was finally able to watch suzume in theatres and... what a movie. daijin made me really sad, he was just guiding them to the doors and not opening them (still unsure about that part) and he just wanted to be accepted and loved by suzume, since she apparently “saved” her. made me think that maybe he (and sadaijin too) was made a keystone against his will, just like souta, and this is like a very ridiculous theory but perhaps the keystones develop more advanced abilities to stop the worms and protect the doors over time, souta's grandfather mentioned that he will be a keystone for decades and souta was already able to somewhat stop the worms without any keystone experience (?). it's just that. sadaijin probably was more responsible and accepting about his situation. but daijin's reaction and his willingness to still help suzume even if he was gonna turn into a keystone again, just to gain her love/appreciation. i wanna cry. i absolutely hate it when animals are shown in such situations it makes me extremely sad argh

I feel the need to do an in depth analysis of Suzume after staying up all night putting together all the pieces. It’s honestly probably very innacurate but this is my interpretation of it.
Suzume is obviously a very troubled teen girl who struggles with the grief of losing her mother at such a young age. The chair is representative of her mother and also the different pillars of support in her life. When her mother dies, she loses the chair completely, feeling lost and having no pillars of support in her life at that point in time. She feels disconnected and alone. Eventually she gains back the chair (the pillars of support) but a leg is missing, showing that one of the pillars of support and love in her life is still missing.
Suzume is bound to have continued her life searching non-stop for someone to fill that role, to replace that pillar, to give her the love and support that she so lacks. And that’s precisely what she does until the day she finds Souta.
Now before we get into that I just want to establish the magic of it all. So I believe the worm represents Suzume’s grief (her hurt, her guilt, her anger etc) and the doors represent her wounds. Her grief escapes through her opened wounds, which is the worm escaping through the opened doors. The worm falling and causing earthquakes is representative of her grief hurting the people around her.
Now back to Souta. Souta is clearly a heavily troubled young man. His family’s business is failing, his grandpa is ill and also seems convinced he is bound to be a failure and he’s plagued by his unstable mental state. When he meets Suzume, he goes around closing all her wounds (the doors). And so that’s what they do, they run around closing all her wounds and running away from them but not actually addressing the core issue. Suzume gets attached to Souta very fast because he becomes that pillar of support in her life. He’s closing her wounds for her and she can see that. Him becoming the chair symbolises the fact that he is giving it a new meaning. It is no longer representative of her mother but of HIM. It shows how he has taken on that long lost role in her life.
At the heart of the story, when you take out all the magic, you can see that it’s a story about a heavily troubled 17 year old girl who runs away with a much older heavily troubled man. They trauma bond which is the possible reason for them running away, as they believe that no one else can understand their pain and suffering and only they can see it (like how only they can see the worm). So they discard all their connections and leave to where they only have each other. The funny thing is, they can’t survive just on their own. It’s unhealthy and they simply are not enough for each other even if they think they are the only ones for each other. In fact, although it is given the illusion that Suzume and Souta are making their own way around Japan, the only time they actually ever make progress anywhere is when other people and connections help them, whether that be the bike girl (sorry i don’t remember their names lol) or the bar lady.
Now you may (or may not idk lol) be wondering what the daijin represents in my interpretation. Well the daijin arguably took me the longest to figure out, but I believe it represents the parts of a relationship that care about you, they often have your best interest at heart, they may say things that you don’t like to hear despite them being true, and they may be selfish in the name of obtaining your love and favour. On the other hand, the black cat (idk what it was called sorry) represents the bad parts of a relationship. The parts where you upset them or they upset you. The tough parts that often aren’t talked about. So the daijin and the black cat represent the two sides of a relationship. When Suzume chooses to run away with Souta, disregarding her aunt, her friends and all her other connections, she essentially cuts off her connections and relationships. This is represented by her setting the daijin free from being the gate key (was that what it was called???). Eventually the black cat is also freed from being a gate key.
At this point in the story, Souta sacrifices himself, becoming the gate key. Throughout the story, he had constantly been saying he felt like he was losing himself. This is because him taking on the absent role in Suzume’s life and trauma bonding with her did not help him, it only hurt him more. Trying to save her was killing him. Relationships (the 2 daijin) used to be able to hold Suzume’s grief and make her feel okay, but because she had cut them all off, Souta had to be EVERYONE in her life. That’s why he becomes the gate key. He completely loses himself to a dark place by trying to help her and fix her problems in the same manner he has tried to fix his own — by naively running away from everything.
Suzume finally realises that what they have going on is not working and that she can’t do this alone. With the help of her aunt and Souta’s best friend (more connections), she gets far enough to help Souta by facing her grief head on, defeating it, reconnecting with her previous relationships and restoring the daijin as the gate keys and confronting her lost inner child who is still dealing with the grief. It is also here that Suzume and Souta both proclaim that they want to live. This rivals what they said before about being okay with dying, further emphasising how their mental health has been restored and improved with the help of the connections around them.
At the end Souta says goodbye to Suzume at the train station. This is a good ending, a proper ending. Souta and Suzume, as a couple, were never meant to be. He was way older than her, and what they had was a trauma bond, not a romantic relationship. It was completely unhealthy despite them both loving each other and having each other’s best interest in mind. They shared their time together, they faced their fears and they learnt the strength and importance of all the other connections around them. They still care about each other deeply, but just not the same way they did before. Friends you could say.
This was really long and a bit choppy but I hope it makes sense.

I have multiple questions, thoughts, and theories about Suzume that I'll be writing. The stuff below the cut is going to contain spoilers so be warned. I have a couple grips about how I wished the story would go but I've made my peace with that. I've just accepted that we got what we got.
Edit: Upon reading other's theories and analysis I've realized that me and my autistic brain obviously missed a lot. (I'm terrible with symbolism.) This of course means that I'm going to have to watch this movie again. So read on while keeping this in mind.
The ML had the same English voice actor as Shiro from Voltron so of course I fell in love with him. (Also long black hair and a beauty mark under the eye *swoons*)
The focal point of the movie was about how short human life is. We're constantly grasping at every second of our lives trying to make the most of it.
I loved Daijin by the end of the movie. He grew on me after a while. Also he's a cat so it didn't take much.
Most of the doors were memorable places for the friends that Suzume had made on her journey. I think that it's quite interesting.
Daijin reminded me of Kyubey from Madoka. Except unlike in Madoka where being a martyr sacrifice was a choice that the girls made from their own free will, Sōta was forced into the role due to Daijin's meddle.
What exactly did Daijin even want? Is the answer really he just simply liked Suzume and that's why he passed on being the keystone?
What was the worm thing exactly? They explained why it needed to be sealed away. They explained how the Ever After is a world parallel to their own in which the dead reside. But never the function of the worm. But Makoto Shinkai loves to do that with his movies. I still have questions about Weathering With You.
What exactly are Sadaijin and Daijin? I know they're keystones but I kinda thought they were just small pieces of something bigger. Like more cats or something. I guess the answer is that they're just keystones but a girl can hope.
I know that they explained why Suzume was able to see everything that was happening. However, I feel like more people should be able to see these things. I'm sure many kids at some point have just opened a random door. Kids are curious. I kinda thought it was gonna be more of a chosen one type thing but it is what it is.
Back to Suzume. How'd she get the chair the first time round? It's shown at the end that she gives her younger self the chair but how'd the original Suzume get the chair? (the first Suzume to ever do this in the timeline if that makes any sense) Also how did the chair break? I thought that would've been a bigger plot point but again, I've accepted that not what the story intended.
How does the time travel work in this movie?
Why was there only one door that opened into the Ever After?
How'd Sōta's grandfather know who Daijin was? And why'd he call him old friend?
Why did Daijin's form change after Suzume said that she didn't love it? (Referencing back to bullet point where I question its existence.)
The romance seemed mostly one sided and I wonder if that was intentional. Like maybe when time passed and they met again maybe then there will be a romance. But that wasn't the important part of the movie. Just kinda mad about the build up that didn't deliver a kiss but that's not important.
I might add on more later as I remember stuff but this is what I have so far.

Honest opinion about the movie Suzume no Tojimari

Instead of writing my thesis, I’m gonna recap Suzume no Tojimari the movie instead.
In general, it’s romantic heroic. Or if we have to put a genre, it would be tragedy, slice of life, comedy, and romance. I think the main conflict pattern is similar to Kimi no Na Wa; there’s this big disaster, wooosh, noooo we’re separated, sike I’ll get you back for sure. Yet I still cried. I don’t know, despite having such obvious pattern, the story-telling makes you want to deny the inevitable, and gets you to wonder how it will be resolved. Also, with excellent visuals, music, and voice-over, ah, just cry me a river.
I might seem to exaggerate there. So let’s talk issues. The conflict’s issues, to be precise. First, is childhood memory. I wouldn’t say trauma, despite it being considered traumatic. Because the MC herself couldn’t recall it and it’s not something she constantly dwells on. The memory itself is more like.. A missing puzzle. It was a part of yourself, which was removed or temporarily removed due to a shock. As she was reminded of the missing part, she knew it was her, but at the same time, having a point of view from a different person. This was done so cleverly and in a way that is uncanny. I don’t know about anyone else, but parting with the ‘child’ of myself was painful and a one-way-ticket. A child’s lifetime is all about dreams and adventures, mostly dominated by fantasy, if not irrational mindset. One can part with this lifetime earlier or later, consciously or unconsciously. Suzume captures this ‘child’s lifetime’ right where it hits me most; we were lost, but time stops for no one, so we kept going. One thing that time may allow us to reach back to our past, is to touch our ‘child’s lifetime’, as it may not a goal we need to find, but a courage. Everyone was a child, and there’s a child somewhere, in everyone’s heart.

Next issue is the romance. Love is something I can hardly grasp, and something so.. Impulsive and humble forming such feeling to the point of sacrificing oneself is.. Bizarre. Agh, fxcking heroism, what is this, Romeo and Juliette? I can’t believe I cried on this **sobs**. The movie depicts romance that seems so.. Humble and simple, but hear me out. The relationship started off by accident, from an individual sense of righteousness, which then expanded into mutual benefits. They grew closer within a shared few wild days, and slowly developed a bond that manifested ‘desire with regret’. Ah, it’s not loneliness that can eat your heart out. It’s regret. I’m not only talking about Suzume and Shouta, but also Suzume and Daijin [the cat]. Suzume’s bond with Shouta was created from a positive desire which leads to Suzume’s fear of regret, hence her will of self-sacrifice. On the contrary, Suzume’s bond with Daijin was created from a negative desire, in which regret was the feedback, hence Daijin’s will to self-sacrifice as its redemption. So.. moral of the story is either don’t leave something you may regret, or don’t do something you might regret. No in-between.

Some say there are a lot of ‘plot holes’ in the story, but I think it’s all just minor details. The story itself is mostly symbolic, and hurdling too much on details can ruin the main conflict. Just like art, in such a compact space, instead of spreading the details everywhere, one should focus on a single point to exhibit the emotions in the spotlight. I think how the movie Suzume no Tojimari conveys emotions is very spot-on. 
Alright, Shouta is hot, that’s one factor all these shenanigans happened. Though if I replay the OSTs, there are heart-breaking remnants of memories of Daijin too which is hard to digest. Such roller-coaster of emotions **sobs**. The fact that it’s child-like, devious but righteous, struggling to convey its feelings, fricking locked as a stone for who knows how many thousands of years. I think the song Suzume ft Toaka is actually its song, if not Suzume and Daijin’s.
この身ひとつじゃ足りない叫び  Shouting by myself will never be enough

Some people are disappointed when comparing Suzume no Tojimari with Makoto Shinkai’s previous movies, saying it’s lacking in romance. Yes, the romace is rather simple, and I personally welcome a simpler love when packed along with a filling conflict. I find Suzume no Tojimari’s focal point is not just romantic relationship, and maybe that’s why the side key character, Daijin stands out so much.

Diary of, 07 September 2023.
Today is more better than before, kay literally aku ada gerak gitu buat menyambut hari ospek, udah packing and everything and I'm ready to go to my mom's house.
At first, ada rasa bimbang dengan transportasi yang bakal aku gunain, karena aku bawa tas koper ayahku yang lumayan gede, koper tenteng gitu sih so gak gede-gede banget yang gimana-gimana, but still bakal susah karena berat :(
Jadi aku muter otak, mau naik transport apa, awalnya aku mau normalnya aja naik ojol-kereta-ojol ya kan, tapiii TAPIII *smile disparately* buat narik saldo Dana lagi gak bisa :))) fakk. I don't have any cash, cash terakhir udah aku beliin buat kertas.. au lah apa namanya ribet banget buat crafting shit ospek of course, it cost me 20k tauuuu! Karena harus beli spidolnya juga ARGHRGRHH.
Well, I have no choice but to just use ojol langsung kerumah ibu aku, yes.. 40k.. another money is melayang. Sebenernya aku mau naik buss, tapi nunggunya bakal lama banget and the heat.. THE HEATTT OMGGG, sumpahhh panas bangettt??? aku walau udah pake hoodie tetep aja ngerasa kebakar dan sakit banget sumpah kalo kena.
Ya udalah, karena situasinya genting juga, mau gak mau langsung cuz naik ojol. I enjoy my time on the ride, sekalian jalan-jalan udah lama rasanya gak jalan-jalan, so sekalian nenangin diri walau panas terik menerpa 💀
Pas sampe, mood aku lumayan meningkat karena ada bayi kan disini. Lumayan menghibur yang tadinya udah agak stress sama panasnya matahari hari ini augggghhh. I play with her a bit, pas banget dia baru bangun dari tidur siangnya, and then eat, God damn.. udah lama rasanya I don't have any proper meal before huhu, aku makan ayam kecap pedes manis, and that's soooo good. Yes yes, so good that I had to eat it twice of my usual portion (boong itu laper banget anjay dari semalem belom makan dan itu udah jam 4 sore 🙂)
Long story short, hari ini yah cukup menghibur moodku dan waktu aku juga. Cukup membangun kepercayaan bahwa aku udah bisa take control everything like usual, bantuin PR adek aku, beliin adek aku snack juga, terus urusan buat ospek pun kelar, semua peralatan udah lengkap beserta dresscode nya, so all good, dan aman banget untuk hari ini. Yep yep.
Aku jadi kepikiran Lyaa, pas aku mulai siap-siapin barang buat ospek, karena aku bawa Daijin and I spray the doll with her perfume, I smile a bit dengan perasaan, this doll would be my companion through the ospek day. Dan aku harus ngubungin Lyaa lagi karena aku kangen banget. Never I thought that I could leave her unread at all, iya aku tau Lyaa masih terus berkabar as usual, she's the best.. she really is.
And I really feel bad to take my time off out from her. No, she's not a pengganggu atau apa, engga sama sekali, I just feel like I might hurt her if I keep continue-ing my not good mood towards her. Yes, the stupid thing and feels is always gets my way kalo aku udah punya tujuan tertentu dikepalaku. Aughh.

I'll take my last time, buat mastiin that I'm all okay tonight, then aku bakal nyapa Lyaa lagi besok back to as usual. It's just 2 days or even less if you count it with hours, belum 2 hari but, lebih cepat lebih baik. I would to hold her again and hug her for my day.

Manga the Week of 3/31/21
SEAN: March ain’t going out like a lamb when it comes to manga.
ASH: True, that!
SEAN: Airship has two print books; Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash 14.5 and Mushoku Tensei 9.
Denpa’s website lists femme fatale: The Art of Shuzo Oshimi for next week. An artbook dedicated to the creator of Flowers of Evil, Blood on the Tracks and more.
They’ve also got The Girl with the Sanpaku Eyes 2 listed.
Ghost Ship has Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs 13.
No debuts from J-Novel Club, but we do get the 10th and final volume of The Combat Baker and Automaton Waitress. We also see Demon Lord, Retry! 6, The Epic Tale of Reincarnated Prince Herscherik 4, Holmes of Kyoto 4, My Instant Death Ability is So Overpowered, No One in This Other World Stands a Chance Against Me! 4, and The White Cat’s Revenge as Plotted from the Dragon King’s Lap 4. Desu.
Kaiten Books has a 2nd volume of My Dad’s the Queen of All VTubers?!.
Debuting in print for Kodansha is Chasing After Aoi Koshiba (Kyou, Koshiba Aoi ni Aetara), a yuri manga from Ichijinsha’s Comic REX. It’s got the writer of Masamune-kun’s Revenge (ehh…) and the artist of Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki (yay!). A girl hopes to meet up with her first love at a reunion.
ASH: Seems like it has potential.
MELINDA: Agreed.
Also in print: Don’t Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro 6, Heaven’s Design Team 4, The Quintessential Quintuplets 13, and Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie 3.
Digitally we get two debuts. The first is She’s My Knight (Ikemen Kanojo to Heroine na Ore!?), which runs in Kodansha’s Palcy, and features a popular young man having to deal with falling in love with a girl more popular AND more manly than he is!
ANNA: This sounds amusing.
SEAN: We also get Those Snow-White Notes (Mashiro no Oto). This is a biggie, as it’s already 27 volumes in Japan. It’s multi-award winning, runs in Weekly Shonen Magazine, is by the author of Baby & Me and A Vampire and His Pleasant Companions, and is for the Shamisen what Chihayafuru is for Hyakunin Isshu. It also has an anime this spring!
MICHELLE: I’m super excited about this one!
ASH: I love shamisen so much.
MELINDA: Okay, I’m ready!
SEAN: And we get A Condition Called Love 7, Elegant Yokai Apartment Life 21, How Do You Do, Koharu? 2, I Want To Hold Aono-kun So Badly I Could Die 7, My Unique Skill Makes Me OP Even at Level 1 3, and Saint Young Men 11.
MICHELLE: I need to get caught up on several of these.
MELINDA: Same here.
SEAN: Seven Seas debuts two manga based on light novels they also have. Drugstore in Another World: The Slow Life of a Cheat Pharmacist (Cheat Kusushi no Slow Life: Isekai ni Tsukurou Drugstore) runs in Takeshobo’s Web Comic Gamma Plus, and is about… well, the title.
ASH: So many titles these days are helpful like that, perhaps overly so.
SEAN: And there is also ROLL OVER AND DIE: I Will Fight for an Ordinary Life with My Love and Cursed Sword! (“Omae Gotoki ga Maou ni Kateru to Omou na” to Yuusha Party o Tsuihou Sareta node, Outo de Kimama ni Kurashitai), which runs in Micro Magazine’s Comic Ride, and combines yuri and gore-filled grimdark quite nicely.
Seven Seas also has the digital debut of four more Alice books, which focus on Elliot March and Tweedle Dee/Dum. If I recall correctly, the Twins books were the smuttiest in the series.

SEAN: They’ve also got BL Metamorphosis 4, the third and final volume of Ghostly Things, High-Rise Invasion 17-18, Himouto! Umaru-chan Vol. G1 (also a final volume, sort of – it’s a one-shot continuation), the fifth and final volume of How to Treat Magical Beasts: Mine and Master’s Medical Journal, Made in Abyss 9, Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid 10, and Precarious Woman Executive Miss Black General 6.
MICHELLE: Someday I really will read BL Metamorphosis.
ASH: You really should! It is wonderful.
MELINDA: I also need to read it!
SEAN: Two debuts for Yen On. The first is a spinoff. I Was a Bottom-Tier Bureaucrat for 1,500 Years, and the Demon King Made Me a Minister (Hira Yakunin Yatte 1500-nen, Maou no Chikara de Daijin ni Sare Chaimashita) features Beelzebub and her demonic crew from I’ve Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years having adventures of their own.
The other is Yokohama Station SF, the story of a boy who is allowed to search the giant subway terminal that the world of Japan has become. This looks pretty cool, actually.
MICHELLE: It looks super cool! I always love stories about exploring sprawling structures (like BLAME, for example).
ASH: I’m definitely picking this one up! It looks like it should help fill the SF hole left by Viz’s Haikasoru imprint being on hiatus.
MELINDA: This one sounds so interesting!
Also out next week: 86 ~Eighty-Six~ 7, new reprints of the 5th and 6th Haruhi Suzumiya novels, The Hero Is Overpowered But Overly Cautious 6, and Rascal Does Not Dream of Siscon Idol (the 4th in the series).
Yen Press has many manga debuts next week. We start with Can’t Stop Cursing You (Dareka o Norawazu ni Irarenai Kono Sekai de), a dark little horror title from Gangan Online. A curse detective uses their powers to track down killers.
ASH: I’m curious about this one.
MELINDA: This actually does sound like my kind of thing.
Goblin Slayer Side Story II: Dai Katana gets a manga version of its light novel. It runs in Square Enix’s Manga Up!.
Love and Heart (Koi to Shinzou) is a shoujo horror title from Hakusensha’s Manga Park. A college woman recovering from a breakup now finds she has a new roommate, who says he’s her old childhood friend. But… is he?
ANNA: I’m intrigued by the idea of shoujo horror.
MICHELLE: Yeah, this could be interesting.
ASH: Shoujo horror is one of my faves.
MELINDA: Ooooooooo.
SEAN: Love of Kill (Koroshi Ai) runs in Media Factory’s Comic Gene, and is about a pair of assassins engaging in… sigh… a deadly game of cat and mouse. (No, they’re not cats and mice, I just sighed at the cliche.) I’ve actually heard this is pretty cool.
ANNA: Sometimes I enjoy assassins!
ASH: Likewise!
MELINDA: Me too!
SEAN: Lastly, we see When a Magician’s Pupil Smiles (Mahou Tsukai no Deshi ga Warau Toki), a 3-in-1 omnibus collecting the entire manga. It ran in Shonen Gangan, and also seems to fall into the horror suspense theme Yen’s March debuts are falling into.
ASH: I tend to enjoy a fair amount of the subgenre, so I’m okay with the trend.
SEAN: In non-debuts, we get 86 ~Eighty-Six~’s second manga volume, Bungo Stray Dogs 18, Carole & Tuesday 2, Do You Love Your Mom? 4 (manga version), Fiancee of the Wizard 3, Im – Great Priest Imhotep 8, Kaiju Girl Caramelize 4, Karneval 11, Last Round Arthurs 2 (manga version), Lust Geass 3, Reborn As a Polar Bear 5, Strawberry Fields Once Again 2, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: The Ways of the Monster Nation 4, and The Vampire and His Pleasant Companions 2.

How are the characters called? (Vol 1 to 6)
(UPDATED! This new version covers till Vol 6 of the manga. New characters were added (Chiyoko, Ejiri Matasuke, Hidoro no Okami, Hidoro Shinpei, Hidoro Tamotsu, Ienaga Kano, Kamezō, Kantarō, Kiroranke, Komiya, Kusuda Umakichi, Mishima, Nishin Daijin, Yamamoto, Yodogawa Terunaka) and previous characters were expanded. Please, enjoy this new version as well!).
So, since I’m making a re-reading I thought to take advantage of it to check how the characters call themselves and each other as this goes often lost in the translations but can turn relevant later on.
By the way, in order to do this:.
- characters will be listed by their own name (regardless of it being used in the volume).
- in case of characters whose name is still unknown, I’ll use the Japanese labelling given to them for the Golden Kamuy contest.
- if a character appears in the volume but has no speaking role I’ll only list his name and update it with new info when I’ll do the following volumes (yes, even if I know the new info already… I’m trying to keep this ordered).
- the way characters addressed to themselves will be listed and so will the various form of ‘you’ they use to talk with other people.
- for soldiers their ranking, if known, will be listed.
- in case of nicknames they’ll be listed as well.
- next to each way of calling themselves/the others will be listed the number of the chapter when this happened for the first time.
- at the bottom you can find some useful explanation on the various way to say ‘I’, ‘you’ and the suffixes character use.
So let’s go on and see how the characters called each other in Vol 1-6 (which covers chap 1-59).

Asirpa (アシㇼパ)/Kochōbe Asuko (小蝶辺 明日子) - Previous name: Ekasiotonpuy (エカシオトンプイ).
Asirpa: She uses ‘Watashi’ (わたし/私 “I”) to talk about herself (Chap 2). She defines herself an ‘Atarashī jidai no Ainu no onna’ (新しい時代のアイヌの女 “Ainu woman for a new era”) (Chap 12). After being reunited to Sugimoto after he’d been captured she comments he had treated her like a ‘Kodomo’ (子供 “Child”) and had refused to trust her as his ‘Aibō’ (相棒 “Partner”) (Chap 20).
Asirpa & others: She uses ‘Watashi-tachi’ (わたしたち “We”) to talk about herself and Shiraishi and Sugimoto (Chap 28).
Gotō: Well, they don’t really get to talk so she refers to him simply as ‘Sono otoko’ (その男 “This man”) (Chap 1).
Henmi Kazuo: She calls him ‘Shūjin’ (囚人 “Prisoner”) (Chap 38).
Huci: She calls her ‘Huci’ (フチ Ainu word for “Grandmother”, which the Japanese translation translates as Obāchan’, おばあちゃん) (Chap 11).
Kiroranke: She calls him ‘Kiroranke Nispa’ (キロランケニㇱパ Ainu word for “Mister Kiroranke”) (Chap 47) and defines him as ‘Chichi no mukashi no yūjin’ (父の昔の友人 “Her father’s old friend”) (Chap 47).
Makanakkuru: She calls him ‘Acapo’ (アチャポ Ainu word for “Uncle” , which the Japanese translation translates as ‘Ojisan’ 叔父さん) (Chap 38).
Nihei Tetsuzō: When talking about him, Asirpa calls him ‘Nihei Tetsuzō’, saying she heard his name before (Chap 26). Saying they’ll catch him so they’ll protect Retar she calls him ‘Shūjin’ (囚人 “Prisoner”) (Chap 26). Watching Nihei aiming at something, she calls him ‘Ano Otoko’ (あの男 “That man”) (Chap 27) and when she can’t believe how tenacious he is, she calls him ‘Sono Otoko’ (その男 “This man”) (Chap 28).
Osoma: She calls her ‘Osoma’ (Chap 12).
Retar: She calls him ‘Retar’ (Chap 2). She also calls him ‘Horkew Kamuy’ (ホㇿケウカムイ Ainu word for “Wolf god”) (Chap 11) or ‘Omae’ (おまえ “You”) (Chap 14).
Ryū: When saying she won’t let him behind, she calls him ‘Ainu Inu’ (アイヌ犬 “Ainu dog”) (Chap 29). When he’ll show up while they’re hunting she calls him ‘Ryū’ and when he smells the scent of a bear and would like to follow it she calls him ‘Īko’ (いい子 “Good boy”) (Chap 36).
Shiraishi Yoshitake: In the beginning she keeps mispronouncing his nickname, calling him ‘Dappun-ō’ (脱糞王 “Defecation king”) (Chap 17) though she also uses ‘Omae’ (おまえ “You”) to call him (chap 15). When he tries to escape from her and fail though, she uses his true nickname ‘Datsugoku-ō’ (脱獄王 “Escape king”) (Chap 17). When claiming she has not much worth to him she calls him ‘Ano Otoko’ (あの男 “That man”) (Chap 28). She finally calls him ‘Shiraishi’ when he tosses the rifle on the ground (Chap 28). Telling him he has to stay because he’ll be of use to her she calls him ‘Omae’ (お前 “You”) (Chap 32). Finding him drunk and asleep she calls him ‘Yakudatazu no Shiraishi’ (役立たずの白石 “Useless Shiraishi”) (Chap 34) and ‘Kitanai otoko’ (汚い男 “Filthy man”) (Chap 34). After he gives Asirpa info about Henmi she claims she believed he was ‘Nonda kure teru tada no buta’(飲んだくれてるただのブタ “A drunken pig”) but now she had revalued him (Chap 38). When Shiraishi will say he’ll help them to meet Nopperabō she switches from calling him ‘Dappun-ō’ (脱糞王 “Defecation king”) to ‘Datsugoku-ō’ (脱獄王 “Escape king”) (Chap 49).
Sugimoto Saichi: In the beginning she uses just ‘Omae’ (お前 “You”) to call him (chap 1) and she’ll also refers to him as ‘Sisam’ (シサㇺ Ainu word for “not-Ainu Japanese person”) (Chap 2). Then she’ll starts to call him ‘Sugimoto’ also (Chap 2), though occasionally she’ll still call him a ‘Sisam’. She’ll call him ‘Fujimi no Sugimoto’ (不死身の杉元 “Sugimoto the Immortal”) when she’ll ask him what that nick means (Chap 5) though. She calls him ‘Baka’ (バカ”Stupid”) when he forgets his knife and bayonet (Chap 13). When asked by Kirokante why she’s with him she answers he’s her ‘相棒’ (Aibō “Partner”) (Chap 48)
Tanigaki Genjirō: When thinking Tanigaki might be still searching her she calls him ‘Ano Heishi’ (あの兵士 “That soldier”). When she says she doesn’t know if he’ll survive she calls him ‘Sono Otoko’ (その男 “This man”) (Chap 28). Entrusting her grandmother to him she calls him ‘Tanigaki’ (Chap 50).
Ushiyama Tatsuma: The first time she sees him she calls him ‘Sinna kisar’ (シンナキザㇻ Ainu word for “Strange ears”) (Chap 52). After he tells her which sort of man she has to pick she calls him ‘Sensei’ (先生 “Teacher”) (Chap 52). Escaping from the hotel she calls him ‘Chinpo Sensei’ (チンポ先生 “Professor penis”) (Chap 54).
Wilk: She calls him ‘Aca’ (アチャ Ainu word for “Father” , which the Japanese translation translates as ‘Otōsan’ お父さん) (Chap 14). When she can’t believe he’s the person in jail she refers to the person in jail as ‘Nopperabō’ (のっぺらぼ “Faceless male”) (Chap 48). When she wonders if he could be her father she calls him ‘Watashi no chichioya’ (私の父親 “My father”) (Chap 49).
Others: Talking about how she had to roast meat for Shiraishi and Sugimoto she calls them ‘Omae-ra mitaina tokai no moyashi-kko’ (お前らみたいな都会のもやしっ子 “You, little city boys”) (Chap 25).

Sugimoto Saichi: He calls him first with his full name ‘Sugimoto Saichi-san’ (杉元佐一さん) then just ‘Sugimoto-san’ (杉元さん) or ‘Anta’ (あんた “You”). He also mentions how people during war used to call him ‘Fujimi no Sugimoto’ (不死身の杉元 “Sugimoto the Immortal”) but doesn’t use this nick (Chap 1).

Sugimoto Saichi: At first he will refer to him as ‘Kono Heitai’ (この兵隊 “This soldier”) and as Shiraishi’s ‘Nakama’ (仲間 “Comrade”) (Chap 39). After Sugimoto gives him a cover he’ll say of him ‘Yasashina… kono hito’ (やさしな… このひと “So gentle… this guy”) (Chap 39). However he will comment Sugimoto gives of the same scent he has, the one of a ‘Hitogoroshi’ (人殺し “Murderer”) (Chap 39). He then in this thoughts will calls him ‘Ano hito’ (あのひと “That guy”) and ‘kono hito’ (この人 “this guy”) (Chap 39). When asking him which hammer he would like to use he starts to call him ‘Sugimoto-san’ (杉元さん) (Chap 40). When the soldiers will ask if that man was Sugimoto though, he’ll call him just ‘Sugimoto’ (Chap 40). When about to fight him he asked him if he was called ‘Fujimi no Sugimoto’ (不死身の杉元 “Sugimoto the Immortal”), then to refer to him used ‘Anata’ (あなた “You”) (Chap 41). When Sugimoto suggest they could gleam together he’ll call him ‘Suteki na hito’ (素敵なひと “Wondeful person”) (Chap 41).

Hijikata Toshizō (土方 歳三) - Nicknamed ‘Oni no Fukuchō’ (鬼の副長 “Demonic vice-commander”), ‘Bakumatsu no Baragaki’ (幕末のバラ餓鬼 “Lingering ghoul of the Bakumatsu”), ‘Baragaki’ (バラガキ “Brat with a thorny personality”) and called ‘Danna’ (旦那 “Boss”) by his underlings.

Shibukawa Zenjirō: Talking about him to Ushiyama he calls him ‘Shibukawa Zenjirō’ and says he is the ‘Tōzoku-dan no tōshu’ (盗賊団の頭首 “Leader of a band of thieves”) but then he switches on calling him just ‘Shibukawa’ when he tells Ushiyama he shouldn’t kill him (Chap 21). Meeting him though he’ll always call him ‘Shibukawa Zenjirō’ (Chap 21).
Shiraishi Yoshitake: Meeting him he calls him ‘Shiraishi’ (Chap 37).
Sugimoto Saichi: When speculating Shiraishi might have someone helping him he’ll call him ‘Nakama’ (仲間 “Comrade”) (Chap 37). Hearing his name and nickname he’ll repeat ‘Fujimi no Sugimoto’ (不死身の杉元 “Sugimoto the Immortal”) and will ask Shiraishi if he’s his ‘Aibō’ (相棒 “Partner”) (Chap 39). He then will start to refer to him as ‘Sugimoto’. (Chap 39)
Tsurumi Tokushirō: Seeing him for the first time he calls him ‘Tsurumi toka iu gunjin’ (鶴見とかいう軍人 “Tsurumi the soldier”) (Chap 34).
Ushiyama Tatsuma: When he first sees him he calls him ‘Fuhai no Ushiyama’ (不敗の牛山 “Ushiyama the Undefeated”), although he immediately switches to just ‘Ushiyama’ (Chap 12).

Dunn, Eddie: Talking about who caused the wolves extinction he calls him an ‘America-jin’ (アメリカ人 “American”) (Chap 24).
Matagi: He refers to them as ‘Matagi’ (Chap 22). Talking about the Matagi he calls them ‘Monooto tatezu ni kōdō suru seiei butai’ (物音立てずに行動する精鋭部隊 “Elite troops acting without sound”) (Chap 23) and ‘Omae-ra’ (お前ら “You (Plural)”) (Chap 23).

Huci: After hearing the legend of the gold from her he calls her ‘Bā-chan’ (ばちゃん “Grandmother”) (Chap 30).

Nihei Tetsuzō: Talking about him he says he is a ‘Ude no tatsu ryōshi’ (腕の立つ猟師 “Ridiculously skilled hunter”) and is nicknamed by pelt trader as ‘Tōmin-chū no higuma mo unasareru akumu no kumauchi Nihei Tetsuzō’ (冬眠中の羆も魘される悪夢の熊撃ち二瓶鉄造 “The hunter who gives hibernating bears nightmares, Nihei Tetsuzō”) (Chap 25). Saying it’s him he calls him ‘Nihei Tetsuzō’ (Chap 27). Comparing him to Ushiyama he calls him ‘Nihei’ (Chap 31).
Retar: When he’s awakened by him he calls him ‘Yōkai’ (妖怪 “Ghost/Monster”) (Chap 17). He then calls him ‘Retar’ (Chap 34).
Ryū: When the two of them fight he calls him ‘Kono wan-bun’ (このワン分 “This small dog”). He calls him ‘Ryū’ (Chap 36). When Ryū escapes leaving him alone with Ushiyama he calls him ‘Kuso Inu’ (クソ犬 “Damned dog”) (Chap 37).
Sugimoto Saichi: At first he calls him ‘Omae-chan’ (お前ちゃん “You”) (chap 6) to switch to just ‘Omae’ (お前 “You”) when they risk dying of hypothermia (Chap 7). After they talk, when he says bye to him he calls him ‘Fujimi no Sugimoto’ (不死身の杉元 “Sugimoto the Immortal”) (Chap 7). Discovering Sugimoto is still alive despite having been captured by the 7th he calls him ‘Shibutoi yarō’ (しぶとい野朗 “Stubborn guy”) and ‘Sugimoto no yarō’ (杉元の野朗 “That Sugimoto guy”) (Chap 18). Tanigaki Genjirō: He calls him ‘Tanigaki’ (Chap 36).
Tsurumi Tokushirō: Seeing him wear the tattooed skin he calls him ‘Hentai Chūi’ (変態中尉 “Perverted First Lieutenant”) (Chap 19). Talking about him with Tanigaki he also calls him ‘Tsurumitte yatsu’. (鶴見って奴 “That Tsurumi guy”) (Chap 31). Suggesting to report him he calls him ‘Tsurumi Chūi’ (鶴見中尉 “First Lieutenant Tsurumi”) (Chap 50).

Saying she was on the second floor with Ushiyama he calls her ‘Ienaga’ (Chap 55).
Kiroranke: Meeting him he asks him if he is ‘Tsurumi chūi no teshita’ (鶴見中尉の手下 “First Lieutenant Tsurumi’s minion”) (Chap 48). Later he calls him ‘Anta’ (アンた “You”) (Chap 48). Later on he’ll calls him ‘Anta’ (あんた “You”) but this time is written in Hiragana (Chap 49). When telling Shiraishi he’s hiding something, he calls him ‘Kiroranke’ (Chap 49).
Nihei Tetsuzō: When explaining Shiraishi has to tag along so they can recognize him he calls him ‘Nihei Tetsuzō’ (Chap 26). Talking about the skins they have he refers to him as ‘ Saigo no ōkami o otte ita ryōshi no ossan’ (最後の狼を追っていた猟師のオッサン “The old hunter who was chasing the last wolf”) (Chap 47)
Nikaidō Yōhei: When he says he’ll mark him he calls him ‘Omae’ ( おまえ “You”) (Chap 17). Attacking him before killing him he calls him ‘Hanuke yarō’ (歯抜け野朗 “Missing tooth guy”) (Chap 18).
Ogata Hyakunosuke: When Ogata removes his coat Sugimoto calls him simply a ‘Heishi’ (兵士 “Soldier”).
Osoma: When he asks her for her name he calls her ‘Ojō-chan’ (お嬢ちゃん “Miss”) (Chap 12). Later, when talking with her father, he calls her ‘Osoma-chan’ (オソマちゃん).
Retar: First seeing him Sugimoto calls him a ‘Yaken’ (野犬 “Wild dog”) as that’s what he thought Retar was (Chap 2) and also referred to him as a ‘Dekai Shiroi Inu’ (デカイ白い犬 “Huge white dog”) (Chap 2). When seeing him with Asirpa after his confrontation with Tamai group he calls him ‘Shiroi Ookami’ (白いオオカミ “White Wolf”) and then just ‘Ookami’ (オオカミ “Wolf”) (Chap 11). When seeing Retar running after the deer he missed he calls him just ‘Retar’ (Chap 24) .

When Shiraishi is trying to escape he calls him ‘Kono yarō’ (この野郎 “You bastard”) (Chap 6). When Shiraishi tries rub a huge piece of wood to make a fire he calls him ‘Aho’ (アホ “Idiot”) (Chap 7). Then, when searching for the cartridges in the river calls him ‘Temē’ (テメー “You”) (Chap 7). After they talk though, he starts to call him ‘Shiraishi’ (Chap 7). When he sees him slipping in his cell through the bars he calls him ‘Yōkai’ (妖怪 “Ghost/Monster”) (Chap 18). When scolding him for not bringing up Nihei was searching for a white wolf sooner Sugimoto calls him ‘Temē’ (てめー “You”) (Chap 26). When Shiraishi can’t find the way Tanigaki went he calls him ‘Aho’ (アホ “Idiot”) (Chap 28). Talking about the skins they have he refers to him as ‘ Datsugoku shite wa tsukamaru dojina ossan’ (脱獄しては捕まるドジなオッサン “The clumsy old guy who escapes from prison only to get caught again”) (Chap 47). When he calls in the water he calls him ‘Kono baka’ (このバカ “this idiot”) (Chap 47) and ‘Yakudatazu’ (役立たず“Useless”) (Chap 47) and once he was fished back he called him ‘Ningyo’ (人魚 “Mermaid”) (Chap 47). Soldiers of the 7th: While talking with the Nikaidō twins he calls the other soldiers their ‘Onakama’ (仲間 “Buddies”) (Chap 18), while when talking with them he calls them ‘Omae-ra’ (お前ら and おまえら “You (plural)”) (Chap 18).
Sugimoto-tachi o Bikō Shite Ita Shūjin: When they capture him with the squirrel trap he claims he is the ‘Itsupikime’ (一匹目 “the first small animal”) they captured (Chap 3). Toraji: He calls him ‘Toraji’ (Chap 1). Talking about Toraji with Asirpa he calls him first ‘Osananajimi’ (幼なじみ “childhood friend”) then switches to ‘Senyū’ (戦友 “comrade in arms/war buddy”) (Chap 1). Asking him if he really left his wife alone to see him he calls him ‘Omae’ (お前 “You”) (Chap 35).
Tsurumi Tokushirō: Talking with the Nikaidō brothers he calls him ‘Omae-ra no Taishō’ (お前らの大将 “Your commander”) (Chap 16). When thinking he should have pretended to join him he calls him ‘Ano Tsurumi toka iu chūi’ (あの鶴見とかいう中尉 “That lieutenant Tsurumi or whatever”) (Chap 17). Umeko: Talking about her with Toraji he uses ‘Umeko’. Calling her he uses ‘Ume-chan’ (梅ちゃん) (Chap 1). When talking with Ogata about why he’s searching the gold he calls her ‘Horeta Onna’ (惚れた女 “the woman he fell in love with”) (Chap 5). He however calls her ‘Omae’ (お前 “You”) when he tells her to marry Toraji (chap 6). Talking with Toraji about her he calls her ‘Hanayome’ (花嫁 “Bride”) (Chap 35).
Ushiyama Tatsuma: The first time he sees him he calls him ‘Anta’ (アンた “You”) (Chap 52) and when he tries to cause him to lose balance he mentally calls him ‘kono ossan’ (このオッサン “This old man”) (Chap 52). After he tells Asirpa which sort of man she has to pick he calls him ‘Sensei’ (先生 “Teacher”) (Chap 52). While they fight he calls him ‘Kono yarō’ (コノ野郎 “This bastard”) (Chap 54). Wondering if he died in the explosion he calls him ‘Ushiyama’ (Chap 54).

Huci: After hearing the legend of the gold from her he calls her ‘Bā-san’ (ばさん “Grandmother”) (Chap 30). When Shiraishi visits him he calls her ‘Obā-chan’ (おばあちゃん “Grandmother”) (Chap 36).
Mishima: He calls him ‘Mishima’ (Chap 46) and ‘Omae’ (お前 “You”) (Chap 46).
Nihei Tetsuzō: He refers to him as a ‘Yūmeina kumauchi’ (有名な熊撃ち “Famous bear shooter”) (Chap 22) whose name was ‘Nihei Tetsuzō’ (Chap 22) and also uses ‘Anta’ (あんた “You”) to call him. (Chap 22). Talking about his rifle he calls him ‘Nihei Tetsuzō’ (Chap 44) and then just ‘Nihei’ (Chap 44).
Nikaidō Kōhei: He calls him ‘Nikaidō’ (Chap 43)
Ogata Hyakunosuke: Asking him to spare Huci and Osoma he calls him ‘Ogata Jōtōhei-dono’ (尾形 百之助上等兵殿 “Superior Private Ogata, sir”) (Chap 43). Tanigaki defines him ‘Shageki no tatsujin’ (射撃の達人 “Master Marksman”) (Chap 43). Later he refers to Ogata as just ‘Ogata Jōtōhei’ (尾形 百之助上等兵 “Superior Private Ogata”) (Chap 44).
Osoma: He calls her ‘Osoma’ (Chap 43)
Retar: He calls him a ‘Ezo Ōkami’ (エゾオオカミ “Hokkaido Wolf”) which is what Retar is (Chap 11) and then just ‘Ōkami’ (オオカミ “Wolf”) (Chap 11). He also calls him a ‘Shiroi ōkami’ (白いオオカミ “White Wolf”) (Chap 22). Talking about his bond with Asirpa he calls him ‘Ōkami’ (狼 “Wolf”) (Chap 25). Later, when talking about Retar’s behaviour he suggests he could be an ‘Okuri Ōkami’ (送り狼 “Following wolf”) (Chap 26)
Ryū: He calls him ‘Ryū’ (Chap 36) and defines him a ‘Sudeni shitsuke mo kunren mo sa reta atamanoī ryōken’ (すでにしつけも訓練もされた頭のいい猟犬 “An already well trained smart hound”) (Chap 36). Explaining Shiraishi how he should establish dominance over him he refers to him simply as the ‘Inu’ (犬 “Dog”) (Chap 36).
Tamai: Thinking about him he calls him ‘Tamai Gochō’ (玉井伍長 “Corporal Tamai”) (Chap 43)

Hijikata Toshizō: Seeing him outside the bank he calls him ‘Hijikata Toshizō’ (Chap 34), then he defines him ‘Bakumatsu no bōrei’ (幕末の亡霊 “The departed spirit of the Bakumatsu”) (Chap 34) then corrects himself and says he is a ‘Kono yo ni urami o nokoshita akuryō-me’ (この世に怨みを残した悪霊め “Evil spirit stuck in this world due to a grudge”).
Nikaidō Kōhei: He calls him ‘ Nikaidō’ (Chap 46), then ‘Omae’ (お前 “You”) (chap 46), Uragirimono (裏切り者 “Traitor”) and then ‘Kisama’ (貴様 “You”) (Chap 46).

Umeko: When talking about herself with her child she calls herself ‘Okā-chan’ (お母ちゃん “Mother”) (Chap 15), while talking with Sugimoto she uses ‘Watashi’ (わたし) (Chap 15). Talking about how she’ll escape from Sugimoto she uses ‘Watashi’ (私 “I”) (Chap 35).
Toraji: Talking with him about Sugimoto he calls him ‘Toraji-san’ (寅次さん) (Chap 35) but then switches to ‘Tora-chan’ (トラちゃん) (Chap 35).
Sugimoto Saichi: Calling him she uses ‘Saichi-chan’ (佐一ちゃん) (Chap 1). When she can’t recognize him she uses ‘Anata’ (あなた “You”) (Chap 15). Talking with Toraji about him he calls him ‘Saichi-san’ (佐一さん) (Chap 35).

Ushiyama Tatsuma (牛山 辰馬) - Nicknamed ‘Fuhai no Ushiyama’ (不敗の牛山 “Ushiyama the Undefeated”).
Ushiyama Tatsuma: He uses ‘Ore’ (オレ “I”) to refer to himself (Chap 37).
Asirpa: He calls her ‘Ojōchan’ (お嬢ちゃん “Lady”) (Chap 37).
Henmi Kazuo: Talking about him with Nagakura he calls him ‘Henmi Kazuo’ and ‘Yatsu’ (ヤツ “That guy”) (Chap 37).
Hijikata Toshizō: When he sees him he calls him ‘Hijikata no Jijī’ (土方のジジイ”Old man Hijikata”) but then switches to ‘Jī-san’ (爺さん “Grandfather/old man”) (Chap 12). He later settles on calling him ‘Jijī’ (ジジイ “Old man”) (Chap 21). When he sees him killing though he acknowledges he’s the true face of the Shinsegumi ‘Oni no Fukuchō’ (鬼の副長 “Demonic vice-commander”) (Chap 21) He calls him ‘Anta’ (あんた “You”) when he asks him if he plans to make a new Shinsengumi (Chap 21). Talking about Murahashi and Hijikata he calls him first ‘Hijikata Toshizō’ (Chap 52) then ‘Hijikata no yarō’ (土方の野郎“that bastard Hijikata”) (Chap 52).
Ienaga Kano: Seeing her he says she is a ‘Ii onna’ (いい女 “Fine woman”) (Chap 50) then starts calling her ‘Okami’ (女将 “Proprietress”) (Chap 51). When thinking at her as Chicanobu he calls him a ‘Jijī’ (ジジイ “Old man”) (Chap 51). Telling her to say what she knows to SHiraishi he calls her ‘Ienaga’ (Chap 55).
Nagakura Shinpachi: When he first hears his name, first he repeats it, then he calls him ‘Kono Jijī’ (このジジイ “That old man”) (Chap 20) then wonders if he is the ‘Shinsengumi saikyō kenshi’ (新選組最強剣士 “Shinsengumi strongest swordman”) or more specifically ‘Nagakura Shinpachi’ (Chap 20). Talking with Hijikata about the info he received, he calls him ‘Nagakura’ (Chap 21). As Nagakura threaten to cut him in a half he calls him ‘Shinsengumi de ichiban to utawa reta kengō no sako ka’ (新選組で一番と謳われた剣豪の迫カ “The swordman whose martial arts were described as being the best in the Shinsengumi”) (Chap 33).
Nihei Tetsuzō: Talking about Henmi he calls him ‘Nihei Tetsuzō’ (Chap 37).
Shiraishi Yoshitake: Seeing him in front of the brothel he calls him ‘Shiraishi Yoshitake’ (Chap 33) though moments afterward he calls him simply ‘Shiraishi’ (Chap 33). When Shiraishi stabs his forehead with a nail he calls him ‘Shiraishi-kun’ (シライシくん) (Chap 37). Ushiyama defines him someone who looks like a ‘Ahotsura’ (アホ面 “Stupid face”) but who’s actually a ‘Yudan dekinai yōkai’.
(油断できない妖怪 “Apparition/Monster with whom you can’t be careless”) (Chap 37). Telling him they’ll let him live if he’ll let them copy his tattoo he calls him ‘Omē’ (オメー “You”) (Chap 37). Asking how he got a copy of Henmi’s tattoo he’ll use ‘Omae’ (お前 “You”) (Chap 55) and call him a ‘Dojikko’ (ドジっ子 “Clumsy person”) (Chap 55) to switch to ‘Temē’ (てめえ “You”) when he tells him he’s better not try to trick them (Chap 55).
Sugimoto Saichi: Realizing who he is he calls him ‘Fujimi no Sugimoto’ (不死身の杉元 “Sugimoto the Immortal”) (Chap 54).
Others: When he realize Hijikata Toshizō and Nagakura Shinpachi are both ex-Shinsengumi members he calls them ‘Shinsengu no oibore-domo’ (新選組の老いぼれ共 “You Shinsengumi ex-members”) and then ‘Anta-ra’ (あんたら “You (plural)”) (Chap 20). Saying he’ll head off for a bit he calls them ‘Oibore-tachi’ (老いぼれたち “Old guys”) (Chap 33).

Yodogawa Terunaka (淀川 輝前) – Rank: ‘Chūsa’ (中佐 “Lieutenant Colonel”).
Nuances in the words used to say ‘I’
.
Atashi (あたし or アタシ): The “I” which is an informal effeminate form of watashi. It has a kind of “cute” nuance to it. Because kanji are generally seen as masculine, this word has no kanji form. It is written in either hiragana or katakana.
Boku (僕): The “I” which gives a masculine impression. Perceived as humble, but can also carry an undertone of “feeling young” when used by males of older age. Also used when casually giving deference; “servant” uses the same kanji (僕 shimobe). Can also be used as a second-person pronoun toward male children (English equivalent - “kid” or “squirt”); it is typically used by males, especially those in their youth.
Ore (俺 orおれ): The masculine way to say “I”. This is the word tough guys use, and as such it’s almost never used with a polite verb form. It’s worth to note though that it was also the way soldiers would say “I”, though since Sugimoto and Toraji used it prior to join the army I guess it doesn’t matter.
Watashi (私 or わたし): The standard, gender-free way to say “I”.
Nuances in the words used to say ‘you’
.
Anata (貴方 or あなた): The most common, average, regular-looking, no-nuance second person pronoun of the language. Basically you’d use anata is when you don’t know someone’s name.
Anta (あんた or アンタ): The “you” which is a shortened version of anata, highly informal and generally rude or admonishing in nature.
Kisama (貴様 or きさま): The “you” who’s currently rude, usually used between enemies and by Japanese males when angry. In old Japan it was actually a term of respect though and, later, it was commonly used among soldiers to talk to each other.
Omae (お前 or おまえ): The “you” used in very informal situations or toward people of lower status. This word feels very “blunt” and can easily come off as rude.
Temē (手前 or テメー or てめえ): The “you” rude and confrontational. Literal meaning “the one in front of my hand”. It’s a reduction of temae and it’s ruder. Used when the speaker is very angry. Originally used for a humble first person. The Kanji are seldom used with this meaning, as unrelated to its use as a pronoun, 手前 can also mean “before”, “this side”, “one’s standpoint” or “one’s appearance”.
Plural suffixes
.
-domo (ども): It used as a first-person plural it’s humble (Examples: watashi-domo) while if uses as second or third person plural implies the speaker is of higher status than those referred to and can sound derogatory. Basically it can make people’s position low, and can even be used to insult people. Usually written using kana alone. (Examples: Omae-domo, Shinsengu no oibore-domo).
-gata (方 or がた): Roughly it means “Et alia”. It’s used to turn a word into a plural but it’s also more honorific and respectful than -tachi. Basically it can make people’s position high, so it will sound weird if you use it instead than ‘-tachi’ with those who belong to your community. (Examples: Osamurai-san-gata, Danna-gata).
-ra (等 or ら): Roughly it means “Et cetera”. It’s used to turn a word into a plural but it’s rather casual and therefore slightly more rude than -tachi so it should usually only be used with family or the first person unless you have a specific reason for it or you might sound deprecating. (Examples: Anta-ra, Omae-ra).
-tachi (達 or たち): Roughly it means “And the others”. It’s used to turn a word into a plural (Examples: Anta-tachi, Omae-tachi, Henshi-tachi).
Honorific suffixes

-Chan (ちゃん): A diminutive suffix; it expresses that the speaker finds a person endearing. Also used to speak about children or among childhood friends.
-Dono (どの or 殿): Roughly means “lord” or “master”. It does not equate noble status; rather it is a term akin to “milord”, and lies below -sama in level of respect. It was also used in place of “sir” in the army.
-Kun (くん or 君): Generally used by people of senior status addressing or referring to those of junior status.
-San (さん): The most commonplace honorific and is a title of respect typically used between equals of any age. Although the closest translations would be “Mr.”, “Miss”, “Ms.”, or “Mrs.”, -san is almost universally added to a person’s name and can be used in formal and informal contexts for both genders.

Manga the Week of 4/28/21
SEAN: The end of April and there’s still so much going on.
Airship has two digital-early debuts. I Have a Secret (Kakushigoto) is the latest one-shot by the author of I Want to Eat Your Pancreas, and is not related to the manga and anime series Kakushigoto. It’s all about unspoken feelings in high school.
MICHELLE: Ooh. This sounds my speed.
ASH: I’ve enjoyed the manga adaptations of this author’s works; I really need to make a point to read some of the originals.
SEAN: The Strange Adventure of a Broke Mercenary (Kuitsume Youhei no Gensou Kitan) is a fantasy series about a man, the sole survivor of a battle that killed off all those important to him, who hires himself out as a merc. Sadly, most people just want to use him. Can he find an ally? This is a long-running LN series in Japan, with 15 volumes to date.
We also get the last of the deluge of Alice in the Country of digital editions, the light novel Alice in the Country of Diamonds: Bet On My Heart. Lastly, there’s a 3rd volume of Roll Over and Die out early digitally.
Denpa Books’ website says they have the debut of Shino Can’t Say Her Name (Shino-chan wa Jibun no Namae ga Ienai), a one-shot from the creator of Flowers of Evil, Happiness, etc. that promises to be a bit lighter in tone than those titles. It ran in Ohta Shuppan’s Pocopoco, and is about a girl with severe social anxiety. This seems to take a less comedic take than Komi Can’t Communicate.

SEAN: Ghost Ship has Destiny Lovers 6, Parallel Paradise 5, World’s End Harem 10, and Yokai Girls 13.
J-Novel Club has a quartet of titles, as we get Invaders of the Rokujouma!? 36, Record of Wortenia War 10, Seirei Gensouki: Spirit Chronicles 14, and Sorcerous Stabber Orphen: The Reckless Journey 3 (manga).
Debuting in print for Kodansha is Chasing After Aoi Koshiba (Kyou, Koshiba Aoi ni Aetara), a yuri manga from Ichijinsha’s Comic REX. It’s got the writer of Masamune-kun’s Revenge (ehh…) and the artist of Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki (yay!). A girl hopes to meet up with her first love at a reunion. (Yes. Yes, I know. It got bumped at the last minute.)
ASH: I thought that sounded familiar!
SEAN: They’ve also got the 8th Bakemonogatari manga and the 8th Kino’s Journey manga, which is also the final volume in the adaptation.
The digital debut is And Yet, You Are So Sweet (Na no ni, Chigira-kun ga Amasugiru), a Dessert title about a girl who just got rejected and the popular guy who hears about this and offers to help with her problem. But will she fall for him?
MICHELLE: Sounds a bit like Say I Love You., but I’m totally down for it.
ANNA: Me too, if only it wasn’t a digital only title because I will likely forget that it exists.
SEAN: We also get The Dawn of the Witch 2, DAYS 23, Harem Marriage 4, Those Snow White Notes 3, What I Love About You 5, and When We’re in Love 7.
MICHELLE: Yay for more DAYS! Also, how am I this far behind on Those Snow White Notes already?!
ASH: It does seem to be on a quick release schedule!
SEAN: One Peace Books has The Rising of the Shield Hero 19.
Seven Seas’ debut is Dai Dark, the latest series from the creator of Dorohedoro. It runs in Shogakukan’s Monthly Shonen Sunday, and should appeal to all fans of her previous work, and likely will be just as violent as her previous work.
ASH: I am so looking forward to this one!
SEAN: Also out: Alice & Zoroku 8, The Ancient Magus’ Bride 14, The Demon Girl Next Door 2, The Legend of Dororo and Hyakkimaru 3, Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid: Kanna’s Daily Life 8, My Room Is a Dungeon Rest Stop 4, and Syrup: A Yuri Anthology 3.

Yen On’s debut next week is a two-fer light novel adaptation of a Makoto Shinkai work: 5 Centimeters per Second + Children Who Chase Lost Voices. Now you can be depressed but also moved in prose!
ASH: I somehow missed that there were two 5 Centimeters per Second novels – Vertical released another one a couple years ago, too.

Four Yen Press debuts. After School Hanako-kun (Houkago Shounen Hanako-kun) is a comedy spinoff of Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun. It runs in PFantasy, which I can only assume is like a spinoff of Shonen Panpan? No, that just sounds like a dirty Japanese schoolboy. Anyway, it’s probably an online spinoff of the main magazine.
ASH: I like the main series, so will likely give this one a try, too.
SEAN: I Was a Bottom-Tier Bureaucrat for 1,500 Years, and the Demon King Made Me a Minister (Hira Yakunin Yatte 1500-nen, Maou no Chikara de Daijin ni Sare Chaimashita) is the manga adaptation of the light novel we saw last month. It ran in Gangan Online.
I’m the Catlords’ Manservant (Boku wa Oneko-sama no Geboku desu) is about, as many manga are, a child having to pay off their parents’ massive debt. This one does so by serving shapeshifting cats. This runs in GFantasy, which means it’ll interest Melinda, probably.
ANNA: I am just amused by the description of this manga.
ASH: New cat manga!
MELINDA: I HAVE BEEN SUMMONED. Also, yes. Yes. BRING IT TO ME.
SEAN: Your Turn to Die: Majority Vote Death Game (Kimi ga Shine -Tasuuketsu Death Game-) reminds us that death game manga are still apparently a thing. It’s based on a game, runs in Shonen Ace, and… well, it’s a death game manga. Come on.

ANNA: I was slightly underwhelmed by the first volume but maybe the second volume will sell me on the series.
