Ok so sit down and buckle up kiddos and grab some snacks bc this is a helluva ride

Little background info: I have been a section leader for both my junior and senior years now. When the new freshmen came in my first year of being section leader I was hyped as hell. And then this new freshman whips out a lighter and lights it WHILE WE’RE INSIDE THE SCHOOL MIGHT I ADD with a straight face looking off into the distance before we ask her to put it away. She also always has a pocket knife on her that we found on the ground during band camp. I’ll call her POS. 

I tried to like POS I really did, but then she turned out to be a bigoted racist asshole (she also drinks deer blood straight from the corpse and simps over jeffery dahmer so even more red flags). It was extremely hard for me to treat her like I did with the other people in my section, but I managed to treat her the same as the other people and avoided her for the most part (thank god she wasn’t in my subsection I would’ve actually gone insane)

Flash forward to this year. Covid was hitting full force and we had to quarantine for the first two months of our season setting us back by a lot. She was wishywashy about rejoining but as the most senior leader of my section my band director was on my ass about getting a straight answer from her and fast. So I kinda had to force her to give me an answer (which she told me she was doing it quickly which leads me to think she already knew she was doing it) so she already was going into the season hating my guts

When we finally had an in person rehearsal for the first time, she wasn’t wearing a mask so when I asked her where it was she looked at me like I was the dumbass and said in a matter-of-fact tone “it’s in my pocket” and pointed to the confederate flag bandana hanging out of her pocket. Those four words told me that this season was going to be a fuckin long one with her. I just deadpanned (she couldn’t see it tho bc mask, sunglasses, and floppy hat blocking my entire face) and said “I’d rather it be on your face. (band director and marching instructor’s names) will have my ass if they see you not wearing one.” She rolls her eyes and puts it on (at least it was over her nose)

A few months go by with me telling her constantly to put on a mask bc I am responsible for my section and I’d be damned if one of them got sick bc of one idiot being stupid that I could prevent. She is getting madder and madder with each passing rehearsal. 

Band camp rolls around and it changed from 5 13 hour days to 15 3 hour ones and I am already done with her bs. We get our dots and I mentally groan bc she’s next to me for the vast majority of the show. She is between me (an asthmatic) and my close friend (vvv immunocompromised and also hates her, I’ll call her S) so now I’m more worried about covid going around the section. It was in this time that I find out that at least 5 other people out of 20 also have pre existing conditions that make them susceptible. So now I make it even more my mission to make her wear a mask. 

It was in the middle of band camp when she is yet again not wearing a mask (we were just marching without instruments) and I turn to her and as kindly as possible (it was the second time that day) asked her to put on her mask. She once again rolls her eyes and says “ya know, (band director) walked past me 3 times and hasn’t said shit, so I think I’m gonna listen to him and not you.” S and another friend of mine looks over in shock cuz she just talked back to me. They were about to say something but I wove them off. POS wants to fuck with me? Fine. I’ll just go full force with this. She wants petty?? I’ll give her petty, I’ve been holding off all season. 

So I’m marching there for the next twenty minutes quietly seething and counting more aggressively. She’s getting annoyed, but I pull the section leader card and tell her that she needs to be counting as loud as I am bc her feet was lowkey off time. After we break off for a gush and go (very short water break), I go straight to my band director and use my limited water break to tell him what she told me. He apologizes and says that he thought she was just taking a breather. He tells her to put on a mask and she does so and glares at me the rest of the rehearsal. 

She blocks me on all social media and I obviously clown on her in private with the other section leader (he’s more of a pacifist and never really told her to wear a mask which kinda pissed me off but I understood) until she makes a passing comment to my other friend about using the knife she kept in her boot. Now he tells me cuz he’s a good friend and I’m shitting myself at that point bc holy shit I might get shanked. 

I think about telling the band director but I realize that there’s no proof of her saying this and she could easily get out of this so it’s kinda pointless to tell anyone. Plus if she did shank me, she’d get into so much trouble and I’d be laughing at her from my grave/hospital bed. 

Many rehearsals go by and she still refuses to wear a mask so after one rehearsal S and I went to the band director and reminded him about our conditions and told him about how we were worried for our safety (I also told him abotu the other vulunerable ppl in the section) and he says he’s gonna do something. Next rehearsal he gives POS a warning and she begrudgingly wears a mask for the rest of the rehearsal. The next rehearsal rolls by and she isn’t wearing a mask (again) and he sends her home. Major victory for S and I.

The next sectional tho was something I wasn’t expecting. I get there like 10 minutes before it starts like I usually do in a good mood. I get out of my car and go to grab my stuff when a massive white truck with a busted muffler pulls up into the parking space next to me with a cloud of black smoke. The window rolls down and reveals POS’s dad and POS herself in the passanger seat. 

Of course I’m thinking that this is the day I die and start mentally preparing to yell for help to my other section members 100 feet away on the field already.

Mans starts to lecture me saying things like “it’s unhealthy to wear a mask outside bc it’s like a pitri dish under there. 6th grade science!” (I am not joking or overexaggerating with this, he actually said that). I really wanted to say “well, 7th grade science says otherwise, but you wouldn’t know that bc I’m sure you didn’t pass 6th grade, but go off ig” but I didn’t bc I didn’t want to get shanked or disappear randomly. I just tell him that I am only doing what my band director told me to do and that there are tons of people (myself included) that can really get hurt from just being in contact with covid. He says that’s bullshit and tries to tell me that I’m an idiot before I cut him off by telling him once again that I am just trying to protect my section and that the sectional was going to start soon so I didn’t have the time for this. I walk away leaving him trying to keep talking to me and soon enough POS gets out of the car and follows me to the field giving me a smug smile on her unmasked face before she puts it on when she sees the other section leader stroll up. 

Lemme paint the picture for you: this guy (a 6′something burly guy in his 50′s that I know has like two felonies under his belt) pulls up next to me (a 5′2 17 year old ball of anxiety that drives a small yellow car) and starts to borderline yell at me. Traumatizing. I was shaking for the rest of the sectional and I spent the rest of the season looking over my shoulder looking for the glint of a knife swingin at me

Now I’m pretty sure she’s suspended bc she was caught with a knife on school property and she wore a confederate t-shirt to school, but I would be lying if I said I don’t still look over my shoulder or speed up when I drive past her house lmao

haha no problem ! i don't mind you asking multiple questions.

G. Do you write your story from start to finish, or do you write the scenes out of order?

i usually write in order from the first chapter to the last. for each chapter, before i do any actual writing, i write out everything that's gonna happen in the chapter, like a synopsis. and then once i have every chapter sorted out, then i physically write them out one by one.

if it's a one off fic, i might write out some dialogue randomly if i think of it and want it to occur but don't know where yet. i've learned to do this just bc i have the memory of a spoon lol

i see every fic i write as movie or show, so it's easy to go "scene" by "scene" rather than sporadically.

N. Is there a fic you wish someone else would write (or finish) for you?

yes. the sequel to "give your heart a break". it's up for grabs yall lol jk

S. Any fandom tropes you can’t resist?

honestly, idk if this is a trope, but i love when ppl write colby as sarcastic and dry and a bit broody. especially the sarcastic part.

i write colby as a lot more sarcastic than i actually think he is. i usually write colby kinda like how my humor is irl, but i don't think that's really realistic. i feel like my humor (or how i write colby) is probs closer to sam rather than colby lol

T. Any fandom tropes you can’t stand?

um... not a trope, but solby. i don't read or interact with fics that have solby in them. and i think the reason why i dislike solby in fics so much is bc some fans read those stories and then believe it. like, if you enjoy reading solby fics, that's fine. but don't ship them irl. they clearly love each other dearly but only in a PLATONIC way.

i mean i have a problem in general with fans taking two guys who are just friends, and that are real ppl, and trying to find some weird way to see if they're gay or secretly dating. i've seen it in so many fandoms, it's ridiculous.

also, (and this isn't really a trope or something i hate, but i find it funny), that anytime a story is set in hs with snc, they somehow make them so scary and thuggish lol like... snc at 18 years old looked like this:

Recommend some good folk metal music please

:D i never thought i’d see the day when someone actually wants to know more about the music i listen to *cracks knuckles* my time has come

I apologize in advance for this novel. Feel free to skip to the recommended tracks lol.

Most folk metal comes out of northern Europe (Finland, heavily) though you can find it all over the world (Hu Band comes to mind but I mean, it’s on every continent). I am one of those people with like, a small handful of favorite bands that I listen to mercilessly so I am sure that I am only representing a miniscule percentage of what’s available out there. What’s great is that folk metal is much more versatile than many other genres in its sound; the essence of folk metal is simply to 1) utilize traditional (or rather, in the sense of a metal band, non-traditional) instruments such as violin, accordion, brass ensemble, bagpipes, what have you, and 2) have lyrical themes which revolve around regional folklore, mythology, cultural heritage, or place (what I particularly like is a frequent reverence and respect for nature). Other genres of metal (death, black) have the second element but not the first, and tend to incorporate darker overall tones and consistently harsher or lo-fi vocal styles and sounds. Folk metal can be a gateway genre into metal and can often be quite hopepunk (if you will). Because of these criteria, the actual sound of folk metal can range from sea shanties to ‘spooky walk in the midnight woods’ to scathing social commentary to SHOTS SHOTS SHOTS SHOTS SH

Basically you can find a range of styles within the genre that fit what you’re looking for, from those that have an orchestral, ballad feel, to things that border on death metal but have a hurdy-gurdy in there. There’s also a much higher percentage of female-led folk metal bands than other metal genres.

I’ll go through my top picks.

Turisas. These motherfuckers. My boys.

Turisas is based in Finland, but sing primarily in English (with occasional Finnish, a smidge of Greek and Swedish too). Four albums out to date, fifth in progress. Sound is absolutely fucking bonkers god tier shit, if I may say so myself. Every single song sounds like you’ve been transported into an Iliad metal musical. Heavy use of a full orchestra and choir, along with sick violin and accordion solos. Their lyrical themes focus heavily on ancient Greco-Roman and Viking military history - but before you raise any red flags, rest assured they’re liberal as fuck and trust me the tea is scalding when Mathias feels like making a Point about Then and Now. No seriously, I don’t know how to express the beauty and depth of his songwriting - Mathias Nygård is an incredibly talented composer, musician, and songwriter (nay, POET), and an extremely intelligent and down to earth guy. There are plenty of bands that are happy to write Viking songs about pillaging and glorious death in battle and all that (Alestorm comes to mind), those are a dime a dozen. Turisas makes history come to life in a way that transports you back in time and thrusts you into the living breathing world of the past. They deal with the horrors and tragedy of war from both sides, consequences and motivations, fears and pride and loss, home and family, despair and hope. They write songs about people, big and small, and their role in weaving the great tapestry of history. And the best part is that it’s informed - Mathias does his damn research and the tales he tells are rooted in fact. He brings them to life so we can experience what it must have been like for those real living people, with the goal of forcing us to confront our own selves in them. He’s a modern Homer, I shit you not. 

Did I mention there’s a song about pirates that’s actually really complex and nuanced, about how the hypocrisy and vile colonialist deeds of emperors makes them no different than the criminals they persecute?

Or that they do a badass cover of Rasputin?? yeah?????

Anyway enough gushing. Their second and third albums (The Varangian Way, Stand Up And Fight) are consecutive concept albums that follow the story of the Varangian Guard (the legendary Viking battalion that defended Alexander the Great) so the songs are actually chronologically linked to tell this epic tale. It’s a fucking listen, lads. The Varangian Way is probably my favorite album. But all their albums are top notch. 

My favorite songs: End of An Empire (this one comes for 2020 hard), Piece by Piece (AKA die fascists 2k20), Cursed Be Iron, Among Ancestors, Greek Fire, Miklagard Overture (you gotta earn this song tho, it’s the finale)

Good first listen picks/hits: Battle Metal, To Holmgard and Beyond, March of the Varangian Guard, Ten More Miles, One More

Finntroll. These other motherfuckers. My other boys.

Another big name in the Finnish folk metal scene. As you can see, their band revolves both aesthetically and musically around Scandinavian troll folklore. Yall weird elf-fuckers who like the really big ears? Here you go. Look at those ears. They’re good friends with Turisas. Both love their facepaint.

Musical style leans much more towards black and death metal influenced, with a heavier, fuller sound and growling vocals. But it’s an incredibly rich and creative aural tapestry, with layers of masterfully executed sound that’s a real delight to lose yourself in. Use of fiddle, brass, keyboard, accordion, and banjo, and strong folk melodies make their sound unmistakable and unique. They are known for their ‘black humppa’ beat, which basically gives the effect of feeling the primal need to stomp around loudly to their music. It’s great cardio. They also utilize orchestra in some great intro tracks. They know their stuff.

The majority of their songs are sung in Swedish (they do some English cover songs which are FANTASTIC holy SHIT), but don’t let that stop you. The mood and power and emotion of their music transcend language, and you can be sure the lyrics are about either trolls, witches, the dark woods, spirits, or something of that ilk. I think Swedish as a language works very well with this kind of music, and honestly having it in English would lose something. 

They have been around a long time and so have many albums, but I personally have only listened to the last three which feature their current singer, Mathias Lillmåns, whom I adore. Those albums are Nifelvind, Blodsvept, and their recent release Vredesvävd (that i’ve had on repeat since I got it three weeks ago). I’m sure their other ones are great too, I just can’t make a personal recommendation since I haven’t heard them. 

My favorite songs: Galgasång, Tiden Utan Tid, Ylaren, Skogsdotter, Två Ormar, Ett Norrskensdåd, Skövlarens Död

Good first listen picks/hits: Forsen, Under Bergets Rot, Häxbrygd, Trollhammaren (older song), Solsagan

I’ll go through these other ones a little faster, I haven’t heard quite as much from them but I do love them.

Korpiklaani. 

Great, full folk sound, utilizes a lot of folk instruments including some less commonly seen ones like hurdy gurdy. Songs are mostly in Finnish but plenty in English too. Jonne Järvelä has a really unique voice that grows on you, but it’s not for everyone. The band started as Sami folk, and Jonne is trained in Sami yoik singing, which makes an appearance in a few songs. I prefer the Finnish tracks, as a lot of the English ones are drinking songs lmao. But again, really well-executed music with layers of sound that keeps you hooked. I haven’t heard enough of their discography to really recommend enough to cover everything. 

Song picks: Minä Näin Vedessä Neidon, Metsälle, Ämmänhauta, Lempo

Moonsorrow.

Definitely a darker, black-folk band. Probably not a great pick if you aren’t accustomed to black metal - very long tracks (8-15 mins is standard), growling/shrieking vocals, a ‘thinner’ but encompassing wall of sound usual of black metal, but with the benefit of wonderfully entrancing dark folk elements and chants. It’s done really really well. Sung almost entirely in Finnish (apart from cover tracks). Lyrically, focuses on themes of Norse mythology, man vs nature and similar elements. Definitely one of those bands whose music gets you into a zone. I can lose serious time just putting a whole album on and letting my mind wander elsewhere. My favorite album is Jumalten Aika. 

Song picks: Ruttolehto Sis. Päivättömän Päivän Kansa (my fucking FAVORITE), Suden Tunti (well known hit), and also uhh check out their cover of Non Serviam cause it’s a fucking banger

Other bands that I like what I’ve heard but really can’t say much about them, whoops - Tyr (from the Faroe Islands, great stuff, Faroese is a baller language), Ensiferum, Nightwish (female-led).... I’m open to suggestions. Like I said, there are folk metal bands all over the world, and each is intrinsically linked to a sense of place and cultural identity that makes them unique. I’d love to hear about more tbh.

my 2018 favorites

a personal favorites list for my own benefit bc i have a shit memory

Movies: i saw a surprising amount of movies in theaters this year and finally took full advantage of Prime video and watched a ton of movies this year. Here’s some of my favs

-The Shape of Water (2017): I had to consult both twitter and my theater ticket but ya this movie came out in January (wide release). Such a magical movie, I love Guillermo del Toro’s style and tsow is just a pleasure to experience

-Love, Simon (2018): god i wish i had this movie when i was in high school and im so happy that younger queer people have this movie now

-Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again (2018): i saw this movie as soon as i got back to the US from Russia this summer and felt so many emotions during the entirety of the film. I love ABBA and their music always makes me think of my mom and gramma. 

-Crazy Rich Asians (2018): in the year of good rom-coms, this one was a stand out. i laughed, i cried (a lot), and i just loved this movie.

-The Florida Project (2017): definitely not a happy movie, but i thought it did a great job showing the parts of Orlando that aren’t part of the magic kingdom.

TV Shows: I watch so much tv holy shit

-The Good Place (2016-): I started watching tgp in January and it has been a consistent favorite all year. I actually took quite a few ethics & morals classes in college so i always get a kick out of the philosophical discussions. But omg the characters in this show are so wonderful and i would be lying if i said this show didn’t make me want to strive to be a better person

-The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (2017-): I have rewatched this series so many times. I really don’t like gilmore girls so i was surprised that i loved this ASP show so much. im always a sucker for period pieces and this show is also funny as hell. the midge/susie duo (in every context) is my fuckin bread and butter

-The Americans (2013-2018): i can never get anyone to watch the americans with me but god do i love this show. it’s one of the few “serious” dramas that i’ve ever gotten into and the hill i’ve chosen to die on is that keri russell was robbed of emmys/globes for six years straight bc men are scared of female characters who aren’t nice or forgiveable

-The Haunting of Hill House (2018): i love horror movies/tv/books and am so often disappointed but damn did thohh blow me away. Such a good story on top of having some genuinely scary scenes and an emotional plot line. Also like every other wlw out there im in love with theo crain

-She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (2018-): Last minute end of the year addition! I was so pleasantly surprised by spop since its been a long time since i was actually impressed with an american animated show. but yall Noelle Stevenson truly blessed us and i’ve been obsessed with this show for the last few weeks. I cant wait to see more in 2019. 

-Broad City (2014-): yall im so in love with abbi jacobson and i really loved s4 of broad city. so fucking funny and i’m going to miss the hell out of this show when it ends in 2019

**Special mention to the sense8 series finale. I cried hard for the entire two hours and as much as i wish we could have more, i think sense8 ended with a perfect episode and it will always have a place in my heart

***i didn’t include it bc we’re in the middle of a content drought but i still love yuri on ice with my entire damn heart and rewatched s1 multiple times this year. 

Books: i read like 5 books this year its embarrassing

-The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy by Mackenzi Lee: such amazing historical fiction. Mackenzi does such a good job including queer/poc rep in a positive way while also making it feel historically accurate. this series is hilarious and smart and i loved it

-Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi: I saw Tomi speak on a panel at Yallfest last year before this book even came out and when she described this as ATLA but set in West Africa it immediately jumped to the top of my tbr for 2018. and yall it was so fucking good. amazing world building, great characters, and an exciting plot. im so hype for the sequel’s release in march

Music: this was a great year for music yall

-Eurus-The Oh Hellos: the Oh Hellos are my favorite band but Eurus is by far my favorite album of theirs. I love the sound, the lyrics continuously move me and have me feeling every emotion possible. (however Dear Wormwood was my most listened to song of the year, Grow was a close second)

-Go Easy Little Doves-Brooke Waggoner: ive been a fan of brooke’s work for a long time but this year i took the time to go back and really listen to this album and i fell in love with it

-Expectations-Hayley Kiyoko: its 20gayteen and lesbian jesus blessed us with this album. I love it and i love her. I saw hayley in concert in may and it was a great experience.

Kamui’s OTHER canon story where she figured out time travel and kept going back to choosing sides and doing different routes until the royals started to remember other time loops and everything just gets generally fucked over.

Kamui is Ryoma’s retainer AU.

Kamui stayed in Valla with Anankos AU.

They fuck during that one part of Conquest where everyone chills together in Izumo for the night and Ryoma ends up pregnant, so he has Shiro in secret and hides him away in the deep realms. Sakura is the only one who knows, and she tells Kamui that she has a son about half a year after Ryoma dies. Kamui takes Shiro back to Nohr and raises him there and it’s like Gilmore Girls but sadder. (I’m actually kind of working on this one rn.)

I have like 9 ideas for Kamui and Ryoma meeting when they were kids and being friends.
