Own this beautiful release from 88 Films of the “Human Lanterns” Two respected and wealthy Kung-Fu masters have a long rivalry, trying to one-up each other at any cost even if that means stooping into their personal life to gain the most public admiration.  With the annual lantern festive approaches, to have the best and brightest lantern would sustain at least a year of gloating over the…

I think I understand, to an extend, what you're going through. I had things I put too much faith in, that didn't worked out. Know that you aren't stupid for wanting this series to be comforting or putting faith in it or being hurt when it didn't. It's alright to be dissapointed and to have high expectations. You didn't do anything wrong or foolish! And, ah. Please, take care of yourself. I lost loved ones too, and I won't say no more - but please, find your old comfort book and read it again.
Aw, thank you, Anon. That is very sweet.
That is what I'm doing, when I'm not at my new very tiring job. I've fallen back into nostalgic comics for the most part. Hey, did you see Bleach recently returned from the dead? Yeah, that's some goooood nostalgia, inject it into my veins. Swords and Buddhist Mythology and Christian Mythology and cool art and more swords and mad scientists and masks, oh my, it's everything I ever loved as a teen. I look forward to jumping back in there...skillfully avoiding the unfortunate sexism as I go. Sigh. Nothing is perfect.
Tumblr media
I wish I didn't feel how I feel about the LOKI show. It hurts that it ended up hurting me when I most needed comfort. Perhaps my expectations were too high, but they have been met before, and at the end of the day I want to like things. I'm even more stressed now thanks to the job (yay 15 hour days and text messages from the boss with multiple ??? indicating upsetness at all hours) and legal proceedings with dad stuff and roommate disagreements and...everything else...so sometimes it hits me just how much I needed that LOKI show to be good and how much it let me down...
And then I start re-reading Into the Deepwoods again because Chris Riddell's illustrations really are sublime and I've always loved them since I was a wee tyke.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thank you for your concern. It does help, knowing I'm not alone in disappointment. It also helps that there are other things I can care about.
I am also watching lots of weird movies with friends. Trying out Hong Kong cinema, dabbling more in my personal fave Giallo (thank you Arrow Video service), seeking out weird Czech stop-motion films, and having movie nights with the oddest films we can find (On the Silver Globe is up next!)
And hey - Green Knight was an absolute triumph, and that, too, adapted the mythology I loved dearly as a child. There are still people out there doing this stuff right and it feels like a good, long hug.
Tumblr media
...but sometimes...I just wish LOKI had been the sanctuary I needed it to be. It was that show I looked forward to during the darkest moments of my year. And that's something I have to grieve and process along with all my other grief.
Maybe it can be that for me still. More practice at how to grieve.

BLOGTOBER 10/18/2019: ROBO VAMPIRE
“Incoherent” is a word that gets thrown around a lot in discussions about horror movies. This nasty little accusation is especially levied against movies that belong to subgenres that have more of a form-over-function bent, like willfully zany giallos, or perhaps outrageous Hong Kong exploitation movies. Usually I find that “incoherent” is an inaccurate and unfair description of the movie in question. To me, it’s ok for a narrative to have implausible causes and effects, or a few unanswered questions, or a couple of leaps of logic, especially when the movie in question plays in the realm of nightmares or fantasies. To wit: I watched Doris Wishman’s legendary A NIGHT TO DISMEMBER this month, and I couldn’t call it “coherent”, but I essentially understood what was supposed to be happening in it. To me, “incoherent” suggests a mindless, almost intoxicated rambling from one event to another, with no apparent connection or motivation. It has to mean that it simply does not make any sense, that the scenes could almost be in any order, or even in different movies altogether. It is extremely rare that I watch a movie, and just have absolutely no idea what the fuck is going on in it. That makes Godfrey Ho’s 1988 opportunistic Z-grade kung fu disasterpiece ROBO VAMPIRE a very rare film indeed.
Tumblr media
By now it’s clear that I usually sit on these movie for a minute, or a week,or longer, before I actually write about them. Sometimes that’s sort of a problem, and I have to watch something more than once when I definitely don’t want to. However, even if I had seen ROBO VAMPIRE a million times, or written about it in real time, I could never begin to tell you what happens in it, really. Roughly, a drug cartel in the Golden Triangle employs a taoist shaman to deploy his army of hopping ghosts against the interloping DEA. To fight back, DEA scientists or something scrape together the remains of one of their defeated agents to create a cyborg supercop. High jinks ensue. That’s all easy enough to say, but the reality is that I have no idea what happens during this actual movie. It’s hard for me to even describe what it’s like to watch it. For about the first 15 minutes I felt like I had a handle on things. It’s basically a regular supernatural kung fu movie with traditional Chinese vampires, black magic, and some sparse western action movie elements to justify the eventual appearance of an attention-grabbing ROBOCOP ripoff. But then...well, this thing happens where the shaman summons a “vampire beast” (there’s a lot of gorilla masks in this movie) to be the cartel’s champion, but a big titty ghost shows up and explains that the vampire beast is her deceased lover, with whom she shared a star-crossed affair that ended in suicide so that they could be together in the afterlife, so she’s pissed that now her ghost man has to be a vampire beast and have a job and everything instead of just retiring with her as planned. So the solution is that the shaman agrees to MARRY THE VAMPIRE BEAST AND THE GHOST, and then they’re satisfied enough to have a superfight against Robocop! But meanwhile in what seems like, and probably once was, a completely different movie, there’s a kidnapping of a DEA agent with Chinese water torture, and then separate of that there’s a bunch of guerrillas fighting some other guys in the woods who I wasn’t sure if they belonged to which/any of the previously introduced characters and...well, at the end, my viewing companion and I suddenly realized that we actually weren’t sure whether Robocop defeated the ghost and the vampire beast, or how any of this really shook out.
Tumblr media
Obviously I LOVE the marriage of the ghost and the vampire beast. I’m not trying to say that the arbitrarily titled ROBO VAMPIRE is as good as its deservedly famous VHS art, or that it’s really a laff a minit. Veteran trasheaters like me know that movies like this can be a slog, just to get to those one or two delicious morsels that form the reason you’ve even heard of whatever you’re watching. ROBO VAMPIRE can be challenging in that familiar way, but honestly, some of it made me laugh until I cried. You know Robo is going to be cheap, but I can’t describe how palpable it is, that he’s made out of spray painted pillows and potholders and Jiffy Pop thingies, and like what is his helmet, couldn’t they just get a helmet from somewhere? Some of the “special” effects make me feel like I’m going insane, especially when Robo tunnels under a fire moat on the beach to fight more hopping ghosts and/or gorillas...how could I ever verbalize what you must absolutely see to believe, and which I’m not even sure I’m right about.
Tumblr media
By this time, you know whether or not you are a person who needs to see ROBO VAMPIRE. No one but you can make this decision for yourself. For now, I struggle alone with the decision to watch ROBO VAMPIRE 2: DEVIL’S DYNAMITE. But, unlike anything in the movie ROBO VAMPIRE, I probably know exactly what conclusion I’m going to come to.

Al Grande Sergio Martino
(Roma, 19 luglio 1938)
regista e sceneggiatore italiano.
(IN 🇮🇹 & 🇬🇧)

In this late 70′s ad, former James Bond George Lazenby plays a secret agent impressed with the wonder of Sony’s great product line.
For those who haven’t seen 1969′s ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service,” here’s the trailer:
youtube
“George Robert Lazenby AC (/ˈleɪzənbi/; born 5 September 1939) is an Australian actor, martial artist and former model. He was the second actor to portray fictional British secret agent James Bond in the Eon Productions film series, playing the character in On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969). Lazenby's tenure as Bond was the shortest among the actors in the official film series and he is the series' only Bond actor not to appear outside of one film.
Beginning his professional career as a model, Lazenby had no prior film experience and had only acted in commercials when he was cast by producer Albert R. Broccoli to replace original Bond actor Sean Connery. At the age of 29, he was the youngest actor to have portrayed Bond and the only non-European actor to take on the role in the Eon film series. He declined subsequent Bond films and instead pursued a career in Britain, Italy, Hong Kong, Australia, and Hollywood, with his most notable works during this period including the anti-war satire Universal Soldier (1971), the giallo Who Saw Her Die? (1972), the martial arts films Stoner (1974), The Man from Hong Kong (1975), and A Queen's Ransom (1976), and the comedy anthology The Kentucky Fried Movie (1977). After his career stalled during this period, he moved into business and invested in real estate.
Lazenby later appeared in several films and television series, including roles which parody the James Bond character. In 2017, a Hulu docudrama film, Becoming Bond, featured Lazenby recounting his life story and portrayal as Bond.”

Mascherine anticovid, quei virologi italiani sbugiardati dalla scienza. E la guida errata dell’Iss sui tamponi
Tumblr media
Quanti morti ci saremmo risparmiati senza le indicazioni errate date dai virologi in tv e ripetute all’infinito dall’esecutivo? - GUARDA
Tumblr media
I TAMPONI CHE PROVOCANO DANNI AL CERVELLO Non basta. In September, Arrow Celebrates Mutants, Cenobites and the Apocalypse
With September fast approaching it means Spooky Season is right around the corner, and Spooky Season always calls for an all-out horror celebration. Arrow has you covered with a fun selection of new horror tiles hitting Blu-ray shelves in September that should help get those horror marathons all planned out. And to make sure all the bases are covered, a non-horror release has been added to the mix as well.
The frighteningly fun fall begins on September 17th with two releases. First up is Wes Craven's The Hills Have Eyes Part II. While not quite the success of the groundbreaking first film, this early '80s sequel is a down-and-dirty B-grade flick that genre fans have grown to appreciate more of the years. As far as films with dog flashbacks go, The Hills Have Eyes Part II may very well be the best. The second release hitting stands on September 17th is Alan Lado's classic giallo, Who Saw Her Die? George Lazenby and Anita Strindberg star as parents that search the streets of Venice hoping to find the black-veiled killer that murder their daughter. The film has received much praise for its style, which author Danny Shipka compared favorably to Nicolas Roeg's Don't Look Now. Who Saw Her Die? features a new 2K restoration from the original 35mm camera negative.
September 24th is a busy day as Arrow releases four new titles, beginning with a pair of Clive Barker classics. Roger Ebert famously declared 1987's Hellraiser to have a "bankruptcy of imagination," but that didn't stop horror hounds everywhere from cherishing this undisputed masterpiece. Doug Bradley dons the needles for the first time as Pinhead in this mad tale about puzzles, cenobites, and a sadomasochistic underworld. In the film's sequel, Hellbound: Hellraiser II, we are taken deep into the depths of hell as Barker's universe of depravity is further explored. Both films hit Blu-ray shelves with brand new 2K restorations approved by director of photography Robin Vidgeon.
Also coming on the 24th of September is In the Aftermath, a film unlike anything else you've ever seen. In looking to make his debut feature, director Carl Colpaert re-purposed footage from an older anime, shot some live-action footage and created a haunting post-apocalyptic look at Earth. This stunning film is now presented with the 2K restoration it deserves.
The month's final release, also hitting shelves on the 24th, is Billy Wilder's The Major and the Minor. Ginger Rogers disguises herself as a child to save money on a train ticket, a decidedly genius move that nearly comes crashing down when she decides to smoke. She hides out in the compartment of Ray Milland and hijinks ensue. The film is noticeable for being Wilder's first as a director in America and it essentially kick started his illustrious career.
