How to Pray to God: A Hermetic Guide
To preface this: there is not an objectively wrong or right way to pray to God, only some minor guidelines presented in the Corpus Hermetica. Pray in the manner that you desire, that makes you feel the closest to God.
Now, onto what the Hermetica says about prayer to the Lord.
“You whom we address in silence, the unspeakable, the unsayable, accept pure speech offerings from a heart and soul that reach up to you.” [CH 1.31]
“You then, Tat, my child, pray first to the Lord, the Father, the only…ask him the grace to enable you to understand so great a god, to permit even one ray of his to illuminate your thinking…” [CH 5.2]
“Therefore, my child, one who gives thanks to God must pray to acquire a good mind.” [CH 5.22]
“...they begin praying to God and turning to the south (for when someone wants to entreat God at sunset, he should direct his gaze to that quarter, and likewise at sunrise toward the direction they call east…) [Asclepius 41]
“...should we suggest that your father tell them to add frankincense and spices as we pray to God? A bad omen, Asclepius, very bad. To burn incense and such stuff when you entreat God smacks of sacrilege. For he wants nothing who is himself all things in whom all things are. Rather let us worship him by giving thanks, for God finds mortal gratitude to be the best incense.” [Asclepius 41]
Well, then, now we have some guidelines.
Pray to God silently, aka, in your head as opposed to verbally out loud.
If you pray to multiple gods, pray to God first.
Before giving thanks, ask God for good mind.
When praying to God, face the sun! Now this could be intended for certain prayers or all, I do not know. Personally, I only do this when reciting the prayers given in the CH.
Do not give any offerings to God, it is unnecessary.
There we have it, the guidelines surrounding prayer seen in the Hermetica.
To address the following questions: What do I say? When should I pray?
You can pray whenever you would like to! However, sunrise or sunset for specific prayers.
As far as what to say - that depends on why you’re praying. There’s no pressure when praying to the Lord, for he knows of our struggles and intentions. If you need guidance or strength, simply ask for it. If you need someone to listen, pour out your heart. If you simply wish to worship, the Hermetica has your back with some lovely prayers:
The Prayer of Thanksgiving (Asclepius 41)
Initiatory Hymn of Silence (CH 8)
More hermetic prayers (among a plethora of other fantastic articles) can be found on the wonderful website of Sam Block under the “prayers” and “hermetic prayers” section, linked below. You can also write your own!

The Life of The Prophet Muhammad: The Battle of Khandaq and Afterwards
The Battle of Khandaq: Part 4
Islamic Army
Islamic army consisted of three thousand people. It was one third of the number of the enemy army. There were only thirty-six cavalrymen. There were two standards in the army: one belonging to the muhajirs and the other to Ansar.  Zayd b. Haritha carried the standard of the muhajirs and Sa’d b. Ubada the standard of Ansar.
The Messenger of God settled the headquarters on the foot of the Mount Sal. The back part of the army faced that mountain. The women and children that did not take part in the battle were placed in the castle and fortresses. The food and valuable goods were kept in those fortresses.
The Headquarters of the Enemy Army
The plain was filled with enemy tents immediately after the trench was dug.
The enemy settled its headquarters in the north of Madinah, where the Battle of Uhud took place. They were surprised when they saw the trench. They had not seen such a war plan and strategy before. Naturally, the trench demoralized them in the beginning.
In fact, they had set off with the imagination and hope of capturing Madinah fully. They did not even want to think of returning empty-handed.
The mujahids did not fear or hesitate when they saw the enemy army of ten thousand soldiers. The Quran described their state as follows:
“When the Believers saw the Confederate forces, they said: ‘This is what God and His Messenger had promised us, and God and his Messenger told us what was true.’ And it only added to their faith and their zeal in obedience.”
Sons of Qurayza Violates the Treaty
The Messenger of God was in the leather tent. Hazrat Abu Bakr was with him. The Muslims were watching the enemy and guarding. Meanwhile Hazrat Umar came to the presence of Hazrat Umar.
He said, “O Messenger of God’ According to what I have heard Sons of Qurayza Jews violated the treaty and decided to help the enemy.”
This unexpected news distressed the Prophet. In fact, he had made an agreement with Ka’b Ibn Asad, the leader of that tribe; therefore, he was sure that they would be loyal to the treaty.
The Prophet who was distressed uttered the following words:
“Hasbunallahu wa ni’mal-wakil [For us God sufficeth, and He is the best disposer of affairs].”
Sons of Qurayza were a big Jewish tribe and they lived in the strong fortresses outside the city of Madinah. They had signed a treaty with the Messenger of God. According to the treaty, they would defend Madinah together when there was an external danger for the city. Besides, they would not do any military moves without informing the Prophet about it. They would not help the Qurayshi polytheists and those who helped them.
Thereupon, the Prophet sent Zubayr b. Awwam to the land of Sons of Qurayza Jews in order to verify the news.  Zubayr saw that Sons of Qurayza were repairing their fortresses and conducting military drills. He returned to the Prophet. Thereupon, the Messenger of God said,
“Each Prophet has an apostle; and my apostle is Zubayr!”
What Hazrat Umar had said was true. Huyayy b. Ahtab, the leader of Sons of Nadr Jews had persuaded Ka’b b. Asad. Thereupon, Ka’b violated the treaty.
The Prophet Sends a Delegate
The Messenger of God sent Sa’d b. Muadh the leader of the Aws tribe and  Sa’d b. Ubada, the leader of the Khazraj tribe, Abdullah b. Rawaha and Hawwat b. Jubayr to investigate the situation again and to give Sons of Qurayza advice and the Prophet said to them,
“Go and investigate whether the news that has reached us is true or not. If it is true, tell me about it using implied words so that people will not understand it. I will understand it. Do not express it clearly lest people should feel scared and weak. If they have not violated the treaty, you can express it openly.”
Those distinguished Companions went to the land of Sons of Qurayza. They mentioned that it was a bad thing to violate the treaty and gave them some advice. However, they did not heed what the Companions said and declared openly that they had violated the treaty. They even acted so arrogantly as to talk against the Messenger of God.
The Muslim delegates were very disturbed about the situation. Sa’d b. Muadh, who had been an ally of Sons of Qurayza for a long time talked furiously and said, “I pray God not to kill me before I fight you!”
Then, the Muslim delegates returned and told the Prophet about the situation in an implied way. The Prophet said to them, “Keep the news as a secret! Tell it to only those who are aware of the situation. War consists of precautions and tricks!”
Madinah had been surrounded by enemies. God Almighty expressed the situation as follows: in the Quran:
“They came on you from above you and from below you, and behold the eyes became dim and the hearts gaped up to the throats, and ye imagined various (vain) thoughts about God.”
Sons of Qurayza’s Attempts to Attack Madinah
Meanwhile, Sons of Qurayza sent Huyayy b. Ahtab to the Qurayshis and asked for one hundred people from polytheists and one hundred people from Ghatafan in order to attack Madinah at night.
They would meet those forces and attack the women and children in the castle and fortresses of Madinah together.
This news caused a panic among Muslims. The Messenger of God sent Zayd b. Haritha with three hundred soldiers and Salama b. Aslam with two hundred soldiers to Madinah in order to protect the city at night. Those forces would patrol during the night.
Meanwhile Sons of Qurayza Jews made a few attempts of attacks but they could not succeed and had to return.

How I Pray
I do not know how to pray; not really. I mean I hear a lot it should be a conversation with God from your heart. I am really good at asking or demanding God’s help aloud when I am pushed to my limit (which, honestly, does not take much). It is then that I yell or say angrily, “God help me.” or “Please God help me” ... Does that count as prayer or as a complaint - am I basically the bad seed teenager rolling her eyes and complaining allll dayyyy long (no experience in that from my younger days - YEAH RIGHT lol).
I say the rosary while organizing my house - I tend to feel prideful that “at least I am saying my rosary”. Doesn’t that just negate the whole thing? And I only say the rosary with the mysteries once but twice with just the prayers... So not the best. And never while kneeling or thinking only about heaven or my intentions -- though at least I do try to keep my intentions list out there somewhere at least once said.
I try to pray at least a Hail Mary with my children in the morning. But now with carpools and craziness, not always.
And confession - oh my - when will I learn to make a full confession? How do you manage your prayer life? Any tips?

Breathprayer: "Let Hope have my heart, Holy Spirit" . At the end of 1 Corinthians 13, Paul says "faith, hope and love remain but the greatest is love. " But I don't hear hope as often as I do faith and love. I can't give up on hope! It has to be more supernatural than natural as there seems so little in our world. It drains me because I HAVE to hang on to hope! And I will but I sure could use some support from on high! . #breathprayer #pray #prayer #inspiration #hope #howtohavehope #stayinlovewithgod #faithforeveryday #howtopray #howtoprayforhope #ineedhope #holyspirit #holy #spiritofgod https://www.instagram.com/p/COst8gynbr8/?igshid=oiakvb4xml1w

Prayer - Getting Started
Tumblr media
In this series, I will be discussing the basics of Christian life and practice. Specifically, I will discuss what prayer is and present one of the best ways to learn how to pray. If you are new the Christian life, or you just want to develop a better habit of prayer, this session of Getting Started will guide you through one of the best ways to learn how to pray - a way that will help you better enjoy a full spiritual life with Christ.

This is series is brought to you by "Militant Thankfulness: An Essential Practice to Experiencing a Full Spiritual Life."
 What is prayer?
Prayer has been defined by the Oxford Dictionary as "a solemn request for help or expression of thanks addressed to God or an object of worship." According to Matthew 6:9-13, prayer is the art and discipline of connecting with God relationally. Prayer is a "means of grace" by which we can offer thanksgiving and praise, request help, and confess our needs to God (Richard Foster).
As can be seen from "the Lord's prayer" in Matthew 6, prayer is how we approach God. In brief, Prayer is the giving of praise and petition to the Lord (vs. 9, 11-13), and it is a way by which God gives us insight into His will and guidance for our participation in His kingdom enterprise (vs. 10; cf. Heb. 4:16). It is a two-way street.
Why is prayer important to the Christian life?
As you can tell, this is why prayer is so essential to the Christian life. This is one way we actively engage in a relationship with our Lord. Prayer is not only one of the ways we connect with God, but it is also one of the ways we position ourselves to receive from him. Everyone knows that a relationship (by definition) requires participation from both parties involved. It cannot be considered a relationship if the effort is only one-sided. This means if we leave all the effort in God's court, and we do nothing, we rob ourselves of the joy of a real relationship with God.
"Prayer is the link that connects us with God" (A. B. Simpson).
"To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing" (Martin Luther).
"Prayer is the nearest approach to God and the highest enjoyment of Him that we are capable of in this life" (William Law).
"Prayer is one of the ways we access that which God has already made available to us. It allows us to better experience the joy that our deceitfully wicked hearts attempt to hide from us" (Dusty Dahlin).

(Prayer: Does it make any Difference? - Recommended by Dusty)
 "Getting Started"
Now that we have seen the incredible importance of prayer, I want to suggest one way you can learn how to pray today. Not only will this help you learn how to pray, but it will also help you develop a better prayer life and habit of prayer. This technique is called "praying Scripture."
This practice is exactly what it sounds like. This is where you open the Bible, and you use the inspired prayers of Scripture to inspire your own prayers to God. The objective is to use God's word as the foundation for your prayer and to allow the Bible to inspire you to pray. I highly recommend you utilize the Psalms for this practice. Being that the Psalms are the divinely inspired prayers of godly people, it is a great place to start. It is quite simple. This is what I would recommend if you are just beginning your Christian walk or if you would like to better develop a more meaningful prayer life.
Let me give you an example. For this example, I will show you how to pray through Scripture with Psalm 139. (Although I am providing an example of how to do this with Psalm 139, you can engage this practice with any passage of the Bible).
1) Prayerfully begin reading the Psalm back to God.
"O Lord, you have searched me and known me!
You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
you discern my thoughts from afar.
You search out my path and my lying down
and are acquainted with all my ways" (ESV, Psalm 139:1-3).
Tumblr media
(ESV Study Bible - Recommended by Dusty)
2) When you get to a point that inspires you, you allow that inspiration to drive your own prayer time with the Lord. Perhaps, it will go something like this:
“Lord, you are SO glorious. It is incredible how NOTHING escapes your sight. I want to thank you for searching me and knowing me. I cannot be more grateful for this. This demonstrates to me how truly personal and close you are to me. Your Word says that you know every part of me. Every part of my life and actions are always before you. In the same way as you know me, please, Lord, help me to know you better.”
 3) Keep reading through whatever Psalm you have selected, and repeat this process as often as you are inspired.
"Even before a word is on my tongue,
behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.
You hem me in, behind and before,
and lay your hand upon me" (vs. 4-5).
Perhaps the above verses would inspire to pray as follows:
“Lord, not only do you know me, but you are always present with me. You are ALWAYS with me - a treasure and a privilege I do not deserve. A truth for which I am eternally grateful! Today, Jesus, please help me be more sensitive to your presence in my life. Help me to more fully recognize how it is you "hem me in, behind and before." I want nothing more than to sense your "hand upon me."
And that is it! Praying through Scripture like this is one of the most powerful and simple ways to learn how to pray, and to develop a better habit of prayer. WARNING! It is IMPORTANT to remember the objective is not systematizing prayer into some formula; the goal is to use the Bible to inspire your own heart-felt, and sincere, times of prayer with the Lord! Remember, I believe the Bible should not just be known - it should be experienced. It is one thing to know that God's word prescribes prayer as a spiritual discipline for the Christian life, but it is another put it into practice so you can actively engage God in relationship.
