You know, in the circumstance of reversed roles (shadowhunter Magnus and warlock Alec), there would have been a scene like this:
Ragnor (head of the institute): "Everyone who was on patrol yesterday please hand in your reports now." stops Magnus just as he is about to hand his over: "Magnus, before I take this, how high are the chances that this report is just another love declaration to Lightwood?" Magnus: "Extremely high." Ragnor: "Keep it."

End of the Year Fic Recs!!!
thank you @echo-bleu for tagging me! <3
I adore this as a game because I love reccing fics (and really should do it more often because So. Much. Good.Fic). This is going to be all shadowhunters I'm afraid though because I am still very much in the shadowhunters brainrot stage and haven't read much of anything else. (Also, sorry to those I haven't left a comment for yet, I WILL, spoons have just been low this year...) Also, I'll try to keep it to one rec per author because there are so many wonderful authors, but definitely go check the other fics of these people (if you haven't already) they're all excellent.
Recommend up to 5 series or multi-chapter fics from 2023 that everyone should read (multi-year WIPs count, if the last update was in 2023).
Running from the Night by @to-the-stars-writing. My forever fic spouse and the fic I reread themost this year goes to the fantastic, angsty Alec goes to live in a small village to get away from the Clave because the poor dude is traumatized fic from to-the-stars. This fic is my fics spouse (yes I got @to-the-stars-writing's permission to marry this fic) and I love, love, love it so much.
Flames to Embers by @notcrypticbutcoy: teenage!Alec is poofed into the timeline of his older self and it is lovely, sad, and heartwarming all at the same time. Also, teenage Alec is delightfully grumpy and Adult Alec is even more delightfully Done with teenage!Alec's grumpiness.
starshine and moonlight by she_who_reads (all_fandoms_reader) A three +1 fic where Alec isn't enough until he finally is. This fic is angsty and delves into Alec's (not all that great) self-worth issues and it hurts. Might or might not have cried reading it.
The Warlock's Cat by @dreaming-marchling. I hesitated a while which one I should pick from Marchling, but I ended up choosing this one (that said PLEASE go read Bleed for Me as well it is so goooood). The Warlock's Cat is a delightful "Alec gets turned into a cat and ends up in Magnus's care" fic. I adore it, and while it has its angsty or whumpy spots, it's mostly a nice, feel-good read.
Magnus Bane: Menace by AceOnIce To give some reprieve from all of the angst in this list, here is a fic of pure, unabashed fluff. Starring: Warlock Alec and Shadowhunter Magnus, the latter of which writes some truly ridiculous mission reports to HOTI Ragnor's grief.
Recommend up to 5 single chapter fics/one-shots (long or short) from 2023 that everyone should read.
The river cannot go back by @lawsofchaos1. Alec being Alec and completely in love with Magnus which leads to him committing treason like it's nothing. It is a short, brilliant fic that had me screeching like any @lawsofchaos1 fic does.
I'm finding it hard to breath by Honey_Hued_Hermes This one is pretty heave, but it does have a Hopeful Ending. Alec never promised he would tell Magnus if things ever got that bad...and sadly they do. Diving into Alec's Suicidal Thoughts and his Self-Harm tendencies.
A Most Fundamental Truth by autisticalec A missing scene from 2X10 when Alec tells Magnus that he's never been as terrified as when he feared Magnus had died from the Soul Sword. This one-shot dives into the "Alec was really very not okay emotionally" in this scene, so go read it!
The Difficult Task by @dani-dabbles: Another Alec is going through it emotionally fic (there are quite a lot of these on this list I just realized, oops). Thankfully, Magnus is there to offer support when Alec needs it because Magnus is still the best boyfriend. (also the repeated "not good enough"is evil and I am suing for emotion damages, please and thank you very much)
come to me (in the night hours) by @moonlight-breeze-44 Izzy is a supportive sister and is there emotionally for Alec right before his wedding to Lydia. This fic left me feeling all sad and weepy. This fic is technically part of a series, but as no other parts have been posted yet I am posting this in the one-shot part.
Recommend up to 5 fics NOT from 2023 that everyone should read (oldies but goodies).
I've Always Dreamed of Meeting Someone Like You by ColorfulWarlock A non-magical Alternate Universe this time around. Single-dad, fashion designer, and CEO Magnus needs someone to draw his designs for him after a hit-and-run leaves him unable to draw for himself. Insert Alec, the wonderful babysitter, and game designer who seems to understand what Magnus envisions and draw them into reality!
Angelus ex Machina by BlueA The series starts with the sudden disappearance of demon activity and the way that lack of activity impacts the local Shadow World. I love the way the parabatai bond is portrayed in this fic (especially in the third installment).
through the fire and pain by alxndrlightwoods is another parabatai-bond deep-dive that goes deep into how a parabatai bond can change shadowhunters. It also explains why, if parabatai are so powerful, there aren't that many of them. Love this fic!
i cannot touch because they are too near by @faejilly nobody manages to write poetry without writing poetry quite like @faejilly for me, seriously the words are always so beautiful I am in awe. This fic has to be my absolute favorite though because deep-dives into the parabatai bond are interesting to begin with but the way Jilly decides to do so in this fic makes it go from interesting to absolutely brilliant.
Greater Love Hath No Man by @lawsofchaos1 Okay, I lied, here is a second Laws fic, but considering this fic led to the demise of my laptop, I felt that it deserved to be on the list. (No, that wasn't a joke). Dad!Alec is forced to send baby!Max away to a warlock orphanage when his magic grows too strong for him and leaves him injured. The pain is real and it is excruciating, tissues are advised.
Recommend up to 5 of your own fics (completed or WIP) from 2023 that everyone should read.
As much as I adore reccing fics, doing self-recs is awkward, so I'm going to keep this to one rec before I combust into flames.
All Was Golden (everyone has probably read that one already because it's my most-read fic which makes this slightly less awkward than reccing any other of my fics.) Anyway, soulmate AU with a kind of ugly meet that has some angst.
Tagging, without any kind of pressure, the authors I tagged in the rec-list (if they haven't participated already) as well as @miss-mouse.

Promptlet: Malec Early Meeting
Izzy and Jace start clubbing early because Shadowhunters consider themselves adults around fourteen when they begin full mission status at the Institute. So, sixteen year old Alec just sighs and brings his Advanced Clave Law seminar work to Pandemonium and sits in the corner of the bar with a thick legal text and his battered spiral notebook for his rough draft essays. He doesn’t care if Jace and Izzy are taking field assignments, they’re still his little siblings and need a chaperone.
Magnus, obviously, starts hearing gossip from his bemused bartenders about the young nephilim downing club sodas with lime while frantically highlighting a battered copy of the Accords and decides he needs to figure out what's going on. Immediately.
So, Magnus ends up chatting with Alec (who, as it turns out, really likes the Shirley Temple Magnus snaps up for him in what was supposed to be a joke) and starts flipping through Alec's latest homework assignment. Magnus blinks, snaps up another Shirley Temple to keep Alec busy, and carefully reads the essay twice over, pulling out his own notebook (bound leather and fountain pen with a gold nib of course) halfway through. Alec found a loophole, a big loophole, that would exempt Downworlders from being questioned without notification to their faction leader.
Alec is an absolute disaster of a baby gay whenever Magnus so much as says hello or looks in his general direction, but, once he starts arguing the Law? He is vicious and ruthless and sharply concise. (Although Magnus becomes a little bit of a disaster himself when Alec absentmindedly starts chewing on his cherry stem while debating the finer points of interpreting The Clave vs. HOTI-Beijing, 1823.)
Ragnor comes over all the way from England just to see Magnus utterly lose his cool at this now seventeen year old shadowhunter who is literally drinking Shirley Temples and eating his weight in the extra cherries the bartenders slip him because they adore him too. Also, in terms of relationship dynamics? I think it would be kind of fun to explore Alec having a gigantic crush on Magnus (and Magnus just kind of utterly adoring Alec in turn between his obvious looks and, more importantly, his intelligence and his sharp humor and just .. everything) but also realizing that Alec is seventeen.
Alec is much more open (not that he had a snowball's chance in hell of hiding his Gigantic Crush on the High Warlock from anyone in Pandemonium except his siblings), and wages what amounts to pretty much open warfare to get Magnus to date him. He's insistent that Shadowhunters don't mature as slowly as mundanes (which.. fair) and makes bulleted lists and actions plans for every reason Magnus tries to say he deserves better/Magnus is too old/Alec is too young/etc.
And.. just how the Downworlders slide a stray Shirley Temple across the table for advice? Alec starts bringing little vouchers for a certain amount of advice time (or maybe little cupcakes or chocolate chip cookies that he makes for Jace and Izzy or something?) and slides them furtively across the table.
"Where might one take the High Warlock of Brooklyn out on a date?"
And then somehow two days later Magnus ends up in Central Park responding to a call from one of his warlocks and instead Alec is waiting there with a picnic lunch and a blanket and looking very, very smug.
This teenage Shadowhunter is outsmarting him. What even is this?
Also, Can you imagine the first time an old fling of Magnus' portals in to Pandemonium for the evening, expecting a night of fun, and the moment they ask where Magnus is at the bar, every Downworlder in hearing distance is glaring? Suddenly a good dozen wolves and vampires put aside their decades old fights and start running interference to keep this brazen interloper away from where Alec is holding court ranting about the Clave's shoddy grammar and lack of consistent position on Oxford commas (which, how dare) and how that can be used to interpret their latest ruling in three different ways, depending on what side you want to fight on.
(Magnus is sighing and staring dreamily from across the table.)
One day, Camille starts her usual nastiness and trying to get Magnus to come crawling back and Magnus feels .. nothing for her. The only thing Magnus feels is rage that Camille would try to interfere when he's clearly ... dating someone now.
And Magnus blinks wildly internally because holy shit he's dating Alec. WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN MAGNUS DOES NOT KNOW
I do think Magnus would hold off on anything physical until Alec was what Magnus considered of age, so think how fun it would be to explore how the two of them date when their primary love language can't include sex?
Think of all the cuddles and the literal sleeping together and the hand holding and the forehead kisses and, excuse me but did I mention the cuddles? I really want Magnus and Alec cuddling on Magnus' throne at Pandemonium after a hard patrol and Alec falling asleep and all the Downworlders just kind of cooing at their very favorite nephilim.
(I also imagine an impressively oblivious pair of siblings who don't realize their brother isn't just moping in a corner while they dance for literal years.)
When Alec is older maybe Jace and Izzy start trying to subtly tell him it's okay to be gay, he doesn't have to hide it - they'll still love him, and Alec is just .. like .... 'what are you talking about?' as he smugly claims his gorgeous boyfriend.

I love your writing! ❤️
I was wavering between this continuation and another, but could you do one for when Alec resigns and/or retires because of Imogen declaring Jace as the HOTI?
Ah thank you so much!
I appreciate 💜
Here is more! I hope you enjoy
-
Magnus redesigns his lair the instant Alexander is deeply asleep.
First, he changes all the wards to no longer allow nephilim blooded individuals the privelege of allowing them to find his home. Which means that he’ll have to ensure Alexander is kept safely inside the wards unless portaled out, or provided with a pass to the wards.
The latter which Magnus will have to be convinced to give him, since Magnus doesn’t trust the rest of the New York Institute or the Clave to actually leave Alexander be.
First, Magnus relocates to the heart of Brooklyn rather than on the outskirts closet to Manhattan. There is no longer a need to be easily reaches and found by Alexander, and so Magnus takes his lair back to a giant, empty but well maintained apartment building that has been waiting for him to return.
Magnus creates a foyer and a waiting hall and takes the first part of the floor below what will be his and Alexander’s home and the roof and turns it into a maze of rooms. Magnus will no longer let anyone into the inner sanctum of his home beyond Cat and Ragnor.
The waiting hall won’t be used often, but it will be used and that is enough for Magnus to create it. Many of his clients meet at Pandemonium but with the shadowworld in turmoil, it will be better for them to come to Magnus. The wards ensure that he can portal any client into the foyer and the wards will keep them there, ensuring there are no nasty surprises. Any nephilim who attempt to thwart Magnus’ previous goodwill will find a nasty surprise if they hitch a ride on a portal for someone else.
Magnus hums in pleasure as he adds a little drink cart and some obscure texts that he knows will interest at least half of his clietnelle and then he ensures that no one will be able to sense or know that Alexander resides with Magnus.
It’s a mutual benefit.
Magnus doesn’t need his clients concerned and wary because a nephilim is nearby and Magnus doesn’t need to be concerned about Alexander's safety if he can’t be accessed.
As much as this is for his clients, this is also for Magnus and Alexander.
Magnus wants his boy to be safe from the reminders of the war he’s leaving behind. Because it’s possibly the bravest thing someone has ever done, just because they loved Magnus that amount.
The wards Magnus levies are to protect the integrity of his position and the secrecy of their identities.
Because Magnus’ power comes from not just his magic but his identity, how he’s known to his people and how he’s trusted because of how he’s known.
However, it’s not the only reason that Magnus is finally separating his work life from his personal life.
His identity as the High Warlock of Brooklyn will no longer be so intrinsically tied
It is also to protect the sanctity of Magnus’ lair, the home he’s building with Alexander. The intimacy of a relationship that Magnus has longed for and finally found to be so much better than his darkest hopes.
So Magnus will not let either identity interact here, where they must be separate.
Let the world see Alexander with him at Pandemonium, when they are both prepared for the roles they must now play.
But here, Alexander will never have to play a role other than the ones he wishes to.
So Magnus will ensure that both worlds are kept separate, here in the heart of his domain.
“So, what are the plans for today?” Magnus asks, reaching over to kiss Alexander’s brow and sighing in contentment when Alexander’s sleepily nuzzles up against Magnus’ jaw.
“I’m a retired nephilim commander.” Alexander sleepily rasps and he sounds petulant and exhausted, “you said I could just stay in your bed all day long if I ever left the Institute. What happened to that?”
Magnus freezes and swallows, because he did say that and a small part of him had even meant it. He just has tried not to think about it, because Alexander has always been very clearly focused on his goal of leadership.
Which, has just conveniently imploded.
“Well,” Magnus murmurs, voice low and dark as he pets over Alexander’s shoulder. “I did say something like that, didn’t I darling? Is that what I should do then? Keep you here? In my home? In my bed? Make sure the clave can’t ever find you again? After all, it’s not as if they deserve to have you back.”
Alexander smiles up at him, delight on his face because he will always be surprised by such sincere praise. But Magnus just wonders at how Alexander doesn’t even seem to care that Magnus is sincerely making plans now to keep his boy close and pampered and out of the war.
Because if Alexander isn’t on the side of the clave — if Magnus can keep him out of politics and fighting beyond self-protection and defense of Magnus himself — then Magnus can keep Alexander without a single worry of being distracted from protecting his own people. Magnus no longer has to worry about what will happen if they end up on opposite sides of this war.
“M’kay.” Alexander tells him, “sounds nice.” And then, Magnus’ sweet, precious boy falls back asleep, like he hasn’t just given Magnus a gift of a lifetime.
Magnus watches his sleeping form and marvels at the trust he’s being shown, the adoration he’s being given and Magnus vows to never let it go.

Just me spitballing a Malec reverse au re-write kinda thing
Reverse AU, featuring my chaotic brain process whenever I try to figure stuff out.
Okay, Malec, because of course Malec.
And reversed roles, but also not just reversed roles, because they aren't carbon copies of each other, so I need to make things different, while not making them too different.
Also, if I want Malec as the two main characters, I might have to "extend" their significance? But then again, wouldn't that just make them Mary Sue-ish? And do I care about that?
Okay, so warlock Alec and shadowhunter Magnus. But not simply swapping places, because they are not simply the same person.
So how about we try, Magnus is not HOTI or acting HOTI. Alec might be high warlock, though.
Magnus is the son of the circle founder, but that's his mother. (Since canon didn't give any info on her I can use her as I want).
I still want Asmodeus to be Magnus' father, but I also want Magnus to not have magic, which he would if Asmodeus was a demon.
So how about at the time of Magnus being conceived, Asmodeus was still an arch angel, and sleeping with the shadowhunter was actually the thing that made him fall.
(though at first, no one knows about all that)
(or, well, no one knows about the Asmodeus thing, but that Magnus is the son of the traitor shadowhunter who made the circle is widely known.)
Magnus is openly bisexual, likes to rub his "life-style" into his superior's faces, and is known to favor downworlders (though is often mistrusted by them, because of who his mother is)
Alec is the son of a high ranking demon, don't know which one, though. (could actually even go all the way up to Satan, but that might be too op?)
Or go the other way around. His demonic parent wasn't all that powerful, but Alec has spent most of his immortal life training his magical ability to be more powerful, and so has achieved his own status. Kinda.
Gotta think about this.
So, yeah, unsure about Alec's specific origins.
Makeshift family with Izzy, Jace, Max, no blood relation whatsoever, though.
Max could be the newest member of the family. Jace a vampire, because my brain thinks it's funny if he can't see his reflection. Izzy a fellow warlock, who specializes in another field than Alec, who is more battle oriented with his magic, while Izzy is more interested in the variety of magic.
Clary could be a seelie, Jace could at one point drink Magnus' (extra angel) blood and become a day walker
Then Simon could be the new shadowhunter on the block, though it is questionable if there needs to be that whole complicated backstory with blocked sight and stolen memories… maybe a psychological reaction from onset trauma as a child, that then stabilized over the years, so that he was able to rejoin the shadow world…. Gotta think of this one,too
Magnus and Raphael would be best friends and shadowhunting partners, but not parabatai. (partly because I'm not a big fan of the parabatai bond in general, and partly because I get the vibe that Raphael and Magnus are the kinda people who strife to become good partners without runic assistence.)
The NY institute could actually be the place where the Clave sends its troublemakers, aka anyone who doesn't conform to their ways. (anyone not straight, etc)
Which could lead to the institute being pretty understaffed, (because why have lots of shadowhunters in an institute if you only ever make use of the same 4 people to take care of everything?)
Ragnor would make a good HOTI. I like the thought of Ragnor as HOTI. He would be in a perpetual state of being exasperated and fond of the shadowhunters under his command. (Magnus most of all)
I don't know where to put Luke.
So, meeting between Malec. ...
Maybe something more indirect that leads up to it?
Okay, so the family unit that is Alec, Izzy and Max (and Jace), move to New York.
(maybe the rumor mill goes something like shadowhunters in NY being more easy going with the downworld, or something. Or just that there are less shadowhunters in NY than in other places).
And since Max has had a particularly bad experience and is still so young, they decide that he would benefit from the new environment. And maybe Andrew is the high warlock in new york, but he wants a vacation, so he is all too happy to shove that responsibility into Alec's capable hands.
And then Magnus and his team need to close a rift, so they contact the high warlock, but Alec is with the vamp clan, to help Jace move in or something. So then Izzy goes in his stead.
But unbeknownst to anyone, Max follows them. Because he doesn't trust the shadowhunters not to hurt his "sister".
Closing the rift drains Izzy, and as she collapses, Raphael catches her. Max, who has been spying from a hidden place, can't help but see his sister in danger, and his magic reacts.
But he doesn't have great control, and his emotional turmoil makes like a fire spiral form around him. Izzy's magic is too depleted to try and control the fire, Max is panicking which makes the flames grow ever higher and higher.
So Magnus chucks his jacket and jumps through the fire spiral. There are some tense seconds, before the gathered people can hear the sounds of singing (?) (like a lullabye or something).
And then the firey spiral slows down and shrinks, until they can see (a slightly singed) Magnus rocking young Max and singing to him to calm him down.
Magnus and Raphael (plus Maia and Dot?) keep this little tidbit out of the report, no need to tell the higher ups that there is a warlock child who can't yet properly control his magic.
Alec learns of it all later from both Izzy and Max, and seeks out Magnus to thank him/get a read on him.
(I do like the image of Magnus jumping through fire to calm down a hysterical child, not gonna lie. And then Raphael hitting him over the head for not activating his fire resistence rune first.)
Also, whenever there is a clave envoy sent to visit the institute, Magnus makes sure to put on extra makeup and sparkly jewelry. And wear a t-shirt with a bisexual pun.
His fashion sense normally abhorrs those shirts, but if those stuck up homophobes make an appearance, he needs them to know that he "Likes his women like he likes his men"
And I have actually no real idea for actual plot..... so this is pretty much worthless. *insert rofl emoji here*

Reverse Malec
Reverse Malec
In my crackiest moments, I imagine a young adult Magnus - who hasn't lived through decades and centuries of experiences that have shaped him into the more or less grounded warlock we know and love - as some weird funky mix between Shawn Spencer (Psych) and Jake Peralta (Brooklyn 99).
Skilled, talented, smart, but also selectively childish, eccentric, reckless and a little bit crazy. And then I start thinking about reverse AU where Magnus is the shadowhunter and Alec is the centuries old warlock, and I try to imagine how Alec would deal with this Magnus. And not gonna lie, it sounds like a lot of fun.
Magnus being at his maximum chaotic, pissing off the Clave wherever he can. - Wearing graphic shirts that aren't usually his style, but if a clave official is due to arrive at the institute, you bet your ass that Magnus will don his most eye-searing shirt, preferably one with a queer pun. - Being very openly bisexual, all but rubbing it in his superiors' faces. What are they gonna do about it? Shame him? His mother is a genocidal maniac (assuming Magnus' mom would replace Valentine), there is no greater shame than that. Derune him? They can't. Even the Clave needs an actual reason to derune one of their best shadowhunters. Relocate him? They tried. Magnus has been to more than 10 institutes, and has driven all the hotis bonkers, until they begged the Clave to stuff him somewhere else. And now that he is in NY, where Ragnor is hoti, Ragnor ain't gonna let the Clave just shuffle Magnus around anymore. - Friendly rivalry with his partner and best friend Raphael. - Not so friendly rivalry with Lorenzo, who is also stationed at the ny institute. - Flirting with everything with a pulse - and without a pulse - until he meets Alec, the warlock who relocates his warlock siblings to NY because they heard about the institute there being not as horrible to downworlders. Then he flirts exclusively with Alec. Who is super overwhelmed, but kind of in a good way.
