what’s your opinion on monstrous transformations (both fast and slow), and also more controversially what do you think about having monsters/nonhuman characters serve as minority allegory (as opposed to society’s hate for them being being an allegory)

ohhh hold on this is a rly good question i think abt a Lot actually.

ok getting the first bit out of the way, love a good monstrous transformation. fast, slow, its all good. i personally like gradual slow shifts the most but its a situational thing. transformation is one of those things that like just always has to be symbolic. even more than the degree to which Everything is symbolic ya know. so like context rly matters when it comes to how to invoke it most effectively.

MOVING ON

i think from the phrasing of the ask ur looking for something more along the lines of like. for example shapeshifters as representation of nonbinary people or aliens as representation of different cultures rather than like monsters vs humans as allegory for racism. but im also not sure you can meaningfully separate the two! the latter i think is more overused so it like registers more as an immediate red flag, but its like. if the aliens from avatar werent being violently invaded by humans it wouldnt make like their reskinned stereotypical indigeneity anymore tolerable i dont think.

which isnt to say i think every story that draws connections between fantastical fictional species and real world people are inherently bad. i dont really think theres any trope that i believe cant be handled well by anyone under any circumstance. the super easy fix to bad rep via monster or fantasy creature characters is basically just have actual humans who also represent those same identities and communities and experiences so that the audience isnt drawn to connect the traits of any one group with your fictional species.

the harder fix is to like seriously analyze why you want this character to be a monster and what that says about them and what that says about you and your own experiences and biases and what you actually want to communicate with the inclusion of this character. and when applicable hire a sensitivity reader. its kinda crazy how many pieces of media seem to prefer half-assing the hard way over just doing the easy thing and not assigning the status of token minority to a literal monster.

of course once again all of this is ya know circumstantial. im speaking to like my own experiences and the things ive observed. and its weird too! bc im also speaking as someone who like is trans and nonbinary and thinks of myself and my gender expression as inherently intertwined with monstrosity. and as someone who is autistic and thinks of myself as a changeling. and as someone who is a fat person who represents themself with a pig themed sona. if i talk abt cringeass hollywood blockbusters engaging in High Fantasy Racism i feel like to be fair i kinda have to talk about independent own-voices creators who write stories and make art about their own identities in the lovely language of monstrosity. theres not rly a way to draw a hard line around the former without the risk of catching some of the latter.

so umm as usual i dont rly have a snappy all encompassing answer for how i feel abt this kind of characterization. im simply too much of a Nuance Enjoyer. i do i guess think this is something that generally turns out better when it is someone making art about their own experiences, but also unless i believe minority artists are a monolith, which i dont, i need to accept that artists will inevitably make stuff that is beautiful and resonant to some people and totally repugnant and offensive to others, and that both of those responses can be like totally justified and correct. thats art babey!

anyway slight digression but i think any case where a character feels more like an allegory than a fully fleshed u know Character is gonna flop for me no matter how relatable it is. tbqh, id rather more ppl try and fail to make beautiful grotesque frightening sensually moving monsters out of their lived experiences and their empathetic connections with others than succeed at creating bland toothless universally approachable Good Rep tm. if u know u know. if u feel me u feel me. that is all.

i am going to analyze my rings to figure out their meanings & what powers they give me when i wear them (-_-｡)

silas: i stole this ring, it has five four petal flowers engraved on it. 5 is a number of purity & perfection, 4 is a number of stability. there are many 4 petal flowers & i can’t identify these, but as a whole 4 petal flowers symbolize wholeness, unity & beauty. it is named after my cat silas who is so beautiful & mischievous. silas is a name of latin origin & means essentially “of the forest”. its biblical connotations mean 3 or the 3rd. 3 has many different meanings, but those that come to mind are unity or “all”, resemblant of the triad.

osiris: i also stole this ring -__- it is a simple sterling silver band. i wear both silas & osiris on my left hand ring finger, which typically symbolizes marriage or engagement. they are both sterling silver, which is derivative of original silver or whatever which symbolizes wealth bc precious metal but also has lunar connotations, which are very feminine. osiris is the egyptian god of the underworld & agricultural fertility, he acts as a judge to the dead. he is killed by his brother seth, or set, the god of disorder. the myth has its share of incest & betrayal, but the most prevalent themes are death, theafterlife & the conflict between order & disorder

daedalus: i think this dude is sick as fuck for building the labyrinth id like to pick his brain im not gonna explain the myth bc i dont want to. this ring was my mothers, im not sure what the stone is but the colors remind me of blood & rust & ga red clay. it is an empty locket, i often fidgit with the little clasp. it is the largest ring that i own, i used to pretend it was a vampires ring when i was younger. there is no statement made by wearing a ring on ur left middle finger, but this site says since it is the largest finger of the hand it can symbolize power & responsibility, which i like. this ring grounds me the most, it feels very nice to rub my fingers across. ty daedalus

woodring: this is also my mothers, it is a celtic design, and i am not sure exactly which knot it is but i belive it is either a sailors knot or a love knot. the sailors knot symbolizes an unbreakable bond, and a love knot is meant to be shared between two people. it was made in silver by one of her friends. woodring is named after jim woodring, a cartoonist i really admire. his pieces are whimsical & disorienting & grimm. i love his mind. the pointer finger symbolizes confidence and authority/leadership.

narcissus: i named narcissus bc i really like the name but i can’t use it for myself. i thought it was fitting bc i am overly self absorbed & in both a relentless self hatred way & a could stare at my features for hours way. it was given to me by my friend who i have always considered to be a little magical. we have a lot of history together & she had convinced me she had powers when i was younger, but also little things have happened that reinforce it now. the stone is probably amber or glass, the orange feels more “happy” than the previous one. thumb rings are associated w masculinity & willpower.

clo: clo is named after a character i made when i was 12 she was pretty badass & i had forgotten about her entirely until i was thinking of names for my rings. this ring was given to me by a friend around a month ago. it is made of collage paper and resin, on the inside there are words that read “gradually crumbled my imagination.” i have wondered why they chose these words for me. does it seem like my imagination is deteriorating? this ring is mostly pale greens with gold ink & a pair of eyes to watch me. she is like a witness for everything that i do. beside the eyes there is a hand holding three swords, in tarot this symbolizes intense sorrow. the greens are pleasant and calming, but paired with the eyes they evoke mystery/secrecy to me.

lyra: this was my mothers spoon ring that she used to wear in college. she is named lyra after the protagonist of the golden compass trilogy, i really loved those books when i was younger. lyra is a greek name referring to the constellation of the lyre of orpheus, i will not talk abt all of the stars in lyre bc i do not want to do the research rn -__-. i hate to be a freak but spoons are certainly the most feminine cutlery this is basic shape analysis. i think that the rings on my left hand are more masculine & those on my right more feminine.

icarus: u know why this one is named icarus. it was one of my favorite stories when i was younger. the winged skull is symbolic of the transformative nature of death, it is a reminder of life’s impermanence. the wings evoke ascension&i am not religious but i am enamored with flight. i think remedios would also have been a good name for this ring, i may change it at some point. read 100 years of solitude. i have not fully decided what i believe will happen when we die.

noah: i wanted to name myself noah for awhile but it’s my friends older brothers name so i decided not to. noah means comfort or the wanderer. it is a very pretty ring, the stone winks blue in the light & it just felt right to give it a more masculine name. i like how soft it sounds to say.

leona: leona is my mothers claddagh, an irish symbol meaning friendship, loyalty and love. i wear it with the heart facing inwards which means my heart is closed or i’m in a relationship, but i don’t do this to adhere to symbolism i just do it bc i like to look at it this way. leona is the main character of one of my favorite webcomics from years ago called prague race which i’m not even really sure exists anymore. the creatures are incredible. the name leona is a feminine form of lion. i like the way these three look stacked together.

anura: also my mothers, anura is silver and round. definitely more feminine, my friend says it reminds them of a sunflower. anura is the order of amphibians classifying frogs & toads... i chose it because i love those creatures & it is a very pretty word. i am tired now & i haven’t even deciphered what powers they give me. that is fine. gn

‪Ok so on twitter I said that I wasn’t gonna write this bc I didn’t wanna be called a KH3 apologist but then my friends were like “you’re a kh3 apologist anyways just do it” so I did it. I love KH and theorizing and analyzing everything and it’s great, but also it’s 2 am, and also Nomura really needs to consider writing these things down somewhere before releasing these games. Also stop recycling villains, dammit.

‪Ok I’m too lazy to go on the wiki or something and re read these but on the very first KH (or maybe it was in the Secret Ansem Reports in KH2...?? ANYWAYS IN ONE OF THOSE) it is stated that, according to the metaphysics of the Kh universe, a person is made up of a body, a heart‬, ‪and a soul. Bc the main lore of kh doesn’t mention it much not many players seem to remember or know what the “soul” is, especially since it’s clearly not supposed to be the same thing that westerners think of as a soul (that would be a heart in KH-metaphysics)‬.

‪So all we ever get in the series is people losing their hearts, which is synonymous to someone going fucking catatonic and emotionless bc they don’t have a soul (think Kairi in KH1), or just overall disappear bc of darkness related hijinks that cause complications.‬

‪Like, Kairi in KH1 was alive, y’all. She had a breathing pattern and open eyes and everything, she just didn’t have a heart. She’s the only example we have of this (unless you want me to include Aurora in BBS lol), because she’s the only one whose body wouldn’t react to darkness related hijinks (Darkness, as you all know, is quite annoying).‬ This means that, clearly, not having a heart doesn’t mean you’re a corpse. It’s probably more like you going in a coma. Nobodies in Org XIII aren’t walking corpses. They’re just ppl without a soul. (AKA a heart). They’re like, psychopaths? Sam in that one season of Supernatural? you know, just a bunch of ppl that don’t have to deal with pesty issues like guilt or ethics.

(If you’re wondering why Kairi’s catatonic body in KH1 isn’t a Nobody it’s bc Nobodies are dependent on Darkness. Only hearts that have turned to heartless (darkness) create Nobodies, and Nobodies are born with the ability to open dark corridors and control heartless and do whatever they want. Like, they technically have access to both light and dark (and. Void? I guess?) but they’re very obviously leaning more towards the side of darkness. Not that they’re inherently dark creatures, but that they are just yet another life form in KH that owes its existence to Darkness. Kairi, as we all will never forget, has no darkness bothering her and complicating her life. Sora’s the one that had enough darkness and body and soul to spare to create two nobodies out of thin air. What the fuck dude.)

Of course if you played DDD you’d be like “uh, but Xemnas said that Nobodies can grow hearts uhhh” and id be like yeah he did and it makes a lot of sense especially if you had watched/Played Re: Coded and payed attention to the juicy lore bits instead of the main plot like I’ve been saying forever. However unimportant the plot is, Re: Coded’s storyline literally exists to say that anything with a Body and a (what KH calls a) Soul (Like, say, the person made out of data that you’re playing as throughout the game) has the ability to grow a heart and become a person. The entirety of Jiminy’s Journal becomes a world a la Winnie the Pooh, obtaining its own heart. Like, it’s a book and it was made and it’s kind of fake but it developed its own sense of self, and developed a heart. Like, it was literally pointed out to us. Data Sora lives beyond his programming (just like, hey, Tron.) bc he developed a sense of self. A personality. A heart. He even makes his own Keyblade, that’s how much heart he mad. With a lesson like that being thrown at us, why wouldn’t the Organization XIII Nobodies eventually be able to develop their own sense of self? To go beyond what they thought their “original” selves were like, and become able to feel? Not to say they do, mind you. I think a lot of them, or all of them, like Axel in the beginning of Days, were so stuck on what they thought their original self was like that they were just following through the motions and doing what a data program would consider its “programming”. Axel only began to grow a heart once he stopped trying to be Saïx’s friend, and started to go beyond what his memories were telling him he should act like and do what he felt like he needed to act like.

Anyways now at this point you’re probably like, “what does this have to do with Villains in KH always coming back…” and I’m gonna get to that jeez hold on a minute, I just felt like I needed to explain what a heart was for this to be clearer to people. What are the functions of a heart, and what it ultimately serves. I needed to explain this, because losing a Heart does not mean you are dead, losing your Soul does.

The Soul in KH should probably be referred to as Spirit, as I think it reflects the idea better, while keeping basically the same word. (Unfortunately we already have things called Spirits in KH, and they’re adorable darkness creatures, so.) It’s supposed to be the energy that makes something move. It’s the Will to Live. The fact that the soul seems to be synonymous with will is important, bc only people with a “Strong Will”, that become heartless, create Nobodies. The Will in this case is clearly the energy source that provides a body with sustenance. With life. Pinocchio was given a soul by the blue fairy so he could move (the heart, I think, he made himself due to Geppetto's own feelings). The love of children give the toys in Toy Story a will to protect, love, and be played with. Terra’s will was so damn strong, it reanimated his armor. Terra’s Will to live makes his armor move on its own. Look, it’s even called The Lingering Will. What does this mean? That only a body and a heart that has lost its soul, that loses its energy source (its lifestream, I suppose) undeniably dies.

No one, absolutely no one in KH, has lots their soul. Ok, not true, obviously there are some exceptions, particularly regarding the Disney villains, but I’m talking abt the story original characters that Nomura loves to recycle so much. No one has lost it bc pretty much almost no one we fight is ever a complete human being. They’re always missing vital parts of themselves. Ansem the Seeker of Darkness was humanoid Heart walking around. Xemnas and the Organization were a few bodies and souls walking around with maybe a mini heart or two. Vanitas is literally the most incomplete being I can think of. He’s literally half a heart, half a body, and half a soul. The dude is a mess. Master Xehanort… MX is clearly using loopholes and luck to keep himself surviving this long. By now, he’s made a complete and utter mess of Terra, who got literally split into 3 entities for 10 years, while he himself is really only a floating heart and a soul ruining everything. Young Xehanort is a complete being that should probably watch out for decapitation or something, but we can certainly rule out that Riku would kill him because I mean. Y’all have met Riku, right? Also he’s just obviously alive lmao.

The fact that these beings are incomplete is important bc the keyblade, our weapon of choice, is a mysterious artifact that serves very specific functions. It opens and locks anything, specifically the hearts to a world and the pathways that lead to other worlds. It seems to exist to bring balance and stability to… anywhere it’s at, really. It’s a magical item with magical intentions. Now, I’m not gonna sit here and say what I’m about to say as if it’s proven fact that I read in an interview or deduced myself or something, I will admit that my next point is in theoretical territory, but that doesn’t make it any less likely or probable. And that is that the Keyblade can not kill people. That is to say, it can not kill a soul. It can only break apart, or reunite parts of a person, but not destroy them. “Killing” heartless restores them to their original state: a heart, and killing nobodies does the same. Xehanort and Sora stabbed themselves to get their hearts out of their bodies and created heartless and nobodies in the process. It’s like the laws of thermodynamics or something. It seems to me that that is the nature of a keyblade.

So, inclusion, nobody has died in KH. The end. This is unnecessarily long but I get like that sometimes. There is one last point that I have to address but I might do that tomorrow, if anyone gives a shit by then. Good night!
