I love you random.org, I love you oblique strategies, I love you websites like seventhsanctum and springhole, I love you procedural generation, I love you fractal art, I love you dice, I love you tarot, I love collaborating with the random chaos of the universe to create meaning!!
#creativity#oblique strategies#random generators#im bad at decisions! but im good at building algorithms and refining + editing the outputs#like. ive been using random.org to help me choose outfits since i was a teen! i have an algorithm for clothes based on season and weather#and ive been editing it as i need to#i have a doc thats basically an art randomizer. i make rolls for subject matter size and media. it's weighted based on my interests#and im never beholden to the results of the random rolls it just gets my brain started#(like if i *know* i want to push something specifically i wont roll for it. ive been focusing on digital art lately because i really want to#nail down my workflow for that)#coming clean! i used to use colormind.io to give me random limited color palettes for digital art#and i learned so much about what colors i like to use so over the past few months ive been developing my Own color palette#i have 10 colors now that i love and i make random rolls to narrow it down to 5 for any given piece#maybe you neurotypicals out there can just Make A Decision but thats not me#anyways. this post generated because the aipocalypse has brought up a ton of ableist rhetoric in the art community 🙃#and for a moment there i was bogged down by the imposter syndrome. but then i had a Think#and decided i would rather Celebrate the way my mind works instead of hiding in shame because i dont work the way people think it Should#this is all so tied up in the autism for me#anyways. i love you diffusion models#tag rant#if you actually read all that um. i want to give you a prize or somethin lol#yarrow speaks into the void

Creates an artwork that took ages but I'm really proud of it. Its a subject that a lot of my friends and followers like. Only a few people like it. Most of my friends have seen it and, nothing... I know I did a good job and it's pretty but this makes me feel like my art isn't good enough. It hurts more that my friends and mutals aren't liking it, more than the numbers.

Hey I noticed u were upset abt not getting attention on twitter? I have a few tips if you want them!
-use lots of hashtags
-make fanart (I recommend Pokémon or celebs?)
-caption your art with a joke or a quote
-interact with others and do art trades
-make art relevant to trending tags
-make art that’s appealing to non-artists: realism, bright colors, and “aesthetics” (cottagecore, goth, etc)
-make art that “feels good to interact with” like stuff with a political message (pollution and mental health are examples)
I understand your post was a vent, and that it’s important to make art you like instead of what’s marketable but alas. I am that guy. Your art is genuinely beautiful and I love the way u do blending and shading and I WANT TO SEE U SUCCEED <333333
so sorry if this hurts you or makes things worse. I’m not very socially apt unfortunately
The post was more of a tiny vent about how it feels like my posts often disappear into the void and the audience I have managed to gather doesn't get to see everything. Twitter is poopy that way (and for many other reasons). But yea, those things would certainly get my art more attention, but I kinda just don't want to draw things I'm not genuinely interested in, since I draw mostly for myself on my free time.
School and hopefully future work stuff is a different thing, those I handle with a different, more professional mentality because you can't always work only on things that you are super into (which is a big reason why on my free time just do my own thing).
Drawing stuff just because they are popular at the moment isn't my thing (it's very important to me to have a connection to what I'm doing or it will feel lifeless and boring to me), but this might be good advice for someone else who wishes to grow their audience!

Hi! Know I've been inactive for a bit and that probably isn't gonna change! I have other stuff to say but it'll be in the tags lol
#so im hesitant to say what i wanna say cause i dont wanna be perceived as ungrateful but like#i really wish my non fandom stuff got more attention/love#it sucks cause i know most of you followed me for Undertale/underswap art and junk so it only makes sense that#my more personal art wouldnt be treated in the same way#and im also aware thay regardless of how many followers i have not all of you will see/like/comment/reblog my stuff#and it bothers me that i care so much because i know the culture of social media doesnt cater towards the art community very well#even though art is so so popular#the creators of said art and content just dont get treated in the same way their creations do#and thats really disheartening cause ir feels like i have to constantly improve and one up myself in order to get people attention#like for so many this is their livelihood and to see it so dependant on algorithms is incredibly demoralizing#i dont know#this kinda feels like the only route for me right now since im still in highschool- this feels like the only way ill create connections atm#anyway im only saying this cause i wanna know if anyone else feels similarly? like i feel like such a jackass for thinking all this stuff#but i wanna know if its reasonable line of thinking yknow#thats why i havent been posting very much either. i just hate working so hard on something and feeling so proud and then it feels like#its being ignored? idk...#im aware this sounds whiny#i wont try to excuse it#if any of my art moots see this tell me if youve had similar experiences#since i feel bad ill try to post the sketches ive been doing since school started#my style has changed a bit so maybe some of you would be interested in seeing how ive improved? lolol#im done talking now. have a good one

ive been thinking about it and despite having my sonic OCs' designs ready and where i like them i maybe shouldn't post them as the first thing i have on the artblog
#i'm probably going to remove the link to the blog on here and let the tumblr algorithm do its thing 🙏 (barely anything)#this blog feels so personal...#by that i mean i dont want just anybody having an image of Who I Am in their mind#and it being. you know. whatever is on here#in my heart of hearts i know it shouldn't matter#but right now i dont feel that way so.#look away...#anyways back to the sonic oc part#as a first post i dont feel like it would fit the image#of what I Want for the artblog#which i cant put into words but i have something in mind for the impression i want it to give off#it may be futile to try because ultimately ppl can think a number of things#AND at the end of the day. if the pictures are on there and people can see it is the biggest priority#actually to clarify what i mean by The Impression for the Art Blog i mean like#the airconditioning in an art gallery. you know? the way it feels to enter a space with pictures on the wall#i like imagining it as a place to look at pictures#makes me happy :]#so while i dont think i'm going to be very precious with The Impression it may give off#i would at least like to try#also i need to update the about#i'll figure out later down the line what other pages it may need#tl:dr; my first post will be my nameless eel mermaid OC :D#AND one more thing.#a big part of being particular with The Impression *vine boom* of the art blog#is just plainly being conscious of how much of myself i share#which goes back to what i said about not linking this blog to the other and vice versa#yeah 👍

saw a take so fucking rancid on twitter i almost deleted the entire app from my phone jesus fucking christ
Tumblr media
first of all ao3 is an archive site. this is like going to the library and saying "oh i dont like this" on every piece of media you find that you dislike and thinking they should be stamped with some sort of a marker just cause you didnt like it
you can always click back and leave. fic writers owe you nothing to explain themselves and their creations. if they have mistagged or miscategorized fics, then i understand, however there are report tools for that instead of yelling at the artist tbh
im not saying free works arent necessarily above criticism. but this is just. fucking wild. its common courtesy to just enjoy stuff (or fucking leave if you dont, the back button is free) and if the artist specifically asks for critiques, then give one - constructive that is, shitting all over someones work is not proper criticism, mind you
i just find it fucking wild people are treating art and archive sites as social media these days like this and everything needs to be policed and ~catered to the algorithm~ like. no. ao3 doesnt have an algorithm. you should be able to fucking tell what you like and what you dont like and steer away from that kind of content and let people fucking be with their art. they dont owe you anything (except trigger warnings i'd argue, but i know some people disagree with that as well for some reason), and imagine how much more energy you'd have if you only engaged with things you liked and spent time looking at instead of going to places where you dont enjoy yourself. let alone spending time telling other people you dont enjoy what they enjoy. what a fucking life

tumblr in reddit terms
blogs: personal subreddits where the theme/topic is 99% of the time just “me and whatever the hell i feel like at the moment”. for reference, the most common other theme rn is “wizard roleplay that never breaks character”
reblogs: crossposts. these are crucial to maintaining tumblr’s ecosystem. due to blogs generally having fewer followers than subreddits have subscribers, this is the way that posts get seen and passed around. the vast majority of posts on a person’s blog tend to be reblogs, so if the people you follow dont reblog a whole lot, your dashboard is gonna be a ghost town. post limit (combined total of reblogs and original posts per day) is 250, so feel free to go hog wild
tags: this one is complicated. theyre a combination of flairs and Comments But Low-key. you can use them for organization and to avoid seeing content you dont want to (go to your blog, settings, account settings, content you see, and then add tags you want tumblr to warn you about before seeing it). if op tags the post #reddit (in the tags, not the body of the post), itll show up in the #reddit tag when anyone searches that tag. tags are also used for comments that dont really add anything to the post. you know how a jpeg gets kinda gross when its been through a million screenshots and has ifunny watermarks and shit? thats what adding “lmao same” as a comment does to a post. comments stay on reblogs, while tags show up in 4 places: op’s notifications, the notifs of whoever you reblogged it from, when someone clicks on the “notes” button of a post and actively looks for the tags left on it, and when people view your specific reblog of the post (like a follower would on their dashboard)
likes: upvotes but weaker. almost everyone turns off all the algorithms (settings, account settings, dashboard preferences, toggle off the first 3 options. also, make sure your dashboard is on "following" and not "for you". this is highly recommended), so leaving a like doesnt boost the post in any way. they still matter to some people. you can also use them to bookmark a post and go back to your likes later
enthusiastic and/or hyperbolic tags: reddit gold. you wanna let op know you like their art? leave something like ”#printing this out and stapling it to my forehead #op you wanna get married?” in the tags
pornbots: both reddit and tumblr have an issue with them. we block and report them on sight. they usually have hot women as their icons, no posts or reblogs, and a description like “22, brazil, nurse <3″. try to not look like that if you dont wanna get blocked by everyone you follow
blocking: you have this as well, but it seems like a bigger deal on reddit. the reason we are not twitter is because we block bitches who annoy us and move on with our day. do not feed the trolls
things we dont have:
karma: clout-chasing is The Most embarrassing thing you can possibly do on this site. we are all in this circus together and the clown who gets the most laughs is still a clown. popular users will literally deactivate sometimes because clout is a burden. no one here makes money

as an aspiring writer its crazy to hear you talk about it because i wish i could write 5k per day or 100k per week only on emails holy shit???? i know its bad and being a workaholic is bad but it sorta feels like one of those things you have to do if you want to be successful these days? i might be wrong im literally only 22 i dont know much but its how it feels yknow?
like my life plan, which i know is unhealthy, is "lets work ourselves to the bone and get successful and then use the money to recover from it" which is sooooo dumb to say out loud but it feels like the only way to get anywhere yk?
While there is a lot of pressure to constantly create more and to keep up a stream of creative output, the reality is that for many people, that rate of work is just not sustainable, and you'll burn out, and it won't be worth it. The money you earn isn't enough to recover from and keep living after. It's just not.
Most of the money I made from Hunger Pangs all goes to therapy and medical bills. If I'd worked at a more sane pace and not almost killed myself with it, I could have, idk... gone on vacation instead.
Like, I'm not doing myself any favors in terms of marketability and the sales algorithm by not having new work out every year, but also like... I just can't do it. I want to make art and live. Not die trying.

I would love to hear an extended rant about being an artist in a periphery country, if you're willing to say more.
sorry for this being late! but yes there are quite a few things to this.
1) EDUCATION/JOB OFFERINGS
when you are from a periphery country, the art education accessible to you is much worse than in the imperial core. yes, i know, you dont need to go to art school, you can be self-taught, you dont need a degree, but art school is about making potential job connections. in a country like croatia, you do not have access to those connections. you do not have ability to go out, show your portfolio, get reccommended by a professor for a listing. the education is stunted as well - the animation program here is atrocious, my building had an attic with dead pigeon corpses littering the room, there are no drawing tablets, computers are old, the building is leaking, but the lack of ability to make professional connections is the main concern.
also, your degree? people hear you got a degree from a balkans land and you are immediately less worthy in their eyes. your name, which is not anglo? crossed out, despite your skills. job offerings within your country? good luck, everyone lives in poverty, you are underpaid, and studios hiring can be named on fingers of one hand. you are left with earning online.
and you are left with earning illegally. making author contracts with pdv, taxes, etc is incredibly complicated when working over upwork, doing commissions etc. this does constitute as black market. we do not hand in our taxes like in the usa, theyre deducted from our salaries and contracts immediately. this means you are missing out on potential grants and statuses which require you to provide papers of your commissions. it also means that transfering money over paypal has to go into small amounts to your own account, to avoid suspicious activity.
2) ART TOOLS ACCESIBILITY
a thing that is very frustrating. living in a periphery country? good luck getting anything. art shops are scarce. art shops do not carry the same amounts of items, and they are more expensive than in their mother countries. you are left with office supply stores. the quality of accessible paints and other tools is lower. its already been proven that products shipped to eastern europe are of lower quality and higher price than in the west; and this goes for paints too.
this means that, if you do traditional art of any kind, you are left with shopping online. this includes shipping - youre in a periphery country? congrats, often it does not ship to it, or the shipping is atrocious. your choices? mostly deutschland amazon - every item has 10€ shipping minimum. prices are not adjusted to your salary, they are adjusted to the german ones, which are much higher. i have to regularly order fillings for my brushpen. it is not available in my country. the price on amazon is significantly higher than on pentel website, and their usa based shipping. yes, just the price of the product. pentel does not ship this to my country btw. aliexpress is what you have, it takes 2 months to arrive, is frequently lost in mail, and even with it being cheaper - its still a bit more expensive than the original.
3) ALGORITHM, SOCIAL MEDIA
this is the third thing - algorithm works against you if you are not from the imperial core. of course, there are timezones, but also - your posts tend to be shown to people who live around you; meaning you have harder time breaking into the international market, and that market is the only viable one.
4) BEING PAID LESS
being eastern european (or asian or southern american or african or...) gets you lower salary. i indeed love my employers, i adore the comic i work on so much that its become my own project as well, theyve been nothing but kind to me - but the fact remains that i, as an eastern european, am and will always be paid much less than my usamerican counterparts.
5) JOB OPPORTUNITIES, ONCE AGAIN, ENGLISH LANGUAGE
adding this but: its hard to break into cartoon network/adult swim/etc without being presently there. you cannot get to conventions, you cannot have your portfolio checked, and you must speak english. yes. anglos take english-speaking for granted, and fail to realize that actually speaking english for us is not a privilege, its a necessity, and its a tool of imperialism. it is unfair that you cannot do ANYTHING without speaking english. you cannot get jobs, you cannot advance your career, and while i personally speak english quite well, not everyone does, not everyone should have to.
anyway sorry for the length

listened to a podcast from tumblr ceo matt mullenweg abt his plans for tumblr and such and wrote down some quotes i found Interesting . (some are not word for word bc auditory processing + memory etc but i tried to stick to what he said as much as i could)
(on being ceo of a social network) "it is as hard as being the leader of a country"
"it needs to do a good job at showing you things you want to see- so both the people you follow but maybe also exposing you to new things you don't know about yet"
"people want their own home on the web, they want it to be something reflects them, not the needs of an advertiser"
"how do we make this amazing and really give the tumblr community what they deserve, and also give the world an alternative from these closed-proprietary advertisement-driven social networks?"
"you can have custom themes, you can customize it every little bit .. what we wanna do is making it be the best of both worlds, giving you the full customization that u currently have on tumblr, that u also have on wordpress, but still provide a streamlined interface, particularly on mobile ... you kind of move in and out of that full customization"
"that's ultimately what we're about, is giving power in the hands of users"
"what people really want isnt what they say they want ... its kind of like expressed preferences vs stated preferences ... thats probably why [other social medias] dont give u total control over ur algorithm"
"i want to have a path where you can start with, call it 'just' a tumblr ... but if you want to turn that into an e-commerce store, or customize it in a different way, or build a newsletter, or a mailing list, or create a membership site- these are all things that are supported by wordpress today"
"tumblr's userbase are primarily young .. more women than men which isnt common in technology .. its a very safe place and vibrant community for lgbt+, i think its over a quarter of the userbase.. kind of a place for art and artists"
"how do we make that a path to the wordpress open source community ... excited about ..bringing a younger demographic into wordpress"
"[the amount of new users from twitter/reddit are] less than you would think in the long term"
(to reddit/twt migrants) "give us feedback! what do you miss from the old thing when you move over?"
"i'd definitely like it to be as big as twitter or instagram"
"for tumblr for example i think [AI] could make our developers a lot more productive, their coding could be checked/tested by ai, .. that'll allow us to do a lot more .. maybe our pace of development could increase."
"ai can be a huge help in assisting on moderation, if it could help flag things before people even report them, that someone could look at and review."
"the algorithm [for the feed/dashboard] is a form of ai- its really machine learning, people use the terms interchangeably- if we could make the feed a lot better, we could tweak it and really learn the things u want to see and the people u want to follow"
"it could provide some really cool tools, when u think of the generative ai stuff, whether its dall-e or midjourney. so much of what people do on tumblr is expressing art and creativity, and theres some people who are resistant to this, but im actually hearing far more artists that are like 'wow! this is another tool in my toolbox!' its not just like using it instead of doing ur work, it's helping with the first draft, or helping u come up with new ideas, or maybe accelerating part of a workflow. so i see it like a new type of paintbrush, or new colors they can use. they see it as a new way to express their creativity. to me that's also the future. .. just like any other tool, like when we moved from typewriters to word processors."
(asked if generative AI worries him) "bad actors using ai to do more bad things .. that's definitely smth that's gonna happen, that's true with any new technology. if u rob a bank before, u used to have to get away on a horse, now you can get away on a car [laugh]. so like, think of it like that. we don't say "oh, banks are gonna be robbed so much more cuz now people can drive away faster". the good guys have cars too, so the police have cars .. it becomes something that is part of society .. there's more good people than bad people"

please do not comment horny stuff on my posts!! this includes in the tags!!! (i actually do read them)
please don't compare my art to other people's OCs! (DCA OCs or otherwise!)
i read every ask and comment i get even if i don't respond!!! i appreciate it :')
open the read more if you want use my art as a profile picture (or anything else) :]
using my art for private/personal use (profile pictures, lockscreens, wallpapers, just to look at) is perfectly fine to do without asking first! but if it's going to be somewhere public (like a profile picture) you'll need to add credit somewhere on your profile/somewhere easily visible (e.g. in your bio or in a pinned post!!)

reposting my art to other websites is not allowed without my explicit permission + visible credit on the post itself... but i'd really prefer if you didn't repost my art all.
feeding my art to AI algorithms is not allowed.
using my art for NFTs is not allowed.
TL;DR if it's just for personal use it's fine but if you're going to put it somewhere people will see it then you need to credit me + ask for persmission so that people can find my blog and i can know you're using it!!!
thank you for reading! :)

im thinking about making one, since all social media is going to shit! back in my teens, forums were all the rage, and i often miss the community there. those were simpler times - content wasnt ran by algorithms, but instead people and the community. multiple social medias are going to shit, and while tumblr is still here, i dont know what the future holds for it - especially as we've seen changes aiming for algorithm use.
so, would you guys be interested in joining? it'd be just a general forum, dedicated to artists and writers and just cool folks.
if you do like the idea, please reblog so i can get a bigger poll sample! c:

I'm noticing posting my art on Twitter (or X or whatever it's called now) is so hit or miss. Either people like it or hate it. Maybe it's algorithms or something. It's just hard for smaller artists to get noticed anywhere it seems ya. And my follower count is going down anyway. I dont know what's going on, fam.
So I think I'll post my art only on Tumblr from now on. Twitter feels so toxic anyway. Pinterest? Fawk no.😑

I watched a tiktok some days ago where OP was talking about their art variating in quality according to what they were drawing. Like for example when they were doing commissions quality plummeted and they'd ragequit because it was so frustrating even if they wanted to make it work but when they were drawing fanart for a series they loved it would be on a completely different professional level
And then they explained how they talked to a friend about it and the friend asked them
"Well are you passionate about art or are you passionate about the media you're drawing?"
Which sounds so simple and obvious but I literally needed it to be spelled out like that for it to click??
I feel like some kind of spell has been lifted a bit since then? I dont know
But all my life I was passionate about art itself and was only drawing TO DRAW but then with the internet and fandoms (that bring community and more engagement thats passionate in itself) but also art school and pressure to make a living out of it and to not get lost in the algorithm I was actually mad at myself why I couldn't draw fanart and capture that fanart vibe etc as others could but it was literally just not my main thing and wouldnt be sustainable longtime on its own
And I've literally burned myself out doing that and ever since I thought I'd use series and fanart like a crutch to get myself going again because I couldn't even imagine doing it on my own without any help but I've been actually doing myself a disservice with that?
I was trying to mend my problem with anime and movies and books and games but that's not what was broken to begin with
Its just such a different approach to everything to think "I'm getting my passion, love and joy for art back" and "I'm getting my passion for the media I love back through fandom and their passion I can piggyback off of" and how it makes things work from within and I feel stupid for thinking like that
Because at the end of the day it comes down to you and having to sit with yourself while drawing and how that's making you feel
And now it absolutely makes sense how so many people I knew were doing art but actually hated it and talked negatively about it and had no fun in art itself because they just wanted to contribute or show their love to a fandom but didnt enjoy doing it through drawing
And why we couldn't really connect because of these different approaches because while I was like DRAWING DRAWING DRAWING they were CHARACTER ABC CHARACTER ABC CHATACTER ABC
I dont know
It has been such an impactful thing I thought I might as well share it for anyone who needs it
The creator on tiktok is @ almostzander and they also concluded that it was an audhd hyperfixation problem and I'm still letting that simmer a bit in my head because I think that everyone experiences this on some level like just doing something for the wrong reasons to put it simple but I also think we are definitely more deceptive to that!
Tumblr media
(this is me letting it simmer)
