FULL BIOGRAPHY

the hwang family were as ordinary as any family could be without the knowledge of magic existing in the world. they would have continued on in their cocooned world of normalcy for years to come, years turning to decades of time spent in brighton without the faintest clue regarding the whispers of magic around. that is until the birth of micah hwang; born into the world on the stormiest evanescent day in january, which would prove symbolic of his parents' attitude toward him as he grew into adolescence.

born as the second son of the family with a little sister added to the mix not long after, it was silent observation to tell who his parents' favorites were — silas was his father's for sharing his wife's smile while also being the beacon shining toward a promising future expected of all hwang men, while emily was his mother's for the sole reason of always wanting a daughter. which left micah in the middle where he always was, not quite an outsider in his own family but oftentimes feeling as though he had to put more effort in for an ounce of attention compared to what was given to his siblings. something that was hard to begin with when his father was an in-demand cardiothoracic surgeon who spent more time on the train to london than at home with his family, and his mother an illustrator on contract at one of the popular publishing houses in england.

micah got on well with his siblings just fine, unable to fault them for the attention they received. even so, jealousy and resentment oftentimes bubbled up with each comparison made by father on why micah wouldn't be more like silas — silas the golden boy, silas the soon-to-be oxford graduate, silas the next hwang in line to earn an m.d. it didn't seem to matter that if one were to look closely at their marks that micah's grades outperformed his brother's. eventually micah learned that silence was better than answering back in his own defense, finding the berating of his father not worth the trouble. that is until the late arrival of micah's magic on his twelfth birthday where a talk with his parents soon transitioned into an argument, causing micah to unintentionally transform his father into a polecat. it was his mother's screaming that alerted their neighbors, who happened to be fellow wix and were able to turn his father back. it was that night micah and his family learned of his magic and the wix community.

while relieved at the prospect of having somewhere he truly belonged, it was this revelation that gave plausible reason for his parents to view him as the black sheep of the family. when it came time to ship him off to thiudreiks with an accelerated course load to catch up on what he's missed, there were no tears from anyone other than emily. micah's magical education came with the pretense by his father that it would be such until micah gained control over his skills and once that was completed, it was expected of him to drop the wix community and continue on at oxford like all hwang men before him. it was a medical degree that his father valued, expecting nothing less from micah despite micah not being ready to give up a world where he was welcomed with open arms. the idea of learning this brand new world was thrilling, more enjoyable than pursuing the boring life written out for him by his parents. it's while at thiudreiks that micah's relationship with his brother begins to crumble, their letters becoming more and more sparse as the years progress, before silas falls into his own silent resentment toward micah for not being the one chosen for magic.

following his graduation at thiudreiks, micah is strong-armed by his father into enrolling at oxford to add another hwang boy into the medical program. it's a miserable three years for micah because for as much as he earns high marks, it's not a subject he's passionate about and he's mentally hanging on by a thread. it isn't until one christmas break where micah is nursing his wounded heart that he comes across his neighbor while getting the mail. he's invited inside with the promise of hot chocolate and it's under their assumption that micah is studying at aurelius. micah makes the choice to open up about his frustrations ranging from oxford, to his father wanting him to turn his back on his magic, and everything in-between. that night is a turning point for micah as he talks to his neighbor, a kindly older man who studies magical artifacts for a living. it's with his encouragement that micah drops out of his medical program and applies to aurelius and is accepted into the upcoming term. he soon moves to be closer to the underground magical community in london where he picks up a cafe barista job to earn money for school supplies, while couch hopping until the following september.

aurelius is a new chapter for micah, who is still getting used to living for himself and fully being on his own now that his family has cut off all contact. he still receives letters from emily when she's able to smuggle them out to him and for as infrequent as they are, he treasure each letter that he gets. micah chose to double specialize in magical history and alchemy, unable to choose between two subjects that hold his interest so intensely. due to his upbringing, micah views himself as behind in terms of knowledge and constantly tries to remedy that by studying as much as he can of everything to prove himself. true to the ravenclaw traits, micah is incredibly bright and dedicated to earning his spot in the wix community. as a result, he may come off as reserved due to his soft-spoken nature and observational eye. it stems from his time at home where he would avoid conflict at all costs, but micah is trying to ease himself out of such a mindset with his classmates hardly being similar to his parents. micah is beginning to learn how to have a backbone of his own and do things for himself. now that he only really has his sister left, micah reckons his time at aurelius is where he'll build his new family.
