Remember #ihavethisthingwithfloors ? I still remember all the time I spent as a young and enthusiastic photographer, seeking out beautiful tiles and snapping photos of myself standing on them. It seems so silly, in retrospect, but at the time, I loved it, and there’s no reason to denigrate things that bring us joy, no matter how silly they may be. What I actually have a thing for is doors, not floors. Every door is a possibility, and Europeans seem to understand that in a different way than North Americans. European doors make a statement - sometimes about what hides behind them, sometimes just a statement for the sake of making one, because a beautiful door is as worthy of appreciation as anything else lovely. The doors on the Banque Nationale de Grèce in Athens are among the moment elegant, and imposing, that I’ve ever seen in person. They dwarf the short set of stairs that leads up to them, making a statement about their importance and the importance of what they conceal. I’ve never actually been inside the bank, or even seen these doors open.
