Sooo, lately, I have seen a few Hoof Trim Videos on TikTok, especially from Nate the hoof guy. And those got me thinking. We do have a few characters in Hazbin Hotel/Helluva Boss who have hooves. Mostly the imps but also Charlie and Alastor are seen with hooves.

Tumblr media
I know Alastor has shoes on, and it could just be drawn on his shoes, but there is also a canon merch mouse pat that shows Alastor with hooves.
Tumblr media
So I was wondering, do they need trims for their hooves? Are there professional hoof trimers in hell? I imagine it would be just like in reality that their hooves need regular trims just like nails, but it's hard to do yourself. Also just like in the videos I've watched, there could be issues like defects or something stuck in them, that has to be professionally treated.
Most videos I've seen are about cow hooves and I think most hooves in the show are goat-like hooves or for Alastor deer hooves, so I don't know if the procedures would be the same, but it's still fun to imagine the character going to a trimmer.
Since I'm a sucker for Alastor whump and I think he is someone who wouldn't admit he needs help, even if he is in obvious discomfort, I got a specific scenario stuck in my head. He wears shoes most of the time but his hooves still get defects from time to time. And sometimes he does walk around without his shoes, especially if no one is around to see him, or maybe just when around Rosie, because it actually is good to feel his feet on the bare ground in between.
Eventually, he actually gets a bad defect and something even gets stuck in there, but he ignores it at first. At some point, he starts to feel pressure in his hoof and it's harder to walk without some discomfort. Discomfort turns into pain and he starts to lame while walking. He is careful to not let anyone notice and even goes so far as to teleport everywhere even if it is just a few steps, just so he doesn't have to walk in front of others. But the rest of the hotel does figure out what's going on. When questioning him about it he just shrugs it off, but they, especially Charlie are not happy with that at all. During some activity, she somehow gets him to walk around and notices his lameness. She privately confronts him about it and assures him there is nothing to be ashamed of, after all, she has hooves too, and experiences issues like that herself as well. She offers to call her personal hoof trimer, Nate, but he refuses at first, saying he can take care of it himself. After some arguing, she convinces him to agree, if she promises to keep this a secret.
Imagine Alastors annoyance if the hoof trimmer tells him to lie on his stomach so the heel is on top because it's easier for him to work on the hoof. At first, he regrets agreeing to it, but as soon as he feels the pressure in his foot leaving he is instantly relieved. But then the trimmer puts a block on the other claw and puts a big wrap on, and Alastor is annoyed again because he realizes even if Charlie doesn't tell anyone this will be hard to hide. However the trimmer explains, that it won't be able to heal otherwise and he will come back to check on it in a few weeks. Alastor is not happy about that news, but goes along with it anyway, since he is at least not showing lameness anymore.
Now I'm also wondering what other kinds of ailments demons with animal forms could get, that are specific to the animal they are representing?

I was very pleased with the hoof trim I gave Amba on Sunday and she seemed pleased as well. When I first started, her hooves were underrun and the toes were too long because Alain barely touched them whenever he trimmed. I quickly got her toes back by cutting right up to the hoof wall. However, her heels were still low. This was partially because I was trimming them as well. Less than the toe, but still too much apparently. Now I only cut her toes back to the white line with the nippers, and the sides for just as much as is needed to get rid of any flair. The heels I don't touch with the nippers at all now. If they are a tad uneven, I will rasp them until they are, but that's it. Now she is starting to build heel up again and the hoof angles are getting closer and closer to being textbook correct. I don't think not trimming the heel would be right for most horses, but it works for her. I just had to figure this out through trial and error rather than advice.
The next thing I would really like to work on is doing a better mustang roll. I can certainly round out the edges of the hoof enough to prevent chipping for a long time, but I've never been able to get that David Landreville/ Pete Ramey level of smoothness.

I've been watching a lot of cow hoof trimming videos lately.
- Did you know that hooves are basically hiking shoes, right down to having a soft, springy sole, cushioned heel and stiff uppers to support the foot? The similarity is crazy. When we invented shoes we were basically just giving ourselves hooves.
- Sometimes cows hurt their feet and get blisters. But because they can't take their shoes off to relieve the pressure, those turn into abscesses that end up separating the hoof from the foot. Really sore. But a good hoof trimmer can shave off the old detached sole, right down the surface of the cow's little pink toe, and if they clean it up well, the cow will just grow a new sole in, like, a week or two. They can do this because they have two toes on each foot, so they build up the good toe and let it take the weight while the other one heals.
- The sole of the hoof grows really fast, but doesn't get too thick, because once it gets the right distance away from the bottom of the foot, the horn dries out and flakes off automatically. Self-replacing shoes with self-generating soles.
- Cows have more trouble with their feet if they're underweight rather than overweight, because they basically have insoles made of fat to protect their feet, and if they're underweight the insoles get thin and they get more blisters.
- Cows are amazing.

Brought one of my anatomy models to the barn to compare them to the real thing.
Obviously not 100% accurate, but still interesting to compare!

Got a new tool for hoof trimming!

Don't know how I ever managed without.
Twilight still has wonky hooves:

Here's after... slightly better:

Yes, I nicked her slightly. It's very hard trying to cut the long side closer to even without hitting blood. I feel really guilty, but she'll be much more comfortable with even hooves (though I think they are genetically uneven. Eclipse's are nothing like that).

My feeds on all these apps are so different.
Here I’ve got MCR brainrot
On TikTok it’s customer service skits, Minecraft parkour Reddit vids, and hoof trimming
Insta I’ve got cats and baked goods
And Pinterest its mini skirts and jewelry
There is no overlap.

look sometimes you just have to admit to yourself that the only thing that lets you sleep at night is watching hoof trimming videos like they're asmr. We are but humans who crave satisfaction in anything they can get and if it's hoof trimming videos... At least it's not drugs ✨

Why did I spend a full hour watching cow hoof-trimming videos on YouTube?
I’m certainly not interested in cattle’s hooves.
At least I didn’t think I was.
But I’m not alone, these have millions of views…
I bet you might be surprised by how interesting you find them too.

Howws that fic with your OC going? I’m very intrigued about that one :D
Oh!!! And if you have any new art/tidbits about her?
lmao, its going! I've made progress but now I am sulking like an 18th century poet in their giant, empty study.......Contemplating. Critiquing (just being nervous about posting fic since I havent written anything since I was like. 13. and I'm not exactly a writer, just someone who throws stuff together and goes Well, That's A Plot I Guess!) I'm glad people are intrigued about and Neves dfhjfghf. I DO have some lil doodles of her in the cult. One specific tidbit that makes me laugh: Neves is tall as hell in comparison to the cult members.
Tumblr media
I'm not sure how to measure the inhabitants of the Lands of the Old Faith, but I imagine them at least smaller than the average human--mostly because I think its sort of funny to emphasize just *how* out of place Neves is among the Lamb and their flock. This is more like a rough estimate of how they compare LMAO. With her height, the cult members usually ask her to help with picking fruit on big trees or, for example, doing things like standing on her shoulders to clean the Temple windows that are too high up otherwise :') Here's a silly comic w/one of her experiences in the cult too!
