to remind people of a film they'd already begun to sour on as a company. As for Ariel, I'm more than content to have her as a party member who can fend for herself. I also don't think you can be counted pure of heart if you cut deals with sea witches, however innocent your motives.

Really, Alice being in the line-up wouldn't be more than a minor itch in my anal-retentive mind...if it weren't for the fact that, by her not being a real princess, the door was opened for Kairi not to be a real princess.

And again, that wouldn't be more than a nitpick if it was just a matter of rank; it's not as if Kairi needs to be a princess to be a good character. But the way the game handles her, I don't think anyone could be chastised for thinking that Kairi was Hollow Bastion royalty. Her heart inside Sora's stirs at the castle slide in Deep Jungle. She has memories of living in a castle, of being told bedtime stories by her grandmother in the library of the castle of Hollow Bastion. Ansem calls her "princess" multiple times. I know that in the extra Ansem Report added in Final Mix, he just refers to her as "a girl," but if that was always the intention - if Kairi was always meant to be an ordinary girl who happened to be a Princess of Heart - then they really shouldn't have put so much effort into suggesting otherwise.

And now consider that it took until Melody of Memory for any meaningful expansion on Kairi's past in Hollow Bastion, and how perfunctory it was compared to the piles of lore and backstory spent on Xehanort, the Organizers, the Nameless Star, Ven, and his stupid focus-pulling cat. I think that, had Kairi been established as the princess of Hollow Bastion and a pivotal figure to a pivotal world, that would have given her real estate within the lore that would have made it harder to ignore her for so long in the narrative. Then again, given how quickly the series' priorities seemed to shift even within CoM and KH II, maybe it wouldn't have mattered.

Kairi is also tied into my one major gripe with Hollow Bastion in KHI, which is one of my only major gripes with the story as a whole. Remember how Sora tells Kairi to stay in Traverse Town, telling her that she'd be in his way? And remember how, when he gets back to Hollow Bastion, the six Princesses of Heart tell him that they're barely keeping the darkness at bay and that it's costing all their vaguely-defined power not to give in?

Gee, if only there were a seventh Princess of Heart who could lend her light to theirs. And if only we knew who she was and where she was. And if only we had a spaceship we could use to bring her to Hollow Bastion. And if only, should Sora be foolish enough to leave her behind, all his friends from Traverse Town followed him to Hollow Bastion and could have brought her along with them.

If only...if only...if only...

RELATIONSHIP META - DOLORES & CALEB (PART II)

[PART I HERE]

In The Mother of Exiles, we catch up with Dolores and Caleb, cementing their bond as revolution bros by doing what bros do best... Going shopping together! They need to look flashy enough that they don't seem out of place while infiltrating the 1%, but also not draw too much attention at the same time. Caleb doesn't wear many suìts in his line of work, so he feels a little hopelessly lost when trying to pick a convincing outfit. Luckily, Dolores is good at this sort of thing, so she helps him out.

DOLORES: Did you choose something? CALEB: (Groans) I don't know where to start. It's not really my style. It's not really my social set, either. DOLORES: It's tribal. They use plumage to identify themselves...which makes them easily fooled. CALEB: So who is it? That we're going after? DOLORES: The person who took your future. But first, we have to take his...and to do that, you have to pretend to be one of them.

I always saw Dolores's use of "They" in this context as being about "The Rich." As in she doesn't associate Caleb with the rest of them because he possesses more humanity than most of them, but also because he's a working class guy who would, under normal circumstances, never have any business interacting with anyone in this particular tax bracket.

Dolores and Caleb leave the store and Caleb expresses some concern that the guy whose money they stole to buy the suit will find out about it, with Dolores assuring him that they won't get caught. Even if they were to get caught, the guy they stole from won't even realize his money is missing until it's too late to do anything about it.

Uh...You know I think this is just- this is two friends running totally normal rich people errands here. What's a little light murder among friends? Doesn't really look like anything to me.

Okay jokes aside, though... Dolores kills this man, a financial manager by the name of Michael Tritter, who manages Liam Dempsey as a client. She takes a syringe and fills it with his blood, which contains an encryption key in the form of a unique blood marker, and then injects it into Caleb.

They travel to The RGGR Centennial, a bank designed specifically for the financial elite in the world. The job here is to transfer all of Liam's money out of his account and covertly into Dolores's possession. To do that, Caleb impersonates Tritter using the blood marker, and Dolores uses Liam's personal hash key, which she acquired earlier with the help of Connells-Dolores.

CALEB: I thought we were going to a bank? DOLORES: This is a bank. For a certain social set. Blood marker should be good for another fifteen minutes or so, but try to stay calm. The faster your heart beats, the faster the marker degrades. CALEB: What happens if it degrades too fast? DOLORES: We do this the old-fashioned way. CALEB: The old-fashioned way? DOLORES: I kill everyone.

Fortunately, things at the bank go fairly smoothly and nobody has to die, although for a minute it feels like a very real possibility.

Caleb is nervous and it makes his hands sweaty to the point that the blood scanner can't get a clear reading on his ID. Seeing Dolores start to reach for the gun she has concealed in her handbag probably doesn't help with his nerves much either, but she hands him a cloth and after he wipes down his hands, the scanner is able to get a clear ID on the blood marker and the money transfer is successfully taken care of.

The next part of the plan is to intercept Liam at a masquerade event, where sex workers and models auction off their various services to wealthy patrons. The proceeds from the auction sales are donated to charitable organizations.

One of Liam's friends passes him a vial of an experimental drug known as Genre, a virtual movie marathon that is meant to be marketed as "The Poor Man's W/estworld" and allows its user to experience reality as seen through the lens of popular movie genres. Liam pockets the drug for later, and attempts to enter the auction so he can bid on a girl, but he discovers he has no money, not knowing Dolores has it all.

Dolores and Caleb move in to catch Liam, but her old friends Bernard and Stubbs reach him first, thinking Dolores has already killed and replaced Liam with a host copy, or is planning to, to gain control of Rehoboam. They escape from the auction hall. Dolores passes Caleb her gun and sends him ahead in pursuit of Liam, while she stays behind to fight and subdue Stubbs.

DOLORES: Stay on Liam. I'll handle this one. CALEB: You sure? DOLORES: Take it. I won't need it.

As has been pointed out by the lovely @copiesofme [in this post], Dolores's fight with Stubbs is never intended to kill him, nor is it fought on bad terms between either of them. It's only fought out of necessity and Dolores does everything she can to fight fair and not hurt Stubbs too badly.

I will also point out, Dolores giving Caleb the gun in this situation speaks to just how much trust she has in him! As Connells-Dolores will tell Bernard just a little bit later in either this episode or in the next, he's the only host they can't replace. Meaning that if Caleb had felt threatened or at all like he had to shoot Bernard, then Dolores's grand plan would've probably been fucked. But Dolores knows this, and she can trust that Caleb won't bring Bernard to harm.

Their friendship remains pretty unchanged from the end of Mother of Exiles to Genre. Partly because there's not really anywhere else to go for now, Caleb has already committed himself to helping Dolores. He has seen her kill and as concerned as he was about "what the fuck are you doing??" it didn't discourage him from wanting to keep helping her.

Toward the beginning of Genre, Caleb gets drugged by Liam with the dose of Genre he was given previously, which also sort of stunts how much growth Caleb can achieve at this point. If he's not making woozy faces or shooting worried glances at Dolores, he's busy trying to help her keep Liam alive.

Caleb does have A moment (or two) where everything becomes rose-tinted, time slows down, a romantic piano melody plays in the background, and he finds himself staring, eyes wide and glassy, mouth agape - at Dolores while she fires a gun at Serac's men. It's all very silly and lovey-dovey at a first glance.

I think this does reflect, as do ALL of the Genre phases he experiences, what Caleb is feeling in his subconscious (he goes from the pensive mystery of film noir, to a cheesy action hero in the thrill of battle, to romance, to drama, with a brief interlude of reality before finally arriving at the finale of horror). But I'll also say that from start to finish of the romance sequence, he never speaks a word. He just looks. To me, that's the most honest telling of his internal feelings being externalized. He doesn't act on or expect any romantic feelings to be reciprocated just because he might happen to feel them.

I don't ship Caleb and Dolores in the romantic context. I think all the potential was there for it. I don't know, maybe there will come a day where I change my mind on this, but after what happened with both William and Teddy respectively, I don't think Dolores would be okay with putting Caleb through anything similar to those experiences, and even more importantly I don't think Dolores would be okay with putting herself in that kind of situation again.

So I've kinda avoided talking about this for over 3 years because I genuinely didn't really know how to put it into simple words until now (also at some point early on someone had like. anon messaged me saying my caleb with my main dolores was their otp and i was like 'uhh you mean the relationship that isn't romantic in any way whatsoever on our part?' but. that was a long time ago i'm trying to get over it okay. It did put me off from wanting to talk about things for fucking ever tho).

Anyway, romance rant over I didn't mean to write an entire essay there oops. Caleb manages to snap himself out of the daydream and get back to fighting even though he's definitely not at the top of his game. By the end of the scene he starts to look over at Dolores again with the love theme reprising itself, only to be interrupted again, this time by Giggles popping up to tell everyone he knows exactly what drug Caleb is on. Ash sarcastically refers to him as Loverboy, and then everyone quickly moves on.

The group makes their way down to the LA Metro station and Dolores makes the final preparations before sending the entire world their Incite profiles, which will radicalize them against Rehoboam. Caleb has all kinds of conflicted feelings about seeing the real world as Dolores sends everyone their profiles detailing their various fates. It's chaos and anarchy which he's not the biggest fan of because innocent people can and will get hurt, but it's also people acting out and rebelling in the realest ways they can against an unjust system, and that part of it is very appealing in a world that had no free will before.

Dolores moves in front of Caleb, shielding him from taking these bullets and killing the enemies who seemed like they were after Caleb specifically? But they're not dressed like Serac's people so maybe they were just random criminals. Maybe the bounty that got put on him in episode 3 is still up? He did see some suspicious-looking guys when they first entered the Metro station and seemed pretty convinced they were bad news considering how quickly he alerted Dolores to them, so maybe these two enemies were working with those guys.

Whatever the real reason is, Caleb experiences the shocking revelation that Dolores is not a human, because she just tanked 5 bullets without a thought and didn't die. Dolores just. zips up her jacket to hide the wounds because we are not talking about that right now we have other matters to take care of. Caleb, still in disbelief, follows right ahead.

CALEB: Back there... The shooters... DOLORES: We can talk about it later. We need to get to the airfield. (Gesturing to Liam) We don't need him anymore. What do you want to do with him?

At the beach, beneath the same pier where Dolores first brought Caleb to show him the truth about his world, things take a turn. Liam begs the group to let him go and whines that they've taken everything he had. He claims that the system isn't the prison and that people don't have a choice in who they are by nature. Caleb tries to confront Liam directly, but experiences a PTSD flashback. Ash shoots Liam, angered by his remarks, and Caleb tries to stop Liam from bleeding out, reminded of how he watched Franci die.

There's nothing he can do for Liam here, so Liam dies.

After Dolores and Caleb arrive at the airfield, Caleb has some doubts as to whether or not they are doing the right thing. His hands are still stained with Liam's blood, representing a sense of guilt for what happened, as well as foreshadowing what he'll learn the next time we see him, in Passed Pawn.

CALEB: Maybe Liam was right. Maybe people shouldn't know their own fate. DOLORES: People have the right to know. You wanted to know, right? CALEB: Well, maybe I'm not like other people. DOLORES: Neither am I.

Dolores boards the jet and Caleb has a moment of hesitation, as if he's maybe thinking about leaving instead, before ultimately choosing to board the jet and continue on with following and helping Dolores.

The mythology series [Jonsa] ~ Isis and Osiris, the ‘ghost’ king and his resilient wife

Ciao my Jonsa folks! (and those lurking, or just curious!), here I am with another instalment of the mythology series pertaining possible parallels between myths and the couple formed by Jon and Sansa in the world of asoiaf.

As always, the premises still stand — no I am not an expert, yes it's all for fun and because of my curiosity, and yes if you are an expert and know better I'll appreciate your input — and for this cycle this time we go to Egypt and to one of my favourite mythological parallels of the Jonsa ship.

Put your seatbelt on, it's going to be a ride! (again)

Isis and Osiris, the dutiful, resilient wife and the ‘ghost’ king — a ghost wolf, as big as mountains (Egyptian mythology vs. GRRM Asoiaf)

All around was empty air and sky, the ground falling away sharply to either side. There was ice underfoot, and broken stones just waiting to turn an ankle, and the wind was howling fiercely. As always, I cannot stress enough, these pieces of art are not mine, nor do I claim them as such, they are amazing pieces shared online and they belong to their creators, my only merit, if it is even that, is having collected them to make this series of metas more aesthetically pleasing!

So, let's hop onto the story of Osiris and Isis.

As with most myths the story itself varies locally, and marginally during the ages in which it has been transcripts but some details remain the same; for example we should differ the roman-greek transcription of this myth as it is influenced by details that are not egyptian in truth, while a full record of the entire myth by egyptian hand has gone lost, we have myriads of stories, funerary spells, etcetera that depict variants of this same myth, or add details necessary for the purpose of the text in which is featured the story. This makes the myth of Osiris and Isis one of the most detailed and cohesive of egyptian myths that arrived to us.

The myth touches a series of problematics that could be (read: are) featured in asoiaf as well, and primarily not only the matter of resurrection [some time I'll really, really have to wrap up my series of metas about resurrected characters in asoiaf] but also that of succession (who should succeed the previous king? His brother or his son?). And I think we can all see how this features perfectly in asoiaf with the character of Jon as Osiris (as what we have now — up until the moment Jon gets killed by his sworn brothers Aegon could've been a candidate as well, but since Jon has been betrayed by his sworn brothers and killed and we know he will be resurrected...well he remains the sole candidate for this role).

So...let's see why Osiris and Jon fit almost like a glove.

Osiris, the wise and just king and Jon the “king hidden under the snow”

“(...) kings are a rare sight in the North” Robert snorted “More likely they were hiding under the snow! Snow, Ned!” — Eddard I, AGOT, GRRM Tyrion Lannister had claimed that most men would rather deny a hard truth than face it, but Jon was done with denials. He was who he was; Jon Snow, bastard and oathbreaker, motherless, friendless, and damned. For the rest of his life—however long that might be—he would be condemned to be an outsider, the silent man standing in the shadows who dares not speak his true name. — Jon IX, AGOT, GRRM

So, Osiris was a foreign king who came to Egypt bringing with himself a new set of law and skills that he taught the egyptians who loved him and respected him.

So far so good: Jon is born from a foreign dynasty (the Targaryens) and the Starks who are a beloved dynasty in the North, he is loved by his sworn brothers to the point they name him, at seventeen, Lord Commander of the Nights Watch. He, himself teaches some of his brothers how to fight.

Osiris was beloved because he was just, smart and honorable. Jon is beloved for those same things — he has done some fucked up shit, like forcing Gilly to swap the babies — but as those characteristics breed love and loyalty, they also breed disloyalty and envy.

Osiris' own brother, Seth, betrayed him — made him a casket precisely build with his measurements — and then tricked him into entering it, closing the lid and ensuring he died before setting the corpse and casket into the Nile's currents.

Another check: Jon's own sworn brothers (the brothers he chose over Robb, though he chose fakeArya over them) betray him — convince him to join them outside with tales of his own uncle news, fashioned exactly to appeal perfectly to Jon's nature and love for his family, just like the casket was fashioned precisely with Osiris measurements — and kill him leaving him to bleed out in coldness.

Osiris later gets resurrected even if his own body pieces are scattered around all of Egypt, he is sewn back together by his sister-wife, and returned to life under the full moon (which, coincidentally is pretty much linked forever with wolves and werewolves, men turning into wolves in that very night and the Starks' sigil is the direwolf and all of them are wargs, why Sansa is said to have changed into a wolf with bat-like wings and flown away) and has to walk in the kingdom of the dead of which he is now the king.

Anyone thinking of Sansa sewing a cloak exactly like Ned Stark's and gifting it to Jon thus claiming him as a Stark and sewing back his identity as a northerner after all he wanted to do once reawaken was to hide away? No? Only I?

Jon, we know, will get resurrected by Melisandre and imo (but yes, you'll have to wait until I finally post my series of metas about resurrection in asoiaf) that means Jon will return but not all of him will return, only his most pure, primordial nature will return with him.

A wolf protecting his pack, which was the identity he chose (Arya over the NW) when he died... and who is en route to him? Sansa, as the show has suggested they'll be the first two Starks to reunite.

Also, is entirely possible Sansa calling his name or singing (as one of his fonder memories of Sansa is her singing softly to herself as she brushes her direwolf's fur) will bring him back to himself more, transforming him from a dead-man walking, to a living person again.

In the show it's Sansa who gives Jon purpose after he chooses to leave the NW and the whole of Westeros to its fate. She's the one who makes him fight again and the hidden (or not so hidden) motive for all of his actions in the last seasons.

Isis is a figure that assumed more and more importance and influence as the centuries passed as, in the first centuries of egyptian culture she was mostly unknown and obscure, though the priests of the temple of Re, consacred to the god of the Sun developed her myth and she turned out to be the matriarch of the egyptian pantheon and one of its primal figureheads.

She was the sister-wife of Osiris and sister of Seth and Nephthys.

She is highly linked with queenship and kingship to the point the hieroglyph associated with her is also the same that spells the word ‘throne’ — “The girl's happiness is not my purpose, nor should it be yours. Our alliances in the south may be as solid as Casterly Rock, but there remains the north to win, and the key to the north is Sansa Stark.” Tyrion III, ASOS — she's often depicted with a crown with the solar disk and/or the horns of a cow (a symbol of motherhood and fertility), she could depicted as a series of animals scorpions, sow or cows but especially a bird.

Sansa, while being the first of Ned's children to be called ‘wolf-girl’ (Sansa I, AGOT) is called by Cersei ‘little dove’ and by the Hound ‘little bird’ (both are denigratory) and the bird imaginary doesn't stop there, in fact after she escapes KL, the people around the known world (story of it reaches even Braavos!) say she killed the king with a spell and then turned into a wolf with the wings of a bat and flew away from the Red Keep.

Also, Arya when she learns of this rumor comments on how Sansa knows only song, and songs in Egypt like in any other ancient culture, were highly connected to magic and religion.

What did Isis bring with herself when she followed her husband to Egypt? She was known to support her husband wholeheartedly (“Jon is our king” and bookSansa supporting Robert as lord of the Eyrie, helping her cousin through the snow and peril as she feels Jon and Ghost) she taught women to sew (what is Sansa shown doing in the very first appearance? Stitching the same way she'll stitch back the northern independence cause), brew beer and bake (all feminine traits) and she could change into a bird. She's also heavily connected to motherhood and the fact that she hides her son until he is of age to take back the throne not in her own name but in her son's name — "Balon Greyjoy thinks in terms of plunder, not rule. Let him enjoy an autumn crown and suffer a northern winter. He will give his subjects no cause to love him. Come spring, the northmen will have had a bellyful of krakens. When you bring Eddard Stark's grandson home to claim his birthright, lords and little folk alike will rise as one to place him on the high seat of his ancestors. You are capable of getting a woman with child, I hope?" Tyrion III, ASOS — She was the perfect queen for egyptians, content to stay in the shadows of power, letting the men take the limelight but capable of using her wit and female diplomacy skills to guard both husband and son should the need arise. The same way Sansa is using her wit and her diplomacy skills to make sure Robert is loved by the knights of the Vale as @elegantwoes has analyzed in her post about the various purposes her arc in the Vale has (and her parallels with Cat in that aspects), especially with the Winged Knights, pertaining the way nobility sees her and her role, x.

[On a footnote, I think it's highly important the way Jon connects some of the things that have been said to him to his siblings when he thinks of them. For example he thinks of them in the order of succession so Robb, Bran and Rickon as the three trueborn sons of Ned Stark first and then he thinks of the girls, Sansa and then Arya. He nestles things that had been said to him and will have a very important impact on his life after his death between important siblings. He says this: «He thought of Robb, with melting snowflakes into his hair. Kill the boy and let the man be born. He thought of Bran, clambering up a tower wall, agile as a monkey. Of Rickon's breathless laughter. Of Sansa, brushing out Lady's coat and singing softly to herself. You know nothing, Jon Snow. He thought of Arya, her hair as tangled as a bird nest. I made him a warm cloak from the skin of the six whores who came with him to Winterfell. I want my bride back...» this is, imo, a passing of the baton, between the one he'd think of first, and who will get it last. Robb was supposed to get Winterfell over him (who too wanted Winterfell and be its lord) and became KitN but it was not meant to last, and the baton is passed to Bran who he remembers doing what he does best, climbing up the towers agiler than any of them (metaphorically surpassing obstacles they'd never even approach) and what does he associates with kingship and lordship over Winterfell? Maester Aemon: “kill the boy and let the man be born” which could intertwine nicely with him discovering Robb's will and him choosing still to pass Winterfell over the Sansa (“Winterfell belongs to my sister, Sansa” and showJon giving Sansa ladyship over Winterfell through the lord's chambers “You're the lady of Winterfell” which she remains even after he's named king). Then we have Rickon (I don't want to address his breathless laughter, because no, Jon, you might have foreseen your own death but I'm refusing to believe you're foreshadowing Rickon's death. No. I am in denial over it, sue me) and in a full circle we have the girls. Jon has always favored Arya over all of his other siblings and in fact he dies thinking of Arya who he has chosen over the NW neutrality, he considers her, as his sister “his heart” the point is that between thinking of Sansa and Arya, Jon interposes Ygritte. Ygritte who resembles Arya but with whom Jon falls in love because of her similarities with Sansa, her red hair, her singing and her easy smile what is Sansa doing in his memory? (I've spoken of how Ygritte is only a vessel for Sansa in Jon's arc, go check it out if you are interested, x and x and the parallels with courteous love here) Singing softly to herself brushing Lady's coat.

While, instead for Arya he remembers her with her hair all tangled up like a bird nest (I discussed a bit how Jon and Sansa want the same thing which differ from what Arya wants and where her journey is headed, x) so if above between Robb and Bran the baton is passed from the oldest to the younger, here the journey is the opposite, with the baton being passed from the younger (Arya) to the older (Sansa). Jon has been thinking more of Arya than Sansa, thought some would think it was a coping mechanism not too think too much of the sister he had some strange sort of attraction to... I mean Sansa does embody everything Jon wishes of in a partner, but I am digressing; anyway he's thinking and being spurned into action thinking of Arya yet he interposes Ygritte between them and in a full circle as between Robb with melting snowflakes in his hair and Bran doing what Bran does best, approaching and surpassing obstacles they would not approach, the same thing happens between Arya and Sansa, he thinks of Arya with her hair all tangled and of Sansa doing what Sansa does best taking care of others (Lady — as the Lady) while singing like a maid from a song. We see the pattern, do we not? Then, after Arya he thinks of what spurned him in action, word of what had happened to Mance and the death of the spear wives and Ramsay wanting ‘Arya/his bride’ back).

Is Jon supposed to end up saving a ‘bride’ from her ‘husband’ beyond what he did for Alys Karstark? I did say that Ghost fighting the black dog during Jon I, AGOT might foreshadow Jon defending Sansa from the Hound but we have also another possible contender, a contender GRRM had meant for a triangle with Jon Snow from his first draft: 🥁 Tyrion Lannister, Sansa's husband 🥁]

Nephthys the Goddess of decay and death and Arya Stark acolyte of the Faceless Men

A bruise is a lesson, she told herself, and each lesson makes us better. Syrio stepped back “You're dead now” — Arya IV, AGOT, GRRM

Nephthys was the goddess of death, decay and birth and she was the youngest daughter of Geb and Nut (parents of Osiris and Isis as well as of Seth) and she was also the goddess of the rivers (and a good portion of Arya voyage after she leaves KL, is in the Riverlands where she starts to understand the way common folk are condemned and destroyed by the plays and games of the nobles). She is considered the mother of Anubis which is either conceived, in some myths, with her husband Seth or after an adulterine intercourse with Osiris, whom she deceived by wearing her sister and his wife's face, looking like Isis!

And who is an acolyte of the Faceless Men in Braavos as of now?, wearing another skin and face?

«I can become someone else, speak in their voice, live in their skin. I can even become you. (...) all I need to find out is your face» — Arya Stark to Sansa Stark in s7e6, GoT.

In another myth, instead, Osiris rapes her and that would be the source of animosity between Seth and Osiris.

While in the beginning her egyptian name — Nebhtet — has been translated as “Mistress of the House” wrongly assuming her as a goddess of the homely hearth (and this reminds me of Arya baking in the books and baking the death-pie in the series), the most probable and correct translation would be instead “Mistress of the Temple” which refers to her sacerdotal duties (which reminds me of Arya's own ambitions and her role as an acolyte of the Faceless Men in Braavos)

Arya cocked her head to one side. "Can I be a king's councillor and build castles and become the High Septon?" — Eddard V, AGOT

Nephthys was considered a very important member of the pantheon, on the same level as her sister; which again reminds me of the crypts trailer in which Sansa, Jon and Arya are all on the same place of honor, all three of them with statues of their own.

Also...Ned says this to Arya, a little bit before he is executed:

“Sansa is your sister. You may be as different as the sun and the moon, but the same blood flows through both your hearts. You need her, as she needs you … and I need both of you, gods help me” — Arya II, AGOT

And one of the funeral inscriptions of the V dynasty recites in the pyramids:

Rise and fall. Descend with Nephthys, and sink in the darkness with the Boat of the Night. Rise and fall. Rise with Isis, arise with the Boat of the Day.

She was considered important and unsettling, but not for that less beloved and she was the protectress of the act of dying as she gave strength to the dying to pass onto the next life. The demons of the afterlife trembled before Isis and Nephthys both, and often the goddesses were associated and considered as a unit, working together — the same way Sansa and Arya will work together, the harpist and the water dancer holding the hidden dagger.

By some recent studies it appears that Nephthys is considered as Seth's wife, but not the Seth antagonistic of the myth of Osiris' death, but the benign version of the western oasis in which he is co-regnant with his wife.

Nephthys does hold an important role in the myth of Osiris resurrection as she is the one helping her sister — and crying along her — to get back all the dismembered pieces of Osiris and also helps the sister to raise Horus, working as a unit.

Legality of ascension to the throne, Osiris is killed, Horus rises, part I

Osiris is killed, as we've seen, by his own brother, Seth, grown envious of him. At first Seth simply fashions a casket with Osiris measurements and then closes the lid assuring himself Osiris dies and sends his body down the Nile. When he discovers Isis has found the body he dismembers it and scatters all pieces around all of Egypt thus claiming the throne as Osiris' heir. In the meantime Isis helped by Nephthys has found all pieces of Osiris' body — save for his manhood — and has resurrected him on the night of the full moon. Once resurrected though, Osiris can no longer be king of Egypt as he is dead, and claims his throne as king of the Afterlife. But, before doing so, he sires a true born son from his wife, Isis, Horus — a god with the head of a falcon — whom Isis goes into hiding with as Seth governs Egypt.

When Horus is old enough to reclaim the throne he battles his own uncle, Seth, for the throne and to avenge Osiris' murder; ending up victorious and becoming king of Egypt; but during the fight his left eyes is poked out — I've lost count of the metas about how Jon will possibly lose an eye and end up having a scarred face after all is said and done — and magically comes alive.

Though Horus won the throne, there was still the matter of whom legally owed the throne. Seth affirmed the throne belonged to him as Osiris' brother and Horus' uncle; while Horus affirmed the throne was rightfully his as Osiris' son and heir. Ultimately it was decided that the throne belonged to Horus thus the line to the throne did not move horizontally between brothers, but vertically between sire and heir.

C'mon, anyone who has read asoaif know this (⬆️) is one of the subjects that has been confronted by the books.

[A note, we're talking only of trueborn children, as the baseborn or bastardborn ones are not considered in the line of succession if not after all true born heirs, vertically or horizontally have died]

Robert was the undisputed king of the Iron throne (legally) at the beginning of AGOT as he has won the realm through conquest and has been offered the crown; when he dies he thinks Joffrey, as his son, will inherit the throne but Joffrey is a bastard, thus Robert does not have trueborn heirs at which point his heir is Stannis, his brother, because Robert died without trueborn children.

Stannis thus reclaims the Iron throne, just as Joffrey does, and he names Shireen, his only child, as his heir going as far, for now, as to have his people swear to put Shireen on the Iron throne if he dies before he takes it.

BUT, Renly, Robert and Stannis' youngest brother, reclaims the throne as well, wrongfully, as he is the youngest (thus he cannot come before Stannis and Shireen, as the line of succession moves horizontally only after vertically it has extinguished).

At the same time in the east Viserys, as Aerys only surviving son, reclaims the Iron throne as his as he is Aerys' heir. When Viserys dies childless the Targaryen line moves horizontally to his sister, Daenerys and to the children she would bear (which would've put Rhaego forward on the line to the throne even before the mother as Viserys' nephew, as the line to the Iron throne passes women over in favor of the males).

In the meantime, in hiding, Aegon reclaims the Iron throne as a claimant because he is the heir of Rhaegar the crown prince to the Iron throne and if his identity is confirmed it puts him before both Viserys and Daenerys in line for the Iron throne, as that would mean that he and any heir he might sire would have to die before the line of succession move horizontally toward Viserys and then Daenerys.

In the same way, Jon as Rhaegar's son — a man raised in Westeros by the most honorable man of the 7K and a man who has protected the Realm from the wights threat — may come before Daenerys in case of Aegon's death, in four cases:

if he's trueborn —› thus after Aegon, who is older, and his possible children; Jon would be the next in line as things stand in the Targaryen line.

if he's legitimized and named by Aegon in an attempt to remove Daenerys from the line —› in the same way as Robb put Jon's claim to Winterfell and the North above Sansa and Arya's by legitimizing Jon as a Stark; thus Jon still does not come before either Bran or Rickon, but he can come before the girls.

if he's offered the throne and declared by the lords over Daenerys despite his bastardy —› the lords of Westeros would sooner accepted a man they do not consider a foreign, who appeases both to the Targaryen loyalists by being Rhaegar's son and the lords who stood against the Targaryens by having the support of Ned Stark's children (for one of whom he has been killed) and having being raised by Ned Stark in Westeros; while Daenerys is a barren woman (which holds a very big influence in the political game of Westeros) who was raised in exile and comes like an invader with dothraki and unsullied and dragons and whose ‘destiny’ is to give her enemies ‘fire and blood’.

Even by being baseborn, with Daenerys being barren he is the only Targaryen/bastard Targaryen who can continue the line, or if he has already sired a true born son to his name.

Similarly in the North Bran, as he is alive, is the rightful king in the North after Robb, as Robb died childless. After him comes Rickon if he abdicates or dies childless, and after Rickon (same as before) comes Sansa as the oldest female of the line and any child she might bear (especially if male) and if she dies childless or abdicates then comes Arya as the youngest daughter. Only in case Arya dies childless or abdicates it's Jon turns as the son of Lyanna Stark thus as a cousin, but he would need to marry either a Stark or another kin (a Karstark — Alys Karstark is already married — for example) to legitimize his right to Winterfell.

This is talking legally speaking. Realistically speaking the one that became king was the one who won through conquest and was recognized as such by the lords and ladies of the kingdom (this is the way Robert became the rightful king of the Iron throne, making of the Targaryens nothing but claimants).

I think that Jon could actually embody — just like Sansa with LF and the Lady Stark-Bael-lord Stark retelling (x)— both Osiris, the dead and resurrected king, and Horus the prince hidden by his mother (by his mother's side — he was hidden and protected by Ned, Lyanna's brother) coming to reclaim his throne from the ambitious and cunning uncle (aunt). Which is why it wouldn't surprise me if he ended up fighting Daenerys (to defend his family, the Starks and Aegon — because, what kind of man watches his brother burn and does nothing?) and then abdicate (like Osiris did) to favor Bran or to accept the lords naming Bran in his place as he might end up banished from the South and in the North, or if he chooses the name Stark over Targaryen thus coming automatically and legally after Bran.

BUT,

The not so small detail of Jon being resurrected from death associates him primordially and almost inseparably with Osiris more than any other character, and Sansa by embodying Isis' characteristics (as I've explained before) might end up being his wife or as I've said many times the untold reason for everything he does even if the romance between them remains always in hiding instead of in the light, told to us only through their thoughts; and wouldn't it be typical of Jon to abdicate because “I died, I was passed over” to one of his siblings?

Also, there is the matter of both Bran and Rickon being alive and in hiding, one of whom is being collected by Davos, means the will making of Jon king in the North will be neutralized by the true born heirs being still alive and Horus could be Bran —

The Rise of Brandon of House Stark, Osiris is killed, Horus rises, part II

Guess you weren't expecting that!, or perhaps you were.

Horus, in the myth, is a disabled God (he loses his eye during the battle against Seth) but his disability has also empowered him magically (his eye has become a magic symbol of healing). Brandon is the prince to Winterfell, after Robb's death he's the rightful king in the North by law, and he calls himself Bran the Broken, because he is disabled as he has lost the use of his legs and yet in his disability he has found power, as being forced to not be able to move of his own volition has sped forth his training in learning how to harness the natural ability he has, as a Stark, to warg and green-seeing.

Horus is Osiris' son and the prince of Egypt who has been usurped by his uncle. In the same way, if Jon accepts the will Robb made, which makes of him a Stark and the new king in the North he is unwittingly usurping Brandon's — his cousin's — claim to the North. Though this remains to be seen, as Jon has more than once ‘abdicated’ in a way i favor of Sansa, who is a female and legally doesn't carry the Stark name anymore (though the marriage with Tyrion was a sham, Jon has no way to know this, and the argument that Sansa is now lady Lannister is used countlessly to convince him to take Winterfell); it's difficult to imagine he won't do the same for Brandon who legally comes before him anyway; in the same way as Jon has refused Winterfell and defended Sansa's claim to it as Bran and Rickon's heir, Osiris abdicated his own right to the throne of Egypt to put forward his own son, Horus as claimant and heir; possibly Jon will use the same excuse — having being killed, having been dead and thus passed over — to abdicate in favor of Brandon thus in a way getting everything he had wanted to begin with.

In fact the theme of Jon abdicating in favor of his true born siblings his desires is the foremost theme in Jon's arc since the very first chapter of AGOT.

In Bran I, AGOT Jon advocates for the Starklings to keep the direwolf pups even when everyone wants to kill 'em, and the count only comes correct because he counts himself out.

Bran saw his father's face change, saw the other men exchange glances. He loved Jon with all his heart at that moment. Even at seven, Bran understood what his brother had done. The count had come right only because Jon had omitted himself. He had included the girls, included even Rickon, the baby, but not the bastard who bore the surname Snow, the name that custom decreed be given to all those in the north unlucky enough to be born with no name of their own. Their father understood as well. "You want no pup for yourself, Jon?" he asked softly. "The direwolf graces the banners of House Stark," Jon pointed out. "I am no Stark, Father." — Bran I, AGOT

The result?, Jon gets a pup of his own, Ghost, an albino who carries the colors of the Heart Tree (the white and the red), a gift from the Old Gods to reward Jon's selfless act.

Later, Stannis offers to free Jon of his vows to the NW and make of him a Stark and the rightful lord of Winterfell. To Jon's knowledge he is the last male Stark of the line, as Robb is confirmed dead and Rickon and Bran are believed dead. Arya is presumed dead as well and only Sansa remains of the true born children of Ned Stark, with a new name that speaks of an allegiance that would make the lords of the North grimace. She's Lady Lannister.

Yet, Jon defends Sansa's claim to Winterfell above his own.

I would need to steal her if I wanted her love, but she might give me children. I might someday hold a son of my own blood in my arms. A son was something Jon Snow had never dared dream of, since he decided to live his life on the Wall. I could name him Robb. Val would want to keep her sister's son, but we could foster him at Winterfell, and Gilly's boy as well. Sam would never need to tell his lie. We'd find a place for Gilly too, and Sam could come visit her once a year or so. Mance's son and Craster's would grow up brothers, as I once did with Robb. He wanted it, Jon knew then. He wanted it as much as he had ever wanted anything. I have always wanted it, he thought, guiltily. May the gods forgive me. It was a hunger inside him, sharp as a dragonglass blade. A hunger . . . he could feel it. It was food he needed, prey, a red deer that stank of fear or a great elk proud and defiant. He needed to kill and fill his belly with fresh meat and hot dark blood. His mouth began to water with the thought. — Jon XII, ASOS

You can't be the Lord of Winterfell, you're bastard-born, he heard Robb say again. And the stone kings were growling at him with granite tongues. You do not belong here. This is not your place. When Jon closed his eyes he saw the heart tree, with its pale limbs, red leaves, and solemn face. The weirwood was the heart of Winterfell, Lord Eddard always said . . . but to save the castle Jon would have to tear that heart up by its ancient roots, and feed it to the red woman's hungry fire god. I have no right, he thought. Winterfell belongs to the old gods. — Jon XII, ASOS

"How can I lose men I do not have? I had hoped to bestow Winterfell on a northman, you may recall. A son of Eddard Stark. He threw my offer in my face." Stannis Baratheon with a grievance was like a mastiff with a bone; he gnawed it down to splinters. "By right Winterfell should go to my sister Sansa." "Lady Lannister, you mean? Are you so eager to see the Imp perched on your father's seat? I promise you, that will not happen whilst I live, Lord Snow." — Jon I, ADWD

“(...)Which would you have as Lord of Winterfell, Snow? The smiler or the slayer?" Jon said, "Winterfell belongs to my sister Sansa." "I have heard all I need to hear of Lady Lannister and her claim." — Jon IV, ADWD

So, if we go by the tradition set in Bran I, AGOT; Jon should end up getting his own version — a rightful version — of what he wanted. Then it would come into play also his parentage, at which point Jon would have a claim to the whole of Westeros and the North at his back, ralling after him.

In the end, if Jon ends up abdicating as he did before to Bran who is the northern true king as of now, and who might be named king of the whole realm because of his foreshadowed sacrifice of his own magic — which is what makes him feel able to be empowered again and not useless — this might mean that in reward Jon might did got Winterfell, the wife and the children. And who else shares in the same dream in the same way and is foreshadowed as much as Bran to become queen, but Queen in the North? Sansa Stark.

The similarities with Horus do not end there.

Horus has the head of a falcon, and one of the translations of his name means “He who is distant”, “he who is/climbs above”; Horus was also associated with the sky and his eyes begun to be considered as the sun and the moon — Brandon's sisters, the sisters he strives to find and defend, are associated with the moon and the sun and their foreshadowed protector, Brienne, bears on her sigil the sun and the moon; the same Brienne the show has at the end as Lady Commander of the Kingsguard — the eye he lost was given back to him, in the myth, by the God Toth (the God of knowledge and science and writing) but Horus refuses it and gifts it to his father, Osiris, instead to sustain his strength as king in the Afterlife, which makes me think of Bran giving independence to the North under Sansa, as the show suggested, thus banishing Jon (who would be a threat as Rhaegar's son) thus loosing part of what is supposed to be his (the 7K he would be named to) and giving Jon in the meantime everything he wanted.

Also, Horus took the form of falcon and Brandon is the winged wolf.

"You will never walk again, Bran," the pale lips promised, "but you will fly." — Bran II, ADWD

The moon was a crescent, thin and sharp as the blade of a knife. A pale sun rose and set and rose again. Red leaves whispered in the wind. Dark clouds filled the skies and turned to storms. Lightning flashed and thunder rumbled, and dead men with black hands and bright blue eyes shuffled round a cleft in the hillside but could not enter. Under the hill, the broken boy sat upon a weirwood throne, listening to whispers in the dark as ravens walked up and down his arms. "You will never walk again," the three-eyed crow had promised, "but you will fly." Sometimes the sound of song would drift up from someplace far below. The children of the forest, Old Nan would have called the singers, but those who sing the song of earth was their own name for themselves, in the True Tongue that no human man could speak. The ravens could speak it, though. Their small black eyes were full of secrets, and they would caw at him and peck his skin when they heard the songs. The moon was fat and full. — Bran III, ADWD

Notice this chapter is followed by Jon VII (in which Jon is battling with himself and the fact that Jeyne posing as Arya is in Ramsay' clutches), the choice Jon will make in the end will cause his death (moving against Winterfell to save Arya).

The mention of the passing of time, the crescent moon becoming full and fat makes me wonder... under which moon was Jon assassinated?

If it follows the myth of Osiris whatever the moon he has been assassinated under (possibly a dark moon?), he should be resurrected under the full moon, or under another type of moon but remain ‘indisposed’ to return to himself once he find himself back with a Stark, since he will return possibly in his purest form — a defender of the Starks. So when he meets Sansa...I wonder if they'll meet or she'll awake him back under a full moon. But this is speculation.

It is foreshadowed Brandon will reject magic, the magic that gives him power, and his dark master to save the realm (and one of Horus epithets is also ‘savior of Egypt’) remaining nothing but Bran the Broken, which is more than enough to be chosen to become the new king; in the same way as Horus gave his now healed eye to Osiris to give him strength in his new life.

We know Bran will end to be king of the six kingdoms — as that is a major detail that will remain the same as per Martin own affirmations — just in the same way as Horus became king of Egypt.

By this interpretation the Starklings would serve different the tropes of different mythology figures of the same myth:

Osiris — Jon

Isis — Sansa

Arya — Nephthys

Bran — Horus

Could Rickon be used by Stannis against Jon and maybe even Sansa? And thus fulfill, if unwillingly, the part of Seth? I dislike this very much tbh, but it's a possibility that could happen (Stannis trying to unthrone Jon and his authority as Ned Stark only alive son, after he learns Robb has named him heir, by using Rickon whose Davos has been sent to retrieve); after all in some of the myths Isis fights with Horus because she asks that Seth is spared (as he is her brother still) and it comes to the point that Horus even beheads her, to then heal her and reconcile with her.

Though I am more confident of the brothers of the NW serving as a Seth stand in.

Umineko EP7. Replay Part 1

The contrast between the somber, funeral, scenes of Battler with Beatrice's corpse and the inquisitor scenes with LiberatedLiberator playing are very funny.... also the battler scenes are very tender. "Then, he kissed (The book), ...and laid it gently in the casket" The game is making me sad already lol. Wonder if people who had figured that S = K but not Sayo were stumped by this... I mean it would be short-lived since the episode reveals what happened but. R07 does like testing even the readers that did get the answer.

Will is obviously the ideal Battler that Battler hoped Sayo would be, the one who would look for the heart of her mystery, and he's very dashing in this scene lol, sadly the reality is different than the ideal.... This episode has a pretty good opening, actually, I like it a lot. The funeral scene where everyone has their own reaction to the death of Beatrice is interesting, it really highlights how many different things and people 'Beatrice' is. Speaking of people 'Beatrice' is....

This episode has a bunch of new songs, I forgot how many songs were unique to or introduced in this episode, it adds to the unique vibe this episode has, also they are all really good so.... Lion is so "mild-mannered" (as the game puts it) that he just straight up ignores that there's a flying girl in front of him and just tells her to step off the altar, lol.

Bernkastel introduces the mystery of "Who Killed Beatrice?" along with the side-mystery of who is Lion. Lion is extremely annoyed by all this.

Lion having no memory of Kanon is the first hint introduced, besides being Natsuhi's child. Lion mentions being used to unreasonable situations due to being forced to deal with Kinzo.... which is kind of ironic when you think about how that is true for Sayo in a completely different way. Will didn't seem to see Lion as much more than just a clueless, curious, piece at first but his demeanor forced him to acknowledge a piece as an equal. It is a pretty endearing relationship that was definitely pulled off nicely in the short time they had. Eva is uh, definitely not happy about the existence of Lion....

Everyone's really comfortable calling Beatrice his mistress here - in main worlds, it seemed to be a more taboo topic.... the fact that the witch legend didn't exist in this world probably lead to people talking about Beatrice-as-a-Person more in this fragment I suppose.

I wouldn't put it that confidently but.... it's not like ignoring her and letting her be locked in a cage where she is under Kinzo's control is a good place to be either.

Non-voiced dialogue.... right yeah this episode was censored a lot during the console version.

Bernkastel gets the theatergoing ability from Bernkastel in order to force Kinzo to talk. Shannon reveals she struggles to remember Lion, and Will catches this. They talk, and he orders her to bring Kanon, she hints at Sayo and Shannon.exe starts breaking down from conflicting instructions. She starts referring to Sayo as "The one who orders us"

This scene's pretty interesting... because if you think about it the one would get checkmate is Beato and not Will right? But Will is the one getting warned. I have been kind of rocking my head at this for a bit - but I can see a couple interpretations. I could see it as a commentary on how S = K isn't the full answer and you need to keep thinking above that to reach a real answer - on a meta-level maybe Will would have been fucked by forcing an illegal move idk. Interesting scene to think about lol.

Kinzo: Beatrice is mine alone. No matter what anyone says, no one can defile our story. Ugh, gross to think about. You yourself already defiled your own story with Beatrice, Kinzo. Genji starts being pushy about Beatrice II being Beatrice reborn.... no wonder Sayo can't get herself to have positive feelings toward Genji. I can find myself as having more sympathy towards Kumasawa, though.... I think the way making pranks passed from one to the other is cute and in general seems to have less power and willingness to enable Kinzo... still, though, the fact the person is basically your mother hiding your dad's abuse and having you play along with a dumb riddle game for the sake of said abuser.... The images of Kumasawa thinking she's playing dead and slowly realizing she is in fact being killed makes me sad, though.

Kumasawa: "You could sometimes catch a glimpse of his great love for the late Beatrice-sama, and it was a heart-warming thing."... Kumasawa's way of saying Kinzo is a groomer without saying it directly, and Will catches on to what she actually means. Oh Lion starts crying right now when the only thing he knows is that he did some grooming.... your day is about to get so much worse Lion. "Everything was decided by someone other than me".... and Kinzo eventually ended up putting that burden on several Beatrices, the one who ironically broke him free of that hell.

We get a bunch of introductions to the overall setting, Kinzo talking about how he's waiting to die and about how he hates pretty much everyone else on the island. Then Kinzo meets Beatrice and they immediately hit it off. I forgot the first talk they had with each other after meeting each other was about how they both feel controlled and defined by their families.... it makes sense they can relate to each other in that way. It is sad to think that instead of breaking that chain Kizno instead furthered it to about 10 different people.

Ah, hahaha, it's kind of sad to think about how Kinzo's wife was definitely bothered about the cheating... it'd be one thing if they both didn't give a fuck about the relationship but.... Natsuhi mentions relating to her once I think so I can't imagine her situation was happy, whatever it was.

The reveal of the tens of gold comes from the Italians no longer being able to hide it due to their ship sinking slowly.

Weird tangent but it's kind of fascinating to see Kinzo as an interpreter because I work as a professional Spanish-english interpreter... Kinzo does sooooo many things that would get me fired haha. Of course, he's not a professional interpreter and I am certainly not a wartime interpreter. Kinzo is a liar in his retelling of the events, of course, in actuality he was the one who first recommended shooting the Italians first. The choice is framed as letting everyone but you and the person you love die but uh, it is closer to risking her life and hoping she's fine.

It was certainly not his intention to let her die but.... it's certainly a risk he should have considered more thoroughly before deciding to blow the Italians up.

Kinzo: "Can't you see that you caused all this because you were blinded by gold." Yeah, sure Kinzo, they did.

Part of what drove even Beatrice 1 to wanting to die is the fact that Kinzo's planning got everyone close to her killed....

Kinzo took Beatrice to Nanjo who kept the secret for him, and then Beatrice died during childbirth.

And then he's also bribed by Sayo, haha, I mean he isn't very good at lying in hindsight but also no one figured anything out *due* to him so....

Will talks about how Battler might have been removed as a way to make the puzzle harder which is interesting. Bernkastel DOES believe Battler remembers his promise to some extent even as a piece... Jessica probably feels less pressure in this world if anything... I can imagine not bearing the brunt of Natsuhi's expectations and allowed to be herself probably helps everyone in that relationship a little bit.

Maria corrects Will on his bible knowledge haha that's very cute. This line always struck to me and I always remember it... it's a way to connect why people use magic to a situation we all know. Obviously, this is not what the Bible meant but it did give her the power to love herself as is.

Maria mentions she told to everyone about how she wanted to meet the witch and then Beatrice appeared in front of her, in other words Sayo indulged her and they became good friends after that, hahaha. This is so cute I am crying.

Will gets into the non-existence of Lion with the chair arrangement and into the number of accomplices with the number of people able to see Beatrice.... Maria sure is a good witness when you bother to talk to her on her terms. Will reasons this was after Beatrice started existing but before it had anything to do with Battler. Will tells Jessica that he approves of her living her life like she wants to and keeping her hobbies in spite of it all... narrative points out this is probably the first time someone approved of how Jessica lived her life. Ouch. Jessica talks about how she doesn't gaf too much about Beatrice and how she thinks Maria is a bit freaky about being too into Maria and it was too vivid... which it quite literally was because she did meet Beatrice. Jessica is extremely classy about it.

Will chides her for being like this by pointing out her motto is creating another self how you want to be and that's exactly what Maria is doing.

Jessica coughing a ton in order to change the subject is brought up here. I think she probably does actually have asthma, though, just uses that to her advantage sometimes. Jessica is still gloomy about the argument a day later, she talks to Kumasawa about it and she dares her to curse her for that and uh, THEN she goes to Shannon and Gohda and denies it AGAIN... man Jessica you had like 4 chances to back down out of it. Jessica knows exactly what happened but is too scared to admit it to herself... I imagine that might be what is going on with Kinzo and Shkannon as well.

Will breaks Jessica's reality by pointing out the sitting arrangement issue, but I guess she'll probably just rationalize it anyway so it is fine.

Kinzo probably did his best to quit the rumors since they were rude and since his mental state was probably a bit better in this world and there was no Sayo to build the legend of the witch, well....

Will starts his description of who killed Beatrice by revealing that Maria can tell people apart not by their appearance but by their actions. "She believed the power of witches could change her unfulfilling and incomplete life".... I mean not wrong, but ouch...Lion makes the connection that Beatrice is kind of a character Sayo is playing. It's cool how the tension you feel in this scene as Will slowly edges to the conclusion.

Lion: Are you trying to say Beatrice and I are two sides of the same coin? Lion's 100% correct here lol. Lion starts getting pissed when he starts revealing Lion's backstory, which is understandable.... he can tell Kinzo DID have favoritism towards him so he keeps hearing though. This is kind of sad just itself.... Natsuhi and Lion have a good parent-child relationship if they are allowed to exist together it's just the circumstances that allow them to be together are too harsh for that to happen...

The choice of whether Lion will see Beatrice or not is interesting to me.... I mean, it won't be pretty and will add a bunch of trauma that he was saved from in this life, but.... Beatrice being seen and accepted by Lion would probably mean a lot to her, I think... I don't know what Lion would think of Beatrice but the idea of Lion denying her makes me very sad. It would probably be very hard to process though. Think there's kind of an implicit "Do you have the right to judge 'bad' people when they could have been you had you been born in different circumstances" kind of argument going on here. They start discussing Lion's gender, and we start talking about how that was a constant point of contention in the games, which is about the one thing that hasn't been spelled out yet by now...

R07 starts beating you over the head with how all the answers are available in ep1-4 and the next games were just answers lol. Probably a little frustrated by people at people having I'll wait until i get more hints approach. She's right though.... like Lambdadelta dropped soooo many hints and it was still not enough. Battler definitely deserves some shit.

Sayo is confused about why they were brought to Ushiromiya's family when they don't have any relevant skills. It's certainly not the beginning of it but it's probably the first time Sayo felt that her fate was being chosen by someone for reasons unknown to her.... Sayo was just in elementary school.... she really wasn't allowed much of any life before Genji started dragging her around for his plans. I wonder what Genji told Natsuhi to make an excuse for Sayo to get there. If you just tell her Kinzo said so she probably can't object too much though. They did what? Jesus christ, I forgot how bad her life was even pre-rokkenjima....

Sayo is helped by "Shannon", which is mentioned was her friend in the Gospel House as well... sad to think her life has sucked so much to this point that they had to make an imaginary friend before she even got to Rokkenjima. Ok yeah Natsuhi confirms she was told Kinzo just did this lol. I wonder what Kinzo thought but at this point I imagine he was too busy feeling guilty about Beatrice to care too much about the house going ons. Lion wakes up and says he doesn't regret finding out but he wants to forget which is a fair, probably. They start discussing how this was Genji's plan. Bernkastel starts taunting Lion about not being biological and everyone just kind of ignores her, which fair enough she doesn't even believe what she's saying. We go back to Clair's home life being kind of fucky. worsened by Genji's machinations.

I've kind of been avoiding the subject because it's really obvious but the Gospel House is really fucked. Stripping children of their names, sending them to work after middle school... Haha, I wonder why no one talks behind her back or why she can't pick up your tasks.

Natsuhi tells Sayo to not to be Jessica's friend, because of course she does. Sayo has every right to fucking hate Natsuhi. If only Genji chose to separate Kinzo from Sayo fully instead of making her entire life a redemption play for her mother's rapist.... They bring up the age difference and how it was necessary to have Natsuhi and Kinzo be fooled, which is another way in which Sayo's entire identity was denied for others. Sayo recounting the way she loses things sounds just like ADHD haha, anyways that's how Beatrice-Gaap is born. Sayo mentions how the reason she can 'see' things even when they are not there is due to the way she has been taught God is everywhere even though you can't see him. That's definitely interesting to me.... it's always interesting to hear about how children interpret religious superstitions, you definitely see a lot of children interpreting stuff like imaginary friends, mental illness, etc. Like that. Being perceived and understood is to be saved.

Sayo gives up and realizes the broom was outside and picks it up, in the meta she has become friends with the broom-stealing Beatrice. Kumasawa starts teaching her how to not lose stuff but filters it through magic talk, which becomes the basis for her entire system of magic.... Kumasawa.... again I think that Kumasawa is probably the most healthy relationship Sayo had for most of her life.

Sayo realizes when people who are cruel to her make the same mistake as the ones they mock her for it feels good... that's true even if she causes the mistake herself. An unsolicited AG review: Zip-Up Sweatsuit (2005)

Whaaaaaat? Me and Marisol are back after 2 years with another unsolicited outfit review? It's more likely than you think. Let's get dangerous into it.

Per the wiki: The Zip-Up Sweatsuit is a Just Like You outfit released in 2005 and retired in 2007. Retail cost was $24. The outfit was loosely tied to the first four Historical Character Mysteries, ie, they put them in the catalog together on the same page. Here's the attractive stock photo:

I've had this outfit on my wishlist for months. Why? I don't actually know what about it appealed to me. I was working on potential book titles for a "central series" (and more) for my Marisol doll, and I wanted a "sneaky" casual outfit for her mystery books. What better to sneak around and solve mysteries in than a cool dark purple sweatsuit? Now, I'm not usually one to buy early 2000s AG outfits. A lot of them feel kinda dated to me more than nostalgic, because I had Kirsten and that was it and my parents wouldn't buy me any other AG stuff until years later. So most outfits (Garden Party outfit and Heart-Print pjs, I'm looking at you) don't really do it for me. But the sweatsuit is pretty basic, and by 2005 AG had started to mellow out a bit with their designs and began leaning towards more casual outfits with mix and match appeal.

Mooooving on, I bought it. Like new, with box. And then got slightly stuck on how to style it. This outfit has 4 pieces. Tee shirt with lettuce hem, zip suit jacket (no hood, so not a hoodie), matching sweatpants, and sneakers. Pretty basic stuff.

The jacket and pants are nice. Thick (but not too thick to be doll scaled weight) and trimmed with berry-red topstitching and a red zipper. The jacket has a decal of a red star and says American Girl underneath it. This is repeated on the hip of the pants. This isn't AG's star logo, its a little more rounded than their innerstar design. Jacket loses a point for having fake pockets, but its cute and has great mix and match potential. Jacket gets an A. The pants get an A-, mostly because I don't typically dress my dolls in anything besides jeans or leggings or the occasional skirt, so I don't think my dolls will be wearing these much.

Now the tee. I don't really like lettuce hems. They're very Of An Era, and I always found them uncomfortable to wear. However, this shirt is really cute. The fabric is nice and thick, again without being too bulky. It's a great basic, and the simple tee design make sit easy to pair with a lot. However. This is the matching kid's shirt.

This design was featured on other products as well. The mystery party sets, and the bath products that were all marketed together with the first(?) historical mystery books. The doll tee, instead, has pastel colored circles instead of the pictures. Did they not show up well at scale: tiny? Did they not want to get too meta, in terms of dealing with the fact that your doll can wear another doll-slash-book character's face on their shirt? The world will never know. Luckily, that's why photoshop exists (see below). Shirt gets a solid B for good matching potential. I can see myself using this frequently.

Now onto the shoes. I hate them. I really do. AG had this weird period of time where all their sneakers were bulky, with thick soles, slightly pointed toes, and raw unfinished fabric edges at the top of the shoe. The Basketball outfit II (2005) and Tennis outfit II (also 2005) are other examples of this. I hate all of them. The do have one thing going for them. These sneakers go really nicely with this outfit. I like that they reversed the outfit colors, the sneakers are a dark pink that matches nicely with the red trim on the jacket and pants, with purple as an accent color. I will never use these shoes ever. C-

Now. Do I love all of the pieces of the zip-up sweatsuit outfit together? No. But, it works great for mixing and matching with other pieces, particularly things from around the same time. Here's how I styled it for Marisol's summer fit. Marisol lives in Chicago, but its not warm here in the PNW, and the jacket is still great for mystery solving at night.

She's wearing the jacket, tshirt (with the character images photoshopped on. Maybe I can look into iron on transfers, but they'd have to go on over the existing decals...hmmm) shorts from the 1998 Picnic Outfit, and my favorite sneakers from the 2001 Skateboard outfit. She's currently wearing Gabriela's red headphones with it, and it would also look really good with the red flowered headband from the 1998 Play outfit.

Overall, I'd say this outfit gets a hand wavy low A- for mix and matching potential. Have fun out there and don't do anything I wouldn't do!

I did mention that the Yakuza series has become my 3rd favorite, as the top 2 have nostalgia. And no, Pokemon is not among those two.

My top favorite franchise... the hints are scattered everywhere in my stories and on Tumblr. Though of course, you need to recognize those hints. The second favorite... well, it’s a lot more closely guarded.

I won’t reveal my second favorite franchise, because... let me keep some secrets. Hahaha.

My top favorite franchise of all time is... ... I did say that I was an RTS nut, right? I love real time strategy games. And what happens if you look up the most popular RTS game of all time?

Yes. My top favorite franchise of all time is Starcraft. “Starcraft is such a Korean game”. ... Well, I am Korean. And it’s not my fault that foreigners, aka non-Koreans, just can’t match Koreans in Starcraft I. In SC II, it’s a lot more diverse, which is great. But I’ve seen the #1 foreigner in SC I take on a Korean champion, in a 7-game showmatch, and lost all 7 games in a straight up stomping. ... And I’ve also seen a Korean guy beat a Chinese guy using his foot for the keyboard. There’s a reason why there are never any foreigners in the ASL. They simply don’t make it through the qualifiers.

Starcraft 1 has been released in 1998. I did mention that the first games I’ve played were from 1998. And Starcraft 2 is from 2010. They’re both very old at this point. And still going on strong. I watch a Starcraft game every day, whether that’d be a pro match, or a world tournament match. Starcraft 1′s tournament, the ASL, is going very strong, delivering tons of amazing games. That game hadn’t had a balance update since like 2000, and the meta is still changing. ... Annoyingly, because I’m watching the AfreecaTV Star League (ASL), Youtube sometimes recommends me the top 25 American Sign Language (ASL) videos.

And I did mention in the “Get to Know Your Buddies” post, that the last series I’ve watched was GSL. Global Starcraft II League. Speaking of which...

Round of 4 tomorrow. Definitely watching that. ... Not live, since GSL happens in Korea, thus Korean time. C’mon, herO! Win 2 seasons in a row! Don’t let Maru win for the 5th time! He’s going after the G5L trophy! Stop him!

Anyways. So, what kind of hints did I litter everywhere? For one, specific references! I mention Starcraft units, upgrades, abilities, etc every now and then. In the Zelda game playthrough, Lonk finds a pair of boots? I mention the Zealot Charge upgrade from the Twilight Council (SC II), and the Leg Enhancements upgrade from the Citadel (of Adun) (SC 1). Of course, you need to know what that meant. So loose hints.

Next, Destiny. Destiny’s chapter titles are ALL mission titles from SC I and II campaign missions. I had to avoid the very specific titles, like “For Aiur!”, and there were a lot of those. SA being titled after Halo missions and sub-chapters was a lot easier.

Next, “the Legacy package”. The hell does that mean? If you look at Starcraft II’s expansions... the first one was Wings of Liberty (2010), then Heart of the Swarm (2013), and then Legacy of the Void (2015), and there’s the Nova Covert Ops (”Covert Ops”, you say?). The last three stories of mine are Eternal Legacy, For Her Heart, and The New Wings. SC II starts with “Wings”, “Heart”, and “Legacy”, in that order. My stories END with “Legacy”, “Heart”, and “Wings”, in that order. Of course, the SC II expansions are shorted to “Liberty”, “Swarm”, and “Void”, so that might have been hard to notice immediately.

Next, the Mew icon. What is that on its wrists? People have asked before and I never gave a straight answer.

Starcraft’s Protoss Psi Blades. Most commonly seen on Protoss Zealots. Which is why I refer to it as zealot blades.

Because everyone knows that the Protoss stuff is the coolest in Starcraft. Though game-wise, balance is an issue. But that’s a common RTS problem. How can Marines shoot down a Battlecruiser? In the lore, they don’t. In the games, if the Marines have +3 but the Battlecruisers don’t have armor upgrades, they melt to a decent sized ball of Marines.

And this is why that crossover story idea didn’t get anywhere. If a Protoss Mothership appears in orbit above a planet, it’s going to fire its purifier beam, and the planet will be incinerated. How do I write a story about a handful of PEOPLE while that’s happening? Though it would’ve been interesting to write having a single Protoss Zealot helping the main cast through a Zerg invasion, who then later get killed, and the Protoss armor warps away the occupant upon taking fatal damage. And the warrior then comes back inside a Dragoon shell to fight once more.

There’s a specific chapter in Destiny where... “I” appear. Lots of Protoss stuff there, starting with the ability Recall, Stasis, has Zealot Psi Blades, Charge boots, tinkering with a Vortex cannon, has a drone that seems awfully like a miniature Protoss Warp Prism, seems to have Observers scattered around for surveillance, etc.

And note how many times I used the words “warp”, “stasis”, and “recall” in my posts and stories. Whenever something is teleported, I say it’s been “warped away”, or “recalled”. If something’s locked down, it’s in stasis.

Look at the icon for the story that I don’t like talking about. What is Mew’s silhouette carrying? Looks like twin green reaper scythes.

Protoss Dark Templar’s Warp Blades, that’s what. And since Dark Templar are cloaked and thus invisible... it fits how the silhouette is barely visible.

These are all Protoss stuff though! Starcraft has three races. Human Terrans, high-tech Protoss, and swarming Zerg. ... I’m a Protoss main in both SC I and II. But I do mention other races’ abilities from time to time.

In Destiny, I refer to “burrow charge” a lot. That is a Zerg Ultralisk ability that was scrapped given how stupidly powerful that was.

I do remember mentioning “stimpack” or “stims” from time to time. Terran ability. Marines take a quick stim to move and shoot faster somehow. ... I think stimmed Marines have the highest DPS in the game. So you just make Barracks, make Marines, and keep doing that to win. ... Until you run into splash damage like Protoss Colossus or Psionic Storm, Zerg Lurkers or Banelings... and then you complain about balance on the forums like all Terran players.
