It's September 30th, the Republic of Botswana's Independence Day or “Boipuso.” Today we commemorate Botswana's Declaration of Independence from the United Kingdom on September 30, 1966, with fireworks, parades, fairs, picnics, concerts, family reunions, political speeches and ceremonies, and other events celebrating Botswana's proud heritage, history, and culture.

Since independence, Botswana has been governed by a representative republic, with a consistent record of uninterrupted democratic elections and the lowest perceived corruption ranking in Africa since at least 1998. Mokgweetsi Masisi is the country’s fifth President. He’s been serving since April, 2018.

Botswana is an upper-middle-income country, with one of the world's fastest-growing economies, dominated by mining, cattle, and tourism.  Its relatively high gross national income per capita give it a high standard of living and the highest Human Development Index of Sub-Saharan Africa. Botswana is a member of the African Union, the Southern African Development Community, the Commonwealth of Nations, and the United Nations. When I was in college applying to study abroad in Japan for a semester (which I never got to do, but that's another story), we had to write like... an essay on our privilege and shit wrt the locals. Now I think this kinda makes sense, since the school also had study abroad programs in like Botswana and shit (presumably you could problematize these in various ways), but for Japan it was kinda ridiculous. One of my classmates asked me "what would you even write about (as an American)? Your mutual love of colonizing other countries?"

December starts out strong with a daily bombardment of tons of stories about Meghan and/or Harry. Their PR backs off in the middle of the month, but only barely. Luckily for us, there is salvation: Meghan gets her first, second, third, and fourth dose of royal criticism.

Like I mentioned in the November 2017 timeline, this month sees Meghan pulling her support from Star Magazine, US Weekly, and E Online. People Magazine begins to earn her loyalty instead.

Ok, apparently I exceeded the limit of links that can be in a Tumblr post. the December edition is going to be split up into smaller segments. I've got a solution for how to fix this going forward, but it's going to take some time to figure out how to implement it.

Very interesting page 6 art>cle. Pretty long for page 6 too. She's desperate to overcome the failure image and get a new deal. Several interesting remarks about them both . She loves being famous. Harry is down to earth but it isn't this planet earth. And as long as he had money he could happily live in Botswana away from limelight. But she needs a deal.

They’re desperately trying to hype her new project, but there’s no narrative, no story, nothing… it’s pure vaporware.

I actually like the wellness bs for her. I think it’s a good fit. However, I don’t think it’s going to work without a big divorce narrative behind it.

They don’t seem to realize that her Montecito lifestyle is not aspirational because it’s now associated with pap harassment, security worries, tabloid lawsuits, family strife, drug use, and sad-sack birthday parties for the kids. That’s what we saw in the documentary and the biography, and no one wants to be a part of that.

She needs a big event (or pseudo-event at least) to put some distance between herself and the images from that documentary (crying in a luxurious bathroom with her head wrapped in a towel, checking the phone while lying on a Hermes blanket, etc…). The pap chase in NY certainly didn’t help, and I doubt Invictus will be a gamechanger.

I like to imagine most Outworlders don't speak English if we were being realistic with workdbuilding. The royal family and their advisors would probably interact with Earthrealm officials during visits but regular Outwrolders probably wouldn't.

The only reason they speak English is for our convenience but realistically most probably shouldn't and it'd be funny if the language barrier popped up at times.

Like I imagine Quan Chi didn't speak English initially so he didn't register Titan Shang was talking to him when he was doing his job in the mines. Like Titan Shang thinks Quan Chi is ignoring him...when in reality Quan Chi simply doesn't register he's talking to him at all.

That is exactly my thought - worldbuilding wise, common Outworlders shouldn’t speak English or any other Earthrealm’s dialects, as they do not have a constant contact with totally foreign cultures from Liu Kang’s realm. I don’t think we ever heard of any vital trade between Earthrealm and Outworld and the portal between realms isn’t that easily accessible for people to just snuck in, and it is not just about Outworlders being wary of Earthrealmers but also Liu Kang decided to keep existence of other realms in secret from majority of his people. So the contact is limited and let’s not forget that the same as Earthrealm, Outworld is not culturally homogeneous realm either, as there is many different cultures coexisting there, like Edenians, Shokan, Centaurians, Saurian, Osh-Tekk to name few. So learning additional Earthrealm's dialects may be more difficult to some of those people than to others.

It makes sense for the Royal Family, their palace guard (Umgadi), advisors and for some military officers like General Shao and Reiko to learn English and possibly other earthrealm dialects, as such knowledge is vital to diplomacy and state security. 

It is understandable that the games use English as common language for simplicity, however 

It really is sad how the cultural/language barriers are not exploited as it has such a great potential (the closest things are: Johnny’s references to Alien that Kung Lao misunderstand as Cage calling Tanya a slur and was both offended and confused by the whole thing and Mileena thinking that drone is some kind of magic)

I don’t like the implication in Liu Kang’s timeline that Great Britain again influenced the whole world to the point English is the commonly used language because with that implication comes the question: did some Earthrealmers again suffer under the regime of other countries, be it under colonization or losing their country's independence. I mean, it is Liu Kang’s timeline, why Royal Family don’t speak in his native language as they had the longest contact with the Fire Lord and English is not, logically thinking, Raiden’s native language either?

Let’s just agree I’m very picky about this issue and I would love all the shenanigans coming from characters speaking in different languages and sometimes failing - or on purpose making it difficult to communicate well. Or, as the Lin Kuei faction has the number of native-speakers from different cultures (China, Czech, Botswana), they could utilize other languages as their “secret dialect”. Like Lin Kuei brothers waiting for Liu Kang, instead of speaking English between themselves, they could talk in Tomas’ native language because the chance Kung Lao, Raiden or Liu Kang’s servants would understand Czech is slimmer than them understanding English. 

I’m seriously crying over the untapped language potential Mortal Kombat has for years. 

As for Titan Shang Tsung, I’m gonna trust he was smarter than using English, when Quan Chi was born in mines and spent his whole life there. The mortal Shang Tsung consuming souls for ages most likely knew and could fluently use a vast number of dialects, so I imagine Titan Shang Tsung would figure out pretty quickly that no one in mines used earthrealm language and talked to Quan Chi in a way he could perfectly understand him, especially since “Damashi” needed Quan Chi’s trust to process the great plan of his.

I need more of the Steven Universe AU purely to see what everyone's fusions would be like. The triplet's fusion would be so freaking awesome, any of the sibling trio fusions would be a terrifying powerhouse, I want the sibling fusions, I need to know what the fusion of Luisa and Mirabel would be like, the fusion of Mirabel and Antonio would be so adorable, and I want to find out which Isabela fusion would be the most chaotic/destructive/unhinged, heck, give us the fusions of Alma with each of her kids and grandkids, it would be a great opportunity for visual representation of how her pressure and expectations negatively impact each of them. I bet it would take people a solid minute to realize Julieta and Mirabel had fused, Mirabel is so much her mama's clone you don't notice the difference unless you're paying close attention or know them really well. Please, PLEASE give us more, I even have ideas for the rest of the Madrigals gem types. Pedro would be another Diamond, if Alma's a Diamond then it would make the most sense if Pedro was one too, he's likely been shattered. Pyrope definitely fits Dolores and Camilo is absolutely an Orange Spinel, Antonio should be Tiger's Eye. I think Lapis Lazuli is best suited for Isabela, beautiful and upper class yet extremely powerful, and Mirabel could be a defective Bismuth that doesn't have the muscle of a normal Bismuth and can't build to save her life, expressing the natural creativity of her gem type through unconventional means and making up for her lack of brawn with brain

Firstly, I should say that not everyone fuses. I have to vaguely follow SU’s plot, but…

The triplets (or, well, mainly Pepa and Bruno) did secretly fuse when they were first made. They frequently caused chaos and got intro trouble, partially why it then became so taboo. It was already viewed as bad, but knowing what damage could be caused to the perfect empire… it became a lot more of a serious offence.

Some of the siblings/cousins haven’t fused together, so I’d need to know who you wanted to know about specifically.

And none of the parents have fused with the children.

Luisa and Mirabel are oddly enough quite like Sardonyx as a fusion. Luisa shares a lot of traits with both Garnet and Pearl, and then combined with Mirabel, I’d be lying if they weren’t oddly close to Sardonyx. In saying that, they could also be Garnet herself - a lot of Luisa and Mirabel’s interactions are akin to Ruby and Sapphire respectively. However, they are also very anxious together, so take that as you will for their fusion.

So, twelve hours post, here is my first round of thoughts:

I will never recover from all the baby clips. NEVER. RECOVER.

Doria is the classiest, most dignified person in history. That poor woman deserves a medal for what she endured so strongly.

The producers did such a fantastic job of weaving the love-storytelling in with the historical discussions and the present-day narrative. And MAN what a love story. I really thought I had a good sense of them before, but I feel so different now. I see them and their love in a new light. Which, hey, isn't that the exact point of this whole thing? So, mission accomplished. I am completely warmed and enchanted.

I especially feel I understand so much more about who they were before each other. I love how dedicated the producers were to establishing Meghan's pre-Harry personhood and just how much she lost to be with him. And I was so unspeakably moved by Harry's recounting of his relationship to the people of Lesotho and Botswana. How they took him in when he had no place he felt at home. How it fundamentally shifted his development into the man he would be become. Genuinely one of the most beautiful stories in the whole production.

Meghan is better than me because if I had to meet my future in-laws and there in my kitchen was Kate Middleton looking at me the way Kate Middleton looks at people, I would be on the next plane back to America. EXPEDITIOUSLY.

Also um can we take a sec to laugh at how Cambridge stans (esp those in the rota) are taking personal offense to Harry's cheeky but astute observation about his male relatives marrying for convenience rather than love? SO funny. I think he was very obviously talking about his parents, but hey if you wanna be like "This is so clearly about William and Kate" like . . . Ok mama, if the tiara fucking fits!!!!

Meghan is better at communicating the warm, gooey, happy parts of the story, and Harry is FAR better at communicating the serious, difficult, upsetting parts of the story -- the "shocking revelations," if you will. Meg is seemingly still struggling with this incredibly frustrating naivete surrounding their situation, and it does not come across the screen well to me. But that is a discussion for others to have, so that's all I'll say on that.

The Black historians and political commentators they brought on were absolutely critical to nailing that side of the story. Afua Hirsch was my very favorite.

I've already gotten at least one anon asking about my perspective on the addressing of Harry's SS costume. I appreciate the interest, but no. I am the granddaughter of a Holocaust survivor. My family and I have been discussing how to internalize and process Harry specifically, as well as people like him, for years now. And it's not something I'm willing to do over the internet with strangers. Sorry, but I hope you can understand.

Ashleigh's appearance knocked me BACK omg. I'm so touched to see how they connected all those years ago, and I hope they have found a way to reconnect, away from all that sabotage.

As I posted just before, the way they are juuuuust planting the seeds for the Jason storyline to come . . . literal fucking chills.

I love that they know which photos of them are iconic. When the umbrella shot showed up I was like "Yeah they know that was history right there" 😌

Please believe me when I tell you that I am not usually one to be all "Ohhhhh Diana ohhhhh she's looking down on them ohhhh this or that." Lol. But the clip of Archie reaching his little hand to her photo on the wall, and not to her face, which babies are neurologically wired to focus on, but to her hands. Yeah a bitch might just have teared up or whatever 🥲

I thought the whole thing was really well produced. So far, it's not the nuclear war all those panicking lil media experts were predicting. But my sense is that Volume I was very much an introduction to lay the groundwork for whatever we're about to go through in Volume II. And I cannot wait. For the time being, I am so over the moon to be granted this truly moving glimpse into what a beautiful life Harry and Meghan have built for themselves.

A/N: I had one idea then ended up going in a completely different direction.

Summary: Timothée reflects on the beginning of his obsession for his only love!

His Only Love

He was in awe of her and he had been since they met in 2017, he was doing press for a movie and she was in the country for a charity event where she was also being recognised for her humanitarian work around the world. Y/N Y/L/N was the most beautiful human being Timmy had ever laid his eyes on. Her kindness and her humility only enhanced her beauty. What he loved most about her was her passion when she spoke about one of her causes, wether that was getting medicine and food supplies to orphans of war in war torn countries or even the wildlife conservation in Botswana, Africa. She was incredible. After their first meeting he tried to learn everything he could about her. That was difficult as she rarely did any interviews, she preferred to do her work quietly and keep her private life private. The rare times she did talk to journalists she kept it about her latest projects and charity events. And even those were far and few between. He found one interview she did on YouTube when she was in the movie White Oleander where she played a small part as one of the bad girls.

He watched that over and over again just to listen to her speak, she was around 14-15 in the interview but she spoke as if she was a grown woman, wise beyond her years and older than she actually was.

Timothée was fascinated by her.

He knew he had to see her again, maybe ask her out for dinner or even a coffee. He just wanted to talk to her about anything and everything, even if they talked about the weather.

His first time at the Oscars she was there with her brother. She was presenting an award for Best Actor. He watched her talking briefly to a few journalists on the red carpet and then moved on to the long line of screaming fans. The amount of time she spent with the fans and stood and spoke to them, amazed Timmy. He pointed her out to his parents and told his mother that this was the woman he had been telling them about! His mother just smiled knowingly and patted his cheek lovingly. He watched her one stage, completely in awe of her. He was so busy watching y/n he didn’t even hear his name being called until he felt his co-star slap him on the shoulder. She was presenting the award to him. She wrapped his arms around him tightly and whispered in his ear ‘Congratulations Timmy I’m so proud of you’. He hugged her back smiling and made his speech then went backstage with y/n and began a conversation with her.

That was four years ago. After months of going back and forth she finally agreed to go on a date with him and they became inseparable and been together ever since. She stuck with him through all the PR relationships assuring him she knew what they had was strong! They kept their relationship private despite rumours going around and tabloids trying to catch them together, they succeeded in staying under the radar.

Tonight they were both at the same event celebrating more of her achievements and he couldn’t be happier. He loved celebrating her and worshiping her. He was in awe of her just as he was four years ago. And he would continue to be so when they were old and grey sitting on their front porch watching their grandchildren grow up.

I'm not sure if you've discussed this already but do you think who's afraid of little old me is inspired by who's afraid of Virginia Woolf? The reason I ask is because Elizabeth Taylor & Richard Burton are in the movie and I know you say that's a Haylor thing.

Hey great ask! I do think the song title is a reference to Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf which Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor starred in the film adaptation of. The full film is on You Tube. It is about an unconventional marriage. The couple drink too much, are unfaithful/are open and hurt each other emotionally. Without spoilers there is a plot of delusion with Elizabeth Taylor's character.

Taylor has likened her and Harry to Taylor and Burton before, in Ready for It? she sings "he can be my jailer, Burton to this Taylor" and the Wildest Dreams music video has references Burton and Taylor's marriage in Botswana, like Harry and Taylor they were both very famous and on/off, unable to move on.

It will be interesting if the song references the actors or film, or both.

Hello! I hope Camilla will wear the flame lily brooch for their visit to Kenya. I love this brooch and it would be very poignant as the late Queen wore it when coming back as Queen from her tour in Kenya after her father’s death

Another possibility could be the Botswana brooch as the late Queen used to wear it for Commonwealth visits/engagements

modelsof-color is a great resource, and I also recommend Botswana based fashion photographer @/rorisang-lu who has some great unique styles and a variety of Black models on their blog, which is criminally small imo for how nice their works are. @/nyc-looks isn’t focused on Black models only, but as a street fashion blog they have some interesting and varied looks and people on there. Houston based couture house @/houseofenid also features a lot of Black models
