Today's bird: the Mourning Dove (@bringinsexybackk69)

During mating season when a male dove is chasing off another male, the female (if mated to one of them) will follow along for the ride (she's just a girl)

They mate for life

When looking for food they can store seeds in a pocket of the esophagus called the crop, untilnthey can find a safe place to digest it

They can fly in speeds up to 55mph

For newly hatched chicks both parents produce what is called "crop milk" or "pigeon milk" to feed to the chicks for the first four days of life

They are able to safely consume brackish (salt) water that si about half as salty as the ocean (much more than we can handle), meaning they can survive quite well in deserts

They're also one of the most abundant and widespread birds in north america

A lot of birds fill their beak with water and tip their heads back to drink, but mourning doves are one of the only birds that don't need to because thay are capable of creating suction
