I wanted to ask: it was my understanding that Zanzibar was/is an Arab state (basing off of what I've read, most of the population today is African, but the state was created by and for Arab traders). Is Miss Zanzibar supposed to represent that Arab side, or a native group?

You are correct that historically, the state of Zanzibar was established and largely run by Arab traders, specifically those from Oman. It's Oman who actually represents the (mostly, but not exclusively) Omani Arab traders that settled in Zanzibar, as the running of the Omani Empire was heavily tied to Zanzibar, with the Sultanate of Muscat and Oman going so far as to move the capital from Muscat to Stone Town, Zanzibar.

I’m getting super into learning about the trade in the Indian Ocean (East Africa, parts of Asia all). I’m American too- here in the US, all we hear about is Atlantic trade, slavery or otherwise. Learning about trade in another Ocean entirely just seems so eye opening. It’s like, another world out there, even if you might not hear about as much…and on that note, do you have any ideas/headcanons on shipping/trading in that region pre-colonization? 🤓🙃
