Something I find absolutely fascinating is how Orpheus and Alice actually alternate between playing the roles of Orpheus and Eurydice.
We meet Orpheus in his namesake's role - a detective revisiting the place of his past, rediscovering his memories - venturing into the underworld to find what he's lost.
As we learn more about him, he seems to be more and more of the "Orpheus" - looking for his Eurydice in Memory, the fact that it's implied in the Memory Pages that he started everything for Alice - to try and get her out of the asylum when he was denied the right to adopt her. The fact that he loses sight of Alice, loses her as he loses himself in his reconstruction of "paradise" to the point where he might not even recognize her when she arrives at the manor.
But Alice is also looking for him. She returns to her place of memory, to the underworld, looking for him. Again, the Memory Pages tell us a lot - that once she knows he's here, she wants to save him. That she's willing to do anything for it. That they lose each other, in the end.
In mythology, Orpheus is a musician. The game makes a point that our Orpheus likes music, but he claims he isn't any good at playing it himself - Alice, however, is.
"Don't look back" and "Face it, and it'll all be over" - they seem like opposites, but they're two sides of the same coin. Because Orpheus does look back, he *keeps* looking back, and so does Alice. "Don't look back" is a warning that always goes ignored. In the new tutorial cutscenes, we see Alice able to leave, but when she hears Orpheus's voice, she *looks back.* Neither can leave the other behind in the underworld.

Okay, so I am watching all the detective Orpheus stuff and different things are standing out to me and the most prominent thing that I probably should have realized forever ago but
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
almost every time Alice's mom is shown in trailers and such she has THOSE SIMILAR SHAPED WINGS AS MISS NIGHTINGALE (the only time you don't see her with the wings on her shoulders is when Orpheus is telling the story and self inserting himself in Alice's place.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
NOW
every time Orpheus thinks back on Alice he views her as TWO people
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The only time he sees Little Girl alone is after this scene in the Little Girl Trailer:
Tumblr media
then little girl is alone and trapped
Tumblr media Tumblr media
being referred to as 'My Nightingale' and "HIS' unfailing bait" and she is a bird that is caged just like Miss Nightingale, she ain't going much of anywhere in that cage petticoat
Tumblr media
maybe she could shuffle along but I dunno, maybe portals around the manor lol I don't knowww
ANYWAYS back to the point:
Detective Orpheus is obviously unhinged as heck but he refers to Alice as the 'little girl with her mother' Then I saw somewhere that Miss Nightingale 'visits him' 'haunts him' (so that got me thinking that is where the 'mom alice' went/became in his mind and she haunts him in a way) but I couldn't find it anywhere to see for myself so I am throwing that out until there is some way to see for sure.
but she appears to him as much as little girl does, both guiding and helping people
but back to my REAL POINT:
He sees Little Girl, as the Alice he knew. and This grown up lady that he calls her 'Mom', in place of present Alice
So Orpheus's psycho brain seeing this lady as the mom of little girl and his brain starts piecing together this woman that is a mixture of: -present Alice(who is actually standing there in front of him), -with her actual mother(with her iconic feathers), -and the nightingale The only three things he remembers at first and that his alter ego wants captured to use as BAIT likely to weaken the main orpheus ego so he gain take control again like before the da capo game takes place and his evil plottings. because the nightingale/Alice is his weakness
goodness gracious this is a mess, whenever I am diggin into Orpheus stuff and how he thinks its all so messy LOL
but I made this its own post cause its more Miss Nightingale centered
now to finish that Detective Orpheus ask that inspired all this 👀

Lucky being an assistant to the Detective is so funny if he ever meets Orpheus
Because wow....bro was insufferable when he was young 😭😭😭 he cant believe he grows up to be the Detective
Meanwhile Orpheus is confused because?? Lucky somehow knows things about him even though theyve never properly interacted. What the fuck do you mean you know that i fell from a tree at the age of 5 because my kite got stuck.

Orpheus is quite tragic
I mean, I'm probably pointing out the obvious, but I'm new to IDV and I wanted to write out my thoughts.
His tragedy is more than just the story of "Orpheus and Eurydice", reading Burk's letters and the clues seen in the manor, his story is basically this:
He was the son of two employees working for the DeRoss family. He was treated as part of the DeRoss family and part of it was because they wanted to nurture his talent for writing. His real parents instead used him to steal from the DeRoss family and gain access to the manor which led to their gruesome end. It's really no wonder he saw the DeRoss couple as his own parents, they probably showed him love more than his own parents.
It doesn't really end there as you realize that Orpheus has never really had an identity of his own. He's had roles to play by his parents, by his publicist, and the powers behind the manor games. His current role is the Detective.
The real tragedy and horror here is that Orpheus truly has no identity of his own.
