the day literally everyone survived july 4th, 2007 on mystery flesh pit national park
on july 4th 2023, roblox players were introduced to an update on the mystery flesh pit national park exploration game: a 4th of july celebration, with fireworks, american paraphernalia and a fetch quest that required doing manual labour for the part, gave out an unique badge, and referred to 'unusual tremors', setting the day of the update to july 4th 2007!
excitedly, a server of 50 players all gathered in the lower visitor center, waiting for the power to go out for mere 45 seconds (and the mayhem that would happen afterwards) at 9:51pm gmt-5. player morale was at an all time high (with some having admitted to waiting 6 hours in game just so they could experience the incident):
Tumblr media
when the clock reached the destined hour, everybody cheered, fireworks ablazing, waiting for disaster to strike... but as the time soon changed to 9:52pm, all soon realized that they had been waiting >30 minutes for absolutely nothing: the fetch quest they'd so excitedly gone on, one that set the players out to fix faulty water drainage pipes... retconned the biggest event in the park's lore. and they contributed to it
a mass exodus of players soon transpired, most posting their discontent on the group wall. some, disappointed with the lack of mass deaths, headed to ape's escape and jumped in unexplored areas in order to be killed by abyssal copepods: regardless, all survived july 4th, 2007. but at what cost????

Swift-mas 🎄 in July 💥
When I think about Taylor Swift and I think about holidays, the two that spring to mind first are Christmas and Independence Day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This post (and future ones added to it) will be an ongoing analysis on Taylor’s references to both holidays and how they play a role in her life and her public image as a celebrity. I’ll also dive into various Easter eggs from interviews and music videos and of course from her lyrics.
For some context this is building off a recent post by @daylicate related to religion, New Age Deceit and Jesus Christ.
https://daylicate.tumblr.com/post/623272154372374528/from-new-age-deceit-to-jesus-boy-i-did-not
To begin, what do we know about Taylor Swift’s religious upbringing?
For me personally, not much. So I did some digging and found myself listening - really listening - to her Christmas album original songs for the first time.
The album is a classic for longtime Swifties but unknown to many after its initial release in 2007.

💫 🎄
See the lyrics below and you’ll understand why it stuck out to me after reading the above post .
✨ Christmas Must Mean Something More ✨
SONG LYRICS -> https://youtu.be/9HHIGzI6Hjg
Tumblr media
What if ribbons and bows didn't mean a thing
Would the song still survive without five golden rings
Would you still wanna kiss without mistletoe
What would happen if God never let it snow ❄️
What would happen if Christmas carols told a lie
Tell me what would you find
You'd see that today holds something special
Something holy, not superficial 🎁 ✨🙏
So here's to the birthday boy who saved our lives
It's something we all try to ignore
And put a wreath up on your door
So here's something you should know that is for sure
Christmas must be something more ✨
What if angels did not pay attention to 👼
All the things that we wished they would always do
What if happiness came in a cardboard box 📦
Then I think there is something we all forgot 🌎
What would happen if presents all went away 🎁
Tell me what would you find
Tumblr media
We get so caught up in all of it
Business and relationships
Hundred mile an hour lives
And it's this time of year and everybody's here
It seems the last thing on your mind
Is that the day holds something special
Something holy, not superficial
So here's to Jesus Christ who saved our lives
It's something we all try to ignore and put a wreath up on your door
But here's something you should know that is for sure, Christmas must be something - Christmas must be something more
There's gotta be more...

2014 leads us to ...
Taylor Swift - Christmas Angel 👼
Taylor Swift being the most giving celebrity to her fans EVER. Seriously being a Christmas giving angel 😇 🎁 ❄️

Moving on to...
2019 🎄 Christmas Returns
Tumblr media
As any true Swiftie knows, Taylor grew up on a Christmas Tree Farm in PA before moving to Nashville to pursue her Country Star dreams.
Before getting too much into the song, Taylor already was leaving hints of her return to Christmas music in her music videos.
ME! 🎄

LOVER 🎄
Tumblr media
Also featured in the Lover music video ✨ footage from 4th of July, 2016 celebrations 💥
Tumblr media
I’ll be diving more into -> 🎇 Independence Day in a future post.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lover also features the house in the snow globe and I can go into a full other post analyzing that - yes the Kaylor references - but also the doll house aspect of it all. Moving back to the Christmas Tree Farm 🎄
youtube
-> https://youtu.be/mN3rDTAdM2o
Sample of LYRICS:
My winter nights are taken up by static
Stress, and holiday shopping traffic
But I close my eyes, and I'm somewhere else
Just like magic ✨
In my heart is a Christmas tree farm 🏡 ❤️🎄
Where the people would come
To dance under sparkling lights ✨ 💃
Bundled up in their mittens and coats
And the cider would flow
And I just wanna be there tonight
Sweet dreams of holly and ribbon 🎁
Mistakes are forgiven
And everything is icy and blue ❄️
And you would be there too
Under the mistletoe 🎄
Watching the fire glow 🔥
And telling me, "I love you"
Just being in your arms 🤗
Takes me back to that little farm 🌲
Where every wish comes true 💫
In my heart is a Christmas tree farm 🏡 ❤️ 🎄
There's a light in the barn 💡
We'd run inside out from the cold 🥶
In the town, kids are dreaming of sleighs 🛷
And they're warm and they're safe
They wake to see a blanket of snow ❄️ ⛄️
————
And when I'm feeling alone
You remind me of home 🏡 🎄
Oh baby, baby, Merry Christmas
And when the world isn't fair
I’ll pretend that we're there
Baby, baby, Merry Christmas
Oh baby, baby, Merry Christmas
May your every wish come true 🎄
I love you ❤️
——
In conclusion for this first post - both Christmas songs are about people getting consumed with life and losing sight of the true meaning of Christmas - family, loved ones, and Jesus Christ (full disclosure- I’m Jewish, so someone with more knowledge feel free to add onto these ideas and explore further 😂)

A Very Fond Bon-Voyage to Adam Corbett
Tumblr media
Adam and Crystal (D. Machado, 2005)
Adam Corbett had played music since he was a kid, but I first saw him perform at his band’s rehearsal space in Red Bank, SC on a hot Sunday afternoon in 2003. His songs featured idiosyncratic lyrics about personified moons, mystic wolves, snakes, and surviving the wasteland with an empty tank of gas. The arrangements were simultaneously acoustic and electric. The band rocked, and featured a funky backbeat. His voice and guitar were distinct and felt authentic both to who he was and where he was from. I was immediately a fan.
Tumblr media
Guitar Show (J. Labbé, 2005)
A few years of shared bills later, Adam joined up with my band at the time, Guitar Show, on bass guitar. Together we released an EP and a 16-track album while Adam continued to write and perform under a few equally engaging projects ranging from lofi folk as “Creature the Preacher” to prog as “The Ghost of FDR”—I’ve never known anyone who can so effortlessly re-imagine and rearrange songs and musical ideas as Adam.

Guitar Show in NYC (2007)
In 2007, burnt out on 90s-inspired rock and autobiographical songs that somehow felt detached from who I was and where I was from, Adam seemed like the perfect person to hear my pitch for The Restoration, a band seeking to make regionally-inspired music. We rehearsed early songs in my apartment’s living room with fellow founding members Lauren Garner, Sharon Gnanashekar, and Eddie Lord until playing our first shows in 2008. We released an EP in 2009, our first album in 2010, followed by another in 2012, a second EP in 2015, and a full-length, West, arriving October 2019.

Adam has given The Restoration his incredible talents through distinctive arrangements on bass and percussion, and the composition of some of our favorite songs: “Reverend Samuel Harper” and “The Werewolf of Balentine,” along with a batch of songs about the Harper character that formed a major story arc in the Constance musical produced by Columbia, SC’s Trustus Theatre.
Tumblr media
Paul Kaufman as Rev. Samuel Harper w/ ensemble in Trustus Theatre’s Constance musical (B. Martin, 2018)
During his time with The Restoration Adam also released an EP of lush, upbeat folk rock under his name, and performed and recorded electronic indie-pop that only he could make under the projects “Lazy A and the Green Thing,” and, later, “Husband,” a band featuring compositions and vocals by his wife, Bekah Rice Corbett.
Over a year ago, after completing his parts for The Restoration’s new album, Adam mentioned that he might want to step back from playing bass to focus on his own projects sometime in the future. After seeing us through the completion of West and performing at its Columbia, SC release party, Adam feels the time is right to make this move. With our full support, the release party on October 4th will be Adam’s last show with The Restoration. And with Adam’s full support, The Restoration will continue the promotional circuit for West, with shows planned in Washington, D.C., Burlington, VT, the SC regional area and onward.
Tumblr media
Husband: Adam and Bekah Rice Corbett (S. Sanders, 2016)
For 15 years, hundreds of shows, and 5 hours of music across 8 recording projects, Adam has lent his talents, ideas, songs, influence and rehearsal space to my music. Simultaneously he’s been and continues to be a great friend, creative inspiration, and collaborator in other mediums.
When Adam released a new solo single in July I excitedly clicked the link and loved every minute of another track only he could make. I’ve never stopped being his fan and I'm so excited to hear what he does next.

                                     Macy Alexis Barianna
December 25th, 2000 -  Age 9: Macy Alexis gets a tape recorder and casette tapes for Christmas. She can’t get the timing right, and ends up mashing songs together on accident. Eventually she started doing it on purpose, swearing she liked how they sounded. Until she got real mixing equipment, at least.
September 11th 2001 -Age 10: The entire Barianna family crowds back into their parent’s house.  The watch on the new even though they can see the smoke outside. Macy Alexis can’t remember any other time she’d seen her father that scared.
October 31st 2004 - Age 13: Macy gets her first kiss at a Halloween party, while playing spin the bottle. Superman’s kiss tastes like melted snickers and pizza grease.
April 13th, 2006- Age 14: Macy Alexis DJs a school dance for 50 bucks. She keeps taking jobs, and eventually develops a following.  The height of her career was getting to headline her own show at a club on her 18th birthday. Her experience earns her a full ride at the University of Wales.
September 2nd, 2007- Age 15:  Macy Alexis buys orange hairdye from CVS. It comes out patchy and terrible, but she keeps her hair orange for the next decade.
May 23rd, 2007 -Age 15: Sarah Winslow moves in a block away from the Barianna household, and transfers into Macy’s class. They’re dating by the end of the school year.
July 12, 2007- Age 16: Macy Alexis loses her virginity.

Her family for five years, Sarah, Ty, Laiken, and now Dustin.  It felt like a matter of time before she lost everyone again anyways.  She makes sure her last words to everybody are ‘I love you’, and writes suicide notes. She doesn’t give Dustin his. Suffering from untreated postpartum depression, Macy Alexis swallows an entire bottle of pain medication. She barely survives.

June 30th, 2017- Age 25: Macy invites Dustin to In-N-Out so she can talk about how she’s feeling. He brings it up first. They agree to take things slow. They are bad at taking things slow.
July 14th, 2017-Age 26: Dustin sleeps with Jagger, a day after having spent the last two with her for her birthday. Macy finds out because of a snapchat Jagger sends to Killian.  They aren’t technically together, but Macy is very jealous and hates thinking about it.  She is godawful at pretending it doesn’t bother her. Loses a day of recording talking to her band about how much it bothers her.
July 18th, 2017-  Age 26:  Macy bites the bullet and talks to Dustin about the situation with Jagger. The two are officially together. Not casual, not talking, not taking it slow. She thinks it’s funny that that was what it took, two weeks of talking and one odd one night stand, but she is over the moon.
August 29th, 2017- Age 26: Macy is stressed beyond reason between the album finishing recording and Julia’s terrible twos. Her anxieties get the best of her, and she and Dustin have a blow out fight. It’s the first time they say they love each other.  She thinks that’s it for their relationship, and decides against her brain that she’s not going to lose him again.
September 2nd, 2017- Age 26: Leila, the cat that Macy has had since she was six, dies. Macy shuts down, forgets to charge her phone, forgets to shower, forgets to eat. She’s like this for three days.
September 7th, 2017- Age 26: Macy finishes the initial recording of her first producer credit album, a day after a phonecall with Dustin where they made up from their fight.

Realizing Success in a Dying Town - Out With the Old
During a recent visit to the once thriving southwestern town of Tucumcari, New Mexico, located in Quay County on "Historic Route 66," I wondered how businesses were surviving there during this floundering economy, especially since the town had been sputtering towards failure for more than a decade Office cleaning fargo. The universe answered my mindful inquiry by presenting this example of how one businesswoman was making it, while an elder businessman was not.
Once named "Six Shooter Siding," Tucumcari was founded in 1901 as a railroad construction camp. The 2000 census was 11 people short of reporting a population of 6000, but the count has since declined. The town occupies 7.5 square miles. Businesses in Tucumcari that exude a level of success are rare; they are few whose windows aren't barred or boarded up. The prominent ones are banks like Wells Fargo and Everyone's Federal Credit Union. (Yes, that is the credit union's actual name). Set apart, with its clean, almost modern architecture, Mesalands Community College seems as though extraterrestrials had plopped it down one late evening unbeknownst to the local inhabitants. [But I could only logically equate such an event with Roswell, New Mexico, far to the south.]
On Main Street of Tucumcari's "downtown," the only business front that said, "successful" was Pajarito Interiors, owned and operated by Ruth Nelson, an interior decorator who (according to local news articles) earned her degree from the University of Hawaii and moved to New Mexico from Oregon several years ago. Pajarito Interiors' Santa Fe adobe-style facade was clean, its paint fresh and stucco walls free of cracks. It had obviously been recently redesigned and updated compared to the buildings, up, down and across the street that sat in sad shape, windows boarded from vandal attacks, and having been long abandoned. An emaciated, feathery carcass of some now unidentifiable medium-sized bird-of-prey lay, splayed out in a display window where the raptor had accidentally flown in and failed in its escape. There it remained, in memoriam to its long suffering; for how long was anyone's guess. The building adjacent to Pajarito Interiors, connected by a shared wall was Sands-Dosey Drugstore. It had burned a year ago. Its partially scorched-black walls remained half standing, reminiscent of a bombed-out structure from a recent war no one had heard about. Its long history destroyed in what must have been a matter of hours.
Ruth Nelson's store is stocked with high-end home furnishing and decorator items. The interior walls hold a neutral hue that complements every other color found on unique, seemingly one-of-a-kind tables, sofas, chairs, and objects de arte . The ceiling lights softly light partitions that showcase special furnishings like a fashionably high table with a pair of plush-upholstered, matching chairs. In Tucumcari, with an estimated 80% of its population living on public assistance, it was an immediate mystery as to who among the locals could afford such exquisite items.
In an interview, Ruth Nelson said she moved to Tucumcari when she found a man with whom she thought she could spend the rest of her life; that being Donald Schutte, an attorney and now former state district judge. (Having been originally appointed by the governor, Schutte had lost last November's election with his opponent winning nearly 2 votes to 1.) In local news articles, Nelson and Schutte have expressed plans to greatly improve downtown Tucumcari as they have filled key roles in the "Main Street" initiative with its mission to "bring back Tucumcari." Nelson said her business was doing okay, but there was a time when she was realizing $7,000 to $10,000 in sales per week. That number sounded suspiciously exaggerated so I investigated further to find out the secret of how a businesswoman could be so successful in what appears to be a dying town. The answer came as a surprise.
In July, 2006, Ruth bought a home furnishings business from businessman Stanley Jennings. Stanley was 81 years old and thought it a good time to consider retiring. A veteran, and retired serviceman, Stanley was born in 1925 in his family's ranch house home in Quay, New Mexico, about 17 miles south of Tucumcari. He grew up there. Stan (as his friends call him) remembers as a child having just one shirt which his mother would quickly wash every night when he got home from school. She would iron it in the morning right before he left to attend a one room school house that was located on an adjacent ranch a couple of miles away. He would walk or ride a horse to get there. As a teenager, Stan was a "soda jerk" at Sands-Dorsey Drugstore whose abandoned business location was the bombed out building, previously noted. He served in the Army Air Corp as a P-51 fighter pilot in Alaska, and was once state President of New Mexico Young Democrats, a time he was being groomed to run for a higher, future office. He attended pharmacy school in Albuquerque but quit when he got a C in one class believing that it disqualified him to graduate. He didn't understand that is was a Grade Point Average (GPA) of a C or less that would have disqualified him House cleaning service fargo. Unexpectedly, Stan's father died far too young, and left Stan's mother to cope with running a cattle ranch that was on the small side, as cattle ranches go. The ranch was encumbered with a large tax debt, as well. Stan accepted the responsibility, supporting his mother, wife and child.
Stan gave up pursuing ambitions outside of Tucumcari: the new, flourishing airline industry needed pilots, pharmacies were short-handed, and state level politics continued to beckon, but he kept busy on the home front. He was elected to the office of Quay County Assessor for several terms, continued on as a 4th generation rancher and founded a business in Tucumcari that he maintained for over 30 years. Tucumcari became home. He had married there; his only child had been born there. Janie, his wife, a school teacher who had taught for 26 years in Tucumcari, died there just short of their 50th wedding anniversary. Although now remarried, Stan has a burial place reserved beside Janie's "place of rest." He was an active member and held offices in the Kiwanis Club and currently holds the position of Chaplain in the local Masonic Lodge. Bottomline: Stan is a long-standing member of Tucumcari's history. A dedicated community leader, he did everything expected of, above and beyond, many of his friends and peers who have passed away over the years. Since selling his business at the age of 81, what has happened to Stan in his golden years, within this small community he's loved and served all his life ?
Now a jolly-round man with a quirky little smile, and friendly disposition, Stan owns and operates Fort Bascom Trading Post, where he is a seller of used odds and ends. At a glance, one would describe it as a southwest curio and junk store with a few interesting "pieces" scattered here and there. A private 45 rpm record "juke box" rumored to have belonged to movie star Grear Garson, a Bally's nickel slot machine, and a coin-operated orchestrian that plays a tune for a quarter. There are the numerous Model As in various states of disrepair (rebuild); a couple look pretty complete. The business is housed in an old building whose interior is lighted by parallel rows of garish fluorescent lights that burn (a couple flicker) all day since the building's large picture windows were permanently boarded up after being broken out by vandals.
Who's buying this stuff? Nobody. "Economy's bad," Stan explains, "And I could sure use some sales, right now." Since he used to offer financing (credit) to his customers, a lot of people still owe him money from the former business, and most of them aren't paying. Stan has to file a claim (to garnish wages) against them, but can only do that if he has the extra $40 it costs to do so. Why don't they pay? "People are hurtin' here. They've been hurtin' for as long as I can remember, and can't afford to pay much for anything." Most of Stan's customers can't qualify for a credit card, don't have checking accounts, and "most live from paycheck to paycheck, if they're lucky enough to get a paycheck," he adds.
In 2006, Stan was approached by Ruth Nelson who wanted to buy his home furnishings business and transform it into her own decorator studio and interior design business. The deal was struck and Nelson's live-in male companion (then district judge Donald Schutte) bought the building from Stan with no hitches. Schutte apparently gave the building to Nelson as she is singularly listed as the owner of record at the Quay County Tax Assessor's Office. Nelson produced and presented a contract to Stan stating the terms under which she would purchase his business and inventory (valued at approximately $118,000 which Stan was discounting to her for approximately $63,000). Nelson was buying only the new merchandise from Stan and she understood that Stan would retain the used items to sell as used merchandise. Nelson was to pay for the inventory over time... or at least that's what Stan believes one of the contracts stated. You see, Nelson presented a number of versions of the contract to Stan over several days. Trusting, and in good faith, Stan signed each version of the contract that Nelson presented to him, but Stan was never given a copy of the final contract. Stan repeatedly asked Nelson for a copy, but those requests were ignored.
In 2007, Stan spent 30 full days in hospital battling and overcoming a case of pneumonia from which most people his age would have died. While Stan was still recovering at home, Nelson wrote a letter charging Stan with breach of contract, citing that she had seen a (free, courtesy) phone listing (not an advertisement) for his business in a telephone directory, and that Nelson had been told by a customer (hearsay) that Stan's staff had offered to order new items for them. For Nelson, these two events justified charging Stan with breach of a non-compete clause that was allegedly part of their terms of sale. This alleged breach therefore justified why she had the right to (abruptly) discontinue making payments to Stan for the inventory. Stan wasn't offered an opportunity to discuss the matter.
Meanwhile, Stan was slowly recovering from his illness and gradually returning to work. Stan continued to struggle to make payments on the original business loan he had obtained to buy the inventory that Nelson had bought, but now refused to pay for. Nelson was selling that inventory for pure profit and was realizing huge success in a faltering economy. This may explain how there were times when Nelson was able to sell $7,000 to $10,000 worth of merchandise each week... for a while.
Now comes the rub. Stan's family attorney (and CPA) refused to involve himself with a lawsuit against Nelson, not unlike five other attorneys across the state of New Mexico who, likewise, cited "conflicts of interest." Apparently, Nelson's live-in male companion (Schutte), the former New Mexico district judge and attorney also holds a seat on the New Mexico Bar Association Review Board, a position that could be politically dangerous for an opposing attorney to twiddle with.
Stan met with the sixth attorney in Albuquerque, a specialist in elder abuse law, who requested a $2000 retainer which he had borrowed from family members. To begin, the attorney requested a copy of the contract three times from Nelson who ignored the requests. The attorney wrote a letter of demand for payment to Ruth Nelson and Don Schutte. Schutte responded that he had nothing to do with the contract between Stanley Jennings and Ruth Nelson, and that Nelson would probably respond through her own legal counsel. (Keep in mind Nelson was living with Schutte, an attorney and former district judge capable of advising her in matters regarding business ethics, best practices, and taking appropriate legal actions.) Nelson did not respond to the letter.
The attorney told Stan that she would initiate a lawsuit against Nelson (and Nelson's attorney-judge-pro-bono-legal-counsel boyfriend for his role) if Stan provides a $10,000 retainer... which will only pay for "discovery" and filing initial paperwork. A subsequent trial or further legal action would be at an additional expense to Stan. With what Stan owes already on the business loan for the inventory, and borrowing the initial attorney fees, the old man would be looking at $100,000 of debt at age 83. This level of debt he'd never experienced in his life. The attorney voiced concern that Stan might not be able to physically weather the depositions, inquiries, interrogation, investigation, trial, or trials to come. [In the event that Stan died, he wouldn't be alive to pay for services rendered by the attorney, which probably explained the reason for such a large, up-front retainer.]
So now this elderly cornerstone of the community is caught in a no-win situation. Why? The attorney outlined Stan's options and possible options of outcome:
1). If Stan initiates a lawsuit against Nelson (along with her attorney-judge-pro-bono-legal-counsel boyfriend), and wins, it may be ruled that Nelson must pay Stan's legal fees, court costs, intangible and tangible damages that could total in excess of $100,000. Could (or would) Nelson pay this? Not if she demonstrates the inability to pay, and that might be pretty easy for her to do. Game over. Stan loses... and he would still owe court and legal costs... and would have to continue to pay on the business loan for the inventory.
2). If Stan initiates a lawsuit, odds are, Nelson (and her attorney-judge-pro-bono-legal-counsel boyfriend) would counter-sue Stan with the pointed strategy of elongating the legal process, thereby financially breaking and/or out-living the old man Stan. Game over. Stan loses with his debts being transferred to his estate, or to his elderly widow who also loses... along with his children and grandchildren (who may have had some sort of inheritance prior to such a lawsuit).
3). If Nelson counter-sues Stan and wins, Stan would probably be required to pay Nelson's court costs, tangible and intangible damages, as well as legal costs to her now exorbitantly expensive attorney-judge-NOT pro-bono-legal-counsel boyfriend who will have suddenly transformed into the most expensive legal counsel on earth. Stan loses absolutely everything because the attorney-judge-legal-counsel boyfriend would probably file a lien against every asset Stan has.
New Mexico Attorney General, Gary King advocates a strong stance on the protection of elders against abuse, both physical and financial. Yet a representative from the New Mexico Adult Protective Services Division stated that Stan's situation isn't really a case of financial elder abuse and that his case should be handled by law, through the legal system. If you review the options that the legal system offers (stated above), it is fairly easy to see that it offers little, if any, hope or opportunity for Stan to prevail in this situation.
Stan's retirement "plan" was simple. He wanted to spend his last days restoring Model A Fords, the kind he admired as a young man, but could never afford. Stan owns more than one shirt now, but his eyes tear up when he reflects about the moment when he had saved up enough money to buy two new shirts to have at one time. He gets up every morning, showers and shaves, checks his blood sugar, takes his insulin and other prescribed medications. He eats a little breakfast and feeds a group of cats before "going to work" at Fort Bascom Trading Post as a seller of used odds and ends, in an effort to make ends meet. For him, the weight of the world seems far heavier than it had 30, 40, 50 or 60 years ago. And he realizes he lacks strength. It seemed that Stan was headed on the same doomed path as the burn-gutted drugstore where he had once worked as a young man, only his suffering is lasting quite a bit longer. Stan is fast becoming the sun-dried hawk that fought for its life in the store display window until it could fight no longer, when no one either noticed or cared or tried to help it survive.

Healing Our Heroes
Sophie Saint Thomas of High Times Reports:
Sexual trauma is epidemic in the military, and survivors are demanding cannabis to help them heal.
A plate dropped at the restaurant where Kristina, a combat vet of 14 years, worked. She dove under a table. “It was around the 4th of July—that’s when the fireworks happen, which is a very stressful time for me,” she says. The national holiday is difficult for many vets, as fireworks can sound like a war zone. A younger male coworker wasn’t doing his job and ignored Kristina’s requests to pick up the slack. “I asked him repeatedly to do it, and then I lost it and almost went for the kid’s neck,” she recalls. Thankfully, a friend was present to bring her out of the flashback and into the present. “She nudged me with her elbow, and I was like, ‘Whoa, what just happened?’ I went to the VA the next day, and I haven’t been back to work since.”
While Kristina (whose last name is being withheld for legal protection) has been out of the military since 2008, it was only six months ago when she realized she was suffering from severe post-traumatic stress disorder. “PTSD is a huge problem regardless of the source, and we’re only starting to grapple with the implications as a society. Nowhere is going to be as difficult as the military,” says Harvard-trained holistic care and cannabis-therapeutics specialist Dr. Jordan Tishler.
Kristina is also a military sexual-trauma survivor. When asked if she was assaulted while in the service, she responds: “Yes, ma’am. Numerous times in numerous ways in numerous countries by numerous people.” According to a report released by the Pentagon, sexual assaults across the US military increased by nearly 38 percent in 2018. The Pentagon also estimated that 20,500 service members across the military branches, about 13,000 women and 7,500 men, were assaulted in 2018, according to an anonymous survey. A quick internet search provides an array of articles and research on combat violence, PTSD and cannabis, but the same is not true for sexual violence within the military. Despite the lack of acknowledgment, vets who survived both combat trauma and military sexual trauma (MST) may have particularly intense PTSD. “There is a greater persistence of the PTSD symptoms when both have been experienced,” says clinical psychologist and sexologist Dr. Denise Renye.
There is a void in what should be a plethora of discussions given how common MST is. According to a study looking into sexual harassment and assault of female US military personnel in the Persian Gulf War, sexual assault had a more significant impact on PTSD than combat exposure. “The sexual trauma was worse than anything they experienced combat-wise,” says somatic psychologist and sex therapist Holly Richmond when asked about her veteran clients. “Combat violence gets more attention because it’s seen as a valiant act,” says Alandria Hatcher, a US Army veteran who served from 1998 to 2009. She adds that despite the #MeToo movement, it’s no surprise that MST stats are going up. “I think, unfortunately, that in the era of #MeToo, because the military is such a good old boys club, they kind of poke fun at it,” Hatcher adds.
Ten years ago, the VA diagnosed Kristina with anxiety and “a little bit” of PTSD, so she assumed the incidents at work were anxiety-related. “I didn’t think it was as bad as it was until it got worse. PTSD is so unpredictable,” Kristina explains. Because she was on pharmaceuticals and in recovery from alcohol, she never considered cannabis as a viable treatment option. Then her son stepped in. While she was visiting him in California, he offered her a piece of infused white chocolate to help her sleep after he saw the large amount of benzodiazepines she was taking. Kristina was hesitant, but her son assured her he would take care of her. “I took the candy,” Kristina says. “I slept like a stinking baby and better than I had in years. The next day I called my husband, and I said, ‘Honey, how do you feel about me bringing home some butter?’ We made a whole bunch of butter at my son’s, and I took some plants home.” Kristina’s friends and family welcomed her new medicine when they saw how much it helped her.
Kristina has been making her own cannabis medicine ever since (and hasn’t had a drink). She also weaned herself off the pills. Of course, there is no shame in taking pharmaceuticals to help treat mental-health problems. Plenty of medical-cannabis users do. As Dr. Tishler notes, “I have some qualms over ‘I’ve got to get off this medicine’… It undermines the validity of that medicine for people who truly need it.”
Some vets, such as Kristina, say using cannabis dramatically improved their health. “Without cannabis, it’s just so hard to be me,” Kristina says. She is not the only MST survivor who finds that cannabis improves their quality of life. “They wanted me on a ton of pills, and that’s great, but I like to be able to function. I learned about CBD and that certain strains didn’t give you a high but helped calm the parts of your brain that get overactive with stressors,” Hatcher says. “I found cannabis a lot more effective than anything else,” agrees fellow veteran Lauren Hough. Previously, she tried an array of antidepressants but ultimately found the side effects were not worth the benefits.
Hough joined the military right after high school in 1996 and served for five years. She was raped by an acquaintance while at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA, which she attended after basic training. She was hanging out and drinking with friends on the beach. “I was drunk and going back to the dorms because I just wanted to go to bed. I started walking up the hill, and he walked with me, and he ended up raping me,” Hough says.
After the rape, Hough returned to her dorm and was reported for being drunk by the dorm guard who signed her in. “My eyes were bloodshot and I had leaves in my hair. Those things were not because I was drunk. He reported me, and I got called to the student leader’s office on Monday,” she recalls. During the meeting, she told the student leader what happened. The student leader told Hough not to say anything because if she reported the rape, she’d also need to report the drinking, which would not only get Hough in trouble, but also every friend she was drinking with. “She said, ‘This is the worst thing I’m ever going to tell you, but you will get in trouble and he won’t,”’ Hough recalls. “It sounds strange to say to civilians, but she did this out of concern for me. She was like, ‘I’ve seen what will happen, I know what will happen, and you will lose your security clearance. You will lose rank. Your career is over if you report him.’” The student leader added that Hough was free to go ahead and report it, and she would back her up if she did, but Hough needed to understand the consequences fully. “I would have lost everything. So I didn’t,” she says.
The latest data from the Pentagon shows that about one in three MST survivors reports their assault. Civilian survivors face humiliation, cruel legal systems and re-traumatization when reporting rape too, but the military is its own beast. “We’re stationed places with [our assaulter]. We cannot quit our jobs, and we cannot walk away. You have to work with those people every day,” Kristina says. “Most of the time, you’re somewhere that is away from your home. It could jeopardize your career and make things a lot worse. So nobody says anything. I didn’t say anything.”
“If you report, your career is done,” Hatcher says. “The investigation is going to humiliate you and make you feel like you deserved it.” Someone Hatcher thought was a friend assaulted her while she was stationed in Germany in 2000. She was assaulted again, by a chief warrant officer who had significant rank over her, during her deployment to Afghanistan in 2007. “Your career is effectively over because you’re admitting [to breaking] General Order No. 1,” Hatcher says. “Even though it was a violation, your career is done.” General Order No. 1 lists prohibited activities for military personnel such as drinking alcohol and sexual relationships, and it’s a common obstacle for MST survivors who do choose to report. LGBTQ soldiers such as Hatcher and Hough who served during the “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” era also had to hide their assault in addition to hiding their identity. “It was a very difficult time, because you were proud to serve your country, but I had to hide who I was. I couldn’t serve my country as myself. I served my country under a facade to be what they expected of me,” Hatcher says. She adds that work still needs to be done to protect LGBTQ service members and people of color. “The commercials like to pretend that the army is this big inclusive place, but racism and sexism are still incredibly prevalent.”
Despite their trauma, the veterans interviewed share fond memories of the military. “Nobody tells you to smile; you don’t have to worry about what you’re going to wear that day. It’s the happiest place for lesbians until they find out you’re a lesbian,” Hough says. Kristina recently completed a five-month program run by the VA for military sexual-assault survivors. “Everybody gives the VA this bad rap. I want to be the one who tells you that the VA has always given me excellent health care. The only thing that I can say is that the VA, which is a government entity, needs to be able to work with me in my choice in how I want to medicate so that I can recover from the things that have happened to me,” Kristina says. “I don’t get that choice because [cannabis] is still considered a Schedule I drug. I told my doctor that I was going off all my medication. In fact, she told me how to do it. I told her I was using herbal supplements instead of medication. I didn’t say specifically that I was using cannabis. I wish I could tell her.” Until the federal government takes action, vets must continue to seek their cannabis elsewhere. “Marijuana is illegal under federal law, and until federal law changes, [the] VA is not able to prescribe it,” Susan Carter, director of the office of media relations at the Department of Veterans Affairs, told High Times when asked about vets using cannabis as part of their treatment.
Hatcher now works as a clinical data analyst in a legal state, and she uses health insurance separate from the VA so she doesn’t have to worry about her cannabis use affecting her access to health care. Hough told her VA doctor about her cannabis use, and while he admitted that it probably does help treat PTSD, he can’t prescribe it.
While there are studies that suggest cannabis helps treat PTSD—and PTSD is even a qualifying condition for medical marijuana in many states—more research is needed to understand exactly how and why it helps. “The restrictions contained in federal law are clear. Some research is allowed, but must be done in conjunction with the aforementioned federal entities,” Carter explains. “If Congress wants to facilitate more federal research into Schedule I controlled substances such as marijuana, it can always choose to eliminate these restrictions.” Nonetheless, it is evident that there are legions of military sexual-trauma survivors who successfully use cannabis to treat their condition, even when it means putting their disability payments or access to medical care on the line.
“You have to literally put your life in the hands of somebody who thinks that you’re not valuable,” Hatcher says of women serving alongside their rapist. While all sexual assault is horrifying, the breach of trust and respect—principles the military is supposedly built upon—that occurs is immensely dehumanizing. Once MST survivors leave the service, which is often an extremely difficult lifestyle transition, they go on to do whatever it takes to get that missing piece back in the civilian world. “There’s a very deep sense of betrayal. When I joined, I believed the movies and the books that I read that this would be the finest brotherhood, and everybody would be accepted, and you’d have a common purpose,” Hough says. “To be raped by someone in the same uniform takes away from what you believed in it.”

THE OSWALD HANCILES COLUMN(July 4th 2019)
Let us learn! Wilo, observers since the 80s to the time I quit journalism, rated FDP as the most fearless, consistent, uncompromising newsp aper in the history of Salone. And of course, the most persecuted journalists, including martyr Yansaneh who was killed by the SLPP. To be a journalist and gain a reputation amongst all journalists within and outside Salone, demands a lot of sacrifice, commitment and selflessness. No politician of whatever colour or dispensation, can claim to had bribed me, including our former prezo, or any other APC politician for that matter. What in Salone? Where everything is corruption? Started civil society organisations in 96, after FDP organised the first international peace conference bringing the whole country together at City Hall. Also played a pivotal role to end the rebel war and bring the rebels out of the bush to talk peace. So I am the harbinger of peace not only to the APC but the country. Brought the Wellington Muslim Association together and provided a vast land to become the largest islamic organisation in the entire country with 65 jamaat. Played a leading role in organising and working with the womens movement including Madam Zainab Bangura to stand up for democracy. And it was this great Salone woman who together with the US Embassy, eventually convinced me to join Bio for the sake of democracy. And it took four days to consent and subsequently survived an assassination attempt. The only Salonean to confront the entire judiciary to become the reference point for seditious and defamatory libel laws in the entire Commonwealth countries, including Salone. That's not a feat many politicians could afford to risk life and limb for the people and the common good. Also confronted successive parliaments and equally faced their wrath and venom in the struggle for Seperation of Powers. The only other journalist to suffer so, is Comrade Shekito who was locked up for a month for an alleged contempt which was a hoax to jail the poor man. I stood by him all the way. To confront all the regimes since Shaki to date, qualifies me amongst few Saloneans, who actually know the system proper and the solution to the problem. In short, I am the No 1 defender of people's rights in Ma Salone compared to any politician whatsoever. Perhaps also, the only politician who has fought for the youths, women, drivers, teachers, musicians, traders, market women and other various unions and youth groups. And without profit. Nobody has told truth to power and made selfless sacrifice for this country, more than of course, you know very well. In short Wilo, I have seen it all more than most Salonean politicians. And one of the most experienced, sincere and honest. He who confronts it, knows the system better than any elite politician enriched by the system. And they know they can never change it bcos they are the very behemoths that prop up this negative sustem of dog eat dogism. Not only that, they had never challenged the rotten system. Take for instance after Bio overthrew Strasser. I will tell you that all my cabinet colleagues, including Samura, Barrie and Sam wanted khaki continuity in civilian clothing. I was the only one that confronted the NPRC 2, and I paid the price. I also refused Bio's salary. And I also did not take any part in what they shared. And I also did not take a single land, when I could've taken hundreds of acres of land and be rich, especially looted under junta. But I refused all enticements, and to block them, I promulgated a decree that placed a moratorium on the sale and lease of all state lands. Which also angered them like hell. Only politicians that don't dance, can bring about the necessary changes and bring about the positive changes we all desire for Ma Salone after 2023 victory. And a new and different way of doing things bcos dis tem, orinch go born orinch en lem sef go born lem. The problem with many of our members, especially the young ones, is that they don't know or understand men and things in politics, and are easily carried away by greed, opportunism and sycophancy. There is no APC politician that stands close to my resume as a freedom fighter, whose credentials can easily beat Bio. And the only one that confronted him for democracy. Infact, not one APC politician has ever stood up or champion the cause of the worker, teacher, students, grassroots etc than myself. And if we fbs say we are democrats and pro poor, then this time, let us all show our credentials and let the party decide. Nobody should pass through any selection process, if we want to win! And we must win big even though, we are battling against the most autocratic leader in the entire history of our nation. Wilo, I offered space to NRM bcos we first tossed the idea with Jarra and Kasho, but the party thought otherwise. We must help the youths organise and grow to help promote the much-needed party reforms we all so desire. Now let me tell you my constituency. They are the rebel, d sobel, d kolonko and d kalanka including d ex-combatants. They are the APC Task Force, Friends of the Dead, Black Street and many others scattered in ghettos and other places including those in the south east. I am also a veteran and son of the APC who shines like the sun itself and the 'mynia' or light of a liberated, pro poor and grassrootd APC. In short ar don pas journalism, but it taught me that we can make things better with a strong political will. All those politicians and civil servants and others I worked with, knows my position when it comes to matter that have to do with the development of Ma Salone. ☝🏾Paul Kamara in SLAVE SHIP-FREEDOM SHIP Group 4-Youth forum Hon. Paul Kamara: Minister of Sports in the government of President Ernest Bai Koroma(2012 to 2018); Minister of Lands and Environment in the government of President Brigadier Maada Bio(1996); Publisher of For Di People newspaper: Blow your own horn if people forget to blow it for you. No one has yet challenged you that you have told lies in your regular biographical postings on social media. Can you please be clear: what is the purpose of your blowing your trumpet at this point in time? Another question: Can you publish on social media your articles, or, editorials in your For Di People newspaper, that show your critiques or criticisms of the government of President Ernest Bai Koroma between November, 2007 and March, 2018? Again: break your postings into short paragraphs. You want to be read, not so? It's disgraceful for a veteran celebrated journalist like you to write such long paragraphs - what any editor worth his salt would scream at a rookie reporter for.

The Zodiac: Part One
The Zodiac Killer. The most notorious serial killer in the San Fransisco Bay area. To this day the case is still unsolved. First, I’m going to tell you the facts and then my personal theories. If any of these facts are wrong or misleading, please private message me, don’t make negative comments
The first letter was received by The San Fransisco Examiner in 1969. It contained a coded message. But before this, he had started his killings.
Lake Herman Road Attack was the first of the Zodiac attacks. On December 20, 1968, two high school students, Betty Lou Jensen, and David Faraday were shot. They were attending a Christmas concert for their first date. They were parked in the “lover’s lane,” a gravel turnout. Robert Graysmith had the idea that there may have been another car that pulled in behind the couple and shot the pair. Faraday was shot first in the head, Jensen seeing this tried to flee. However, she was gunned down 28 feet from the car. Faraday did survive.
The next attack was the Blue Rock Springs attack of July 4th, 1969. Just four miles from the Lake Herman site, Darlene Ferrin and Michael Mageau had driven to the public park. If you have ever seen the 2007 movie, The Zodiac, what happened to this pair is almost exactly what happened in the movie scene. They were parked in the lot. Then a second car pulled in and then suddenly drove away quickly, only to return ten minutes later. When the driver returned, he parked directly behind them. He, the driver of the second car, approached Ferrin and Mageau on the passenger side of the car. The killer came to the window shining a flashlight and a 9 millimeter in their eyes and shooting five times. He started walking away, however after hearing Mageau moaning, he proceeded to shot him twice more. Further, on the 5th of July, a man phoned in the double murder and also claiming to have killed the first couple from the previous December.
The police were able to track the call to a phone booth that was only blocks away from Ferrin’s home. Ferrin was unfortunately pronounced dead at the scene. Mageau was able to survive, even though he was shot in the head, neck, and chest. Mageau was also able to describe his girlfriend’s killer. He described him as a 26-30-year-old male, 195-200 pounds, and around 5 foot 8, with short light brown curly hair.
Then the letters started to appear. There were three letters, all received on August 1st, 1969. The letters were delivered to three newspapers around San Fransisco. The Vallejo Times Herald, San Fransisco Chronicle, and the San Fransisco Examiner.  They were nearly the exact same letter. When examined by a psychiatrist the letters would have been expected to be written by a man who is brooding and isolated. These letters came with a demand, the killer demanded the papers to put his letter on the front page. The letters came with a 408 symbol crypt. If the newspaper didn’t print this on the first page the killer threated to “cruise around all weekend killing lone people in the night then move to kill again, until I end up with a dozen people over the weekend (direct quote from the letters).”
“The Chronicle published its third of the cryptogram on page four of the next day's edition. An article printed alongside the code quoted Vallejo Police Chief Jack E. Stiltz as saying "We're not satisfied that the letter was written by the murderer" and requested the writer send a second letter with more facts to prove his identity. The threatened murders did not happen, and all three parts were eventually published ( from the contributors at Wikipedia).”
There was a second letter received on August 7th of that same year. The letter, received by the San Fransisco Examiner, was the first time the killer was given a name. He called himself the “Zodiac.” Then just the next day the crypt was cracked.
And this is where I leave you for part one. Part two hopefully will be up in a few days.
till then, keep your eyed open.

The casts are cofirmed for ALEXANDER MATTHEWS’ two plays at Tristan Bates opening January 31st: Screaming Secrets – press night February 6th 2018 Cast: Ilaria Ambrogi, Gregory Cox, Theo Devaney, Jack Gordon, Trianna Terry, Ben Warwick Glass Roots – press night March 6th 2018 Cast: Victoria Broom, Mitchell Fisher, Natalia Perera, Sam Rix, Kal Sabir, Ben Warwick.
Both plays are directed by Evan Keele with production design by Nancy Surman.
‘SCREAMING SECRETS’ explores our need to be understood and appreciated. It places relationships and moral dilemmas under scrutiny through the power of the writer’s philosophical lens. What do we do when we’re faced with our own mortality? How do we tell our family and friends and what should we do with the time that’s left? These are the questions that face philosopher and free thinker Antonio (Jack Gordon) as he discovers that he’s not as healthy as he thinks. Surrounded by his irascible father Alessandro (Gregory Cox), his dramatic sister Gina (Ilaria Ambrogi), flirty girlfriend Monika (Triana Terry) drunken publisher Hugo (Theo Devaney) and apologetic doctor Simon (Ben Warwick), Antonio has to make up his mind rapidly.
“We all have secrets,” says Alexander Matthews, “but because life is so fragmented and fast moving, and we all have widely different agendas, when we do open our hearts (and scream our secrets) we are often not heard or understood…at least on our own terms or indeed, above the cacophony of modern life.”
“I think the philosophical element of ‘Screaming Secrets’ adds to the poetic feel of the play,” continues Matthews. “For this production, I have taken out some of the philosophy but left enough in, I hope, to keep a philosophical tinge to what Antonio and sometimes Simon say.”
ILARIA AMBROGI – Gina llaria is from Italy where her theatre credits include Peter Pan (Teatro Vascello, Rome) and Twelfth Night and Romeo and Juliet. In 2007 she wrote her first one-woman show, The Echo, and performed it at Teatro dell’Orologio, in Rome. She was a member of the Kairos Italy Theater Company in New York for many years, performing Italian plays for the American audience.
GREGORY COX – Alessandro Gregory’s extensive acting credentials stretch from the West End to theatres all over the UK, Europe and the Far East. His credits include Oliver! (West End), Little Lies (West End and Toronto), Only When I Laugh (Hong Kong), The Picture of Dorian Gray (UK tour), Death of a Salesman (Frankfurt English Theatre), Tale of Two Cities, Hamlet, King Lear, Henry IV, Much Ado About Nothing (various venues UK and abroad) and many more. TV and film work include Doctors, Keep Up Appearances, Brookside, Eastenders, Poirot and many more.

In 2012 Theo relocated to Vancouver, Canada and wrote and produced the award-winning short play, Run and became best known to UK TV audiences as Gavin Macleod in the long running TV series Supernatural; while he was based in Canada he also appeared in the films Psych and Night at the Museum: Secrets of the Tomb.
JACK GORDON – Antonio Jack’s theatre credits include a number of productions as RADA including Carmen 1936, The Duchess of Malfi, Odysseus, As You Like It, A Month in the Country; plus War Horse (National Theatre/West End), Lulu (Gate Theatre), ‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore (Cheek by Jowl), Romeo and Juliet (Battersea Arts Centre). ‘GLASS ROOTS’ is about bullying: what happens when you are bullied and are powerless to fight back? Can you survive with your psychology intact or is the damage permanent? This is the terrible ordeal faced by Sadjit and Thila, owners of a popular Indian restaurant in east London when they are terrorised in their own place of work by racist thugs.
‘Glass Roots’ addresses the violent clash of ignorance, racism, class and jealousy and wonders at the outcome; will the perpetrators get what they want and will the victims survive with a renewed purpose?
“In ‘Glass Roots’ the protagonists’ frustrations and longings are a hook, their being bullied is another,” says Alexander Matthews. “In a way, the feelings of the audiences will be forced into a corner by the bullying and that will steer them towards Thila and Sadjit.”
‘GLASS ROOTS’ CAST: VICTORIA BROOM – Celia Victoria’s TV credits include: Marcella (ITV/Netflix), Different for Girls (JackDaw Productions), Nurses Who Kills (First look TV and Alibi), Crossroads (Carlton Television), Derren Brown Hero at 33000 Feet (Channel 4). S.H.I.E.L.D. continues research on Vanko’s “Whiplash” technology, the Tesseract, Samuel Sterns’ mutation, Jane Foster’s Nine Realms theory, and manage to thaw out a recently recovered Steve Rogers. The Darkhold also comes to their attention.
The Fifth Street Locos shoot up Eli Morrow’s car, which Robbie and Gabe Reyes had recently stolen. The car flips and Robbie is killed while Gabe is paralyzed. The Ghost Rider appears and saves Gabe’s life as well as Robbie’s, though the later is transformed into the new Ghost Rider.
Loki, aided by Thanos and The Other, uses the Tesseract energy to teleport him to S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Joint Dark Energy Mission Facility where he steals the Tesseract and controls the minds of Selvig and Hawkeye. Heimdall alerts Thor and Odin of Loki’s arrival on Earth.
Meanwhile, Romanoff is undercover and interrogating weapons-dealer Georgi Luchkov; her mission is cut short by a call from Coulson, telling her Hawkeye’s been compromised.
Thor arrives back on Earth thanks to Odin’s use of dark energy to transport him. He has a brief skirmish with Iron Man and Captain America that ends with the agreement to take Loki into S.H.I.E.L.D. custody.
The Battle proceeds to New York where Loki opens a wormhole to allow the invading Chitauri army to swarm into the city. The Avengers unite, defeat Loki, and manage to prevent a missile from wiping out New York City. The invasion is ended and the Tesseract is reclaimed; Thor takes it to Asgard for safe keeping.
Many media outlets and private citizens record video of the invasion that show off both the heroic and destructive effects of the battle, in which the mother of Audrey Eastman and the mother of Ellen Nadeer and Vijay Nadeer died.

The cleanup from the Battle of New York begins. Citizens begin to gather bits and pieces of the alien tech, taking it either as trophies or for other purposes. To prevent this, Tony Stark and the federal government reformed the U.S. Department of Damage Control, Spider-Man: Homecoming spoiler: which puts private salvage contractors like Adrian Toomes out of business. Toomes, however, takes this opportunity to pilfer more alien technology and put it to criminal purposes.
Phil Coulson is resurrected at the Guest House, though the painful process has the agent begging the surgeons to let him die and necessitating the implantation of false memories, like Tahiti.

Stark’s mansion is destroyed by the Mandarin.
After discovering Killian’s plan, Stark and his Iron Legion save an Extremis-infected Pepper Potts (who didn’t need much saving after all) while Rhodes rescues the kidnapped President.
Pepper’s Extremis effects are neutralized while Stark has the last of the shrapnel near his heart surgically removed, throwing the old, obsolete Arc Reactor into the sea. Stark has the Iron Legion destroyed.

047: Ashley Lana Scott & Sarah Dennis: Become a co-conspirator for social justice
“We’re all different and that’s part of human nature, to celebrate those differences.” -Sarah Dennis
Calling in, rather than calling out…
In this episode, I had the privilege to discuss the history and the current reality of racism in our society as well as the potential for change from the inside out (and the outside in) with educator Sarah Dennis and artist & activist Ashley Lana Scott.
Sarah and Ashley had never met before so this was a truly candid conversation about what it takes to be an ally, how to support one another in looking inward at our internalized racism (regardless of skin color), and why these sometimes uncomfortable conversations are crucial to the cultural dialogue. (BTW, that’s the difference between calling in and calling out…  IN is initiating a conversation, OUT is pointing a finger in an accusatory way.)
Of course we talk about impostor syndrome and feeling like a total fraud when trying to have said difficult conversations, too!
This is a conversation that is humorous, sensitive, hopeful and deeply thought-provoking.
So take a deep breath, relax your mind open, have a listen, and let me know what you think over in the Facebook Group.
And if you haven’t already, check out Episode 045: Talking to strangers, where you’ll hear how I met Julie and why I’m taking on a theme on the show that pushes me out of my comfort zone. Also, Episode 046 with Andrea Ranae Johnson on how to use your power and privilege for good.

“At the end of the day, the thing that is pulling the strings is our silence, on every side, and that silence is deadly. Like Sarah was saying, when you allow yourself to feel that shame and then you don’t want to do anything about it, you allow it to overcome your action, it makes the decision for you… I suggest getting your hands dirty with that shame.” -Ashley Lana Scott

“I actually like the word ‘co-conspirator’ better, I think ‘ally’ is really soft and wimpy. For me it’s not a call to action, being an ally. But being a co-conspirator makes me feel like, “I want to dismantle this system and I’m going to do anything I can to figure out what that looks like.” -Sarah Dennis

About Sarah Dennis
Ph.D, Biography
I grew up in Chicago, attending a Chicago Public Magnet school that attracted children from diverse racial, ethnic, religious and socio-economic backgrounds near the Cabrini Green Housing Project in the mid-late 80s/early 90s. From the young age of about 10, I was inspired to become an engaging educator committed to social justice to help turn children on to the love of learning and reading, and try to change the inequities in many of the systems in the United States. Also from the age of 10, I was a proud member of the Chicago Children’s Choir, a multi-cultural, multi-racial, secular city-wide organization committed to social justice. My experiences at my elementary school and choir helped shape my commitment to social justice.
After attending New York University for a Bachelors degree in Early Childhood/Elementary Education and then teaching preschool/Kindergarten, 3rd, 4th and 5th grades at public schools in New York City, I began coaching and mentoring preschool teachers in the Best Practices in Early Literacy Project, which led to two Early Reading First projects (2002-’05 & 2005-’08). During these years, I earned a Masters in Literacy Education (2005) and a doctorate in Early Childhood (2008) from New York University.
I have presented at many dozens of conferences nationally including the National Head Start Research Conference in Washington D.C. (2002, ’04, ’06 & ’08), NAEYC’s Professional Development Institute (Pittsburg, 2007; Indianapolis, 2012), NIEER’s Conference (2002), the Early Reading First Grantees Meeting (2004 in AZ, 2005 in FL, 2007 in CA), the Illinois Reading Council Conference (Springfield, 2011-2014), and have provided professional development and coaching to many hundreds of teachers and coaches. I have also been assessing and tutoring children (Kindergarten-HS) for nearly 15 years in NYC and Chicago.
I am the founder and co-leader of the Illinois Chapter of the National Association for Multicultural Education: Advancing and Advocating for Social Justice & Equity, and have also founded and co-lead the Families for Racial Justice Chicago Facebook Group. I recently participated as part of a panel on anti-racism for the Quentin B. Young Equity Project (Feb 2017) (see photo below), and I am currently in training to hopefully become a trainer with the People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond.
I hope to hear from you soon to see how I can support your work to inspire the children of the next generation!
