So it came to my attention that there is a 'Making Of' for the first 4 episodes of Hornblower. @professorlehnsherr-almashy was the one who found this out, so he ordered the UK publishing. I found both the UK and the US versions. It only cost me about $15 to order both, so I did. 🤣 I felt it my duty to make there were no differences in the text, especially after discovering that some of the Hornblower episodes were released under different titles in the UK and the US.
There were no discrepancies, but regardless, I'll share some photos and bits from the book!
Tumblr media
The UK was hard back so I liked having a hard back copy!
Tumblr media
Both Pellew and Kitty got full page pictures which I loved! But I am sad that the rest did not.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Archie got one picture for the entire book and I'm sad about it 😭 but it's a lovely photo!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
THE BOYS!!😍 I do love that they talked to the boys, Sean has some comments on Styles and just having him speak about his time on this project made me so happy💖💖💖
Tumblr media
Part 2 for one more photo because tumblr limits the photos😑

Propaganda
No propaganda for Tetra yet
Hornblower's the most soggy wet pathetic man I've ever seen <3 He's got 56 mental illnesses and slowly goes from an albeit anxious but excited midshipman to a bitchy admiral

Because of reasons, I need to know the questions and (correct) answers for a Royal Navy lieutenant's exam from the Victorian era.
Ideally I would like to see the questions and correct answers for an exam from between 1845-1850 but at this point I'll take anything from the 19th century as a whole.
So far I've found...
• a late 18th/early 19th c. naval officer's papers that include sample questions, but not answers. • an item in the Greenwich Maritime Museum's collection called "Examination paper for rank of lieutenant, Royal Navy." and described as, "Likely the exam De Chair sat in order to quality as a lieutenant, the paper provides an example of the lieutenant's exam. The paper includes translations to and from French and practical navigation. It also includes sundry annotations of navigational calculations." However there is no photograph of the paper online, nor is it currently on display at the museum. I have emailed the curators for more information but am still waiting on a reply. • that one episode of Horatio Hornblower.
Any further information or nudge in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Character ask game!
For both William Bush and Horatio Hornblower
Same questions for both characters!
1. Why do you like or dislike the character?
12. What's a headcannon you have for this character?
23. Favorite picture of this character?
24. What other character from another fandom of yours that reminds you of them?
1. I like in both that they are quiet and unassuming, yet clearly take instances and make battle strategies when a situation gets dangerous for their crew. Horatio is more young, and can be impulsive and make bad judgements of character (particularly in idolizing Captain Foster), while Bush is older, more experienced, has commanding authority without sounding autoritarian, and is focused on getting most of the crew alive and getting the missions done without intending to call attention to himself as "THE HERO".
I don't like that Horatio goes for superficial enfatuation when pursuing romantic relationships with women, and both him and Bush live in a historical context where physical punishment is normalized in the Navy.
12. Bush is choosen to be the godfather of Horatio's first child with his wife Maria.
23.

24. The Muppet Treasure Island encarnations of Mr Arrow (William Bush/Sam the Eagle) and Captain Smollet (Horatio Hornblower/Kermit the Frog)

Once again staying up all night to try and fix sleep schedule; decisions have been made. Premier has been opened. Royalty free horror trailer music has been acquired. Literally no one asked for a horror trailer of Hornblower: The Even Chance made by a sleep deprived nutter with ~0 editing experience but it suuuure is coming. 100% guaranteed will be BAD. I could not resist. He just looks SO TRAUMATISED ALL THE TIME. And tbf a lot of traumatic stuff does happen actually. 10% epicness 90% TRAUMA, that's the Hornblower formula.

Watching Hornblower: The Even Chance with @ontologicalmoki and @januarydivide, who have never seen it
(the version online with baked-in Spanish subtitles)
Moki: I keep looking at the subtitles to see what's happening and being more confused
(later)
Moki: I'm learning some Spanish yeah
--
(Styles is introduced)
Moki: Harry styles...
--
(When Horatio fights back against Simpson)
Jan: Get 'im kid! Jan: Oh. Uh. Ow.
--
(When Horatio is in the rigging being punished)
Moki: Weird little hypothermic moth
--
Jan: Does Horatio even *want* to be in the Navy? This is unclear to me
(it's unclear to me too at this point)
--
Jan: I appreciate how skinny jacks ponytail is. Man has no volume to speak of
(among other deficiencies...)
--
(when Horatio challenges Simpson)
Jan: Little moth Horatio growing a spine good for him
Moki: Right now. Over go fish.
--
(Archie announces the declaration of war)
Jan: Why is he... happy about this?
--
Jan: I'm more than halfway convinced that casting directors look for large eyes in their lead actors because it's just genuinely easier to pick them out of a crowd
--
Jan: Have you tried putting it in rice
me: they're putting the entire ocean in rice
--
(as the Marie-Galante goes down)
Moki: Singing Barrett's Privateers in my head
--
(cutting out the French ship)
Moki: Stealth mission in the dumb hats Moki: And little boots
me: Wait till they wear the round hats, those are worse
--
Moki, remembering about Kennedy: So we don't know where poor what's his name is still
(little does she know!)
--
(Horatio takes the Papillon into battle without taking the French flag down)
Me: This, um. is a war crime
Moki: War crime baby Moki: Concussed war crime baby Moki: Wet rat war crime baby
--
(Captain Pellew shoots Simpson)
Moki: Square in the chest THRU Hornblower without damaging him
(seriously if you know how he managed that, please tell me)
--
Jan when I asked if I could post this: sure. I hope it blows up in the Horatio Hornblower fandom
(which it sounded like she didn't believe existed. Let's show her...!)

Matthews & Styles, first meeting (that's 2 words, but I'm sure you'll forgive me!)
Of course I'll forgive you darling!🥰💖
Oooo first meeting eh?
My headcannon is that Matthews came to Styles' aid when he was first pressed. I know nothing of what's required of a sailor when he's first pressed, but I've got the feeling that Styles was struggling with his knots, and Matthews comes up quietly and says "Lemme have a go at those, lad."
Styles looks up and sees Matthews. A man only ten years his senior, but he feels like a fatherly soul. Or at least, a close friend. If Styles could have one of those. He's never had any friends. So Styles takes a chance on his gut feelings, and let's Matthews show him how to tie his knots.
"Styles." The younger man says bluntly.
"Matthews." The older man replies, gesturing for a hand shake.
Styles shakes his hand with a solemn nod. Styles watches as Matthews ties the knot flawlessly but slow enough for Styles to catch on. Styles repeats the tie and it's flawless too. Matthews chuckles as he punches Styles gently on the arm exclaiming "Bright as paint ye are, lad!"
Styles lets himself smile at the praise, a far cry from the brutish expression he's tried to keep up since arriving on the Justinian.
Matthews sees the boy who wants a father's approval in that second. He smiles too and leaves Styles to it.
(That's what first popped into my head! 🥰 it's partially inspired by Disney's Treasure Planet, where Jim has his song and the montages shows him and Silver bonding💜 thank you so much for the prompt darling! 🥰)

Propaganda
i love knuckles. he used to be a selfish and notorious pirate until he crashed into a rock trying to track down a powerful gem and was abandoned by his crew. after that he became a coward, got a new crew, and spent all day throwing parties and doing absolutely nothing productive until getting involved in a multidimensional conflict to get all the pieces of something called the paradox prism, and now he's possibly going back to his old ways.
This is the man. From Midshipman to Commodore we follow Hornblower's career as he gives himself, heart and soul, to his ships, his crew, and to England.

Hi Tea, I’ve been researching Andy a lot lately and was wondering if you had any good sources for his pre-LOTR days (Strwriter/Voagerbabe). I’ve been struggling to find good links and sources for that era.
I love your blog and it has been an incredible source for me, thank you for the work you do.
Thanks, Anon!
Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of good sources out there for Andy's early fandom activity. As far as I know, all of his Sharpe and Horatio Hornblower messages were lost when Yahoo! killed Yahoo! Groups. His old Usenet posts are still floating around, though. If you Google alt.startrek.creative, alt.tv.due-south, or alt.tv.due-south.creative, you can then search the archives for Strwriter or Voyagerbabe. @notreallyhappeningtoday has also shared some highlights: 1998 | 1999 | 2000.
There's also this document, written by someone who knew Andy pretty well in the Star Trek: Voyager fandom. (Note that it refers to Andy by his birth name and with she/her pronouns.) The writer describes her interactions with Andy, his parents, and his sister; the introduction of Voyagerbabe/Ciyerra Tallaver to the Voyager fandom; Voyagerbabe's horrifying (and utterly false) backstory; and the death of an almost-certainly-fake boyfriend.
Here is an archive of Voyagerbabe's old Voyager and Due South website, which later became Victoria Bitter's Lord of the Rings website. Strwriter's website was never archived.
That's all I know of that's still available online. I hope it helps somewhat!

Anyone else like this?
I’m generally fine with smut. Love reading of all kinds, from many different fandoms. But for some reason, I am just unwilling to read any smut from ATLA.
And it’s not like it’s “oh, it’s from my childhood, so that’s why I don’t like smut from that fandom,” because I read Teen Titans smut, both those shows came out around the same time.
So anyone else have a fandom that they have different self imposed fic reading rules for?
--
Not about explicit fic, but sure. I like different things in different fandoms.
Or for a non-fandom version, while I like fandomy things 99% of the time with a heavy focus on character dynamics...
But for Age of Sail, I care most about fanboy tactics masturbation, so Horatio Hornblower passages with endless blathering about the wind direction are great, but fuck no, I am not going to read something that adds dragons. That ruins everything important about naval strategy of the day! How dare!

💜: Which character is way hotter than everyone else seems to think?
🤍: Which character is not as morally bad as everyone else seems to think?
💕: What is an unpopular ship that you like? Ship of the lines too :)
For Hornblower and Aubreyard
Most kind regards from @professorlehnsherr-almashy main ;)
First of all, I hope you can accept my humble apology for taking so long to answer this! Life got in the way as usual. 😣 I love getting asks of any kind so thank you for sending this! 🩵 ☺️
💜: Which character is way hotter than everyone else seems to think?
Hornblower: PELLEW! Most definitely! I think you knew I was going to say this 😉 I feel like he often gets overlooked by all the younger men in the show but he has my heart 💙 Robert Lindsay is a very charismatic and handsome man imo.
Aubreyad: My dear Stephen. He also gets overlooked, (I mean, next to Jack everyone would get overlooked 😅) He's aware of this a few times in the books, and it breaks my heart. I like Paul as Stephen even if he's "too tall", his features are kind, and his eyes are stunning.
🤍: Which character is not as morally bad as everyone else seems to think?
Hmm, this is quite a hard question for these fandoms, especially for Aubreyad:
Movie vise, I can't really name a person as bad, no one is bad, only misunderstood, and one can label some acts as "bad" but not the people doing them. I think I would need to dig in the books a bit further. 💙
Hornblower: The morally bad characters in the Hornblower series are indeed portrayed as "bad people". There are some that are "politically bad" ,and some that are "emotionally bad" and they have motives for being like that, so I can't really think of anyone that gets misunderstood by the fandom. Any ideas from you? Who is not as bad as they are portrayed?
💕: What is an unpopular ship that you like? Ship of the line too :)
I have to disappoint you here! 😭 I think that my ship for Aubreyad is the most popular, and it's Jack and Stephen 🩵 #otp
Ship of the line: Jack's first command! A fourteen-gun brig-rigged sloop, HMS Sophie!
My ship for the Hornblower is not as popular, but it's in the top three in the fandom- Edward and Horatio 💙
Ship of the line: Nothing can beat the Indy! HMS Indefatigable, a 44-gun razé.
