Childhood Friends AU: Marikim part 4
In which two dumbasses fall in love
AN: You don't have to read the previous parts to understand this one, but it might add a little context. parts 1-3 are only headcanons about their friendship though, there's nothing romantic included unlike in this part.
Read them here: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3
-Kim catches feelings first
-he doesn’t realize it at first, but ever since Lila accused him of having feelings for Mari he started wondering what dating her would be like
-they would be doing something mundane like homework, or walking to school together, and he would start to wonder how different it would be if they were dating.
-he assumes they would hold hands, maybe give each other quick kisses when no was looking
-and he starts to think that he wouldn’t mind holding hands with Marinette or kissing her
-just as friends tho, because he totally does not have a crush on her
-but then, Ondine confesses to him
-and his first thought is ‘but I like Marinette’
-he says that out loud though
-“oh shit, I’m sorry Ondine. I didn’t mean to say that. I don’t know why I said that, because I totally don’t have a crush on Marinette…”
-Kim is in denial
-Ondine is a little sad, but she’s also a total bro
-meaning if she can’t be with her crush then she’ll make sure her crush is at least happy
-Kim doesn’t make it easy though, because he’s also a bro
-once he accepts that he genuinely likes Marinette, he doesn’t even consider the possibility of them dating
-because Marinette likes Adrien
-Kim’s heart aches a little when he remembers that
-so there’s only one thing for him to do
-get Marinette and Adrien together
-Ondine agrees to help, but secretly has an ulterior motive
-which is: get Marinette to fall for Kim while Kim is trying to get her and Adrien to date
-it’s a mess
-but together they make a rough plan
-the first step is to get Marinette to actually hold a normal conversation with Adrian
-they’ll have her practice on Kim to start
-kim wanted to team up with Alya initially, but Ondine convinces him that it’s best if they work separately
-bc Ondine doesn’t want Marinette and Adrien to actually get together. Alya would take the planning seriously, while Ondine is not
-they rush over to Marinette’s house after swim practice
-Kim has a key to Marinette’s house so he doesn’t even knock
-he just pops into the bakery to hug Sabine, wave at Tom, and grab some snacks
-Ondine marvels at how close they have to be for Kim to be this comfortable with Marinette’s family
-they run up to Mari’s room
-again, Kim doesn’t knock, he just walks in and flops on her couch
-Ondine awkwardly walks in with a wave bc she doesn’t really know Marinette and doesn’t want to seem rude
-Marinette had been expecting Kim but is surprised to see Ondine
-her shipper brain starts wondering if she should help them get together?
- “We’re going to help you get together with Adrien!” Kim announces.
-Marinette collapses back in her chair with a groan
- “Ugh, not you too! Maybe I’m happy just watching him from afar.”
“No offence Mari, but that makes you sound like a creepy stalker,” Kim argues.
“I can’t even talk to Adrien properly! Much less get the courage to ask him out!”
“That’s what we’re going to help you with!” Ondine interjects. “With our help, you’ll be able to talk to Adrien without a problem!”
-Marinette’s curiosity is piqued
- “How?”
-Marinette reluctantly agrees with practice on Kim, not convinced that it’ll actually work
-they sit on the floor facing each other, with Ondine in the middle like a referee
-they tape a picture of Adrien to Kim’s face
-Kim does bad impressions of Adrien’s voice and Marinette can’t collect herself well enough to hold a conversation
-not because she’s nervous but bc she keeps laughing at Kim’s impressions
-Ondine is in serious coach mode tho
-she pretends to blow a whistle every time they mess up
“Come on team! I know you can get this right!”
-eye holes are cut in the picture of Adrien so that Kim can see
-but that just makes Marinette laugh harder
-a mouth hole is added so Kim can eat some snacks
-Kim tries to impersonate Adrien while eating
-does a dramatic hair flip and chokes on a cookie
-Marinette is sobbing from laughter and Ondine has given up on whistling
-eventually (after they run out of snacks) they calm down
-Ondine throws away the picture of Adrien
-Things are serious now
-Kim takes Marinette’s hands and gives her a gentle smile while leaning forward slightly
“Hey Marinette,” he says in a low voice
-and Marinette’s heart skips a beat. Just once.
-but there were no thoughts of Adrien in her head
-once she does think of Adrien doing this, then she turns beat red
“uh, h-hey A-A-Adrien! How’s you do? I-I mean, h-how do you? How are you!”
-Kim is starting to blush now because Marinette is just so cute
-He wants to bop her on the nose
-so he does
-Marinette blushes even harder, but it ruins the roleplay
“KIM! Adrien isn’t going to randomly bop me on the nose!
“He might! I’m trying to prepare you for all possible events!” Kim argues to save his ass
-Ondine lowkey feels like she’s third wheeling
-but on the upsides, the longer she watches Marinette and Kim interact, the more she ships them and the smaller her crush grows
-soon she’ll be a full-time Marikim shipper
-after that first instance, Marinette can’t imagine Kim as Adrien
-Kim insists that she just needs to “focus on the blonde part of his hair”
-but it doesn’t work
-their conversations turn into inside jokes about each other
-eventually hunger drives them downstairs for dinner
-Ondine is invited to stay and the conversation turns to swim practice
-eventually Ondine stops feeling like a third wheel
-the next step is to have Marinette interact with Adrien in a group setting
-so another study group is scheduled
-in the days leading up to the study group, Kim starts lowkey hyping Marinette up to Adrien
-when Marinette gets an A on a test Kim is holding it up to show Adrien how smart Marinette is
-when Marinette stumbles through a few lines in another language Kim shouts to Adrien, “Dude, did you hear that? Marinette is BILINGUAL”
-when Marinette makes it to class just before the bell rings, Kim nudges Adrien and goes, “Isn’t Marinette cute when she’s running late?”
-whenever someone compliments Kim on something he goes, “Psh, Marinette is twice as good as me. DID YOU KNOW THAT ADRIEN?”
-Adrien assumes this is Kim’s weird way on trying to become friends, by talking up one of their mutual friends
-so, he starts talking up Marinette to Kim
- “did you know Marinette is so talented that Jagged Stone asked her to design his album cover?!”
-this leads to full-blown conversations about Marinette in the hallway
-which actually leads to them becoming friends?
-through talking about Marinette, they realize they have a lot in common
-both like sports, video games, jagged stone, and Marinette
-Ondine overhears Kim hyping Marinette up to Adrien in the hallway and decides to copy him
-She starts coming over every day after practice under the guise of ‘helping Marinette learn to talk to Adrien’
-really it just devolves into the three of them joking around after an hour
-but during these ‘sessions’ she starts hyping Kim up
- “Kim nearly broke a world record at practice today! I swear he’s going to the Olympics!”
-Kim always returns the compliment tho
- “If I’m going to the Olympics then so are you! You’re just as good!”
-which further convinces Marinette that they like each other
-Finally, that Saturday is the study group
-its Max, Nino, Chloe, Adrien, Kim, and the newest addition of Ondine
-(if you want to know how the study group started read part 3)
-Marinette spends the morning nervously cooking snacks
-Kim and Ondine come over early to ‘help’
-Kim knows how to cook, but he spends most of the time stealing bits of batter
-Ondine doesn’t know how to cook, so Marinette shows her the ropes
-This helps Marinette calm down too
-Marinette is more nervous than the last time their study group met because this time she has the ulterior motive of trying to get closer to Adrien while last time she was focused on studying
-the study group gathers in the living room of Marinette’s house
-Kim and Adrien are next to each other and Marinette is strategically placed across from them
-this way if Marinette gets too nervous to look at Adrien, she can look at Kim instead and pretend she’s talking to him
-the first couple minutes of the study group are filled with laughter and snacks as everyone piles into the living room
-but eventually they quiet down to do some independent studying
-Adrien is great at science so Marinette figures she’ll ask him to explain one of the concepts listed on their science study guide
“Hey Adrien,” Marinette starts confidently, however, almost as soon as the words are out of her mouth she starts to get cold feet. She glances at Kim who gives her a subtle thumbs up and a wink. Marinette swears the blush that starts to cover her face is just from being nervous about talking to Adrien.
Adrien glances up from his book, “What’s up, Marinette?”
Marinette glances back and forth between Kim and Adrien before settling her gaze on Adrien.
“C-could you explain how the potato is used as an example of osmosis? I don’t understand it.”
-Adrien is happy to help, and launches into an explanation
-Marinette so is high of the rush of dopamine from successfully asking Adrien a question that she’s able to ask two follow up questions after Adrien is done speaking
-Nino pinches Max to keep him from intervening
-Kim is proud of Marinette, but he can’t help but also be a little sad because she’s never been that excited to simply talk to him
-however, what he doesn’t know is that after Marinette successfully talks to Adrien, she finds her thoughts not centered around Adrien, but around Kim
-She knows science isn’t Kim’s best subject and her thoughts keep drifting from questions to ask Adrien to how Kim is doing.
-she doesn’t realize it yet, but her feelings for Adrien have shrunken a little which is partly why she found it easier to talk to him
-the other reason is that she’s just become more confident in herself due to the ‘practice sessions’
-when the study group ends Kim and Ondine stay behind to help clean up
-Kim is hiding the fact that he’s bummed about Marinette and Adrien and Ondine realizes this so she tries to distract him
-she sticks two pretzel sticks in her mouth
“Guess what I am?”
“Uh, a walrus, duh.”
“No! I’m the giant spider from Harry Potter.”
Kim chokes on a laugh from surprise, “What the hell? How was I supposed to guess that?”
-Marinette watches them mess around and becomes certain that they like each other
-but now she feels…off about it.
-together the three clean up quickly
-the weekly Dupain cheng/Le family dinner is tonight, so Kim isn’t leaving after study group, but Ondine gets ready to leave
-Marinette invites her to stay for dinner though
-even though she feels weird about Ondine and Kim getting together she’s still gonna do what she can to help their relationship
-bc she’s also a bro
-also, Ondine has been around so much the past month that she’s practically a permanent fixture in Marinette’s life
-she also doesn’t knock anymore when entering Mari’s room and is on a first name basis with her parents
-Ondine is honestly glad to have become such good friends with Marinette
-After the success of the first study group, more are planned
-it becomes a biweekly event
-Ondine is worried at first that this might backfire and Marinette and Adrien will actually get together
-but she notices that while Marinette talks to Adrien more she also blushes less
-in their practice sessions Marinette has also stopped gushing over Adrien
-what convinced Ondine for sure that Marinette’s crush on Adrien was gone though was when a new exclusive photoshoot of Adrien came out and the first thing Marinette commented was the design of his outfit
-how did things get to this point?
-well, interacting as friends and focusing on becoming friends made Marinette see Adrien in a platonic light
-Marinette just doesn’t realize her crush is gone bc it was so ingrained in her that it became a facet of her identity
-she has black hair, blue eyes, and a crush on Adrien
-it’s when Marinette has zoned out while staring at Kim that Ondine decides they’re ready to move to the next step
-it’s time for Marinette and Kim to go on a fake date
-the official reason is so that Marinette gets practice before asking Adrien out
-the unofficial reason is that Ondine is 90% sure that Marinette is also crushing on Kim now, and she thinks that if they’re in a romantic setting then she’ll realize the reality of her feelings
-and so, after school, instead of going home like usual, Marinette and Kim go to the movies instead to see the newest romantic comedy
-Ondine secretly trails after them with binoculars, just to make sure everything goes well
-Kim pays and refuses to split the price, much to Marinette’s dismay
-as the trailers play, they get into a mini popcorn fight and waste half their popcorn
-a bunch of it ends up stuck in Marinette’s hair
-Kim, heart pounding, holds Marinette’s chin to keep her head still as he gently pulls popcorn out of her hair
-The darkness of the theater is the only thing hiding Marinette’s blush.
-Kim leans closer, focusing on getting all the little pieces of popcorn
-Marinette’s gaze is locked on Kim though. Their faces are only inches apart.
-Suddenly, Kim looks down and realizes the position they’re in
-He’s frozen, unsure of what to do.
-He wants to lean in and kiss her, but he thinks she still likes Adrien
-Adrien, however, is the last thing on Marinette’s mind. The only thing she can focus on at the moment is the warmth of Kim’s breath on her face.
-The moment is ruined however, by a group of people jostling past them to get to their seats
-The movie begins shortly after, but both teens are distracted by other thoughts
-They head for the park afterwards
-They’re hearts stopping each time their hands bump into each other.
-Ondine finally gets fed up and texts Kim to hold hands with Marinette
-Kim looks around in confusion, unsure where Ondine was watching them from
-But he does what she says
-Marinette looks up in surprise
-“We’re on a date, so we should hold hands, yeah?” Kim says with a blush.
“O-oh! Right, yes!”
-Both of them look away and blush
-Their conversation on the way to the park is a little awkward as neither of them are sure what to say until Kim blurts out, “By the way, I think Ondine is stalking us.”
-This launches them into a game of “spot Ondine without her noticing.”
-They fail miserably, completely unable to find her
-But they have an amazing time guessing where or who she might be
-Each time their guesses get more and more ridiculous
-Which has them laughing uproariously in the middle of the park
-This garners the attention of several people, in particular a blonde model who is in the middle of a photoshoot.
-Kim walks Marinette home, and, unable to stop himself, kisses her on the cheek before leaving
-Marinette can only stare at Kim’s back as he leaves
-Half an hour later, her mom opens the door to take out the trash, and scares Marinette out of her reverie
-Marinette is supposed to confess to Adrien the next day, but when she goes to bed the only person she can think of it Kim
-(she dreams about him too)
-The next day, Marinette asks Adrien to stay behind after class so she can ask him something
-Kim and Ondine wait anxiously outside the classroom
-Kim is torn between excitement for Marinette and heartbreak for himself
-in the classroom, Adrien gazes at Marinette expectantly
-He’s not sure what she needs from him, but he’s ready to help
-Marinette breathes in deeply, mentally preparing herself utter the three simple words.
-But they don’t come out.
-They can’t come out, and Marinette realizes with shock that it’s not because she’s nervous.
-In fact, she doesn’t feel anything at all except a sense of wrongness
-For some reason, the only person she can imagine confessing to is Kim
-her eyes widen as the realization sets in
-She doesn’t like Adrien anymore
-She likes Kim
----
AN: There we go! The long awaited Part 4 is finally up a year later. Don't worry, part 5 won't take as long. Though, it probably won't be up until after I finish finals and move home.
I didn't intend for Ondine to have such a big role, someone mentioned that I forgot about Ondine in the last part, and I slapped myself for forgetting her, so I made sure to start with her and then it just snowballed until she was part of the crew lol.
Also, I discontinued the taglist because it got too big and I got overwhelmed.

ESSYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY how bout.... Trashbrigade :>?
Heya ael bb ❤❤❤ and fyuck yeeess them trashbrigade boys yeeesss! For those who don’t know the ship its between my trash boi Rus and Ael’s Edentale pap called Violet aka Vio, which you can read up about over at @edentale but warning its 18+ only and its really dark and messed up af u have been warned! But here goes trashbrigade yuuss
also WARNING for very suggestive sheit below and some unhealthy sheit etc
who’s the cuddler: both are but Rus is just a tiny bit more, he clingy and needy af, and will be cuddling, cling and feel Vio up every chance he gets which Vio don’t mind at all, he loves it. They are constantly standing close whenever they are together, which is almost always, lots of cuddles on the couch, in the bed, while they working like literally all the time bc Rus is one touch starved hoe who just can’t get enough of Vio at all, as Vio is his and he is Vio’s, and they also constantly end up fucking like everywhere much to the much needed bleaching of eye sockets for the rest of the fam who have at least walked in on them fucking way more than once, and there are just some things that cannot be unseen.
who makes the bed: neither of them, they both are extremely fucking messy disasters and never cleans like anything, their shared room is more like a storage filled with so much shit, which mostly belongs to Vio as he leaves his stuff every fucking where its a miracle he even knows where it is, and Rus has never cleaned in his entire life so yeah no cleaning or making the bed for these two, and the only time their sheets gets actually changed is when one of the more cleanlier family members braves to get into their so called room that is more like a damn war zone of filth and clutter everywhere.
who wakes up first: technically Rus as he don’t sleep much at all, though the longer he is with Vio the more he ends up sleeping, as with been with Vio been needed and loved it gets better, so Vio prolly wakes up first. As Vio runs a carpentry shop which he needs to actually go and work at, even tho he got his own hours as in reality he didn’t really need to work since his younger brother El is the Lord Executioner and got way too much fucking money, so often times Rus gets Vio to stay in bed where they cuddle for hours and fuck allot until someone from the rest of the fam has had enough of hearing their too loud fucking moans.
who has the weird taste in music: Rus, as Vio is not that much of a music guy due for in Eden there isn’t any music except for those from festivals, the church and theatre/opera, so he haven’t really gotten to listen to any like “normal” music. Rus on the other hand listen to metal and stuff darker music bc he angsty boy tho his fave is asmr, which Vio finds kinda weird and not his thing.
who is more protective: Both are, they are very super protective the both of them when it comes to each other, very possessive and hella easily jealous. Like their whole start of their “romantic” relationship started bc they were like assholes/frenemies(?) with benefits etc and then Vio becoming insanely jelly when he found Rus fucking his bro, Rus and Vio were not exclusive at all btw, which resulted in Vio fucking Rus and fucking him up really fucking bad in possessive rage because Rus is his and he does not fucking share, and Rus loving it bc he finally felt he was properly wanted etc.
And then their whole making each other jealous so to make the other get angry and possessive enough for some great brutal smexings they kept on doing for awhile after that until slowly but surely Vio’s feelings began to change to actual love and Rus being all too happy to be loved ofc returned them feelings and they became softer and more happy, both becoming a tad bit obsessed with the other its not the healthiest of relationships but its works for them they are trash boys for a reason pfft.
So yeah hella protective the both of them its crazy af, srs they would murder ppl for each other if needed be etc.
who sings in the shower: neither, Vio because he just isn’t into music, do hum at times while working tho, but otherwise nope. And Rus don’t sing either its just not his thing, unless its to piss someone off etc, but they do sing a completely different kind of song while showering together if u know what i mean pfft.
who cries during movies: Vio, because there aren’t any movies and stuff in Eden there isn’t that kind of technology there and also its very strictly controlled tech access anyway, so when Vio is introduced to it thanks to Rus coming from Swapfell he at first finds it weird but after getting used to it he gets hella emotional watching them as he gets really into the stories. Rus just don’t get emotional over movies at all, but he is all too happy to comfort Vio when they watch stuff, getting in a grope here and there and just maybe get Vio to fuck him right then and there if he is lucky like the horny af trash he is pfft.
who spends the most while out shopping: neither, Rus because he just never have any fucking money, tho since he actually ends up getting a job later and then finally gets some money he do get to spend some more money on shit, not allot tho as he mostly just spend it on cigarettes, food and gifts for Vio most of the time ye. Vio on the other hand he used to be hella poor as a kid, so he is very careful about his spending and he keeps record books to make sure exactly how much he has and so much as he is also a business owner ye, so he gotta be very careful about money in general.
who kisses more roughly: they are both very, very rough kissers so its a tie. They are often kinda violent while they fuck so rough kisses is the norm, but as their relationship progresses they become more soft which is like weird for the both of them but its something they end up liking hella lot, so rough kisses gets a little bit less frequent but not as much as they still are very rough most of the time ye.
who is more dominate: Vio, he’s the one who doms most of the time and also mostly doms the whole relationship, which Rus is all for he loves to be dommed af after all, even tho Rus in reality is very dominaty himself, he could real fucking easy take control if he so wished, but he is all too happy to let Vio to dom him and be the one who decides shit and so on, like Rus do decide stuff on his own ofc but Vio mostly have the final say and Rus do get to dom time to time but he is all too happy to just have Vio have his way with him all the time, as it makes him feel wanted and needed and so loved.
my rating of the ship from 1-10: 11/10 af!  I love our two trash boys so flipping much like srs gkjejgkegkjjkeg they are such fucking shits and its so amazing that they go from assholes/frenemies with benefits, to possessive af assholes who keeps making each other jelly just because bringing out the worst in each other, to actually falling properly in love, starting to bring the best out of each other instead and then truly caring for each other even though its a very, very obsessive kind of love and is in reality pretty unhealthy but its what works for them and they both end up fucking happy af with each other UwU ❤ and talking about them with you and talkin about the rest of the fam we have made around them is one of the best things I know and makes me so happy like srs ael ily and I love our boys so much they are shitty af but god so good ❤❤

↬ i just wanna free somebody.
date: early 2019.
location: n/a.
word count: 1,641 words not including lyrics.
summary: n/a.
notes: creative claims verification for free somebody.
it begins at the start of the new year in the confines of an old bc entertainment studio that ash is very familiar with. he wants to try writing something different than anything he’s ever written before. that’s what he tells his producer friend (can he call him his friend yet? senior? colleague? colleague sounds best).
well, he wants to write a lot of things different than what he’s every written before, but he has to start with something, he expands in the low light of the studio. he can’t pump out an endless stream of creatively challenging songs just because he wants to. ambition is a taste he’s come to enjoy again, after years of lacking it, in the form of song creation, but it won’t do well to bite off more than he can chew.
it feels like he takes too big of a bite anyway. a few sessions with other producers and composers go by with only stray scraps of songs to show, most of which hadn’t been contributed by him, and ash starts to doubt his own ability. he’s not at the point where he can reinvent the wheel, he laments on one late night (not that time is easy to tell within the dark, soundproof rooms of the studio unless he pulls out his cellphone to check its digital clock) and the producer he’s found to keep him company one night looks at him silently from across the room.
“you’re being stubborn again.”
ash pauses and shakes his head in confusion. he wants to ask what the hell that means, all he’s been doing is trying to expand his horizons which, honestly, is pretty much the exact opposite of being stubborn, but he has too much respect for the other man to argue with him so forwardly. “i’m not trying to be stubborn,” he says instead. he rubs at his eyes and sighs as he stretches his arms over his head in an attempt to drag the fatigue closing in on the corners of his mind out of him. that never works, no matter how hard he tries to turn the metaphorical literal.
“if you want to make something different, it doesn’t have to be something no one’s ever heard before. you’re not going to have much luck with that. the human race is hundreds of thousands of years old and we’ve been making music for a lot of our existence. i’d bet nearly all of it if i was a wagering man. you’re not going to create something completely new and that’s not our job. challenge yourself instead of challenging the entire history of mankind and our artistic accomplishments. you like to act like you can handle every single task you put on your checklist, but you’re one person, taeyong. start acting like it.”
ash nods and he feels like he’s been scolded. he’d known he wasn’t going to be able to create an entirely new invention in the form of a song, but he’d let the reminder of that slip away in his singular vision of wanting to create something groundbreaking instead of more of the same he’d become known for. besides, this is the idol industry. ash loves pop music, but the bc entertainment studio wing isn’t going to be the site of any breakthroughs to change the entire course of music history any time soon. he’s deluding himself if he pretends like it is. there’s ambitious optimism and then there’s an utter lack of self-awareness and ash doesn’t want to wind up as that person too far up his own artistic ass to see the difference.
his ballads have more often than not been the work bc has dubbed satisfactory without as much reworking required, so ash promises himself to stay away from those in his mission to step outside of his comfort zone. but still, it would be pointless to expect himself to create a genre he has no experience making. ash kwon’s attempt at death metal or polka would be a disastrous way to start a new year.
ash spends a few hours listening through the depths of his music library and jotting down ideas for genres and styles he doesn’t find himself creating as often to bring up in the next writing session with some of the other producers. upbeat pop becomes a common theme of what he hasn’t been writing recently. that doesn’t surprise him. ash doesn’t often finish the songs he begins writing that fit that descriptor, as his own sound leans far from upbeat. it wouldn’t fit for one song out of an entire album track list to be a bright party song, and that isn’t what most people he’s worked with come to him to write for them either.
when he sits down with that in mind, he hums through melodies and taps out rhythms with a pen on his desk until he finds ones that grow into a longer form that he transposes onto his computer. it turns into a funky instrumental, a retro 80s dance take (ash is inspired by a uk house song he stumbles upon on one of his forgotten playlists) mixed with enough modern electronic pop to push him beyond the basics. the other composers and producers he brings in to help him throughout the process have to come in to keep him from making the song melancholic or subdued even when the production thins out during the chorus for what he imagines to be a strong powerhouse vocal lead. making it, he knows this won’t be a song for him, and he’s not sure it’ll ever find its way to release by anyone else either — he can’t see any of the usual people he shows his work to seeing it, quite frankly, and he thinks its value would be depleted if it were to be done as a group song—, but that’s something that had been on his list of new year’s resolutions — sell some songs off instead of gifting them to build his profile as a songwriter.
the near-final demo version of the instrumental is decided on among all of the producers and ash asks if he can try to write the lyrics to it. he’s inspired by what they’ve all created together and he wants to write its lyrics too. they agree, and ash spends a few days in his studio dedicating himself to nailing down lyrics. he has an idea of what he wants the words to encompass thematically; the first word that comes to mind when he listens to the song is freedom. ash can envision the song being played at a huge open air music festival mid-spring. thanks to becoming a trainee at thirteen and an idol at sixteen, ash hasn’t been to any of those sorts of festivals, but he does have a glamorized notion of what they’re like in his head.
after a few rough drafts, ash stumbles upon a phrasing that burrows its way into his heart. i just wanna free somebody. it’s a notion ash instantly circles and underlines among the mess of more easily disposable ideas that lean more obviously romantic in nature. freeing somebody is certainly worthy of being a romantic notion and ash plays with that as he scribbles out more ideas that build an image of a relationship, one that’s purposefully vaguely anywhere between a one night stand and soulmates. the specifics of that don’t matter in the context he’s writing because, in his mind, the two people involved don’t care anyway.
when that near-final draft lays in front of him, though, he’s struck again with the feeling that he’s playing it too safe and not stepping outside of his norm. love. wow, that’s a new topic for you, ash, he mentally derides himself.
it’s a few nights later when he’s hard at work on a different song, one that’s supposed to be for his next album but doesn’t feel anything like him that he writes a lyric that pulls his mind back to the track he’d been working on previously.
i hope that you find your true self.
he tacks on the hook to see how well it works in his head before committing to it fully.
i wanna free somebody.
of course that’s the path he could take the song down instead. the other song is quickly abandoned as ash returns to his aptly-named “free somebody” draft. he keeps the verses and most of the chorus, but scraps most of the pre-chorus and fits in the new line in place of what had previously been a repeat of a truncated take on one of the chorus lines. he reworks the parts he’d trashed to fit his new vision better. at other parts, he removes lyrics from entirely and goes back to make the instrumental synths more compelling to stand on their own. music is already freeing; ash can attest to that himself as someone who would rarely use the word free to describe himself.
the first drafts of the song had suffered by being weighed down by ash’s instinct to inject romantic storytelling, but this time, he doesn’t need a full story. he focuses on the goal of freeing somebody for the length of a song instead and it can be a romantic freeing, yes, that is clear from the parts he keeps, but it can simply reflect the goal of the song itself too.
he records his own voice for the demo though he thinks he’s unable to do it justice due to not having the sort of female powerhouse voice he sees singing it one day, but when he gets the news the song has been sold off to gold star media, he lets a small bud of hope blossom that it’ll wind up in the hands of someone capable so it can see the light in all its glory one day. its message had really grown on him.

Momojirou?? For the ship thing ( ´ ♡ ` )
please send me a ship and I will tell you
HOLY SHIT ITS BEEN 2 WEEKS SINCE U SENT ME THIS I AM SO SO SORRY. I just really really really love them & knew I had to do right by them and I had to give myself a break from writing bc I’ve been doing so much for school. Nevertheless, I present to you momojirou.....
who’s the cuddler: Kyouka!!! and honestly who blames her. Yaomomo is so much taller than her & makes the perfect big spoon, plus shes just so soft and her hair is so nice and fluffy kyouka doesn’t even mind when it tickles her face. Cuddling is a constant in their relationship and typically what 1 on 1 studying devolves to.
who makes the bed: Kyouka, because Yaoyorozu has apparently never made a bed in her life as she always had maids do it for her growing up. She didn’t even know how to change her own sheets until she moved into the dorms and Kyouka had to help her when she was doing her laundry for the first time. Tragic, truly, but Kyouka takes pity on her because she knows how yaomomo feels about not immediately being the best at everything, even new things.
who wakes up first: Yaoyorozu!! That girl’s hair takes waaaayyyyy to long to do every morning. It's a curly tangled mess when she wakes up and it probably takes her a solid half an hour to 45 mins and about 6 different products for her to get it back into that slick ponytail.
who has the weird taste in music: Depends on what you define as weird. Yaoyorozu is the exact stereotype of every rich kid ever when it comes to music and prefers listening to classical music when she studies because it's easy for her to get in the zone too, she also plays the piano. When she isn’t studying though she just listens to the playlists Kyouka makes her because they make her heart all warm and fuzzy and remind her of Kyouka and yeah all that cute gushy shit.
Kyouka, on the other hand, can listen to some real heavy metal shit. She listens to a little bit of everything. EXCEPT COUNTRY BC HONESTLY NO THANKS, SHE WAS RAISED RIGHT. But other than that she likes techno, pop, alternative, indie, punk, and classic rock. Although angsty girl bands/artists and new wave punk and punk-pop are def in her wheelhouse. Some of her favs of today are Haim, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the front bottoms, fall out boy (old & new tbh), Lights, Tegan and Sara, Chvrches, Sky Ferreira, FIDLAR, and KANA-BOON. (this is totally me self-projecting just a lil, also these are all on the playlist I made her lmao)
who is more protective: Kyouka. Boy oh boy is that girl smol but will fight anyone and everything on the planet to protect her tol tol gf. Kyouka has a lot of anger that she typically keeps inside and only lets out through music or when she's training, but a good way to test her temper is to make Momo upset in any capacity. She 100% has fought Bakugou (& won because I fully believe she could kick his ass if she wanted to) for calling Momo “ponytail”
who sings in the shower: Yaoyorozu! She showers at night (because it would honestly be way too annoying to shower in the morning w/ her hair) so the stalls are never occupied and she normally has the whole girls bathroom to herself! Shes always singing little bits and pieces from songs Kyouka has shown her that get stuck in her head.
who cries during movies: Kyouka, that girl is a big softy at heart, and any movie with a killer soundtrack that just really hits you in the heart is guaranteed to make her cry. Toy story 3? Weeping. When Groot “dies” in Guardians of the Galaxy? Puddle o tears. Katniss singing to Rue in the Hunger Games? Don’t even LOOK at her.
who spends the most while out shopping: Yaoyorozu, no surprises here. The girl has very expensive taste, I mean you did see what she did to her dorm room right? I imagine her closet is no different, she owns like 10 Chanel bags. It’s really not her fault though, she was just raised a certain way, and honestly, if Kyouka could afford it she would probably buy sound/music equipment every day. Not to mention a new guitar sounds nice.
who kisses more roughly: Kyouka and this poor girl is not very good at it. LISTEN, she just loves Yaoyorozu A LOT. Like, a lot, a lot. And every time she looks at yaomomo’s perfect little face she just wants to smooch her. And maybe she’s a little rough about it sometimes because maybe, just maybe, she’s not the most delicate or graceful person in the world. She just wants her girlfriend to know how beautiful she is and that she loves and appreciates her and wants her to believe in herself the way Kyouka believes in her.
who is more dominate: Kyouka, although not by much. Yaoyorozu lacks the confidence to be the more dominating one but she is very blunt with what she wants because her relationship with Kyouka is her first so she doesn’t know any other way to be. Also, she is just a very organized person in general so she is always planning out all of their dates well in advance and fitting in extra study time or hang out time with Kyouka into her schedule.
Kyouka, however, is straightforward because she wants to be. She wants Yaoyorozu to know how much she loves her and appreciates her and thinks she could be the #1 hero if that's what she truly wanted. But also Kyouka is great at communicating. She can sense when things are off with Yaoyorozu and isn’t afraid to ask her about it or give her her space when she needs it.
my rating of the ship from 1-10: *promptly inserts 10 million different heart emojis* UM I WOULD DIE FOR THEM. They are by far my fav bnha ship. I give them a 100000000/10. And just for the record, there are NOT enough momojirou fics out there friends, I would know bc I have read every single one of them folks (if u want a recommendation list just slide right back into my asks my dudes). My #2 ship is Kiribaku in case u were wondering (although they are very very close to being tied for #1) and then I probably would tie tododeku & tsuchako at 3rd place and Miritama at 4th. After that, I don’t even know, probably like kamisero, erasermic, and naomight. Or myself and fatgum lmao don't look at me. I can’t possibly be the only one who lowkey highkey wants to bone fatgum right????

All Is Fair In Love and War
I actually wanted to post this on Valentine’s day. Last year. Whoops.
This is the PJO Au no one asked for. It’s also a mess, generation-wise. It has all gens mixed, bc why the hell not? No, really, I needed more half-siblings (I’m looking at you, Jazmín!)
Have fun reading!!!
Jazmín woke up with the biggest grin possible. But how could she not? Today was the best day of the year! And that included her birthday! While she changed into her knee-length dress with rose print, she checked her calendar. A big heart was drawn on the 14th day of February.
Valentine’s day.
Or the most important day of the year, according to her cabin. Oh, the Aphrodite kids just loved Valentine’s day. All the romance movies were on TV, everything was decorated in their mother’s colours and so many proposals were made and, of course, weddings officiated.
Silence hovered over the cabin, its other inhabitants still asleep. Jazmín had gotten up first since she still had to add a few things for Alexia’s birthday celebration. She was a bit envious of her youngest half-sister. Being born on Valentine’s day, just how awesome was that?
As soon as Jazmín had placed the chocolate cake on the mahogany table, the ground floor of the cabin slowly filled with her half-siblings. “Morning,” Alaia chirped, being in a good mood as always. Her twin sister, however, looked a bit drowsy. “I binge-watched Riverdale,” Amaya revealed without being asked, yawning, “But all the couples were so obvious… I don’t know why I did that.”
Jazmín nodded, totally understanding her. Aphrodite children really did have a sixth sense when it came to relationships. They could always tell who was together with whom and predict with terrifying accuracy who would eventually get together. It made everything on TV sort of boring, Jazmín always knew which characters would end up together. Sadly, this power didn’t work on herself or her half-siblings. The only chance they had was to see if their couple instinct would kick in, showing them if their crush would end up with someone else. It really sucked, Jazmín knew that from experience. She still wasn’t completely over the eldest son of Hephaestus. Oh, she had been so miserable, but she just had known that it would only end in tears, because Simón would eventually get together with Ámbar in the future.
Said daughter of Nemesis, of course, always dismissed this feeling as a “freak love hallucination”, insisting that it would never happen. Yeah, Jazmín had heard that a few times before. And where were they now? Busy being married to the person she had predicted. See? Her couple instinct was never wrong.
“It’s because you’re single,” her younger half-brother, Manuel, joked. “Maybe I should start playing cupid for all of you once the competition is over.” Amaya shot him an annoyed look.
“Oh, please do,” Alaia begged, obviously tired of being single. “I’ll help,” her other, much younger, half-brother Diego yelled, quickly making his way over to the table. Eloísa and Mia walked right behind him. “Where’s the birthday girl?” Mia, the only brunette among the girls asked. Godly DNA was really strong. Only she and Manuel didn’t have the fiery red hair. And all half-siblings shared the same brown eyes, no doubt inherited from Aphrodite.
But Jazmín did find it funny that the only two brunettes both had a name that started with M. Had her mother planned that? Since the two were a few years apart, the oldest child of Aphrodite decided that it was just a coincidence. “I’m here,” Alexia yelled excited, more or less sprinting through the opened door.
Jazmín’s eyes met her half-siblings before they all started to sing Happy Birthday to the youngest member of the cabin, Manuel and Diego dramatically singing off key for entertainment. “Guys, this is serious,” Jazmín nagged the sons of Aphrodite, looking a bit appalled at Manuel, as he was older and should take this much more seriously. It was her last year at Camp Half-Blood and he would definitely be the next counsellor, as that position always went to the oldest member of the cabin.
After Alexia had received a hug and birthday wishes from all of them, they distributed themselves on the various sitting bags across the room, Jazmín taking her place on the red love seat, already having pen and paper in hand.
“It is time. There’s a few though ones here, but don’t worry! I’m sure, we’ll get them together in no time, “Jazmín started, totally in her element. “Maybe Mom can give us some pointers when she visits,” she smiled.
“Oh, she already did,” Alexia said, looking a bit remorseful. “She did?” Jazmín asked, smile fading a little, unable to keep out the disappointment in her voice. Everyone got 10 minutes of Mom time on their birthday, but Jazmín had hoped to get a glimpse, or maybe even a few words, from Aphrodite. “Yeah, that’s why I took a little bit longer,” Alexia said, looking at the ground, “She’s really sorry, but you know how busy she is.”
“Yes, especially today,” Eloísa’s tone was bitter.
“Anyways,” Jazmín continued quickly, not wanting this to ruin the mood, “We’ll form pairs and every pair will get two couples. The more experienced of us will get the, well, more difficult cases.” So, they had a few hours for each couple, that should suffice. And they wouldn’t intervene with each other’s couples. It had happened in the past and really was a waste of time. “Okay, Manuel and Diego form a pair,” she read the parings aloud. “Yes,” the boys high-fived each other. “Mia goes with Alaia, Amaya and Alexia are a pair, and Eloísa is with me,” Jazmín smiled, pleased with her selection.
“No,” Eloísa groaned, her plan had been to somehow disappear during match-making, but now that she was stuck with her oldest sister there was no way she could do that.
Jazmín ignored her, beginning to tell everyone their couples. When she named the second couple for Manuel and Diego, she was met with protest. “They’ll kill us, or at least use as sparring dummies, if they find out what we’re doing before we’ve actually succeeded,” Manuel exclaimed loudly, “Which is a very strong possibility since one of them is literally the child of the goddess of deceit!”
"Good luck with that,” Alaia snorted with laughter.
“Can’t we switch with someone?” Diego asked in a pleading tone, not being thrilled with the prospect of having to play cupid for the daughter of Lyssa and the son of Apate. To be fair, rage and deception was a hellish combo. But Jazmín did have her reasoning for giving them, especially Manuel, this couple. Surely, if they managed to bring Stella and Andrés together, he would gain new self-assurance, which would really help him next year, when she was off to college.
In the end, the couple distribution remained the same, her half-brothers clearly unhappy with it. Jazmín looked down at her list. If everything went according to plan Camp Half-Blood would have six new couples by the end of the day. She not only wanted to beat the Eros cabin, she also break the last couple record, which was five and had been set had three years ago.
If it was something Aphrodite’s children got competitive over it was match-making. It really showed with the competition they had with the Eros’ cabin, much to the dismay of the other campers.
The rules were simple: The cabin who had bought the most couples together by twilight won.
The couples in question were reaped from two bowls from each cabin. Sometimes a couple got drawn twice because the children of the love deities didn’t compare their choices.
All had started many years ago, when children of Eros had tried to play cupid too. Of course, the Aphrodite cabin hadn’t been amused, thinking the Eros kids tried to intervene with what they considered their business. Sadly, neither Chiron or Mr. D had been able to stop them. The read-head really would like to know what her mother thought about that. But if it bothered her Jazmín doubted this competition would have lasted this long. Who knew? Maybe Aphrodite and Eros watched them from above, having a good laugh.
Jazmín finally looked up again, a grin on her face, “Let’s bring these people together!”
~
Their first couple had been easy. Too easy actually. They hadn’t had done too anything drastic. Just spreading a rumour and suddenly those two love fools were finally talking about their feelings for each other. “That’s it?” Eloísa asked wide-eyed, gaze fixed on the two hand holding campers. “Seems so,” Jazmín answered, getting her list out of left pocket. Oh, how she loved this dress! It was already cute but the pockets made it 100 times cuter.
She crossed the first couple off the list, already eyeing the next one. This one was going to be more though. She knew the son of Hermes and daughter of Iris wouldn’t make it easy for them. But then again, she had thought that about Yam and Ramiro too. Maybe they should just try the rumour with Matteo and Luna too. All boys were the same after all. Just let them get wind of another boy liking the girl they’re interested in and all hell breaks loose.
She suggested it to Eloísa, who only shook her head. “Balsano would have a heart attack. And we get less points if we use the same method twice.” Right, Jazmín had totally forgotten that.
“We could lock them in?” she offered, as they searched for their couple. “How unoriginal is that?” Eloísa scoffed. If she had to spend her day doing this, it at least shouldn’t be so predictable. “It’s not,” Jazmín said, crossing her arms. Locking in was a true classic. It had worked on the most famous couples in and outside of camp.
“How long exactly will we waste our time watching them staring at each other?” Eloísa asked annoyed, just minutes after they had found them. “Until I have a plan,” Jazmín admitted. “You don’t have one? Great, just great,” the younger red-head crossed her arms, a disgruntled look on her face.
Well, it would be easier if Luna didn’t wear such a hideous outfit. Jazmín cringed visibly at the too many patterns and colours that didn’t match at all. Normally, children of Iris tended to be good with colour coordination. Just what had gone wrong with Valente? With all the layers she looked like a main character that escaped from one of those new, absolutely horrid, Disney shows her two youngest half-sisters loved to watch. How Mia and Alexia were so invested in those shows was beyond her. They liked to make their couples suffer, which Jazmín was definitely not a fan of. She especially couldn’t handle love triangle after love triangle.
Jazmín sighed loudly, this was giving her a headache. Maybe her style would get better if she dated Matteo. Oh, a girl can dream.
She focused back on Balsano, who had just received a pep talk from his best friend Gastón, a son of Apollo. It gave Jazmín an idea. “I’ll be right back,” she told her half-sister, not even bothering to wait for her reply.
“Hey, guys, how are you?” she greeted them. “I’m good, very good actually. Matteo not so much. It’s the nerves, you know?” The glare Matteo sent Gastón didn’t stop him from talking. He was more cheery than usual. Her brothers must have been successful with Gastina.
“I love giving advice,” Jazmín said. She really did. Just ask other campers. “Especially love advice,” she added with a grin.
“I don’t need you and your freaky love powers. I want to do this on my own,” Balsano said, crossing his arms. “Clearly, or you would have asked her by now,” Gastón pointed out. Jazmín couldn’t quite decipher on which side he was on. “Listen,” Jazmín tried again, “I only need to give you advice and when she say yes, it’ll get added to my couple number, really, what can it hurt? Just listen, okay?” Matteo sighed, but didn’t disagree. “Okay, be romantic but not too sappy. Finding a good balance is key,” Jazmín already advised.
“You don’t even know if she’ll say yes,“ Matteo remarked. "Please she will.” Gastón nudged him forward. Jazmín was really thankful for Perida right now. "Now, go get her,” he said with enthusiasm. The son of Hermes rolled his eyes, but made his way over to Valente.
Soon after Jazmín heard Luna’s excited answer. She pulled out her list, a big grin on her face.
Another couple down.
~
Not everyone did have such luck as Jazmín and Eloísa. “I’m pretty sure the Eros cabin tried to sabotage us,” Amaya voiced her suspicion during dinner. Jazmín frowned. She would have a word with their counsellor about that. “But did you get them together?” Alaia wanted to know. “Yes, we almost died, but we did it.” Manuel winced at Amaya’s words. “Well, once Stella and Andrés escape out of the armoury we’re definitely dead.”
“You locked them in?” Alaia asked loudly. “It seemed like the safest option,” Diego explained. “Such a classic move,” was all Jazmín said, sending Eloísa a grin, who just rolled her eyes.
“Hide me,” Diego said all of a sudden, ducking his head. Jazmín moved her head to the entrance of the pavilion, seeing a very angry Stella monitoring towards their table, Andrés just a few steps behind her. Whatever was the reason for his evil grin, she didn’t like it.
The daughter of Lyssa stopped, placing her hand on her table, eyes already murdering Jazmín’s half-brothers. “Any last wishes?” she asked, drawing with her index finger on the wood. It made all the Aphrodite kids uneasy.
“Let’s just get over with it,” Manuel sighed, having accepted whatever would follow already.
“Hm, yes, I could do that. Right now. Oh, but where would be the fun in that? All the anxious waiting would be over. No, I’m not going to do that today. Or tomorrow.” Her smile had become very twisted, it scared Jazmín. “No, I’ll do it when you’ll least expect it. Maybe in a year or two,” she chuckled, “the uncertainty will slowly drive you crazy.”
Satisfied with the shaking sight of Jazmín’s half-brothers, Stella continued talking, “Also no locking people in or trapping them in nets on next Valentine’s day!”
“Wait, that wasn’t us. The trapping people in nets thing, I mean,” her older brother clarified. “Yeah, right,” Stella said, voice full of scepticism. “Stella, they’re saying the truth,” Andrés stated, having heard no deceit in Manuel’s answer.
Confusion slowly replaced the anger on Stella’s face. “But who was it then?” she asked in Andrés’ direction.
“You actually thought the Aphrodite cabin is capable of doing something like that? I’m wounded!” a new voice said behind Stella. Jazmín knew this voice. Her expression darkened. Just what had the son of Eros done?
Stella turned towards Étienne, “Listen here, French fry-“ He interrupted the Italian, which earned him both a murderous look from her and Andrés. Jazmín would have actually squealed at that if this whole situation wasn’t so tense.
“No need to thank me,” the blonde said, “Oh, by the way. They kissed with our plan. So-“ Stella interrupted him this time. “Yes, because we would still hang in the air otherwise,” she hissed.
What exactly had the Eros cabin done to them? Sure, all was fair in love and war, but they had taken it way too far!
“Either way,” Étienne said, turning his head to Jazmín, “You lose!” Jazmín rarely wanted to fight, but right now she really wished she could throw her dagger at Sauveterre. Multiple times.
The Aphrodite kids eyed each other.
This meant war!

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey Review - Fall Of The Planet Of The Apes
Tumblr media
Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey sure isn’t afraid of throwing you into the deep end. My first foray into Panache Digital’s survival game began as a young ape alone in a dark forest, the imagined laughs of hyenas and snarls of tigers echoing in the trees in a confusing cacophony. Before I could finish reading the message detailing my very first objective, a warning popped up and demanded I dodge out of the way–of what, I couldn’t be sure. Not knowing what to do, I couldn’t respond in time, and my ape was left alone, scared, hallucinating, bleeding, and poisoned, my screen a milky display of dark green and shifting shadows. I had absolutely no idea what I was supposed to do or where I should go. I began to wander and, thankfully, about 30 minutes later I found the rest of my clan.
At first, I believed the entire ordeal was simply a poor start. As it turns out, that first journey through the confusion of a dangerous jungle, blindly limping in different directions in hopes of finding someone to help me, is a fairly accurate depiction of what your journey in Ancestors will regularly entail. My time with the game saw me suffer similarly disorienting fates over and over, testing me to figure out what I’d done wrong and then do my best to adapt. Ancestors prides itself on giving you as little information as it can and daring you to rely on your ingenuity and resourcefulness to survive. Though the game fulfills its promise to do the former, it fails to deliver a compelling reason as to why you’d even want to rise up to the challenge of the latter.
You play as a member of an ape clan in 10 million BC Africa, and you try to ensure your lineage continues through to two million BC–the time period archaeologists say our ancestors’ evolution finally transitioned us from ape-like beings into a new, more human species. To survive that long, you need to manage how much you eat, drink, and sleep while also steering clear of predators and taking care of injuries. As your life continues, and you interact with more aspects of the world, you grow smarter and acquire new skills, which you can then pass on to your descendants. Upon death, you take control of another ape within your clan and continue the process, striving to evolve into a brand-new, more human-like species before your entire clan completely dies out.
Every second of real-world time translates into a minute in-game–except during sleep, which speeds this equation up. Your in-game progress produces opportunities for further clan evolution to then jump ahead in time by months, decades, or millennia. If you or one of your clanmates becomes pregnant, for example, giving birth to a baby will cause you to leap forward 15 months. For significantly larger jumps in time, exploring as an adult with a baby on your back will allow you to accrue energy to further improve your neurological network and unlock new abilities, which then allows you to advance a whole generation and move time forward a full 15 years. A jump in generation can be followed by an evolution, which moves you to a new, calculated placement on the timeline that’s dependent on which advancements you make. Adapting your metabolism to new plants doesn’t give you as huge a boost, for instance, as learning to use rocks as tools. Evolutions push you ahead tens of thousands of years, providing the most efficient way of getting from 10 million BC to two million BC.
It’s definitely not easy, though, especially since your clan needs to sustain itself throughout those eight million years in a single lineage. Though your clanmates learn what you do in real time, losing an entire clan means you have to restart from a brand-new lineage and relearn everything you’ve previously discovered. If your clan dies after you’ve adapted to eating fish, for example, you’ll not only need to go through the entire process of reacquainting your diet, but you’ll have to teach your new lineage how to make fishing spears all over again. When it’s a few minutes of knowledge lost, it’s not that big of a deal. But when you’re losing hours of progress, it can be quite disheartening.
Instead of saving your skills and knowledge between runs, Ancestors records your progress by keeping track of how far you travel. Initially, you can only begin a new lineage on a cliff within a jungle. However, you can discover and unlock other starting points in the jungle, and even reach other biomes, such as a lake-filled swamp and arid savanna. Unlocking these new start points provides welcome variety–as each environment contains its own unique ecosystem of creatures and plants as well as its own set of weather-based challenges–but your primates always begin in the same clueless state. Even if you already know what to do, you’ll have to retrace your steps and go through the same motions over again to recreate the same conditions that pushed your ape’s neurological network to evolve to where you were in the game before your clan was wiped out–ideally with more of your clan intact this time so you can go further.

This gameplay loop can be immensely frustrating, and it’s one that gets more drawn-out the more you play. By my fourth lineage, it was taking close to two hours to retrace my steps and redo everything I had already had to relearn a few times already. There’s nothing in the game that allows you to recover from a failure and quickly rebuild what’s been lost, either, which is demoralizing when your downfall is your own fault and downright frustrating when it’s just bad luck. I’ve lost entire clans because of my own hubris, sure, but I’ve also lost a clan because, after going through an evolution, the game randomly spawned my clan next to a tiger’s den and there were no materials nearby to make weapons. I spent the final 15 minutes of that eight-hour run helplessly watching my entire clan be slowly devoured before needing to start over.
I couldn’t go back and try a different approach to escaping the massacre of that unfortunate run because there’s no manual save feature in Ancestors. The game saves automatically when you discover a new location or go to sleep, with each lineage tied to one save file. You can manually back up your save to your PC, but there’s no easy or straightforward in-game solution to help you avoid a punishing death.
What small satisfaction the game does provide is consistently ruined by violent predators, though the threat does lessen once you make it far enough into the neurological network’s expansive skill and perk tree.
Having to redo everything you’ve already done also keeps you from discovering new things–which is paramount to surviving and one of the few good parts of Ancestors. With practically zero tutorials, Ancestors forces you to be experimental in order to succeed. There’s joy to be had in bashing different items together to see what happens and then compiling and testing hypotheses. As much as I was frustrated by needing to redo the entire process of creating the aforementioned fishing spear in repeated playthroughs, I felt genuine accomplishment in figuring it out the first time. Most of Ancestors’ puzzles can be solved with logical sense, so the challenge comes in figuring out where to find the materials you think you need. Granted, this being a game, there are occasionally arbitrary hurdles you need to jump through to build certain tools, but you’ll typically only find these associated with more advanced, late-game tasks.
You don’t get to enjoy much of the satisfaction in discovering new things and regularly evolving, though. Predators repeatedly sneak up on you and interrupt your efforts, which typically causes you to drop whatever you were messing with. It’s disheartening to want to explore and forge new tools, only to then have to put your odyssey on hold to limp back to your clan and deal with your injuries–and then be attacked again almost immediately upon heading back out. Yes, the jungle is a dangerous place. But when a tiger leaps out of the reeds to aid a crocodile that’s trying to eat me, it’s a stark reminder of how Ancestors upholds the need to rise to the challenge of survival above the experience of evolution. Historically, it makes sense, as our ape ancestors undoubtedly lived many more years as prey than predator. But in the context of a video game, the constant barrage of spawning enemies gets in the way of the gameplay loop of learning, responding, and evolving–a roadblock that’s only chipped away at and eventually toppled once you acquire the skills and tools so that your entire clan can work together and put up an adequate defense against the creatures that hunt you. Much has to be done to get to that point, though, so contending with larger predators–especially the collection of deadly wildcats that stalk and pounce on you at seemingly every quiet moment–feels unfair early on, especially in areas where there are no trees to escape up into. Dealing with their near-constant attacks or the wounds they inflict can make it discouragingly difficult to actually experiment and evolve.
The closest you come to feeling safe while playing Ancestors is when you’re up in the trees. You spend a lot of time in the branches as a result, but unfortunately there’s no easy way to travel between them. You can climb practically anything in Ancestors provided you have the stamina, so scrambling up into a tree is a quick, painless process. However, with no way to easily course correct yourself–and since trees are rarely positioned in a straight line–you typically only get to enjoy a few seconds of fast-paced, energetic movement before you run out of branch, plummet to earth, and possibly break your legs if you were too high up. And that’s a shame, because it’s actually pretty fun to leap from branch to branch once you’ve got the swing of things. There just aren’t many opportunities to use what you’ve learned once you’ve got the mechanics down. Upon leaving the forest, your chances slim down even more, as the follow-up areas are sparse on the first environment’s signature large trees.
Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey lingers for far too long on its most toilsome aspects. The game does reward initial experimentation, but then asks you to repeat processes over and over again without any means of securing your legacy. It’s an absolute grind to reach the closest that Ancestors has to an endgame goal–survive for eight million years–and one costly mistake, whether the game’s or your own, can erase everything you’ve accomplished. What small satisfaction the game does provide is consistently ruined by violent predators, though the threat does lessen once you make it far enough into the neurological network’s expansive skill and perk tree. But as it stands, investing in Ancestors’ journey demands too much effort for too little reward.

a giant update!
 posted first here bc yolo
roadmap-
the stuff i bought from forever 21 today c:
other stuff i did today!
closing the chapter to january (the worst month i’ve had to deal with for awhile?)
things i look forward to in the future: march, april, may, summer.
oh my god i got really cute things from forever 21!! finally ordered a white/light grey windbreaker with swordfish pattern all over it for $20. also got white dolphin shorts (like dolphin style, not literal dolphins) with rainbow stripes on the side. and a dark-ish pink/blush off the shoulder dress with ties on the arm.. it’s kind of weird but was on sale for valentines day & idk how off the shoulder styles look on me... we’ll see ig! it’s really cute and flowy. and another dress, but maroon and long sleeve and floral, kind of in a baby doll fit. it’s lowkey mockneck so the reviews are like help i can’t fit my head through but .. hopefully it fits! there’s some really small lace parts on the sleeve :). and a white flowy vneck top with a bunch of pink flowers on it and a tie in the front. bell-ish sleeves with lace on the upper shoulders and parts of the back! oo and a light weight grey hoodie with kinda cheesy but still cool cool-toned floral embroidery on the hood. it’s p unique but the quality probably sucks and isn’t soft. lastly a peach mid-maxi skirt that has some sheer parts for the bottom half!! it’s like those ballet rehearsal skirts style.
okay clearly i really like dresses and i think i’m going to start wearing more pink/color because i’m totally over winter in general and how drab that season is. honestly just light warm colors that kind of are reminiscent of furniture fabric/granny aesthetic is totally my vibe. like i want to look like i don’t give a fuck, but not in an emo way but more in a.... idk. i actually don’t know how to explicate my vibe but its like laid back and californian and whatever. hypebeast/grandma/passionate napper/hiker/couch appearance :) also i’m really happy to just sorta word dump and get my thoughts out again because they’re finally good vibes and i feel super excited to share it with my ... laptop screen & whoever’s reading! like getting outta funks is so nice and lowkey reminiscent of a few months ago when i finally got over this stupid boy
anyway okay. today i woke up at 9-10ish because i slept at 3am yesterday :( i felt really weird (ig you can describe as anxious) because of something i did, and i tried to do that thing where i imagined trump spouting all the self hate/angsty vibes i was telling myself, but i didn’t really purge the angst all that much. also i had taken a nap after school + drank boba the day before... (and 2 days before then i slept at 2 bc i had half a cup of green tea in the evening...) also i got angry at myself that i couldn’t sleep because it’s just annoying. it’s 12 am right now and i didn’t take any naps today but i’ll definitely be content & ready to sleep after i right this. so after i woke up, i spent like a few hours cleaning out my room-- i fixed the organization of my desk drawers so it could be more efficient and less cluttered. also the night before when i couldn’t sleep, i hung up all my clothes so that was nice. then in the early afternoon, i finished math hw (literally had 2 problems left, one of which i didn’t know how to do....) and did some japan bowl studying! i also started chatting hella people to ask for interest regarding a possible speaker event that intersections (my social justice club) is hosting... it’s about asian american health disparities, so i got 9 total clubs interested??? now i gotta email the presenter to update them but i’ll do that tomorrow. then from 3-5pm i had a really fun japan bowl meeting that was super untoxic and just productive. this year we have less frequent meetings, but i think we spend the biweekly meetings with... healthier vibes. it’s a lot more fun, and honestly no amount of shame expedites self-studying better than just having a safe and nice environment. we did some practice rounds & i knew the answers to some questions!!! it was fun. i’ll definitely be studying more ahahah this week’s meeting was kind of a throw away but it was good bonding? we also did reading practice.
then i went on tumblr/online shopped/youtubed for 2 hours or smtg..then finished bio hw (3 sections of notes!!!!) while watching gaming streams after eating dinner. then chilled and took a shower, went on tumblr some more, and here i am now! i feel like i didn’t do much but whatever. it’s okay to be leisurely and like.. i just have a worksheet for aplac and a few emails to write tmrw, and i guess that’s it? chill weekend.
okay queue the giant cbt paragraphs:
january was a giant mess mainly because of tasp application... it’s hard for me to take the experiences that i know are invaluable in building my character, and trying to relay that in a effective, understandable way. it made me feel secure because it was almost like i was selling myself/commodifying my experiences, but i was doing it in the course of a 3-4 weeks. it was annoying when i got the diction and syntax just how i wanted it, only for my editor to be like no this is weird. it’s weird to have someone who doesn’t know you try to word your experiences and push you into a template. thank god said editor actually got fired and isn’t my college counselor-- now i have this really tall and goofy friendly white guy (who majored in sociology so you can imagine he’s not the typical yt).
another thing was just friend stuff, but not in a way that points a finger specifically to anyone, it’s just... junior year will literally suck the life out of people and push them to extremes. for me, when i needed support from my friends, it’s not like i could receive it-- partly this is just normal though because normally i don’t confide in them anyway because my life is pretty easy anyway. most of the time/100% of the time i’m initiating the how-are-you type thing and listening to rants and giving advice or playing devil’s advocate or trying to empathize and validate. and when i needed someone to do that for me, i didn’t know how to ask for it? and my friends wouldn’t have the capacity to care for me bc i don’t think they actually know the background of my problems that well. i mean only i really know that and that’s fine bc it’s not really practical for other people to take the time to (1) understand and, (2) care... also it’s not worth it to me to expend the emotional labor explaining to someone. so this really isn’t to sound self sacrificing, it’s just that i consciously don’t expect my friends to be my therapist, but since i have amateur skills & pretty decent emotional intelligence, i’m glad to take that role for my friends. this just blows up in my face every once in awhile when my own problems resurface or smtg and i just turn inward and whatever. thank god it’s over!!! that was basically my january.
someone i kinda know also had something really egregious happen to them. and i can’t talk about it bc i’m making this post public bc i want a record of this on my studyblr blog. anyway i was alone in helping this person with the egregious thing because it’s not the kind of thing i can share (it’s not my story) and also sharing the information can force people to do things that ... wouldn’t be favorable. the stress from that time made me really upset for a few days and i was so angry that the egregious thing even happened, and i’m definitely not the person to get angry.
also had to get my physical for track from this gross pervert of a doctor who uses a stethoscope to touch breasts :\ and i felt really disgusting and gross and it happened and just yuck so cringe ijaijsf don’t wnat to talk about it
ugh okay another thing that i recently came to realize is that fat is really underrated in attractiveness because flab plausibly makes for super comfortable cuddling? basically other than in the context of a fatphobic society (and this isn’t to thin shame), there’s nothing definitively more beautiful about sharp angles or hard muscles compared to soft curves? someone i sit next to in a class wears hoodies and sweatpants almost everyday and they just look like a pillow/perfect big spoon. okay but at the same time food angst and body image stuff is lowkey resurfacing, but in a really lowkey way against myself :(. part of the reason why i got angry last night at myself was because i didn’t like how i drank boba at such a late time, and how i was basically on a sugar high at 2am. so i’m trying to limit my processed food intake as a means of control. i’m pretty safe from relapsing into fullblown AN but a lot of shame associated with certain foods is still there. also i still dislike my thighs and back flab and i didn’t run hard enough to be ready for track and i feel really out of shape :(
a few days ago i went volunteering and was utterly exhausted and not in the mood of being understanding. i don’t think i was being impatient, but i was being more curt than usual when working with somebody. i was really annoyed and dwelling on my irritation and letting it consume me. on the car ride home, i was thinking through all the reasons why i could be so pissy, so i had to think through all this angst and grossness in january. i was always hoping that i was just pmsing when i was feeling especially down during that month, but i think the stress made me skip that month :\ so idk where my period or pms went but goddamn ig i was just especially moody that month if hormones can’t explain it lol
during january, intersections was passed and that was such a big victory. but i didn’t really care about it. i honestly didn’t even want to do anything for it or hope that i’d go well. part of insecurity for me is that i doubt myself so much (sUBCONSCIOUSLY, which is especially annoying bc idk what i actually feel half the time) that i get frustrated easily.
but the stress of the summer app and distancing myself from the stressful things has allowed me to recover, and i’m really happy and my normal self (which i’m really happy about!!!) i’ve literally been writing for 40 min so i’m going to start doing lists for the remaining stuff i said i’d write about
things i look forward to!
feb: planning for intersections, week of break = cramming for jbowl, light school work load
march: starting my club, leadership conference i’m part of, almost time for jbowl
april: jbowl!, spring break, api healthcare disparities presentation?
may: giant speaker event with an alumnus possibly?
summer: lead a free program for low income students around where i live? there’s a lotta red tape and logistics that come with this one though... will be thinking about it for a long time.
okay i’m sleepy bye

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey Review - Devolution Of The Species

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey sure isn’t afraid of throwing you into the deep end. My first foray into Panache Digital’s survival game began as a young ape alone in a dark forest, the imagined laughs of hyenas and snarls of tigers echoing in the trees in a confusing cacophony.

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey Review - Unfulfilling Journey
