I just did the math and realized that Jonathan started helping raise Will when their dad left when Will was 5, making him 8. When he tells that story about helping him build Castle Byers in the rain all night “just like Will drew it” to cope with Lonnie leaving, they were 8. All the information was there, I guess I just never fully processed that

Jonathan has raised Will for longer than Lonnie did. Jonathan has raised Will for longer than Lonnie raised him even. When we meet them, it can be estimated that he’s been raising Will for 7 years. Lonnie still was said to visit/take them to baseball games etc. but that is visiting and he barely even showed up to that.

From season 2 on, Jonathan has been a parental figure to Will for longer than Lonnie was (at least two years of which Will wouldn’t even remember), not to mention the fact that Jonathan has essentially been a parent now for longer than Lonnie ever was.

Just thinking about how on top of the general parentification, their relationship being this dynamic has been the norm for the majority of both of their lives and that normalcy of it just adds so much weight.

And thinking about how much childhood Jonathan lost in being forced to grow up so fast as well as the fact that because he had to step in as a parent, in many ways, Will lost a brother. Just in the “other kid in the household” sense in the way that Mike and Nancy are siblings.

I mean, one could even argue that for a while until El, he was a sort of only child, and compare Jonathan in season 4 in relation to Will more to Susan (Max’s mom): a sweet and genuinely loving parent going through a lot and using poor coping mechanism and being a bit more emotionally distant than usual as a result - which is especially hard because of the current absence of the other parent.

Just...thinking about Jonathan and Will. And wondering about what pre-1976 Jonathan and Will were like. Who knows, maybe the same because of Jonathan’s protectiveness of Will from Lonnie. And thinking about Will and El. And thinking about Jonathan and Will and El. And thinking about the coming out scene now, oh my lord. And thinking about Hopper being home now and Jonathan maybe just getting to be Will’s protective big brother again because anything more was never a role to be handed to an eight-year-old.

I 100% believe the Byers family are shoplifters. Not like,, small business, but large chain companies they go crazy. El is already canonically a shoplifter. Hopper and Joyce stole a car. This is so real

She takes all his clothes and they're so dorky and oversized on her tiny frame that he just offers to go and drive her to get some similar clothes and she STILL takes his anyways. She is a type A closet stealer. Jonathan finds it cute that his sister wants to steal his things, so he doesn't really do more than huff about it. Maybe some light hearted teasing.

One day she comes in and this guy is absolutely blazed. Like. My guy is greened out. He's got a fan set up tryna blow all the smoke out of his window and it's. Not working like he wants it too. It's terrible. And El just asks him what that is and what's the funny smoke and smell and he's just PANICKIN

He makes her 'sibling swear' that she won't tell mom and Eleven is just happy to be involved in sibling stuff so she happily nods and agrees 😭😭😭 but she makes sure she gets his best shirt out of this deal

Hopper accidentally becomes the biggest ally in Hawkins out of hatred for Mike Wheeler. El wants to date Max? Perfect, Mike is terrified of Max. El wants to date Max and Lucas? Even better, more people to keep Mike away. Will comes out to Joyce and Hop? Hopper is immediately studying up on gay culture and flagging so he can find him a Hop ApprovedTM boyfriend. He sees that nice boy Gareth cuff his jeans one time and starts inviting him to family dinner. Mike seems annoyed that Steve is spending more time with Munson? A pamphlet titled “Accepting your Bisexuality” finds its way into Steve’s jacket pocket. Hopper has never seen Mike as furious as the day Steve and Munson arrive at dinner holding hands. It’s a good day. Hopper isn’t sure how Nancy dating the Buckley girl will annoy Mike, but he’s willing to give it a shot.

Having thoughts of The Party being touchy as all fuck after everything.

Like you cannot enter nor leave any kind of hang out without a hug, high-five, pat, or anything from everyone you were hanging out with.

And then, suddenly, you aren’t able to leave without a kiss or hug of some kind from Steve.

It started after the bullshit that was the Starcourt Mall. The kids were leaving Steve’s house from a DnD session maybe 2 months before the Byers left for Cali.

Dustin was taking forever to pull his shoes on and get out the house to his moms car and everyone was complaining. It was one of those rare times where Steve wasn’t the one carting them all around— they all had their own rides.

Dustin got his shoes on and Steve handed him his bag and— without thinking— pressed a kiss to the top of his hat before waving him out the door.

The rest of the kids are silent until Mike speaks up bitchily “what about us, asshole?”

Steve has no idea what they mean until El points to her head with a grin. Steve deals out head and forehead kisses for everyone and waves them off to their respective rides.

And then it just— sticks. At first it’s with just the kids whenever he sees them. He’ll usually greet them with a hug or an exasperated sigh and then say goodbye with a kiss to their foreheads.

Not even Mike complains. This is the kind of shit he never got while growing up— might as well make the best of it.

And then it migrates to Robin as well, and the Nancy is joining in on the hugs (they’re still too awkward for the kisses but the hugs are enough for now).

And Steve never holds back, not even in public. Again, no one complains.

And that’s how Hellfire finds out about the kissing arrangement (that might be the title of this if I make it an actual fic). They watch as Steve presses a forehead kiss to Mike, Lucas, and Dustin before waving them off and then presses a kiss to Max’s head and giving her a tight hug.

The guys try to make fun of the kids for it but none of them are embarrassed.

“It’s Steve, dude. He’s like a mom.”

“The kisses are actually really comforting.”

“It’s a Party thing.”

And then the fuckery of 1986 and Vecna happens and suddenly Eddie’s in on the hugs and pats and high-fives.

And then.

He’s in on the kisses.

Steve doles out the kisses like usual one night after Hellfire and gives one to everyone— including Eddie.

And Eddie panics and gives Steve one right back.

And then the kids are going feral about wanting to give Steve a kiss too.

And Eddie leaves during the chaos.

And then they don’t talk about it.

Until Steve and Eddie do it again.

And the kids accept is as the new normal; you have to give Steve a kiss back.

And then Steve and Eddie have an excuse to kiss each other on the foreheads and cheeks and noses.

One night they’re hanging out, just the two of them at the trailer after Wayne left for work.

Steve had greeted Eddie with a tight hug the moment he’d gotten in the trailer. Eddie had squeezed back just as tight if not tighter.

Steve was getting ready to leave, and on instinct leant in to kiss Eddie, but Eddie was also leaning in to kiss Steve. So they meet in the middle and accidentally kiss on the lips.

And then the new normal for Steve and Eddie is kissing on the lips goodbye.

Idk, just Steve being a very touchy feely person makes me so happy

How is housing gonna work? Cute fanfic trope of Will in Mike’s room is cute and all but they wouldn’t just let Jonathan sleep in Nancy’s every night and where would Joyce sleep?

The cabin has one bedroom, which is El’s, and Hopper slept on the couch. I guess maybe like El and Will could share and both Joyce and Hop could be on the living room chair/couch? But then where is Jonathan? Or maybe the cabin could stay the same and Will and Mike could stay together, Holly go with Nancy and Jonathan take her room?? But then where would Joyce go, Karen takes the main bedroom and Ted sleeps in the La-Z-Boy so on the couch by Ted? Jonathan and Nancy will be 20 after the 3 year jump so I guess they could have their own place (but idk about introducing a new set with everything else already going on??) Oh! And not to mention a) is Argyle staying (and where are his parents) and b) Dmitri Antonov??? Is he...here? They mentioned him moving to Indiana (and if so, where is his son? and if not, how is he not being hunted still?)

OH. BOOM SOLVED IT. Murray literally lives in a fucking BUNKER. And it is now the APOCOLYPSE. Can’t believe I didn’t think of it before, that’s perfect. Also only hilarity can ensue if Murray is harboring the Byers/maybe Hopper-Byers + Antonov and Argyle(who not only left Cali but also stole a pizza truck btw??). We know that Murray has a place to sleep upstairs, a pullout sofa in the study, another bedroom, and a couch in the living room. So he would still be sleeping there, leaving 3 other places (four if there was a second couch/chair I think?) for the remaining Jonathan, Will, and Joyce. Okay, figure it out, Argyle and Dmitry ig. Wait, but why would the Hopper-Byers not live together?

You know what! We have never seen the extent of Murray’s bunker! Executive decision, everybody move to Murray’s bunker because that is the funniest option and still allows for plenty of same room/same bed etc. or whatever kind of living together tropes you want.
