If I remember correctly you created Machete around 2007-2008. But when did you create Vasco? (I'm sorry of this has been asked before, I couldn't find anything)

First finished pictures of Vasco are from 2018, but even before that I had been thinking it would be interesting if Machete had had one (1) romantic relationship in his youth before he was ordained. I just didn't have a name and design for him yet.

In the earliest sketches of Vasco, he first looked a little bit like a bordercollie, then like a spaniel or a setter. He had a darker color palette as well, sort of chestnut brown with white markings, but combined with the overpowering whiteness of Machete he looked kind of impassionate and drab, so I kept making him warmer and lighter until he became the golden boy he is today. The name came later, I just thought Vasco sounded friendly and charismatic. (Also the old finnish word 'vaski' means brass and bronze, and even if it's a tedious connection and doesn't factor into their canon at all, it felt too fitting to me personally and I had to go with it).

oh gosh, I WISH I remembered this - I don't reblog very much that isn't fanart, so I'm having a hard time recalling what post this would've been and what I might've said/added to it!

I don't think of Mark/Oliver as unrequited at all. That said, in The AM Archives specifically, we were not writing toward that ship - it wasn't the intention and we had no idea that Andrew and Kristian had that chemistry until we were recording the whole season all at once. And then we weren't sure if we were going to get another season at all! So there definitely was a period when I was more uncertain about it, mostly because it was unclear what the future would hold for any of the characters.

While they don't get together in The College Tapes, I do think that they very slowly figure things out in the months and years afterward. In the TCT planner (which is technically the last bit of canon that exists in the Bright Universe, in terms of timeline), there's heavy implications that they're living together - or at least spending a lot of time together - and I think all of us who made The College Tapes were thinking of them as a romantic ship when writing that show.

They both have buckets and buckets of trauma and unresolved issues (as did Mark and Sam - and their inability to work through it together/the way they first met and got together, etc. is one of the reasons they didn't ultimately work out) so I can't say what their future holds, but as far as I'm concerned, they're headed toward romantic involvement the last time we hear from them (or already there).

People actually valuing the things I do is so shocking and heart warming to me. Like I guess my only "skills" (listen I don't have the self esteem to call them skills whole heartedly yet) are things that are often abstract and awkward to put into words. Like I can... talk to.... people? But also I really care and I try to bring as much insight and understanding as I can to a conversation. Sometimes I can be confusing or pedantic because autism but yknow other than that. People have really been vocal about telling me how much they appreciate that about me and its just so strange to me. I can't believe I can be valued for something that I do naturally.

I don't know what's happened in Miraculous Ladybug after the New York special but I have a feeling they took Gabriel and made him even worse so if they did I am simply ignoring that and deciding that he stops being a little punk, asks Ladybug for help with Emilie, apologizes to Adrien and becomes the father he needs him to be and also Nathalie is able to heal both physically and emotionally from the whole "assisting in terrorizing Paris because she's to smitten to say no" situation that happened.

#Gabriel and Nathalie were the primary reasons I ever started watching Miraculous #And I feel like Gabriel had SO much potential in being an iredeemable-but-redeemed-anyway villain #And I am a SUCKER for an antagonist who's done horrible awful things #feel immense remorse for their wrongdoing and trying to correct it #I just think that Gabriel should have been the first Miraculous villain #and after he is redeemed is able to prove his remorse by fighting against another even bigger baddie #Like I have this whole story idea basically #Gabriel asks for help with Emilie. Ladybug has a moment of weakness because she sees the pain he is expiriencing #the wish very specifically is meant to revive Emilie and make it so that Hawkmoth never existed #But Emilie is even more sinister than he ever was so he has to actually reverse the wish #And set the timeline back to normal and deal with the consequences of his actions #And someone else comes up out of the woodwork with a powerful miraculous after a couple months #You know give everyone some months to process everything. Get some therapy. #Then Ladybug realizes that if they are going to fight this villain they need not only all the miraculous users #But an adult with expirience battling and can actually maintain the whole suit-form thing for a good while #And who fits that bill but Gabriel Agreste #Badabing Badaboom he has an Opportunity to prove that he truly regrets what he did #Say what you will about Gabriel #Im just a sucker for a good redemption story and I think that Gabriel could have had one of the most delectable ones since Zuko's #give adrien a good dad dang it #merkerler speaks #miraculous ladybug

wow okay then. finished the book, yelled a lot at el's sleeping inbox about it, may archive some subset of that yelling here later but. definitely that was. an experience i had. compellingly plotted, on the whole, although WOW was the denouement lurid, but. exTREMely long list of bones 2 pick as per previous posts (& also possibly forthcoming ones).

#like it became clear as things unfolded that our Fantasy Novel was really not very secretly a Mystery Novel also #or like. suspense thriller what have you #which i'm not at all opposed to but that meant Our Heroes became detectives which meant that in a couple of instances they became cops #(Interrogation Scene‚ also a very brief moment where an apprehended suspect mocks the protag so his husband jerks the guy around— #'[suspect] laughed‚ and was instantly punished with a swift jerk on his bound wrists by [husband]'—which. not cool actually!) #anyway. just wanted to jot that down somewhere before i lost track of it #anyway further notes later but i guess the tl;dr version is that there was just enough here to make me really mad abt its failings #a LOT of ethical concerns of various sorts signposted in a way i don't even necessarily expect from a text‚ only to then be fumbled #like fundamentally if your story has started out by raising issues of consent #you can't then turn around and say 'my protag is friends with his servant!' #without acknowledging that fundamentally the power dynamic of a master-servant relationship complicates if not precludes a friendship #not to mention that frankly the master absolutely does not TREAT the servant like a friend‚ he treats him as there for his own convenience #anyway. enough yelling for one post probably #i did learn a new word from the book‚ namely 'graunch' #i don't learn new words too often so that at least was exciting! #bookblogging
