Anyway, today’s song of the day is Oh Woman, Oh Why. I’m just so fascinated by Paul’s choice of. shooting a gun as a sound effect. I mean sure, the lyrics mention a gun, but just. recording gunshots in the track. just like that. Truly insane behavior. And the whole thing is just such a banger in itself. My god. And also that picture of him holding the gun, with the headphones. What insanity. The whole album is just such pure unfiltered art and yeah I’m still so BAFFLED that it didn’t climb every chart worldwide and stayed there at least for months.

#like. just. the shock of it all #there’s something about Taylor where her experience of life is so ….. brutal #like I don’t know how else to say it but it just is. life is not easy on her it is always ready to CLOBBER her #and in a way she’s not easy on life. there’s some kind of magnets/opposite poles stuff where she’s just always drawn to the worst things #to feeling them and experiencing them and almost ??? creating them #like I don’t mean to overstate it. and I know she has a family who loves her (thank GOD) #and also she’s very practical and industrious about creating this very Instagram worthy life full of Fine Things and a Fun Time #and of course all the resources in the world at her disposal to create all the trappings of it #whether it’s a celebrity Fourth of July party or the eras tour #and she’ll do it and love it. but as all the best critics know and point out the most fascinating thing about Taylor is always the music #and it’s where all the weirdness and stubbornness and difficulties of her life. her a c t u a l longings her actual fears #her actual terrible awful experiences that she charges headlong down the paths of #is set free! and it’s breathtaking in the most shocking way #like falling through the ice! I always say the first thing that always hits me about a Taylor album is the bitterness #just this blast in the face. and her music is so gentle! in so many ways #and the packaging is so appealing and her voice is so soft and expressive and there is none of that weird experimentation #even musically (remember when she shut down imogen heap for putting a minor chord in clean she was like absolutely not. #such a good album it is Insane that like. you never really see it talked about outside of certain spaces #and even then it was originally derided for being much less heavy than its predecessors #such a smart album lyrically and even in just like certain songs like peacock skeleton with crooked feathers #which btw is my go-to song to introduce people 2 them #for obvious reasons. the way the vocals play off each other #the keyboard #aforementioned lyrics because man they’re good at writing political lyrics that are simultaneously very pointed and relevant to this day #and also just plain fun. the way they word stuff rolls off the tongue very well #which I suppose is very much in part to Whitney being a very literary guy from what I’ve read up about him #SPEAKING OF!!!!! Something HYSTERICALLY funny to me about the literal opening lines of the album being Joe’s silence and calm and Taylor both resting in it but also about to midnight chatter/complain/vent/reminisce/sob for the next 44 minutes

#you can feel him as a place of rest for Taylor #all that not marrying nonsense. like again. Taylor can say what she needs to say as she wrestled with old wounds and crushing expectations #etc. #YOU need to marry her. period. full stop. #it will not be enough for her until/if you do #(I hope you have already and we don’t know but yeah.) #like. it’s literally your job Joseph #okay I’m going to stop talking about this specific aspect of it but yeah. #Taylor’s wounds. the weight of things. her fragile bitter heart #like. you as a calm and reserved British actor with self-possession etc. have literally one job #and it is NOT your acting job #anyway overall I love his presence on the album. somehow more revealing than ever #not his personality in itself but flashes of it I guess. and mostly what he means for Taylor #this anchor of stability that has unlocked (honestly) her potential to be her most insane self #in the BEST way #she doesn’t have to hold back #the OLDER Taylor gets the more I am astonished to find how much agonizing restraint there was in those early albums #of course not all of her vocabulary and darkness and wounds (or loves) were as developed now #but there is this sense that she was keeping herself in such check #in order to be likeable #the fascinating power was still there but the range of her sheer personaltiy #the bitterness the rancor the need for peace even the softness #their deep twisted complicated roots were mostly hidden and disguised #and time reveals them #(though also the funny thing about a taylor album is that it wears sweeter with time) #until I can almost hear no bitterness #but at first that’s ALL I hear
