Debut: Donkey Kong (Game Boy)

New year, new crab! Well, not exactly a NEW crab, it’s been walking our real-life planet since it physically exited Game Boy screens in 1994, but it’s the first time it’s being covered here! Poor little Kānyī didn’t quite make it in time for Crab Week, but that doesn’t mean I don’t love it! Because I really do adore it!

Kānyī is another example of an eyes-in-a-void crab, which I still don’t think exists, and if it did, I would have posted a picture! Though certain voiders like Huckit Crab may be more based on hermit crabs, Kānyī is clearly meant to be a TRUE brachyuran. But if any of you know of any real examples of one of my favorite creatures boasting one of my favorite design aspects, let me know! If not, don’t worry at all. I’ve still got their eyestalks to enjoy!

Did you think that after that paragraph ended, I’d be done talking about this fake cartoon crab’s eyes? Well I’m NOT! I only started a new paragraph to make my thoughts on Kānyī’s eyes more easily digestible! As you can see, the sprite actually provides us with a whole different flavor of void eyes, this time with distinct pupils, like those of my darling Forkun. Which style is cuter? I can’t decide!

Okay, fine. I’ll tell you what Kānyī does in game already. It pinches. The pinches damage Mario. It’s very realistic. But there is something pretty novel about its behavior! Unlike most enemies, Kānyī isn’t defeated when thrown at another enemy, but its hard shell protects it! It is also able to resist any enemy thrown at it. This part’s not as realistic, though! Please don’t try throwing real crabs at other animals!

This Huckit Crab appears on Yoshi's Tropical Island. It wasn't in the original Mario Party, as the enemy was introduced long after that. There were originally flowers in it's place.

okay, in Dr. Mario World, the area you’re on is ‘inhabited’ by the viruses until you clear all of the stages in that area, when they are replaced by the people that actually live in that area. 

world 1 has toads, world 2 has spikes and pokeys, and world 3 has huckit crabs and goombas. alright, the huckit crabs are a weird choice among the classic enemies, but that world’s beach-themed so it’s fine. these are the creatures that live in General Mushroom Zones, deserts, and beaches that would want to avoid the mess of viruses. 

the thing is, world 4 is inhabited by boos and peepas. ghosts. already dead and often incorporeal. there’s no reason for them to be deterred by the viruses.... 

unless.

ghosts can get sick in the mario universe.
