Day 7, 8, 9, and 10 / Elaboration
Hey y’all! I said yesterday I would elaborate a little more on what my doctor’s visit yesterday told me, and here I am to do just that! I meant to yesterday, honestly, but by the time I got home my medicine had worn off and that wasn’t looking very likely 😅😅 But regardless!!! Here is what my results look like and honestly? These things probably have been affecting my sleeping disorder to a degree I’d previously disregarded without detailed info I’ve gotten from these tests.
Full write up under the cut!
—I got two major tests done, blood work and a genetics test. Back in my hometown the nurses couldn’t even figure out how to open the damn swab, but technology here managed to map out my entire DNA sequence which is utterly NUTS to me.
—My body is deficient in almost every important vitamin known to mankind, which makes sense because my diet is not… the best 😅 So, I started on several (SEVERAL) supplements to start out.
—I say start out because it’s very likely that I’ll be taking vitamin C and some liver enzyme through an IV once a month. A younger me might’ve thought something like this was scary, but at this point I’m so desperate to be healthy that getting nutrients drip fed into my system for them to work quicker sounds just fine to me.
—Other than that it’s normal lifestyle stuff. Eat more fruits and vegetables (I’ve been eating olives by the can for like days and I intend to buy fresh fruit packets for breakfast whenever I can afford them) as well as staying more active— which I DEFINITELY have been since I moved closer to New Orleans, in Louisiana proper where my dad lives.
But enough of the boring medicinal stuff. I’m sure you guys are much more interested in the whys— is there a reason my hypersomnia is so bad? Is there a deeper explanation than “lack of vitamins bad and you should feel bad”?
Well, yeah. YES. The genetics test revealed a metric fuckton to say the least 😂😂😂 but the most important was what kinds of diseases I’m predisposed to or how my body can process certain types of hormones/enzymes/proteins. Things like why caffeine won’t work for me (my body processes it very fast but not very thoroughly) or my metabolism being the strongest recorded genotype (which is why it’s been so hard to gain weight). Below, I’ll go into detail about stuff my new general doctor’s in-office geneticist (I still can’t believe that’s a thing I’m typing) has revealed about my disorder.
Naturally, this is specific to me because of my parents and our family lines. Maybe if you see info pertinent to yourself, looking into genetic mapping may be a good idea for you?
We are pretty confident that I have Idiopathic Hypersomnia. The reason for this is that a tiny link has been found between individuals who contracted mononucleosis in their childhood and adolescence and individuals who fell within the sleep cycles indicating IH. Now, IH will be genetic sometimes, but considering I’ve tracked my disorder to starting around 14, the same year I contracted Mono, the coincidence definitely doesn’t seem like… well, a coincidence. My blood test shows that I do in fact have the antibodies in my system, and they’re doing something… odd.
The geneticist found some “active” antibodies. Well, not some, really 😅 Basically, she’s surmised that these antibodies have a hair-trigger response and can react to any given environmental factor (stress, hunger, etc.) to the point where they activate as if they think they’re **fighting off a virus that’s been out of my system for ten years.** Of course this takes up an inordinate amount of energy, which is her hypothesis as to why my hypersomnia is so random and varies in intensity. The goal for this summer is flushing these antibodies out of my system.
My previous neurologist tried out a couple stimulants and then shit insurance prevented me from trying any others. So I’m stuck on something traditionally prescribed for adhd. A narcotic. *However* since my body is severely dysfunctional in general, the way I describe it is I basically have to induce a high to stay awake and function normally. We want to eventually get me off of these kinds of drugs, of course, since prolonged exposure weakens their effects and they’re highly addictive.
Another in credibly interesting thing we found is that I'm lacking in three major hormones. However, it's not because I don't produce them. I've never identified with symptoms of depression (anxiety, certainly, but not depression) yet for most of my life my childhood general practitioner insisted I had it. Well, the geneticist found that while I'm lacking in serotonin, dopamine, and melatonin, which yes are the two major mood enhancers and then the hormone that induces sleep, it's not because I can't produce them. It's because my neural transmitters are so damaged from a less-than-good diet and years of exhaustion that they simply can't process them. Just as the antibodies can have a hair-trigger response to environmental factors, so too can these processors. Simple things like a good meal, my high from my stimulants, or even micro dopamine shots from getting things done can activate the transmitters. Another thing on the docket for the summer is fixing these permanently with treatments of vitamins and supplements.
My stimulants have caused appetite issues, unfortunately, and that plus Covid at the beginning of this year caused me to get down to my lowest recorded weight ever, 94 pounds, which I haven't weighed since before I hit my final growth spurt way back in middle school. My dad does physical labor (he's a contractor who frames houses in the humid heat of the Deep South lol) so he's used to feeling tired. When he caught Covid, he said that he'd never felt as tired, drained, or out of it in his entire life. He never gets sick and hardly goes to the doctor and NEVER takes off work because of health, but in his last few weeks before full recovery he had to take off early multiple times. He was floored when he described the brain fog and exhaustion and I told him that I had no idea I even had Covid, because I just thought it was my disorder acting up. It was only when my grandmother started feeling tired that we got tested and we tested positive.
All that said, we think that there's hope for a future for me. She said that while there's no cure for IH, the cause that I have may can be mitigated by changes in exercise, diet, routine, and medication,to the point where I may mitigate symptoms of my disorder entirely. I'm still setting up appointments with a new neurologist here in the city, though, because technology is of course more advanced here.
And again, taking all of this into consideration, while it was looking likelier by the day, we've both agreed that I'll be here in the city 'til New Years. Which means no school this semester, but if I can go back in spring at more than 20% functionality and maybe succeed, I'm perfectly fine having to remain on break.
However, another good update: I weigh 103 pounds! I'm steadily gaining weight-- which means the other medication, the one for my appetite, is working as it should and as long as I stay on-track I should reach my goal of 120 by the end of the year as well.
So, yeah! That's what it's looking like. I have another appointment to go more in depth with the results tomorrow, but for now I'm planning out my week since I decided to let myself rest all last week. I'd love to finish helping out for our current podfic, ACTUALLY start the damn 100 Theme Challenge (LOL), finish betaing something that's been on hold for months, properly reconnect with our discord, catch up on all the media I fell behind on, clean my damn room, and establish a budget for this week on what I can buy. A more specific plan for today will follow, but til then, I hope this gives everyone some insight on what I'm looking at and how I'm gonna try to fix it.
Xoxo

Just Friends| Part Three
Timothée Chalamet Imagine: Part One Part Two Part Four Part Five
Female!Reader, Dancer/Actress!Reader, CoStar!Reader, FrenchSpeaking!Reader//4713 Words
Summary of parts one and two// Reader and Timothée are best friends. They are going to be costars on a new movie where Y/n plays a dancer and has a small, but still important, role, and Timothée’s a lead. There’s a storm and Y/n’s hotel is having issues, so she has to stay in Timothée’s apartment. Timothée and Y/n are super close, share some cute special moments, but not as anything more than friends.
Warnings// Grammar/spelling and lack of proofreading, not gonna lie, this ends kinda angsty, just pain. P A I N. um, self-deprecating thoughts if you really squint, I’m sure sure much else, cute banter with Timmy, Zendaya and Ansel being epic friends
Key: French writing (english translation), Y/n/n-Your nickname, Y/f/n-Your first name, Y/l/n-Your last name
(Added July 2020) Note: this whole series was written before Ansel Elgort’s allegations arose, and honestly, in the most disrespectful way possible: I hope he rots in hell. I ALWAYS stand with the victim, and if that’s going to be a problem, find another series to read. If the mention of his name is triggering to you, PLEASE do not read. If you or anyone you know has been sexually assaulted or abused, do not be afraid to speak up, but if that’s not the route you personally want to take: you can call 1-800-656-4673, available 24 hours every day and 100% confidential.
Not my gif: enjoy :))))
Tumblr media
It was your last week in the most romantic city in the world, you’d had a couple of interviews, photoshoots, autograph signing events, and you were worn out to be honest, but luckily, you’d have had Timothée on your side the entire time.  It was early in the morning, you were sitting on the couch, swirling around a glass of water when your phone rang and you picked it up.
“Remember that French talk show Timothée was on last year?”
“Hello to you too Kelsey...,” you could practically feel her glaring at you through the phone, “the one he went on when he was promoting Call Me By Your Name?”
“Yes and Beautiful Boy, that one, it’s called Quotidien.” you snickered and choked on your water at her pronunciation.
“Quotidien, it means daily, Kelsey.”
“Whatever, anyway they want to do an interview with you and Timothée, and then some kind of photoshoot, I’m not sure, I’ll send you the information once I get it.”
“Okay, sounds good.”
“Have you talked to Kelly today?”
“Yeah, like twenty minutes ago.”
“She told me Julia was on set the other day, and she said Leighton was raving about you...” Julia was working in production on the movie, she was a good friend of Kelly, Kelly was considered your “assistant”, but since you think having an assistant is completely pointless, you just think of her as someone to talk to before interviews who also knows where you need to be at all times. As for Leighton, she was your choreographer. Someone you’ve heard of since you were a kid, an icon in the dance industry. You had only dreamed of working with her up until you got this role.
“No way, you better not be fucking with me right now.”
“Yes, way. She said and I quote, ‘Y/n? She’s the least of my worries, the easiest to work with...’”
“NO WAY. Kelly didn’t say any of that.”
“I’m serious, this is great, she thinks your great. This is good for roles in the future...you can probably count on her recommendation...” that was Kelsey all right, always thinking about the next thing. To be honest, the future had been the last thing you were thinking about.
“Alright, let’s not get ahead of ourselves.” You looked into Timothée’s room, his door open. You’d think you might’ve gotten used to early-morning Timothée by now. It’d been five weeks, and still it made your heart flutter to see him so early in the morning, his voice groggy, and his hair just a little messy. As if you and Timothée hadn’t already been close enough, the past five weeks had brought you even closer. Every night you switched off, he’d pick a movie, then you’d pick a movie. You’d have little midnight dance parties, where he’d commend you on your, as he put it, “exquisite music taste” and you’d attack him for having never really listened to Harry Styles. You almost killed him when he said his favorite song was Sign Of The Times. You thought back to the night before your first day on set.
It was almost midnight and you were starting to loose feeling in your left toe. Your skintight white tank top was holding onto your skin for dear life. You were barely sweating, you knew this turn sequence like the back of your hand, but you couldn’t sleep until you knew it was the best it could be. You’d moved the coffee table in the living room area of the apartment so you had enough space to practice, and you’d been repeating and repeating for hours.
“Can’t sleep?” Timothée had been standing in the doorway of his room, once again, you wondered how long he’d been standing there.
“I’m so sorry, did I wake you up?” you moved the coffee table back to the center of the room, right across from the couch and made your way over to him.
“It’s alright I couldn’t sleep anyway, wanted a glass of water,” you walked over to the kitchen counter and he poured you a glass as well, “You know, you really need to get some sleep.” He sat down next to you, rubbing your shoulder trying to comfort you.
“I’m just really nervous.”  you took another sip of your water, trying to ignore the feeling of his hand on your exposed shoulder.
“You’ve been practicing on and off all day, you’ll be fine, you’ll be great actually. I’ve seen you do those turn things so many times I practically have them memorized,” he playfully shoved you before leaving his chair and sitting his glass in the sink, “Get some sleep, I’ll see you in the morning.”
“Goodnight T,” you watched him walk back into his room.
“Goodnight Y/n/n,”
You walked into Timothée’s room and laid down on the bed next to him, lightly shaking him until he woke up.
“So, they want us to do a French Interview...”
“Damn Y/n. No good morning Timothée, sorry to have awaken you...” he grabbed a pillow and covered his head, you snaked your way under the blankets to nestle yourself in his arms.
“Good morning Timothée.”
“Good morning Y/n.” He pulled his head out from under the pillow to look you in the eyes.
“We should eat.”
“Y/n, I cannot believe it’s been five weeks and yet you still won’t open the fridge yourself...”
“It’s not my apartment T,” you sat up and walked to the kitchen.
“You’re so fucking polite it kills me,” he groaned and got out of bed. He opened the fridge and grabbed some fruit, just like the first night.
“The talk show, It’s the one you did those two times, for Call Me By Your Name and Beautiful Boy...”
“I remember, that’ll be fun. The host is really funny.”
“Like you funny...or?”
“Oh. Okay. I see how it is Miss Y/l/n” he picked up a blueberry and threw it your face.
“You don’t wanna start this with me, Timothée,” another blueberry hit your face.
“Oh, I think I do...” you picked up a raspberry and threw it at his nose. It was a good thing a whole food fight didn’t break when Timothée’s phone rang.
“It’s Celine,” he mouthed to you as he walked into his phone to continue to talk to his publicist.
You wanted to slap yourself every time he looked at you. How is he real? How is someone so smart, so kind, so caring, and yet still so attractive. How is someone simply just perfect.
The next day, Timothée and you took a cab to the interview venue. You got your outfit picked out, a cute little dress, and your hair done. You were freaking out, to be honest. You were nervous more than usual interviews, hopping you didn’t screw up your French. You were makeup for the interview, that you were already losing your shit over. It was your last one before you had to head back to the city, where you were set to be working with another choreographer of your dreams, training for another show, the dance world never sleeps.
“Holy fuck, I’m really nervous.” You looked up at Kelly.
“Y/n it’s French television, calm yourself.” Kelly knew better than to actually try to calm you down after working with you for so long. Your makeup artist giggled and steadied your chin as she continued to wipe away the powder still on your face.
“Doesn’t change the number of people that are gonna see it...,” Timothée opened the door to your trailer and sat in a chair next to you.
“Êtes-vous prêt à aller?” (Are you ready to go?)
“No.” You glared at him.
“Come onnn. You’ll be fine. Votre maquillage est superbe.” (Your makeup looks great.)
“Merci,” (thank you) you turned to your makeup artist who had just finished up final touches, “he said my makeup looks great.” She gave him a quick thank you and you thanked her as well. Kelly came in and told you they needed you both stage left to get ready to go on.
When they called your names Timothée escorted you with one hand on your lower back as you made your way to your seats. You knew twitter was gonna loose it’s shit over that later. The host shook both of your hands and introduced you both to the crowd.
“Aujourd’hui, nous avons l’acteur Timothée Chalamet,” (Today, we have actor Timothée Chalamet,) he paused for applause from the audience, “et, nous avons la danse et l'actrice, Y/f/n Y/l/n,” (and, we have dancer and actress Y/f/n Y/l/n,) he held for applause once again, “Maintenant, Timothée, ce n'est pas ta première fois dans l'émission,” (Now, Timothée, this is not your first time on the show,) he smiled shook his head in agreement with the host. A picture of the movie cover for Beautiful Boy came onto the screen.
“Oui, j'étais là pour Beautiful Boy,” he smiled when he saw the picture. (Yes, I was last here for Beautiful Boy)
“Je m'en souviens parce que tu étais tellement inquiet pour ton français,” (I remember because you were so worried about your French) you laughed along with the audience.
“Alors, comment ça se passe depuis, rattrape moi?” (So, how’s it going since then, catch me up?)
“Je travaille sur quelques autres projets depuis lors. Nous sommes en fait, Y/n et moi, ici en train de filmer un autre film, je ne peux pas encore en révéler trop, mais ça avance bien,” (I've been working on a few other projects since then. We are, Y/n and I, actually here filming another movie, I can't reveal too much yet, but things are going well.) The interviewer then turned to you and smiled.
“Eh bien, Mademoiselle Y/n, bonjour. Comment avez-vous été?” (Well, Miss Y/n, Hello. How have you been?)
“J'ai été bon, merci, je suis très excité d'être ici.” (I’ve been good, thank you, I’m very excited to be here.)
“Oui, c'est votre première fois dans l'émission, nous sommes très heureux de vous avoir. Et vous parlez aussi couramment le français, n'est-ce pas?” (Yes, it’s your first time on the show, we are very happy to have you. And you also speak French fluently, is that correct?) Timothée turned to watch you as you spoke.
“Oui, je veux dire que Timothée a un meilleur français que moi, euh ... mais j'ai étudié tout au long de l'école, j'ai fait quelques années à l'étranger au collège, et ma grand-mère parlait couramment. Mais nous ne parlions pas vraiment français dans la maison, so c'est ne pas parfait,” (Yes, I mean Timothée’s French is better than mine, um...but I studied throughout school, I did a few years abroad in college, and my grandmother was fluent. But we didn't really speak French around the house, so it's not perfect,) you looked up to the audience.
“Cela me semble plutôt bien,” (It sounds pretty good to me,) you smiled and let out a quiet thank you as the host complemented you, “Pourriez-vous nous en dire un peu plus sur le film?” (Could you tell us a little bit about the movie?)
“Oui, donc je ne peux vraiment pas dire grand-chose,” (Yes, so I really can’t say much,) you looked to Timothée, scared to reveal much, but he just nodded, a little sign of approval telling you to go on, “C’est donc un problème psychologique...(So, it’s a psychological...),” you looked at Timothée for a second, “Je ne sais pas 'thriller'...y a-t-il un mot pour ça?” (I don’t know how to say ‘thriller’...is there a word for it?)
“C'est juste comme l'anglais.” (It’s the same as in english.) the host nodded at you and smiled, urging you to consider.
“D’accord, desole, c'est un thriller psychologique, un peu comme le film Black Swan, je joue un danseur...” (Okay, sorry, it’s a psychological thriller, a little like the movie Black Swan, I play a dancer...)
“Et je suis soumis à des règles strictes qui me permettent de ne rien dire concernant mon personnage...” (And I am under strict rules that allow me to say absolutely nothing about my character...) the audience laughed as Timothée spoke.
“Vous deux jouez des intérêts amoureux, est-ce exact?” (You two are playing love interests, is that correct?) The host cut you off.
“Non, nous ne jouons pas d'amour, pourquoi tout le monde nous le demande?” (No, we aren’t playing love interests, why is everyone asking us that?) Timothée leaned up as he spoke, asking the host as he laughed a little. He was right, we’d have gotten that question about a million times since the public was informed we were gonna be in a movie together.
“J'aurais pu jurer, mais vous sortez tous les deux...non?” (I could’ve sworn, but you two are dating right.) you tensed up a little bit, but knew better than to show any sort of emotion.
“Non, non, non. Juste amis,” (No, no, no. Just friends.) you both hesitated then answered rather quick, speaking in sync, making the crowd laugh.
“En aucune façon, mais vous avez une si bonne chimie.”(No way, but you have such good chemistry.) The host motioned to you two and then for the crowd, in a little “am I right?” moment, and the crowd applauded. Timothée looked at you and smiled as you two laughed.
“Je suis serieux, Timothée est mon meilleur ami.” (I’m serious, Timothée’s my best friend.) you giggled, your heart dropping just a little bit every time you answered a question like this, but you made the subconscious choice to ignore the feeling.
“Nous sommes les meilleurs amis, c'est tout.” (We’re best friends, that’s it.) Timothée said as he put an arm around you and playfully squeezed your shoulder.
“Eh bien, y a-t-il d'autres intérêts amoureux dans votre vie, Y/n?” (Well, are there any other love interests in your life, Y/n?) the host turned to you. “Haha non, pas pour le moment,” (Haha no, not at the moment,) you smiled to the audience.
“Et toi, Timothée?” (And you, Timothée?)
“Um...non, pas pour le moment.” (Um...no, not at the moment.) A hesitation, a little, tiny, hesitation. One that could just be summed up by a slow translation, but you knew Timothée heard the question loud and clear. One that no one else would notice, but one that stuck in your brain.
You practically begged Timothée to just let you take a taxi to the airport, but he insisted on driving you and walking you to your gate, you drove him to the airport when he had to be in Paris a couple weeks earlier than you. You two were inseparable, that was the thing, you, Ansel, Timothée and Zendaya would spend almost every weekend together, and you were all equally close. However, you couldn’t deny the fact that you and him had a special friendship, not like the friendship you had with Z or Ansel. You guys were ride or die, you could probably go a year without talking and just pick up where you left off, not that you couldn’t say the same about you and Timothée, you could also go long amounts of time without seeing each other. Z was your all time best friend, your shoulder to cry on, you partner in crime, the person who’d make you feel comfortable in photoshoots. Ansel was Ansel. He was funny, he was comfortable, you guys had a bet that if you weren’t married in 40 years you’d move to a country where they allow you to have more than one wife and Ansel would marry both of you. While Z was your shoulder to cry on, Ansel was the one who’d cheer you up, and you were the same for each other. Ansel, Z, and you fed off of each other’s energy, and with Timothée, it was similar, but a little different. It probably had all to do with your love languages, you were both touch, meaning your way of showing love and appreciation was little lingering touches, and hugs, and holding each other. You’d have to explain yourselves on social media all the time, and you did. Constantly being asked about pictures Z or Ansel would take of you two asleep together on the couch, or him having his arm around your waist at parties, he’d play with your hair when you’d fall asleep on his lap sometimes, and fans would go crazy, like the teasing from Zendaya and Ansel wasn’t enough. He put it best in an Ellen interview.
She asked about you. Of course she did, the rumors were intense, all of the fans constantly shipping you two together, but the way he answered had always been perfect to you, “You know Ellen,” he looked up to Ellen and then to the audience, “My relationship with Y/n is so important to me, it’s a beautiful thing, really, platonic intimacy, the ability to just be with someone, and hold someone, with no romance necessary. We’re so close, we tell each other everything, we get comments on how inseparable we are, how must be dating. But the question I’ll ask is, why? Why aren’t more friendships like this? Despite anyone’s sexuality, orientation, religion, or race, despite any of it, why can’t we normalize this kind of friendship, because genuinely, it’s one of the best things in the world. And also, on a slightly separate note, the misogyny involved in dating rumors like these, it makes me feel ill. And I’m not talking about Y/n and I, I can completely understand why people assume we’re dating, we’re ridiculously close, we spend a lot of time together, and we both very touchy people, so...yeah,” he smiled, knowing Ansel and Zendaya were watching this, cracking up in their living rooms, “but, seriously, I’ve had members of my team questioned if they’re involved romantically with me. I go out to dinner with my sister, and there’s at least one article in the morning about my new, as they put it, “lover”. Why is it so hard of a concept to understand that I have many, many smart, capable, actually more than capable, extremely intelligent, young women as part of my team, that I respect so highly. Why is it the first assumption that these women are involved with me. I know people love it, I know, people are obsessed with love, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But really, something has to be done about this underlying misogyny in every single comment on my instagram posts, something has to be done, and the first step is to stop the generalizations, and to stop the assumptions, because these hard working women who work in my team, should never have to face anything like this. Y/n included too, not that she works for me, but it’s horrendous that no matter how hard she works, no matter how talented she is, and she is, she’s exceptionally talented,” he motioned to the audience, “ you’ve all seen how talented of a dancer and actress she is, yet, when someone google searches her name, a picture of her playing Aurora in one of the most decorated productions in the world, one people fly across countries to see, but you know what will come up? Me. You might have to scroll just a little bit, but a picture of me is going to come up in the mix, and it can’t be said vise versa.”
You gave him the biggest hug in the world after that interview, thanking him for being the intelligent man he was, and you guys continued to be as close as ever. Even though the four of you would hang out over the weekends, you and Timothée would also hang out during the week. You’d walk to breakfast together sometimes, your apartments in the city being really close to each others. You’d have movie nights, game nights, baking nights, nights where you’d just stay up late talking. Some nights he’d just show up at your apartment with flour and butter, even though he knew your fridge was fully stocked, and claim it was the perfect temperature outside for baking or some other random shit to give him a reason to bake with you. So having to send him off, those couple of weeks ago, wasn’t your favorite thing in the world, and he could say the exact same about you right now.
He walked you to your gate and gave you a huge hug. He wrapped his arms around you, fingers running through your hair and you nestled you head in his neck.  “I’ll miss you,” you muttered into his neck.
“I’ll miss you too, call me when you land, okay?” you nodded, hugging him for just a little longer until they called your flight. You both said goodbye, he wished you a safe flight, and you were on you way. Z picked you up from the airport, and you gushed about your trip, she tried to ask you how it was staying with Timothée, but you just glared at her and switched the topic.
It had been a week, which meant Timothée was coming back in a week, you’d face-timed, stayed up late talking on the phone, and while it wasn’t the same, you still had your weekends with Ansel and Zendaya to look forward to every week. Not to mention you were training for an audition for another production like Sleeping Beauty. You’d just finish dance rehearsal with your personal trainer, and you were about to shower then get ready for dinner with Ansel and Z when your phone rang, it was Timothée. It was a little past 5:00, so you were confused, meaning it was 2:00 in the morning in Paris, you picked up.
“What’s up T, you alright?”
“Yeah...why wouldn’t I be.” You could practically feel him smirking against his phone screen.
“Well, it’s 2 in Paris, you should be sleeping.” you heard him laugh agaist the phone, you missed his smile, it’d been a fucking week, and all you could think about was how much you missed his smile. There was silence for a little bit, you could sense something was off, “What’s going on T?” “...there’s a girl,” your heart stopped, you knew it, you knew it when he hesitated in that interview, you knew. You thought about it for a split second, a girl, another girl, another you, but that’s the thing, you were you, his best friend, you weren’t you, his girlfriend. You were his best friend, you did everything you could in your two seconds to find the light in this. If he had a girlfriend, you could finally suppress this stupid crush once and for all.
“T...that’s, wow, that’s great....name! I want a name! What’s her name? Do I know her?” you wish you weren’t but you were, genuinely happy for him, if anyone deserved to be happy, it was him.
“I don’t think you do. Um...Lily, Lily Rose-Depp.”
“Timothée, of course I know who that is, she’s extremely talented, you were in The King together? We watched it together, of course I know her.”
“She’s great, really, really great. I want you to meet her.”
“Yeah...meeting her...,” you felt your eyes start to water, “go on, tell me everything. I want ever detail.” so he did. He told you about how he ran into her a couple days before before the interview, and found out she was here for a photoshoot. Then he ran into her again a couple days ago and found out that she was coming to NYC the day he was, and that he really, really, wanted you all to meet her. You said goodbye a little later, after talking about everything, you told him how happy you were for him, no matter how bad you just wanted to cry.
A couple days later you were walking home from the little cafe you ate breakfast in when you passed a magazine stand. You did a whole double take, then picked up the magazine. Lily and Timothée, her tongue deep down his throat. You didn’t know whether to throw up or cry. You turned in the opposite direction of your house and started walking. You walked until you approached Z’s apartment building, she buzzed you in almost instantly.
“Y/n what the hell are you doing here, aren’t we going out in an hour?” the tears started to stream down your face as you held up the magazine.
“I shoplifted...” you managed to get out through little sobs.
“Come here girlie,” she pulled you into you apartments and sat on the couch, you laid down with your head in her lap, crying into her legs. She stroked your head as you cried, shocked at what was happening. To be honest, this was the first time you’d cried about Timothée. The night after he told you about Lily, you’d been a little off at dinner, and while you excused it for being tired and still jet-lagged. Ansel and Z saw right through you, begging you to tell them what was going on. You told them, then made them swear they would act surprised when Timothée told them.
A little bit after you calmed down, Zendaya’s phone rang, it was Timothée. She tried to ignore it but you told her to pick up. She chatted for a minute, and you tried not to eavesdrop.
“I’m sorry...” she put down her phone and looked at you with “you’re in deep shit now” eyes
“Why, what’d he say?”
“Well, he said he tried to call you, but you didn’t pick up. I said you were with me and your phone was off, he asked to talk to you I said you were in the bathroom...”
“Thank you for that...” you sighed, she hesitated, “The point, Z?”
“Him and Lily got an early flight, they’re here, and they wanna go out to dinner...” you rested your face in your hands, of course, as if tonight couldn’t get any worse, “I can get you out of it?”
“No, no I wanna meet her, it’d be rude if I didn’t go,” you laid backwards on the couch, resting your head in a pillow, “I don’t even know why I’m acting like this, this is good for him, I’m just having a lapse in judgement, I swear I’m fine.”
“Eventually, you’re gonna have to stop telling yourself that, we both know why you’re upset,” You sighed. She was right, but it was so much harder to say it out loud. “Let’s call Ansel, go out to lunch, and then we’ll come back here, and I’ll give you a hot dress to wear, come on, let’s go.”
You went out to lunch. Ansel paid for you meal once he figured out what was up with you. You all went back to Z’s apartment where she gave you a nice blue dress to wear to shut up your complaining about how you had nothing to wear, which was wrong, you had a closet full of gorgeous dressed to wear, but none of them felt good enough. She put on a red dress.
“Lily, is going to eat. her. heart. out.” you playfully slapped her.
“I’m sure she’s very nice, don’t say things like that.” you laughed.
You all left Z’s apartment, headed to the restaurant. You were practically shaking in the car.
“It’ll be quick Y/n, really, really quick, we’ll go in eat, no dessert, head out.” Ansel said as he shook you out of your daze.
“No, no let’s stay the whole night, I’m really excited about this.” He laughed, even though he knew your sarcasm was just your way of covering up your emotion. As the car pulled up to the restaurant, Ansel got the door for you and Z, you walked into the restaurant and checked your coats, and that was when you spotted them. They looked so good together, sitting next to each other at the table you had to walk towards, it was time for you to put on the best fake-happy face you could.

A Buffy rewatch 3x21 Graduation Day Part 1
aka give us a kiss with a fist
Welcome to this dailyish text post series where I will rewatch an episode of Buffy and rant about it in 10-3k words. What you can expect: long run-on sentences and disjointed observations, often focused on one tiny detail about the episode. What you shouldn’t be expecting: actual reviews that make sense.
And today’s episode has a lot of everything, but I guess I’ll mainly just talk about Buffy and Faith. It’s been like 5 days since my last Fuffy rant anyway.
Tumblr media
First of all, I wanna give a shout out to the anon namedropping the Still Pretty podcast into my inbox the other day. Congrats, I binged through the s1-s2 discussions already, and while I often don’t agree with a lot of points, it also put me into this weirdly critical headspace now. So there’s that.
But you know what, we’re gonna ignore a lot of that. There’s a lot of cool stuff in Graduation Part 1 that I like, even with some of those positively weird and questionable slices.
I mean the whole argument between Buffy and Angel is basically just reminding me that I too just want this to be done now? And you know what, here’s a hot take - Angel had no business there with Buffy on that crime scene. She didn’t want him there, she didn’t need him there, so of course she was annoyed with him. She doesn’t need to be the mature one when he’s the one adding nothing to this operation.
I also have a lot of mixed feelings about Anya and Xander at this point. The writing just went from 0 to 100 on the whole Anya likes Xander subplot and it’s weird.
Okay, over to some of the stuff I liked.
Buffy and Joyce’s scene here paints a nice picture of how far they’ve come. There’s something sweet about Joyce understanding what her daughter needs. Even if it is her staying away. (Which also somewhat foreshadows Joyce’s minimized role in the upcoming season.)
The difference between where they were at the end of s2 and s3 is also palpable if you look at the ever-present coming out metaphor.
Buffy:  Mom, I know that sometimes you wish I were different. Joyce:  Buffy, no.
Speaking of which, here’s also some delightfully out of context Bi Buffy reference for you all:
Willow (to Buffy):  You can’t do both? Xander:  Both what?
She can and she will, of course. But that’s for when I decide to re-read season 8 comics. I don’t know if there’s enough rant to cover all the nonsense in those though...
Buffy also has a lot of opinions about the Council, and that made me cheer. It’s so weird that we’re even now still treating the Council like this authoritative force, when Buffy pretty much told them to fuck off in Helpless. Now she’s just making it more official.
Wesley: The Council's orders are to concentrate on... Buffy: Orders? I don't think I'm gonna be taking any more orders.
Love that for my girl.
I guess in that context Buffy turning her back on the council isn’t necessarily about them, but about her turning her back on authority in general. Buffy saw the order and the system under which the world operates and she rejects it. She is here to carve out her own way, to truly “graduate”.
Meanwhile Faith has surrendered herself to the system and the Mayor’s authority. But there’s also nuance in that choice, thanks to the relationship the two develop along the way. Faith is following orders, but she’s also doing things her own way, and she clearly craves the direction she has thanks to the Mayor’s tutoring. There appears to be genuine affection between them, and much like between Buffy and Giles, a textual father-daughter relationship.
Faith even opens up a bit, talking about her mother and her childhood. During those moments was when I wondered about the Mayor’s treatment of her the most. He doesn’t seem to push her to talk and open up more about those experiences, and part of me wants to think that it’s because the Mayor has Ascension on his mind, and doesn’t actually have that much of a genuine care for Faith and to connect with those parts of her... On the other hand, pushing Faith to open up is a guarantee for her to shut down, and he probably knows that.
It’s... a tough line. Because I do think that the Mayor loves Faith, but it’s closer to the kind of love vampires have for each other, than truly selfless love. In my opinion, he mostly wants to mold Faith into the daughter he wishes to have in her.
Mayor: You look lovely. Perfect for the Ascension. Any boys that manage to survive will be lining up to ask you out. Faith: It just isn't me, though.
I know, Faith. The Mayor is so weirdly obsessed and heteronormative about Faith’s love life, he really is like any classically hellish parental figure.
Which brings us to Faith’s real obsession: Buffy.
I like that while we’re showing Faith seemingly relaxed about her whole position with the Mayor, we also see her murdering a punching bag, and having those half-finished sentences about her childhood. Despite everything, you still get the sense that there’s a lot of stuff going under the surface that Faith isn’t dealing with.
Having seen Five by Five also changes the entire context of the fight scene between Faith and Buffy. It of course begins with an innuendo, as all fights between the two do, but the end is what truly sets the mood and leaves me with a deep impression.
As Faith stands there at the edge of the balcony after Buffy stabs her, telling her ‘what a ride’ it was... You get the sense that this is how Faith saw it end all along. She’s been falling ever since she betrayed Buffy, and it was only ever going to end one way.
Giles tells Buffy that Faith ‘has her at a disadvantage’, because she’s willing to kill or whatever, but I don’t think that was ever true. Faith may kill people, but it’s not because she’s motivated. She’s certainly not motivated to kill Buffy.
Faith is just... going through the motions. She’s lost all her drive. Nothing seems to penetrate her heart.
Buffy on the other hand is highly motivated to save Angel. And that is the ultimate blow to Faith. Faith being in love with Buffy has been the rapidly textual subtext for the entire season, even if the Mayor of course tried to retcon it into Faith wanting Angel, or some other nonsense. But textual or subtextual, Faith’s actions were always about Buffy, one way or another.
And here Buffy is, ready to kill Faith in the hope of saving Angel’s life. That’s how little Buffy seemed to have cared about Faith in the end.
I’m not sure how much that played into Faith’s mental state, but I do believe that at this point, she was just tired. She was ready for it to end, much like in that haunting, unforgettable scene at the end of Five by Five.
And yet even then, she did one last favor for Buffy. She chose to take that last fall on her own terms.
There is an interesting question of what Buffy would’ve done if Faith didn’t take away that choice from her. When she stabs Faith, you can see the pure shock and horror on her face as it dawns on her what she’s done. Sure, she went to Faith’s place with this exact goal, but she wasn’t truly prepared to kill. And certainly not to kill Faith.
You can see in SMG’s face throughout this whole sequence, how horrified she is. Which definitely makes me think that she probably would’ve taken Faith to the hospital herself after that... but on the other hand, it’s Angel. And we’ve seen time and time again how much Buffy was willing to give up, even of herself for him. That was sort of the point of their whole relationship falling apart - the fact that they were constantly on the verge of losing themselves in each other.
So I find this a fascinating what-if scenario that I don’t know the answer to. Buffy killing Faith for Angel in that moment would’ve fundamentally changed her character. And I can’t say with certainty, that she wouldn’t have gone through with it after the shock subsided.
That’s why I love Faith for taking away that choice from Buffy. Because even if she were to die, her taking that jump meant that she would’ve died for nothing here, becoming a constant reminder and warning for Buffy about taking a life.
Killing another human being should be pointless and horrifying. That’s the lesson Faith chooses to teach Buffy in what could’ve been her final moments.
Meanwhile on Less Fucked Up Relationship Land, we have Oz and Willow “panicking”. I love them and they’re delightful, and I don’t have much else to say about that, other than that’s at least something much lighter to close on.
Sadly, I’ll probably only get to watch Part 2 about a week from now, but at least I’ll have plenty to process up until then.

Second Look Review: Lion’s Pride 1 & 2
Part 1
So, this is it. The final battle for Earth. Everything that’s happened this season has been preparing us for this very moment.
I’m sweating, guys.
This is nonstop action. So many things are happening at once. So many bad things are happening to the protagonists at once.
I’ve heard the showrunners say several times now that this series is a call back to all the mecha shows from the past, and that’s it’s made for the fans of those shows. I’ve heard plenty of people talk about how nostalgic it makes them, and how it reminds them of watching the shows they used to love.
I was too young for the original run of Voltron, though, and I never really had access to other shows like Macross.
So, I understood in principle, but that same feeling didn’t hit me until these two episodes.
And now I'm’ going to talk about myself for a bit.
---
I can’t even tell you the feeling I was overcome with the first time I watched The Power Rangers. It’s 1993, I’ve been 7 years old for three days, it’s Saturday, and my mind has just been blown. I can’t tell you what it was about the show, but all I knew was that I wanted to be a Power Ranger very, very badly. I can’t, though. But at least I can make believe every Saturday morning.
Tumblr media
Difficulty: I’m a girl. Girls aren’t supposed to like things like that. Martial arts, weapons, fighting? Inappropriate!
So, as my first act of rebellion, I became a wholly dedicated fan to this weirdly , edited-for-american-audiences sentai show.
I still have that guitar riff stuck in my head. It plays for me when I do things that my parents would find...unladylike.
So, from that day on, my love of mecha shows was on. My parents eventually relented, and I treasured the one action figure we could afford. It was the pink ranger, of course.
But I eventually grew out of my Power Rangers phase, and for years that love lay dormant. Sure, there were other shows out there, animated and live action, but I had no way of getting to them.
Then we got cable, which had Cartoon Network. And Cartoon Network had Toonami.
I was 13 years old, staying up past midnight to watch only-lightly-censored anime, and every night my mind was blown.
Gundam Wing was my drug of choice.
Tumblr media
And if my parents hated me watching the Power Rangers, they absolutely despised me watching this.
Despite the protagonists all being 15 years old, Gundam Wing was a mature story. It told of the hells of war, sacrifice, desperation, politics, romance?, and so many other things. It was so very cool.
My parents eventually relented on this, too. I still have the models they bought me.
I was waaaaayyy too into Gundam Wing. I threw myself headlong into the fandom, consuming every fanwork I possibly could. I spent hours going through Geocities web rings trying to find worthwhile fanfiction and fan art (my fave pairing was 1x2, btw.)
Eventually, I came to realize: this show is actually kinda boring. there’s no humor in it. It just...wasn't interesting to me anymore. It was my thing for years, and then suddenly...I was over it.
But it still holds a special place in my heart.
And I told you all of that to tell you this:
The space battles in these episodes remind of of the finale of Gundam Wing.
I felt a good bit of nostalgia, something that doesn't hit me very often. It was nice.
And that nostalgia reminded me of my first rebellion, when I as a girl liked epic space battles and giant combining mechs and nothing was going to take that away from me.
In a way, I still feel like I’m rebelling. And you know what? Being bad still feels so good.
I’m happy to have this show.
- - -
Atlas, known in Greek mythology, held the Earth upon his shoulders. That’s the story these days, anyway. The original myth is that he held up the celestial spheres, in which the stars and planets resided. He’s holding it all up, is what I’m saying.
Tumblr media
It’s very easy to see Shiro in all of this. He’s the leader of Earth’s forces, and is part of the last line of defense against Sendak. That’s a lot of responsibility. And he takes it all upon himself. He doesn’t hesitate to go to Sendak’s ship to disable it.
...could this guy be any more of a hero?
But we can’t forget about the ship Atlas, or it’s crew
Tumblr media
This thing is a beast, and has no right being so powerful. And without the ship, and without the crew to maneuver it into position to block the cannons, the Earth would have been done for. They didn’t do this because Shiro ordered them to.
Tumblr media
Shiro may be the face of the Atlas, but the ship would be nothing without it’s crew.
-
Back to Shiro now.
This fight he has with Sendak is...just insane. It’s so raw and personal, I almost felt like maybe I should avert my eyes.
But I won’t, for reasons.
Tumblr media
Quick question: How are either of them surviving this fall? They’re on the outside of a ship thats falling through the atmosphere, without helmets, and fighting. It’s a sight to behold, for sure, but it’s a bit much.
I’ll let it go, thought, just like I’ll let go the fact that the falling ship hit terminal velocity and didn’t leave a 100 mile wide crater.
I have to ignore that, because Shiro is defeated. And then this happens:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Keith first killed the two pirates in the third episode, then Macidus in the sixth. Before that, none of the Paladins had been shown to kill anyone. I’m still sad about it, in a way. But...better Sendak, than Shiro.
This all seems very symbolic. Everyone seems to have their own ideas about what exactly it means.
In part, I would say this is another moment of Keith never giving up on Shiro. It’s not even about repaying his debt to him; you could argue that that debt was paid in full with interest a long time ago.
Keith knows how much Shiro has been hurt. From here on out, he’s going to make sure that no one ever hurts Shiro again.
As for people saying that Shiro should have been to one to kill Sendak….
I think that the less he has to fight, to kill, to call back those days in the arena, the more he can heal from the trauma of being The Champion.
Tumblr media
- - -
So that’s dealt with. Sendak’s dead. Earth is safe.
How’s everyone feeling?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
….ugh...stop that...lol.
Ok, whatever. Let’s go home.
Tumblr media
Mmm..yeah. This may as well happen.
Part 2
This fight is really something.
First off, I couldn’t help but think that this mech looks like Livia sas Junius from Final Fantasy XIV.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Everything about this fight is terrifying and frustrating. They just won, and for the first time this season, too! And now they’re losing again.
We see now again what was proven in season 6: Voltron was once the most powerful thing in the universe. But time does this funny thing of marching on, and things tend to change along the way.
-
Speaking of changing…
Shiro experiences stress-induced-mech building.
Tumblr media
This whole process is amazing. The animation, the music, the timing...everything! Paired with the fact that I had no idea this was going to happen, I was blown away.
And we have no idea how or why this is happening. Could it be the Castleship crystal they installed in the ship? Is it the gem powering his arm? Could it be both? We definitely get some centering shots on those two items as the transformation happens.
Before, we’d been told that the comet ore had be the catalyst for Voltron’s indescribable abilities. But the Atlas is made from Earth materials, save for the new crystal.
Is it Shiro himself?
We don’t know what’s really happening with him. From Haggar’s experiments on him, to being trapped within Voltron’s quintessence, to being pulled away from the Black Lion and placed into a new physical form, a lot of magical hoodoo voodoo has been happening to him.
And let’s not forget: Haggar was most likely using him, in someway, to enter Oriande.
So, why did the Atlas transform? Because Shiro. I don’t know why, or how, but it couldn’t have happened with anyone else.
And with this new creation, he’s going to save his friends. Or...he’ll try to.
Now, for as much as I love the concept of the Atlas, I have a bit of a complaint.
So, I’m watching this thing transform, and everything is light and wonder. And then..I saw it:
Tumblr media
Shiro, probably: Fine! I’ll make my own Voltron! With blackjack! And hookers!
….
Have you ever been watching something and you feel all things at once?
That’s how I felt.
At first, it was like:
Tumblr media
then I was like
Tumblr media
and then it was back to
Tumblr media
Then I paused the show and did the dishes.
Friends, I hate to say this, but...I don’t like how the Atlas looks. At all.
That transformation sequence had me high on wonder, but when it finished, I crashed back down, hard.
No amount of “ooo she thicc” jokes are gonna save me on this one.
...look at it’s legs!
Tumblr media
And what really gets me is that it threw me off so much, that I kinda checked out for the rest of the episode. That’s why these are the Second Look Reviews; because I was being too ridiculous the first time to appreciate them.
I’ve gotten over it at this point, but I was feeling an all consuming “what the hell did I just witness?” at the time.
--- -
Back to it, though.
Shiro transformed that whole damn ship on his own. He saw his friends in danger and he just...did that.
And it was enough to distract the enemy, but not enough.
Thankfully, Voltron was there to save the day.
And then…
Look, this was stressful. You know they’re going to make it; there’s another season left, for god’s sake! And Voltron, while dramatic and sometimes sad, is a hopeful story.
Our heroes can’t die, not now, not like this.
But they don’t know that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The transition to the funeral, with the lions in the background, was a cruel, cruel fakeout. The emotion in Shiro’s voice here really made me think for a second that maybe they’d actual, ya know...done it.
But it’s ok.
Everyones ok.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And now, there’s the hope.
The entire universe is coming together to help the Paladins rebuild their home. The team has done so much for the universe, and have nearly sacrificed everything doing so (several times at this point).
This is the good ending. It’s happy, it’s uplifting.
Tumblr media
It’s not ending.
---
In summary:
It’s all intense battles and wild nostalgia. These episodes were beautifully put together, from scripting to animation to voice acting.
But just when things were nice and understandable, we get more questions. Questions that I can only hope we get answers to.
Next up: I’ve got a review summary coming up. I’ll talk about my thoughts on this season, the series as a whole, and discuss a few things about next season.
And I took this screenshot
Tumblr media
it doesn't have anything to do with my review, but I noticed that curl on the side of Lance’s face. It’s cute. I wanted to share.

Monday Night Raw review November 27th, 2017
Hi everyone! Sorry I was super inactive last week and didn’t post a ton, I was house-sitting for my Aunt and I couldn’t connect to her WiFi at all. I’m back for Raw tonight, and it feels really nice to have WiFi again!
Please let me know what you thought of this review, and feel free to leave any kind of feedback! Also, let me know what you thought of the show! I always want to hear what you guys have to say and what you thought of the show.
Roman Reigns Opening the Show
Of course he was starting off the show tonight, he just won a title! He got a pretty good and mixed pop tonight, and there were more cheers than boos, which is what he normally gets. People seemed pretty pleased that he is the new Intercontinental Champion, which is a surprise to me since it was my understanding that no one really liked Roman. As I’ve said before in my reviews and posts, I’m not a huge fan of Roman, but I think he’ll do great things as IC champ, and I really liked what he was saying about the IC title deserving respect. I believe that should be said for every title, and after Roman’s run as US Champ, this is a better mindset for him to be in. The Miz-tourage fooled me! They came out to Miz’s entrance! The entire weekend I thought Finn would be challenging Roman tonight since they teased it on twitter, but I guess it’s Elias now? Good for Elias, I’m sure they’ll put on a great match later, but as a Finn fan, he should be in this spot.
Seth Rollins vs. Cesaro
Wait, what happened to the “burn it dowwwwwwnnn” lyric in Seth’s entrance music?? Why did they add it to just take it out again? I think the Shield and The Bar have put on some really great matches as of late, especially the match at No Mercy where Cesaro knocked his teeth up into his jaw, but after they have another title match, it’s time for another team to come into the picture. I’m done seeing these guys wrestle match after match. Let another team have a shot! This match had some really great moments! The first sequence with the little flip that Seth did in the beginning was sweet, and it had me instantly tuned into the match. Booker T had a line during the match where he said, “They can wrestle, and then they can turn it into a fight.” I totally agree with Booker here. I think Seth and Cesaro, and even Sheamus and Dean (even though they aren’t here) can really bring it all to the table and put on a show. This match had high energy the whole time, and even when there was a commercial break, you saw that the energy was still there. There was a great moment where Seth was trying to lock in an abdominal stretch on Cesaro, but Cesaro reversed it with a hip toss! A very powerful looking hip toss! This match could be a main eventer, why is it so early in the show? Seth had a great leg drop on the apron onto Cesaro, but he made it look like a different leg drop because he like, flipped in the air and then dropped. Cesaro was going for the neutralizer, and I don’t understand why, but he “cracks” his neck before he goes for it? It’s a weird move that I don’t totally get. Seth got the “W” with a superkick and a knee to the face, which seemed like a weak finish for a great match like this one. Seth’s post-match interview with Charlie was weird, and I didn’t know he could bring up Renee and Dean being a couple? After next week, I hope we see a change in the tag division.
Samoa Joe vs. Titus O’Neil
When was the last time we saw Titus put on trunks and wrestle? And are we just dropping the Joe/Finn feud? That was a great idea, but hopefully they’re saving Finn for Brock so he gets his rematch. Titus went right for Joe, and that shows everyone that these two came to work to fight tonight. Titus was being really aggressive the entire time, which you need to do when you face Samoa Joe. Joe hit an overhead kick to Titus in the corner, and I love that Joe has this move in his arsenal because not a lot of big guys like him do any high kicks. Joe hit the coquina clutch, and I’m not surprised he won, but this was a good match and I’m impressed!
6-Woman Tag Team Match
I had a feeling that this match wasn’t going to happen, which is a bummer, but I knew they weren’t going to put Paige in a match this early. Paige is really good on the mic, and it seems very natural for her to be this heel character. And she’s right, she pretty much was the starting point for the Women’s Revolution, but I don’t think anyone forgot, at least her fans didn’t. During this segment, and I don’t know if it was just my TV, but it seemed like the crowd was edited out and some parts were changed around? While Sonya and Mandy were talking is when I noticed it most, but I could be wrong. The name Absolution sounds cool, but I need an explanation for it before I can decide whether or not I like it. I know she won’t, but if Sasha joined with Paige, it would be an interesting heel turn for her. I think I’d like to see that.
Bray Wyatt vs. Matt Hardy
Bray is just gross, but it just really works for who he’s trying to be. Bray is another person who’s great on the mic, and he looks like he believes in what he’s saying. He’s crazy, and that’s the only thing I like about him. His whole, “You’re all dead!” slides past Vince and is over with him but Finn apparently isn’t okay okay (if you aren’t sure what this is, check twitter) It’s so great that Matt is getting TV time since Jeff is gone. With Jeff being gone, it’s really hurting Matt’s chances of getting anywhere in WWE again, but I hope he gets to break out in his character more, and then they can bring Jeff back in when he’s cleared. A win for Bray, but are we possibly seeing the start of Matt getting into the broken character?! Let’s hope so because it’s what everyone has wanted to see since he came back.
Cruiserweight Fatal Four Way
Again, maybe my TV is acting up, but this match and the crowd felt like it was super edited while it was going on. I thought Tozowa and Swann had a great sequence of flips and pins in the beginning that impressed me, and this match overall was really impressive. There were two great suicide dives and a lot of great top rope spots. During the match, Michael Cole brought up Starcade, which happened over the weekend, but it was a live event only, so I don’t think a lot of people got his reference. Just a weird plug, Cole. The Phoenix splash that Swann did to get the win was great, a little messy at the end, but still really cool! I’m glad that this match impressed me, I hope this division does it again!
Roman Reigns vs. Elias
Wow, I’m surprised that this is not the main event. This was a great match actually! I hated how much time it took to start because Elias had to do a song, but the Miz-tourage with the harmonicas was actually pretty cool. I don’t know if they were actually playing them, but that was at least a good moment. Both Roman and Elias were looking great, but Elias did really well! He had a lot of good moves, especially that huge elbow drop he had over Roman! Great height and great impact! I think because of the guitar, people assume that Elias doesn’t know how to wrestle, but he does and he’s good at it! Elias had a great sit-up powerbomb, but it wasn’t enough to get him the win, but I would say that this was my match of the night! Samoa Joe came and attacked Roman afterwards, so I guess I know what’s happening next week.
Asuka vs. Dana Brooks
I’m sorry to these two women for the waste of time and bad match that they were put in. Asuka especially doesn’t deserve this booking, and I guess Dana’s mother had surgery today and they made her miss it for this 3-second match? Paige and the Absolution came out at the end, but even that wasn’t worth it.
Jason Jordan vs. Kane
Never ever give Jordan a mic again, I hate hearing him talk. This match didn’t last either, so I guess Braun and Kane are going to hash it out. Again, I feel like Jordan is favoring different knees each week, but maybe since I don’t like Jordan at all I’m not paying him any attention to what he’s doing. OH WAIT IT’S FINN AH MY BOY THE BOY! I was waiting for him to show up, and I hate that I had to wait so long! Finn doing his entire entrance is so extra, and it shows Vince and the entire WWE that he is 100% over and deserves his rematch for the Universal Championship. Now I love that this turned into Finn vs. Kane for the main event. This is much better than Jason Jordan. No, not the chair! I know that wrestling is fake and everything and this is just acting, but good god I hate seeing Finn in pain. It hurts my heart. Oh god Kane put Finn’s head in the chair he’s gonna jump. OH BRAUN I’VE NEVER BEEN HAPPIER TO SEE HIM. This Kane/Strowman idea isn’t something I cared for at first, but I’m happy with it now, and I can’t wait to see what they do next week with it.
Overall I thought this was a decent show! Again not the best, but I’ve seen worse! Match of the night was definitely Roman and Elias, and I don’t think I’ve ever had Roman be in a favorite match for me! I’m glad that Finn eventually came out, too. I’m glad the crowd was super into it as well, that always helps the show.
Stay tuned for Smackdown tomorrow, and other posts throughout the week!

Title Super Crush KO Developer Vertex Pop Publisher Vertex Pop Release Date January 16th, 2020 Genre Brawler, Platformer Platform PC, Nintendo Switch Age Rating E for Everyone 10+ – Fantasy Violence Official Website
It might seem odd that Super Crush KO is the first game by Vertex Pop that I’ve reviewed for oprainfall. After all, I like retro, I like colorful and I like silly. These are all words I would use to describe other games by Vertex Pop, including We Are Doomed and Graceful Explosion Machine. After demoing Super Crush KO at a couple events, I knew I found the gameplay compelling. The question is, was this the next great indie experience? Or did Super Crush KO leave me hoping for more?

I’m gonna go a bit out of sequence and say this – I absolutely adore the art style of Super Crush KO. It’s vibrant, popping with color and catches the eye. Normally such a bright palette of pinks, blues and greens would be jarring, but they mesh really well. When you factor in that color is well used to tell the story through dynamic comic book panels, it’s even better. That artistry also translates to the game itself, and you’ll rarely be bored by what you’re seeing on screen. Though it’s true some enemy models are pretty similar, there was enough diversity to keep me happy. Honestly, if I were just judging Super Crush KO on artistry, it would likely get a perfect score. However, I also have to gauge it based on other factors.

Let’s start with the plot. I use that word generously, since there’s not much story to speak of in Super Crush KO. One day you wake up and some random alien girl, Ann, kidnaps your cat. You angrily put on your sneakers and jacket, and race after her. All that’s between you and saving Chubbz is Ann’s horde of robot minions. I’m not sure if she built the minions or inherited them, nor am I 100% sure how or why your cat was chosen. It’s also totally unclear why the main character of Karen is able to fight robots with seeming superhuman strength and skills gifted to her by eating random junk food. I hate to dwell on all this, but it stands out because the vague nature of the plot kept it from being a better game. I’m not saying every game has to make perfect sense nor take itself seriously, but I do feel what’s here would have been so much more enjoyable if it wasn’t just trying to be cute all the time.

That said, the main draw of Super Crush KO is the combat. It’s a brawler with platformer elements. Each of the game’s 16 stages (plus 4 boss fights and one tutorial area) has you move from section to section beating the living hell out of Ann’s poor robots. You’re gated in areas until you beat them all, and besides that, you’ll find traps such as buzz saws that move on tracks, spikes, lasers and more to screw with you. You have a wide variety of attacks at your disposal, and most of them require energy. Once you run out, you can’t do anything other than standard punches and kicks. Thankfully, each time you destroy a foe, they’ll spill energy gems for you that refill your meter, letting you keep on the pressure. You’ll have aerial corkscrews, ground pounds, uppercuts and more to wreck them with, as well as a handy gun that has unlimited ammo, but which overheats quickly. Most important of all is your dodge, which lets you avoid projectiles and breeze past charging foes. Conceptually, it all works perfectly, and most of the time I found the combat quite fun. The tricky part comes when you factor in the game’s primary replay value, the Rank system.

To get a perfect score on any stage, you’ll basically need to get through it all without getting hit once. That might not sound so bad, but things get fast and furious, and enemies constantly teleport onto the screen, often surprising you. It’s also frustrating that your main attack combo draws you closer to foes, sometimes resulting in taking accidental damage. I also found that the aforementioned traps were a huge hassle when things got heated, and I often would get hit by a poorly placed laser or moving buzz saw. Generally speaking, I got a rank of A or S on most stages, but getting that along with perfect combos in each section was very difficult. And what’s worse, all you get for a perfect score is bragging rights. I’m a big proponent of performance unlocking content, and wish there were bonus stages or bosses that could be attained by doing exceptionally. Or hell, even an alternate ending or customization options. Without those, the game is quite short, as I managed to beat it in about 2 and a half hours.

Generally in games like this I love the boss fights, but sadly that’s not the case in Super Crush KO. Don’t get me wrong, they were fun enough and challenging, but they also were far too similar. Even the boss models are nearly identical, all humanoid robots who run around attacking, then summon more tiny robots when they take enough damage. I would have liked all the bosses more if they were all totally distinct looking and had totally unique attack patterns. As it is, it felt a lot like just taking on slightly more powerful versions of the same enemy over and over.

While most of the controls work seamlessly for the Switch version, the gun was problematic. It couldn’t fire through platforms, and overheated way too quickly. More troublesome was that you have to re-aim the gun with the left joystick, but most of the movement is relegated to the directional buttons. I really wish you could shift the gun cursor around by tapping the shoulder buttons. More than once I would be firing, a foe would teleport behind me, and by the time I had reoriented the gun, I was taking damage. Another issue I had combat-wise was how easy it was to lose track of where foes are when they swarm you. Given that the only warning you get for a pending attack is a visual cue, this was an issue. I would have loved if there was a distinct audio cue each time an attack was pending, cause then even if I lost track of where the foe was, I could still react in time. And though I loved the Super Beam KO finisher, I do wish the meter filled much faster for it. Usually I’d be lucky if I could use it twice in a single stage.

I really hate harping on what Super Crush KO doesn’t do well, because overall there’s a lot I enjoyed about the experience. Honestly, if this had been a Metroidvania that was much more spread out and had really intriguing boss fights, this would have been a tremendous experience. In many ways, it reminded me of Guacamelee 2!, just a stripped down version. As it is, it’s still fun, it just feels like a light experience that could have been so much more. For example, I liked the combat and I liked the platforming, I just didn’t like them together. If they had separate sections with stage hazards and combat, and they didn’t mix, the game would have flowed so much more fluidly. And while I did love the art in the game, the music and sound effects were a different matter entirely. At best they were muted, at worst they were forgettable bubble gum fare.

In the end, Super Crush KO isn’t quite an indie classic, but it also has some shining points. Though the plot is almost non-existent, the characters are cute. The combat is amazing when it isn’t slowed down by some awkward design, and it can flow very well. And the art is tremendously engaging. While I do feel $14.99 is a bit pricey for a game I beat in a little over two hours, I still am glad I got to cover it. Vertex Pop has the bones of an amazing game here, and I’m hopeful their next title reaches its full potential. If you like cute and colorful games and don’t mind something short and sweet, then I’d check out Super Crush KO.
